Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

Results of investigations over approximately the last 10 years by the Bureau of Mines and others on technology for recovering cell-grade alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, dawsonitic oil shale, coal ash, and coal shale are reviewed. It is concluded that, although many innovative techniques have evolved from this effort and have been shown to be technically feasible, energy and economic considerations will prevent any of the processes from competing with the Bayer process under normal conditions. Based on the Bureau's experience, some variation of clay-HCI leaching, HC1 gas sparging crystallization has the greatest potential as an alternative to the Bayer-bauxite process.

A metallurgical/flux is a substance that is added to combine with gangue (unwanted minerals) during ore smelting, with impurities in a molten metal, or with other additives in metal refining processes to form a slag that can be separated from the metal. Because slags are immiscible with the metallic melt and are of lower density, a separation of the slag and metal occurs if the viscosity and surface tension are of the proper values. The chemistries of slags are adjusted to provide the proper melting point, viscosity, surface tension, conductivity, specific heat, density, or chemical properties to effect the desired task. In addition to absorbing impurities from the metal, the purposes of the slag are to thermally insulate the metal bath, protect the molten metal from the atmosphere, and control the chemical potential of the system. Several excellent references on slags and metallurgical fluxes are available (Boynton, 1980, Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985, Turkdogan, 1983, Rosenqvist, 1974, Fine and Gaskell, 1984). The function of the slag might vary at different stages within a process prior to final melting. For example, the slag composition and behavior will change as materials descend in the iron blast furnace, or as they melt in the early stages of formation of steel- making slags. Selection of the chemistry for a slag might be influenced by factors outside the primary function as when blast furnace slags are used to make cement, rock wool insulation, or fertilizer supplements. Sometimes slags contain a sufficient amount of valuable recoverable elements to be sold as raw materials for other processes. Fluxes are often referred to as acid, basic, or neutral. Acid fluxes are those that generally form acids in water and bases are those that would generally form bases in water. Typical acid fluxes are silica, alumina, and phosphorus, although alumina can function as either an acid or base. Typical basic fluxes are lime and magnesia. Fluorspar, or calcium fluoride, is a neutral substance because it can be viewed as the reaction product of a base and an acid. The degree of acidity (ratio of acids to bases) or basicity (ratio of bases to acids) is often specified to characterize the slag chemistry for a particular system. The system might also be referred to as acid or basic depending on the choice of slag, for example, basic steelmaking uses slags with more bases (lime and magnesia) than acids (silica and alumina). Many forms of minerals and compounds have been used as fluxes depending on the process requirements, availability, costs, requirements for recycling of intermediate products, and environmental concerns. Because slags are most often mixtures of oxides and silicates, fluxes are usually oxides, carbonates (which decompose to oxides) and silicates. Slags comprising phosphates, borates, sulfides, carbides, or halides have also been used (Rosenqvist, 1974, Moore, 1981, Szekely et al., 1989). In ironmaking and steelmaking, some acidic components are sometimes added. In nonferrous processes slags and fluxes are acidic with silica as the primary component, and although the use of basic flux such as limestone or lime is not extensive, some amount is used to modify slag properties and some refining slags are lime based. The production of iron is accomplished by smelting of ores, pellets, and sinter in blast furnaces with subsequent refining of molten iron and scrap in oxygen-blown processes. The electric furnace is used to make steel, stainless steels, ferroalloys, and special alloys, whereas ferromanganese is often made in blast furnaces. Fluxes are used in all of these processes, and either limestone or lime is the major flux component with some dolomite, dolomitic lime, silica, alumina, and fluorspar being used. In ironmaking, the flux is added either by direct charging or through sinter and fluxed pellets. In steel refining by the basic oxygen process, flux is added as lime and dolomitic lime that are either charged as lumps or injected as fines. Some small amount of limestone is sometimes used. Fluorspar is often added as lumps or mixed with other fine materials in briquettes. Alumina is sometimes added to blast furnaces either by direct charging of sized lumps or through sinter. Typical acid fluxes are sand, gravel, quartz rock, used silica brick, or raw siliceous ore (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Olivine, which is a magnesium-silicate mineral, has been added to iron blast furnaces to enhance removal of alkalis (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Alumina in the form of bauxite, aluminiferous clay, and recycled alumina brick has been used as flux. Alumina can function amphoterically as either an acid or base, for example it can form aluminum silicate in high silica slags or calcium aluminate in lime-bearing slags (Lankford, Jr., et al., 1985). Limestone (calcium carbonate) and dolomite (magnesium-calcium carbonate), or fluxstones as they are sometimes called (Boynton, 1980), and their calcined forms, lime and dolomitic lime are the major basic fluxes. In the latter cases, the carbonates are de- composed in a kiln-type process to drive off carbon dioxide that might otherwise interfere with the subsequent smelting or refining process or require expensive forms of energy to effect the decomposition (e.g., by combustion of coke in the iron blast furnace). Limestone is considerably less expensive than lime because it is not calcined; however, lime is far more difficult to handle and reacts readily with water. Dolomite and dolomitic lime are used for their magnesia content. Fluorspar is a neutral flux often used as an additive in steel- making slags to improve fluidity, but it has also been used in combination with lime as a primary slag in electroslag refining (Duckworth and Hoyle, 1969). In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. To evaluate the effects on groundwater of a proposed in-pit disposal operation at an east Texas lignite mine, the local geologic, hydrogeologic, and geochemical features were thoroughly characterized. Resultant data were used in a flow and transport model (SWIFT) to simulate migration of the ash leachate. Computer simulations indicate that the leachate plume will travel 61-152 meters from the disposal area in 100 years after resaturation of the spoils. A 61-meter buffer zone of mine spoils without ash will surround the disposal area. The proposed landfill operation received regulatory approval and is currently operating as a Class 2 non-hazardous landfill.

The scrutiny given to model predictions of pit-lake water quality has focused attention on the uncertainty associated with long-term predictions. Although comparison of probabilistic predictive modeling of water quality in existing pit lakes indicates that short-term predictions can bracket most parameters, uncertainties in wall-rock reactions and the stability of groundwater composition and climate remain unquantified. This overview of the uncertainties associated with longer-term predictions is presented as support for those considering policy decisions that must be made in the absence of reliable estimates of future conditions.

Chemical zoning studies of mineralization can be useful in guiding exploration efforts. They permit one to determine the limits of mineralization and to correlate mineralized intervals in drill holes. Fahlore minerals are well suited for zoning studies because they are common minerals found in a variety of deposits, exhibit chemical diversity, and record the chemical evolution of migrating hydrothermal fluids. Zoning information in the form of metal ratios preserved in fahlore minerals was used to determine ore body limits in the Orcopampa precious metal system, Peru, and to correlate between multiple ore horizons in a sediment hosted massive sulfide (SHMS) currently under investigation. The current generations of electron microprobes provide the most efficient, accurate and economic way to analyze the tens to hundreds of sample required to successfully describe and use zoning information at the mine scale.

The interaction of soluble salt particles in their saturated brines is of interest from both a fundamental and practical perspective. The state of dispersion/aggregation of alkali halide particles as determined by optical microscopy can now be described based on non-equilibrium electrokinetic measurements for alkali halides. These results indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. These experimental results can be explained based on the interfacial polar interaction theory. In this regard the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems.

CYCLING WITH CEMENT "THE WHEEL IS COME FULL CIRCLE" Shakespeare's King Lear Act V, Scene 3, Line 176 The time clock of the cement industry has been turned back to the early 1950s. After the trials and tribulations of the decade of the Sixties, the hands now stand where they did just over twenty years ago. Cement shipments have steadily increased, with a record 419 million barrel level (78.8 million tons) being reached last year. Plants are operating at average utilization rates in excess of 85 percent of rated capacity. The spread between supply and demand has narrowed to where a definite shortage of cement now exists within the industry. The notable and unfortunate difference between the two periods however is that, back then, cement's returns were a respectable 14 to 18 percent, whereas today they stand at less than half those levels. Insufficient return forms the present foundation of the U.S. cement industry. This lack is destined to have a cumulative effect. Just as the industry's balance between supply and demand is returning to favorable proportions, promising a period that has historically and now should generate those profit levels required to modernize and provide for capacity addition, cement instead finds itself frozen by federal price controls into the semi-depressed condition that has existed for over a decade and from which it was just starting to emerge. Capital is not attracted to continued low returns, and increasingly restrictive pollution control measures are necessitating great non-productive expenditures be made as definite costs to stay in business. Even a clouded crystal ball would reveal that additional cement plant closings can be expected.

The large jointed chalk reservoir situated at 3 km depth in the North sea's Ekofisk field is undergoing major compaction after nearly 15 year of oil and gas production. Approximately 150 km 3 of the overlying sediments, mostly shales, are involved in the subsidence. A maximum central subsidence of nearly 3 meters, and a maximum present rate of 45 cm per year has set in motion numerous studies of the phenomenon. Non-linear finite element (FEM) and non- linear distict element (DEM) analyses of the compaction and large scale subsidence were performed. Consistent differences between the continuum and discontinuum analyses were noted. In the latter, slip on hypothetical bedding planes and sub- vertical or vertical faults was allowed, which possibly gives a more realistic simulation of the real processes of subsidence in such a large body of rock. Laboratory studies of the reservoir joints included roughness measurement, JRC and JCS characterization, direct shear tests while saturated in heated Ekofisk oil, and coupled closure-shear-flow tests with heated oil followed by heated sea water. Discontinuum modelling using Cundall's UDEC was performed on representative jointed assemblies (two sets of steeply dipping conjugate joints) to investigate the effect of a major reduction of pore pressure within the deformable matrix and along each joint. It was found that the large shrinkage deformation of the matrix allowed joint shearing to occur despite the constraint of uniaxial strain. Relative mass bulking due to small but widely distributed joint shear possibly explains the observed maintenance of excellent productivity despite large vertical strains in the reservoir.

Under sponsorship of the USBM and later of the DOE, a new type of rotary rock drill has been developed by The Bendix Corporation. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. This drill allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. The paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal mining, metal/nonmetal mining, and for general civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

Division Andina has considered in its long range planning, the exploitation by panel caving method of "Third Panel" mine, which was started its production stage during the second half of 1995. This mine has two production levels, the first is grizzly level and another is L.H.D. level. Both sectors use the same haulage level where mineral is recollected through ore pass. For mineral loading and haulage its use 50ton diesel trucks combined with electro-hydraulic chutes. The automation has permitted what this operation is carrying out with remote control by driver's truck, in concordance to short range planning.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

The by-product molybdenite technology in Chile is reviewed. Flowsheets, reagents and some operation features for the actual six Chilean moly plants(Chuquicamata, El Teniente, El Salvador, Andina, Las Tortolas and Pelambres), are presented. The chemical and physicochemical factors involved in the depression of copper and iron sulfides during the selective flotation of molybdenite, with sodium sulfide, sodium sulfhydrate, anamol-D and LR-744, are discussed. Advances in technology to solve problems of excess of lime (precipitation with sulfuric acid); excess of residual flotation reagents (activated carbon and kerosene); and optimization of depressant consumption (Eh control, nitrogen and low-oxygen air), are discussed.

Permanent ventilation controls such as stoppings, overcasts, and undercasts for use in coal mines are required to meet MSHA’s safety standards for fire endurance and flexural strength. Due to technological advances in materials and their design for use as ventilation controls, an engineering program was established to evaluate newer or “nontraditional” ventilation controls. The program is intended to assist manufacturers, enforcement personnel and mine operators in determining if “nontraditional” ventilation controls, for example plastic membrane construction and lightweight block, meet the prescribed safety standards. The program is presented with a description of required tests and examples of products evaluated.

Knowing the location of voids/fractures in roof rock will be greatly helpful for roof support design. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way for determining void location in roof rock. In this research, feed pressure and rotation torque are found to be good indicators for identifying the voids, based on the results of a series of laboratory experiments. A set of computational rules has been developed to locate voids in mine roof using the measured roof drilling parameters and implemented in MRGIS, a software package developed to allow mine engineers to make use of the large amount of roof drilling parameters for predicting roof geology properties automatically. Anew feature, 2D map+3D figure display, is also added to MRGIS.

Iran was a lodestone for the attention of industrial countries and companies wanting to share in its industrial development during the last two decades and particularly after 1972. Prior to 1972, most industrial projects in the private sector were on a relatively small scale and could be carried out in reasonably orderly fashion in spite of limitations of a primitive infrastructure and meager indigenous supply of managerial and technical skills. People with these skills could be found but not in abundance, and many of them were total¬ly engaged in various government ministries and projects. Thus it was that nearly all private sector industries, even long-established ones, required one or more foreigners to give guidance. A barite mine and processing facility was brought on line by Dresser Industries in 1960 without serious operational problems. A few expatriate experts were able to select and train a stable group of staff and production people and establish sound management principles for continued growth. The huge and increasing oil revenues after 1973 gave superficial credence to ideas of the Iranian government that the country could easily finance the jump into the industrial 20th century. All necessary skills and equipment not available in Iran would be imported, and intensive training programs would prepare Iranians for operating the new facilities. Large projects for steel production, copper production, oil refining, petrochemical production, cement production, and others were started or expanded. These are basic industries that consume substantial quantities of refractories. Studies made in 1972 indicated that the existing industries plus expanded and new projects scheduled to come into production would lead to a market sufficiently large to justify a refractory producing plant. Concurrent studies of raw material sources showed that clay, the largest tonnage item, would be locally available; the other raw materials would be imported. Iran Refractories Company (IREFCO) was founded in 1973 and started production in 1976.

THE PENETRATION RATE BASELINE DILEMMA The penetration rate is the instantaneous advance rate of a TBM in a rock tunnel. Normally expressed in feet per hour. The production rate is the penetration rate multiplied by the number of hours worked and then factored by the actual utilization of the TBM. In a given rock formation, the actual production rate is a result of many factors some of which are within the control of the contractor and some of which are based on the route selected. Factors that are within the contractors control are cutter profile, frequency of cutter changes, thrust, rotation speed, cutter spacing and the efficiency of the operation. Factors that are site (route) specific are compressive strength, fracture orientation, fracture frequency, micro- fracturing, quartz content, Moh’s hardness, Cerchar Abrasivity Brazilian Tensile Strength and Youngs Modulus of the rock. In addition the following route speci?c conditions are beyond the contractors control; rockjointing, rock stress fault zones, water in?ow and rock decomposition; all of which effect production rate. Any one of the above defined rock properties, equipment specifications and actual operating usage will change the penetration rate. Furthermore, since the rock formation changes both in content and orientation as the tunnel advances, the penetration rate is constantly varying. The current industry practice in bidding tunnels is for each contractor to individually evaluate the rock hardness and other properties and from this information develop a penetration rate. All other factors being equal, the contractor using the most optimistic penetration rate will be the low bidder and be awarded the project. As this view is by definition optimistic, invariably the rock will be harder than the low bid assessment and the contractor will request additional compensation for the changed condition. The contractor will attempt to justify his optimistic assessment as reasonable by using expert supporting analysis. The above described example which is quite common at present in the industry tends to make the most optimistic contractor (at time of bidding) the contractor selected for the project whereas it is in the owners interest to contract with the most efficient contractor not the most optimistic. This situation is similar to the Geotechnical analysis that was prevalent in the industry over twenty years ago. Many projects have experienced a significant reduction of penetration rate from that which was originally estimated. In these cases the contractor often makes a claim for extra compensation based on the difference between the actual rock encountered

The Sunshine Mining Co. has recently started up its new silver refinery in Kellogg, ID. The new plant recovers silver anc copper values from a high grade tetrahedrite concentrate using hydro- metallurgical processes. The plant and process are both new and have gone through the initial startup phase during the first six months of 1985. The full scale plant was developed from laboratory test work. While the metallurgy of the process worked as expected, the material handling problems were difficult to over-come. As might be expected, those parts of the plant that represented available technology started up easily, while the parts that represented new technology presented the most difficulty. Topics covered in this paper include: 1) insufficient type and amount of agitation in the leach vessels, 2) discharge of a non- homogeneous slurry from the leach vessels, and 3) problems associated with very low flow rates in slurry lines.
