Industrial minerals are receiving increased attention by metals, coal and other companies seeking to diversify and stabilize earnings. Each industrial mineral has a unique set (and sub-sets) of business dynamics, however, and the diversity can present a bewildering maze to the corporate planner. Shrugging off this complexity and relying on serendipity for entry opportunities often results in unsuitable acquisitions. An effective alternative used in exploration can also be applied to strategic planning. By providing focus and direction, this flexible methodology can prevent wasting corporate resources on random pursuits and result in a quicker, more satisfactory achievement of diversification goals.

In recent years attempts have been made to fight open and intensive mine fires by the use of special extinguishers, which are able to produce great volumes of inert gases directed into the fire zone. These extinguishers are derived from turbo-jet engines used in aircrafts and adopted for operations in mine conditions. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention to a computer simulation method, enabling studies of dynamical behaviour of mine ventilation processes disturbed by open fires, which are also influenced by measures taken during fire fighting actions i.a. the mentioned operating extinguishers. The first part of this paper gives an account of the principles on which the computer simulation program, concerning the non- steady mine ventilation process, the fire as a heat source and the extinguisher as a source of inert gas and moisture has been based. The next part of this paper deals with simplifying assumptions and the subsequent limitations of the derived simulation pro- gram. Finally, from an example of a computer simulation, the results will be presented and relations shown between parameters characterising the ventilation process during the fire fighting action.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk, either at the commissioning of a concentrator or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-confidence flotation testing (HCFT) was developed for this purpose and is part of the list of technologies at various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of research on this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to the HCFT method and complementary connections between sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. "In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements, such as, face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and equipment operator positioning, can impact the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for both remote-controlled continuous mining machine operators and haulage operators at ten U.S. underground mines. Results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little based on depth of cut, but are significantly affected by ventilation configuration. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations in blowing face ventilation. The type of cut influenced exposures, with elevated exposures observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into, or counter to, the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposure attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis of recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures when performing a variety of continuous mining cuts.INTRODUCTION Underground continuous coal mining operations may encounter a wide range of conditions and arrangements during production and development activities. These activities typically produce respirable coal mine dust, putting operators of continuous mining machines and coal haulers at risk for elevated exposures. In order to comply with federal regulations limiting respirable dust exposures for the duration of a working shift, mine operators typically implement ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded-bed dust collectors (scrubbers) to dilute and control mine dusts during coal cutting. Nevertheless, changes in operational conditions can limit the ability of these controls to effectively reduce dust exposures. Some examples of conditions that can change during the course of mining include face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and operator positioning. Because these arrangements are largely under the control of mine operators, any insight into associated exposures may inform future plans and behaviors, reducing occupational exposures to respirable dust. The objective of this OMSHR study is to evaluate respirable dust exposures associated with a range of continuous mining arrangements by comparing occupational dust concentrations measured during a series of field surveys. These comparisons consider face ventilation configurations, depths of cut, and crosscut mining practices."

Grinding is a necessary component in the processing of a number of minerals, and improvements in this area could provide substantial cost savings for the minerals industry. Optimizing the process of grinding, however, is a difficult task because there are multiple objectives; i.e., several aspects of the process are important including the fineness of the ground product, the energy consumed in the process, and the viscosity characteristics of the final slurry. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are search algorithms based on the mechanics of natural genetics and have been proven capable of solving multiple objective optimization problems. These robust search techniques are able to rapidly locate near-optimum solutions across a broad spectrum of very difficult optimization problems. In this paper, two varieties of GA are used to optimize a grinding process as it is described by a computer model: (1) a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) and (2) a micro genetic algorithm (MGA). The performance of these techniques is compared to the performance of a more conventional search technique, a simplex algorithm. Results indicate that the GAs are efficient, versatile, quite capable of improving the grinding process, and easily incorporated into the toolbox of today's process engineer.

The principals of McCabe Industrial Minerals, Inc., have been involved in the mining, processing, and marketing of nonmetallic minerals for more than 40 years. In addition to marketing nonmetallic minerals produced by other companies, McCabe Minerals owns and operates three plants that produce headlap-roofing granules, with 25 employees and annual sales approaching $6 million. During its 22 years of operation, the company has developed many different markets, and a list of factors that is used in making our marketing and feasibility studies. These criteria (Table 1) are used extensively by the company in all of its projects, and we present this and other data about the company in this brief report. The presence of hard roof poses a significant threat to the safety of underground coal mining. In this study, a mechanical model is established for underground stopes to analyze the overburden structure with the advancing of the mining face. It is indicated that the load-bearing arch structure (LBAS) is formed above the stope for roofs with regular hardness, whereas the reversed-basin bearing structure (RBBS) is formed for hard roofs. Compared with the LBAS, the RBBS can induce an additional pressure at the foot of the bearing structure, and this effect becomes less as the distance between the hard roof and stope increases. The ultra-deep borehole hydro-fracturing technique (UHT) is proposed to weaken the hard roof for pressure release, and the associated equipment and procedures are also presented. The UHT is based on horizontal drilling along the axial direction of the roadway in the roof, and then the receding segmented hydraulic fracturing technique is used to achieve the purpose of fracturing (weakening) of the surrounding rocks. Field tests are carried out in 3022 roadway of Daliangwan coal mine in Yulin to assess the developed technique, equipment, and fracturing procedures. To evaluate the fracturing effect, deep borehole stress-meters are installed at different depths of the fractured and un-fractured zones of the roadway, along with hydraulic support pressure sensors placed at the mining face. The results show that compared with the un-fractured zone, the pressure on the wall and pillar sides is lower than that in the fractured zone, and the associated weighting duration and weighting area ratio of the fractured are reduced by 53.23% and 33.59%, respectively. This indicates that the presented UHT can provide a new solution for the prevention and control of mining disasters induced by hard roof failures in underground coal mining.

Production at Freeport Indonesia's Ertsberg open pit copper-gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7.5 kt/d (8270 stpd). Mill throughput remained at that rate for several years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) ore body. This discovery prompted three succes¬sive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20 kt/d (22,000 stpd). In 1988, the discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit launched an era of much larger expansions. The first of these was the installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 that increased throughput to 32 kt/d (35,270 stpd). That was followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and in 1991 the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57 kt/d (62,830 stpd). The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 brought production to its current level of 66 kt/d (72,750 stpd).

Not quite a year ago, during a speech to a group of mining professionals in Washington, DC, the subject centered around the long-range importance of conducting research projects and how much that research needs to specifically apply to health and safety matters in our industry. The point was made about the critical need to work together with government, private industry, labor organizations and academia speaking with a unified voice as we all march into the future together. The fundamental benefits of competitive research were mentioned --to improve our quality of life, to develop our energy resources, to achieve a safe and healthy environment and to ensure long-term economic growth. Very importantly, emphasis was given to the natural link that makes my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health --NIOSH --the beneficiaries of each other's findings. Unquestionably, there are lines of separation. The main responsibility of the agency I represent, MSHA, is enforcement of the nation's mine safety and health laws. But we also have an additional responsibility and that is to coordinate and give priority to research in a never-ending hunt for answers.

Significant factors believed to be responsible for tailings dam failure which can lead to loss of lives, destruction of properties and assets or damage to the environment are the mechanics of material characteristics and static liquefaction. It is therefore essential to understand the tendency for the likely occurrence of liquefaction in tailings dam as well as mechanics behind the behaviour of this tailing materials (inevitable products of ore mining, mineral and metallurgical processes). This study aims to present the mechanical behaviour and susceptibility to liquefaction of a gold tailings sample. Series of oedometer tests were conducted to determine the compression behaviour and the possibility of transitional behaviour or not. Index and physical tests were conducted to determine engineering grading descriptors which was directly linked to compression behaviour and comparisons made with other tailings. Microstructure was studied to understand the effects of fabric on the behaviour of samples and the chemical composition and mineralogy were also investigated. The compression paths slowly converge and the gold tailings might be said to be less transitional. The gold tailing is less dependent on initial state. The loosest gold tailing is more susceptible to liquefaction and compared to other gold tailings, this sample is less susceptible to liquefaction.

Excavation of large rock caverns is a stepwise process. Whether one uses a heading and bench method or a multiple drift system, the use of excavation steps enables one to introduce the reinforcement, such as bolts or shotcrete, at the earliest possible stage. Knowing the spatial distribution and properties of rock materials and geological discontinuities, the cavern geometry and its reinforcement must be optimized. The finite element method of analysis is a powerful tool for such optimization. However, the models are only as good as their ability to account realistically for the physical attributes of the prototype and for the excavation sequence. They must include the following: - ability to model an incremental construction process. Thus requires the use of "Restart" procedures where displacements and stresses from a previous equilibrium are saved for the next step. - ability to model non-linear rock material behavior; in particular, the post-peak behavior of the rock which retains a residual strength when con-fined. The stability of many under-ground structures rests with the "broken" rock carrying significant loads. - ability to account for the non-linear behavior of geological discontinuities. These are two-fold. First, up to peak, non smooth rock joints will dilate. In a confined situation, dilation will increase joint strength by a consider-able amount (Obert, et al, Brady, 1971, Heuze,1978a), Then, beyond the peak, the joint also retains residual strength.

The Manapouri Power Project is located in New Zealand's South Island Fiordland. The project is being constructed for the New Zealand Ministry of Works. Construction began in 1963 and is scheduled' for completion in 1969. The project will divert water from the natural, glacially carved Lake Manapouri, at Elevation 580, through vertical- penstocks into an underground powerhouse 364 feet long, 127 feet high, and 59 feet wide excavated about 700 feet below ground surface and about 560 feet below the present lake level. The possible ultimate power installation will produce 700 megawatts from turbines located in the underground machine hall. The turbine flow will discharge through the 6-mile, 30-foot diameter tailrace tunnel into a fiord arm of the Tasman Sea. The rocks in the project area are primarily Paleozoic Fiordland Complex gneiss, schist, amphibolite, and marble intruded by granitic rocks and pegmatite. Shear zones have been encountered in the tunnels and machine hall. These produce water and occasionally require steel support. The machine hall arch was stabilized entirely by rock bolt reinforcement. Rock mechanics instrumentation has been used throughout the project both for pre-construction design calculations and to monitor tunnel rock loads and movements of the machine hall roof and walls. About 28 miles of the 100-mile transmission line will be constructed across glacially oversteepened slopes and debris or swamp filled valleys between the power plant and the eastern edge of the mountainous area. Steep glacially carved rock slopes and locally unstable glacial till complicated construction of the transmission line access roads.

Dynamic coal failure events remain a safety concern in underground coal mining due to their sudden nature and high fatality rate. Previous research utilized Principal Component Analysis on field samples revealing strong empirical correlations between positive failure history and low sulfur content (S) and high volatile matter (VM). Further studies indicated that bumping coals tend to be less mature and less well-cleated than non-failure coals. However, these in situ studies faced the challenge of distinguishing intrinsic coal properties from external geological and stress-related influences. This study augments previous findings through laboratory experimental testing of coal samples that included unconfined compressive strength, chemical composition analysis, and qualitative observations on cleating, combined with compositional data analysis and machine learning techniques, to isolate and understand coal’s inherent bursting capacity. These results further confirmed the relationship between coal chemistry and failure classification.

"The EarthScope Transportable Array (TA) of broadband seismometers (www.usarray.org) was deployed across southwest Wyoming from November 2007 through May 2009. During this time period the Array Network Facility (ANF, anf.ucsd.edu) detected and located a total of six seismic events near the trona-mining district. This lack of seismicity is atypical compared to coal mines employing similar mining methods. In this study, eighteen months of continuous seismic data from several nearby TA stations are reexamined using conventional and correlation-based methods to detect seismic events. Waveform cluster analysis and epicentral locations are used to discriminate between mining induced seismicity (MIS) and seismic energy generated from surface blasts at nearby coal mines. The locations and magnitudes of the 143 newly detected MIS events are compared to regional subsidence as measured by Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR). INTRODUCTION An abundance of natural resources and a favorable political climate have made southwest Wyoming home to multiple large mining operations. Among these operations are five underground trona mines located approximately 50 km west of Rock Springs, Wyoming. The trona mines employ room and pillar, longwall, and solution mining methods over an area roughly 900 km2, and produce a sizable portion of the world’s soda ash (Brown 1995). Historically, in the Rock Springs mining district, several relatively large magnitude seismic events have occurred. These events are thought to have been related to mining activity and have caused notable subsidence (Case 1997). The largest event in the region recorded by seismometers, ML 5.1, has been confirmed as the 1995 Solvay Trona Mine collapse (Pechmann et al. 1995). In addition, blasting at surface coal mines near Rock Springs produces significant amounts of seismicity; approximately 50% of all daytime seismic events in the Mountain time zone from 2007 to 2009 locate near an active surface mine in this region (Astiz et al. 2014). Much of the current research related to surface subsidence and induced seismicity focuses on wastewater impoundment (Ellsworth 2013) and hydraulic fracturing. The observable seismicity in geological injection environments is widely variable and McGarr (2014) has argued that, in such environments, the maximum amount of seismic energy that can be released is proportional to the injected volumes. Like injection environments, in extraction (mining) environments seismicity is highly variable depending on many geological and operational variables (Boltz et al. 2012; Carnec and Delacourt 2000; Fritschen 2010; Iannacchione et al. 2005; Sen 2013) and does not always correlate well spatially with subsidence, a surface expression of extraction at depth."

"There are many multi-layer coal reserves in China which account for nearly 20 to 25% of the existing proven reserves. When the coals are mined in a descending order using the fully mechanized long wall mining method, they usually have roof collapse with cavity and air leak in roadways and long wall stopes; this is especially relevant when the thickness of the rock between two coals is less than 5.0 m, as the roof stability of lower seam would be greatly reduced. At the Wuhushan Mine, such abnormal strata behavior occurs, including abnormal support stress, irregular period roof pressure, and roof falls in the face. The main reasons for these behaviors include smaller roof thickness, lower rock strength, and mining influence of upper coal; these reasons were determined by analyzing the in situ conditions. A mechanics-based model of the mine geometry was set up to study the sources of stress, the stress evolution of coal, and the discriminant method of roof stability; to obtain the smallest safe thickness of roof between two coal layers, numerical modeling was applied to analyze the relations between the roof thickness and its displacement distribution. Based on the above research, the No.1001 face was divided into easy roof caving zone (ERCZ), roof caving transition zone (RCTZ), and unlikely to roof caving zone (URCZ). In the ERCZ, comprehensive grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented; in the RCTZ, local grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented. Furthermore, a face stability control index and its range were developed in a fully mechanized face combined with mine pressure observation. After implementing this strategy, there have been no unexpected roof caving or other serious strata behaviors.INTRODUCTIONChina is the country with the largest coal production in the world, and the conditions for its coal seams are particularly complicated. For example, in China’s Datong, Wuda, Pingdingshan, and Qinshui mining areas, there are a large number of multi-layer coal seams. The thickness of these coal seams ranges from 1.3 m to more than 10 m, and the spacing between layers is from under 1.0 m to over 30 m. A common problem with these coal seams is that one layer of mining has a large impact on other coal seams, which are customarily referred to as close-distance coal seams. According to statistics, close-distance coal seams account for about 20–25% and 15–18% of China’s coal reserves and production, respectively.From the reference research of Huang (1999, 2002, 2018) and Tu (2010, 2011) we can learn that in the mining process of close-distance coal seams, downward mining is mainly used. When the upper-layer coal is mined, it has a huge mining disturbance effect on the floor (that is, the roof of the lower coal). The mining disturbance increases the mining fissure in the rockmass and weakens the strata strength. The mining problem formed by this issue is that when the lower coal is mined, problems such as difficulty in roadway support, collapse of stope roof, and difficulty in ventilation are often encountered. Especially for the mining of medium-thick coal seam groups with a layer spacing of less than 5.0 m, there has been a large-scale roof collapse accident with a fall height of more than 10.0 m. In response to such problems, domestic and foreign scholars and engineers such as Tan, Zhao, and Xiao (2010), Xie et al. (2017), and others have also carried out targeted theoretical and practical research."

Although the quantity of native sulphur associated with volcanism is large, production from such deposits represents only a very small percentage of total world production, This paper describes the location of the known deposits, the typical geology of these deposits and the nature of the sulphur mineralization. Methods of treatment are discussed and some comments are offered on the economic position of these occurences in world sulphur markets.

For many years there has been increasing pressure on mining companies, not without some justification, to design tailings storage facilities which guarantee some degree of protection against process solutions entering local groundwater and surface water flows. A fairly straightforward approach to achieving this has been to design conventional water-retaining type structures, and this has often been reinforced by the need to store large volumes of process water and seasonal run-off within the tailings facility. The conventional design uses naturally occurring geological barriers and a conventional embankment with possibly a grout curtain, or artificial barriers around the entire facility, using either imported low permeability soils, admixtures, or synthetic liners. While these approaches may achieve the primary objective of minimizing seepage, various other factors should be considered. Firstly, by depositing the tailings slurry in a sub-aqueous manner, the tailings, especially if relatively fine grained, will settle to very low densities and little or no on-going consolidation may occur over the operating life of the mine, There have been many cases where measured pore pressures within the tailings mass equal the total overburden stress, i.e., no consolidation and no strength, many years after decommissioning.

The importance of fluorspar to the United States and the world and the role it plays in industry and society extend far beyond that which is suggested by its measured production and consumption quantities and declared value. Compared to many other industrial minerals, the annual worldwide consumption of 5 million short tons valued at less than $500 million are not impressive figures. Fluorspar is made special primarily because of its status as a critical and strategic commodity; it is essential for the processing of most steels and all aluminum. It also is the raw material for the production of elemental fluorine, which plays a part in uranium refining.

The Colorado Joint Review Process (JRP), a bold step to expedite energy and mineral projects, is off and running. Blazing the trail is Amax Inc., which serve as guinea pig in JRP's development and is now test-flying the process at its Mt. Emmons molybdenum property in Gunnison County, CO. Although JRP is still in its infancy, the new permitting review process has drawn enthusiastic applause from across the resource spectrum: William K. Reilly, president of the Conservation Foundation, said JRP is "one of the most interesting projects I've seen" and called on environmentalists to monitor its progress "because it appears worthwhile." Stan Dempsey, vice president of Amax Inc., noted that of all the locales in which Amax operates, Colorado is "the only place where the complicated mine permitting scheme appears to work"-an achievement he attributes to JRP. Lynda Lee Brothers, the federal Energy Department's assistant deputy secretary of environment, reported that an extensive DOE search has not turned up "another single mechanism in all of government and private industry as good as JRP as a model for the proposed federal Energy Mobilization Board."
