Neste trabalho, nanopartículas de ferrita mista cobre-prata foram estudas como uma opção viável de material bactericida reciclável. As nanopartículas Cu-Ag foram sintetizadas pelo método de combustão em solução e caracterizadas via difração de Raios-X. Ensaios in vitro foram estabelecidos como meio de avaliação do potencial de interação e da taxa média de inibição nas cepas S. Aureus e P. Aeruginosa, usando o método de difusão em meio ágar líquido. Análise por densidade óptica mostrou as comparações de quantidades relativas das cepas que foram eliminadas ou inibidas através dos mecanismos físicos das amostras. Resultados preliminares foram comparados com trabalhos semelhantes na literatura, indicando que a eficiência antibacteriana do material depende tanto do contato das partículas com a membrana celular das bactérias quanto do tamanho médio de cristalito das ferritas.

The little town of San Nicolás, Tamaulipas, Mexico, lies approximately 60 miles east of Linares, situated in the State of Nuevo Leon, and 150 miles SE. of Monterey, as shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1. The place is reached from Monterey by the Tampico train as far as Linares, a distance of 92 miles, and then by coach the rest of the way. It is situated in a narrow valley between low hills, the houses forming one main street and a plaza. It is peopled by about 500 inhabitants. The climate is temperate, the thermometer ranging from 90" in summer to a few degrees below freezing-point in winter; but this severe weather only lasts a day or two at a time, when the " northers " blow. There are no streams in the vicinity, but water sufficient for the use of the people is obtained from wells. The rainfall is about the same as that in the rest of NE. Mexico. The rainy months are July, August, and September. The rest of the year is practically dry, with an occasional showery day or two during the winter, when a " norther " is blowing. Timber is abundant in many localities. There are two varieties of oak, besides mesquite, ebony, "maguira," "patol," and a number of other kinds of trees indigenous to this region. I. History. On the discovery of the silver-lead bearing veins occurring in this district, the mining-camp of San Nicolás was founded in 1767 by the Spaniards, and numerous mines were opened and worked for a distance of about 3 miles east and 5 miles west of the town. This report describes work performed and results obtained for the technical and economic feasibility study of oil production by mining methods. The characteristics of oil fields which would make them amenable to mining techniques were identified. An inventory of known U.S. oil fields that offer this potential was collated. This was further divided into fields having potential for underground and surface mining systems development. Several candidate fields that fit particular underground and surface mining system types were then selected. Conceptual mining systems were designed for the selected fields. Five underground and four surface methods were chosen. Costs of oil production were estimated for these selections. The impact of oil mining an the environment was also considered.

Cobalt is recovered from square type of spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) containing 5~20 % Co, 5~7 % Li, 5~10 % Ni, 15% organic chemicals, and 7% plastics together with Cu, Al, Fe, and Mn. The waste LIB was prepared by physical treatment. After screening, the crushed LIBs were separated to +8 mesh, -8/+16 mesh, and -16 mesh powder. Among these, -16 mesh powder was selected for leaching. The leaching test was investigated at 2 M H2SO4, 6 vol.% H2O2, reaction temperature 60 ?, agitation speed 300 rpm, solid/liquid ratio 50 g/ 500 ml, reaction time 1 h. The leaching efficiency of cobalt was more than 99 % and its concentration was 24.9 g/L. For removing of impurities such as copper, iron, and aluminum in the leaching solution before cobalt solvent extraction, the impurities were eliminated by pH control with alkali solution. For selective extraction of cobalt, the aqueous phase removed impurities was equilibrated with different volumes of 0.4 M Cyanex 272 saponified of 50 %. Extraction efficiency of cobalt was about 80 % at first step. Separation coefficient (ßCo/Li) of cobalt and lithium extractions was 206.5. Over 9.0 % of pure cobalt sulfate solution was obtained after stripping with H2SO4 solution.

"3.1. IntroductionAmong the six platinum-group elements (POE), four have identical cubic symmetry, two identical hexagonal symmetry (Table 3.1). Despite crystallographic differences, there is a clear relationship expressed in the chemistries of the POE: they tend to be mutually soluble in one another and can frequently substitute for one another in compounds with other elements. This chapter consolidates the data on phase relations of the POE and the compounds they form with elements selected for their known or potentially important mineralogical significance- As, Bi, Cu, Fe, Hg, In, Ni, Pb, S, Sb, Se, Sn and Te-together with selected data for the occurrence of POE in certain elements such as Au and Ag, and compounds such as FeS. Resources used to compile the data are those available from the chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature. First each element is discussed, with composition limits of solid solutions drawn from binary phase diagrams. Single element data are followed by a discussion of the relevant binary systems and a tabulation of data for binary compounds found in those systems (Table 3.2). Tables and diagrams for the ternary and quaternary systems for which information is available follow, and finally the very limited information on the solubility of POE in mineralogically important elements and compounds is presented.The chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature on the unary and binary systems is extensive and widely scattered in many languages and publications; fortunately, most of the data needed to compile this chapter can be found in reliable compendia. The most useful and most recent of these works is by Moffatt (1979), because it provides a ready index to all material relating to binary systems listed in previous compendia; furthermore, the Moffatt compendium will reportably be kept up to date by annual supplements."

Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1992-93 year followed by a brief profile. All winners were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Beaver Creek, Colorado to receive recognition at the Institute Awards Luncheon Monday, June 28. 1993. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Alan Czarnowsky, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. A resident from each of the eight RMCMI member states is selected from among Board approved institutions. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the member state. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. O estudo da composição mássica de cerâmicas vermelhas é de extrema importância para a produção de peças com propriedades tecnológicas aceitáveis. Nesse contexto esse trabalho tem por objetivo determinar as propriedades tecnológicas de cerâmica vermelha para fabricação de blocos de vedação. Dois tipos de argila foram usados, argila forte e fraca, para a confecção dos corpos de prova que foram moldados por prensagem uniaxial. Após essa etapa foram determinadas a absorção de água e a resistência em flexão. Os resultados mostraram que a massa composta por 50% de argila forte e 50% de argila fraca apresentaram os melhores resultados de resistência à flexão. Assim, o estudo mostrou que todas as massas estudadas atendem aos requisitos mínimos exigidos por norma e que a massa composta pela mistura das argilas apresentou o melhor desempenho mecânico tecnológico.

"The study is focused on investigating the production of synthetic rutile of 95% purity or higher from a Norwegian ilmenite ore concentrate. This was to be achieved using a sequential process involving oxidative-reductive roasting at 975°C, followed by magnetic separation to further concentrate the sample and finally leaching with 20% HCl to remove mostly Fe-based impurities leaving behind synthetic rutile. The key process parameters considered were roasting time (1 and 2 hrs), leaching temperature (100, 125 and 145°C), pulp density (15 and 25wt%) and leaching time (3 and 6 hrs). The option of directly leaching the concentrate without pre-treatment was also evaluated. Test work was conducted using samples screened to a size fraction of 105-212 µm. Samples were leached in a 1 L glass autoclave. The reactor was hermetically sealed and thus the resulting pressure was not controlled but was dependent on the process temperature. The product from leaching was calcined and analysed via XRD and SEM to determine the purity of the product. The magnetic separation step was found to be ineffective and discontinued early in the study. Thus far a product with 97% synthetic rutile purity as analysed by SEM has been produced by directly leaching the concentrate at a temperature of 145°C, pulp density of 25wt% and leaching time of 6 hrs.INTRODUCTION The study investigates the use of a process route comprising oxidative-reductive roasting, followed by magnetic separation and then hydrochloric acid leaching and calcination to produce synthetic rutile from ilmenite concentrate. The grade of synthetic rutile produced should be suitable for chlorination to produce pigment grade TiO2. Hence the proposed process should produce a product consisting of no less than 95% synthetic rutile. Additionally, the product should have no more than 1.5wt% combined content of CaO and MgO (Zhang et al., 2011) as they tend to form high-boiling-point chloride leading to the malfunctioning of fluidized bed chlorinator (Cardarelli, 2008). Finally the product should have no more than 2.1wt% of Fe2O3."

This report provides an overview of the worldwide photographic industry and of the applications of photography. It also covers important technological and market trends, with special emphasis on those factors which may affect the consumption of silver in the future. The text is divided into the following eight sections: 1. Principal manufacturers of silver-based photographic products 2. Major product sectors 3. Structure of the international market for silver-based photographic products 4. Silver-bearing raw materials for the manufacture of photographic products 5. Basic function of silver in photography and alternate image capture and recording systems 8. Brief history of photography Silver- based photographic materials are made for many applications that require different photochemical and physical response characteristics and a wide variety of formats and sizes. All of these products are laminates consisting of a surface-treated support and bonded gelatin layers. Two basic types predominate - films and papers. Films have transparent or translucent plastic supports (mostly cellulose tri-acetate and polyester), while papers have mostly a paper core coated with polyethylene resin layers on both sides (RC type). The front layer contains white titanium dioxide to provide high reflectivity and the back layer a matting agent. However, a few so-called fiber base papers are still supplied. These have a high quality paper base coated with a baryta layer ; i.e. a gelatin layer containing white barium sulfate. The manufacture of photographic film and paper supports requires special procedures and equipment, because of the severe requirements for chemical purity, optical integrity and uniformity (see Table 1 on page 10 for a list of the principal makers of film and paper supports).

THE pumping of solids in water suspension is an important part of many metallurgical and mining operations. In most cases, it is still in the rule of thumb category for which no universal formula has been developed, and much research is needed. Because of the limited and incomplete data available, this article may be classed as an experience paper, which is presented with the hope that some contribution will be made toward the development of the so-called universal formula. This formula, if and when developed, may be evolved from several factors, many of which are not now available for general application. The designing engineer is interested in obtaining accurate forecasts on: 1—the minimum velocities needed to prevent choke-ups in the pipeline, which in turn dictates pipe sizes, 2—power required for pumping, 3—pump selection. The basic factors for a given problem will include: 1—weight per unit of time of solids to be handled, 2—specific gravity of solids, for calculation of volume, friction and power, 3—screen analysis of solids with the colloidal acting, i.e., the slime fraction, a very important factor, 4— shape of particle or some means of determining a friction constant, 5—effects of percentage of solids, 6—development of a viscosity factor to be used in the overall calculations, 7—calculation of the lower limits of pipeline velocities permissible, 8—calculation of total head, pump horsepower, and 9—setting up of pump specifications. In certain limited cases horsepower and total heads and minimum velocities may be computed and a suitable pump selected from basic data, but in many cases, as in mining of Florida pebble phosphate, experience rather than a hydraulic formula still should be used as a basis of selection. Pumping Florida Pebble Matrix Pumping at the Noralyn mine of International Minerals and Chemical Corp. will be used as an example. Other areas will vary as to the characteristics of the matrix, especially the slime content. A typical screen analysis of this matrix is: +14 mesh, pebble size,* 2.1 pct; —14 +35 mesh, 11.4 pct; -35 +I50 mesh, 60.5 pct; -150 mesh, 25.0; total, 100 pct; moisture in bank, 20.0 pct; weight per cu ft in bank, 120 lb. The —150 mesh fraction may increase to as much as 35 pct in adjacent areas. When thoroughly elutriated, the matrix has a relatively slow settling rate, which is an important factor in permitting lower pipeline velocities without choke-ups. Exact data is not available to evaluate settling rates. For a factor of 100 a suspension of clean building sand in water is suggested. When pumping long * Pebble is a commercial designation for the coarser fraction of finished phosphate from a washer, usually +14 mesh. distances, a quick settling matrix allows the coarser solids to settle out along the bottom of the pipeline, causing drag, turbulence, and increased friction. With a slow settling matrix as at Noralyn, turbulence acts to keep the solids in suspension at a lower friction head, regardless of the pumping distance. When the pebble content of the matrix, i.e., the + 14 mesh fraction, is in excess of 10 pct of the total solids, trouble may be expected from settling out even in normal pumping distances. To prevent choke-ups and maintain tonnage, an additional pump must be added in the long runs, where one pump would otherwise be satisfactory. A typical pulp handled is: total volume, 7800 gpm; water, 4500; solids pumped per hr, 4200 lb; sp gr pulp, 1.4; percent solids in pulp, 46.; pipe size, 16-in. ID; pulp velocity, 12.85 fps; probable critical velocity, 10 fps, as below this minimum velocity choke-ups would be numerous. In calculating friction heads the Armco handbook is used where a roughness factor based on 15-year-old pipe is set up. Because the pipe used in pumping matrix is smooth and polished because of the scouring action of the phosphate and its silica content, the head losses in the Armco table for water are practically the same as in pumping the Noralyn matrix through smooth pipe, plus the fact that conditions vary widely over short periods, making accurate determinations difficult to obtain. New pumps and pump changes are being tested continuously and a wealth of data built up. This has resulted in a substantial improvement and lower relative costs in pumping matrix. The Florida phosphate industry is constantly seeking to offset higher wage and material costs with improved technique. Until a few years ago a 12-in. discharge pump was commonly used, with heads as low as 80 ft. Sizes have gradually increased and heads more than doubled. For example, the following pump was placed under test at the Noralyn mine: make, Georgia Iron Works; size, suction 16 in., discharge 14 in.; impeller, 39-in. diam; motor, 600 hp, slip ring; full load speed, 514 rpm. The results were increased head, higher capacity than the older design, with fewer pumps in the line from mine to washer.

In calculating friction heads the Armco handbook is used where a roughness factor based on 15-year-old pipe is set up. Because the pipe used in pumping matrix is smooth and polished because of the scouring action of the phosphate and its silica content, the head losses in the Armco table for water are practically the same as in pumping the Noralyn matrix through smooth pipe, plus the fact that conditions vary widely over short periods, making accurate determinations difficult to obtain. New pumps and pump changes are being tested continuously and a wealth of data built up. This has resulted in a substantial improvement and lower relative costs in pumping matrix. The Florida phosphate industry is constantly seeking to offset higher wage and material costs with improved technique. Until a few years ago a 12-in. discharge pump was commonly used, with heads as low as 80 ft. Sizes have gradually increased and heads more than doubled. For example, the following pump was placed under test at the Noralyn mine: make, Georgia Iron Works; size, suction 16 in., discharge 14 in.; impeller, 39-in. diam; motor, 600 hp, slip ring; full load speed, 514 rpm. The results were increased head, higher capacity than the older design, with fewer pumps in the line from mine to washer.

THE pumping of solids in water suspension is an important part of many metallurgical and mining operations. In most cases, it is still in the rule of thumb category for which no universal formula has been developed, and much research is needed. Because of the limited and incomplete data available, this article may be classed as an experience paper, which is presented with the hope that some contribution will be made toward the development of the so-called universal formula. This formula, if and when developed, may be evolved from several factors, many of which are not now available for general application. The designing engineer is interested in obtaining accurate forecasts on: 1—the minimum velocities needed to prevent choke-ups in the pipeline, which in turn dictates pipe sizes, 2—power required for pumping, 3—pump selection. The basic factors for a given problem will include: 1—weight per unit of time of solids to be handled, 2—specific gravity of solids, for calculation of volume, friction and power, 3—screen analysis of solids with the colloidal acting, i.e., the slime fraction, a very important factor, 4— shape of particle or some means of determining a friction constant, 5—effects of percentage of solids, 6—development of a viscosity factor to be used in the overall calculations, 7—calculation of the lower limits of pipeline velocities permissible, 8—calculation of total head, pump horsepower, and 9—setting up of pump specifications. In certain limited cases horsepower and total heads and minimum velocities may be computed and a suitable pump selected from basic data, but in many cases, as in mining of Florida pebble phosphate, experience rather than a hydraulic formula still should be used as a basis of selection. Pumping Florida Pebble Matrix Pumping at the Noralyn mine of International Minerals and Chemical Corp. will be used as an example. Other areas will vary as to the characteristics of the matrix, especially the slime content. A typical screen analysis of this matrix is: +14 mesh, pebble size,* 2.1 pct; —14 +35 mesh, 11.4 pct; -35 +I50 mesh, 60.5 pct; -150 mesh, 25.0; total, 100 pct; moisture in bank, 20.0 pct; weight per cu ft in bank, 120 lb. The —150 mesh fraction may increase to as much as 35 pct in adjacent areas. When thoroughly elutriated, the matrix has a relatively slow settling rate, which is an important factor in permitting lower pipeline velocities without choke-ups. Exact data is not available to evaluate settling rates. For a factor of 100 a suspension of clean building sand in water is suggested. When pumping long distances, a quick settling matrix allows the coarser solids to settle out along the bottom of the pipeline, causing drag, turbulence, and increased friction. With a slow settling matrix as at Noralyn, turbulence acts to keep the solids in suspension at a lower friction head, regardless of the pumping distance. When the pebble content of the matrix, i.e., the + 14 mesh fraction, is in excess of 10 pct of the total solids, trouble may be expected from settling out even in normal pumping distances. Titanium of commercial purity (RC-70) and two all-a (hcp) alloys (4Al-1/4O2 and 5Al-2.5Sn) were tested in sheet form under conditions of combined-stress loading. Plane-strain compression and plane -strain tension together with uniaxial compression and tension provided information for constructing the tension-tension and compression-compression quadvants of the plane-stress yield locus. Coordinate values were obtained from yield-strength measurements; the slope at each point was based on a plastic-strain ratio. The materials represented a wide range of plastic anisotropy, which was reflected in correspondingly varied departures of the yield locus from that for iso-tropy. The tension-tension and compression-compression quadrants were not identical. If the uniaxial yield strength is insensitive to direction and the sign of the applied stress, the Mises or perhaps the Tresca criterion is adequate for predicting the onset of yielding under combined-stress loading. The prediction is not so straightforward in plastically anisotropic material. Depending upon details of texture, combined-stress yielding resistance may be substantially different from that indicated by the usual criteria.' However. a continuum theory of yielding under such conditions is available for reasonably direct application.2,3 Whether or not it can be used successfully must, of course, depend upon how closely the conditions of the theory are satisfied in the material in question. In its present form the theory contains no provision for Bauschinger-type effects, nor does it allow for the consequences that might grow out of deformation by more than one mechanism, e.g., by slip and twinning.4 With those limitations, more importance must be attached to experimental information about the yield surface for anisotropic materials. Studies of the yield surface have generally been confined to states of plane stress (tension-tension and tension-compression) established in thin-wall tubes by externally applied forces and internal pressure. That approach would be entirely suitable for anisotropic materials if they were available in tube form or in sufficient bulk to be machined into test specimens. 6-9 It would not serve for the textured and anisotropic sheets of much current engineering interest, unless sheet could be formed into high-pressure tubing without structural change. Since there would seem to be little chance of the latter, practical alternatives are needed. One such alternative is the subject of this paper. It involves the use of a few selected but relatively simple uniaxial loading tests on sheet specimens. The underlying idea is presented here with some details relating to application and a few results bearing on how well it has worked. THE BASIS OF TESTING Conventional Measurements. Yielding for a general case of anisotropy is described by the plane-stress locus in Fig. 1. Reference directions in the sheet specimen are related to the stress coordinates as shown with the insert: x is the rolling direction, y the transverse direction, and z the through-thickness direction. The four reference-direction yield strengths (t, tension; c, compression), Xt, Xc, Yt, and Yc, are all different. Nine paths that can be followed in uniaxial loading experiments are identified. Paths 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent conventional tension and compression testing to establish Xt, Yt,.Xc, and Yc. Useful information also comes from the ratio of the transverse plastic-strain components associated with yielding and flow in conventional tension or compression. The following is a case study of how LuckStone Corporation improved their blast monitoring and documentation program. A number of resources already at their disposal have been utilized to improve the body of data collected from each blast. The tools being used include GPS, aerial photos, and a user-friendly push button format excel spreadsheet. The data collected include product by product records of materials used, distances to all concerned neighbors, seismograph data, etc: The spreadsheet has been designed to perform an ongoing analysis of blasting trends. The program has been carried out at a corporate level and is in use by blasters at each location. This paper addresses the advantages and drawbacks of this program. It also addresses the ways in which the various tools were integrated, Discussed as well is the need for simplicity when bringing “new” technology to the field and the steps taken in familiarizing the end user to changes.

A dozen years or so ago, the general superintendent of our company, now the president, Mr. W. H. Clingerman, asked me to study the coal-washing problem. This work brought me into contact with the best washery men of the country. I investigated many kinds of coal-cleaning schemes, made numerous tests, and collected voluminous data, yet I confess frankly that I have had little practical washery experience and that little has been at the Middlefork washery of the United States Fuel Co. at Benton, Franklin Co., Ill., which was put in operation last fall. While this washery installation may not be the "last word," I am quite sure it embodies some long steps in advance of the older designs and constructions. From the washery man's standpoint, the removal of pyrites or marcasite, a disulfide of iron, is the one vital problem, and the one productive of the most beneficial results, so far as elimination of sulfur is concerned. Sulfates and so-called organic sulfur occupy quite a sec-. ondary position and are generally lost sight of in coal washing. The elimination of sulfur in coal in the past has usually been accomplished by jigging in water, but lately concentrating tables have been successfully employed. The flotation process has been applied to fine coal, but is hardly considered practicable. Coal washing is rapidly coming into its own, due to the depletion of low-sulfur coals for coking purposes, and we predict that soon the same careful attention will be given to the design and construction of coal washeries that is now being given to byproduct plants and other allied industries. Heretofore, coal washing has been considered only an incidental and necessary evil instead of the big problem it is—one worthy of the most careful study by men well trained along technical lines and capable of delving into the fundamental principles.
