The detection, recovery and disposal of commercial explosives and explosive waste has always carried a level of risk and requires specialized equipment and technical expertise. Improperly stored, discarded, deteriorated, misfired, stolen or surplus products are often the primary sources of explosives that require safe disposal. Detection and disposal tools available today have advanced significantly due to developments in Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) operations and commercial blasting technology. These technologies have provided safer more efficient ways to detect, investigate and dispose of commercial explosives products in order to minimize property damage and potential harm to disposal personnel and the general public.

In an article in the General Electric Review, January, 1915, reference was made to the X-ray examination of a steel casting 9/16 in thick. Fig. 1 shows one of the radiographs thus obtained. All these radiographs showed plainly the tool marks on the surface of the casting. All but one showed peculiar markings the shape of which strongly suggested that they were indeed the pictures of holes in the interior. A circular piece, 1 in. in diameter, was punched from the casting at a point where the radiograph shown in Fig. 1 indicated that a blow-hole should be found. (Location of sample shown by circle in Fig. l.) Fig. 2 is a photograph of the end of the punching, showing the hole that was found. Since that article was written it has seemed desirable: (1) to obtain data from which the exposure necessary for any thickness of steel could be at once calculated; (2) to find the thickness of the smallest air inclusion which could be radiographed in a given thickness of steel; (3) to determine in what direction to hope for further progress; and (4) to develop the technique of radiographing metals. In order to gain some preliminary data, several pieces of 1/2-in. (12.5-mm.) boiler plate were obtained, 5 by 7 in. (12.5 by 17.5 cm.) in size. In one of these, holes were drilled in such a way that the axis of each hole was midway between the faces of the steel and parallel to those faces. "Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide evidence for the formation of Cr(V) intermediates in the enzymatic reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R) in the presence of NADPH, indicating an initial single-electron transfer step in the reduction mechanism. Depending on the pH, at least two different Cr(V) species are generated which are relatively long-lived. In addition, we have detected the hydroxyl (·OH) radical formation during the GSSG-R catalyzed reduction of Cr(VI) by spin trapping, employing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) and a-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (4-POBN) as spin traps. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) causes only a minor effect on the ·OH radical and Cr(V) formation, indicating that the ~ - is not significantly involved in the reaction mechanism. Catalase enhances the Cr(V) formation and substantially inhibits the ·OH radical formation, indicating the involvement of hydrogen peroxide (H20 2) in the reaction mechanism. Addition of H20i suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the ·OH radical fonnation. Measurements involving N-ethylmaleimide show that the Cr(V) species, produced enzymatically by the reduction of Cr(VI) by GSSG-R, react with H2O2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might participate in the initiation of Cr(VI) carcinogenicity.INTRODUCTIONC(VI) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals [1-4) and to cause mutations in bacteria and transformation of mammalian cells [5-8). In contrast, most Cr(lll) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic [9, 10]. Cr(VI) and Cr(lll) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) ions are rapidly transported across cellular membranes [2, 11-13), while Cr(lll) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents [3]. Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(Vl) is required for its reaction with DNA [2], the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(VI) reduction have been the focus of studies during the past decade but the details are still not understood."

This paper uses a case study to demonstrate best practices techniques for predicting the contribution of gravity concentration in a gold recovery process flowsheet. The case study was selected as an example of an ore with a marginal gravity gold content, which makes the value of a gravity circuit difficult to quantify. In this instance the value of leveraging a significant knowledgebase of operating gravity circuit performance to support the decision making process was demonstrated. This case study analysis serves as a useful demonstration of best practice methodologies supporting decisions to include or exclude gravity recovery in a gold recovery process flowsheet.CITATION:Giblett, A and Afewu, K, 2015. Reserve Mining Co. produces 5 million tons of iron ore pellets per year. The finished product runs about 65.50 pct Fe, with 7.75 to 8.00 pct SiO2. Less than 12 pct arrives at the blast furnaces smaller than 3/8 in. This plant was originally designed to produce 3.75 tons annually-not 5 million. To handle the increased tonnage a fifth fine crushing line was added, and some very minor changes were made.

Low temperature and high-temperature calorimetric measurements were made by the Federal Bureau of Mines on high-purity samples of Re02(s) and Re03(s) to determine heat capacities and enthalpies. The temperature range of heat capacity measurements was 5 to 310 K for Re02 and 8 to 309 K for Re03. High-temperature enthalpy measurements alone were determined for pure Re207(s,1). The derived standard entropies are S°298 = 11.43±0.01 cal/deg mole for Re02(s) and S298 = 16.55±0.02 cal/deg mole for Re03(s). The growing availability of information and data analysis capabilities of recent years provides new opportunities for improving the performance of mining operations. By using real-time measurements and artificial intelligence, it is possible to respond faster to changing conditions, while accurate and timely information permits rapid evaluation of changes and fast business improvement decisions. This article presents a blueprint for alignment of systems, organizational design, and management practices to leverage these developments in performance-driven operations management in mining and mineral processing. The first component of the blueprint is a performance framework with a system of key performance indicators for production control that can be used across organizational levels. This system places improvement at the core of management activities, giving greater importance to improvement skills at lower organizational levels, so companies can leverage available information for improving operational control. Secondly, the blueprint defines an organizational structure that strengthens performance improvement with technological and change management capabilities. Finally, the blueprint proposes alignment of management practices, covering the optimization of short-interval controls, the application of an improvement project portfolio management system that determines the ownership of improvement projects, and the coordination of controls across the organization. This combination of systems, organizational design, and management alignment supports rapid decision-making at the right organizational level. Introduction of the presented blueprint for operations management enables mines to leverage the developments in information and analysis capabilities to improve the performance of operations.

Despite the ubiquity of applications for germanium, there is a lack of practically useful solubility data in acidic solutions. Previous studies were done at ambient temperature and only for commonly used acids (H2SO4, HCl). Hence, an investigation of the solubility of GeO2 in different acids was undertaken. Several inorganic and organic acids were studied in the concentration range of 1–11 mol/L and at 23, 40, and 60 °C. In the case of H2SO4 and HCl previous data was confirmed. Lower acidity resulted in a higher solubility for Ge at all tested temperatures. Tests done at 40 and 60 °C and low to moderate acidity levels, gave slightly increased solubility values at higher temperatures compared to 23 °C. This wasn’t the case at higher acidity levels, i.e., the solubility curves at different temperatures converge at high acidity. Lastly, a relationship of water activity and GeO2 solubility in different acid media was established.

SYNOPSIS Two pilot plants operating on different types of carbon were used to generate steady-state adsorption data in the treatment of gold-plant solutions of high and low tenor. A pilot plant comprising three 4 m long columns and using 3 mm extruded activated carbon was used to treat pregnant solutions with a gold concentration of 5 to 8 g/t at pH 10 to 11,5. Column influent was pumped at a super¬ficial flow velocity of 0,5 m/min while the carbon was moved daily so as to effect gold loadings on the carbon of 5 to 10 k /t. With a carbon-bed depth of 12 m, an adsorption efficiency of 99,9 per cent was obtained in a bed depth of 9 m, which was subsequently reduced to 8 m when the depth of the carbon bed was reduced to 8 m. This improvement in efficiency was attributed to the reduced residence time of the carbon from 12 to 8 days. A corresponding decrease in adsorbed silica indicated that some silica fouling of the carbon had occurred. A second pilot plant, comprising a single column 6 m in length and using coconut-shell carbon of 1,0 to 2,4 mm, treated a solution with a gold concentration of 0,7 g/t at pH 8,0. Feed solution was pumped at a superficial flow velocity of 1,0 m/min while carbon was moved every 8 hours to give gold loadings of more than 5 kg/t. An adsorp¬tion efficiency of 99,5 per cent was indicated at steady state. Intermittent washing of the column with dilute hydrochloric acid was shown to have a beneficial effect on the gold adsorption and to reduce the pressure drop across the column. Intermittent washing with dilute sulphuric acid indicated that there had been some passivation of the car¬bon during the treatment of a solution with a gold concentration of only 0,2 g/t. Compared with other adsorption systems, the countercurrent moving bed appears to offer significant advantages in terms of metallurgical efficiency and capital investment. The inability normally associated with moving-bed systems to treat solutions containing suspended solids may be overcome to a degree by the use of relatively coarse extrud¬ed carbon.

The effect of strain rate and temperature on the tensile flow stress of a polycrystalline bcc alloy of magnesium containing 14 wt pct Li and 1.5 wt pct Al was investigated for strain rates of 3.13 x lom5 to 3.13 x 10-3 per sec over the range from 20° to 300°K. From about 180° to 300°K the alloy exhibited an ather-ma1 deformation behavior where the flow stress was independent of strain rate and increased only slightly with decreasing temperature. At lower temperatures the flow stress was strongly strain-rate- and temperature-dependent, characteristic of deformations controlled by thermally activated mechmzisms. The activation volume for thermally activated plastic defornzation was between 5 and 30 cu Burgers vectors, independent of plastic strain. This low-temperature thermally activated deformation behavior was found lo be in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical dictates of the Dorn-Rajnak1 formulation of the Peierls mechanism where deformation is controlled by the rate of nucleation of pairs of dislocation kinks over the Peierls energy barriers. SEVERAL studies of the low-temperature thermally activated deformation of bcc metals and alloys (molybdenum,1 tantalum,1 Fe-2 pct Mn,2 Fe-11 pct MO,3 and AgMg4) have revealed that the strain rate is controlled by the activation of dislocations over the Peierls-Nabarro energy hills. Although there is some uncertainty as to the nature and effect of solute atom-dislocation interactions during low-temperature deformation of bcc metals, it has been concluded by Dorn and Rajnak,1 Conrad,1 and Christian and Masters6 among others that overcoming the Peierls-Nabarro stress which arises from the variations in bond energies of atoms in the dislocation core as it is displaced is the probable mechanism controlling low-temperature deformation. The purpose of this research was to investigate the low-temperature plastic deformation of the bcc alloy Mg-14 wt pct Li-1.5 wt pct A1 to determine if the behavior of this alkali metal alloy might be analogous to that for other bcc metals. This alloy was selected because of its availability and its current industrial importance as a lightweight material for aircraft and aerospace applications. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Polycrystalline tensile specimens having cylindrical gage sections 2 in. long by 0.2 in. in diam were machined from as-received alloy sheet stock of Mg-14 wt pct Li-1.5 wt pct Al. Specimens were annealed in an argon atmosphere at 423°K for 4 hr and maintained in a kerosene bath together with the sheet stock to prevent corrosion. The resulting specimen microstructure consisted of a coarse uniform dispersion of incoherent precipitate MgLi2Al particles7 in a bcc 0 phase matrix having an average grain size of 150 p. Prior to testing the specimens were chemically polished in dilute hydrochloric acid. Comparison of tensile properties and microstructures of specimens cut from center and edge sections of the sheet stock revealed no effects of inhomogeneities in the sheet material. Tensile tests were performed on an Instron machine at crosshead speeds corresponding to tensile strain rates of 1.56 x 10-5 and 1.56 x 10"3 per sec. Stresses were determined to ±2 x 106 dynes per sq cm and strains to within ±0.0001. Average values of shear stress t and shear strain y reported were taken as one half the tensile stress and three halves the tensile strain, respectively. Flow stresses were taken at 0.05 pct strain offset. Test temperatures down to 77°K were obtained by immersing the specimens in constant-temperature baths. Lower-temperature tests were performed in a liquid helium cryostat to within ±2°K of the reported values. Prior to testing at the various temperatures and strain rates all specimens were prestrained at 2 35°K at a shear strain rate of 3.13 x 10-5 per sec to a stress level of 0.606 x 10' dynes per sq cm to obtain a uniform initial state. Additional tests were made to determine the effect of changes in strain rate and strain on the flow stress by rapidly changing the crosshead motion during testing. Shear moduli of elasticity, needed for analyses of the data, were obtained at several temperatures by a common technique of determining the resonant frequencies of vibrations of rectangular test specimens. 11) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the experimentally determined flow stress vs temperature for two strain rates. Two distinct regions of behavior are evident. Below about 180°K the strong increase in flow stress with increased strain rate and decreasing temperature indicates that deformation is controlled by a thermally activated dislocation mechanism. At higher temperatures an athermal region is evident where the flow stress is independent of strain rate and only slightly dependent on temperature. The surface tension of zinc has been determined by the sessile-drop method in a progvam emphaszzing detailed experimental care. The surface tension oj. the pure metal was measured over a range of ternperature from the melting point (419.6"C) to 540°C. At the melting point, the suvface tension of zinc was found to be: 1) 99.99+ pct Zn - 757.0 5 dynes per cm 2) 99.999+ pct Zn - 761.0 5 dynes per CI 3) 99.9999 pct Zn - 76'7.5 5 dynes pev cna From experiments carried out in a closed, isothermal cell, the temperatuve coejyicient of the surface tension (6y/6T)p, , of zinc xas found not to be negative but to be postiue. A positive tenzperatre coefficient indicates a greater depee of order in the surface than in the body of the lquid. Houlezer, by delibevately inducing continuous zaporization, a temperature coefficient of su)face tension with a negative slope can be produced. The work reported herein was undertaken as part of a larger program of fundamental research on the properties of molten zinc and zinc alloys. This program grew out of a continuing interest at the Mines Branch in the behavior of liquid metals in the foundry and of a desire on the part of the zinc industry for reliable basic data. The work was originally begun in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd., Trail, B.C., and was subsequently continued from 1960 to date in association with the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. Although the surface tension of liquid zinc has of course, been measured before, as Table I and Fig. 1 demonstrate, there is not good agreement among the existing values. Such disparities arise because sources of experimental error are insufficiently controlled. This situation places the reader in doubt. One result may be correct within narrow limits—even fortuitously—yet, because there is not agreement between several values, none can be accepted with conviction and all become suspect. It seemed, therefore, in the circumstances, that there was room for further work embodying considerable emphasis on experimental care in order that, within a small margin of error, an accurate value might be obtained. Weak rock mass and poor flow of material can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving. This paper proposes a method to establish design parameters for an inclined deposit within a weak rock mass and evaluates its effectiveness through a case study. In order to solve the problem of low production capacity and poor safety conditions of sublevel caving mining at the Yingfangzi silver mine in China and to ensure a smooth production from the refractory ore body, it is necessary to select appropriate stope structure parameters. Based on random medium theory of gravity flow and the improved equation of ore discharge in random medium, an end wall drawing experiment is carried out to determine the optimum design and flow parameters. It was observed from the experiment that, due to the influence of the randomness of particle movement, there is a mismatch in the flow parameter measurement. The flow characteristics and distribution of the marker particles are different from that of the tested particles resulting in large drawbody shape distortion. The study finds that the flow parameters obtained by the new method are more practical and account for drawpoint width and recommends that the new method for determining the sublevel stope height is used when the drawbody is a non-standard ellipsoid. The outcomes have shown a significant reduction in the dilution and improvement in the recovery rates, and the safety and efficiency of mining have been greatly improved.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

"Although the first large-scale application of copper recovery by solvent extraction (SX) took place in Zambia in the early 1970s, it is only in the last decade that this technology has become widely employed in this part of the world and is now a mainstay unit operation in most copper hydrometallurgical flowsheets. The mineralogy of the ores in the African Copper Belt, and hence the characteristics of the African leach liquors, differ significantly from those in Chile and the south-western USA, where copper SX has had a long and successful history. These differences provide operators, metallurgists, reagent vendors and engineers with many challenges: new approaches are needed to adapt this technology for successful implementation in this region. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by these flowsheets. INTRODUCTION Following the success of the Rancher’s Bluebird and Bagdad solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW) operations in Arizona in the late 1960s, the Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola, Zambia became the first large-scale copper SX plant in the world, commissioned in 1974. Despite the equipment design now being outdated, this plant still continues to operate successfully, indicating the versatility and adaptability of this technology. Today, there are some 75 copper SX operations worldwide with cathode production above 10 kt/a. The top ten producers currently account for some 40% of the global 4.3 Mt/a SX–EW copper production. South America (predominantly Chile and Peru) is the largest copper cathode-producing region, with annual production of some 2 Mt. The Central African Copper Belt (Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) is second, with cathode production of 1.2 Mt/a and North America (USA and Mexico) third, producing close to 0.8 Mt/a Cu (Cytec data, 2014). The remaining 0.35 Mt/a comes from all other regions combined (referred to as “Rest-of-World”). Current and future operations in Zambia and the DRC are summarised in Figure 1. The industry in this region is characterised by a large number of small (3 to 20 kt/a) plants, mainly Chinese-owned, and a few very large (>200 kt/a) operations, owned by major multinational corporations. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses the differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges presented by the conditions, as well as innovations in flowsheets, reagents and operating conditions that have been introduced in these circuits."

For several years barite (BaSO4) production has topped such better known minerals as feldspar and fluorspar in annual tonnage and is now well established among our foremost nonmetallic industries. Description Of widespread occurrence in the United States, barite is relatively soft (hardness, 2.5 to 3.5), inert, heavy (specific gravity, 4.5), and is also called "barytes" (sometimes pronounced "bear-i-tease"), "heavy spar" and "tiff." It occurs with granular and earthy structure but usually has coarse, orthorhombic crystallization. It is commonly white, and although occurring in various shades of red, yellow, and gray, barite always gives a white streak and can be scratched by the ordinary prospecting pick. Its softness and weight are usually sufficient to establish field identification. Another aid is the "rotten egg" odor of H2S which sometimes emanates from freshly fractured surfaces. Barite can be readily distinguished from two other minerals which have somewhat similar occurrences and characteristics. The relatively rare celestite, strontium sulphate, has a specific gravity slightly less than 4.00 and gives a distinctively crimson color in a flame test. The very rare wither-ite, barium carbonate, has a specific gravity of 4.3 but readily effervesces with dilute hydrochloric acid. Occurrence All known commercially important barite deposits in the United States occur as re- placements or cavity fillings in schists, shales, limestones, dolomites, and quart-zites, or as residual deposits from such formations. In Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Missouri, high-grade barite is recovered as fragments from residual clays covering quartzites and dolomites. In Arkansas, Nevada, and California, barite, usually of lower grade, is mined from replacement deposits. These seven states contributed the entire production reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines for 1945 as given in Table I. Such a large part of this undistributed production came from California that that state probably outranked both Nevada and Tennessee. For the second consecutive year Arkansas was the leading producing state, particularly worthy of note because there was no commercial production of barite there prior to 1941 and because the entire production of Arkansas has come from one large deposit which is being operated by two companies. The reduction of Mn3O4 to MnO has been investigated in a thermobalance apparatus, The charge was composed of manganese ore (decomposed by heating/calcination or pre-reduction to mainly Mn3O4) and coke. The material was charged to a crucible, which was suspended in the balance. CO-gas was distributed through a grid in the bottom of the crucible. Two sizes of ores were used; 2.4-4.8 mm and 6,7-9.5 mm. Coke particles were in the size range 4.8-6.7 mm. Experiments were conducted in the 900-1100°C temperature range. The composition of the product gas was monitored continuously. External mass transport between bulk gas and particle surface does not seem to limit the rate of reduction. Assuming that both diffusion through product layer and chemical reaction at the interface between MnO and Mn)04 are rate controlling, the data was tried both in a shrinking core model and in a grain model using regression. The grain model gives the best physical description of the process, because the reactant is in fact a porous medium. With this model the effective diffusivity was calculated to be in the 1.5-6.10.5 m2/s range. The pore size was mainly between 0.1 and 10 um,

A fundamental study of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture pattern is presented for the dynamic penetration of a conical bit into coal block. In this paper, damaged zones during crater formation and fragment size distribution were studied. Bit with a sharper tip angle and a smooth body configuration performed better penetration. Results suggest that in coal cutting the trend should be toward the face cleat direction using a sharper angled tip bits which consumes less energy for an optimum range of penetration depths, thus attaining maximum cutting efficiency and reducing fine fragments.
