In 2011, the value of mineral production increased in the United States for the second consecutive year (Table 1). Production increased modestly for most mineral commodities mined in the United States, and price increases, especially for precious metals, resulted in increases in the value of production. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Minerals? contribution to the GDP increased for the second consecutive year. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those in mineral production and consumption rates. U.S. apparent mineral consumption (industrial) of 11 mineral commodities decreased substantially from 2005 to 2010 (aluminum, cadmium, cement, copper, iron, lead, salt, soda ash, steel, tin and zinc). Data for 2011 were not calculated, but the data show a sustained decrease (especially for the metals) preceding the recession through 2010, so consumption seems to be behaving differently than production and GDP. After continued decline following the 2008?2009 recession, the construction industry began to show signs of improvement during 2011, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, and gypsum ? mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction. Crushed stone production, however, continued to decline.

The development of heap leach technology for the treatment of low grade gold and silver ores has led to a boom in gold production in the Western United States in the last 15 years. The heap leaching process consists of stacking the mined ore on a specially prepared leach pad followed by leaching with dilute alkaline cyanide solution. Depending on the nature of the ore, it may require crushing and/or agglomeration prior to stacking on the leach pad. As the dilute alkaline cyanide solution migrates down through the stacked ore, the precious metal values along with a portion of the base metal values present in the ore are dissolved to give a pregnant leach solution which is collected at the base of the stacked ore. The precious metal values are then recovered by zinc precipitation or by adsorption on activated carbon. Once all of the economic metal values have been leached from the ore, the spent heap leach pad, the leached materials, and associated process solutions must be decomissioned. Decommissioning requires that the spent heap leach pad along with the leached materials and process solution be treated to reduce the concentration of the residual cyanide, base metal cyanide complexes, and other anionic metal species to levels where they no longer represent a long tenn liability for the environment and the operator. The levels to which these components must be reduced is dependent upon the applicable water quality standards as determined by the responsible federal, state, and local agencies. As environmental awareness has grown, these standards have become increasingly stringent. A number of treatment options have been developed for the de-toxification of the process residues. These include natural degradation which incorporates bio-degradation, fresh water rinsing, alkaline chlorination, hydrogen peroxide, and sulfur dioxide/air. Each of these options has been reviewed with regard to relative effectiveness, generation of hazardous by­products, reagent handling considerations, relative costs, and time requirements by Denton, Iverson, and Gosling I. As an outgrowth of the program to develop Henkel's guanidine based gold extractants, COGNIS, Inc., the environmental ann of Henkel, has developed the CyanoMet R process for the extraction and concentration of the various cyanide and anionic metal species from the dilute aqueous alkaline solutions generated during the process of detoxifying spent heap leach pads. This paper describes the CyanoMet R process, its application to three different feed solutions, and treatment of the concentrate generated by the process.

Controlling and predicting ground movements are essential to the design of shoring systems. The Courthouse Commons tunnel in San Diego, California, included a 56-foot-deep temporary shaft as a launching point for tunneling using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The rectangular shaft was unique in that it was surcharged on one wall by an 11-story building and employed a hybrid support of excavation design. An array of geotechnical instrumentation was used to monitor lateral and vertical movements at the ground surface. California’s San Diego County Water Authority provides a safe and reliable water supply to more than 3.3 million residents through twenty-four member agencies. The 2nd Aqueduct pipelines, a critical infrastructure consisting of three large-diameter pipelines, are susceptible to natural threats including streambed erosion, channel migration, and seismic hazards within the 3,840-foot-long Moosa Canyon segment of the alignment. A state-of-good repair, hazard mitigation, and resiliency project is progressing to ensure uninterrupted water supply. For each pipeline, a segment will be replaced by tunneling. A high-level project development approach is presented, focusing on alternative selection, environmental and geotechnical considerations, and operations and maintenance constraints.

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. "The proposed Baltimore Red Line light rail system includes a 3.4 mile downtown tunnel (DTT) with five underground stations. The design of the underground stations involved overcoming several challenges, including limited right-of-way, high groundwater and uplift pressures, and metamorphic rock within the station depths. An innovative design was developed to maximize the internal station space while minimizing cost. The station designs use slurry walls for temporary and permanent support and groundwater control. Depths within rock are supported with cast-in-place concrete walls, the thickness of which are minimized through the use of permanent rock anchors for support of the rock mass and slurry wall toes. Permanent tiedown anchors are used for uplift resistance, which minimizes the station depths, volume of rock excavation, and the volume of deadweight concrete. Design considerations regarding individual elements and overall integration of the slurry walls, CIP walls, and multiple anchor types are presented.INTRODUCTION The Baltimore Red Line (BRL) project is a proposed light rail transit line for the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) that runs east to west through Baltimore City and County. The project includes the Downtown Tunnel (DTT) consisting of 3.0 miles of twin running tunnels, two portals, five underground stations, and a pedestrian tunnel, as shown in Figure 1. The tunnels have an outside diameter of 21.8 feet and are designed to be mined using pressurized face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The stations, portals, and the pedestrian tunnel are designed as cut-and-cover structures using slurry walls (concrete diaphragm walls) for both temporary support of excavation (SOE) and permanent structural walls. The dimensions of the five underground stations are summarized in Table 1. Design challenges included limited right-of-way (ROW), challenging soils conditions, strong metamorphic rock within the station depths, and high groundwater conditions. The final station designs included innovative use of slurry walls, tieback anchors, rock anchors, and tiedown anchors."

Truck-shovel dispatch systems based on linear or nonlinear programming algorithms have been in operation since the mid-1980s, with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine. These systems are known for shortcomings related to the logic behind the decision-making of the operational objectives. This makes it necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. To address this issue, the present work discusses the implementation of a methodology based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to assist in the decision-making of the best optimization goals arrangement when operating a fleet management system. The focus of the analysis is on the evaluation of variable goal weights in a nonpreemptive, multigoal optimization model for multiple uncertain scenarios based on regions of optimal feasibility.

Pyrite cinder is generated by roasting pyrite for sulfur dioxide production. It contains up to 62% iron, but also may contain other hazardous or toxic materials such as Zn, Pb, As, T1, Cd, Cu, Sn and S. Furthermore, the physical characteristics are not properly suited for conventional sintering. As a result pyrite cinder is considered to be unsuitable for iron and steelmaking or for outside storage because of its potential for causing environmental problems. In recent years industrialized nations have put increasing pressure on the manufacturers to either use such waste products or properly dispose of them. In this study, solutions to both the iron recovery and disposal problem were attempted by pelletizing the pyrite fines with internal carbon. The pellets, after hydrothermal hardening, were reduced and melted in a furnace for hot metal production. Hot metal of usuable quality was produced and the hazardous materials were either collected with the fumes or in the slag.

In April 1975 Kaiser Steel Corporation and the United States' Department of Energy entered into a cost-sharing agreement for the demonstration of shield-type longwall supports on three consecutive longwall panels at Kaiser's York Canyon' Mine in New Mexico. Under this agreement the Department of Energy supplied 117 Hemscheidt 320 HSL caliper-type shield supports and hydraulic pumps for the duration of the demonstration. The purpose of the demonstration was to educate the U.S. coal mining industry as to the benefits in production, productivity, health and safety, and increased coal extraction afforded by shield-type longwall mining systems and to provide the industry with a working model. The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50 percent of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15-percent reduction in energy usage (kwh/t). These improvements have been made through optimization of grinding efficiency and use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory testwork and computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

Two modified polyacrylamide flocculants, namely polyacrylamide with glycolic acid functionality (PAMG), and a copolymer of acrylamide with N-acryloyl-[T]- aminobutyric acid (HPVP), were synthesized, characterised and evaluated for selective separation in apatite/quartz and apatite/dolomite/calcite systems, respectively. PAMG flocculant was found selective in the separation of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) from its mixtures with quartz at acidic to neutral pH range. The selectivity deteriorated at alkaline pH. In contrast, polyacrylic acid (PAA) flocculant was found most effective only in the alkaline pH range. HPVP flocculant (even though flocculating all three minerals namely apatite, dolomite and calcite) was observed to be quite selective for the separation of calcite from apatite-dolomite minerals in single mineral tests in the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate dispersant at neutral pH. There was, however, no selectivity observed during tests on synthetic mixtures. This loss in selectivity is attributed to the phenomenon of hetero-flocculation, as reported earlier, for separation in an apatite-dolomite system with polyethylene oxide.

The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.

The Serrana Process was developed in the 60's to concentrate an igneous low grade phosphate/carbonate ore using tall oil as a collector and corn starch as a modifier in alkaline medium. Nowadays, although tall oil has already been substituted by a new amphoteric synthetic collector, starch hasn't been substituted yet. This study is an attempt towards understanding the role played by corn starch in this specific system. By means of bench scale flotation test, it was observed that corn starch was capable of promoting the flotation of apatite, phlogopite and dolomite. No effect over calcite was observed. The best efficiency of separation apatite/gangue minerals was yielded at the concentration ranges of 17 to 20 mg/l of starch and 13 to 17 mg/l of tall oil. The starch concentration showed a strong influence over the characteristics of the froth produced by the flotation tests, mainly over the volume of the froth and its mineralization.

The effect of the feed size distribution on the kinetic parameters in pyrite flotation was studied. The kinetic parameters of the particular sizes were determined as a function of whether other particle sizes were present. From the data, a relation between the pyrite flotation rate and the particle size distributions was obtained. It was shown that the flotation rate constant (k) is a function of the size modulus (dt) of the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann distribution, and its variation may be expressed as k = a • exp(b . d,) for either individual size fractions or composite feed. Parameters a and b are dependent on the particle size distribution of the feed. Specifically, parameter a increases linearly as the distribution becomes coarser. The above relationship was also tested under conditions in which the collector (KAX) dosage was varied from 130 to 278 g/t. It was shown that the established relation was not dependent on the collector dosage.

Samarium (Sm), one of the rare earth elements (REEs), and cobalt (Co) are used in the production of SmCo permanent magnets, which have excellent temperature stability, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Of the two types of SmCo magnets, one contains a high amount of iron, approximately 15.2 percent. This paper focuses on the recycling of iron (Fe)-bearing SmCo. In this study, an oxidative leaching process with nitric acid was developed to eliminate iron through in situ hydrolysis and to dissolve REEs and Co. The influence of experimental conditions on the formation of an amorphous iron compound through the hydrolysis of Fe3+ in a nitric acid environment was thoroughly examined based on a Taguchi orthogonal array. The optimal parameters for oxidative leaching were determined to be an acid concentration of 3 mol/L, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/10, and a process temperature of 60 °C.

"In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

Water is one of the most important ressources of our planet. Unlike many other natural resources, water cannot be substituted by anything and must therefore be handled with the utmost care. Depending on the region and the possible shortage of water, the importance of water increases even further. Water consumption is not the only factor. In the construction industry, water pollution from auxiliary and operating materials and processes as well as other contaminants and their resulting load on wastewater play an important role. The sources for wastewater on tunneling construction sites are various: Washing water, seepage water accumulating in construction pits, tunnel water, water used in the slurry circuit in fluid-assisted tunneling methods or water from concrete work and stone cutting all these waters are contaminated with a range of pollutants like solids, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, etc. These contaminants can be removed or treated/reduced with the help of specifically designed wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). After the treatment the cleaned water can be either, in best case, reused on the construction site itself or discharged into water utilities like the available sewer or river pin respecting their discharge requirements. Due to dwindling water resources globally, the continuously rising discharge limits and the ever more important aspect of sustainability the use of WTPs on tunneling construction site will be indispensable. In this paper, it will be presented how these systems are designed and work, what advantages they offer environmentally as well as financially and what to look out for when planning and implementing such a system onto jobsite.

This case study evaluates the long- term physical stability of various historical mining structures remediated by the Center for Mining Environmental Research and Studies (CIEMAN) in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca, Peru. The region has a long history of mining activity, with remnants dating back to pre-Inca times. CIEMAN has assumed responsibility for remediating 286 environmental liabilities in the area, including adits, shafts, pits, tailings, and waste rock dumps. The study analyzes the methods employed to stabilize these structures, including geotechnical engineering techniques and revegetation. Long-term monitoring results are presented, assessing the effectiveness of remediation measures and predicting the future stability of the structures. This study highlights the importance of responsible remediation of mining environmental liabilities to ensure the safety and sustainability of communities and ecosystems affected by historical mining.

Investors and other stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the quality and quantity of sustainability disclosures as well as the extent to which such disclosures correlate with sustainability practices of mining firms. This is because disclosure policies vary widely across firms in terms of extensiveness, materiality, and disclosed topic. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary examination of the relationship between sustainability performance and disclosure. We use sustainability performance indicators such as water and energy use and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB’s) standards to evaluate disclosures. Our preliminary results show that some measures of sustainability performance (energy use) are negatively correlated to the amount and quality of disclosures while others (water use) are not. Thus, investors should not judge sustainability performance based solely on the amount and quality of sustainability disclosures. In addition, our results suggest that firm size and ownership as well as institutional membership could impact the strength of correlations between disclosure policy and sustainability performance

Field investigations have revealed that sawdust can be used as an efficient additive to ANFO for carrying out production blasts in limestone mines. Sawdust can be used at a reasonably reduced cost without sacrificing fragmentation, muck profile and wall control. Such additives lower the detonation pressure of ANFO by acting as low-grade fuel that reacts or burns more slowly in the presence of ammonium nitrate than does fuel oil. On detonation, it eventually forms near-ideal oxygen balance that helps in liberating maximum energy to break the surrounding rock. It also forms a low-density stable mixture that helps in reducing loading density (kg/m) of explosive in the blasthole. Experiments performed at the Hirmi Limestone mine, M/s L&T, and at the Lambasta Limestone mine, M/s Jaypee Rewa Cements, showed the novel acceptance of the technique in a highly competitive market where cost reduction has been a major area of thrust.
