Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. Komatsu America International has introduced two new hydraulic excavators. They can work in congested and confined areas. The tight tail swing radius of the PC128US-2 and PC22-8USLC-2 enables the excavators to minimize the work space. The units can operate in confined work settings that are inaccessible or counterproductive to traditional machines. Even the door is designed for tight working conditions. A convex door slides open along the exterior curve of the cab, rather than swinging out on hinges past tracks. And the excavators’ tight tail swing design allows them to load within the track width of the machine.

Due to increased production of fine coal during mining during this century and inefficient fine coal recovery technologies, a vast reserve of high quality coal currently exists in refuse ponds. A novel fine coal circuit consisting of a hindered-bed classifier, an enhanced gravity concentrator and a flotation column has been evaluated for the recovery of fine coal from refuse ponds. The treatment of a pond derived from Pittsburgh No. 8 seam coal resulted in the production of a premium fuel containing less than 5% ash and a calorific value of about 30,173kJ/kg with 60% mass yield. The results from the treatment of two refuse pond materials will be presented in this publication.

In a lagging economy where profits are tight, businesses cut costs. No revelation there. The mining industry, though, has always looked for ways to reduce production costs — no matter the state of the economy or commodity prices. The fact is, when planning a new mine or the expansion of an existing one, mining companies gamble that commodity prices will be reasonably high when a project comes onstream. It takes millions of dollars and several years to bring a mine into operation. And a lot can happen economically between the time management gives the go-ahead for a new project and its completion.

Handling materials in underground mines continues to be a major safety problem. To help reduce materials-handling injuries, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating those materials-handling tasks in underground mines that appear to generate a high number of injuries. Data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration for the years 1989-1999 were studied to find out if there were any trends in materials-handling accidents and if so, to determine what tasks were involved and the sources of injuries. Several underground coal and metal mines were visited to document innovative materials-handling technologies. Considerations for safety training and mechanization needs for continued reduction in materials-handling injuries are described.

One of the major problems encountered with recirculatory breathing apparatus presently used by mine rescue teams is that the inspired air becomes uncomfortably, and often dangerously, hot. This is also true with self-rescuers. It is well known that man can tolerate very high dry-bulb temperatures if the wet-bulb temperature is low, but not vice- versa. The maximum tolerable, wet-bulb temperature is about 42 °C (108 °F). A continuously inhaled wet-bulb temperature above this value can cause irreversible damage to the throat and lung tissue, and wet-bulb temperatures close to it cause extreme discomfort (1) and seriously retard the capability of the man to perform useful work. A theoretical analysis, combined with experimental results, has shown that it is the carbon dioxide absorbent that is the major cause of high wet-bulb temperatures of the inspired air in the Siebe Gorman Proto 4, and in the Draeger BG 174 apparatus, both of which are used by rescue teams on South African mines (2). In the Proto 4 apparatus, the absorbent for the carbon dioxide is soda lime (calcium hydroxide). The German Draeger BG 174 also uses this absorbent but under arduous conditions such as in hot environments (50 °C, 122 °F), the use of an alkali absorbent cartridge is recommended which consists mainly of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). Lithium hydroxide is used in some apparatus in the United States. It is clear that different absorbents will produce different quantities of heat and moisture for a given rate of absorption of carbon dioxide. The proportion of this heat and moisture which is transferred to the user depends upon how much can be removed from the recirculating air between the absorbent and the mouthpiece. This paper discusses the present methods of heat removal and describes the design and test results of a prototype evaporative cooler.

Passive-treatment systems that mitigate acid-rock drainage (ARD) from coal mines have operating since the mid-1980s. Large systems at metal mines are being contemplated. A 95L/sec (1500-gpm) capacity system is planned this year at an underground lead mine in Missouri. Mine, process and environmental managers need to understand how and why passive-treatment systems work. They must understand what operational limitations to expect, as well as the economics of construction and operation compared to the alternatives, like lime precipitation. Wetlands have been recognized as nature's method of improving water quality. Contaminant reductions can occur through the precipitation of metal hydroxides, sulfides and carbonates and pH adjustments. Local conditions, oxidation state and water and soil chemistries dictate whether these natural reactions will occur under oxidizing (aerobic) or reducing (anaerobic) conditions.

"The Vanuatu island arc and its adjacent back-arc basins form part of the southern New Hebrides subduction system in the southwestern Pacific Ocean within a triangle defined by the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji (Meffre & Crawford 2001). The back-arc region east of the volcanic front is characterized by three structural depressions namely Vate, Erromango, and Futuna (from N to S), also known as the Coriolis Troughs. Earlier studies of lava compositions reveal the occurrence of highly evolved alkali-rich dacites as well as ankaramite basalts within the individual troughs (McConachy et al. 2005).Here we present the first mineralogical and geochemical analyses of hydrothermal fluids and precipitates (sulfides, sulfates, Fe-oxyhydroxides), sediments, and volcanic rocks, sampled during the "Coriolis Volcanism and Vents" (COVOLVE) cruise SO229 in July 2013 aboard the German R/V Sonne. The samples were retrieved during several ROV Kiel 6000 dives directly from the newly discovered active vent sites at the neovolcanic Nifonea Ridge, and from multiple sites at water depths ranging between 200 to 2800 m within the Vate and Futuna Troughs as well as from the shallow water Epi Caldera NNE of the Coriolis Troughs (Fig. 1)."

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

The protection of miners, equipment, and infrastructure is discussed. While the primary focus of the described technology is to prevent miners from being injured, struck-by, or crushed by heavy equipment; another major benefit realized is also the protection of equipment and infrastructure. An attempt is made to define and classify the systems used to provide proximity detection and warnings as well as collision detection and avoidance. Information about the speed of vehicles and human operator response time can be a factor in the choice of what type of system and what features are needed to properly address the needs. How the technology adjusts to compensate for various vehicle speeds, while maintaining the same level of protection is noted. The statistics which justify the need of miner protection are provided. The primary system components required, what attributes they feature, and how they respond in the environment, is briefly highlighted. The physics behind the danger zone marker technology and what makes it so robust and reliable is established. Examples of a few mining applications and specific operational modes are provided for both surface and underground.

Introduction US dependence on external energy sources is dangerous because of unstable political situations existing in key energy exporting countries. So, recent national energy policies call for increased reliance on domestic energy sources. Coal ranks as the most feasible domestic energy source due to its abundant reserves and continental distribution. But to efficiently extract these coal reserves, huge sums of capital funds are needed. Due to the depressed economy, lenders of capital funds are forced to be more stringent with loan applications. This results in fewer loans granted. In many cases, it is uncertain if funding can be obtained. Furthermore, the greatest level of domestic mine financing is expected to be in the coal sector. Demand for capital in the domestic coal industry is anticipated to increase 80% by 1990. The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York warns that these future needs cannot be met by the present capital markets. This article analyzes the current and expected situations of the capital markets available to the domestic coal industry, including: • current and expected future types of financing used in the domestic coal industry; • problems the domestic coal industry may encounter as it seeks capital; and • the future availability of capital funds as concluded from analysis of the first two items. Background Information Regardless of industry, all projects or ventures can be divided into four basic stages: generation; evaluation; selection; and execution. Within the mining industry, one can break down these stages to draw a clear picture of mine development, as shown in Fig. 1. Each successive stage has a corresponding risk level. This risk level defines the type of financing available to the mine operator. Mining Venture Risks A coal mining venture can be characterized by its unique blend of technical and financial risk. As the mine moves through different development stages, varying proportions of each of these risks are encountered. It is these risks that the lender evaluates to determine project suitability. For a coal mining venture, the major complexities generally occur with the technical risk. These include: • quantifying the coal reserves: • assessing the feasibility of the mining method; and • evaluating the design of the wash plant. The reserve risk is gauged by the amount of measured, mineable, and saleable reserves. The greater the latter amounts, the lower the risk. Secure title to the reserves plus title for any surface areas required are also of concern to the banker. Many mining operations generate seismic signals. They come from blasting and from underground mine failures such as rockbursts, longwall first caves, coal bumps and pillar collapses. Traditionally, seismic motions have been of concern on a local scale because they could create damage to structures at the mine site or at neighboring locations. Recently, there has been much interest in the Comprehensive Nu-clear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). It prohibits any kind of nuclear explosion, anywhere. So distinguishing signals of mining operations from a possible nuclear explosion becomes important. An international monitoring system (IMS) is being implemented to verify the Treaty when it is ratified. It includes a large number of seismic stations capable of recording signals at regional (200 to 2,000 km or 124 to 1,240miles) and teleseismic (more than 2,000 km or 1,240 miles) distances.

This paper reports on research on leaching pyrite in a germ-free system. The effects of mineral particle size, pulp potential and various oxidation agents on pyrite leaching were studied. The results indicated that a smaller mineral particle size leads to a higher leaching rate of pyrite. The optimum results were obtained with a mineral particle size of -0.037 mm. The pulp potential reflected the leaching process and an increasing pulp potential improved pyrite leaching. The leaching rate rapidly increased with the addition of oxidation agents such as Fe3+ and H2O2. However, the precipitate generated by ferric ion coated the surface of the pyrite and prevented further leaching.

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. Cerchar Abrasivity Index (CAI) is one of the commonly used tests to evaluate rock abrasiveness for cutter life/cost estimations of TBM projects. There are at least 3 style machines, 2 different pin hardness, and the test could be run on fresh rock surface VS a sawn surface. Each of these parameters has a meaningful effect on the results, but its impacts were not fully understood nor its implications well explored. This paper reviews the current practice of Cerchar testing and its implications on geotechnical investigations related to TBM tunnels and provide a set of guidelines on testing and reporting of the test results for future projects.

London Underground is the oldest and one of the deepest Metros in the world. The temperature of the Underground has been increasing over the last 100 years, mainly as a consequence of increases in train service. Further increases in train service are planned in the coming years to meet the predicted growth in passenger demand. Unabated, the additional service will increase temperatures on the Underground. London Underground Limited (LUL) has therefore set up the Cooling the Tube Programme (CTP) to tackle the issues of thermal conditions on the Underground. Some of LUL?s studies and cooling methods have borrowed experience and techniques from the mining industry; some of methods used or proposed may in turn be of interest to the mining community. This paper presents a background into the sources of heat on the Underground network, the manner in which the heat is presently dissipated, the analysis of future temperatures and criterion and a number of means and methods being used or proposed to cool the network in an environmentally sensitive manner.

This paper addresses historical aspects and construction sequencing of the subway complex under Columbus Circle in Manhattan; the structural elements of the rehabilitation and new construction; and the challenges associated with design and construction. PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

This study investigates upgrading of low-grade banded hematite quartzite iron ore (Fe ~31%). Conventional beneficiation was found to be futile. The susceptibility of iron phases to microwave exposure and their selective absorption assists in the liberation of iron values. Microwave exposure of coarse particles at 540 W for 10 min yielded a concentrate with Fe 56.30% and recovery of 50.68%. Conventional carbothermic reduction at 500 °C, 60 min and 9% charcoal yielded a concentrate with Fe 57.6% and iron recovery of 68%. The presence of sufficiently bonded silica leads to an easy formation of a fayalite phase. The microwave reduction design yielded FeG of 57.6%, FeR of 47% and a yield of 24% at an optimal condition of 540 W, 8 min and 6% charcoal. It was found that a small fraction of microwave-irradiated ore-charcoal mixture melted rapidly, and pure ferrite balls were observed within 8 min. An optical micrograph of a ferrite ball reveals the retained austenite and martensite phase.

In September 1985 we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. By Dec. 10, our cutoff date, we had 430 responses, representing about 1.5% of the 28,238 people who received the September issue of ME. In the data that follow the tabulation and percentages are based on the number of individuals who responded to the particular question. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded told us something positive - you look at or read the magazine. Of the 430 respondents, 428 or 99.5% indicated that they had read or looked through the July and/or August issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 207 or 48.5%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 193 or 45.2%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 27 or 6.3%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Partners In Economic Reform, Inc., established a Polish-American Mine Center in Katowice, Poland, in 1996 to improve working conditions in the minerals industry. The program was based on the experience of mining companies, government, and labor in the United States, and was executed by a Coordinating Committee headed by the Center Director and Polish leaders from industry, State, labor, and academia. The cooperation among all parties has enabled safety and health issues to become part of industry restructuring with impressive initial reductions in coal mine fatalities. Existing work practices and attitudes of labor and management were assessed in coal mines throughout the country. Promotion, Rules, and Job and Task Analysis were identified as the areas requiring the most improvement, and are part of a post-graduate Safety Management program. Demonstration projects included measuring dust levels, using safety glasses, and promoting hazard awareness. Improved labor-management relations increased cooperation allowing for effective transfer of technology. Results can also be applied to improve the working environment of the manufacturing sector also undergoing restructuring.
