Examining a typical curriculum for mineral process engineers shows that traditional subjects remain important, namely, engineering, earth and basic sciences, mathematics and mineral proc¬essing technology. However, Table I shows additional subjects that may be woven into a modern curriculum, because of micro- and macro-engineering advances over the years. The ways to incorporate these subjects into the curriculum will vary from school to school. Such changes are in response to evolutionary technological and political needs as determined by society and business. The last time Mining Engineering presented an issue with a special focus on Canadian Mining (ME, August 2008 pp. 28 to 40) things were going well. A feature story took a look at Xstrata?s Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury and the booming Canadian oil sands were discussed at length. Potash prices were soaring, large diamonds were being found and British Columbia was launching plans to find more workers. How things have changed in six short months. What began as a mortgage crisis grew into a credit crisis, then mutated into a financial crisis, that has taken its toll on the value of bonds, loans, stocks, real estate and commodities. Miners that were flying high on unprecedented commodity prices six months ago have begun scaling back with delays, shut downs and layoffs as they struggle to survive this most recent economic downturn.

Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

Large - scale tests at the Polish Safety in Mines Institute /established in 1925 as "Barbara" Experimental mine/ performed in underground and surface experimental galleries, simulating conditions in roadways in mines, are the basic source of knowledge about development and propagation of explosions. Investigations up to 1973 were performed under the Institute's former research director Professor W.B. Cybulski s supervision, whose handbook concerning combating of coal dust explosions in collieries has been also published in the U.S. (2), and are continued until now. For investigating explosions the "Barbara" Mine disposes of 170 m /7.5 sq m/, 200 m /5 sq m/ and 400 m /7.5 sq m/ underground gallieries as well as of 10 m, 25 m, 44 m and 100 m surface galleries. For example, in the 200 m gallery more than 5200, and in the 400 m gallery - more than 2200 test explosions have been performed. Basing on determination of explosion hazard in roadways in collieries and on data of scientific research performed at the Safety in Mines Institute, the strategy of combating the explosion hazard in mines was elaborated; it includes mainly diminishing of coal duet. deposition in roadways, and -because of the possible inefficiency of this safety means in some roadways in mechanized collieries -- the introduction of three additional defence lines against coal dust explosions. It should be mentioned that at the "Barbara" Mine the problem of coal dust explosion initiation was elaborated as contract work for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The main aim of this paper is to discuss some aspects of methods and measures for combating coal dust explosion hazard in highly mechanized mines in the Polish mining industry where in some roadways explosible coal dust is present, but it is not the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of methods and measures for diminishing the make-up of coal dust and coal dust deposition rates in roadways.

During the planning phase of the fine coal cleaning addition at the Gary Coal Preparation Plant, careful consideration was directed toward the problem of minus 48 mesh refuse disposal. The plant flow sheet included wet screening the raw coal at 1/4 inch, pumping the minus 1/4 inch raw coal to bowl desiltors for desliming, and then cleaning the disliked raw coal on tables. The material to be removed from the circuit as minus 48 mesh refuse consisted of the minus 100 mesh desiltor overflow thickened in two 120 foot diameter thickeners and minus 1 mm screened from the table refuse. Later a flotation plant was added to recover coal from the desiltor overflow, and a classifier replaced the screens to make a sharper size separation of the table refuse at 48 mesh Today the minus 48 mesh refuse at Gary consists of thickened flotation tailings and thickened spiral classifier overflow. The transportation of large quantities of fine wet refuse filter cake mixed with jig and table refuse over existing conveying equipment would have been neither dependable nor economical. 12.1-BASIC AND PARAMETRIC CRITERIA IN THE SELECTION, DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF UNDERGROUND MINING SYSTEMS STEFAN H. BOSHKOV AND FRED D. WRIGHT The criteria governing the selection of an underground mining system relate to several factors the importance of which varies with geographic location, the state of development of the industrial technology, the economic climate in the Nation and, perhaps, in the world-all these as functions of time. Thus, the best choice of a mining method depends upon sets of definable and undefinable values for numerous factors that may be considered fixed at the precise point in time. Subsequent changes in economic and/or technological developments may necessitate modification or complete revision of the existing mining system. A classification of criteria for selecting a mining system must be based on the broadest definitions. Specific cases may present simple solutions or pose very intricate questions, the answers to which are frequently based on judgment rather than explicit logically reasoned and derived results. Specific criteria may be of negligible consequence in some instances and of overriding importance in other cases. It would be foolhardy to attempt to point out, in the limited space available, all possible variations and interplay of factors, as well as to define the setting in which this interplay can take place. The reader is, therefore, referred to the case histories described in the subsequent parts of this section where actual practice will point out the variability of the problems encountered in the selection of a mining method. A popular thesis suggests that the proper approach to selecting the method of mining should be rooted in the inverse solution, whereby the limitations of the various methods in use serve as criteria to eliminate most of these methods from consideration in the specific case. This narrows the ultimate selection to one or perhaps two most appropriate methods. At this stage, a critical comparison analysis will lead to the ultimate choice. Although such a negative approach un¬questionably is valid in discarding obviously inapplicable mining systems from consideration, it falls short in defining the best system, which in practice quite often turns out to be a variation of a textbook standard, or a combination of two or more such standards. Because the deployment of capital and manpower over a long-term commitment closely follows the selection of the mining system, the decision-maker can well afford to spend a great deal of time and effort in evolving the optimum solution for the peculiarities of his specific case. Within the basic engineering tenets of economy and safety to which the design of a mining system must adhere lie numerous factors of constraint which may be grouped, somewhat arbitrarily but for ease of discussion, into several categories. The criteria that enter into the choice of a mining method derive from the following groups of factors: 1. The shape, size and spatial position of the ore deposit.

The mineral processing industry supplies raw materials to a wide variety of manufacturing sectors. Large companies such as Ford, Microsoft, and Johnson&Johnson have pledged carbon neutral supply chains in the coming decades, leaving suppliers to reevaluate their energy sources [1–3]. National Renewable Energy Lab [4] has partnered with over 700 organizations with similar goals in mind. The energy needs are broad in scope in the mineral processing industry. Generation IV of nuclear reactors, which is currently under development in both the private and public sector includes a class called microreactors like the small modular reactor XEnergy plans to install at Dow Chemical’s Gulf Coast facility by 2023 [5]. As the name implies, these are smaller than the utility scale nuclear power plants in operation today, and are intended to be more versatile. A specific reactor core design, along with modules could be selected to fit a certain application without needing to design a greenfield power plant. Basic water cooled designs could easily supply shaft work, electricity, and low grade process heat to a facility. More advanced designs, such as molten-salt-reactors and high-temperaturegas-reactors can achieve higher temperatures needed for ore roasting. Similarly, these reactors could produce hydrogen by high temperature electrolysis to use as combustion fuel and reducing atmosphere in blast furnaces.

Arizona embraces portions of two major western-U.S. physiographic-geologic provinces and a smaller, local one. These exert fundamental control over the geologic framework and associated earth-material resources and potential. The Mogollon Rim diagonally crosses the State and separates the Colorado Plateau Province to the northeast from the Transition Zone and Basin and Range Province to the southwest. More than 90 percent of the population, production of nonfuel minerals, agricultural land, and water resources are in the Basin and Range part of the State. In 1981 Arizona was ranked number one in the Nation with respect to the value ($2.56 billion) of nonfuel-mineral production. About 8.2 percent of this amount ($212.9 million) can be attributed to nonmetallic (industrial) materials. Although a diversity of nonmetallic substances is produced and some are exported, the bulk is utilized within the State and is directly related to market growth. Since 1950 there has been a fourfold increase in Arizona's population, a concomitant twelvefold jump in sand-gravel production (tons), and a twentyfold increase in "stone" production. New industries developed during this time include cement, salt (and storage of liquid petroleum gas products in solution cavities in salt), zeolite, hydrofrac sand, vitrified clay pipe, crushed marble products (teed additive, pool sand, roofing granules, etc.), and "rock" wool. Most of these newer industries serve out-of-State as well as in-State markets. In 1981 at least 225 industrial mineral or rock deposits were being worked to produce about 10 tons of material per Arizona resident per year. In 1980 the relative values of basic industrial minerals produced in the State, by major group, were cement and lime (51.6 percent); gravel (26.5 percent); sand (11.8 percent); stone (4.6 percent); and others (5.5 percent). Detailed knowledge of the nonmetallic rock-and-mineral content of most Arizona ranges and basins is lacking. Exploration opportunities in this sun-belt growth region appear encouraging.

In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) held its fifth annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada earlier this year. “The Minerals Industry: Responding to the Global Challenge” was the first MEMS conference to be held outside of the United States. About 125 mining- and minerals-related professionals attended. The MEMS program included six sessions and three distinguished speaker addresses. The session topics included: “Minerals in the Macro economy: Development in Demand,” “Trends in Global Metals Supply: The Producers’ Challenge,” “Global Environmental Issues: Policy Perspectives,” “Global Environmental Issues: Quantitative Analysis” and “Minerals in the CIS: Phoenix or Albatross?” A student session was also offered. It provided a competition for monetary awards for outstanding papers.

The removal of oxyanions of arsenic present in mine process water and drinking water to a regulatory level (i.e. below 50 ppb) is a challenging problem. Conventional water treatment methods presently used for controlling arsenic have several drawbacks and limited success. A new adsorbent (LS™) developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, has strong specificity for both arsenate and arsenite species present in process waters. The adsorbent in very selective to oxyanions of arsenic and competition of other indifferent ions is minimum. Water samples from different sources were tested and arsenic was successfully removed to below 50 ppb. This paper describes both batch and packed column tests conducted in the laboratory as well as at the plant sites using LS™.

The decision to hold parallel conferences dealing with hazardous waste and mining waste grew out of the conviction that there were advantages to having personnel serving the two groups talk to each other, as both groups develop cost-effective and environmentally-protective solutions to present and future waste-disposal problems. There has been a certain amount of "reinventing the wheel" which could have been avoided by a better dialog between the two groups. The intent of holding the two parallel conferences is to allow for networking, to minimize future needless redundant effort. The opening session panel speakers represent expertise from both industries; I feel honored to speak as one with a history of serving both groups as a specialist in the subsurface behavior of heavy metals.

The Phase I electrowinning system at KCGM's Fimiston Operation utilised the well proven technology of electrowinning precious metal values onto steel wool followed by calcining and direct smelting to bullion. The above process, while reliable and successful, was to some extent labour intensive. The Williams Mine in Ontario, Canada had published conditions under which precious metal values are electrowon onto woven stainless steel and directly removed using high pressure sprays. The current paper describes the testwork which was carried out to check the applicability of the Williams criteria to KCGM eluates arising from the elution of highly loaded carbon from the calcine circuit and lowly loaded carbon from the float tails circuit. Information is also given on the commissioning and opera­tional experience which occurred.

Automatic digital phase imaging should yield unbiased and representative characterization of gold ores. However, this is not a simple task due to low gold grades, fine grain size, possible complex mineralogy, nugget effect, etc. A critical test was done by two methods, using the same sections of a gold-rich ore: with an optical (OM) and with an electron microscope (EM). In general, the two methods are consistent and useful for ore processing. There are some minor differences e.g. the detection of very fine gold grains is enhanced by EM.

Boliden Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, annually treats some 11-12 million tons of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. Its first flotation plant was established in the early thirties for the complex Boliden ore. Since then, the number of mines and plants has gradually increased. Considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low-grade ores. The development of concentration has mainly been directed toward the arts of grinding and flotation. During the forties and fifties, open-stage fine crushing followed by two-stage grinding in rod and ball mills with cyclone classification was successfully introduced and used throughout the plants. The increasing cost of grinding media led to studies of an autogenous grinding technique as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, with a. number of ores tested for pebble grinding. In 1956 a new pilot plant was built, with equipment installed for the continuous testing of pebble grinding and, later, for primary autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore. The intensive test work showed that pebble grinding was feasible in almost all of the plants. At this early stage of testing, however, the merits of autogenous grinding could not be fully evaluated. As a. consequence the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems were converted to rod mill/pebble mill systems whereever possible. Gold continued to be the primary focus of minerals exploration worldwide during 1995. Other targets, though, included primary diamonds and base metals, especially copper deposits amenable to solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) processing. The discovery of nickel, copper and cobalt at Voisey Bay in Labrador, Canada was an unusual surprise. Meanwhile, exploration geochemistry continues to evolve to meet new challenges. The major event in this category during 1995 was the17th International Geochemical Exploration Symposium (IGES) held in Townsville, Queensland, Australia in May. The meeting was sponsored by the Association of Exploration Geochemists, which celebrated its 25thanniversary of service to the mineral industry, and the Economic Geology Research Unit of James Cook University, Townsville.

Geochemical laboratories are commonly criticized by geologists about poor analytical reproducibility and erratic anomaly patterns, especially when gold and trace metals from resistant minerals are reported. Geochemical analysis in mineral exploration is a compromise between high productivity on the one hand, imposed by large numbers of samples, and analytical precision and accuracy on the other. However, the physical properties of resistant minerals, such as cassiterite, gold, beryl, chromite, zircon and others, interfere with both of these requirements. Therefore, the degree of sample homogeneity that can reasonably be achieved in sampling and sample preparation must be considered. Subsequently, the understanding of its effects on analytical data quality and the consequences on data interpretation will provide a basis for understanding the problems common to exploration as an interdisciplinary science. Complaints about poor and inadequate analytical performance are not confined to exploration geochemistry. They are a common feature in mining and metallurgy and wherever sampling and analysis of "grains" are concerned - the "nugget" or "grain size effect." The "grain size" effect Poor analytical reproducibility is normal for gold and a well-defined group of other elements usually found in resistant placer minerals. Those who use and interpret geochemical data must realize and appreciate the chemical, the physicochemical, the physical and the mineralogical properties of the elements and their minerals. Especially for the "placer" minerals and their elements, such comprehensive interpretation is crucial. The most important factor to consider is the behavior of a mineral and its metal component(s) during weathering and their integration into the sampled medium, in exploration mostly sediments and soils. (Data interpretation for samples of water, gas, to a certain extent rock, follows different patterns.) A mineral may be chemically and physically stable or it may easily disintegrate physically or decompose chemically, or any combination of such processes, at varying degrees. The breakdown products, in turn, may or may not, interreact with the environment. If the nature of an element or a mineral predestines it for a heterogenous distribution in the sample medium, then nature, size and number of grains likely to occur should be considered in relation to the sample portion taken for analysis. This allows the estimation of their effect on analytical precision and accuracy. Elaborate and sophisticated statistical calculations exist on this subject. But these approaches do not cope with the complexity of the natural surface environment. The miner alogical, chemical and environmental behavior of elements and minerals can be estimated but not calculated. However, the mineral grain sizes and their influence on analytical precision can be precisely calculated if certain conditions, assumptions and idealizations are made. If the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of minerals and elements are understood, such calculations demonstrate the grain (or nugget) effects that mineral properties and (geo)chemical behavior of minerals and elements cause on the precision and accuracy of geochemical analysis through their influence on sample homogeneity. Two other factors that influence the sample homogeneity and the nugget effect are the efficiency of sample preparation and the sample portion taken for analysis. In this way, certain element- or mineral-specific parameters can be established as a guide for the sampling program. The information, for example, may assist in determining sampling procedures in the field, especially the sample weight to be taken for "representative samples." Also, it may help assess whether analytical data, as provided by the laboratory, are acceptable. Finally, it may help determine the approach in data interpretation. However, all such simplified calculations are based on idealized, that is, unreal assumptions and conditions. As such, they represent one extreme end on the scale of probabilities. The reality is found somewhere away from this extreme, towards homogeneity. An example from a study of an eluvial gold prospect may be given for illustration: •Original sample weight: 20 kg (44 lbs) of rock gravel, crushed and ground to -0.18 mm (-80 mesh). •Au content: 20 grains of Au, average size of about 0.5 mm3 (0.03 cu in.) each = 7.5 mg each, making a total of about 150 mg Au in the sample = 7.5 ppm Au. Assumptions •Au occurs in the sample as free, discrete grains only. •Not more than one grain, if any, goes into each sample split (analyte) portion (20 grains of 7.5 mg Au each). •Analysis of original rock sample: 100 g sample for analysis, 20 kg/100 g = 200 samples 20 samples with 1 grain each: result, - 75 ppm Au. 180 samples with no grain: result, 0 ppm Au chances 1:9 •10 g sample for analysis:

The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

Such a representation permits a quantitative evaluation and monitoring of the separation processes in different sections of a processing plant, and gives an overall separation efficiency of the plant.
