Notwithstanding the fact that unsaturated fatty acids are used in preference to saturated acids for most flotation purposes, information regarding their collecting properties is sketchy. Keck, Eggleston, and Lowry1 reported in 1939 that the collecting power of fatty acids on hematite decreased in the order of oleic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, and caprylic acid. Keck and Jasberg2 described in the same year that "unsaturated oleic acid with 18 carbon atoms was a better collector than saturated stearic acid" for floating magnetite. Gaudin and Cole3 stated in 1953 that the double bonds of oleic and linoleic acid were not oxidized during the flotation of fluorite, whereas the double bonds of linolenic acid were measurably altered even after one single flotation step. In August, 1953, Hukki and Vartiainen4 concluded that the collecting power of palmitic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids on ilmenite, magnetite, pyrite, and rutile increased with an increasing number of double bonds in the acid molecules. This was subsequently proved to be generally true for the flotation of mapganese5, phosphate6, and magnetite7. The above cited literature indicates that, prior to the present paper, only about ten minerals were tested with pure unsaturated fatty acids as collectors.

Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal (1) research on the subject is still in an early stage of development (2,3,4,5,6,7) To the author's knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes - particularly anthracite lithotypes. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods, It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published (8). The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results, however, the results are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation.

The aim of this study was to investigate desulfurization and de-ashing of a mixture of subbituminous coal and gangue minerals by the agglomeration method. For this purpose, experimental studies were conducted on a mixture containing subbituminous coal, pyrite, quartz and calcite. The effects of some parameters that markedly influence the effectiveness of selective oil agglomeration, such as solid concentration, pH, bridging liquid type and concentration, and depressant type and amount, were investigated. Agglomeration results showed that the usage of various depressants (Na2SiO3, FeCI3, corn starch, wheat starch) in the agglomeration medium has a positive effect on the reduction of ash and total sulfur content of agglomerates. It was found that an agglomerate product containing 3.03% total sulfur and 25.01% ash with a total sulfur reduction of 56.71% was obtained from a feed that contained 7% total sulfur and 43.58% ash when FeCI3 was used in the agglomeration medium. The choice of equipment to be applied to a given installation by the Application Engineer begins with the data as presented to him by the user. This point in the relationship establishes a communication link, which will decide whether or not the correct piece of Overhead Equipment is applied at the most economic advantage to the user. The role played by the user cannot be minimized. No one knows better than he, just what work he expects to accomplish with this piece of machinery. However, all too often, he oversimplifies the requirements, and along with minimal crane and building parameters, merely refers to one of the following crane classifications as defined by The Crane Manufacturing Association of America, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. This approach places the ultimate user in an unfair position, since he has then assumed the status of the machinery designer and must, therefore, assume the responsibility of the success or failure of the operation of that piece of machinery. If the user selects a Class "C" crane for his job requirement, when actually a Class "B" crane can adequately handle the work load, he is not offering the most economic solution to his company and added little to the cranes service capabilities.

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. In April 1989, Southern Company Services signed a 3.5 year contract with DOE-PETC for generic engineering development of an advanced physical fine coal cleaning technology known as selective agglomeration. This technology offers the potential for significantly higher pyritic sulfur removal (90% +) than conventional coal cleaning (30 to 50%) while maintaining high Btu recovery (90% +). Engineering development will include bench-scale process development; component development; adaption or modification of existing unit operations; proof-of-concept (POC) module design, fabrication, testing and evaluation; and small commercial facility conceptual design. The information obtained during POC operation will be sufficient to result in a technical and economic design base that can support construction and operation of a small commercial plant. The major goal of the research is to develop selective agglomeration technology to achieve 90% pyritic sulfur removal while operating at Btu recoveries above 90% based on run-of-mine quality coal. This objective will be accomplished in two phases: Phase 1 -bench-scale and component development, and Phase 2 -POC module operation and conceptual design of a small commercial plant. Currently, work is proceeding under Phase 1 (Tasks 1-7) of the project. A review of the status of Tasks 1-7 is presented in this paper.

We studied yttrium extraction from untreated zircon sand processing waste tailings. Xenotime mineral as the rare earth element source with an abundance of yttrium (REY) was detected in sufficient grade for extraction. As much as 9.03% yttrium exists in zircon tailings (analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The presence of yttrium was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry in xenotime minerals, which are yttrium carriers (Y-PO4). The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of leaching conditions on yttrium recovery from zircon sand after alkaline fusion treatment. Alkaline fusion was chosen to decompose phosphate into hydroxide in the xenotimemineral,which will reduce further required hydrometallurgical processing.Alkaline fusionwas carried out for 3 h at 450 °C, with a ratio of sodium hydroxide to zircon tailings sand of ~ 1:1. The alkaline fusion product was leached with water, followed by hydrochloric acid treatment to leach the yttrium. Yttrium recovery reached 87% under optimum conditions (60 °C, 1MHCl, and solid-to-liquid ratio = 1/10 for 7.5 min). A suitable model for yttrium dissolution with hydrochloric acid was diffusion through a solid particle ash layer. The calculated activation energy (EA) for this model was 20.21 kJ/mol.

This presentation will describe the process by which the Quebrada Blanca (QB) copper project in northern Chile was financed. It will also show how a relatively junior mining company addressed the problems created by its inability to provide its share of the equity funding and the guarantees required by the project lenders. QB is located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile, 170 kilometres southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 kilometres west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4,300 metres (14,000 feet). Figure 1 depicts the project's location. The QB orebody is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 million metric tons grading 1.3 percent copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million metric tons grading about 0.5 percent copper. In the late seventies and early eighties Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20-30 million dollars exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. For a variety of reasons they decided not to develop the property which was returned to its owners, Empresa Nacional de Mineria (ENAMI), which is a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988 ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through a public bidding procedure.

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1.0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of S02 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

The areas of application, the limitations imposed by water chemistry as well as the advantages and disadvantages in the use of limestone for the treatment of coal mine drainage have recently been described by the authors (1),(2), (3). The process has been demonstrated in continuous, full-scale operation to yield a treated water meeting specifications established by the Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board and containing excess alkalinity. Their final pH levels are usually less than seven, a condition which avoids consumption of excess neutralization reagents, but which occurs with lime-based processes and results from unwanted side reactions. Operating experience has been cited by Calhoun (4) using ferric waters while others (5), (6), (7), (8), (11), have reported on related research efforts. Despite the advantages including ?the relative simplicity, and minimal costs of the process, there have been very limited industrial applications of mine drainage neutralization with limestone. Although any treatment of these waters may be considered as a temporary control measure (9), the lack of feasible, immediate alternatives, the extensive magnitude. of the waters and the high cost of treatment requires that optimum processes should be utilized and that operating experience in their use be developed as is feasible. This paper will review treatment experience with a ferrous water of moderate pollution loading .

Production of methane from coal seams requires hydrofracturing, and the length of a hydraulic fracture determines we11 spacing. Since the volume of fluid injected is known, the fracture length is the volume divided by average width and height. If the fracture is contained in the known height of the seam, then fracture width becomes the major factor con- trolling length. Width is proportional to coal compressibility; bulk compressibility is known to be larger than intrinsic compressibility. A method is given here to measure in-situ compressibility (a) from transient pressure testing. Theory linking flow in porous media with rock mechanical properties is reviewed. A consistent derivation of the porous flow equation is given incorporating 3-D deformation and the effective stress parameter "st' linking changes in effective stress and pore pressure. The relations for "st' in terms of a and intrinsic compressibility (ai) are substituted into the field measured porosity-compressibility product (net) and solved for a, the constrained matrix compressibility. In a field example, using 4 wells with an anisotropic analysis, the ratio of major to minor permeability was 17 for the Pratt A seam. a was found to be 6x10-5/psi as opposed to the laboratory value of 1.4x10-6/psi.

Widespread high-calcium (HC) limestones in New Mexico and adjoining areas, are low in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds that would be deleterious for usage in sulfur removal. In southwest New Mexico, southeast Arizona, and adjoining parts of Mexico, limestones in the thick Mississippian Escabrosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, and Cretaceous U-Bar units are HC as are strata in the Mississippian Lake Valley, Pennsylvanian formations, Permian Hueco, and parts of the Permian Capitan Limestone of south-central and southeast New Mexico and west Texas. In north-central and central New Mexico, many limestones in the Pennsylvanian Madera Formation are HC as are some of the Cenozoic travertines. In northwest New Mexico, where the present-day mine-mouth coal- fired power plants occur, there are no HC limestones, but to the north in southwest Colorado some beds of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and Pennsylvanian Hermosa Formations are HC. HC limestones considered contain at least 95 percent calcium carbonate and less than 3 to 5 percent magnesium carbonate. Limits for other impurities are alumina, 1 percent; silica, 2 percent; sulfur 0.05 percent; phosphorous, 0.02 percent; and iron oxide, about 1 percent. Chemical and physical requirements differ slightly depending upon the ultimate use.

A Google search on talc asbestos yields more than 500,000 hits due to the growing number of civil lawsuits in this area. Historically, the litigation was centered on amphibole-containing industrial talc. There was no debate these talcs contained amphiboles, but the issue was the definition of asbestos and whether the amphiboles had an asbestiform habit. Ultramafic-hosted talcs, however, are formed in such a way as to not favor the formation of amphiboles in the talc, but they can occur in the surrounding black-wall. In these deposits, the serpentinite host rock is in direct contact with the talc, therefore, allegations can be made that non-asbestiform amphiboles or non-regulated serpentine group minerals can occur in the final products. We analyzed talcs from both metamorphosed carbonate- and ultramafic-hosted talc deposits using polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron microprobe (EPMA) with wavelengthdispersive spectroscopy (WDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with EDS, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Compositions of minerals determined by EDS alone are not sufficient to confidently identify asbestos, despite common practices by some researchers. We emphasize, using both historical samples, and analyses of currently contested minerals, the importance of determining both the structure and composition of a mineral, as well as defining its morphology, before concluding whether it is asbestos.

Data on dust-control practices, mining conditions and occupational exposures were gathered for approximately 80 underground continuous mining units. Despite silica contents on dust samples in excess of 5%, nearly forty units successfully maintained silica concentrations at or below 100 µg/m3 on a majority of occupational dust samples, while the remainder had difficulty maintaining this level. These two sample sets were termed Group A operations and Group B operations, respectively. This data was compared to identify causes of high occupational silica dust exposures. Analyses of dust-control parameters and geologies revealed only minor differences between these two groups. However, subsequent comparisons of face ventilation design showed considerable differences in silica exposure and silica content between Group A and Group B at the continuous mining machine and roof bolter operator occupations. These differences were minimal when using exhaust curtain ventilation with a dust scrubber. This face ventilation system can benefit operations having difficulty controlling silica dust exposure and silica dust content. The collected data also showed that occupational samples from Group B operations possessed generally higher silica exposures and silica content than similar samples from Group A. The single head roof bolter (helper) possessed among the highest silica exposures and silica contents in both groups.

California's annual production of >11 million tons of cement, at a value of over $640 million, comes from eight companies, which operate 11 plants. Cement is California's second most important mineral commodity, representing 25% of its total annual mineral production. Although most of the cement produced is consumed within the state, current export locales include the Pacific Northwest, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. An enumeration of the components required to produce cement is deceptively simple: calcium oxide (65%), silica (20%), alumina (4-5%), iron (3-4%), and calcium sulfate (4%) as a retardant admixture. The last, and most expensive, ingredient in cement manufacture is energy. Detrimental materials in cement mixes include excess .magnesium, alkalis, heavy metals, sulfur, and other volatiles. Each of the 11 cement plants in California requires a unique chemical solution of combined raw materials to produce a uniform product: portland cement. The geologist proposing solutions for the additive raw materials in cement manufacture must have a thorough knowledge of a particular cement plant's needs. In the California cement market, keeping the costs of additive raw materials down is one way to also stay competitive, and using a combination of natural and waste materials as additive raw materials allows cement producers to stay competitive.

The net acid generation (NAG) pH method is an important analytical tool that supplements static and kinetic tests for assessment of the acid generation risk of rock samples. This method is useful because it is simple, rapid and cost-effective; it combines features of the static and kinetic tests; and it can be conducted at mine assay labs. The NAG pH test is particularly effective for operational testing programs used to classify, selectively handle, and route potentially acid-generating waste rock. The NAG pH procedure is based on a 24 hour oxidation of a pulverized rock sample with hydrogen peroxide and subsequent measurement of the sample's pH. If the NAG pH is below a critical value, determined empirically, then the sample has the potential to generate acid in the field. The critical NAG pH value is typically within the range of 3 to 4.5, but the exact relationship between NAG pH and potential acid generation should be determined individually for each mine site, based on comparison with results of acid base accounting, humidity cell tests, and mineralogical analyses. Calibration and use of the NAG test for predicting ARD risk at several mines are described in this paper.

Application of shallow, seismic reflection to problems associated with mineral exploration, mine planning, abandoned-mine detection and environmental evaluation has been successful in many geologic settings. The increased dynamic range of recording equipment and the decreased cost of processing hardware and software have made shallow, seismic reflection a cost-effective means of imaging geologic targets significant to mining operations. Seismic data possess sufficient resolution in many areas to detect faulting with displacement of less than 3 m (10 ft) in coal seams as thin as 2 m (6.5 ft) at depths of 200 m (655 ft). Subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines at depths of less than 20 m (65 ft) can he detected and mapped. Seismic reflection has been successful mapping disturbed subsurface associated with dissolution mining of salt. Complex geologic features associated with deposition of various hydrothermal minerals have been mapped with high-resolution seismic reflection at depths from 80 m (260 ft) to more than 300 m (985 ft). Faults in sulfur-hearing cap rock over salt domes have been accurately located, allowing improved efficiency of the dissolution mining process. Shallow, high-resolution seismic reflection has the potential to enhance the economics and safety of mine operations.

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. "The third phase of the Bagram Drainage System project at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan included construction of a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel. The tunnel penetrated mostly stiff to hard clayey and silty soils. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to use pipe-jacking with a microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) instead of the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance method was evaluated and supported using hand calculations. Contractor support was provided throughout the project by providing design reviews and instrumentation monitoring during construction. This paper compares the value-engineering proposal to the specified method and describes the construction conditions encountered. INTRODUCTION As part of a larger improvement project at the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan, a shallow, 540-m long, 1.8-m inside diameter drainage tunnel was constructed to provide additional capacity for Coyote Creek to pass below several critical structures, including taxiways and the main runway, for mitigation of recurring flooding (see Figures 1 and 2). Overburden over the tunnel crown ranged from about 3 m to 5.5 m. An existing cast-in-place twin barrel concrete culvert runs approximately parallel to the new tunnel and is within about 8 m at its closest point. The contractor’s Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) to the specified two-pass Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) method (steel ribs and lagging or steel liner plate with a carrier pipe later grouted in-place) called for installation of the required drainage pipe by pipe-jacking (one-pass installation) using a slurry microtunnel boring machine (MTBM). The critical nature of the operations at the air base resulted in significant construction coordination challenges and a greater than usual need to avoid excessive settlements. Substantial restrictions were placed on drilling of investigative borings and installing instrumentation near runways and taxiways due to drill mast height. The prime contractor was SERKA TAAHHUT INSAAT A. S. (SERKA), the microtunneling subcontractor was Ludwig Pfeiffer Microtunnel GmbH & Co.KG (Pfeiffer), the jacking pipe designer was Gollwitzer Pipe and Shaft Technology GmbH (Gollwitzer), and the contractor’s tunnel engineer was Lachel & Associates, Inc. (Lachel). Lachel provided contractor support throughout the project including preparation of a VECP/Design Summary (including interpretation of existing and new geotechnical information), design reviews for jacking pipe, estimating settlement of an existing drainage structure above the new tunnel, and instrumentation planning, monitoring, and analysis during construction."
