MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

The SO2-ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor generated by leaching of manganese nodules, after removal of minor quantities of iron and manganese, contained copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc and (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper from the leach liquor with LIX 84I, stripping of ammonia from the Cu-barren raffinate was carried out followed by precipitation of metal ions from the ammonia-stripped solution as sulfides. Leaching of the sulfide precipitate was carried out with H2SO4 to obtain a leach liquor containing 0.58 kg/m3 Cu, 2.67 kg/m3 Zn, 2.00 kg/m3 Co, 24.68 kg/m3 Ni and 10.0 kg/m3 (NH4)2SO4. After extraction of copper and zinc from the sulfate leach liquor with LIX 84I and D2EHPA, respectively, the solution was left with Co and Ni. Extraction of cobalt from the Cu- and Zn-free solution was carried out with 0.1 M PC88A and stripping of the cobalt-loaded organic was carried out with the cobalt-spent electrolyte (pH 1.4). Extraction of nickel from the cobalt-free solution was carried out with 90% neutral 1M NaPC88A followed by stripping of the nickel-loaded organic with 120 kg/m3 H2SO4 solution. Extraction of metal ions increased with increasing equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The maximum separation factors, with respect to the pH and extractant concentration variation studies, were 3796.7 and 15350.0, respectively. The extracted species for the metal ions were CoA2?3HA and NiA2?5HA.

This is the second in a series of articles on microcomputers and applications in the minerals industry. The first article (ME, Feb., page 129) discussed microcomputer terms and concepts. This article will discuss software for geology and mining. The third article will cover plant, administrative, and geotechnical software applications. Introduction Geology and exploration are areas where computers have a natural fit. Large volumes of data need to be tabulated, evaluated, and made into maps and reports that allow geologists and management to make a decision on a project or mine. Until recently, the programs that performed these tasks were cumbersome and not user friendly by any stretch of the imagination. Learning time to become an expert in these programs typically would be six months or more. The computers needed to run these programs are expensive mainframes. Several years ago, the use of minicomputers became popular because of their lower cost. Programs were adapted to fit these smaller machines and became friendlier. With the advent of micros, many programs. were rewritten and used the screen capability more effectively, thus providing a real advance in user interface. Programs and Price The definition of micro, mini, and mainframe is becoming blurred. For the purposes of this article, micro refers to either an eight- or 16-bit computer, costing less than $10,000 and, more typically, under $5,000. Mini refers to a 16- or 32-bit computer that typically costs more than $25,000. Mainframe refers to a 32-bit or larger computer that costs more than $250,000. There is a large gray area between micros and minis, and minis and mainframes. Technology and prices are changing so fast that the traditional definitions have become almost meaningless and price has become a better guide. With the arrival of the minicomputer, costs for hardware began to fall, but the programs have tended to remain unfriendly. In some cases, the minicomputer acted as a front end to the mainframe. Cost of both the programs and minicomputers could easily run a minimum of $70,000. A total cost of $200,000 would not have been out of line. The average geologist and company would have a great deal of difficulty justifying such a purchase. The advent of the microcomputer has changed all that. For $3,500 to $5,000, one can buy a 16-bit micro and a printer. Plotters with six pens are available for $2,000 that will produce a 280- x 430-mm (11- x17-in.) map. For several hundred dollars, software is available to act as a word processor, an economic spread sheet, or to perform ground water calculations. In fact, some programs are available for free. Some of these programs are relatively easy to learn. In addition, programs are being developed daily that are easy to use. Researchers from the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed field trials during coal mine rescue contests using simulated gas detectors in place of placards. The gas monitor simulator (GMS) devices replaced static, paper placards to deliver gas concentration data. Eleven teams were observed during the field contest, which was approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). GMS devices were given to three team members, the captain, and both gasmen. Observation of teams revealed that team members changed behavior by acknowledging and sharing information more often while using the GMS. As a result of this research, it has been demonstrated that under the existing contest format, the newly developed GMS device may be used with no adverse impact on team contest performance. Furthermore, when GMS technology advantages are used, contest realism is improved. In the future, competency assessment may be incorporated.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

The US economy continued to grow steadily in 1988, reaching an annual rate of $5 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion = 1012). The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals Raw steel production-a major con¬sumer of many minerals-rose 14% to 92 Mt (102 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. Voluntary Restraint Agreements with 21 steel exporting nations limited im¬port penetration to about 20% of the domestic market. The main purpose of this study was to design a modular/mobile coal preparation plant with a capacity of 300 t/h for Seyitömer B3 vein (almost 70% of the whole SLI deposit). Firstly, coal washing properties and washability curves were determined by sink and float tests. Then, equipment sizing, selection, flow sheet development, economic evaluation, investment and operating costs were determined for coarse (-150+18mm), fine (-18+0.5mm) and slime (-0.5+0.1mm) coals. Economic evaluation of the proposed flow sheet showed the feasibility and profitability of the investment.

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

Background Population growth and increasingly stringent regulatory controls on water quality across North America have resulted in municipal governments investing heavily in infrastructure to control what are known as Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs).These are events which occur when combined sewers exceed their conveyance capacity during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. The city of Atlanta, Georgia is one such municipality; with a population of over450,000 within city limits and a sewer system servicing 1.2 million including adjacent jurisdictions, the City of Atlanta has a Combined Sewer System (CSS) encompassing approximately 15% of its total 3,540 km (2,200 miles) of sewers. Atlanta’s CSO discharges to local watercourses began to draw fire from environmental groups in the1980s. As a result, in the early 1990s, the City constructed a series of CSO control facilities which provided screening and chlorination at seven CSO discharge points across the CSS watershed. Unfortunately, these facilities were not capable of handling all of the overflows generated due to heavy storm events; frequently, untreated water was bypassed around the treatment facilities. The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed that water quality standards were being violated by these discharges, and a suit was brought against the City to force a higher standard of compliance. As a result, the City entered into a federal Consent Decree which would bring CSOs into compliance with federal standards by 2007. A critical component of this plan was the design and construction of the West Area CSO Tunnels and Pumping Station. In February 2003 the City’s Department of Watershed Management retained the services of Jordan Jones & Goulding/Hatch Mott MacDonald/Delon Hampton Associates (JDH Joint Venture) to design and provide construction management ser-vices for the project, which was designed to capture combined sewage from three of the City’s existing CSO facilities on the northern end of the CSS watershed. The design consisted of two connected tunnels which would convey the wastewater originating from the North Avenue, Clear Creek, and Tanyard Creek CSO facilities to a submersible wet well pumping station located at the R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC). Since the majority of the effluent stream consisted of storm water, the City elected to design and construct a separate treatment plant. This plant was designed under a separate contract, and is currently under construction.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer (BWOAS) consists of 4,000m (13,200 ft) of 3.66m (12 ft)diameter tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. The project involves many new innovations, including: Slurry wall work shaft with excavation below the water table; Hybrid universal rings combining traditional steel reinforcement with fibers; New, full EPB Lovat TBM; Two component grout system pumped to the TBM from the surface; and, Linabond corrosion protection liner. The paper looks at the planning approach adopted to meet the various challenges presented, combined with an overview of progress to date.

Maintenance strategy selection plays a significant role in mining design. The nature of maintenance strategy selection is a complex multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem including both tangible and intangible parameters which are often in conflicting with each other. Moreover, when decision makers are uncertain in determining and defining the ratings and the weights of alternatives and criteria respectively, fuzzy theory provides an appropriate tool to handle the existing uncertainties. In this paper, a new fuzzy MCDM method based on the concepts of TOPSIS and AHP was proposed to evaluate the feasible maintenance strategy. The linguistic terms are employed to assess the ratings and weights. Fuzzy AHP is utilized to calculate the weights of the evaluation criteria; then, the rankings of alternatives are computed based on fuzzy sets theory and TOPSIS. A real world case study is presented to illustrate a potential application of the proposed model.

North of Antwerp central train station, two single-track tunnels for the high-speed train line between Brussels and Amsterdam were constructed. At the same time, the central train station was modified to a through station. Both 1.23 km tunnels are situated in the Antwerp sands and were constructed using a slurry shield machine. Due to the inner city location, the tunnels run over their entire length underneath structures, in some cases with only minimal clearance. The paper deals with these challenging situations. In addition, the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel lining and measures to limit settlements will be introduced.

There are many examples, historical and recent, from the underground coal mining industry where during emergency response the response and ultimately the outcomes, could have been significantly improved if adequate systems had been in place for the collection and management of relevant information preceding the incident, the acquisition of information during the incident and the use of the information for risk mitigation and decision making purposes. The subject and process of knowledge management is possibly the most critical for would be rescuers of endangered coal mine workers, as it has been demonstrated at numerous coal mine incidents that a lack of or mismanagement of crucial information can be fatal for both the rescuer and/or the endangered coal mine worker. This paper will underline the scope and importance of robust knowledge management systems for emergency response within the underground coal mining industry and the process by which it is being achieved within the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the NSW Mines Rescue Service.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. This is an update of an original dissertation on this topic by Lavallee, McIvor and Stolovitch (1992). A step-by-step, technical procedure used to measure and improve the performance of plant grinding circuits was adapted into a training program. ?Systematic Design of Instruction? was applied to: ? Determine if training was a suitable way to deliver this new technology; ? Define the technical content of the program; ? Select program specifications based on learner and context characteristics; ? Design, create and test prototypes of the training modules; and, ? Establish a process for plant implementation. The training program covers numerous skills that are extremely valuable for plant personnel, not only in the grinding area, but also for many other parts of the plant. This paper describes how new skills are brought into the workplace through designed instruction can be an effective alternative to hiring during severe skilled labor shortages.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential in a multitude of mundane and sophisticated applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts, medicine, and defense applications. The global supply deficit could be attributed to the destabilization of REE market that has, as a result, incentivized indigenous production of REEs. Cost-effective and environmentally benign opportunities are being explored for the production of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources including coal and coal by-products to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Healy coal mine and Wishbone Hill deposits in Alaska have been quantified for REEs and were found to possess elevated total REE concentrations as compared to world average levels (60– 70 ppm). The objective of the study was to concentrate the REEs in the froth phase by froth-flotation of the fine size fraction (< 75 μm). A Box-Behnken design of experiment was employed to ascertain the main and interaction effects of operational parameters on response variable by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Experiments were carried out to maximize REE recovery and concentration by modeling and optimization of three operating variables (frother dosage, pulp density (% solids), and collector dosage). Based on the results, the optimum flotation conditions for maximum recovery at an elevated concentration of REEs in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy sample and 10% solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic relationship between the input and response variable was found to be independent of collector dosage suggesting good surface hydrophobicity and floatability of the two coal samples.

This paper is a follow-up to the paper presented at the SME meeting in April of 1996. Since then, the El Abra facility has been started up, 9 months ahead of schedule, and has processed about 45 million tons of ore and produced over 700 million pounds of copper. For those unfamiliar with the El Abra materials handling and leaching facilities, a brief overview of the facility is provided. The paper will then deal in detail with such aspects of Conveyor 103, the long regenerative overland conveyor, including: actual running resistance starting and stopping procedures emergency brake test at 10,000 t/h Additionally, we shall take the opportunity to report on a catastrophic culvert collapse in October 1996, which stopped the conveyor abruptly at full speed and under high load condition, causing a belt breakage. We would like to use this opportunity to thank the management of El Abra and Cyprus Amax for providing assistance and allowing us to present this paper. The El Abra team deserves a great compliment for building this one billion dollar facility in record time in a remote area of a high-altitude desert with no existing infrastructure, and for bringing it so quickly up to full operating capacity. The El Abra management had to assemble a completely new operator team. Considering the above circumstances, it took a great effort by all involved to achieve success. The official performance test which was required by the lending banks was successfully concluded in November 1997.

Mill crushing drive systems are essential to cement producers. With the increased emphasis on operating efficiency, it is vital that these systems be dependable and reliable. No one needs the costs or headaches associated with unscheduled downtime or inefficient machinery operation. A reliable drive system starts with the proper selection of the ring, or girth, gear and continues through proper maintenance. Ideally, selecting the right girth gear brings together the gear manufacturer, the system designer and the end user. The gear manufacturer must know the details of the application, the demands that will be placed on the gear and the nature of the equipment to be driven. Similarly, the user and the system designer must be familiar with the variables that affect gear drive performance and service. For example, an application that places a torque load on the drive in excess of its rated capacity will result in gear tooth distress and, in severe cases, breakage.

INTRODUCTION Soft, near normally consolidated clays generally provide ideal conditions for tunneling using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) shields. It is easy to turn the clay into a low permeability, viscous spoil that can be pressurized to maintain the required face pres-sure. Despite this, there are records of relatively large, and often quite variable, surface settlements over EPB driven tunnels in soft clay. To understand this variation it is necessary to identify the various factors that contribute to settlement. Tunnels in soft clay are ideal for study these effects in the field, as an unsupported void will close almost immediately, due to the low shear strength of the soil. In the short term, deformation in a soft clay will occur at constant volume, so short term surface settlements can be related to movements at tunnel level. In this paper, data will be used from EPB driven tunnels in Singapore marine clay. In all of the cases discussed the lining consisted of precast concreted segmental rings erected in the tail of the shield. The marine clay in Singapore has been studied, among others, by Tanaka et al.(2001). The clay typically has a plasticity index of 40 to 60, and the undrained shear strength (SU ) can be derived from: SU = 0.22 svo&apos; where svo&apos; is the current vertical effective stress. Figure 1 shows a summary of undrained strength/depth plots used for design on two sections of Singapore’s North East Line. The stability of a tunnel in clay can be assessed by comparing the stability number (N) of the tunnel with the stability number at total collapse (NTC).
