The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a computer program called the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE). The purpose of the program is to provide a starting point for estimating the air quantity needed to dilute diesel particulate matter (DPM) in an underground large opening mine, albeit taking into account various input assumptions. The AQE estimates the total air quantity needed to dilute DPM emissions that enter the main airstream of the mine to current statutory levels. It helps operators pinpoint vehicles that are high DPM contributors. In addition, it allows the user to make “what if” scenarios by varying the input parameters to achieve the most efficient and practical ventilation system. The AQE is a stand-alone software program that does not require any type of spreadsheet software. Engine data must be known or estimated with some accuracy and assumptions must be made in order to limit the variability of the program output. Program calculations and two case studies, for validation purposes, are included in this report. It should be noted that the program does not ensure adequate face ventilation and personal exposure compliance.

THIS paper describes part of a series of density measurements on low melting point metals being undertaken at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. This program has received support from the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. Examples of the type of work being done have already been given in earlier papers' , which deal with the densities of lead, tin, and some of their alloys. Densities were measured using a graphite pyc-nometer by a technique which has already been described." The cadmium and indium, supplied by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada were of 99.999 pct purity. Density determinations on indium, as for lead and tin,1,2 were made under a vacuum of about 5 x 10-6 torr because the oxidation and vaporization characteristics of the metal do not create experimental difficulties. This contrasts markedly with cadmium which, even at the relatively low temperatures of our experiments, has a high vapor pressure and a strong oxidation potential. To suppress the harmful effects of these properties, determinations on cadmium were made with success under an atmosphere of argon, the technique having been previously established in this laboratory for measurements on zinc.3 The densities of cadmium and indium are listed in Table I and plotted in Figs. 1 and 2. From the graphs, it is readily observed that the densities of both metals vary linearly with temperature. This relationship expressed mathematically is of the form:

The current status of the heavy and light rare-earth elements outside China is reviewed. New suppliers of the light rare-earth elements are Lynas (Australia/Malaysia) and Molycorp (USA), which are anticipated to process 11 000 and up to 10 000 t/y, respectively, and the most advanced heavy rare-earth elements project is Avalon's Nechalacho project at Thor Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada. U3O8 Corp has potential rare-earth elements production, e.g. ytrrium and neodymium, from its Berlin deposit in Colombia and Namibia Rare Earth's Lofdal project (Area 4) has potential to produce an average of 1 500 t/y of separated rare-earth oxides. With regard to the three historical producers, India has some small-scale production, Brazil has been a small-volume producer and has potential for new heavy rare-earth elements production, while South Africa has no current production

This paper analyses problems associated with cement based technique in metal mines, and provides a new mining technique of packing the tailing sand and water into solidified material. In the new technique, the cementing agent is a solidifying material containing a high percentage of water and tailing sand. The sand and water solidify into the packed body at the same time. The slurry of the packed body varies widely in concentration and suitability for different mining conditions. It consists of two liquid materials, each composed of a cementing agent, tailing sand and water. The thick liquids are transported to the packing place at the same time. Their pumping property is good; they do not solidify or block up the pipe during transportation. At the packing place, the two liquids are evenly mixed.The mixed liquid flattens out well and its solidifying speed is so fast that it solidifies into a packed body within a very short period of time. The compressed strength of the packed body can reach 1.2-5MPa in one day, which satisfies the requirements of different mining conditions. By using the new mining technique, all the tailing sand can be used again in the packed body and it is low in cost and investment. The mechanisation is easy and thus the working efficiency is increased and the use of labour decreased. Contamination problems caused by i. INTRODUCTION Deeper drilling for oil is becoming more and more the rule rather than the exception. With deeper drilling come additional problems, perhaps the greatest being those brought on by the higher temperatures encountered down the hole. particularly in the Gulf Coast region of Texas and Louisiana. Temperature gradients of the order of 1.8° to 2.0°F/100 ft are not unusual, and a gradient of 2.3"F.'100 ft is found in some areas of Texas. With a mean surface temperature of 74oF, the following temperatures could be expected for a geothermal gradient of 2.0°F; 100 ft: at 10,000 it. 271°F. 12,000 ft, 314°F: 14,000 ft, 354,oF; and 16.000 ft. 394°F. Severe gelation of lime-base drilling fluid in wells that have high bottom hole temperatures has become perhaps the most serious difficulty enconntered in drilling under such conditions. Lime-base drilling fluids have been very succesefully and widely used in the drilling of wells in the Gulf Coast region because of their inherent stability toward contaminants. their ability to suppress the swelling dispersion of bentonitic shales, and their ease of maintainance. The gradual recognition: during the past few years, that these muds were. in themselve. the cause of many difficulties experienced in drilling has led to wide-pread efforts by the drilling industry. to determine the reasons for the failure of these mud systems and to develop mud systems capable of performing satisfactorily under high-temperature conditios. MANIFESTATIONS OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE GELATION it is generally possible to recognize the symptons of high-temperature gelation early enough that advance predictions can be made of serious difficulties. in mud control, and the useful life of the drilling fluids can be extended by proper treatment. Following i.; a list of the manifestations of high-temperature gelation: (1) The drill string 'takes weight' while going in the hole after a trip. In early stages of high-temperature gelation it is possible to notice a slight reduction in drill string weight as the drill pipe is lowred near the bottom of the hole. (2) Excessive pump pressure is required to .tart the circulation of drilling fluid at or near the bottom of the hole when going hack to bottom after a trip. As the severity of the gelation increases it may be necessary to break circulation a number of times when going in the hole. (3) The drilling fluid from the bottom of the hole is thick and often granular or lumpy when pumped up after making a round trip. In a severely gelled drilling fluid system such a condition may be irreversible; that is, it cannot be stirred or chemically treated to produce a satisfactory drilling fluid. (4) Completion tool.. such as logging tools or perforating guns will not sink to the bottom of the hole. On some occasions completion tools will become stuck and require a fishing job to retrieve them if the wire line attached to them is broken. It is often difficult to determine whether the condition of the drilling fluid is responsible for sticking the tool or whether the wire line becomes key seated in a crooked hole and causes the allow difficulty. When there are 110 other symptoms of high-temperature gelation. then the difficulty may usually be attributed to the latter cause. (5) In extreme cases of high-temperature gelation it is necessary to "wash" and "ream" when going back to bottom after coming out of the hole. (6) In many -instance. it has been found to be extremely difficult and expensive to 1111 production packers 2nd tubing in moderately deep oil wells which had been drilled with a lime-base drilling fluid. In such instances-the original mud had apparently "set" to a consistency approaching that of a weak cement. CAUSES OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE GELATION Extensive test; have indicated that a lime-base mud does not develop a highly gelled condition at temperatures below 250°F. whereas above that temperature such condition often develops rapidly. (Fig. 1) concurrently. the following changes are evident ill the mud: (1) The alkalinity of the mud decreases to a very low value. with both caustic soda and lime being consumed. (2) The quartz content of the mud decreases sharply. (3) The bentonitic content of the mud decreases or di-appears, with concurrent decrease or loss of base exchange capacity of mud solids. (4) New compounds formed in the mud have been found to be cal-cium silicate, calcium aluminum silicate, and calcium sodium aluminum silicate. (5) The mud loses the ability to form a filter cake of low permeability. The above characteristics have been discussed, in part. by other authors

J: H. POLHEMUS, New York, N. Y. (written discussion*).-The Joplin .mining and milling practice has largely influenced operating methods in the Wisconsin district. Milling equipment is essentially of the same type with the notable exception that no tables are used. The treatment of the flue 'sands has been attempted several times but without commercial success. Table material coming from any one mill is low both in tonnage and zinc content. The iron is comparatively high as the pyrite-line "chat" is much more prevalent than the zinc-lime attached particle. In the finer sizes the zinc occurs mainly as free mineral. These condi-tions make the production of good-grade table concentrates very diffi-cult. The accompanying tabulated results from several mill tests indi-cate the character of the mill tails. I think the average mill tails in the district assay nearer 1.5 per cent. zinc than under 1 per cent., as stated by Messrs. Boericke and Garnett.

In ternary systems containing silicon and transition elements, silicon was found to stabilize the a phase.1 At 1000°C a broad a-phase region was found in the Cr-Mn-Si system,1 which extends very close to the Mn-Si binary line (within about 3 at. pct Cr). Later investigation showed that, if chromium was replaced by small amounts (3 to 5 at. pct) of v,1 Ti, Nb, Ta, Mo, or w,1 the a phase or the R phase was again stabilized. Whether stabilization of complex crystal structures is possible by small additions of iron, cobalt, or nickel to Mn-Si is not known. Investigation of the Co-Mn-Si system4 shows the presence of several ternary phases, but at cobalt concentrations higher than 10 at. pct. In the present work the ternary systems Fe-Mn-Si and Co-Mn-Si were investigated at low iron and cobalt concentrations (< 7 at. pct Fe or Co) in search of phases of complex crystal structure. Experimental Procedure. The alloys were pre-pared by induction melting Co (99.8 pct), Si (99.9 pct), electrolytic Fe (99.88 pct), and Mn (99.9 pct) in recrystallized alumina crucibles under an inert atmosphere of argon gas. The alloy specimens were wrapped in molybdenum foil, sealed in argon-filled (at 1/2 atm) silica capsules and annealed for 72 hr at 1000" 1°C, and water-quenched. The use of argon-filled capsules was found to reduce the losses during annealing and the molybdenum foil prevented reaction of the manganese with silica. The total weight loss due to annealing and melting was found to be less than 1 pct for each alloy. The alloys were not analyzed chemically. A part of each annealed specimen was polished and examined metal-lographically using etching solutions, a) 0.1 to 0.5 pct oxalic acid solution in water, or b) 0.5 pct HNOs in methyl alcohol. Even though the etching solutions were quite dilute, the specimens were heavily etched and stained if the etching time exceeded more than 5 sec. Etching times found suitable were usually 1 to 3 sec. For X-ray diffraction work, a part of each annealed specimen was powdered by crushing after the exposed surface was ground off. X-ray diffraction patterns were taken with powder specimens using a 20-cm-diam asymmetrical focusing camera and Fe K radiation. These powder patterns were found quite satisfactory for the purpose of phase identification. However, X-ray diffraction patterns of single-phase alloy powder specimens were also taken using a Siemens diffractometer and filtered Cr-Ka radiation for greater resolution of the diffraction lines. Results and Discussion. In the Fe-Mn-Si system a new ternary phase was found at 1000°C between the p manganese and the MnsSi phase regions. The approximate phase relationships in this region of the 1000°C isothermal section are shown in Fig. 1. The new ternary phase, designated as the K phase, was found to occupy a narrow region about 1 at. pct in width and extending from Fee.oMn74.5Silg.5 to Fe.Mn.Silg.. At the high-iron content region, the K phase was found in equilibrium with the p manganese and the MnsSi phases but, at the low-iron content end of the K-phase region, the phases in equilibrium with the K phase were the p manganese phase, the MnsSi phase, and another new phase, designated in Fig. 1 as the v phase. In connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on utilization of Cuban lateritic ores, a comprehensive review was made of the chemical literature on nickel and cobalt. Initially, the review had as its objective the selection, from the voluminous literature dealing with the chemistry of these two metals, of only those references to reactions that were especially pertinent, or at least closely related, to the field of extractive metallurgy. Later, the coverage was extended to include references to the techniques and plant applications of extractive metallurgical procedures for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. In this report, the period from January 1929 to July 1955 has been covered, as it seemed logical that recent literature should be of greatest value. This cutoff date was established in order that the bibiliography could be issued at an early date, inasmuch as currently much work is in progress on the lateritic ores. Later, a supplement will be prepared extending the coverage to about 1900.

The following work, performed by Mr. W. A. Tucker, of the class of 1893, in the mining department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, seems to me to be worthy of publication. I believe it has always been considered that the presence of arsenic especially interferes with the extraction of gold by the cyanide method. Mr. Tucker&apos;s work, although made on a laboratory scale, certainly seems to disprove this view, and to show that even with a very large percentage of arsenic present in the ore, a high extraction may be obtained without an excessive consumption of potassic cyanide. The ore from which the concentrates were obtained was a gray argillaceous schist. and slate, with stringers and veins of quartz running through it. It carried free gold and about 12 per cent. of sulphides. The ore was crushed with stamps; the free gold was collected in the ordinary way on silver-amalgamated copper plates; and the sulphides, which consisted chiefly of arsenopyrite and pyrite, with very small amounts of galena and chalcopyrite, were concentrated and collected by means of a Frue vanner. A carefully-taken sample gave: Gold,........6.17 ounces per ton. Arsenic,.......30.6 per cent. The latter figure would correspond to about 66.5 per cent,. of arsenopyrite in the concentrates. The work to be done was outlined as follows: 1. Sizing the concentrates; 2. Assaying the different sizings; 3. Treating these different sizings with ECy of different degrees of strength for different periods of time.

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

Discussion: M. D. G. Salamon* (Fellow): The theoretical principles behind the techniques of calculation used by the authors was formulated and published during the period 1962- 65. These principles, together with their practical implications, were summarized in a review paper in 1966.1 Now, in February, 1970, we have this long and comprehensive paper discussing the practical application of the theory. I think this is good progress. The large number of practical examples treated in the paper clearly demonstrates not only the skill and knowledge of the authors, but also the versatility of the techniques of analysis. I feel that the techniques described by the authors, and their improved versions, will revolutionize mine planning. I suggest that no shaft system or stoping layout should be planned in future without an adequate rock mechanics analysis. It seems that it will be progressively more difficult to white wash mistakes in rock mechanics and attribute their costly outcome to normal mining risk. We should not, however, become complacent. There is still a lot to learn and do in the future. I do not want to discuss tonight the question of further research but instead, I will raise two other problems which may hinder the future progress of practical rock mechanics. To carry out work similar to that described in the paper, mine managements require men who are capable of doing the work and who have the most efficient techniques of analysis at their disposal. As a research engineer I have been associated with the development of techniques of analysis. I can assure you that these have undergone an amazingly rapid development during the last six years. We have seen the change from the use of the electrolytic tank analogue and manual integration to the method described by the authors, that is, to the employment of the automatic network analogue and computer integration. But this is not the end. In a recent paper Prof R. P. Plewman2 and his co-authors described a completely digital technique. Here the process of calculating on- and off-reef quantities is integrated into one computer run. But these sophisticated methods of computation are useless without men to make intelligent use of them. During the last few years a new breed of mining engineers has appeared on the scene - the Rock Mechanics Engineer. I feel it is timely to call the attention of the senior members of this Institute to the fact that this new breed will succeed in carrying out its duties in a valuable manner only if we manage to attract to its ranks young engineers of the right quality. The requirements are high. The top rock mechanics engineers have to be good mine planners and they have to understand the essence of sophisticated theories. Without these attributes they will not succeed in the long term and the industry will not gain the benefit of available knowledge. To attract this quality of engineers the industry will have to ensure that rock mechanics is accepted by all concerned as a career which could lead to the top echelons of our profession. Finally, I would like to make one or two remarks concerning Part I of the paper. In Sections 3.1 and 3.2 the authors describe methods of determining the normal stress on the reef plane and the convergence distribution in the excavations. The description as given applies only to a horizontal reef. When the reef is inclined the situation is more complex since a shear component of stress on the intact reef and a ride component in the excavations must then also be determined. These can be calculated by methods similar to that described in the paper.3 The practical application of the method of calculating the released energy (Section 3.4) is in the comparison of various stoping layouts to establish an order of preference in terms of decreasing rates of energy release. To carry out these comparisons effectively, the calculations must be carried out in a manner by which the values of energy per unit area obtained are comparable. I would like to note in this respect that the method of calculation given in the paper is valid without reservation only if there is no elastic contact between the hanging and foot walls in the mined-out area. If there is contact then the calculated energy values are correct only if the mined out area is increased in small steps during the analysis. My second point in this regard is concerned with the practical method of calculation as described in Sections 3.4 (ii)-(iii). Firstly, I would like to suggest that the energy calculation should be carried out, as far as possible, by using always the same scale on the analogue. Secondly, the reading of current on a pin should be followed by the removal of that pin to obtain the corresponding reading of potential. The product of these two values will be proportional to the energy released during the mining of the small area corresponding to that pin. The method suggested by the authors tends to mask possible danger points in the layouts, since they obtain an average value for a time period, say, for six months.

"Abstract—Detailed oxygen isotope mapping of rhyolites in and around the Kidd Creek mine indicates that the orebodies are associated with relatively low (<12‰) whole rock values that extend up to 200 m laterally from ore. The zone of low d18O values is overlain stratigraphically by a carapace of higher (>13‰) values that extends up to 1.5 km laterally from and 300 m to 500 m above ore. Immediately above the stratigraphically highest orebody this carapace is cut by a zone of lower d18O values extending from the ore zone. Zones of higher d18O values also occur in massive rhyolite bodies that occur in the footwall of the orebodies.The zone of low d18O values partly coincides with a Na2O depletion anomaly associated with hydrothermal alteration, except that the Na2O depletion anomaly has a greater lateral extent, and the low d18O anomaly extends farther into the stratigraphic hanging wall. These data suggest that d18O mapping may detect hanging wall alteration above massive sulfide bodies more effectively than conventional lithogeochemistry. Zones of high d18O values, which define zones through which large quantities of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids have passed, may also have usefulness in exploration.Oxygen isotope variations at Kidd Creek record three stages of a hydrothermal system that evolved in temperature with time, as follows: (1) an early, low-temperature event that produced rocks with high d18O values, (2) a high-temperature event that produced rocks with lower d18O values, and (3) a later, low-temperature event that also produced rocks with high d18O values. The high d18O signature of the massive rhyolite was recorded during early-stage, low-temperature (<200°C) alteration, and was probably preserved owing to decreases in permeability associated with low-temperature silicification. Foi notado que o rejeito originado a partir do beneficiamento do caulim é rico em silico-aluminatos, apresentando assim potencial em processo de adsorção. O presente trabalho consiste em avaliar o potencial adsortivo do rejeito do caulim quimicamente tratado. Foi utilizado o corante de azul de metileno (AM) em solução aquosa para se ter o conhecimento de adsorção do rejeito de caulim in natura e calcinado a 700ºC onde ambos foram submetidos a uma ativação química com H2SO4. Após o equilíbrio da amostra do rejeito do caulim junto ao azul de metileno, suas concentrações foram determinadas por espectrofotometria. Os resultados preliminares comprovam que o rejeito apresenta uma boa capacidade adsortiva para concentração de até 50,00 mg/L de AM, demostrando, potencial para ser utilizado na remoção de corantes em tratamento de afluentes.

Iodide zirconium was combined with calculated amounts of ZrO2 or master alloys and arc-melted. Annealing treatments were carried out at 21 temperature levels. Metallographic examination of the heat treated specimens permitted construction of the binary phase diagram from zirconium to ZrO2. Oxygen additions to zirconium raise the transformation temperature as well as the melting point. Features of the diagram include the peritectic formation of beta, the formation of alpha directly from the melt, an intermediate phase ZrOB with a&apos; range of homogeneity, and a eutectic between alpha and Zr02. PHASE relationships in the Zr-0 system were determined in the range 0 to 66. 7 atomic pct 0 (ZrO,). Arc-melted alloys were annealed at temperature levels between 600" and 2000°C. Determination of the phase boundaries was accomplished by metallographic evaluation of specimens quenched from the various temperatures. Incipient melting techniques were used to determine solidus curves, and X-ray diffraction work was employed to study the lattice parameters of the a solid solution and the phase ZrO,. Experimental Procedures Westinghouse "Grade 1" iodide zirconium crystal bar (approximately 99.8 pct pure) was employed for the investigation. This material is substantially free of the impurity inclusions characteristic of most zirconium metal. Previous work has shown it to be the most satisfactory grade for phase diagram studies. The zirconium crystal bar, as-received, was coated with corrosion product from autoclave tests by which its grade designation is determined. The bars were sand blasted lightly, pickled for 1 min in a 20 pct HN0,-5 pct HF aqueous solution, rinsed in water and acetone, and dried. The bars were rolled to about 1/32 in. strip, cut into 10 in. lengths, and pickled again. The material was sheared to approximately Y4 in. squares, cleaned with acetone, and stored for use. Two pounds of specially prepared "chemically pure," and 100 grams of spectrographic grade ZrO, were obtained for the preparation of alloys. The "Specpure" ZrO, was obtained from Johnson, Mat-they Co.. Ltd.. and Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Div. of National Lead Co. supplied the other grade of oxide. The "chemically pure" material (henceforth referred to as C.P. ZrO,) was used for the preparation of all alloys employed in the determination of phase relationships. A limited number of alloys were prepared with the "Specpure" oxide to recheck certain phase boundaries. Analyses of the two grades of oxide are given in Table I. The C.P. ZrOI was received in powder form, not suitable for arc melting. Therefore, this material was compressed to wafers 1 in. in diameter and about Vn in. thick. These were segmented and stored for use. The "Specpure" material, in the form of small granules, was suitable for use in the as-received condition. A nonconsumable electrode arc-melting furnace was used to prepare alloys. A water-cooled copper crucible and tungsten-tipped electrode were employed. The material was placed in the crucible and rapidly melted under a protective atmosphere of helium gas by striking the arc on a tungsten stud and directing it upon the charge material. THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. Until recently, the generation of electricity was regulated in all states and the value of generation assets in a regulatory environment for ad valorem taxation were based largely on the book value of the plant plus the rate of return on capital allowed by the state regulatory agency. This method of appraising utility generation assets is inappropriate in a competitive environment because past capital expenditures are not relevant in a competitive environment. However, it is not clear what valuation methods are appropriate after restructuring. This paper identifies key problems and advantages of other appraisal methodologies and makes comments on various valuation and taxation methods.

Cleaned coal is becoming an increasingly popular fuel with the utilities for a variety of reasons. Generally, the greatest impetus to burn a cleaned or prepared coal fuel comes from the need to control airborne pollutants.Long-range planning is a standard practice for electric utilities, forecasts of demand must be made well into the future. Since the lead time required to provide new facilities is often as long as 10 years and the cost very high , planning becomes an important task.For a utility that owns and directs the operation of its coal mines, the mine planning or fuel acquisition planning takes on the magnitude of other corporate planning functions. It is from this perspective that a utility would view coal preparation. Except for the interaction of a coal-fi red plant on the actual mine design the planning considerations o f a beneficiating facility for a captive mine or a contract raw coal supply are about the same. Because TransAlta Utilities is currently supplied from captive mines, this discussion will tend to focus in that direction.It is the role of a planner to plan. This is easy to say but it is not always easy to do. Often we are working within a context that resembles the geological time scale. Frequently the objectives are not clearly defined when we begin and ultimately our plans are tested in the waters of government regulations and cost benefit analyses .Planning for beneficiation of Plains coal, or any coal, provides just such a test. The planner&apos;s role in this endeavour requires a wide vision. While parts of the process may be amenable to classical methods of project scheduling, the broad range of subjects and interaction of seemingly unrelated tasks is sure to obscure some of the considerations that must be made. Therefore, the planner&apos;s chief role is coordinating the work of many experts and specialists toward the final objective.Among the specialists are combustion , geo technical, mining, civil , and mineral processing engineers , geologists, hydrogeologists, soil, and reclamation experts to list a few.When one considers coal beneficiation, the planning part o f that consideration is probably more complex than any other single engineering function. Due to the company&apos;s location in the Alberta Plains and the proximity o f the mine to the thermal generating station, this paper will tend to emphasize that situation.Beneficiation may offer some advantages over run-of-mine coal to the power plant opeator. Some of these advantages are: removal of a contaminant, power plant efficiency gains , lower plant capital costs (for new plants), possible lower mining costs."

"The monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols are universal flotation reagents because they can be used as collectors, frothers, surfactants, and depressants. Their collecting power was demonstrated for different minerals including coal and quartz.It was confirmed in this work that monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols could be used as collector in flotation of quartz in a monobubble Hallimond cell. Since feldspar does not float in the same cell, it was also shown that selective separation of quartz and feldspar in the Hallimond tube is possible. However, a trail to use the monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycols compounds for separation of quartz and feldspar by flotation of mixture of these minerals in a Mechanobr laboratory flotation machine was futile, indicating that these reagents required special environment for flotation.Most probable parameter responsible for a decrease in quartz flotation in the flotation machine is the hydrodynamics of process, and different adsorption/desorption conditions. To prove this, another series of experiments was carried out to separate quartz and feldspar, in which a laboratory flotation column was utilized. The performance of the flotation column was in between that of in the Hallimond tube and flotation machine. These experiments confirmed that the hydrodynamics of flotation plays a vital role in flotation of quartz with monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol compounds."

"Although heap leaching may be perceived as a somewhat low-tech route for the extraction of low-grade minerals, the underlying physical, chemical and biological processes are in fact extremely complex. There has been increased interest in heap leaching of sulphide minerals in recent years with the advent of controlled bio-heap leaching, and the need to mine more marginal ore deposits.A detailed investigation into the dynamics of heap leach processes has provided much insight into the underlying complexities, and has led to the development of a sophisticated modelling tool, HeapSim. Some of the sub-processes that are modelled include mineral kinetics, particle size effects, bacterial growth, oxidation and adsorption, gas adsorption, pore diffusion, bulk advection, gas balance and heat conservation. The interplay of these various sub-processes is illustrated in the paper.Two case studies are presented which illustrate specific features of the model for different applications and how these have helped to identify key areas of concern. The first is focussed on chalcocite heap bioleaching, which shows that by nature of the reaction the process is strongly dependent on the initial supply of acid to the mineral site. In heaps this acid supply can be severely limited by the rate of diffusion from channels of flowing solution into stagnant zones of the heap, whereas in narrow-bore laboratory columns this effect is not observed."
