Sphalerite is commonly floated in an alkaline environment and under such conditions the overall activation mechanism is obscured by the hydrolysis of Cu2+ and precipitation of Cu(OH)2. Electrokinetic and kinetic flotation tests show that the activation of sphalerite is a two-stage process; the activation products formed on the surface of sphalerite in near neutral and in alkaline solutions in the first rapid activation stage are "flotation-inactive". These layers, when formed in an alkaline solution, are unstable and are transformed into the "flotation-active" form in the second stage. However, the surface layers formed during activation in alkaline environment by copper in the presence of lead ions are very stable and even after a long conditioning time the flotation rate is not improved. Consequently, while both Cu2+ and Pb2+ activate sphalerite flotation, quite unpredictable effects may result when both are present in the solution.

This paper initially was to be on the design, construction and operation of the Lucky Friday mill. However, this subject has been pretty well covered in some of the mining publications in the past few years - specifically Mining Congress Journal for April, 1961 and Mining World for March, 1962- : In order to avoid too much repetition, we decided to present in this paper a comparison of the Lucky Friday mill constructed in 1959, and the Mayflower mill built by us in 1962. During the past three years Hecla Mining Company has constructed two relatively small mills: The Lucky Friday mill at Mullan, Idaho 750 T/day; and the Mayflower mill at Heber, Utah - 450 T/day. These mills were engineered, designed and constructed by Hecla, using principally our own personnel, with very little outside (contractor) labor employed. This paper presents a comparison of some of the interesting features of these mills, and where differences occur, it discusses the reasons for the various differences. It compares such points as the testing program, physical layout of the plant, construction costs, the grinding section, the flotation section, tailings disposal, metallurgy, recovery, grades, operating costs, etc. To help illustrate, and to compare these features, we will project pairs of slides showing each of the two mills. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been developing the mechanical roof pulling technique as a method for evaluating the effectiveness and the comparative advantages and disadvantages of various roof bolting systems, based on the characteristic responses of bolted nine roofs to a prescribed external loading system. Preliminary experiments were conducted in the Bureau's Safety Research Coal Mine using a 12-foot and a 16-foot-span test rig. The experiments have proved the capability of the test rigs and suggested the viability of the test method. This paper summarizes the test concept and the experimental results.

This paper aims at the application of quantitative criteria for evaluating the mineral potential of square cells representing areas in terrains being explored at a reconnaissance level. The assumption is made here that the evaluation methods used by an expert economic geologist can be organized into geological models for establishing associations within imaged areas, that correspond to pixels with similar characteristics. UTM-registered multiple data sets have been constructed which include seasonal LANDSAT 2 and 4 images, SEASAT scenes, selected airborne radar images, digitized aeromagnetic, gravity, bedrock geology and topographic elevation maps. The area of interest is located in the Bathurst Inlet, District of MacKenzie, N.W.T., where a preliminary mineral potential evaluation was performed by the Geological Survey of Canada to assess its suitability for a national park. The multiple data sets described in this paper can be used for many studies at different resolutions, for comparing processing methods in remote sensing and, most importantly, for evaluating the physical and spatial relationships between the different images in registered data sets.

The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

Geostatistical estimation techniques were customized to enable forecast of production figures at the Silver Bell uranium mine (Uravan District). Surface drill hole data were used to provide a block model of kriged estimators of average uranium grades. The recoverable figures, such as ore-waste ratio and ore grade, are then deduced from regressive curves previously obtained from underground information and production data. Cross-validations of the entire model were performed and were found positive.

Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System project final design began in 1973. The Section A of the planned Phase I is scheduled to go into revenue service in late 1982. The subway line structures include earth tunnels, rock tunnels and cut-and-cover structures. Final designs were performed by both the DMJM/KE staff and by outside subconsultants. This paper deals with Section A of the program. (Fig. 1.) The overall program cost for Section A is estimated to be $721 million. The cost for construction and owner furnished equipment is estimated to be $600 million, including contingency and escalation to time of construction. The remaining amounts are for right-of-way, design, construction management and agency (MTA) costs. The Section A line structures, including station lengths, are divided as shown in Table 1. [ ]

INTRODUCTION The tailings, or solid waste, remaining after uranium has been extracted from an ore and the liquid wastes associated with it contain both radioactive and other substances which, if released to the environment, may have a detrimental impact on man and his environment. Although the radioactivity of the waste is of natural origin, the mining and milling process results in bringing the radioactive ore to the surface, changing its chemical and physical form, increasing its mobility and, therefore, enhancing the potential radiological exposure to man. Exposure to radionuclides released from a tailings impoundment, while small as applied to any one generation, can be made large by counting far into the future, large enough to be the dominant source of exposure from the nuclear fuel cycle, Cunningham (1978). Increasingly it is being found that where the prime concern was initially the radionuclide releases, the release of other pollutants and contaminants may be of equal or greater concern. While there is a definite benefit, at least to present generations, resulting from the recovery of uranium, current and long-term concerns require that consequential present and future releases be kept as low as is reasonably achievable. Design practice, to minimize this release, is currently passing through a technical revolution; precipitated by public and institutional concerns. New techniques and methods are, therefore, being actively sought and continuously implemented. Because of the complexity of the pollutant release mechanisms and the sitespecific nature of each impoundment site and tailings product, a wide variety of site selection and design options have been implemented or considered. It is often possible to design a number of satisfactory tailings disposal schemes which differ widely in nature and cost. Coal-fired power plants in the U. S. produce approximately 20 million metric tons of Hue-gas desulfurization sludge every year. The sludge mainly consists of calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate. This can be converted to synthetic gypsum, which in principle could be a marketable commodity. However, many Hue-gas scrubbers produce sludges that do not meet the quality requirements of the gypsum industry, and so their sludges must be landfilled as a waste. If a suitable method can be developed for removing certain objectionable impurities from the sludge, it will then be possible to market the material instead of landfilling it. A sludge from a natural-oxidation scrubber was characterized, and the main contaminant was found to be calcium carbonate from unreacted limestone. Based on the particle size and the characteristics of the material, froth flotation was considered as a method for purifying the material. Since no flotation studies have ever been carried out to separate calcium carbonate particles from calcium sulfite or calcium sulfate particles, it was first necessary to select a suitable collecting reagent. Based on Zeta-potential studies, the most suitable reagent was found to be an octadecylamine-octadecylguanidine complex. Results are presented for flotation of calcium carbonate from scrubber sludge using this reagent, in a reverse-flotation process. The best results were obtained when the sludge was first pre-cleaned using a water-only cyclone to remove unfloatable coarse limestone, followed by froth flotation to remove fine limestone.

"A beautiful America will require the effort of government at every level, of business, and of private groups. Above all it will require the concern and action of individual citizens, alert to danger, determined to improve the quality of their surroundings, resisting blight, demanding and building beauty for themselves and their children." "Improvement of our environment" has become a cause much like "motherhood". The increased awareness of the public concerning this subject makes it most unpopular for anyone to be involved in anything that seemingly is detrimental to our environment. And this awarement goes far beyond our biggest pollution problem in America - the distribution of paper, abandoned automobiles, beer cans and other garbage by our enlightened society along every city, highway, trout stream, river and mountain in America. In fact, the greatest awarement comes because of the "sensational" reporting and writing in our various national communication media, wherein the same voting citizens who so generously distribute their refuse about the countryside are emotionally aroused and duped into transferring what is truly a national problem onto the shoulders of a few industries - notably and particularly the mineral extraction industry. Certainly mankind is more and more stumbling over his own garbage daily, a fact that is easier to sell a citizen of one of our large cities than a resident of the wide open spaces of the west. Yet even in the Rocky Mountain states, the "Land of Sky Blue Waters", the "Big Sky Country", and particularly in Salt Lake valley smog is not unknown. Pollution and littering have become problems that need to be faced squarely. In North Dakota alone it has been estimated that one section of farm land each year flows down the mighty Missouri and the greatest producer of sediment is now reported to be the highway department.

The presence of organic materials in gold ores cyanidation. The presence of organic materials interferes with gold extraction by The carbon contained in the ore has been shown to adsorb gold cyanide complex from solution. Removal of the carbon content by roasting or chemical oxidation prior to cyanidation results in gold extractions of 85 to 95 pct. This paper by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, discusses how the mineralogy of the carbonaceous gold ores affects gold recovery by cyanidation. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of roasting and chemical treatment to render the ore amenable to cyanidation.

El Abra has mining concessions granting the right to exploit minerals in more than 130 km2 (32,122 acres). SCM El Abra owns “rights to occupy” the surface of these claims. The company also owns the surface rights over the process plant area and over land conveyor route. The project has procured all material easements relating to the mine area, processing facilities and access rights of way. Engineering, procurement and construction Figure 1 sets out the development and construction schedule for the project. Development is already well under way. As of early January 1996, about 70% of the project was complete and more than 80% of the capital expenditures were committed.

This is the case history of how two nearby plants in Southwest Virginia solved their water clarification problems. While the solutions should not be considered applicable industry-wide, the methods used in arriving at the answers deserve consideration. When Clinchfield's Moss No. 2 Preparation Plant, the first ever built in Tiller Seam coal, was started in the fall of 1956, the clays in the raw coal soon posed a flocculation problem, Laboratory sedimentation tests were initiated; and as a result, lime was adopted as the flocculant for the clays, With lime, a pH of 11.2 was required. As the plant tonnage increased, it became evident that the amount of coal fines produced in the mining and preparation was greater than had been estimated and that the 90-foot thickener was inadequate in providing sufficient settling time to effect a clarified overflow for reuse. Testing showed that Separan 26105 (NP10)1/, when used with lime, was the most satisfactory coal flocculant available,

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto the Cu2S was identified as the double salt Cu(DPG)2SO4,.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research of the past sixteen years on three distinct methods of probing into solid rock. The first method is to use radar of the appropriate frequency. The second method is to use sonar. The third method is of recent vintage and uses techniques of nonlinear sonar also known as parametric sonar. The first two concepts, that of radar and sonar, are common to most people. Very few have heard of nonlinear sonar. Each of the probing techniques were investigated in order to overcome deficiencies in the former technique. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. It should be emphasized that all of these techniques for probing (or seeing) into rock are used in mines, and generally speaking not from the surface. Only in very special cases, such as certain very dry parts of Egypt or Peru, or, for example, the surface of the moon, will these probing techniques work from the surface. The reason for the development of these probing techniques has been to alert miners to possible hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards may be (1) old (unknown) boreholes connected with high pressure water zones above, (2) fractures that might connect to the Gulf of Mexico above the mine, (3) water-filled fractures that threaten the safety of miners, or (4) the discovery of dry faults ahead that can disrupt the planning of future operations.

Introduction The need for water is fundamental to every minerals processing operation. Though this may sound rather elementary, it is one area that cannot be over- looked. Frank C. Quinn in his paper entitled "Water Is Water Is Water" (1967) said, "but it isn't as simple as that. Very often research is slowed down and production is hampered because of a lack of appreciation for the behavior of water." The quantity of water needed for any operation is determined from bench and pilot plant testing. The quality required by the process for both fresh and reuse water is also established during these two testing phases. Quinn's statements are true whether the process involves the paper industry, the minerals industry, or any other industry. It is not the author's intent to cover water quality, quantity, or re- cycle in specific terms, but to provide the reader with a general outline of the topic with reference to several valuable sources of information. The first part of the chapter will cover several of the areas that have been de- tailed by others and also provide a list of reference sources. The references at the end of the chapter are not all inclusive but will provide a good starting point. In the second part of the chapter, a detailed description, with flowsheet illustrations, is pro- vided on the evolution of the reclaim (reuse) water system at the Tilden concentrator. Mineral Industry Water Needs Beresford and Edler (1978) surmnarized the minerals industry's need for water this way: "minerals are necessary to a modern complex technological society. The minerals industry, while its water needs are relatively minor compared to large users such as agriculture, nevertheless requires a large quantity of water to carry out daily operations from mining to final product refining." In 1973 total water use in the United States was estimated at 15.14 billion cubic meters (4 trillion gallons) for the minerals industry. Of this, about 69% was recirculated within the system. In 1982 Watt and Horton stated that the percent of recycled water in the minerals industry had improved to 73%, showing the minerals industry is an efficient user of water and that steady improvement in water recycling is something the minerals industry can look to with pride. The percent of water needed by the United States' minerals industry was estimated in 1962 to be about 2% of the total water required by industry

Mine design and selection of ore processing capacity depend upon a correct estimate of the grade-tonnage distribution. The estimate must reflect what can be recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada, USA, is a gold and silver mine. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and the log-affine variance correction. From this model, the grade-tonnage distribution was constructed. Optimal pits were generated by utilizing the distribution, and the results were compared with the pit generated by ordinary kriging. Studies indicate that the proposed method for multi-metal recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than ordinary kriging in terms of both tons and the grade. Using recoverable reserves for mine design will maximize global recovery of mineral resources.

Bituminous coal dust was repeatedly placed into one lung lobe of anesthetized Macaca nemestrina monkeys using a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope. Radiographs taken at 15 day intervals showed a focal radiographic density after 90 days time when a total of 1 gram of dust had been instilled. The radiographic density progressed slightly in size until 12 months by which time 3 grams of dust had been instilled and the animals were euthanized. At necropsy, the only significant gross lesion detected was the focal black pulmonary lesion located at the dust instillation site. Histologically, the lesion was composed of coal dust laden macrophages located primarily within interstitial tissue and interspersed with a slight amount of reticulum and connective tissue fibers. The distribution of coal dust was limited to the instillation site in the right caudal lung lobe based on radiographic, gross and histologic examination. Bronchoalveolar lavage of both right and left caudal lung lobes was performed 8 times during the 12 month long experiments without significant complications. More macrophages were found in lavage fluid from the right lung than the left, and most macrophages from right lung contained coal dust particles. Based upon a limited physical examination and complete blood count at 15 day intervals the animals remained normal during the experiment. We conclude that the primate lung's response to focal experimental bituminous coal dust resulted in a marked focal increase in pulmonary alveolar macrophages, which can be recovered regularly in high numbers by bronchoalveolar lavage. The model described has significant potential for investigating the pathogenesis of various respirable dust-induced pneumoconioses, for evaluation of new therapeutic approaches, and for refining experimental and clinical diagnostic applications of bronchoalveolar lavage.
