The abstract discusses the problem of silicosis among roof bolter operators in coal mines due to respirable quartz dust (RCS) exposure. It presents a study comparing a new wet box collection system to the traditional dry box system. The wet box system uses water to saturate collected material, reducing RCS exposure during cleaning. The study found that the wet box system significantly reduced RCS exposures and quartz content in samples compared to the dry box system.

The concept of green mining is to improve the mining industry in a holistic way so that it is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. The purpose of this study was to develop an evaluation index system of green surface mining based on the theory of green grades. The evaluation model is comprised of three attributes (safety, efficiency, and environment), nine criteria, and 35 indicators. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to determine the weights of indicators by taking into consideration degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality. Findings indicate that the environment is the most critical aspect of green surface mining, followed by efficiency and safety. The top five ranked green mining success indicators were the application of new technology, starting-off-rate of equipment, science and technology input to total investment, the number of accidents (decreased), and the production (increased). It was observed that more improvements are needed to overcome water, air, waste, and sound pollution. Attention should also be paid to land reclamation and post-mining land uses, which are key factors in green mining. The proposed model can be applied to evaluate and improve the level of green surface mining in other regions. This study provides a tool for decision-makers that can offer technical assistance to green mining.

Zinc ferrite ( ZnFe2O4) is a by-product of non-ferrous metal production and is considered a promising source of raw zinc. The most efficient way to extract zinc from its ferrite is via acidic extraction, specifically leaching by hydrochloric acid. A comparative study of synthetic zinc ferrite hydrochloric acid leaching in isopropanol, aqueous, and the mixed solvent was performed. Zinc ferrite was obtained by sintering a zinc and iron (III) oxide mixture. Crushed samples were subjected to leaching in 1 M HCl at 323, 333, and 353 K and pulp density of 1 g/100 mL. The dissolution of zinc and iron into solution in organic media reached 77% at 353 K, while in an aqueous environment this value was 65%. The activation energy of 70.0 kJ/ mol was found for the leaching process in an isopropanol environment, which is lower than that in an aqueous solution by 15%. The more efficient leaching effect of isopropanol is attributed to the lower dielectric constant of the alcohol which increases the affinity of chloride anions for zinc and iron cations at leaching.

I have spent my entire life in the mining industry pursuing what I believed was an honorable profession that provided products that were critical for our social and economic well being. Now I am told that all of my efforts been for nothing and that I have been doing something morally wrong - mining. This view of the future is not one that the mining industry has to allow to unfold. A determining factor in how things will turn out is continued improvement of the industry's environmental performance. To some extent, the current state of affairs in the United States is a result of the common perception that greedy corporations (usually foreign) are somehow ripping off US citizens of their native birthright or natural treasures in the name of corporate profits. Implicit in this view is the belief that corporations will take shortcuts or violate the environment in the name of profits. I have 26 years of experience in working in the copper, uranium and gold industries. Profits during those years were meager and difficult to find (Fig. 1). In fact, when I began working fresh out of college, I chose copper, which was then selling at around $1/lb. By the time I left copper mining, it was selling for 45 cents/lb. I then moved to uranium, which was selling for $52/lb. By the time I left it was $16/lb. I finally picked gold, which was then at ($650/oz). There is a whole generation of engineers, geologists and professionals who have spent two decades downsizing, closing mines, improving costs and getting smarter about how the mining industry does what it does. The environment, health and safety are areas where there have been great improvement. There are five characteristics of corporate governance that are critical for a company to develop and an industry to embrace if environmental, health and safety excellence is to reach new heights in the labor pool.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. The South Bay Ocean Outfall tunnel is located at the U.S./Mexico Border and is one link in a system designed to treat and dispose of raw sewage entering the Tijuana River Valley from Mexico. The 11 finished diameter tunnel extends 19,000’west from the bottom of a 200 deep, 36 diameter drop shaft. At the western terminus of the tunnel, a Riser shaft connects the tunnel to conveyance and diffuser pipes on the seabed. The tunnel runs through the San Diego Formation, consisting of clay, silt, sand, gravels, cobbles, and boulders. A Mitsubishi Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machine equipped with a large variety of monitoring and control devices was used. This paper will provide an overview of the Project’s construction, with special emphasis on the value of the electronic data acquisition system.

The estimated total energy demand for the U. S. is 60 quadrillion BTU for 1970 and is expected to more than double by the year 2000. Today the energy crunch is here. It is evidenced by brownouts to conserve electrical energy, and the shortage of gas and oil. Many such headlines, including suggestions for energy rationing, are in the news today. Paradoxically we have an abun¬dant source of energy in the form of coal. Energy consumers, however, are geared to use fuel in other forms. It is the intent of this presentation to discuss processes under development for conversion of the energy contained in these vast coal reserves to more usable forms. Coal conversion to synthetic fuels should be of particular interest to those engaged in mining. Coal consumption in a single conversion plant is expected to range from 10,000 to 40,000 tons per day. Plants will be located at the mine mouth and will operate continuously 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Further, many such plants will be needed., For example, looking at natural gas only, the supply/demand gap is estimated to reach 13 trillion cubic feet per year by 1985. Assuming that gas from coal conversion were to fill only 101, of this gap, 15 plants producing 250 MMSCFD would be required. These plants would consume about 90 million T/Y of coal or 135 million T/Y of lignite. It will indeed be a challenge to mine, suitably prepare, and transport coal at these projected volumes without interruption. Many ideas have been conceived for better utilization of coal and these are in various stages of development. Those supported by public money are covered by the Annual Report of the Office of Coal Research (OCR), Department of Interior. The two processes to be discussed, the Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) C02 Acceptor Process (1)(2)(3) and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company's (PAMCO) Solvent Refined Coal Process (4)(5) are both sponsored by OCR.

Clays for building bricks and roofing tiles in Chile are classified as common clays and ball clays, with deposits of sedimentary and residual origin, both Cenozoic in age. Deposits are known from north to south, through 11 of the 13 Chilean Administrative Regions, 18° to 39° South latitude, and from west to east, through three of Chile's main geomorphic features, namely the Coastal Plains, Coastal Range, and Intermediate Depression. Alluvial and lacustrine sedimentary common clay deposits are located in the northern and southern Intermediate Depression. The average chemical composition of clay deposits in I and I1 Regions, is 58 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 4 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, feldspar, and albite. The average chemical composition of clays in Metropolitan, VI, and VIII Regions, is 52 percent Si02, 16 percent A1203, and 6 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are montmorillonite, quartz, and plagioclase. Residual common clay deposits occur in the Intermediate Depression and in the Coastal Range internal basins, VII, VLII, and IX Regions, and they represent surficial alteration of pumice beds and crystalline rocks. The average chemical composition of clay deposits derived from crystalline rocks is 58 percent SO2, 17 percent A1203, and 9 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are sericite, quartz, and clinochlore. Clay deposits formed from pumice beds contain 47 percent Si02, 24 percent A1203, and 10 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, feldspar, and cristobalite. Sedimentary ball clay deposits are located in the Coastal Plains and Coastal Range, VI, VII, VIII, and IX Regions, between 34" and 39" South latitude. The average chemical composition of the ball clay deposits is 51 percent ,902, 28 percent A1203, 5 percent Fe203 by weight; the primary minerals are kaolinite, quartz, and sericite (illite?). These clay deposits supply the Chilean building sector with over one million metric tons (mt) (1.1 million short tons [st]) of material per year. The average growth rate of clay consumption during the period 1993 through 1997 was 10 percent annually. The clays are used by both mechanized plants and handcraft facilities.

When Ralph Banks called and asked if I would agree to present a paper on environmental health in the coal industry, I was reluctant because I have not been actively involved in coal mine dust control on a day-to-day basis for a number of years. Ralph reminded me that I am one of the few industry people with an industrial health background who remembers the pre-1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety era. This marks the second time within the past year that I have had a similar request based on the same basic reasons. While I was pleased to have been remembered, I'm beginning to feel like the football player who has played one too many games. In responding to Ralph's request to present an overview of the past, present and future of environmental health in the coal industry, I have attempted to take the broad approach of someone who, having been intimately involved in an area of endeavor for a number of years and then leaves, has an opportunity to revisit that area at a later date to see what has changed and what remains the same, what have been the successes and the failures. Since none of us can foresee the future, trying to project too far ahead is fraught with frivolity, except that unless one is foolish enough to accept a future invitation to review those predictions compared to actual events, no one will recall how accurate or inaccurate those projections might have been. I can assure you that I will not ask to accept that challenge, so you can rest comfortably that five years from today you will not be asked to sit through a similar presentation by me - and that's a promise.

The handling and disposal of mine water is a much larger problem than is apparent at first glance. Many more tons of water are removed from underground coal mines in the United States each year than tons of coal. In the old anthracite region of Pennsylvania the average was around 32.7 t (36 st) of water for each ton of coal produced, while bituminous mines average about 4.5 or 5.4 t (5 or 6 st). Water encountered in the mines may come from several different sources. In mines with light cover and without a firm solid roof, rain may seep directly into the workings. This is also true of deeper mines where pillar falls have broken the roof to the surface. The top under creek beds is generally faulty and broken and water comes through the roof at this point. Deeper mines are frequently overlain by water-bearing strata and pillar breaks and faulty top can admit water, while places running to the dip often accumulate water which comes up through the bottom. In all cases, except where passing under a year-round stream, the amount of water made is usually pretty closely connected with the weather-more water during the rainy season, less in the dry, although the deeper a mine is, the longer it is before changes in rainfall are felt. Another source of water, not connected with seasonal changes, is old water, accumulated over a period of time in abandoned workings of the mine, or from flooded adjacent mines. Here the water filters through the coal, the parting, or comes up through cracks in the bottom. Similarly, core holes, drilled to prospect the property, can be a source of unexpected water and modern safety requirements for dust-allaying water at the working faces can turn a pleasant working area into a soggy mess over the weekend if the system is not properly maintained and operated. Why water must be disposed of is obvious. If allowed to accumulate, sooner or later the mine will fill up, or at least it will become "roofed" in low places, blocking ventilation and traffic. It must be controlled long before it reaches this stage. Water standing in the working faces is unpleasant for the men who have to work there and also cuts down on the amount of work they can do, as they must watch where they step all the time. It is especially unpleasant in low coal.

Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.&apos; In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. The techno-economic and social benefits of cemented paste backfill (CPB) resulted in its wide acceptance by the mining industry. The Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) remains the key binder but to diminish its economical constraints, suitability of alternate binders has been examined worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of partial replacement of OPC with fly ash on the CPB’s strength and to determine the most optimal mix to achieve the required strength (1 MPa at 28 days of curing) at the most cost-effective way using the Bayesian network (BN). The CPB mixes were prepared at 72 wt.% solid concentration with mill tailings (87–91%), OPC (6–13%), and fly ash (0–4%), and instantly after mixing, fresh (slump, bleeding, density) CPB properties were measured. The strength was tested at 7, 14, 28, and 56 days of curing and initially analysed through traditional model. The traditional models follow the aleatory principle and are considered not appropriate for geotechnical engineering. Hence, the BN model was developed and tested. The reliability of two classifiers in learning model structure was compared which gives Naïve Bayes as the highest reliable tool. The CPB’s strength is most sensitive to the OPC content. The most consistent mix(s) is mill tailings: 87–88%, OPC: 9–11%, fly ash: 1–4%. Adding fly ash at 89–91wt% mill tailings possesses high failure probability of the CPB. The collinearity test indicates that the fines percentage and chemical composition of CPB’s ingredients are highly correlated with its slump, bleeding, and strength development.

Freeport Minerals Co.&apos;s Ertsberg East underground operation typifies the cliche that all the "easy" ore deposits have already been found. Despite its location, in a remote Indonesian rain forest, and the effort and expense required to develop the ore body, the mine was developed on schedule, under budget, and with minimal disruption of the adjacent open-pit mining operation. Development of the Ertsberg East copper, gold, and silver ore body took less than two years after exploration drilling and feasibility studies were completed. In addition, the project came in well under its targeted budget of $101.5 million. Initial block caving and underground ore production took place last year. About 3 kt/d of Ertsberg&apos;s total 8.6 kt/d ore production is currently mined underground. This will increase to 5.4 kt/d by year&apos;s end. Underground operations will eventually account for all of Ertsberg&apos;s production, as the open-pit ore body is depleted. Freeport Minerals is currently studying the possibility of increasing total Ertsberg East production tonnage to 10.5 kt/d by 1983. The equipment, work practices, and development methods at Ertsberg East (Gunung Bijih Timur or "GBT"), while typical of other block caving mines, were modified for rapid mine development and maximum ore recovery. Located in the Irian Jaya province, "Gunung Bijih" is the Indonesian expression for the Dutch "Ertsberg" that in English means "ore mountain." "Timur" means "east" and relates to the fact that the new underground ore body lies about 1 km east of the open pit. The area surrounding GBT is mountainous, with peaks from 4.2-5 km. The underground mine adit and surface plant are located at a 3.6-km elevation. The mine, 4° south of the equator, gets 5.1 m/a of rain, but has an average daily temperature of only 13°C because of the mine&apos;s elevation.

The high-grade Th-U-Y zone is one of the numerous mineralized zones found in the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites in southwestern Egypt. It is characterized by the thorium minerals thorite and thorogummite, which are closely associated with xenotime-(Y). This zone of mineralization is localized in the eastern part of the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites. This zone does not relate to the first phase of syenites that appeared on the surface but is linked to the other, hidden phase of the syenitic body. Additionally, the fluids responsible for the mineralization of this zone belong to the late-stage hydrothermal event as well as the fault action due to the fact that it had continued reactivations for a long period of time. The studied mineralized zone also contains ceriopyrochlore-(Ce),(Ce,Ca,)2 (Nb,Ta)2O6 (OH), fluorite (CaF2) and barite (BaSO4), which are found in considerable amounts, whereas apatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) and chromite (FeCr2O4) are rarely found together with Fe-oxi-hydroxides (hematite and goethite) with a minor amount of jarosite (KFe33+(OH)6(SO4)2). Finally, the main constituent mineral in the zone is the pseudomorph perthite in addition to quartz, which is found as deformed crystals. A technological sample was collected from this zone and was found to assay 4.62 weight percent thorium (Th), 0.37 weight percent uranium (U) and 3.12 weight percent rare earth elements (REEs). From the chemical and mineralogical composition of the studied technological sample, the leachabilities of Th, U and REEs were investigated using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) agitation leaching and pug leaching methods. The latter was found to be preferred under the conditions of 0.54 ton H2SO4 per ton of altered syenite at 110 °C for two hours.

With ever rising energy costs, it is increasingly important for mines to operate with energy efficiency. As a large portion of a mine?s energy consumption is often attributed to the operation of mine ventilation fans, maintaining an efficient ventilation system is a critical pro-active way for mining companies to reduce power costs. A common way to measure a mine?s ventilation system efficiency is to calculate the volumetric efficiency, which is simply a calculation of the percentage of total mine air that is usefully employed for production. The purpose of this study is to document a nationwide comparison of the volumetric efficiency of U.S. underground coal mining operations. The results will aim to show just how efficient today?s coal mine ventilation systems are and what factors may be causing their various efficiencies and inefficiencies.

"The aim of this study is to give a better understanding for the performance of the composite material RRS and the synergy effect of its components under different stress regimes and while an excavation face advances during tunneling. The lower part of the Q-system scale (i.e. Q-values of 0.4 or less for a tunnel span of 10m) is commonly used for tunnel applications in softer rock formations. This is implied in the updated Q-chart, where the dimensioning of rock support by using Reinforced Ribs of Shotcrete (RRS) comprises the use of fiber reinforced shotcrete, S(fr), rock bolts and shotcreted beams reinforced with steel rebars. In this study, an effort has been made to simulate RRS in a numerical code and to study its behaviour in a real case study. A double tube, triple lane tunnel in weathered tuff has been chosen as reference material for testing RRS under changing load. A rather extensive parametric study has been run by using the same key input rock mass parameters and three different in situ stress regimes (sH/sv =2, sH/sv =1 and sH/sv =0.5). Changes have only been made to the RRS key input parameters in order to simulate the changing loads during the face excavation process in tunneling. The critical part of this numerical modelling work that is under investigation in this study under each stress regime, is the period just after the excavation: i.e 4 hours; 16 hours after excavation; and finally after the complete curing (28 days) of the cement based components. The RRS are installed in three consecutive numerical steps as follows: a) the application of S(fr) on the rock surface in order to even it up for the RRS application; b) radial bolting; and c) installation of the reinforcing steel rebars, that form the reinforced beam. The results are varying and are strongly dependent on the imposed stress regime and they show in general the following tendencies: The axial forces on S(fr) show that S(fr) is almost overloaded during the first 4 hours in all 3 stages. More particularly: For the case with sH/sv =2 a) the axial forces on S(fr) and on the steel rebars are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed on the shear stresses in S(fr) and on steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged. For the case with sH/sv =1 a) the axial forces on the S(fr) are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed for the axial and shear stresses, as well as moments on the steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged."

I will not attempt to forecast either the future price of copper or the future growth of the copper industry; rather I would like to discuss the current trends experienced in the smelting and refining terms and conditions for sales and/or purchases of copper concentrates. A brief review of contract language and terms, together with a review of the common jargon, I believe, would be helpful. To accomplish this review, I will first list what I consider the four basic parts or sections of a basic ore contract and then illustrate basic terms with calculations.

"As underground mining continues to operate at deeper depths and in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, there has been an increased demand for mine designs to better reflect site-specific conditions, measurements, and observations with respect to ground control safety and stability. During the past 20 years, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed, validated and distributed a number of free software packages (ALPS, ARMPS, AMSS, ARBS, etc.) specifically aimed at providing the industry with ground control design tools for the evaluation of underground stability in coal mines. While these programs were initially developed as stand-alone software packages where all data reside on an individual or workgroup computer, modern day web applications have begun to migrate toward a “multiple-tier” architecture, allowing multiple users to access an application by means of an Internet connection.This article introduces a new Web-based platform for ground control software applications, webGroundControl (webGC). webGC provides users with a platform through which one can access NIOSH and other ground control design software utilizing a Webbased, multiple-tier architecture. This provides users with easy access to ground control designs, the ability to perform on-demand calculations, as well as increase online collaboration between operational personnel and engineers through a web server. The basic framework and, more specifically, the user-interface of webGC are defined and outlined within this paper. It is expected that the mining industry will rapidly embrace this new product and webGroundControl will be a new paradigm for mining engineering computer applications. Platform architectureAs Web-based computing technologies continue to advance and cloud computing gains momentum, web-based platforms for software applications are growing in popularity across all industries due to ease of product accessibility and distribution as well as data security. With the expansion of Internet connectivity on the surface and underground, there is an industry need to develop Internet-based applications for mine and ground control design (Barczak et al., 2016). Cloud-based products are already available for many industries and are slowly being developed for the mining and geotechnical industry. A notable example is the drillysis package, which is a cloud-based borehole logging database (Geosysta, 2017) or the Dynonobel package for on the fly blasting calculations (Dyno Nobel, 2013)."
