INTRODUCTION Until recently, gamma doses had been largely ignored in Ontario uranium mines. This has been due to the assumption that these doses are small and have been more or less unchanged with time and hence their effects have been included automatically in the epidemiological studies that led to the establishment of radon daughter exposure limits. This assumption had to be challenged for two basic reasons. The first was that radon daughter exposures to miners have been progressively reduced over the years due to improved ventilation and ever more stringent regulations, while gamma exposures have presumably remained relatively unchanged. Therefore it must be assumed that the ratio of gamma to radon daughter exposure has gone up. The second reason is more philosophical. It is clearly inappropriate to make judgements on the significance of a potential industrial hazard when the magnitude of that hazard has not been fully assessed. Having decided that some sort of assessment of gamma exposures to uranium miners must be made, it was than necessary to determine how this should be done. Several options were available, for instance: (i) Wholesale personal gamma dosimetry for all mine and mill workers, (ii) Personal gamma dosimetry only for those workers suspected of receiving the higher doses, coupled with area monitoring to estimate the exposures of other workers, (iii) Area monitoring coupled with dose rate times time calculations for all. This would correspond to the generally prevalent method of assessing radon daughter exposures. It was argued that since radon daughter exposures are the major radiological hazard in uranium mines, to invest resources for assessing a lesser hazard to a greater degree of precision was not cost effective. (iv) Since gamma dose rate is related to ore grade, individual doses could be assigned from knowledge of work location and ore grade. Before deciding which of these options would be most appropriate, it was necessary to have some idea of the magnitude of the problem. Very few data were available in the literature and with the exception of a few spot dose rate measurements, and the results of a few gamma dosimeters issued to selected individuals by some of the mining companies, nothing was available. A rule of thumb of obscure origin is often quoted within the industry indicating that gamma dose rates underground will be about 0.25 mR/h per lb/ton or 5 mR/h per % U. This had been used by some to justify neglecting gamma radiation at least for ore grades of the order of 0.1% or 2 lb/ton, on the grounds that gamma dose rates would be of the order of 0.5 mR/h and therefore give rise to annual doses of only about 10 mSv (lrem). That is, it was assumed that gamma radiation was of limited concern compared to the hazard associated with the inhalation of radon daughters. We were thus faced with the situation of just assuming that no regulatory limits were being breached. This situation could not be allowed to continue. A program was initiated to investigate the gamma doses absorbed by uranium miners in three mines in Ontario, and extensive gamma surveys were conducted in the Quirke 2 mine of Rio Algom Ltd, Elliot Lake; Denison Mine, Elliot Lake; and Agnew Lake Mine, Espanola. Negative reaction was received from several mine company officials to the possibility of all miners being required to wear personal gamma dosimeters due to the logistical difficulties involved, and therefore part of the project was aimed at determining if a reliable correlation between gamma dose rate and ore grade in the work location could be deduced, in order that dose rate times time calculations might be used for gamma dose assessments. The results of these programs provided evidence that the gamma dose for some employees in the three mines investigated may be a significant fraction of the current maximum permissible annual dose of 50mSv (5 rem). When combined with radon daughter exposures in the manner recommended by the ICRP at their 1980 Brighton meeting (ICRP 80) the results indicated that some individuals will come close to the resulting limit and may even exceed it. Water consumption reduction in pellet feed operation is of paramount importance. Compared with traditional ball mills, high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) play an important role in Blaine surface area (BSA) generation to improve agglomeration properties, although stability is still a challenge. Grindability improvement of existing operation has a direct impact on the performance of the filtering and pelletizing operation. The results of this study, as a pregrinding operation, can be applied not only in new operations but also in existing ones, helping the operator control process variation in a more effective way while ore hardness increases.

As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

To address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the Narragansett Bay Commission completed a comprehensive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facilities Plan in 1993 which included a series of deep rock tunnels. Since completion of preliminary design of the program in 1994, the program has been reconfigured in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new CSO policy. The currently proposed system consists of a deep rock tunnel with two tunnel stubs which will provide230,000 cu m (62 million gallons) of storage at depths of up to 90 m (300 ft). This paper discusses the revised 5 km (3 mile) long deep tunnel system.

The article evaluates the convective heat transfer coefficient of ventilation air in a potash mine. The energy balance is obtained through thermal characterization of the ventilation air and rock, allowing for the calculation of heat transfer parameters. Different models for calculating the convective heat transfer coefficient are analyzed. The results indicate that the Pethukov–Kirilov, Gnielinski, and modified Dittus–Boelter models are optimal for this mine. The study also indirectly examines the conductivity of the adjacent rock, suggesting saturation throughout the studied section and the presence of liquid water upwelling in a specific section.

A study of coal pillar strength was done at the Beehive Mine during a three year period, 1974?1977, in a cooperative effort involving the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company (Pariseau et al, 1977). The Beehive Mine is located in the Wasatch Plateau coal field in central Utah near Orangeville, Utah, where mines are developed from outcrops between steep canyon walls with topographic relief of a kilometer or so (3,600 ft). Coal is found in Cretaceous sediments that dip gently to the west. Detailed geology of the Wasatch Plateau is described by Doelling (1972). Mining was done in the Blind Canyon seam. An earlier Deseret Mine worked the Hiawatha seam that is lower in the stratigraphic column by about 36 m (120 ft). Mining progress and ownership changes occurred in time with mine mergers and name changes eventually to the collective Des-Bee-Dove label. At the Beehive Mine, depth varied with topography but was approximately 360 m (1200 ft) on average; seam thickness varied from 1.5 to 6 m (5 to 20 ft) and usually required two passes of the miner. The mine was eventually closed and finally reclaimed in 2003. Semborski and Oakley (2006) present a brief history of the mine and describe the reclamation work in some detail. Figure 1 shows the surface topography in the vicinity of the mine that is in the center of the figure.

This work presents experimental results for the recovery of gold present in alkaline cyanide solutions by using the electroelution technique of strong-base anionic polymeric resins IRA 402-CL from Rhom and Haas-Brazil Ltd. loaded with gold. This technique of electroelution of anionic polymeric resins is based on the removal of metal ions adsorbed to the resin, resulting from a potential difference applied between the cathode and anode in an electrolytic cell. The electrolytic cell was composed of an aqueous solution with suitable chemical characteristics and an anionic polymeric resin bed loaded with gold. The resin used in the experiments was loaded using synthetic alkaline gold cyanide solution with 1.0 g/L of gold. The variables studied were electroelution time, cathode current density, distance between cathode and anode and the electrolyte chemical composition. Statistical methods made it possible to establish the optimum conditions that would achieve satisfactory gold recoveries by the electroelution technique. The statistically predicted response for the resin loaded with gold by percolation was 16.5% gold recovery, 2.0 A/m2 cathode current density, 20-mm distance between electrodes and 6.0 hrs electroelution time. For the centrifuging system, the statistically predicted response was 7.41% gold recovery under the following conditions: 0.25 A/m2 cathode current density, 1-mm distance between electrodes, 3.5 hrs electroelution time and 10.9% NaOH in the electrolyte chemical composition.

ShovelSense is a complete solution for bulk ore sorting at the mine face that combines robust shovel bucket mounted X-ray fluorescence sensors, with real-time material classification, fleet management integration and supporting cloud-based data infrastructure, to ensure each truck always goes to the right destination. Correct truck destinations are a challenge in many current mining settings because the material classification of a truck, which is the key input into the truck destination, is often based on estimates at block resolution (~20x20x15m), with limited adjustment for blast movement and mixing. In this contribution, we present a geostatistical, data driven approach to estimate the potential value of bulk ore sorting at the mine-face for seven open pit mines. The approach is premised on the assumption that truck loads within blocks follow a simple gamma distribution. Standard ore control data from the seven mines have been used to estimate the potential bulk sorting value at these operations and ShovelSense-integrated dispatch datasets have been used to validate these estimates for specific benches on which ShovelSense operated. ShovelSense results validate the ore control data-based value predictions and show how at mine-face bulk ore sorting value varies between distinct deposit types. In general, deposit types that have higher bulk ore grade contrasts, display more potential ShovelSense value. The manuscript concludes with the limitations and opportunities of applying the proposed value estimation approach to evaluate at mine-face bulk ore sorting opportunities for open pit operations.

Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

In 1991, LTV Steel Mining Company decided to close an open pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota, using a passive treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. Over 50 million metric tons of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages, and prior to closure annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5-50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required. Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to over 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992, and have removed 60-90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1 % of those for an active treatment plant. Since mine drainage problems can continue for over a hundred years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland treatment systems within seven years.

Survival of the mining industry as a viable economic entity in the United States is being seriously threatened by declining grades of ore reserves, rising operational and capital costs, and increased governmental taxes, restrictions, and subsidizing of third world competition. Discovery of major high-grade deposits is becoming increasingly unlikely. International competitiveness of the U.S. deposits will depend upon 'Yankee Ingenuity,' innovations in mining methods, metallurgical treatment, and financial arrangements, and a viable national strategy. This will require not only effective management for control of operations, but management that encourages breakthroughs in technology, financing, labor relations, and in public and governmental understanding. The mine geologist and the exploration geologist both have important roles to play in all aspects of this fight for survival of the industry.

A preliminary model has been developed for autogenous pebble milling using information obtained from studies on ball milling and SAG milling. The model treats the breakage as the weighted sum of first-order breakage of smaller particles by tumbling pebbles, non-first order breakage of larger particles which are too large to be nipped properly by pebbles, autogenouS fracture and chipping of larger lumps to form pebbles, and autogenous fracture and abrasion of pebbles. The model includes the effects of residence time distribution, classification through the exit grate, and a mass transfer relation which describes the accumulation of fine material in the mill. Example simulations are given, based on breakage parameters determined from batch grinding tests in laboratory mills. fracture breakage and abrasion. In the development of these preliminary mass balance equations it will be assumed that breakage by fracture is first-order, but this assumption will be modified later in the paper. It will also be assumed that the residence time distribution of a long autogenous mill can be described by an equivalent series of m fully-mixed mills, with a classification action imposed on the mill contents by the discharge grate. Size distributions are expressed as a v2 geometric series, numbered 1 for the top size down to n for the fines, or "sink" interval. If the holdup in the mill is W then the rate of breakage of material in size interval i is given by SiwiW, where wi is the fraction of material in size interval i, and Si is -the overall specific breakage rate of size i material (fraction per unit time).

I have been asked to talk to you this morning about phosphate marketing and distribution. In discussing this I will attempt to answer such questions as: What is phosphate? Where do we get it? What form is it and how do we sell it? How do we distribute it? How is it applied? And last, but not least, What about the future? To start with, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients. It is the element essential for root structure of plants. Plants, like humans, need a balanced diet. Thus, the amount of phosphate required by individual plants is, in part, related to how much of the other nutrients are used. Virtually all soils contain a certain amount of available phosphates. Back at the turn of the century the most common source of additional plant nutrient, including phosphates, was from cattle manure. The use of chemical fertilizers is something that has grown significantly during the last half century, and in particular, the last 20 years.

The past decade has seen remarkable progress by the railroads both in equipment and concepts in the handling of dry bulk. materials. While such shipments have always been an important part of the traffic handled by the railroads I little was done to improve the efficiency of handling or toward attempted optimization of equipment design before 1960. Several developments at about that time turned attention to this important segment of railroad traffic. One was the construction of a successful coal slurry pipe-line. Another was the promise of substantial economy in electric power transmission by ultrahigh voltage systems and finally, came the growing technological and economic feasibility of nuclear fuel electric generating plants. Each of these developments was a threat to the coal traffic of the railroads --the most important single commodity they handled in terms of revenue and tonnage. By the mid-1950's I Southern Railway management had become most concerned with its growing investment in freight car equipment and the declining revenue productivity of the capital employed. Additionally I there was substantial concern with the loss of business and potential losses in the area of the railroad's greatest economic advantage --bulk commodity movements. In 1958 a small team was established to study this problem. They arrived at two conclusions. The first conclusion was that within limits of maximum gross allowable weight on rail the lowest unit net capacity cost of investment came at maximum allowable gross weight per car unit. INTRODUCTION Development work at Carr Fork Mine of Anaconda Copper Company in Tooele, Utah commenced in August 1974. A decision to install an underground gyratory crusher for primary crushing run-of-mine ore and waste was made in 1976. Higher throughput rates, larger reduction ratios and greater flexibility in terms of meeting immediate and expanded production needs were the main reasons for selecting the gyratory crusher over the jaw crusher. UNDERGROUND MATERIALS HANDLING Underground crushing and conveying system was designed for a capacity of 16,300 mtpd of ore and waste on a 2-shift, 5-day week basis. Engineering and design of crusher complex was performed by Anaconda engineers at Carr Fork. Figure 1 represents the longitudinal section of mine showing the general materials handling system. Mine area is trackless except for materials and production haulage which is run on rail track on both 1200 and 970 levels. Ore from stopes and waste rock from development headings are handled by 3.8 cu m (5 cu yd) Jarco scoops and dumped into 2.4 m (8 ft) diameter ore and waste passes at the 1200 level. The material gravitates down to the 970 level where it is loaded into 12 cu m (420 cu ft) ASEA mine cars using side loading chutes. From the earliest use of crushed and broken stone as landfill for eroded gullies in trails and roads, to the mixing of sand and gravel with cement to make concrete, men and women have found mineral aggregates to be useful materials in satisfying human wants. Crushed stone, sand and gravel, volcanic cinders, pumice, manufactured lightweight aggregates, slag, cinders, expanded perlite and vermiculite, and a great array of recycled materials such as grog (broken or crushed brick) and fly ash have served as mineral aggregates. These materials have provided bulk and strength in portland cement concrete, bituminous concrete, road base, fill, concrete block, and plaster and stucco finishes. Mineral aggregates provide many special characteristics such as compressive and tensile strength, surface textures, weight and density, thermal and acoustical insulation, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. While most materials used as mineral aggregates are consumed on the basis of their low unit values, the large volumes extracted in the United States each year make them one of the most valuable mineral resources in current production. In 1960, US production of construction aggregate was just over a billion tons per year (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). Two decades of accelerated interstate highway, residential, and commercial construction brought the total annual production of mineral aggregates to roughly 1.4 Gtpy by 1970 and just over 1.6 Gtpy by the late 1970s. General economic and related construction slowdowns in the early 1980s saw annual US production of aggregates fall to below 1.1 Gt in 1982, and then rise to just over 1.7 Gtpy in 1990, a new peak in mineral aggregate production and use. Per capita annual consumption of mineral aggregates was approximately 5.68 t/capita in 1960, 6.89 t/capita in 1970, rose to a high of 7.25 t/capita in 1979, and has since settled to just under 7 tpy for every man, woman, and child counted in the United States Census of 1990. The value of these materials came to approximately $9 billion in 1990. During the period 1960-1990, roughly half of all mineral aggregates were used in the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial structures, and the remainder was consumed in highways, bridges, and other transportation facilities such as railway roadbeds, airports, and water-related projects (Meyer and Zelnick, 1991). During the period 1988-1992, public works (highways, waterway projects, road maintenance, etc.) represented closer to 60% of annual mineral aggregate demand with residential and non-residential construction approximately 40%. The growing market share of public works projects has been mostly due to the dramatic slowdown in residential, commercial, and industrial construction during the 1988-1992 period.

I wish to submit this discussion item on an article published in the August issue of MINING ENGINEERING by Wala and Altman on the use of canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks. The advent of computer graphics and plotting has enabled complex underground mine layouts to be displayed and plotted in a variety of three-dimensional formats that very closely represent the actual mine layout. This enables the ventilation engineer, who is familiar with the mine, to display the network pressures, quantities, resistances, and fan locations in a way that can be understood by everyone working at the mine. This is important if the ventilation engineer needs to discuss changes in ventilation with production personnel, or escapeway procedures with union personnel. While I can see some of the potential advantages in the canonical ventilation network diagram described by Dr. Wala, it appears to me that the fact that the diagram has no visual equivalence with the actual mine layout means that most mine personnel will find such a diagram almost incomprehensible. The authors have alluded to certain advantages with the canonical diagram. However, I find it difficult to see that these outweigh the fact that almost everything listed can be duplicated in isometric diagrams, and in a manner that is easily understandable to everyone in the mine from the miner to the mine manager. Perhaps the authors could show a clear example comparing an isometric with a canonical portrayal of a mine network showing the information that is immediately available from the canonical network that is not obvious in the isometric diagram. There is in this country a severe problem with the need for ventilation engineering and expertise to be used and accepted by mine management as a necessary part of mine planning. It seems to me that to introduce the requirement for further explanation so that management can understand a canonical network display will hinder more than help the recognition that ventilation engineering needs at so many mines in this country. However, I can see that the canonical approach does have its place in assisting the practicing mine ventilation engineer, wherever he or she exists in the organization chart for a typical mine. In this case, could the authors please indicate the availability of the computer program to compute and plot the canonical diagram for a mine ventilation network.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

Underground testing was carried out by Ingersoll-Rand, Inc., under contract to the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of a machine-mounted scrubber system for ventilating the face during an extended advance. A continuous miner equipped with an integral flooded-bed dust scrubber system was instrumented with methanometers and Real-time Aerosol Monitor (RAM) dust monitors. Methane and respirable dust data were collected at brattice setbacks of 7.5 m (current operating distance), 10.5 m, and 15 m (blowing ventilation) during production shifts. Results showed that a suitable machine-mounted scrubber system can adequately ventilate the face at brattice setbacks up to 15 m. No deterioration in ventilation performance was observed as brattice setbacks were increased from 7.5 m to 15 m. The scrubber system effectively controlled face methane levels at large setbacks, though respirable dust levels increased as much as 33 pct at the operator's cab at setbacks greater than 7.5 m.
