Coal was discovered in South Africa in the mid 1830's. The earliest exploitation of modern times was probably in Natal where, in a letter dated 20 August 1842, a Captain Smith mentions that a wagonload of coal brought to Pietermaritzburg, was sold. Until the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and the Witwatersrand gold in 1886, coal mining satisfied a very small domestic demand. By 1889, at least four collieries were operating in the Middelburg-Witbank district, some 120 kilometres East of Johannesburg, and mining had star- ted at Vereeniging, about 50 kilometres to the South of Johannesburg. A map of South Africa is shown in Figure 1 and an enlargement of the main coal mining areas in Figure 2.

The application of geology does not cease with the discovery and delineation of a mineral resource, but continues in the calculation of the economic parameters that determine reserves. Reserve determination, reduced to essentials, is the determination of the cost of production of a mineral commodity from a resource. This cost comprises mining, processing, waste disposal, reclamation and marketing costs. Geological input is vital in the calculation of the individual cost parameters from mining to reclamation, and even has same impact on marketing. Geology thus has a critical role in the determination of reserves.

Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.

Several types of tunnel supports are being investigated experimentally and analytically at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the sponsorship of the Federal Railroad Administration, Department of Transportation. The results of work on two types will be discussed here. These are steel sets and continuous, monolithic steel-fiber-reinforced concrete liners. The latter is a model of a short length of liner that might result from a continuous slip-forming operation in a tunnel excavated with a boring machine. Tests have been performed on both types of support and analyses are being developed which will greatly broaden the scope of the test program. The objective of these studies is to improve the understanding of basic behavior of these supports, and to develop techniques for their analysis. The analyses will then be used to perform parameter studies that will lead to more rational procedures for structural design. The tests provide a check on the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate the overall behavior and modes of failure. Another part of the project is concerned with the interaction of support and medium, and thus prediction of loads for the supports. These studies are presented in greater detail in a recent report (1). A brief outline of results obtained to date are presented in this paper. The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements. REEs are used widely in high-technology, clean-energy products as well as weapon systems. China's dominant position as a producer of over 95% of the world REEs output and the world's increasing reliance on REE products have highlighted concerns about the future availability of rare earths in recent years. This paper briefly reviews the REEs world reserves, production, consumption, the impact of our heavy reliance on REEs products and China's changing policies on REE export on world supply chain.

INTRODUCTION Designers of major public works projects in the past have displayed varying degrees of environmental consciousness, and tunnel designers in particular have always had to deal with certain environmental considerations - ventilation, lighting, aesthetics - as matters of primary design. Today, however, with a widening sector of the public becoming environmentally aware, tunnels are treated as elements of whole transportation systems, and are subject to increasing environmental scrutiny. The Route H-3 tunnels in Hawaii are examples of the time, care, and detail involved in a major rock tunnel project. Project Description The Route. Interstate Route H-3 is a proposed 10-mile highway crossing the Koolau Mountain Range on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, providing a direct connection between the Pearl Harbor area and the windward part of the island in the vicinity of Kaneohe. It is designed as a dual highway with provision to accommodate mass transit. As shown on Figure 1, the project includes two sets of twin bore tunnels (through the Main Koolau Range and through Red Hill), three highway sections of which two are through largely undeveloped mountain valleys (South Halawa and Moanalua), a viaduct, and three interchanges. From the Halawa Interchange to the Kaneohe Interchange, the proposed highway consists of two 3-lane roadways separated by a median where the highway is at grade. Demand for titanium minerals and pigments increased during 1994 as the world economy expanded. Global consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) pigment grew an estimated 5% during 1994, the highest growth rate since 1989 (Industrial Minerals, April 1995, pp. 47-53). Demand for titanium mineral ores and concentrates (feedstocks) grew at a similar rate. Increased demand for Ti02 pigment was met through higher production levels. Increased demand for mineral feedstocks was met through drawdowns in inventory levels.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating the application of thiosulfate to recover gold directly from low grade refractory carbonaceous ores for the past four years. Statistical experimental methods were used to determine the effects of various leaching parameters on both gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption. Seven variables were investigated, including thiosulfate, copper, ammonia, sulfite, and sulfate concentrations, leaching time, and leaching atmosphere. This information was used in face-centered cubic (FCC) surface response experiments to define the optimum leaching conditions for a low grade ore. Two models were generated from the data to predict gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption as a function of the leaching parameters. The models predicted a gold extraction of 67 pct and reagent consumption of 2 kg [S2032/mt ore at 0.25 M S2032-, 0.0014 M Cu2+, 0.27 M NH,OH, 0.00625 M SO;-,] and leaching for 16 h. Actual tests resulted in 62 pct gold extraction with 0.93 kg S2032- consumed/mt ore. Subsequent column leaching tests have further demonstrated the viability of applying this technology to recover gold from carbonaceous ores without first pretreating the material. Gold extractions in the column tests ranged from 69 to 78 pct with thiosulfate consumption ranging from 0.4 to 5.4 kg/mt ore. These results compare to <5 pct gold extraction using standard cyanide leaching conditions.

Blockchains are one of the prominent disruptive technologies that are being implemented in several disciplines. The application of blockchains in the mining and mineral industry can provide utility for several processes especially when the industry is undertaking digital transformation. The governing principles of blockchain technology are applicable in undertaking transformation in several processes within the mining industry. This study investigates the applications of blockchain technology within the realms of the mining industry and identifies key areas of implementation. A systematic review of publications on academic platforms relating to blockchain technology in the mining industry did not retrieve a considerable number of articles. Consequently, a thorough review of white papers and articles authored by individuals on use cases within the mining industry is compiled and presented in this manuscript. This paper identifies all the potential areas within the mining industry where blockchains could provide value and improve processes through their implementation. The broad area of implementation of blockchains includes supply chain, traceability in spare parts, contract management, regulatory compliance, and cyber security.

Mineral economics interfaces the mineral sciences and engineering with finance and economics in the analysis of appropriate questions facing the minerals and energy industries. Its practitioners include those trained in the earth sciences; mining, petroleum, and geological engineering; metallurgy and mineral preparation; as well as finance, information systems, economics, and statistics-most usefully in one or more combinations. Allowing for some overlap, three general areas may be identified: evaluation, economic analysis, and resource appraisal. Evaluation begins with mine investment analysis (exemplified by Gentry and O&apos;Neil, 1984) and process costing, for which the STRAMM Handbook (Anon., 1977) provides a well-known basis for mining and beneficiation. But it extends from property appraisal, often used for the determination of taxes and royalties, through the determination and comparison of transport costs (e.g., Richer and Soo, 1977), and to benefit/cost analyses of externalities. Economic analysis, the subject of this section, is displayed in rigor and extent both theoretically and as applied to commodity classes in Vogely (1985), but it is implicit though apparent throughout Lefond (1983). The text edited by Vogely places minerals in their aggregative context with economic growth and trade, proceeds to the theoretical analysis of minerals and their markets, analyzes the structure and performance of the major mineral sectors, and concludes with policy issues: fuel, nonfuel, and environmental. Resource appraisal employs quantitative methods for the estimation of mineral and energy resources. It moves through geologic, geophysical, and geochemical properties to the identification of estimation procedures for mineral endowment and for the economic measure of stocks and flows of specific minerals (Harris, 1984). An insufficient hydrologic data base exists for most large and small coal basins in Alaska owing to the lack of need in the past to collect data. The runoff process is insufficiently understood which is complicated by specifically northern phenomenon, and the lack of understanding of hydrologic relationships in permafrost environment. This paper presents an understanding of the hydrologic effects of frozen ground and presents methods by which the influence of surface mining upon the hydrologic balance can be analyzed.

Technology plays an ever-increasing role in improving the safety and efficiency of mining operations. Laser scanning and photogrammetry are two useful methods for capturing 3D digital representations of real world objects. While both technologies have been applied to the mining industry in numerous ways, the practical applications in an operating underground limestone mine has been tested for this paper, including for visualization and site characterization. Each technology is capable of creating highly detailed geospatial point clouds, but are all point clouds created equal? This paper presents a comparison of a laser scan and photogrammetry of a limestone pillar and addresses the strengths and limitations of each method for creating digital models of operating underground limestone mines. INTRODUCTION The United States crushed stone business is a ~$14 billion per year industry representing 1,430 companies which operate 3,782 mining operations across the 50 states. In 2017 alone, 1.33 billion tons of crushed stone was produced with 76% used predominately for road construction and repairs, but also for the production of cement, lime, chemical and agricultural uses. Over 70% of domestic crushed stone producers source their material from limestone and dolomite deposits, with currently only 82 mines (2%) operating underground (USGS, 2018). Underground mining requires a different technical skillset, and poses great challenges for production that must be both safe and economical. Therefore, there are many risks that an operation must mitigate in order to produce underground limestone. Some of the challenges in underground limestone mining involve geological hazards that are unique to the rest of the industry. The geologic features such as faults and weaknesses can be difficult to assess in a production environment (NIOSH, 1998). The consequences of failure due to improperly designed underground mining ground support systems, such as from a roof failure, are not only life threatening for the miners themselves, but can easily shut down an entire mining operation.

The Revenue Act of 1926 provided for five simple categories of natural resources to have the benefit of depletion allowances. In the 1947 Revenue Act, the number was increased to twenty-five, and in the 1951 Revenue Act to fifty-four. Of this number, fourteen were allowed 5 per cent; nine, 10 per cent; twenty-nine, 15 per cent; one, 23 per cent; and one (oil and gas), 27.5 per cent. The 1951 Revenue Act created a host of difficulties, including application of the "end- use criterion" and determination of the commonly accepted meaning of such terms as limestone, dolomite, chemical- and metallurgical-grade limestone, marble, calcium carbonates, and magnesium carbonates. Dolomite, for example, was listed at 10 per cent depletion allowance, but without definition. In the great amount of litigation growing out of the 1951 Revenue Act and its administration, it became essential to understand the derivation and subsequent usage of these common geologic terms. One thing that became clear was that our definitions changed significantly between the time that the 1951 Revenue Act became law and the time that later cases were tried. Some geologists neglected to learn about first usages of such terms as metallurgical limestone, and about meanings that were applicable when the 1951 Revenue Act was written and passed. Legal meanings in this paper are discussed in the light of certain famous cases that have been tried and settled.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is difficult to treat due to its physicochemical characteristics, such as high pH and high heavy metal concentrations, so it causes great harm to the environment and human health. If acid mine drainage is discharged arbitrarily without treatment, it will lead to a series of environmental problems and cause long-term environmental pollution. In this paper, the source and hazards of acid mine drainage are introduced in detail. And the principle, the mechanism, the application, and basic information of the current primary technology of the treatment for acid mine drainage are comprehensively introduced and summarized. The summarized treatment technologies for acid mine drainage mainly include neutralization, sulfidization, constructed wetland method, adsorption method, microbiological method, ion exchange method, membrane technology, and microbial fuel cell technology. Also, the primary technology of treatment for acid mine drainage is systematically compared and evaluated. Moreover, some suggestions on the development direction of water treatment technology in the future are put forward. This paper provides a scientific reference for scientific and technical works to treat acid mine drainage.

Copper has been mined in the Philippines since at least as early as the Ming dynasty (1368 A.D. to 1644 A. D.). The principal source areas of this early production were in Camarines Norte (Paracale), in the Mountain Province, which now boasts the largest number of Philippine porphyry copper deposits, in Masbate and in Surigao, The Spanish Era began in 1521. Although they were primarily interested in gold, the Spaniards operated several copper mines including the San Remigio mine on Panay and the Lepanto mine in northern Luzon, beginning in 1842 and 1865 respectively. Prior to World War II most of the Philippine copper production was supplied by these same two mines together with the Hixbar mine, Rapu Rapu Island which began operation in 1939. The Hixbar and San Remigio mines are cupriferous pyrite deposits and the Lepanto is a vein-¬form replacement deposit (Kinkel et al. ,I 1956). No significant copper production was derived from porphyry copper occurrences prior to world War II.

One of the most commonly employed set of calculations in mill design and research is the material balance, known in wet beneficiation plants, as an Ore and Water Balance. For mill designers, the balance is one of the principal requirements in determining the proper size of launders, pipelines, process equipment, etc. In process development, one of the major goals is the establishment of an optimum balance. The usual procedure for calculating a material balance involves a manual technique utilizing reference tables, pre -obtained data, and a slide rule or desk calculator. With these, the engineer must perform a series of calculations which are repetitious in nature and time consuming. Figure I is the flowsheet of the grinding and flotation circuits for a copper concentrator. The initial ore and water balance was calculated manually and required approximately 24 manhours. Later, a number of changes were made in the balance, each of which required an average of 8 manhours.

In recent years, the need has become more and more accute for a high capacity, high intensity, wet magnetic separator for the concentration of finely ground, paramagnetic minerals. As a result of this increased interest, extensive test work has been conducted at our Central Test Laboratory, and the basic design for such a separator has been established. Three units have been developed to comprise a full line of this equipment: (a) Series 4L (laboratory), Figure I, is manually operated to permit maximum flexibility and precise control of each variable, with a capacity of 4 gallons per minute. (b) Series LOCC, Figure II, functions by automatically controlled feeding and washing cycles, and has a capacity of approximately 1.0 tons per hour. (c) Series 200CF, Figure III, basically consists of an annular pole box, rotating through the high intensity magnetic field. This unit has a capacity of approximately 20 tons per hour.

The creation of automatic methane concentration control systems presupposes the use, as a control factor, of the air rates in workings and in mine as a whole. These systems present a complicated set of computers and software, including as major components the following - systems for detecting methane concentration and air rate; - telemechanics systems; - programs and means of data processing; - programs and means of air rate control in workings and main fan capacity control. The paper analyses the experience of development and exploitation of automatic methane control system in gassy mines of the USSR Donetz coal basin. Much attention is given to the study of technological factors influence upon aerogasdynamic process using automatic methane control system.

The sand dunes which line the east shore of Lake Michigan resulted after the last, or Wisconsin, glacial period in Michigan. Melt-water streams carried vast quantities of glacial debris to the near shore areas of predecessors to Lake Michigan. As the lake levels receded, these vast quantities of sand were exposed to the prevailing westerly winds, which was the last major process that acted upon the sand and resulted in the formation of the dunes. 1 These dunes are one of the significant natural resources within the state. Michigan dune sands supply about 90% of the foundry sand used in the automotive industry, and 40% of the foundry sand used 2 for all purposes within the United States. The deposits owe their importance to the following factors: grain size distribution, grain shape, mineral composition and location with respect to the foundry sand market. In spite of their economic significance these I deposits are in jeopardy through legislative preemption.
