In attempting to tell the general public about the coal industry's land reclamation efforts, we have often said, "We're not doing things by the book, because we're still writing it." Like any good catchphrase, the statement is not only striking but true. It is particularly true in the mountains of Appalachia, where the problems of mining; and of reclamation are made more intense by the nature of the terrain. Mining and reclaiming the land "by the book' --which is to say by the methods of contour mining traditionally used in hill country--hasn't worked too well. So a lot of conscientious coal operators and associations are trying new methods--new ways of mining, new machines for seeding and planting, and new species to seed. Not all their experience can be transplanted to other areas, and of course I don't believe that Appalachia is the only place where new methods are being developed. Nevertheless, there's enough action in Appalachia to make a detailed examination rewarding, so let's focus on the hills to see what's new.

This report presents an economic mineral assessment and Inventory of mines and prospects In the approximately 176,000-acre Patagonia Mountains-Canelo Hills Unit of Coronado National Forest. Deposits or areas most likely to experience future development are characterized in terms of their economics, based on data acquired by the author from a variety of sources, and supplemented by USBM field data collected by other workers in 1990 and 1991. Numerous mine maps, rock-chip sample assays, and detailed descriptions of mine and prospect sites are in this report and appendixes. Heavy but sporadic mining, mainly between the 1850's and 1950's was nearly all confined to the Patagonia Mountains. High-grade sulfide veins, replacements, and skarn deposits accounted for most of the production, which included large quantities of zinc, lead, copper, and silver, and considerable quantities of gold. Small Quantities of molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and placer gold have been mined. Most of the traditionally mined metalliferous sites will not see future activity due to the low tonnages present and removal of most high-grade rock. Possible future development areas include copper porphyries and breccia pipes; most are too deeply buried for current development. Localities where similar deposits may be concealed are identified.

The treatment of aqueous CuSO4-H2SO4- As-Sb solutions by electrodialysis in order to separate and concentrate species of interest has recently been studied. Results show that it is possible to separate copper from arsenic in electrodialysis cells. The separation of copper from antimony is also possible. Transport rate ranges that could be achieved, depending on experimental conditions, are 0.2 to 0.6 mol per hour per square metre of membrane for copper, 0.65 to 2.8 for sulphate, and 0.016 to 0.03 for arsenic. Transport rates for antimony were inconclusive due to its very low solubility in the studied systems. Solution agitation and increasing temperature markedly increased the process rates. Advancements in this area require further work in both the thermodynamics (speciation) and kinetics of complex CuSO4- H2SO4-H2O systems, where impurities, other than As and Sb, and additives should be taken into account to gain a deeper understanding of the application of ED to copper electrorefining electrolytes

"In this study, a three level Box- Behnken factorial design combined with Response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling of process parameters of Multi Gravity Separator (MGS) for recovery Iron values from sub grade iron ore, Deposit No. 5, Bailadila complex has been developed. The three significant operational parameters of MGS, Drum rotational speed (RPM), Drum inclination (degrees) and quantity of wash water (LPM) were considered in the experimental work. Other parameters like feed percent solids, shake frequency and shake amplitude were maintained constant. The ‘as received’ sub grade iron ore sample is admixture of lump and fines and chemically assayed 40.80% Fe, 40.90% SiO2, 0.24% Al2O3 and 0.22% Loss on Ignition (LOI). The obtained results were evaluated with the Box-Behnken factorial design, RSM and also Quadratic programming(QP). Second order response functions were produced for Fe in terms of grade (%) and recovery (%) of the concentrate fraction. Taking advantage of QP, it was observed that maximum grade of 62.21% Fe achieved at an inclination of 4.3degrees, 2.7LPM of wash water and at a drum speed of 198 RPM. Similarly a maximum Fe recovery of 65.37% weight can be achieved at 4.3degrees inclination, 2.6LPM wash water and at a rotational speed of 212 RPM Predicted values of responses obtained using model equations were in good agreement with the experimental values. The influence of the process variables of the multi gravity separator concentrator on grade and recovery of concentrate fraction were presented and discussed."

A mineral resource survey of rock types and geologic structures indicates that the Mt. Henry RARE II area has low potential for the discovery of metallic minerals. Potential for coal and geothermal resources is negligible. Essentially, the Mt. Henry RARE II area has had no claim-staking activity, nor has any mine been developed in it. SETTING Size and Location The 23,000-acre (9,308 ha) "1t. Henry RARE II area (No. 1-666) lies within the Kootenai National Forest approximately 36 mi (58 km) north of Libby, Montana, in the Purcell Mountain; of Lincoln County. Irregularly shaped, the area measures roughly 5-1/2 mi (8.9 km) north-south by 8 mi (12.9 km) Past-west, and lies about 1-1/2 mi (7.2 km) south of the Canadian border.

SUCCESSFUL blast-furnace operation depends upon securing an optimum balance between a number of important variables. This balance will vary somewhat from furnace to furnace in the same plant and with raw materials available in different plants. It is difficult to isolate the effect of any one variable unless it has a rather pronounced effect upon the efficiency of operation. The physical properties of iron ore and coke are known to affect the process, yet it is difficult to set up any definite yardstick by which these differences can be appraised. In recent years, whenever practicable, operators have taken steps to obtain better control over the absolute size and uniformity of size of the ore and coke. The size and physical character of the stone, however, have received comparatively little attention, emphasis being placed upon chemical composition, fluxing efficiency, and action as a desulphurizing agent. Since the stone occupies only about 10 per cent of the volume of the stock column, its influence upon permeability is less than that of the ore and the coke. The large pieces now used have a tendency to roll to the center and thus increase the permeability of this part of the stock column. Smaller pieces would be more effective in promoting the permeability of denser portions of the stock. The size and physical properties of blast- furnace stone are important also for reasons best understood by considering the results obtained by the crushing and the sizing of iron ore. Crushing ore to about 2 in. at Provo, Utah, and to about I in. in Alabama produced material somewhat less permeable to gases, even though sized. In spite of some sacrifice in permeability, the efficiency of the process was improved by crushing and sizing the ore, as indicated by a substantial saving in fuel and increased output. This saving in fuel is due in large measure to more thorough reduction of ore in the upper part of the furnace and to a corresponding decrease in the amount of carbon consumed prematurely above the tuyeres by the reaction CO2 + C = 2CO ? 70,080 B.t.u. [I] The physical properties of stone, its size and rate of calcination are important because they influence the rate at which C02 is released and the completeness of calcination before reaching a level in the furnace where the temperature does not exceed 1050°C. (1920°F.). Briefly, carbon dioxide from the limestone or from the reduction of ore may cause premature com- bustion of carbon above the tuyeres. Assuming that 1000 lb. of limestone is used per ton of pig iron, about 435 lb. of C02 will be liberated during calcination of a good grade of stone. If all this CO2 from the stone were to oxidize carbon prematurely, about 120 lb. would be consumed above the tuyeres in a heat-absorbing reaction. The amount of carbon thus consumed when a

INTRODUCTION In this paper we present preliminary results of a research program in site characterization methodology. We are interested in under- standing the response of discontinuous rock to mechanical, hydrologic, and thermal loadings. To carry out such a study we selected a field site with simple geology, uniform distribution of lithologies, and easily verifiable boundary conditions on temperature, fluid flow and stresses. The spatial distribution of fractures at the site was established and tests were conducted to determine the temperature field, hydrology, rock-mass properties, and in situ stresses. As part of the study selected borehole instruments were compared to assess their performance and reliability. SITE GEOLOGY The study area is in the eastern part of South Table Mountain, a mesa near Golden, Colo. The exposed cap rock is a single lava flow of uniform thickness (6-7 m) that rests on the clastic sediments of the Denver Formation (Van Horn, 1976). The surface of the cap rock (N. 75º E., 3º S.) is topographically featureless and slopes south- southeast; drainage is predominantly downdip and punctuated by occasional contact springs. The age of the lava flow is 64-65 m.y., or early Paleocene. Paleo- botanic evidence confirms the upper part of the Denver Formation as Paleocene (Van Horn, 1976). "Good morning gentlemen. I am very pleased to have this opportunity to tell you a few of the things that happen within a completely unrelated activity, the electroplating industry, except that it does consume metals and has some slight similarity of problems so far as cyanide is concerned.First, just a few general terms about the industry. It is a relatively unsophisticated industry technically, and in many instances there are serious problems in obtaining staff that can operate the various systems that are currently available for destroying cyanide or precipitating metals.I would suggest to you that if you are investigating any system that you consider very seriously the personnel that are actually going to run it. The installation people; probably have some idea what it is all about but the operators must be chosen for their ability and not because they just happen to be available.We perhaps have another area in common. There is very little money for capital expenditures that produce no immediate return or even eventual return on the investment.The industry is largely made up of ""Jobbers"" who are strictly electroplating. There is another group in which the electroplating is captive as in large companions where it is a convenience operation. Also there are specialists, who do other things besides plating but it is a very major part of their operation. This applies to the automotive parts industry.Cyanide applications in the plating industry will be for copper, zinc, cadmium, silver, brass, and gold. Cyanide waste solutions come from those solutions adhering to the plated parts, and from the occasional discharge of the plating bath solutions. Also, in a related industry, the heat treating people with cyanide case hardening have some high concentrations of cyanide to dispose of. Concentrations of cyanide that we treat are 2500 parts per million or higher especially in wastes from heat treating. Solution volumes might be as low as 100 gallons per hour in a well run, carefully operated rinsing system. It may be as high as 3000 gallons per hour where dilution occurs."

A extração por solventes sinérgica dos metais cálcio, magnésio e níquel, presentes em soluções aquosas sulfúricas em níveis de concentração similares aos dos licores industriais HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leaching), foi avaliada neste trabalho empregando-se os extratantes comerciais Cyanex 272 e Cyanex 301. O uso de Cyanex 301 (10%v/v) sozinho não se mostrou eficiente, em decorrência do baixo percentual de extração e da baixa seletividade entre os metais. Quando misturado ao Cyanex 272, porém, observou-se a possibilidade de remoção seletiva de magnésio, deixando cálcio e níquel em solução. A melhor condição operacional foi obtida utilizando-se 5-10%v/v de Cyanex 301 e 20% de Cyanex 272, na faixa de pH entre 5,4-5,7, na qual se extraiu aproximadamente 70-80% de magnésio, 15-35% de cálcio e 10-15% de níquel.

The relationship between crystalline texture and magnetic anisotropy in a Co-10 pct Fe alloy has been investigated by means of X-ray pole .figures, hysteresis-loop tracings, and magnetic-torque measurements. The cold-rolled texture of a sample after 95 pct thickness reduction is of the "brass-type", that is, (110)[112/. At 500°C the cold-rolled material recrystallizes fo a (311)[112] orientation, plus a minor (210) [001] component. This texture persists up to 1400°C, at which point it is replaced by a secondary recrystallization texture, (111)[112]. Magnetic-torque measurements show that the easy axis of magnetization lies along the transverse direction in the cold-rolled material and changes to the rolling direction after primary recrystallization. This change is also reflected in the hysteresis characteristic; whereas the B-H loop along the rolling direction is nonsqunre with a low value of residual induction (750 vs 19,000 gauss at saturation) for the cold-rolled material, the annealed sample exhibits a very square loop with a large value of residual induction (16,000 gauss). Theoretical torque curves calculated from the texture data on the basis of magnetocystalline anisotropy energy compare favorably with the observed torque curves. Values of the crystal anisotropy constant, K1, obbained from these comparisons are in good quantitative agreement with single-crystal data. Furthermore, both the torque amplitude of the poly crystalline material and the magnitude of K1 obtained with a single crystal show an identical temperature dependence over the range from —195° 10 +220°C. It is thus conclzided that the magnetocrystalline anisotrpopy erlergy is chiefly I-esponsible. for the nzagnetic allisotropy of textured Co-10 pct Fe alloy. THE results of a study on the relationship between crystalline texture and magnetic anisotropy of an alloy containing 90 pct Co and 10 pct Fe by weight are reported in this paper. The alloy has an fcc structure: a saturation magnetization of about 19,000 gauss,2 and a nearly zero value of magnetoatriction.3 puzey4 has reported a large crystalline anisotropy constant of -7.4 X 105 ergs per cu cm, indicating the (111) directions as the easy axes of magnetization. Hence, texture variations resulting from cold work and annealing are expected to introduce a magnetic anisotropy in the polycrystalline material through the alignment of these (111) easy directions. In the present study, magnetic anisotropy of both rolled and annealed strips was determined by magnetic-torque measurements and hysteresis-loop tracings The results were correlated quantitatively with calculations based on texture data obtained by the X-ray pole-figure technique. It is established that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is indeed chiefly responsible for the magnetic anisotropy of textured Co-10 pct Fe alloy. EXPERIMENTAL Material Preparation. The alloy nominally contained 90 pct Co, 9.5 pct Fe, and 0.5 pct Mn by weight, the chief impurities being nickel, carbon, and silicon (less than 0.5 pct total). The cast ingot was rolled to strips 10 mils thick and slit to 1 in. in width. After strand annealing at 900°C in a hydrogen atmosphere, these strips were further cold-rolled to various thicknesses down to 0.25 mil (97.5 pct reduction), with samples collected for study of the development of texture and magnetic anisotropy as a function of thickness reduction. subsequently, samples cold-rolled from 100 mils to 0.25 mil were obtained, thus extending the thickness reduction range to 99.75 pct. Mining law has developed in Great Britain (GB) over centuries, mainly in response to lessons learned after disasters and other major incidents. This has led to a culture of preventing repeat accidents, rather than predicting and controlling unsafe acts or conditions.This paper explains how, initially in response to a government drive to reduce the burden on industry, the opportunity was taken to review and reform all 48 sets of GB mining-specific law into a single document. The high temperature mechanical properties of stainless steels after fast neutron irradiation are discussed in the light of effects caused by lattice dattmage and effects caused by helium generated from n,a transmutations. Embrittlement at high temperatures is due to helium accumulation at grain boundaries and to cavity formation and proPagation along grain boundaries. Following from the embrittlement mechanism, it is suggested that when deformation occurs by mechanisms associated with super plasticity, helium ac-curnulation at boundaries should be attenuated and cavities, if formed, should be nonpropagating. As the mean free Path between interphase boundaries of a two-phase Fe-Cr-Ni alloy was decreased, the degree of superplastic deforrnation at 870°C increased, as vneaszired by total elongation and by the expottent m = a log 'a/a log 'i. This alloy and type 304 stainless steel were cyclotron irradiated in an a-particle beam to a helium concentration of -1 x 10 atom He per atom. The stainless steel specimen was embrittled, but the ductility of irradiated two-phase Fe-Cr-Ni alloys correlated with the values of. m during 'defor-malion. The .finest grained, helium-injected specimens that deforrned with highest m values exhibited the largest elongations to ,fracture. These results could be correlated with metallographic observations of cavity behavior: the propensity for intergranular propagation was lessened as the m value increased. It is concluded that superplastic deformation is ef-fectizle in attenuating helium embrittlement at elevated temperatures. One of the principal problems associated with development of fast breeder reactors is application of alloys such that suitable fuel cladding results. Stainless steels and other Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, because of highly acceptable nuclear characteristics, represent the primary materials for this component, and an exhaustive research and development effort is being conducted. The main deficiency of these materials has been a severe loss of ductility at high temperatures after fast neutron irradiation. An extensive body of mechanical property data and microstructural observations has provided an adequate phenomenological description of embrittlement; in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy studies, a reasonably acceptable embrittlement mechanism has been obtained. Following from this mechanism, it is suggested in the present work that ductility would be enhanced if deformation could occur by mechanisms associated with the phenomenon of superplasticity. Experiments to test this hypothesis have been conducted, and the results are presented and discussed in this paper. IRRADIATION EMBRITTLEMENT AT HIGH TEMPERATURE Austenitic stainless steels have been irradiated to accumulated fast neutron fluences of 1020 to 1022 nvt at temperatures between 60" and 600°C. Specimens that have been exposed to these conditions and subsequently tensile tested at temperatures between 600" and about 900°C exhibit approximately 5 pct total elongation to fracture.'-3 For unirradiated specimens receiving a nearly identical thermal exposure, total elongation at these test temperatures is about 45 pct. Examination of irradiated specimens has shown that fracture propagation is entirely intergranular. These phenomenological aspects of irradiation embrittle-ment at elevated temperatures are well known and are not generally disputed. Although the explanation of this phenomenon has been controversial, a mechanism for ernbrittlement has emerged that accounts reasonably well for the observed mechanical behavior. The controversy resulted primarily from an indeterminate role of neutron-in-duced lattice damage, if any, and a presumed, but experimentally unverified, contribution to embrittle-ment from helium generated by n,a transmutations. Recently, Holmes and coworkers4 have conducted experiments that separate these effects, and the results are instructive in formulation of the ernbrittlement mechanism. Holmes el al.4 irradiated type 304 stainless steel in EBR-I1 to a fluence of 1.4 x 1022 nvt (E > 0.18 mev); the irradiation temperature was 538" * 48°C or, in terms of absolute melting point, 0.49 * 0.03 T,. After irradiation, tensile tests were conducted at temperatures of 21" to 870.C, the specimens first being annealed for 30 min at each test temperature. In addition, thin sections of irradiated specimens were annealed for 1 hr at identical temperatures, electro and examined by transmission electron microscopy. Thus, for a given temperature, it was possible to correlate mechanical properties with the defect structure. At room temperature, the yield stress of irradiated specimens was a factor of 2.5 higher than unirradi-ated specimens exposed to an equivalent thermal history. Electron microscopic examination of the irradiated specimen revealed a high density of lattice damage in the form of Frank sessile dislocation loops and polyhedral voids. Holmes et al.4 concluded that the presence of this defect substructure caused the increase in yield stress and that after irradiation in a fast neutron flux at 0.49 Tm, substantial lattice dam-age persists. The Harris No. 1 Mine, located in Boone County, WV, has been longwalling the Eagle Coalbed for over 30 years. Harris has experienced numerous interactions associated with the extensive room-and-pillar and longwall mining operations which have been conducted in the overlying No. 2 Gas Coalbed. The problems have included roof falls, excessive rib sloughage, and gateroad and bleeder entry closure. A detailed evaluation of the multiple seam experiences at Harris No. 1 Mine was conducted as part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) nation-wide multiple seam mining case history data base. One observation from the Harris gateroad case histories was that smaller, critically loaded, upper seam pillars seemed to cause more severe ground conditions than did wider pillars. The LaModel program was used to investigate this supposition, and the results confirmed that "critical" sized pillars do transmit the highest amounts of stress to adjacent seams. In addition, the data suggest that the probability of a major multiple seam mining interaction increases when the depth of cover is 1,000 ft or greater and when the Eagle seam pillars have a Analysis of Longwall Pillar stability factor less than 1.50.

The specific objective of this three year study is to investigate the means of reestablishing non-polluted hydrologic systems in areas where surface mining directly impacts shallow ground-water resources. The research area chosen for the study is located near Colstrip, Montana it a new mine site where chemical analysis of core samples from the overburden suggested that excessive concentrations of several elements would he encountered during the mining process. This report discusses local vegetation; soils; and regional geology, and hydrology. Stratigraphic cross sections and regression analyses were used to study the litho-chemical relationships in the overburden. Cross sections indicated Inimical material may be related to both rock tune and position within the overburden profile. In overburden zoness where clay content was high, there was a greater probability that Pb, Cu, Ni, and Mn concentrations would also be higher than average; similarly, the likelihood of overburden exceeding a suspect level became less as the sand content increased. Highest value, of conductance were usually found within a few meters of the surface. High concentrations of clay, nickel, and zinc were frequently found directly above and below the Rosebud coal. Regression analysis indicated overburden SAR was predictable with only a Na analysis. A strong relationship also existed in the overburden between conductance, Ca, and Mg.

Compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais tem sido alvo de diversos estudos na atualidade. A determinação de suas propriedades tecnológicas, bem como o tipo de fratura apresentada são importantes ferramentas para a fabricação desses novos materiais. Assim, esse trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a região da fratura de compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras de bagaço de cana-deaçúcar ensaiados em tração. Os compósitos foram ensaiados em tração e a região da fratura foi analisada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados mostraram que tanto a matriz polimérica quantos os compósitos apresentaram fratura frágil, evidenciada por marcas de rio.

INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. The electrical conductivity of electrolytes is very important in metal electrowinning and electrorefining processes as it has a very large influence on the energy consumption. There are few measurements of the electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes available. The electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes were measured over the following range of concentrations, 100 to 200 g/L H2SO4, 0 to 80 g/L Zn and 0 to 20 g/L Mg, at temperatures from 25 to 60 C. The specific conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes may be expressed as a function of concentrations of sulphuric acid, zinc and magnesium and temperature by the following equation: k(S/cm) = 0.004 + 0.00115 t + 0.00282 [H2SO4] t - 0.00114 [M] t + 0.3442 [H2SO4] - 0.0451 [1-12SO4]2 - 0.1058 [M]ò[H2SO4] - 0.0224 (M] + 0.0286 [M] 2 where t is temperature (C), [H2S04](moI/L) is sulphuric acid concentration and [M](mol/L) is a sum of zinc and magnesium concentrations, ([Zn]+[Mg]). The specific conductivity of zinc electrolytes is a function of the concentrations of the hydrogen ion and free water molecule, which are calculated by taking into account the second ionisation constant of sulphuric acid and the stability- constants of zinc-sulphate and magnesium-sulphate complexes at 25 C.
