Consolidation Coal Co. (Consol) supports an active research and development effort to improve the safe, productive mining of coal and to use coal in an environmentally acceptable manner: Attention will be focused on degasification of coal seams, continuous coal transport systems, earth sciences activities, and coal combustion. Brief mention will be made regarding the SO2 emissions control programs. The research program constitutes about 1 % of Consol coal sales, which positions Consol as the preeminent coal company supporting broad-based research addressing the full spectrum of the various problems associated with using the nation's abundant reserves of economical, readily available fuel.

The mine fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. The seals in conjunction with pressure balancing the seals around the perimeter of the fire area resulted -in the control of the mine fire.

Integrated mining information and process control systems can reduce information delays, enhance decision making and improve the responsiveness of mining operations to, for example, variations in market conditions, mineral grades and ground conditions. This paper examines developments in the areas of: monitoring, data analysis and diagnosis,' communications systems; integrated mining support system;, and process and machine control. It concludes that the development of a comprehensive information technology plan is fundamental to the phased implementation of these technologies. In addition, hardware and software standards and concurrent digital design and simulation practices in selected manufacturing industries are examined and concluded to have relevance to the mining industry. Integrated information and process control systems will lead to emergence of the "digital mine". Such advances in mining information infrastructure as well as mining equipment will enable mining operations to shift from mass production methods to leaner production techniques. "Lean mining" aims to enhance and accelerate cash flow over the life of a mine by focusing on reduction of' throughput times; stockpiles for volume and quality control; and wastage and rework.

The mine environment is dynamic and operating conditions change continually and are difficult to predict. New equipment, variable geological conditions, modified layouts, and different equipment operators make monitoring and control system difficult to apply without continual software maintenance. The paper reports on algorithms that were developed, encoded with Knowledge Craft Tools, and tested on underground coal mine data to adapt to the dynamic environment. The system receives data from sensors in near real time and then identifies patterns in the data. Using a set of mode features the data is automatically checked to determine the present operating mode. When the operating mode changes from the previous shifts, the system automatically learns the new mode characteristics and uses that mode context for further data analysis. The concepts presented in this paper are applicable to a wide variety of mining scenarios, not just underground coal mining.

Flyash from municipal solid waste incinerators containing roughly 13 to 15% Zn, 2% Pb and 0.2% Cd is an attractive material for simultaneous metal recovery and detoxification. Results have shown that Pb in flyash is present as PbSO4 and PbC12 and that about 70% of the Zn is present in the form of soluble amorphous compounds. Leaching results in a number of acid and basic lixiviants show that acid leaching is clearly more effective than basic leaching which is limited by low solubility of Cd and Zn. Cementation in acid solution with pH < 1 promotes redissolution of the precipitated metal. Successful zinc electrowinning from chloride leaching solutions has also been demonstrated, although Pb2+ and Na+ can be potentially detrimental. The presence of Pb2+ can prevent deposition of metallic Zn, forming zinc oxychloride, ZnC12.4Zn(OH)2, instead. High concentrations of Na+ can also result in precipitation of NaCl. This investigation has shown that hydrometallurgical treatment of MSW flyash through leaching, cementation and electrowinning is a potentially feasible method for simultaneous detoxification and recovery of metal values. Several issues have also been identified which would require further investigation for final process development.

G. GREGORY BRYAN 33.1-DEFINITIONS 1. Engineering-Engineering may be defined simply as the science and art of making materials and energy serve the purposes of mankind. There are many fields of engineering, each with specialized branches. The basic fields are: civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical. Others may be specialized phases of one of these or a combination of two or more of them. Mining engineering, for example, requires a working knowledge of construction, mechanics, electricity, metallurgy, geology, accounting and economics, in addition to mining techniques or methods. Mining geology and geological engineering involve rocks and their structure and the forces that act upon them, and chemistry, physics and mechanics also are important to practitioners in these fields. Metallurgical engineering requires chemistry and physics but also a working knowledge of mechanics and electricity. The fields of engineering with which this section are concerned are those primarily involved in the finding, mining, processing and utilization of the natural mineral resources of the earth. They include geology, mining engineering and metallurgy, each with several specialized subdivisions. 2. The Engineer-The engineer is an individual who has had specialized training to qualify him to practice the profession of engineering. The term engineer is used here in its broadest sense to include such professions as certain applied branches of geology, physics and chemistry, whose practitioners may not have acquired engineering degrees but who, nevertheless, by training and experience in some area of the minerals industry, qualify under the above definition. To become a successful engineer, a person should have certain pronounced aptitudes and preferences, even before embarking upon the requisite course of training. Among the chief qualifications that the engineer-to-he must possess are: (a) a natural inclination toward mathematics and the physical sciences, and (b) intellectual and moral honesty. Among the qualities the student engineer must develop are: (a) independence of thought, open-mindedness, sound judgment and the ability to observe, deduce, plan and apply solutions, (b) the ability to articulate and convince, and (c) the ability to organize and direct the activity of others. These qualities are normally developed through sound education, followed by pro¬gressive experience. 3. The Consulting Engineer-The consulting engineer is an engineer primarily in the business of furnishing specialized advice and engineering services on an intermit¬tent, part-time or occasional basis to clients who do not have continuous or full-time need for those services. He must be able to make and take full responsibility for decisions and recom¬mendations where original thought is required. He should not be confused with the engineer, surveyor or technician who also may furnish services on an intermittent basis, such as regular periodic surveys, the overseeing of drilling programs and other such routine work as may require little original thought and planning. 33.2-THE PROFESSION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERING 33.2.1- QUALITIES REQUIRED A successful consulting engineer must first have, as a minimum, the qualities and preparation of an engineer. This paper compares the covariance and multiquadric functions in some mining and geological applications. The basic principals of the two techniques are covered briefly. Similarities and dissimilarities of the covariance and multiquadric functions are discussed geometrically, mathematically and practically. A 14 km2 x 16 km2 area in Baharia Oasis, Western Desert of Egypt, was selected for a detailed comparative test. The gravity anomalies of 48 test stations were computed by using the data of 63 control stations. The results indicated that the covariance function is quite better than the multiquadric one. On the other hand, the multiquadric function is simpler in computation than the covariance, which requires precalculations such as semivariogram and covariogram. Moreover, multiquadric equations are based on geometric and physical considerations rather than covariance functions.

INTRODUCTION The Crow Butte uranium deposit is located in northwest Nebraska near the town of Crawford (Figure 1). The deposit was discovered during the fall of 1980 by Wyoming Fuel Company, operator of the Crow Butte Joint Venture. The Crow Butte Joint Venture is owned 50 percent by Wyoming Fuel Company, a subsidiary of KN Energy, Inc.; formerly Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company, Inc., 40 percent by Ferret Exploration Company, Inc., and 10 percent by First Exploration Company. A preliminary announcement made in January 1981 indicated a "probable potential" reserve in excess of 25,000, 000 pounds U303. Drilling during 1981 and 1982 confirmed these reserves and indicated the presence of more than 30,000,000 pounds U308 having an average grade in excess of 0.25 percent U308. Wyoming Fuel Company was initially attracted to the area in 1978 by favorable regional geology for sandstone uranium deposits and weak radioactivity noted in regional oil and gas holes. Exploration drilling began in 1979 following the formation of the Crow 3utte Joint Venture. Drilling has continued up to the present, at which time the Joint Venture is ready to proceed with a pilot scale solution mine. Environmental baseline data have been acquired and the permit applications for the pilot scale mine have been submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and to the applicable state agencies in Nebraska.

Analyses of trace elements in bulk ores and in chalcopyrite and other ore minerals from porphyry copper systems worldwide, including skarns and breccia pipes, reveal some key factors regarding byproduct critical elements. Petrographic and scanning electron microscope analyses combined with a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique developed by the USGS on selected ores from the Mackay-Stanford Ore Deposits Collection suggest that selenium occurs as atomic substitutions in sulfides, particularly pyrrhotite (up to 430 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 300 ppm Se); tellurium occurs predominantly as less-than-five-micron-sized inclusions of bismuth-tellurium minerals in other ore minerals, particularly chalcopyrite; cobalt and nickel are locally enriched in pyrite (up to 7800 ppm Co and 9100 ppm Ni); gallium is locally enriched in magnetite (up to 83 ppm Ga); indium and silver are locally enriched in chalcopyrite (up to 890 ppm In and 770 ppm Ag); cadmium substitutes for zinc, particularly in sphalerite (up to 4100 ppm Cd). There is considerable variation, both between and within individual deposits, in both selenium and tellurium content in these copper ores, ranging from 0.6 to 148 ppm Se and 0.09 to 64 ppm Te. Indium tends to be high in copper ores that are also enriched in silver. At current prices, many of these elements are sufficiently enriched to warrant investigation into metallurgical recovery as byproducts of the major elements.

The fracture process which inevitably occurs in rock around an underground structure is an energy release phenomenon. The development of fractures and associated displacements around a structure may therefore be more logically described using strain energy concepts and design may sensibly be based on serviceability limit states.

Large-diameter autogenous and semiautogenous grinding mills represent the primary thrust of the expanding grinding technology. In spite of initial difficulties, large autogenous and semiautogenous mills have reached an acceptable level of technology that provides the mineral engineer with a reliable, low cost means of ore comminution. A successful milling installation begins during the design stage of the grinding mill and the plant in which it is to be installed. This is particularly true in autogenous and semiautogenous mills. Critical mill and plant design factors should be considered while the mill and installation are still only "paper." Various current liner designs will be discussed ranging from lifter bar/plate to integral types. Modes of operation such as "high-low" will be considered. Liner maintenance procedures ranging from laydown area in plant design, proper mill shutdown methods, to installation and bolt tightening complete the equation to yield optimum performance possible for any particular grinding application. The objective of this paper is to discuss trends in wear materials, designs, and operating practices, and to provide some guidelines for good practice as we move through the 1980s. We will put together concepts that relate to the designs, materials, and applications so that higher performance can be obtained by the operator for his specific application. The concepts are shown as being in series became they are dependent on each other to achieve the desired performance: designs times materials times application results in higher performance (Arnson, Parks, and Kjos, 1983).

Blasting is the main method of production in many non-coal underground mining operations and produces multiple toxic gases as a result. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires mine operators to measure the level of toxic gases in mines as frequently as necessary to ensure they are below regulatory safety limits. The current practice uses portable gas monitors to check the concentrations of toxic gases after a fixed post-blast time. This paper studies the application of a gas monitoring system in the return entry of a limestone mine to determine a safe re-entry time. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted such a monitoring program in a limestone mine from September 2016 through May 2018. NIOSH/PMRD (Pittsburgh Mining Research Division) is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions. This study showed that the use of gas monitoring in the return air can be a useful tool at the mine operator’s disposal to detect and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions and also to reliably estimate the re-entry time.

Low metal prices and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, coupled with the threat of higher governmental royalties are adversely affecting both existing and new operations. Existing operations must therefore be run at maximum operating efficiencies to enable mining companies to survive and grow. Well planned and executed "outsider" reviews can help achieve this goal. Many mine managers and those who direct them resist the idea of "outsider" reviews for a variety of reasons, some valid and some not. Those managers who do bring in the "outsiders" are nearly unanimous in reporting that the exercise in self-discipline was well worth the pain and effort and repaid the cost many times over. This paper makes a strong case for "outsider" reviews and gives recommendations on the kinds of reviews to undertake. The authors draw upon their nearly 70 years combined experience, much of which has been in operations.

For the past 30 years, process flowsheet design has been accomplished largely through modeling and simulation. This approach provides circuit designers the freedom to test various separation approaches while minimizing physical and human resource requirements. The Limn® software provides a unique approach to process simulation, through a Microsoft Excel interface. While the software comes with standard process models for numerous unit operations, the Excel calculation environment and the accompanying VBA platform provide a convenient interface for custom model integration, even for non-experienced programmers. This feature is especially useful for university students in introductory process modeling and simulation-assisted flowsheet design courses as well as experienced practitioners with proprietary process models. This paper shows how the Limn® software may be used to solve basic process engineering problems as well as more comprehensive circuit design challenges. Industrial examples as well as opportunities for training and education are presented.

The Automated Minerals Information System (AMIS) is an integrated data base system being developed to support the Bureau of Mines minerals information collection and analysis activities. The system facilitates cross-referencing and integration of domestic and foreign information from a variety of sources. The AMIS provides a central source of minerals information that is versatile and responsive to the needs of problem and policy analysts as well as supporting the needs of those involved in data collection and interpretation. As the AMIS becomes fully implemented, it will become an important tool in forecasting and assessing the impact of policy decisions that affect the supply and demand for minerals. The Bureau of Mines has long been the Federal Government&apos;s principal source of worldwide information on non-fuel minerals. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of mineral problems and policies as they affect the world&apos;s nonfuel mineral resources. To facilitate timely and accurate analysis, comprehensive data on 87 commodities are collected by various Bureau programs. Minerals information is made available through a number of periodic publications including the annual Minerals Yearbook and monthly Mineral Industry Surveys. These data collection and analysis activities have traditionally been supported by over 200 separate information processing systems. The Bureau of Mines has begun to implement a broad information strategy to provide a better response to the mineral problems and issues of the 1980&apos;s. The cornerstone of the Bureau of Mines information strategy is the development of the Automated Minerals Information System. When fully operational, we believe that the AMIS will provide the Bureau of Mines with the most comprehensive source of minerals information available anywhere in the world.

It focuses on the early assessment and prediction of metallurgical performance, the identi fication of gold recovery problems and the application of mineralogy in process optimization. The results of extensive operations support work emphasize the benefits of routine plant mineralogy. The design of comminution circuits and the evaluation of alternatives should be based on state-of-the-art equipment and appropriate design criteria - considerations that are often neglected by today&apos;s designers. This paper critically reviews common circuit designs, evaluates various alternatives for difficult-to-treat ores, and discusses the factors that should be considered when developing new plant designs or auditing existing plant performance. Data obtained from laboratory, pilot and plant-scale test work on a wide range of ores and circuits are used to justify the author&apos;s conclusions.

The Mississippian Salem Limestone, from which dimension stone is quarried in Indiana, is principally a calcarenitic rock formed of fossil bryozoans, echinoderms, and specimens of Endothyra. Numerical associations of the fossils, binding materials, oölitically coated fossils, and voids were determined by counting points on the surfaces of 278 thin sections of the limestone. Median sizes, coefficients of sorting, and skewness numbers were computed from measurements made of constituents in these thin sections. Many other samples and numerous exposures of the Salem and contiguous parts of adjacent formations also were studied. The organisms that furnished the skeletal material for formation of the Salem Limestone were chiefly gregarious and communal. Salem rocks are formed of nearly whole skeletons, of dismembered or slightly damaged skeletons, and of skeletons thoroughly ground up, because currents in the Salem sea varied in their ability to move and damage these materials. Locally the sediments are of uniform grain size because of sorting by currents and because related organisms grew to similar sizes. Rocks of the formation contain different proportions of the fauna both because the animals lived in these proportions and because their skeletons were mixed together by currents. The proportional relationships between members of the fauna were constant locally and for short periods of time. Study and mapping of the faunal associations, numbers of oölitically coated fossils, bedding structures, and size parameters enables geologists to suggest sedimentologic histories and sequences in areas of various sizes. Interpretations based upon such areal studies are necessary for evaluation of the dimension-stone potential within the Salem Limestone.

The primary objective of most comminution operations is liberation; however, mill performance is generally quantified in terms of particle size. Only recently has the use of image analysis equipment made it possible to quantify mill performance on the basis of liberation. In this investigation, a series of tests were carried out to study the effect of mill operating parameters on the liberation of sphalerite from a sphalerite/dolomite ore. The parameters studied included mill rotational speed, mill loading and ball size. The results of this work appear to indicate that sphalerite liberation is improved under conditions that promote impact breakage, while dolomite breakage is enhanced under attrition conditions.

Versatile living organisms, historically exploited as functionaries in the food processing, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, have not been successful in achieving similar or significant acceptance within the minerals industry. The current biotechnical revolution coupled with its expanded understanding, dictate that a flagging minerals industry reconsider the use of biotechnology in metallurgical applications. Living resources, either singly, in commensal association or in complex communities, are capable of duplicating fully integrated and complex processing functions. Organisms can mine and extract metals, detoxify chemical effluents and synthetically produce compounds. They have been criticized as exhibiting poor kinetics, excessive energy consumption and environmental sensitivity. However, expanding knowledge reveals that these organisms are surprisingly adaptable, variable and extremely durable. Applied biotechnology in specific cases offers favorable economic returns, environmental benefits and aesthetic value. Selective implementation of living systems can offer opportunities for reduced labor, increased productivity and technological advance. Success will not come easily. Capital must be risked, controversial decisions made and new ground plowed. Traditional, specialist thinkers will of necessity give way to interdisciplinary expertise and unorthodox methodology if success is to be achieved. Those who vigorously persevere, however, are likely to be rewarded with a dynamic and profitable new role in a restructured minerals industry.
