The Tilden concentrator was originally constructed in 1974 for the processing of low grade hematite. Flotation is a key concentrating process in the operation, and therefore flotation optimization has been a major concern since the plant startup. This paper will discuss some of the modifications made in the process to achieve optimization. The conversion that now enables the plant to process magnetite as well as hematite also will be discussed. INTRODUCTION The Tilden Mine, located in Ishpeming, Michigan, is managed by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Cleveland-Cliffs and two Canadian steel makers. It was constructed and started production in 1974 and expanded in 1979 for processing a low grade, fine-grained hematite iron formation for which there was previously no technology available. Several papers have been written describing the unique character of the concentrating operation. The hematite plant consists of 12 grinding and concentrating lines, which utilize two stages of autogenous grinding with crushing of an intermediate sized product. The ground product is deslimed in a highly dispersed alkaline environment to reject silica. Corn starch, the flocculant, has a high affinity for iron at the operating pH range of 10.5 to 11.0. The ore is upgraded from 35% to 45% iron in the desliming step. The deslime thickener underflow is the feed to flotation. Each flotation line consists of a bank of 10 rougher cells, followed by four scavenging banks incorporating 5, 4, 3, and 3 cells each. The Wemco flotation cells are each 14.1 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) in volume. A total of 12 flotation lines are available. [ ] A reverse flotation process is employed, using a straight-chain, 8 to 10 carbon primary ether amine silica collector. At the levels used in the circuit, the amine also serves as a frother. A final concentrate is produced in the rougher cells. The concentrates from the four scavenging steps are combined and recirculated to the feed end of the roughers, with the fourth scavenger froth being discarded as a final tailing. Upgrading to about 65% iron is achieved, with control of the circuit based on final concentrate silica grade. Starch is again used, this time as a depressant for iron. During the years of operation, several key areas of the flotation process have been targeted for optimization. The most significant improvements have been realized in the following areas: *Grade Control Automation *Control of Water System Chemistry *Flotation Spray Water This paper will focus on these areas, but other minor improvements also will be briefly discussed.

The exploration, geologist of necessity has to have a wide working knowledge of many specialties other than hiw own, First he has to use his own technical background to find a deposit,, of a mineral that is of interest, Once found, his problems are Just beginning, He then has to assume the role of an economist, an accountant, a mining engineer, a chemist, a metallurgist,, a salesman and what-have you, In the economic field, he must determine the marketability of either the ore or the refined mineral. He must gauge the supply and demand for the particular mineral he is interested in and make his best guess as to ultimate cash flow from a deposit over the estimated life of said deposit, He must then assume the role of a mining man and estimate cost of recovery, including an, evaluation of the most economic mining method, cost of supplies and labor, and again estimate a net cash flow. He must then determine amenability of ore to economic metallurgical methods, he must determine the legal status of the property involved and, after analysis of the specific situation, determine the best approach to a deal, After all of this he must sell it to the people who will put up the money and then put his deal together and sell it to the people who own the minerals, if that be necessary. Then he has to sit back, with crossed fingers and crossed legs wondering for some months, and in many cases even years, whether or not he is right. The expenditures required to open up a mine in this day of wild inflation are such that he has to be right, and the responsibilities are awesome.

A fluid mining process has been developed by the writer whereby phosphate deposits are leached in place through the injection of a weak and recoverable acid solution much in the same manner as in the recovery of oil by water-flooding. The phosphate mineralization is dissolved In place, selectively treated in a surface plant and a high grade diacalcium phosphate substatially free of fluorine (hence of feed grade quality) is recovered. Because of its finely divided and powdery state, the plant product is highly desirable as stock material for the manufacture of triple-superphosphate and of high grade phosphatic chemicals. Details of well completion, fluid injection, areal sweep and solution efficiency, plant design and economics are presented The rate of return on investment is particularly attractive under conditions of shallow occurrence of the phosphate mineralization such as in the Bone Valley formation of Florida. The process may also be applied economically to the Phosphoria formation of wide- spread occurrence in the Northwest United States through the application of selective formation fracturing (or Hydrofrac) previous to fluid mining operations.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, 150 km southwest of Ciudad Juarez. The ore deposit was discovered in 1979, and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2400 tpd from an ore reserve of 8.5M tonnes. Grades average about 8 % Zn, 0.5 % Pb, 0.2 % Cu and 50 g Ag per tonne. Substantial inflows of water into the under-ground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark was operated through a joint venture, Minera Bismark, S.A. de C.V., with U.S. and Mexican partners, but since early 1993, it is wholly Mexican-owned and operated.

In 1968 three historical rockbursts had occurred at Bibai Coal Mine in Hokkaido. At the time they had been observed by several seismic observatories as natural earthquakes away more than 100km from Bibai City. These facts taught us that the occuerrence of failure yielded in underground opening that was accompanied with seismic wave could be observed by seismometer on the surface. After two years from this desaster, the study concerning to microseismic events generated from underground mining panels has been begun by researchers with heart-throb.

Utilizing the technology developed for oil well stimulation by hydrofracing, a disposal system which permanently fixes the waste has been proven. Large quantities of radioactive waste can be processed by a single well system making this method an attractive method for permanent radioactive waste disposal. The system depends on locating a relatively thick formation of impermeable, but easily fracturable rock such as a shale, creating a horizontal fracture, pumping the waste into the fracture in a form which will subsequently solidify and seal the fracture from the well system. The paper presents the theoretical considerations from creating and extending horizontal fractures and how these considerations were used in designing a waste disposal system which is now operating.

To investigate the influence of boreholes, fans, and curtains for large opening underground mines (LOUM), we conducted a field survey for LOUM with the survey data serving as the numerical modeling inputs using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. Five different CFD modeling results were obtained with different borehole, box fan, and curtain setting conditions. The results indicate that most air quantity directly escapes through outlet 1 after coming into the inlet, causing a huge loss of airflow; volumetric air exchange index (VAEI) and minimum hours of fully exchanging the air (MHFEA) measure air exchange efficiency, with zone 2 of case 5 having the highest VAEI; The borehole minimally affects zones 2, 3, and 4, but drastically alters airflow direction in zone 1; The box fan enhances airflow to zone 2, improving ventilation efficiency and increasing VAEI; Curtains have little effect on distant working faces but influence airflow near inlets and outlets. This study provides a foundation for future research on the influence of boreholes, fans, and curtains, as well as optimizing their placement and effectiveness in face ventilation.

Flotation of the carbonate, oxide and silicate minerals of copper (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla) has been the subject of much research in recent years, but few effective solutions to this problem have been found. With decreasing reserves of sulfide minerals, the economic recovery of these "oxides" appears to be an important source of copper for the future. Xanthates have been known for many years to be malachite collectors (1), but only at very high dosages, or at lower dosages following activation of the mineral by sulfide ion. Dewitt and Batchelder (2, 3) found that chelating agents such as certain oximes were collectors for malachite and azurite, but also required high reagent dosages. Fuerstenau (4) has suggested, for example, that potassium octylhydroxamate may be an effective collector for malachite, On the other hand, Balberyszski (5) has found that oxide minerals may be completely sulfidized at high temperatures with gaseous sulfur or H2S, and then floated with conventional collectors. None of the above approaches appear to offer an economically effective method for the direct flotation of these oxide minerals.

Developments in the agricultural use of potassium (K) have been based solely on the essential role K plays in crop production. Crop plants cannot complete their normal life cycle if K is deficient or absent. In fact, no essential plant nutrient other than nitrogen is required in greater quantities. Table 1 shows the amounts of K some crops take up from the soil. Although the exact functions of K in the plant are not well known, its primary role seems to be tied to plant metabolism. Potassium is vital to the process of photosynthesis. When K is deficient, photosynthesis declines, but respiration increases. These two K-deficient conditions. . . reduced photosynthesis and increased respiration ... lower the plant's carbohydrate supply, the end result being poor agronomic crop production. Potassium is also essential to several other plant functions, including the following: 1) Protein synthesis. 2) Water use efficiency, through the influence of K on stomata opening and closing, to maintain the turgidity in plant leaf cells. 3) Translocation of heavy metals such as iron and zinc. 4) Ionic balance. 5) Control of enzyme reactions within plants.

Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people's awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

The Trixie mine is located in the East Mining District. Since production began in 1970 over 450 000 tonnes of ore grading 239 grams of silver, 6.9 grams of gold, and 1.2% Cu have been mined from veins in Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Detailed geologic mapping and extensive sampling are essential for compiling the data base required for efficiently developing and mining known reserves as well as planning exploration and development work. Although the basic techniques used by the geology group at the Trixie were developed many years ago, the reduced activity in underground precious metal mining in the U.S. have made these techniques less familiar to many presently active geologists. The increased activity in precious metals search and exploration again offer cause for the application of these techniques as a prerequisite to efficient exploration, development and production.

Mr. Chairman, members of SME, and guests It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to appear before this group. The topic of this paper is, "Current Trends in Related Industries and Their Influence on Electric Shovel Design and Size". Before getting into the major items, it is well to point out that this text will deal with loading shovels primarily, since their application is almost universal in major open pit mining operations throughout the world. Related industries influence our design in many ways. For the sake of simplicity, these industries will be broken down into two major categories. The first category to be discussed will include industries that will indirectly influence design and size, while the second category will include industries whose products can directly be incorporated by the engineer in the design of shovels.

The Bureau of Mines devised a column flotation technique using either fine or coarse bubbles and compared it with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a 44.7-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrate with 87-pct recovery, compared with 43.8- and 43.5-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrates with 85- and 77-pct recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse-and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5-pct-Cr203 with 95-pct recovery, exceeding conventional flotation which produced 35.6-pct-Cr203-grade concentrates with 87-pct recovery.

A selective extraction and separation of zirconium by solvent extraction with 1-octanol is proposed. The process is based on the dissolution of the metal basic carbonates in hydrochloric acid in the presence of potassium fluoride, using 1-octanol as extractant. The effect of several process parameters, including hydrochloric acid and potassium fluoride concentrations, reaction time, and phase ratio between the aqueous and the organic phase was investigated. Zirconium is enriched in the organic phase. The best extraction and separation results were obtained with the basic carbonate dissolved in 10% hydrochloric acid and 1.5 M potassium fluoride. The optimum reaction time was 15 min with an organic to aqueous phase ratio of 2:1. Based on the selectivity of zirconium over hafnium in the organic phase, a McCabe-Thiele diagram was constructed. A near complete stripping of zirconium from the organic phase was achieved using a 3 M sulphuric acid solution. Additional studies are required in order to determine the reaction mechanism and the chemical speciation of the current investigation.

[The two types of sulfide deposits in the Bathhurst Newcastle area are; (a) epignetic fissure deposits, and (b) massive sulfide deposits. Geological evidence has been variously interpreted to suggest a syngenetic origin, a source bed' origin, or a magmatic hydrothermal origin for the massive sulfide deposits. Sulfides disseminated through the black shales and argillites of the host rocks are enriched in S32 (mean value 22.34, S34. = 5.8 per mil) relative to the meteoritic standard of 22.21, and have a broad spread in range of values. S32/S34 ratios of sulfide minerals from the deposits occur in two distinct groups. The massive sulfide deposits exhibit ratios between 21.88 to 22.05, while the fissure deposits exhibit ratios between 22.18 and 22.21. These results suggest two separate sources for the sulfur, each, however, resulting in magmatic hydrthermal deposition because of the narrow spread of ratios in each group. Granite intrusive into the host rocks of the sulfide deposits have a mean K/A age of 386 ± 10 M.Y. Lead minerals in the sulfide deposits have a mean nodel lead age of 370±20 M. Y. Thus the lead minerals and the granite bodies were emplaced during the same major orogenic event. Sulfide minerals from magmatic hydrothermal deposit have a very narrow range of S32/S34 values, as do those of the Bathurst area. It seems reasonable, therefore, that well homogenized magmatic hydrothermal solutions are the most logical source of the sulfide deposits. Furthermore, the homogeneity of the lead isotopic abundance data gives strong independent evidence that the ores are of a magmatic hydrothermal origin.]

Humate, defined as weathered coal or mud-stone rich in humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) have been mined, primarily as soil amendments or drilling mud additives, in New Mexico for 15-20 years. The New Mexico humate resource is estimated to be 11 Gt, including weathered coal and organic mudstone. The HA and FA content determines the end-use, therefore a simple and consistent method of measuring organic-acid content was developed. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources method is based on repeated alkali leaching and acid precipitation. Precipitates of humate are ashed, with mass balance of solids maintained, to correct for material added during alkali-acid treatment. Analyses of upper coal member, Cleary Coal Member (Menefee Formation) and Fruitland Formation samples from the southeast San Juan Basin show ashing to be important in accurate analysis of FA content. Ash in the total FA fraction averages 70% compared to 2% in HA. The FA in weathered coal and organic mudstone are similar, although HA is significantly higher in the former. As weathering progresses, the FA content of weathered coal increases faster than in organic mudstone because of the greater total organic material in coal.

INTRODUCTION Radcont is a program designed by the author of this paper for the industry to use as an instrument for radiation contamination evaluation and ventilation planning system. Radiation in mines are associated with the mining of gold and gold bearing minerals, as uranium and thorium is incorporated in the mining of these minerals. Radiation contamination in South African mines is not a new concept as it was investigated by the Chamber of Mines in the early 1960's and found not to be hazardous at the time. Since some of our mines export scrap metal to customers abroad, it came to light (1991) that some of the scrap metal was radioactive. The authority that oversees the nuclear aspects in South Africa is the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS). They investigated these matters and found that the mines needed further information regarding radioactive material and the handling of these contaminated materials. As the various mines were licensed (with various conditions incorporated) thereafter, the mines had to do their own investigations as to what extent their properties (Surface and underground) were radioactively contaminated. Some mines were found to be highly contaminated over the years of operation and controlling conditions were installed and measures installed to reduce the contamination levels. One of the conditions when issuing a licence by the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS), is that a screening survey be carried out to determine the radiation exposure levels and corrective action to be taken if necessary. These surveys must be done by a person trained in the required procedures for such a survey. The person must also measure the risk correctly and assess the results properly. In such a survey, the internal and external exposure levels must be determined to assess the total exposure of persons working in those conditions and take appropriate action if necessary. When doing such a survey, hundreds and more likely, thou- sands of data points are recorded. In order to assess the data recorded, various integrated and difficult calculations need to be made, and takes up enormous amounts of time. (This excludes the interpretation of the results ) The following explanation of the program shows the different parts of such a survey assessment calculations to be done. The paper details the program layout and the different sub- sections within the primary program. It must be stated that the program, as with any other program, is as accurate as the data inserted into the data base. The program and details thereof are given under the following headings: 1. TOTAL EFFECTIVE DOSAGE WITH REGARDS TO: • GME required gravimetric results obtained (mg/m3) • Thick layer or total contamination measured (Bq/m2) • Dry condition surveys with dust loads taken as a Standard l0mg/m3 • Wet conditions survey with dust loads taken as l mg/m3 • Airborne long lived alpha and beta activities as determined by analysis in Bg/m3 • LTD (Thermoluminescent Dosimeter). Results as obtained from the SABS (South African Buro of Standards) are recorded in this section for each month of the year for each individual worker. An average dose is then determined at the end of the year. • Bucket measurements as recorded. • Smear samples (Loose contamination). As determined by Electra or by analysis • Occupational factors for Metallurgical and Engineering occupations in and around the Metallurgical facilities of your mine. • All underground dosage determination and calculations. (Radon and Thoron) 2. INFORMATION REQUIRED WHEN PROGRAM IS INITIALISED: As the program is started, it opens up on the contents page. Here there are various options to choose from, but one is cautioned as a beginner in operating the program, not to perform any tasks before carefully reading these instructions. Firstly, one must go to the 'Information required" pushbutton. Press this button. The information required page is shown where the cursor can be moved to the block where one can enter the specific mines name. To enter a mines name, put the cursor in the block provided and just insert the mines name with the normal keyboard keys and press the enter button on the computer keyboard. To enter the other information required such as Alpha and Beta instrument efficiency, ALI (Annual limit of intake) and probe area, one can either press the 'Data required" button for a dialog box information or enter it manually by just putting the cursor in the block provided and entering as did above. In order to insert all the required information for the pro- gram to calculate the information required, one must proceed further by entering the area names surveyed in the spaces provided. There are 20 spaces to enter 20 different areas surveyed. One must further also provide the amount of days worked in each area (i.8. 250) in the block provided. The de- fault is 250 days. Zeolites are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicates of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals. Their crystalline framework is based on a three dimensional network of SiO4 tetrahedra with all four oxygens shared by adjacent tetrahedra. The alkali and alkaline-earth cations are loosely bound within this framework structure and may be exchanged, to varying degrees, with other cations or molecular water. Most zeolites can be reversibly dehydrated. At present, close to 40 natural zeolite minerals have been identified and over 100 zeolites have been synthesized. Zeolites are a family of hydrous aluminosilicate minerals whose physical properties provide unique features for a wide variety of practical applications. Zeolites have been known for more than 200 years, but it was not until the middle of this century that their economic potential and widespread occurrence in sedimentary rocks were known. Since 1950, literally thousands of articles and patents have appeared in technical literature, and commercial pro¬duction of natural zeolites may now exceed 1 Mt worldwide an¬nually. In the past 40 years, the zeolite mineral group has changed from that of a museum curiosity to one of an established industrial mineral commodity. According to Breck (1974), zeolites are characterized by the following properties: 1) High degree of hydration, 2) Low density and large void volume when dehydrated, 3) Stability of the crystal structure of many zeolites when dehydrated, 4) Cation exchange properties, 5) Uniform molecular-sized channels in the dehydrated crys¬tals, 6) Ability to adsorb gases and vapors, 7) Catalytic properties. All zeolites are molecular sieves, but not all molecular sieves are zeolites. Activated carbon, activated clays, alumina powder, and silica gels are also molecular sieves. Molecular sieves are materials that can selectively adsorb molecules on the basis of their size, shape, or electrical charge (Clifton, 1987). Commercial application of zeolites is based on the following physical properties: molecular sieving, ion exchange, adsorption, and catalysis. Potential commercial utilization includes hundreds of possible applications. The principal uses at this time, however, are as fol¬lows: -Ammonium-ion removal in waste stream treatment, sewage treat¬ment, pet litter, and aquaculture, -Odor control, -Heavy metal ion removal from nuclear, mine and industrial wastes, -Agricultural use, such as soil conditioner and animal feed supplement. An estimated 800 kt to 1 Mt of natural zeolites were produced and consumed worldwide in 1991. Eight small operators reported collective production and consumption of an estimated 18 kt of natural zeolites in the United States during 1991, mostly for feed additives and for odor control, aquacultural, agricultural, catalytic, and ion exchange applications (Eyde, 1992).

We have developed a high-performance, flexible scheme for interpolating multi-dimensional data. The technique can reproduce exactly the results obtained, for example, from Ordinary Kriging and related techniques in 3D, or from Thin-Plate Splines (Briggs' minimum-cuwature algorithm) in 2D. Moreover, com- pared to traditional implementations of these algorithms, our method enjoys large computational-cost savings. The new approach produces an interpolation that obeys a Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The PDE may arise from physically based arguments, but its form can vary widely. It might be specified only implicitly (as through a Model Variogram), or be nonlinear (although a performance penalty could then apply). While a formal equivalence between Kriging and Splines has been known for some time (Matheron, 1980), the present derivation, from radial basis functions, further illuminates this connection. Thus, for example, we can make explicit the PDEs that underlie some of the Model Variograms most often used in Geostatistics. Besides its practical utility, the work thereby ac- quires a theoretical interest.
