"Low-rank coals have a pronounced tendency to disintegrate or ""slack” when alternately dried, and wetted by exposure to the weather. The more readily a coal slacks the greater is its tendency to ignite spontaneously and the more care must be used in its shipment and storage. Lignite slacks very readily when exposed to the weather. Slacking trouble is also experienced in shipping and storing subbituminous coal, but not to the same extent as with lignite. As a rule, bituminous coals are only slightly affected by weathering and in general may be classified as nonslacking coals. The slacking tendency of subbituminous coal is one of the characteristics that is used to distinguish it from bituminous coal. An accelerated laboratory method of test was developed to measure such slacking tendencies. This method was applied to a number of coals, principally from the State of Washington, and the method and the results obtained are given herein.Helpful information concerning slacking tendencies of coal was received from Marius R. Campbell, senior geologist U. S. Geological Survey.Coals that slack readily contain relatively large amounts of moisture. When exposed to the weather such coals lore moisture rapidly. As the coal loses moisture at the surface there is a gradual drift of moisture from the interior of the piece to the surface. If the loss of moisture at the surface proceeds at a faster rate than it is replaced by moisture from the interior of the coal piece, there undoubtedly in greater shrinkage of the coal at the surface as tom-pared to the interior of the piece and stressed are generated in the surface coal.These stresses in the surface coal cause it to crack and disintegrate.Likewise, when the air-dried coal is wetted by rain, the exposed surface of the coal pieces gain moisture more rapidly than the interior of the piece, causing greater expansion in the surface coal and the coal breaks down further. As this process of air drying and wetting is continued when the coal is exposed to the weather, the slacking proceeds and the exposed lumps of coal may disintegrate completely."

Some countries are infinitely poorer than others in mineral resources-despite the perfect equality of their political leaders ambitions. Compare the mineral poverty of Kenya and Tanganyika with the riches of Katanga Province and Northern Rhodesia. Compare Paraguay with Chile, There never has been any equality in the distribution of nature's wealth. Minerals cannot play any role at all in economic development where they don't exist, and there are bound to be differential rates of economic development where there are basic differences in the wealth of mineral resources available. Africa is my principal area of interest and I know that there is an unfortunate but widespread misconception about Africa's "vast mineral resources, "its "untapped mineral wealth." Why is it untapped? Why is it undeveloped?

F LUSHING the early slag from a stationary open Fhearth having a high percentage of hot metal in its charge is necessary in order to remove silica from the system. The flush slag is strongly oxidizing and is somewhat acidic. It has, however, considerable capacity to extract phosphorus from the bath and it also removes considerable manganese. It seems probable that factors which control the distribution of phosphorus and manganese between slag and metal in the refining period also should be dominant in the flush and postflush periods. Several studies, as summarized elsewhere,1,2 support the viewpoint that conditions closely approaching equilibrium for these elements are rather readily established during the refining period. Over the years these studies have repeatedly demonstrated that 1—high slag v01ume, 2—low bath and slag temperature, 3—basic slag, and 4—strongly oxidizing slag favor rapid elimination of phosphorus from the bath to the slag. They also show that the following conditions favor retention of manganese in the bath: 1—low slag volume, 2—high bath and slag temperature, 3— basic slag, and 4—minimum oxidizing power of slag. When it is considered that the flush slag often carries as high as 75 pct of the manganese charged and only 25 to 60 pct of the phosphorus charged, it is evident that in removing silica much manganese is sacrificed but phosphorus removal is far from conplete. Because of overriding circumstances, this is accepted in most operations and actually it is considered to be inevitable. This may account for the fact that little attention has been paid to conditions affecting the elimination of phosphorus and manganese in the flush slag. A recent study of the behavior of various charge oxides has developed considerable information on the flush and postflush periods. Because the data are felt to be of general interest, they have been brought together and Presented in this paper. The object is to show the various factors in the flush and postflush periods which influence elimination of phosphorus and manganese. Physical Conditions During and After Flushing Physical conditions existing during the flush vary from plant to plant, from shop to shop, from furnace to furnace, and even from heat to heat. They are strongly influenced by the physical and chemical character of the charge oxide which is ordinarily necessary to provide sufficient oxidizing power early in the heat. Invariably the period is characterized by a vigorous reaction between the principal re-actants: the hot metal being added and the charge oxide. During the flush, it is probable that the slag acts to some extent as an oxidizer; but, because of the critical influence of the behavior of the charge oxid'e on flushing action, it seems apparent that the oxide itself is the dominant oxidizer. Fig. 1 shows the course of two heats which were selected as being typical of the group studied. Heat A was charged with 55 pet hot metal, based on the total metallics charged, and heat B had 57 pct hot metal. As indicated in Table I and Fig. 1, the melt-down slag, which is not usually voluminous and which is principally FeO, expands greatly in volume and will show rather high levels of SiO2, MnO, and P2O5 very soon after the beginning of the hot metal addition. Simultaneously, large volumes of CO are liberated which cause violent mixing of slag and metal. It is of interest to note that the time required to bring carbon down to a low level is very much longer than that required for the removal of silicon, manganese, or phosphorus. At the end of flush, carbon in the bath is still approximately 2 pct. When strongly reducing hot metal is brought into contact with strongly oxidizing conditions within the furnace! it is probable that the rate of mass transfer to the slag (and atmosphere) of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and carbon initially depends principally on the rates at which the two participating phases are brought into contact That is, it depends on the nature of the various reactions. Later in the flush period, when the scrap is virtually all dissolved and the action of the bath has settled down to a steady and somewhat gentle boil, it is likely that other factors, such as the transfer of oxygen across the slag-metal interface, become dominant. The temperature of the slag-metal system is far from uniform. Heat is being driven by the flame down through the slag. Bubbling and surging of the metal also frequently brings portions of the bath in contact with the flame. At areas of contact between the ore and liquid metal, or slag and liquid metal, the oxidizing reactions generate much heat. On the other hand, scrap is being melted which tends to absorb large quantities of heat. Because the liquid bath is high in carbon, the steel scrap is brought into solution rapidly. This can proceed at a rather low temperature; and until much of the scrap has been taken into solution, the bath temperature would not be expected to increase appreciably. Consideration of these factors leads to the conclusion that during the flush period the slag should be rather hot and the bath relatively cold. Both observation and temperature measurements bear this out. Experimental Data The extended program of charge oxide evaluation permitted study of the widely varying conditions existing during the flushing period. Slag and metal analyses and bath temperatures reported herein (Tables I and 11) were obtained toward the latter portion of the work. Four different types of charge oxide, sinter, two types of hydraulic cement-bonded soft ores, and a pyrobonded agglomerate were used in the study. Although the heats reported were from only one 205 ton furnace, they show variations in flush slag analyses all the way from 25 pct FeO, which is typical with the use of a hard natural charge ore, to 45 pct FeO which resulted when a very poorly agglomerated fine ore was used. From the limited experimental data in the literature, preliminary values were derived for the thermal diffusivity of titanium alloys and for the quenching severity of various mediums used in heat treating them. The thermal diffusivity, under quenching conditions, was found to be approximately 0.006 sq in. per sec. The quenching severity H for brine is approximately 8, for water 4, for oil 0.9, for air 0.08, and for argon 0.02 in. -' The quenching severity of the Jominy-Boegehold end quench water jet against titanium alloys appeared effectively infinite. Using these results, graphs were prepared showing ideal round sizes and Jominy positions having cooled conditions equivalent to those at the center and surface of titanium alloy rounds, plates, and sheets quenched in various media. THE importance of proper quenching of steel parts has long been recognized, and much quantitative work has been done on the subject. Recently, it has become evident that for titanium alloys, too, the rate of cooling from high temperature is important in obtaining high strength and hardness. Maximum hardness and strength may not be attained in the as-quenched condition but rather after a subsequent tempering or aging treatment. Nevertheless, if cooling from temperatures near the ß transus is too slow, for the hardenability of the alloy used, a soft a-ß structure will be produced which will not harden on subsequent aging.'-" The quenching of parts of practical interest can usually be approximated by simple shapes, such as cylinders (rounds) and plates (or sheets) of various thickness and combinations of these. A standard that has been used extensively for comparison purposes is the center of an ideal round: a cylinder quenched in a medium that instantly cools its surface to room temperature." For steel, considerable practical use has been made of the Jominy-Boegehold end quench hardenability specimen,".' and its value for titanium alloys is becoming evident. It therefore appeared worthwhile to attempt comparison of cooling conditions in titanium alloy rounds and plates of various sizes quenched in various media with cooling conditions in ideal round and Jominy quenches. These comparisons are based upon measurements reported in the literature. Quenching Severity of Jominy Water Jet and of Brine As one starting point, there were available the data of Phillips and Tobin8 for positions on a Jominy specimen having the same hardness as the centers of round bars of various size quenched in 5 pct NaOH brine, shown in Table I. The Jominy speci- men is a round bar, normally 1 in. diam and 4 in. long, quenched by a water jet at one end and air cooled on the other surfaces.' After quenching, hardness is measured vs distance from the quenched end on longitudinal flats ground 0.015 to 0.10 in. deep. The data of Table I were based on a subsized specimen of 3/4 in. diam. Since the positions tested are close to the jet quenched end, cooling there may be taken as due solely to the jet, and air cooling can be neglected. These positions are then equivalent to various locations near one surface of an 8 in. plate jet quenched on both sides. Assuming that the thermal diffusivity is constant and that Newton's law of cooling holds, temperature vs time curves at corresponding positions in Jominy specimen and round bar then may be calculated for various assumed quenching severities of the water jet and of the brine. Cooling curves are generally taken to be metallurgically equivalent when they show the same time to reach a temperature halfway between the initial (heat treating) temperature and the final (quenching medium) temperature.5 On this basis, using Russell's tables,9 upplemented by heat flow tables derived in similar fashion by the author for positions near the surface of severely quenched plates, it was found that the experimentally observed equivalence, Table I, was best matched if the quenching severity H of the Jominy water jet was taken as infinite (H = co). This means that the jet quenched surface should be considered as instantly cooled to the temperature of the water

"This paper deals with the flotability of stibnite and summarizes the major experiences and technological innovations of some typical practices of antimony sulfide ores in China. Experiences of cyanide-free and -less flotation of complex antimony sulfide ores and the application of the heavy media process to the preconcentration are described.Performance improvements obtained by innovations in operating techniques are also outlined and discussed. Technical innovations involve: (1) ramification roughing and differential-rate cleaning of stibnite-arsanopyrite ore; (2) the application of the new flotation reagent system; (3) process of separation flotation of Sb-Hg bulk concentrate; (4) extraction of gold from Au-Sb bulk concentrate; (5) flotation recovery of coarse stibnite particles.IntroductionChina is rich in natural resources of antimony and is one of the major antimony producers in the world. During the past several decades, a lot of research works have been done and many experiences in milling practices were gained, some of which are summarized briefly as follows.I. Ore characteristics The antimony ore of Xikuangshan belongs to the epithermal- metasomatic-filled doposit of antimony sulfide. Major minerals are stibnite (92.1%), antimony oxides (7.9%) and a small amount of pyrite and pyrrhotite; the gangue minerals are quartz, silicic limestone, calcite, hydrous kaolin, sericite, barite and others. The specific gravity of the ore is 2.8 and the specific gravity of stibnite and gangue are 4.6 and 2.654, respectively."

The Bureau of Mines conducted research on substitute brazing filler alloys with properties similar to those of silver filler alloys in an effort to conserve silver and reduce hazards from cadmium emissions. Experimental work was conducted first on the commercial silver brazing alloys BAg-I, BAg-la, BAg-2, and BAg-3 to establish criteria for evalu-ating the substitute alloys. Properties investigated included the wettability of copper, brass, and steel substrates, and the strength of joints made with the filler alloys. A series of experimental alloys containing 50 to 60 pct Cu, 20 to 28 pct Mn, and 17 to 30 pct Zn was prepared and evaluated, together with Cu-Mn-Zn alloys with 5 pct Pb or 2 pct Ni. Wetting properties and joint strengths were not as good as those for silver filler alloys, and the high application temperatures reduced the copper and brass base metal strengths. However, experimental alloys containing 70 pct Cu, 15 to 20 pct Mn, and 10 to 16 pct Sn had wetting and strength properties approaching those of the silver filler alloys. The application temperatures for these alloys were high-er than those for silver fillers, but not as high as those for the Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. With the Cu-Mn-Sn alloy fillers, copper alloy joint members are less deteriorated by recrystallization than when applying Cu-Mn-Zn alloys. The Cu-Mn-Sn system has potential for further devel-opment as a substitute brazing alloy system, particularly if the melting temperature can be reduced by the addition of other elements without decreasing the ductility and wetting.

"The main features of the de Wet improved alkali fusion process for the manufacture of AZST are: Fewer process are steps necessary; radioactivity is removed by leaching rather than by precipitation; fewer waste streams are generated; there is less waste to discard and alkali reagent is recovered in the form of a sodium silicate solution that is essentially free of radioactivity.Here we report on our efforts maximize the alkali recovery in the sodium silicate product stream: Milled zircon, d50 ˜ 9 µm, was fused with caustic soda pearls in open reaction vessels at temperatures between 650°C and 850°C. Fusion times of 1, 2, 4, 24 and 336 hours (with intermittent milling) were investigated. The fusion products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and by wet chemical analysis.For prolonged fusion times the fusion products approached equilibrium compositions. However, the phases Na2ZrSiO5 and Na4Zr2Si3O12 observed at 850°C did not form at 650°C. Since these compounds do not hydrolyze in water they limit the recovery of alkali in the sodium silicate product stream. For 2-hour fusions a broad spectrum of non-equilibrium reaction-products, that are rich in sodium silicates, is formed."

NECESSITY FOR PRICE FIXING DURING the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, clue to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to 82 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and so much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. LANE-PEABODY AGREEMENT In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly-stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

To determine whether preheating coals before carbonization would improve the coking properties of the coals, particularly the weaker coking coals, 3 coals, 1 each from Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and a blend of the Illinois with a Pocahontas coal were preheated before testing for coking properties in the Bureau's BM-AGA pilot oven. The effects of preheating on the chemical and physical proper-ties of the coals and on the yields of carbonization products and strength of the coke produced from the preheated coals were determined, as were also the effects of bulk density, gaseous atmosphere, and residence time during preheating. Most benefit from preheating was found with weaker or oxidized coking coals, whereas the more strongly coking coals and blends showed little effect. Direct charging of preheated coal to the coke oven without cooling gave better coke, increased yield of tar, and decreased yield of gas. INTRODUCTION Although 94 percent of today's coal production comes from fields east of the Mississippi, the Eastern States have only about one-third of the Nation's recoverable reserves. West Virginia, which now produces more than any other State, has much smaller reserves than Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.5/ However, the manufacture of iron and steel in Western States, which has increased greatly since World War I, is handicapped by the scarcity of high-grade coking coals, such as are plentiful in the Appalachian region. Unless a practical method of improving the cokemaking property of local coals is developed, ferrous metallurgical industries in the West must continue to use inferior coking coals and to pay high shipping charges for better coals.

The initial results of a study of the environment-sensitive microhardness and diamond rotary drilling behavior of granite and its constituent minerals quartz and feldspar (microcline)1 have established that many similarities exist between the environment-sensitive mechanical (chemomechanical) behavior of these materials and that of the simpler solids such as periclase, soda-lime glass, and alumina4 studied previously, at least as far as n-alcohol (straight-chain alcohol) environments are concerned. The results of this study (hereafter designated study I) also suggested that the rate of drilling of granite in these environments is controlled by the chemomechanical behavior of its quartz constituent, and is greatest in those environments which impart a zero l-potential to this phase, thereby maximizing its hardness. Now, cationic surface-active species strongly influence the l-potentials of silicate minerals. For this reason they are widely used in mineral separation operations. In particular, dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) was found in study I to produce f 0 for quartz at a concentration in water of 107 to 10-4 moles per 1. Accordingly, the influence of dilute aqueous solutions of this surfactant on the drilling behavior of granite also was examined in study I. This revealed that granite could be drilled three to four times faster in 10-° molar aqueous DTAB than in water, and confirmed by experiment the suggestion that granite is most effectively drilled with a diamond core bit in environments which impart a zero l-potential to quartz. According to O'Connor and Buchanan' however, the isoelectric point for quartz in aqueous DTAB solutions occurs at a concentration of .•.•2 x 10-° moles per 1, rather than [101 to 10-1] moles per 1. To confirm the results of study I, therefore, a more comprehensive investigation of the [ ]-potentials of quartz, microcline, and Westerly granite in aqueous DTAB environments has now been undertaken. At the same time an examination has been made of one of the basic assumptions of the current conceptual understanding of chemomechanical effects. In this view, although hardness changes occur essentially instantaneously following wetting of the solid, they are confined to a surface layer at most a few micrometers (µm) deep. Hence, to maximize the influence of chemomechanical effects on bit penetration rate only shallow cuts should be taken. Practical penetration rates are then obtained by increasing bit rotation speed. Experimental l-potentials were determined by the streaming potential technique using an automated rapid-cycling apparatus recently developed by Martin Marietta Laboratory from a design by Somasundaran and Kulkarni. The drilling studies employed 3.2-mm-OD 120-grit diamond-loaded core bits with a wall thickness of ~0.7 mm, and bit rotation speeds of 2200 and 25,000 rpm. The load applied to the bit was independent of the depth drilled in both cases. The 2200 rpm measurements employed the same drill press and puddle drilling technique as used in study I. The higher rotation speed was obtained using a water-driven dental turbine drill. In the case, the surface active fluid was pumped down the axis of the bit to ensure efficient wetting and flushing of the drilling debris from the hole. In both cases drilling rate was measured by the parameter D(200), defined as the average rate of bit penetration during the interval from 150 to 250 sec after drilling commenced.

The Unit of Toxicological Risk Assessment of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) is conducting a 'Health Risk Assessment for Metallic Chromium and Trivalent Chromium' under the sponsorship of the International Chromium Development Association (ICDA) and the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF). This risk assessment will be conducted in accordance with the current European Union legislation in force (Council Regulation 793/93/EEC, Commission Regulation 1488/94/EEC, Dir. 67/548/EEC), but also to meet the regulatory obligations as set out in the European Commission REACH legislation proposal (Consultation Document, the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restrictions of CHemicals). Further aims include outlining the criteria for the setting of occupational exposure limits for metallic chromium and trivalent chromium compounds. Human Health Risk Assessment according to the current legislation shall entail hazard identification of the toxic end points (acute toxicity, irritation/corrosivity, sensitisation, repeated dose toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity) including, as appropriate, dose (concentration) - response assessment, and derivation of the N(L)OAELs (No (Lowest) Observed Adverse Effect Level) and/or DNELs (Derived No Effect Level). Exposure assessments for workers, consumers and humans exposed via the environment take into account all the known intended uses. Risk characterisation will compare the typical and/or reasonable worst case exposure estimates to the N(L)OAELs or DNELs to determine Margins of Safety (MOS) for all human populations by each exposure scenario and type of effect, followed by conclusions about the presence or absence of risk. Although all of the key elements of existing legislation remain in REACH, the principal change is that, the burden of proof will be transferred from the member state authorities to industry. The new proposed format of Chemical Safety Report (CSR) will include Risk Management Measures (RMM) as an essential part of the report in addition to the risk assessment. The RMM plays a role in the evaluation of further testing needs and advocating reasons for possible waiwer of requirements. The research programme started in March 2002 and will be completed within the time frame of two years.

This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

Laboratory column studies were conducted in order to assess the effectiveness of slag and red mud reactive barriers for cleaning up leachates generated at mining and waste disposal sites and loaded with copper and manganese. Solutions containing the metals of concern were prepared by dissolving the required quantities of CuSO4?5H2O and MnSO4?H2O in distilled water so that Cu concentration was 100 ppm and Mn 20 ppm. Flow rates of 25 mL.h-1 for Cu solution and 75 mL.h-1 for Mn solution were used in order to simulate aquifer water velocities of 1 ft/d and 3 ft/d respectively. Solutions were pumped upflow, in Plexiglas laboratory columns filled with each reactive medium, using peristaltic pumps. Measurements of middle and outflow column pH, redox potential, conductivity and elements concentration were performed to provide information regarding removal mechanisms for both elements and exhaustion/inactivation rates for each reactive medium. Both reactive media showed fairly good removal efficiency over the period studied. Copper was mainly removed by precipitation and formation of Cu(OH)2 while removal of manganese was due to precipitation of Mn(OH2).

The investigations reported herein comprise preliminary studies to evaluate large scale mining systems adaptable to the thicker oil shale deposits in the deeper central portion of the Piceance Creek Basin. The studies include an evaluation of the geology, hydrology and resources of the Basin., evaluation of a potential prototype mine site, synthesis of rock mechanics data on Green River Formation oil shale, selection and preliminary design and cost evaluation of six potential mining systems and a ranking analysis to aid in selecting the most promising system. Results of the ranking analysis indicate the following four systems to be most promising for large scale underground oil shale mining: - Chamber and pillar (using spent shale backfill) - Sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill - Sublevel stoping with full subsidence - Block caving with LHD's Recommendations for phase II are to investigate the above systems in greater detail, refine present cost data, and perform economic evaluations of oil shale mining using these systems.

Approximately six hundred air sample measurements were taken at several U.S. underground metal/nonmetal mines in 1998 and 1999. This air sampling effort was organized by the Nevada Mining Association to evaluate mining conditions and to evaluate the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Proposed Rule on Diesel Particulate Matter Exposure of Underground Metal and Non-metal Miners. MSHA’s proposed air sampling method, NIOSH Method 5040, was tested under controlled conditions and under normal mining conditions. Unfortunately, NvMA sampling results have indicated that carbonaceous rock dust, oil mists and even cigarette smoking create severe sampling interference problems for NIOSH 5040.The main conclusion was that NIOSH 5040 did not distinguish between DPM and other airborne carbon particulate. Thus, it is not a reliable method of accurately and unequivocally measuring DPM in underground metal/nonmetal mines.

In the Florida phosphate industry, fatty acid collectors are used to separate phosphate ore from silica during the rougher flotation stage. However, the presence of multivalent ions (in particular Ca++) in the processing water has been reported to result in the activation of silica with respect to oleate adsorption, rendering it floatable. Hence, adequate separation may not be achieved during the rougher flotation stage. In this study, the direct measurement of surface inter-action forces via atomic force microscopy was used to delineate possible mechanisms for calcium activation under phosphate flotation conditions at oleate/calcium concentrations both above and below the calcium dioleate precipitation limit.

Research is currently being conducted at the Colorado School of Mines in the use of high-pressure water for scaling down loose rocks in underground mine openings. In addition to improved miner safety, the adhesion strength of shotcrete applied to rock surfaces treated with high-pressure water is also increased significantly resulting in improved overall support capabilities of the shotcrete layer. Test results show an increase in adhesion strength by a factor of four on a concrete test wall cleaned with water at 21 Mpa (3000 psi) as compared to a surface cleaned at 0.7 Mpa (100 psi).

Vermiculite is currently mined from shallow (less than 25 m or 80 ft) surface deposits throughout the world. The largest producers are Palabora Mining of Phalabowra, South Africa (ore stock is a phlogopitemica), Xinjiang Yuli Xinlong Vermiculite of Korla, China, and W.R. Grace of Enoree, SC (ore stock is a biotite mica). Smaller operations are in Australia, Brazil, Russia and Zimbabwe. They also produce vermiculite on a continuous basis but do not export any significant amounts of product to North America. Intermittent and poorly documented production on a minor scale is reported from Argentina, Egypt, India and Uganda. Worldwide vermiculite production in 2004 increased1.7 percent to 432.8 kt (477,000 st). North American production declined, while African and Chinese production continued to increase.
