Constant-load creep-rupture tests at 1100°, 1300° and 1500°F were made on a Type-316, 18 Cr-8 Ni-ZMo, austenitic stainless steel to determine the relationship between ruptzire life and other aspects of creep behavior, The test program was designed on a statistical basis to check the variability of various creep properties and to determine emprically the dependence of minimutn creep rate and ruptzire life on initial stress, The dependence of the rupture life, tn, on the initial stress, a,, is found to be related to the stress dependence of the wrinimum creep rate, i,, and secondary creep strain, The instabilities or breaks found in the conventionual log - logt, plots can be traced to either a change in the linear dependence of log i, on log a, or to a change in secondary creep strain. In the alloy tested, rupture is found to be predowmanantly of the inter crystalline type, For this material, the secondary creep strain is -found to depend on the nature of the grain boundary precipitate, which affects grain boundary migration. It has been shown for a variety of metals and al tested at elevated temperatures under creep conditions that the empirical relationship exists between rupture life, tr, and minimum creep rate, i,. This relationship, in which C and a are in some cases independent of stress or temperature, shows in a general way that creep rupture depends on creep behavior prior to tertiary creep stage. To determine more fully the factors which control creep rupture requires, therefore, more knowledge of the relationship between rupture and creep behavior. To obtain such information, constant-load creep-rupture tests have been made on a Type-316, 18 Cr-8 Ni-2 Mo, austenitic stainless steel at 11000, 1300°, and 1500°F. These tests were designed on a statistical basis to determine the variability of the various creep properties measured and to determine empirically the stress dependence of minimum creep rate and rupture life. As a result of this work, various empirical relations have been established defining more closely the factor, C, in the relation between rupture life and minimum creep rate. This factor is found to be proportional to the amount of strain during secondary creep. The variation of secondary creep strain with rupture life and temperature is determined and its effect on rupture behavior discussed. The variability in minimum creep rate and rupture life is also dis- cussed and the dependence of these quantities on initial stress is interpreted. TEST MATERIAL AND TEST PROCEDURES The material tested is an austenitic stainless steel, AISI Type 316, of the following composition: C, 0.07 pct; Mn, 1.94 pct; P, 0.01 pct; S, 0.021 pct; Si, 0.38 pct; Cr, 18 pct; Ni, 11.4 pct; Mo, 2.15 pct; All 0.003 pct and N, 0.043 pct. The material was received as a hot-rolled 0.5-in. diam bar which was sectioned into 3.25 in. long blanks. Each blank was heat treated by holding 1/2 hr at 2000° F followed by water quenching. A 3/8-in. coupon was removed from each heat-treated blank and the microstructure was examined, the grain size determined, and the hardness measured. The microstructure was found to be uniform from blank to blank and the grain size was found to range from 4 to 6 ASTM numbers. Hardness, measured using a 20-kg load, varied between 127 and 148 Vpn. Tensile creep-rupture specimens having a 0.25 in. diam within a 1.5-in. reduced section were machined from the heat-treated blanks. Constant-load tests were made on these specimens at 1100°, 1300°, and 1500 F. Six specimens were tested at each stress level. Three creep-rupture machines were employed for tests at each temperature, two specimens being tested in each machine for each stress level. To minimize any effect due to local inhomogeneities along the length of the as-received bar the specimens were randomized before test. The formation of copper thio-complexes in sulfide solutions has been recognized for many years and the measured solubilities of certain copper sulfide minerals attributed to these complexes. Attempts to model this system have proposed either copper(I) or copper(II) thio-complexes, and these have been incorporated into computer programs for generating stability diagrams for the copper-sulfur-water system in order to delineate the region where the reductive dissolution of copper sulfide minerals is likely. In this paper it is proposed that the dissolution of copper from both ore bodies and sulfide tailings can be explained by the formation of the cupro-thio-complexes under anaerobic conditions. Stability diagrams are presented to depict the region and extent of the solubility.

Engineered Scavenger Compounds (ESCs), developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, are a novel class of compounds that can selectively recover a desired element from a solid or molten alloy. Lithium titanate (Li2Ti3O7 or L'20-3T'02) is being used as an ESC to recover lithium (Li) from Aluminum-Lithium (Al-Li) alloys. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that lithium titanate undergoes a phase change from an orthorhombic structure to a hexagonal structure. This change is due to the incorporation of Li in the matrix of the material and the effect of temperature. Although both are metastable, the hexagonal phase that forms during the scavenging of Li from Al-Li alloys appears to be the more stable phase. Recovering Li from the ESC by electrodeposition does not cause the structure to revert to the orthorhombic phase. Both the orthorhombic and the hexagonal structures of Li2Ti3O7 have similar scavenging capacities for Li. This paper proposes a new mechanism for the phase transformation.

This report contains the results of a technical and economic evaluation of conceptual systems for the underground mining, rubblization, and in situ retorting of deep oil shale deposits. Study efforts were first directed towards evaluation of the applicable geology, associated minerals, rock mechanics, in situ retorting, access mining, ventilation, rubblization, safety, and environmental impact factors. Conceptual systems were synthesized and then evaluated against these factors from both a technical and limited economic viewpoint. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed and, based upon this analysis, the following two systems were selected for further study: System II: Room and Pillar-Vertical Drill and Blast System IV: Tunnel Boring-Horizontal Ring Drill and Blast Due to the large number of variables to be considered, a computer program was developed and utilized to provide data for the cost trade-off studies and economic analysis. Results of the early computer runs indicated the value of the tool available? in the computer program and led to an extension in the contract to determine the sensitivity of the systems to several of the more apparent significant variables. These results in turn led to a refinement in the design assumptions and a better understanding of the technical and economic options available to an owner-operator of a Vertical Modified In Situ Shale Oil Extraction System. Graphite is elemental carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system as six-sided platelets. It occurs naturally and is mined. And it can be made artificially from petroleum coke in the form of shapes (electrodes) and powders. The market for most kinds of graphite in most end-uses was good in 2004. The 2005 graphite market looks positive. The major graphite prices, as given in Industrial Minerals, remained unchanged throughout the year. The preliminary 2004 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) prices for natural graphite showed almost no change for crystalline flake. They were $600/t ($544/st) in 2004 and$622/t ($564/st) in 2003. Mexican amorphous graphite was almost unchanged at $150/t ($136/st) in 2004 from$152/t ($138/st) in 2003.

The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo deposit in southwest Alaska is one of the world's largest porphyry deposits. The western part of the deposit was discovered by Cominco America in 1987, who sold the project to Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., in 2001. Northern Dynasty discovered the high-grade eastern part of the deposit in 2004 and went into a 50:50 partnership with Anglo American PLC in 2007, forming the Pebble Limited Partnership (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble Limited Partnership has continued to delineate the deposit through diamond drilling with the most recent resource estimate released in February 2010 (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). The Pebble deposit mineral resources comprise 5.94 billion tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 0.78% Cu EQ, containing 55 billion pounds of copper, 67 million ounces of gold and 3.3 billion pounds of molybdenum. Also delineated are 4.84 billion tonnes of inferred mineral resources grading 0.53% Cu EQ, containing 25.6 billion pounds of copper, 40.4 million ounces of gold and 2.3 billion pounds of molybdenum (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). Resources are calculated using a 0.3% Cu EQ cutoff. GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION Deposit Geology The Pebble deposit is located in the Kahiltna terrane, between terminal strands of the north-east-striking Lake Clarke strike-slip fault. This fault represents an accretionary boundary and separates the Kahiltna terrane to the north-west from the Peninsular terrane to the south-east (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble deposit represents a large magmatic-hydrothermal system centered on a group of 90 million year old porphyritic hornblende granodiorite intrusions. An east-west cross section through the southern part of the deposit (Figure 1A) shows the typical relationships between the various rock units which host sulfide mineralization. Sub-parallel ~96 million year old granodiorite and diorite sills were intruded into siltstones of the Jura-Cretaceous Kahiltna flysch. In the west, these sills were cut by a ~96 million year old alkalic intrusive complex composed of porphyritic monzonites and monzodiorites and related intrusion breccias (Bouley et al, 1995). The mineralized 90 million year old hornblende granodiorite intrusions cut all rock types and comprise four small stocks in the western part of the deposit and a larger pluton in the eastern part of the deposit. Recent deep drilling indicates that these intrusions coalesce at depth. The strongest porphyry-style mineralization is centered on the eastern granodiorite pluton and extends into the surrounding rock units (Figure 1A). The western half of the deposit crops out at surface, whereas the eastern side is un-conformably overlain by a cover sequence of Late Cretaceous to Eocene sedimentary and volcanic strata. The deposit was tilted 20º to the east during the Eocene.

Variações no tratamento termomecânico influenciam as propriedades dos metais e suas ligas. Em particular, na obtenção de chapas metálicas, a quantidade de passes de laminação e o grau de redução de cada etapa (caminho de laminação) influenciam na formação do estado deformado do material. Este estado, em conjunto com as condições de recozimento, determinará as propriedades finais do material. Este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a influência do caminho de laminação no tamanho de grão final de dois materiais de diferentes energias de falha de empilhamento (EFE): cobre UNS C11000 e latão UNS C26000. As propriedades mecânicas das ligas escolhidas são em grande parte determinadas pelo tamanho de grão médio, que podem proporcionar aos materiais boa resistência mecânica aliada à boa ductilidade, condições desejadas em aplicações de estampagem. O estudo foi conduzido impondo uma redução total de 62% nas chapas utilizando-se duas condições diferentes: quatro e seis passes de laminação. O recozimento foi comum para os dois casos e resultou em uma diferença significativa (6 ?m) entre os tamanhos de grão médios das amostras de latão, enquanto o mesmo não foi observado para o cobre. A distribuição obtida de tamanho de grão foi lognormal para todas as amostras, à exceção do latão laminado com quatro passes. Os resultados foram analisados qualitativamente à luz da estrutura dos materiais no estado encruado.

This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. In addition, depletion of some mines in Australia and South Africa has offset rising output at other properties. Indeed, when final mine output figures for 1988 become available, it may well be

Los proyectos Veladero, Jagüelito, el proyecto binacional Pascua-Lama y otros ubicados en la zona Valle del Cura, provincia de San Juan, Argentina necesitan una vía acceso que permita el tránsito de camiones capaces de transportar los insumos necesarios en sus etapas de construcción y explotación. En este sentido, el objetivo del trabajo estriba en seleccionar la alternativa más conveniente y así cuantificar los costos y beneficios derivados de la construcción de un camino de vinculación entre los proyectos mencionados y las localidades de Rodeo o Las Flores. La metodología aplicada es la comparación entre costos y beneficios entre las situaciones “con proyecto” (obra ejecutada) y “sin proyecto” (situación actual), de forma que en un futuro, la construcción del camino estudiado posibilitará el abastecimiento de insumos a los yacimientos ubicados en el Valle del Cura, provincia de San Juan.

White dross is a result of the aluminum oxidation during its primary production and is mainly composed of metallic aluminum, Al2O3, with minor amounts of AlN and some other oxides. Because of the great variety of phases, the quantitative characterization is complicated. This work shows a quantitative method to determine the main phases of white aluminum drosses by means of X-ray diffraction (the Rietveld method). Nowadays the Rietveld method is maybe the most useful method for obtaining quantitative phases information in multicomponent mixtures, this method permits relatively quick quantitative phase analysis by fitting the calculated X-ray diffraction profile with the observed one. The analysis were done using powder with a grain size less than 45 µm; to obtain the suitable material size the aluminum dross was grounded by ten minutes, several times. The grounded material was screened, and the material smaller than 45 µm was taken to quantitative XRD analysis. Keywords: Rietveld Method, Characterization, Aluminum dross.

The effects of compositions and firing temperatures on the physico-mechanical properties of blended Nsu fireclay and Nkalaha redbrick clay have been investigated. The clay samples were compounded according to the following ratios: 10:90, 20:80, 30:70, 40:60 50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10 in the order Nsu: Nkalaha respectively, and test samples made and fired at 9000C, 10000C 11000C and 12000C. The properties tested for were the modulus of rupture, porosity, shrinkage, apparent density, water absorption and bulk density. From the results obtained, it is inferred that the blends have a maximum service temperature of 11000C, with the 30: 70 blend presenting the best characteristics. A conclusion is drawn to the effect that the blend could be adapted for the production of ceramic earthenware, electrical porcelain pin insulators, cement manufacture and for refractory linings where temperature requirements are less severe.

To better understand the Co-Mo interaction in maraging steels, the precipitate reversion behavior of two alloys closely related to the 18 Ni-250 grade has been studied. The reversion experiment is carried out by aging at a low temperature, T1 (preaging temperature), for some period of time and then aging at a higher temperature, T2, called the reversion tetnperature. Aging and reversion tmzperatures used were in the range 679 to 1050°F. Reversion is marked by an increase in resistivity and a decrease in hardness. It teas found that some reversion took place at all cornbinations of T1 and T2 but that pronounced rei3ersion resulfed for an Fe-18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo-8 pcl Co alloy exposed to preagz'ng' temperatures at or below 850°F. A similar alloy not containing cobalt exhibited no such discontinuity in reversion behazior with TI. The results are interpreted in terms of two types of molybdenum-rich precipitates, one nucleated at dislocations and the other in the matrix. The increased supersaturation resulting from the presence oj- cobalt evidently provides sufficient energy to nucleate the matrix phase. Anotnalies in the temperature dependence of the resistivity decrease and peak hurdness in the Fe-18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo-8 pct Co alloy as a junction of aging temperature noted in an earlier study are explained on this basis. SEVERAL investigatorsl-9 have studied the details of the precipitation-hardening reaction of the maraging steels. The great majority of conclusions have been drawn from transmission electron microscopy. Although much has been learned by this method, alternate techniques which will give information earlier in the aging process are needed for a more complete understanding of the series of precipitation steps probably involved in the aging reaction. Peters and cupp'' have recently shown, by measurements of the kinetics of precipitation, that an 18 pct Ni-Co-Mo maraging steel shows a distinct change in precipitation behavior at aging temperatures below 850°F. The results were interpreted in terms of the existence of two types of precipitates at low aging temperatures. Only one precipitate type is present at higher aging temperatures. The low-temperature precipitate was found to be a particularly effective strengthener. No evidence for the additional low-temperature precipitate was found in the 18 pct Ni-5 pct Mo ternary alloy. The object of this investigation was to study further the characteristics of the two types of precipitates and the interaction between cobalt and molybdenum characterizing this system. Some preliminary experiments indicated a difference in reversion behavior in specimens aged above and below 850°F. This suggested that knowledge of the reversion behavior might shed some light on these two questions. Hardy and Heal11 have defined reversion as the loss of hardness, electrical conductivity, or other properties caused by heating for a very short time at temperatures above the aging temperature. The precipitate reversion referred to in this paper is entirely distinct from "austenite reversion" often referred to in maraging steel literature. This latter phenomenon could more accurately be called the diffusion-controlled formation of austenite. Much has been written about reversion in several of the aluminum-base binary and ternary alloys.'2-16 Two explanations for reversion have been advanced. Based on the classical nucleation theory of Volmer-Weber-Becker-Doring,17 Konobeevski18 suggested that reversion was due to the size of the precipitate particles

A tecnologia de sensor-based sorting faz uso de sensores high-tech para pré-concentrar seletivamente partículas de minérios que tenham teores toleráveis para planta de beneficiamento, rejeitando as partículas que são totalmente estéreis ou rejeitos. A pré-concentração de carvão assistido pelo método Dual Energy X-Ray Transmition possibilita separar seletivamente o carvão com melhor quantidade de matéria orgânica das rochas silicáticas com maior densidade. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar a afinidade da tecnologia de sorting na pré-concentração do carvão mineral da Carbonífera do Cambuí/PR assistido por sensor de raios-x. Os testes foram realizados em dois lotes cujo range granulométrico foi -4”+2” e -2”+1”. A pré-concentração foi feita em 2 cortes de separação, o primeiro para retirar o rejeito e o segundo para obter 2 tipos de produtos. Os resultados indicaram que 52,15% da massa foi rejeitada, concentrando 47,85% do material de carvão na fração média -2”+1”. Na fração grossa -4”+2” foi rejeitado 62,51% da massa e concentrado 37,49% de carvão. As análises imediatas dos pré-concentrados mostraram que na fração grossa houve redução de 44,57% de cinzas totais e houve aumento de 4,59% para 8,29% de enxofre [S], enquanto na fração média a redução foi de 36,98% de cinzas totais e de 1,19 % [S].

The literature of explosives and blasting consists of a great variety of printed materials. These materials include technical papers, books, and articles by individuals and organizations; manufacturer’s product catalogs and brochures; handbooks offering guidance for the field blaster; complete encyclopedias on the subjects, and short entries in general-interest encyclopedias; government publications; proceedings of organizations devoted to the subjects; magazines specific to the subjects; articles in general circulation magazines; and other miscellaneous sources. In short, there is a multitude of literature on the subject, some well indexed for retrieval, but most not. This presentation will be a broad-brush look at some of the most important or interesting literature on the subject, since in no way can all the various references be mentioned, much less covered in depth. To illustrate the presentation, interesting materials from the author’s collection will be shown.

The summit of L_ihi submarine volcano changed dramatically after seismic activity beneath L_ihi during the month of August 1996. Bathymetric re-surveys of the L_ihi edifice using SeaBeam, Simrad and deep-towed Reson-Focus multibeam systems showed the presence of new north-south striking fissures, normal faults and a new pit crater located at the site of a former 300-meter high volcanic cone. Comparisons between the pre-1996 SeaBeam data and the new bathymetry show a net loss of about 100 million cubic meters of rock volume on the summit. This loss is localized at a new pit crater -- the 300-meter deep by 1,300-meter wide Pele's Pit. Submersible observations with Pisces V show the northern edge of Pele's Pit to be bounded by a normal fault located north of the site of the former Pele's Vents cone that has disappeared into the new pit crater. A new hydrothermal field, the Ikaika Vents, extending from a water depth of 1,311 meters to 1,287 meters has formed at the northeastern edge of the floor of Pele's Pit. Submersible observations of these new Ikaika Vents during September 1996 showed vigorous venting at the site with extensive white-colored bacterial mats hanging off the rock face above the vents. Follow-up mapping and sampling of the vent sites during August 1997 showed vent temperatures of up to 198°C, dense populations of vent shrimps around the vents and a centimeters-thick veneer of fine-grained polymetallic sulfide mineralization along the rock walls above individual vents. The mineralogy of the sulfides shows a barite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite composition.

Hydrogen gas at atmospheric pressure is shown to cause substantial embrittlement in a martettsitic high-stretzgth steel. Subcritical crack growth is observed at very lom stresses and with high growth rates. It is suggested that an adsorbed layer of hydrogen atoms at the crack-tip surface provides the damaging hydrogen. Oxygen in small quantity, as little as O.7 pct by volume, is shown to eliminate subcritical crack growth in gas environments caused by hydrogen or water vapor. However, dissolved oxygen in water has little or no influence upon crack-growth rates. Oxygen-stopped cracks may be restarted by water, or by hydvogen or water vapor if oxygen is removed from the environment. These observations are interpreted in terms of preferential adsorption of oxygen at the crack tip and the formation of an oxide barrier. RECENT investigations1-3 have demonstrated that environmental factors are frequently responsible for delayed failure in martensitic high-strength steels. The environment causes crack initiation from preexisting cracklike flaws at unexpectedly low stresses, often far below the uniaxial yield strength. The crack then propagates at a rate controlled by the environment and the crack-tip stress-field intensity; during this period crack propagation will cease if either the stress or the aggressive environment is removed, and this may be considered a definition of subcritical crack growth. Fracture occurs when the crack has grown to a critical length, such that the fracture toughness of the steel is exceeded. Several liquids are known to cause delayed failure, but water and water vapor are the most severely damaging of the environments investigated to date.'-3 It has been suggested that hydrogen produced during corrosion reactions may be the actual embrittling agent2 The severe embrittlement caused by water vapor inevitably raises the question as to whether other gas environments are damaging. Previous work4'5 has demonstrated that high-pressure hydrogen (2250 psi or greater) is an effective embrittling medium, as measured by such criteria as reduction in area, notch tensile strength, and time to failure. Moreover, the embrittlement was eliminated by the addition of small quantities of air or oxygen to the high-pressure hydrogen, but it was not influenced by additions of nitrogen or argon.4 In the present study attention is focused upon gas environments at atmospheric pressure, in particular hydrogen and oxygen. The influence of these constituents upon the initiation and growth of a crack from a pre-existing cracklike flaw in a high-strength steel was determined directly by the electric-potential method of monitoring crack growth. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The H-11 steel was supplied by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory as 3 by 12 by 0.065 in. sheet specimens with 1-in. transverse center slots. The slot tips were finished by Elox machining to a radius of 0.001 in. or less. The yield strength was 230,000 psi; chemical composition and heat-treatment schedule are given in Table I. The experimental apparatus, precracking procedure, and incremental loading sequence have been described previously.3 In the only significant change, precracking was sometimes carried out by a hydrogen embrittlement and baking technique. All experiments were conducted at room temperature; the hydrogen gas environment was purified by a commercial palladium purifier. Crack initiation and propagation were followed by the electric-potential method,'-3 using a calibration that has been recently dicussed. Stress-field intensities at the crack tip were computed by the conventional Irwin frmula; the plasticity correction was negligible and therefore not included. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A striking brittleness associated with molecular hydrogen at atmospheric pressure is demonstrated by the data in Table I1 and Fig. 1, which indicate that subcritical cracks in hydrogen initiate at lower stress-field intensities and propagate more rapidly than in fully humid argon. Ki and Kf are the crack-tip stress-field intensities at initiation and termination of subcritical crack growth, respectively. Termination, of course, corresponds to fracture. Borehole Mining (BHM) is a remotely operated underground and underwater method of extracting (mining) mineral resources by high-pressure water jets. It can be carried-out from the land surface, open pit floor, underground mine and floating platform or vessel. The method is currently in use in mining and exploration of such natural resources and industrial materials as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, gravel, coal, poly-metallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and several more. Yet another application of Borehole mining technology is construction of subsurface collectors, ground walls and storage for compressed or liquefied gases, oil and other products.

The new Bunker Hill slag-treatment plant, designed ior, a capacity of 300 to 400 tons of hot slag per day, was "blown in" April 5, 1943. In the ensuing I5-months period, 157,530 tons of slag was processed, with an average recovery of over go per cent of the zinc and practically all of the lead contained. In addition to this high metal recovery, utilization of the waste heat in the gas and fume venting, the process has enabled the generation of 231,376 tons of steam at 250-lb, gauge. Over the first six months opcration the volume of slag treated averaged somewhat under 300 tons per day. Reclaimed dump slag made up only about 1 5 per cent of the plant feed. In October 1943, preparations for the smelting of additional tonnages of dump slag were completed and the plant capacity was increased to an average of about 420 tons of slag per day. During the nine-months interval since that date, monthly averages of 450 toils per operating day have been maintained several times. The new plant (Fig. I) is constructed in close proximity to blast-furnace operations. The fuming furnace and other necessary equipment are housed in an eastward extension of the existing blast-furnace building. Beyond this housed extension the dust-laden gas is conveyed about the perimeter of a large rectangle formed by the flues, cooling towers and baghouses. The course of a 10-ft. balloon flue, which transports the fuming furnace gas, describes the west and south perimeters. This flue connects with a set of cooling towers located at the southeast comer. The flue and cooling-tower system serving the deleading kiln constitute the north side and the two baghouses, serving the kiln and furnace operations, -border the east side. From these baghouses the several discharge gas flows are come biped and conveyed in to the rectangle, being vented to atmosphere by means of a fan through a centrally located zoo-ft. brick stack. In general, the plant design and operation follow quite closely that dictated by experience gained in years of slag-fuming practice by the Anaconda Copper Mining Go., at East Helena, Mont., and the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd., at Trail, B.C., and more recently by the International Smelting and Refining Co. at Toocle, Utah. : Fuming operations at the East Helena and the Tooele plants are more or less identical. Trail practice differs chiefly in the methods employed for the storage of the hot feed slag and in the methods utilized for the handling and cooling of the fuming furnace gas. The new Bunker Hill fuming plant closely follows Trail procedure in the treatment of the furnace discharge gas while East Hclcna methods have been adopted for the storage of feed slag.
