As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalization, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that are suited to the contemporary and future mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more. In countries like Australia, where mining plays a crucial role in the economy, the need for curriculum updates is more pressing than ever. As the mining industry evolves with new technologies and sustainable practices, there is a growing demand for a workforce skilled in these modern approaches. Recognizing this necessity, universities such as the University of New South Wales and Curtin University have taken significant steps to revamp their educational programs. By updating their academic offerings, both universities aim to equip graduates with the necessary skills to drive innovation and sustainability in mining, supporting Australia’s development as a leader in this critical sector. Moreover, the selection of topics that drive curricula update and the focus of the research institutions in mining engineering must extend beyond mere technological and technical aspects to include social and ethical dimensions. In this context, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in association with the Colorado School of Mines, has introduced the topic of Humanitarian Engineering (HE) in 2020. HE is a socio-technical approach that focuses on developing engineering solutions that promote the sustainable development of communities addressing their basic needs and aiming to improve their quality of life (10, 18). By focusing on sustainable development, community engagement, and equitable resource distribution, HE helps the industry build positive relationships with stakeholders, reduce conflicts, and foster social license to operate. As the mining industry seeks sustainable and socially responsible practices, future engineers require training in this area to understand the broader impacts of their work, fostering a mindset that prioritizes community well-being and environmental stewardship alongside technical proficiency.

Mining operations rely on high-duty, mobile and semimobile equipment to move rock, process ore, maintain roads and sustain site services. Typical mining fleets combine loading and hauling assets with production, logistics and maintenance equipment, which are all expected to operate at high load factors, over long hours and in harsh environments. The mining industry is under pressure to decarbonize their operations and to transition to lower-emission technologies. While decarbonization options are well understood for stationary process equipment, challenges remain regarding how to decarbonize heavy-duty mobile emission sources. This article presents the methodology and findings of a structured assessment of low- and zero-emission pathways for mobile mining equipment. The approach is data driven and equipment centric, evaluating technology readiness, commercial and technical viability, and the financial implications of alternative powertrains including battery electric, hybrid electric, hydrogen fuel cell/combustion and low-carbon fuels such as renewable diesel and biodiesel. Supporting infrastructure requirements are also reviewed. Baseline attributes such as engine/motor power, duty cycles, energy intensity and typical purchase price are compiled into an equipment matrix, with alternatives matched by output power to ensure performance comparability. Capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) are calculated conservatively from public sources, with OPEX combining energy/fuel costs and maintenance rates that reflect powertrain complexity.

EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. However, successful application of these diagrams requires several things be kept in mind to prevent what others have termed ?gross errors? in their calculation and use. The aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the thermodynamic equilibrium software, STABCAL. This includes a breakdown of the Gibbs? Phase Rule and how it is employed in STABCAL to modify the diagrams. This methodology was then applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system and resulting diagrams are compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The resulting mass-balanced diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is noted to compare well with spectroelectrochemical measurements using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.

Newmont?s Twin Creeks Mine, located in northern Nevada, is producing gold ore from surface mining operations. The ore is currently processed at three different on-site facilities depending on ore type and grade. Processing facilities operate under stringent geochemical blending constraints that must be met from mine ore deliveries and off-site sourced ore. To analyze various strategic options, the technical team utilizes the mathematical optimization approach. However, due to the size and complexity of the operation, there are unique challenges in optimizing life-of-mine production scheduling. This paper describes those challenges and methods developed to take advantage of different scheduling software to effectively compensate each other and result in reasonable guidance. This paper also describes how those scheduling results are reflected in detailed mine plan and cost estimate work.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies, including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training.

"Information diffusion potential of a social media user affects how quickly information about a mineral project can diffuse through that user. If management can use social media and network analysis, in community engagement program, to understand how fast and how far information will diffuse to communities and followers of particular social media users, it can selectively focus on the most influential users. This paper proposes a method to examine the information diffusion potential of social media accounts. The work uses Gephi, an open source software, to extract and analyze data from different Twitter handles to predict their information diffusion potential. The work uses case studies of real Twitter users (e.g. mining news organizations and bloggers) associated with mining to illustrate the approach. The case study results show that there are significant disparities in information diffusion potential that will demand selective attention. This research will help mines develop effective social media engagement strategies. INTRODUCTION The mineral industry provides raw material for industrial activity to support our society (Martens and Rattmann, 2001). Mines have changed conventional mining practices to sustainable ones because of the negative impacts of mining and increased public awareness (Wang et al 2016). The concept of sustainable mining is getting mature as stakeholders (e.g., governments, investors and host communities) are getting involved in mining projects (World Economic Forum, 2014). The failure of mining companies to address the demands of these stakeholders might result in failure to acquire social license to operate (Thomson and Boutilier, 2011). The social license to operate (SLO), if granted, is mutually beneficial to all stakeholders. Mines prefer being granted SLO and keeping it to avoid any kind of social unrest due to their operation (Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014). Mining communities can grant different levels of SLO; ranging from withholding SLO to psychologically identifying with the project (Joyce and Thomson, 2000; Thomsan and Boutilier, 2011). Most of the previous work to understand community perceptions and SLO in mining is generally qualitative (ICMM, 2012a; Thomson and Boutilier, 2011; Prno, 2013; Moffat and Zhang, 2014; IFC, 2014). In particular, there is limited work on how community perceptions change over time due to information diffusion (Boateng and Awuah-Offei, 2017). However, SLO changes with respect to time (Yates and Horvath, 2013), which can result in risks that are not easy to predict. Mine managers and engineers have a desire to understand these changes so as to mitigate these risks (Que and Awuah-Offei, 2014; Que et al., 2015)."

Although much has been said about the high cost of exploration, both at home and overseas, little of a specific nature has been published on actual finding costs, if indeed such data has been developed. This contrasts sharply with our sister industry, petroleum, where finding costs for oil and gas are available for virtually any country In the world. The reason is largely attributable to the genetic complexity of the hard minerals, as opposed to petroleum, and the increasing difficulties we are facing in the search for new orebodies. We have available to us data on the annual exploration budgets of most of the major mining companies which show them to run into the tens of millions of dollars. My co-panelist, Dr. Walthier, Director - Corporation Exploration, St. Joe Minerals Corporation, New York, NY, summed up the feelings of many explorationists in a recent keynote address when he stated, "I would not recommend a mineral exploration program of a general nature in North America budgeted at less than three to four million dollars annually, spread over four to five years -- or smaller amounts for more years". We have the fact that many of the major companies now prefer to "buy into" a new mineral discovery, particularly overseas, because of the high-risk and high-cost of exploration. Is there, then, a place for the small investor, let us say with a budget of under $200,000 per year and, if so, where and how? This paper is directed toward the above question and is based on experience gained while managing a limited international exploration program, on a shoestring, over the past three years.

In order to comply with time limitations imposed by this symposium, a very narrow but nonetheless interesting segment of the market has been chosen for discussion of the preparation of a tailor-made product to meet a specific need, and in view of the fact that the barite market is one of the oldest and one of the broadest non-metallic mineral markets in the world, it is necessary that we place this in perspective. Of a recent world annual production; (i.e., 1966 figures released last year in MINERALS YEARBOOK), of some four million tons, the United States consumed over 1/2 million tons, of which approximately 950,000 tons were produced domestically and approximately 700,000 tons were imported. Of this total, something approaching 90% was used for drilling-mud weighting, and of the balance, all but about 60,000 tone is consumed in the production of glass, barium chemicals, aggregates, and other minor uses; thus we are really taking a look at a very minute, however important, and very selective, portion of the total barite-market. The real meat of this paper, after eliminating all irrelevant uses of barite, and delineating the area of discussion, resolves itself into the approach to a favorable marketing area and a specific attack on that area. Cost, to the user, has been, patently, a function of distance, as the basic price of barite has varied very little over the years until recently, and freight rates have been the governing factor. Conversely, the seller of barytes must make concession in the plant price to compensate for distance, if he is to successfully compete.

Net Present Value (NPV) derived from Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis remains the dominant metric for evaluating mining projects despite its well-documented inability to capture managerial flexibility under uncertainty. DCF assumes that all risks are perfectly priced by financial markets. This is an unlikely assumption for volatile commodity prices, geological variability, or the array of mining technical and operational risks present on all mine sites. Real Options Analysis (ROA) was developed to remedy this limitation by explicitly valuing the ability of managers to defer, expand, scale, switch, or abandon investments as new information emerges, and to capture upside and mitigate downside risks. While ROA is philosophically correct and routinely shows an uplift in project value compared with DCF, its practical application at industrial scale is severely constrained, ROA faces the reality of a combinatorial explosion in complexity of decision trees, Monte Carlo simulations and other models required when multiple interdependent or sequential options exist across numerous mining zones and time periods. The AMC Hill of Value® (HoV) process adopts the same intellectual foundation as ROA, that flexibility has economic value, but operationalizes it through a far more robust and scalable architecture. It is built on parametric relationships, rapid scheduling, and multi-objective evolutionary optimisation. HoV can evaluate millions of compound, interdependent real options in a single optimisation run, delivering resilient, adaptive strategies that preserve managerial flexibility while simultaneously optimising NPV, mine life, risk exposure, and other corporate objectives. This paper demonstrates that HoV is the practical, industrial-scale embodiment of real options thinking in mining: it discovers, ranks, and translates the most valuable real options into strategic mine plans, overcoming the scalability barriers that have prevented widespread adoption of classical ROA.

A prototype expert system for planning and designing underground coal mines has been developed in a doctoral study (Basu, 1991) at the University of Kentucky (U.K.). The objective of the study was to provide a design tool for configuring layout parameters, production systems, and for determining economic feasibility. Details of knowledge engineering and the prototype knowledge-based system for integrated and intelligent planning and design have been covered in the dissertation. The prototype demonstrates its robustness by allowing interaction among major design components, most notably among ventilation, ground control, and production planning. A plan for testing and evaluating the prototype, an important phase of software development, is presented here. Existing evaluation procedures for expert system prototypes are discussed and the evaluations for the underground coal mine design expert system prototype are included. The initial testing plan used senior-level mining engineering students to test the acceptance of the prototype. This test suggested the usefulness of such a system for training and instruction. This initial acceptance test was performed with the feasibility prototype. The other test objective, i.e., testing the model's accuracy, involved extensive participation of domain experts. For overall accuracy evaluation, an existing underground coal mine design was compared with the output from a design session using the expert system prototype. The testing procedure is not an isolated, independent development phase. Much of the accuracy evaluation is done at the time of knowledge base development. Therefore, the knowledgebase itself does not need a formal test phase. The major purpose of the field testing is to determine probable user acceptance. The acceptance test determines the completeness of the prototype and also will determine efficiency of user interfaces.

"INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is located approximately 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico and is the nation’s first underground geologic repository for transuranic (TRU) and TRU-mixed waste (see Figure 1). The WIPP facility was opened for operation in 1999 when the first TRU waste shipment arrived at the WIPP facility for disposal.WIPP facility does not employ typical production aspects of a conventional mine. Instead, the mining focus is on the quality of the excavation to ensure safe disposal of TRU and TRU-mixed waste (Walls, 1991). GEOLOGY WIPP underground repository is mined within a 2,000 feet-thick bedded-halite formation (Salado Formation) (see Figure 2). The WIPP underground repository is located approximately 2,150 feet beneath the surface near the center of the Salado Formation. Geologic criterion and site-selection factors evaluated for the selection of the repository included topography, depth, thickness, lateral extent, lithology, stratigraphy, structure, erosion, dissolution, subsidence, surface water, aquifers, hydrologic transport, climatic fluctuations, manmade penetrations (U.S. Department of Energy, 1980).FACILITY DESIGN Profit did not play a major role in the WIPP’s conception like in a conventional mine. This was due to the extensive amount of additional regulations and safety controls that had to be built into the WIPP facility. Since it is nuclear and hazardous waste disposal facility, it must meet certain federal and state requirements for TRU-mixed waste. One of the major regulatory drivers for the WIPP facility is defined in the WIPP Land Withdrawal Act (LWA). One of the requirements in the WIPP LWA requires the DOE to submit documentation of continued compliance with Title 40 CFR Part 191, Subparts B, and C. These standards are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The DOE must submit documentation of continued compliance (recertification) with these regulations every five years. In addition to the LWA, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is another major regulatory driver for the WIPP facility. Since the WIPP facility is categorized as a “Miscellaneous Unit” under 40 CFR, it must meet extensive environmental performance standards. These standards are defined in the WIPP Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (HWFP). The HWFP defines the terms and conditions that the Secretary of the New Mexico Environment Department has determined necessary to protect human health and the environment (U.S. Department of Energy and Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC, 2015)."

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. "In the global mining industry, there are those who seem resigned to the fact that the mining industry has always operated according to certain time-tested principles that don’t involve jumping on every new technological trend. Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. Numerical modelling has been extensively used to estimate plastic displacement in faults and rock mass surrounding mine excavations. Particularly, for fault slip seismicity, modelled plastic displacement is usually utilized to estimate seismic potential, however these methods assume that all the displacement caused during an specific simulated excavation step, is released as a single event at each step. This representation corresponds to a conservative estimation since rock mass displacement does not occur as one single event but as an exponential distribution of many small displacements and a few large ones. When displacement is expressed as seismic magnitude, this exponential distribution is addressed as the Gutenberg Richter (GR) relationship. This paper present a method to decompose the results from numerical models into a distribution of seismic events The reconstruction of the GR relationship from modelling displacement permits not only a more realistic approximation of the expected maximum magnitudes but also provides a tool to develop a probabilistic estimation of the maximum possible magnitudes.

Discussion by P. Malozemoff I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years. In underground mines, it is not economic to develop reserves beyond a certain depth, so the life of initially established reserves must be limited. In these cases, it is especially important to have a good geological understanding of the orebody and its continuity. To accommodate these concepts and present proof of economic soundness for a mining enterprise, a mathematical analysis should yield a life long enough to allow exploration and the development of additional reserves that would ensure a longer mine life and a more profitable result.

"In today’s challenging mining environment the “Big Picture” (Caterpillar, 2013) approach to mining is often neglected. With haulage costs approaching up to 45 % of the overall mining costs, all too often the load-haul-dump- return cycle is not investigated in its completeness. This paper will discuss the aspects of taking the time to observe an operation from the “Big Picture” approach. In today’s mining business miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in the past decade. The endless human resource, safety, environmental, cost control issues and performance initiatives, detracts from precious time that may have been dedicated to examining the day to day operation. Having examined numerous mining operations over the past several years, one common denominator is lack of time to properly observe operating practices in the field and recognize both positive and negative observations. The old fashioned vocation of observing the operation to assess the haulage, loading and maintenance processes to adjust, maximize or enhance operations have sometimes vanished. Four areas to be discussed in this paper: (1) Look at the “Big Picture”(Caterpillar, 2013), (2) Use common sense, (3) Areas identified for biggest improvements in the operations, (4) Observation of small details for big impacts to lower cost per ton and increased production. The objective of this paper is to provide low cost recommendations to lower cost per ton and increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all or the “rookie” on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to man the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? And let the technology system do the rest? So what could go wrong? Lots. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, the supervisors just hop in the pick-up and tell the shovel operator to speed up. Sounds simple enough. When the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, the simple things that were not executed over the months previously and as a result today the mines performance is not where it should be. A mine is built by people. Managers who have the vision to develop the ore body in a manner that follows sound engineering practices. The infrastructure to mill the ore and support the equipment needed to move the material. Along the way equipment is procured and operators trained to run the gear. Engineers and geologists set up the design, the material movement, and haulage routes. Sounds easy to this point. So, why mine after mine is there this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down? Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to lowering your cost per ton."

Kidston's 14 000 t/d mine and mill complex in Queensland, Australia, started operation in January 1985. During its first 18 months of operation, the mine produced over 7000 kg (225,000 oz) of gold, making it the largest gold producer in Australia. This paper describes the planning, logistics, flowsheet, and process for the Kidston project, and some of the problems encountered during startup and the measures taken to correct these problems.

The present work discusses the nuances of scaling and flow similarity to develop a 1/40th scale version of a longwall coal mine. Details on the geometric, kinematic, and dynamic scaling of the physical model are presented and discussed. This works also discusses using a 30% CO2 – 70% He gas mixture as a surrogate for methane. It also presents the implications of various Reynolds numbers (ranging from 7,000 to 140,000) and rotation of the shearer drums in the dynamic representation of the airflow and gas mixtures in the physical scaled model.
