What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

In the past ten years about 3000 wastewater treatment plants have been built in Poland. The result of this development has been a massive increase in overall sludge production. According to data supplied by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, 400,000 dry tons of sludge are generated every year in Poland (Koblak-Kalinska 1996). Still it is difficult to estimate the amount of sludge, which is used in agriculture or for reclamation purposes. However, it can be assumed that this comes to no more than 10 percent of all sludge produced in Poland on a yearly basis. Thus it became obvious that an urgent solution to this problem was needed. Local authorities in Silesia realized in the early 90?s that a demonstration was necessary to encourage the proper utilization of sludge. This was the basis for establishing the Biosolids Subpart of the Silesia Project, which addressed the use of biosolids in the reclamation of mining and smelting dumps (Stuczynski et al. 1996). Metal waste sites themselves are known to contain more than 87 million tons of waste (Pistelok et al. 1995). Each year this amount increases by approximately 400,000 tons. We realized that a simple solution for stabilizing these sites would be to cover them with vegetation in order to reduce leaching of toxic elements, as well as to keep metallic fugitive dust from entering the environment. The reclamation of smelter waste sites, which was carried out within the framework of the Silesia Project was a joint effort of local government, industry and international research institutions/agencies, including the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Center for Research and Control of the Environment (OBIKS), Virginia Polytechnic Institute and IUNG. One of the goals was to evaluate the possibility of adapting the rules of sludge management currently used in the United States to conditions commonly found here in industrial regions of Poland. However, the main objective of the Silesia Project was the development of guidelines concerning all aspects of sludge use for the reclamation of degraded lands and waste sites. Biological aspects related to reclamation of metal waste with the use of biosolids will be discussed in this paper.

One of the key elements of change in the mining industry has been the ever-increasing integration and coordination of previously highly segregated business disciplines, the extent to which the marketing and finance functions have evolved and merged within the mining industry. If one listens to the language of mine product marketers today, one hears terms like contango, backwardation, forwards, options, min/max, synthetics, swaptions, caps, collars, FRA's, spot deferreds, double bottom, head and shoulders. The list is endless and a glossary may be out-of-date even before the ink is dry. No longer can a marketer of mine products get through the day and, more importantly, keep his or her job merely by reciting statistics on supply, demand, prices and the jargon of quotational periods, delivery and payment terms. Walk into the office of any marketing department today, and computer terminals spewing on-line market prices and instantaneous news retrieval command the attention of all who enter. Traditionally, mining companies, particularly those in North America, took a passive view toward marketing their products and an even more passive view toward management of price risk. The typical, albeit simplified, gold producer of the 1970s and early 1980s spent all of its energy exploring, delineating, developing and producing a product that was placed by the mine gate. Like magic, anonymous buyers took it away and left piles of dollars in its place. No fuss, no muss and nothing to get in the way of more exploring, delineating, producing etc. The typical copper producer, meanwhile, was slightly more creative. Copper producers still spent most of their energy exploring, producing etc., but they at least acknowledged the identity of their customers. Many even went so far as to fabricate finished mine products into shapes and sizes that their ultimate customer needed. Wire, cable, sheet and extrusions were all in forms ready to be purchased by power companies, motor manufacturers and telephone companies. But, while production and costs steadily increased, research and development into new expanding markets was funded by little more than lip service. Competitors and competitive products steadily eroded market share and realized prices. The now-famous Business Week magazine cover that proclaimed "The Death of Mining" was an imminent reality.

This paper describes an application of a new approach to mine planning and production scheduling in a gold mine. The technique, limited to use in open pit mines (but not limited to gold), has been described previously (Gershon, 1987). The-computer program used is the HOPS software, which has been described previously as well (Gershon, 1988). The mine is scheduled for the production of 8,000 blocks out of a mine having 25,000 blocks (50 x 50 x 10). The technique is based on the concept of inverted cones (Gershon, 1987). While it does not provide a true optimization of results, it does approximate the optimal situation. As opposed to most scheduling software that only serves as a computerized notepad for the scheduler, the use of this approach allows for a scheduling intelligence to be built into the software.

Introduction Mining and minerals transportation spans the distance from the pit face and mine wall to the consumer. This transportation can be as simple as coal transfer from the mine and preparation plant by conveyor to a mine mouth electric generating plant. Or it can be as complex as copper ore transportation: concentrated, smelted, refined; drawn into wire and insulated; and cut into reels and transported to local industrial supply houses. The route of aluminum from the bauxite pits to the supermarket shelf in the form of household food wrap is another example of the potential complexity of minerals transportation. For perspective, however, mine to market minerals transportation can be split into three components: materials handling, transportation, and distribution. It should also be recognized that each mineral, market, producer, and consumer has unique transportation characteristics regarding costs, transportation mode, and alternatives in the transportation scheme. Some obvious considerations are the number of producers and consumers, the number of markets and customers the mineral serves. Concerning the latter, are you selling a million tons to one customer or a ton each to a million customers? Transportation volume About the only generalization that can be made about minerals transportation concerns the large volume of materials involved. No other industry compares to the mining and minerals industry in its huge movement of product in the crude, semi-processed, processed, fabricated, and converted states, as shown by the accompanying table of US mineral production. Whether it is crushed stone or sand and gravel moving by truck to a local market from local producers, or coal moving by 9.07 kt (10,000 st) unit trains from a mine to a power plant, or iron ore moving by lake vessel from the upper lake ports to the lower lake steel mills, mineral transportation volumes are huge. The nature of production and consumption affects the transportation mode. More than 60% of the coal moves by rail. The majority of iron ore moves by lake vessel. Ninety per cent of the sand and gravel and more than 80% of crushed stone moves by truck. In this paper we are going to look at some things that may happen to the industrial minerals industry in the next decade. First, some concepts and definitions. What are industrial minerals? Not everyone agrees on an answer to this. So let's look at some of the opinions. Some say that industrial minerals are non-metallic minerals. As you well know, metallic minerals are used as a source material for metals. Copper, lead, and zinc are extracted from metallic minerals. But, some metallic minerals are also used for other reasons. Bauxite is used as a source of alumina and aluminum. It is also used as proppant in well drilling, as an abrasive, as a refractory material, and as a source of aluminum-based chemicals. So bauxite is both metallic and nonmetallic. There are other examples, too. Bastnasite is a source of rare earth metals and alloys but its concentrate is used in fluid cracking catalysts. Phosphate rock is an industrial mineral when used for fertilizer, but it is also the source of phosphorus. Ilmenite and rutile are sources for titanium dioxide pigments as well as titanium. So the nonmetallic designation is not adequate to define industrial minerals. Some say industrial minerals are called such because they are consumed in industry. How about your cat's litter box? Is that industry? Huge amounts of montmorillonite, attapulgite and other sorbtive minerals are pelletized and calcined to make animal litter. Doctors are trying to get people to cut down on their salt consumption. They are against people eating industrial minerals. When diamonds are a girl's best friend, they are not industrial minerals; when they are grinding and polishing media, they are. These examples show that industrial minerals are not exclusive to industry. Regardless, here is my list of industrial minerals: Abrasive Materials - Bentonite Antimony (Oxide) - Borates Asbestos - Calcium Carbonate Attapulgite - Diatomite Ball Clay - Dolomite Barite - Feldspar Bauxite (and Alumina) - Fire Clay Fluorspar - Pyrophyllite Fuller's Earth - Rare Earths Graphite - Salt Gypsum - Sand and Gravel Kaolin - Silica Sand Kyanite - Soda Ash Limestone - Sodium Sulfate Magnesite - Spodumene (Lithium) Magnetite - Sulfur Mica - Talc Nepheline Syenite - Titanium Dioxide Perlite - Vermiculite Phosphates - Wollastonite Potash - Zeolites Pumice There is some overlapping. Fuller's Earth takes in some attapulgite, bentonite, and other minerals, depending on the market. Some would like to distinguish industrial minerals by the market emphasis they receive compared to fuels, metallics, and precious metals. But even there, strict logic fails. Some industrial minerals are commodities. They are sold on a price basis against industry product specs, usually in large volumes. Phosphate rock, potash, sulfur, salt, soda ash, and other materials fit this category. Some are almost custom-designed for end-use and meet performance specs. These are sometimes called functional or specialty industrial minerals. Examples of these are ground calcium carbonate, water-washed kaolin, cosmetic grade talc, filtration grades of diatomite, perlite, and vermiculite. Introduction The 150 MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power plant described in this article is the product of recent Bechtel experience in the industrial power and steam market, where the economic feasibility of fluidized bed projects has been proven. The ability of CFB boilers to burn low grade fuels makes it possible to burn low ranking coals or coal wastes. These include anthracite culm, coal mine rejects, and coal wash-plant-waste slurries. This article also addresses the impact of fuel characteristics on plant design. This includes solids handling, steam generation, sulfur capture, and auxiliary load requirements. The uncertain economic environment in which utilities must now operate has shifted the industry's interest away from large, base-loaded generating units to small, more versatile installations. Utilities now consider purchasing new generating capacity in smaller increments and staging its deployment to correspond with demand increases. In this way, they lower their risk in the increasingly hazardous art of long-range load forecasting. This strategy has many advantages. Multiple, smaller units have inherently greater turndown capability and better availability than a single larger unit of the same size. In addition, the smaller units will each have better cycling capability. And, with CFB combustion, the smaller units will have greater fuel flexibility. General plant description The 150 MW powerplant described here is a grassroots CFB unit. Fluidized bed technology differs from conventional combustion techniques. With CFB, solid fuel, together with inert material such as sand, gypsum, limestone, or ash from the fuel, is kept suspended in the combustion chamber. This is done by using the action of the fluidizing air distributed below the bed. Fluidization promotes the turbulent mixing conditions required for good combustion. The turbulence causes the entire mass of solids to behave like a liquid. The result is improved mixing. This allows heat to be generated at a lower and more uniformly distributed temperature that is below the ash fusion temperature of most coals. The fluidizing mechanism offers several other advantages over conventional combustion. There is less volatilization of alkali compounds, which cause deposits on boiler tube surfaces. And there is less sensitivity to the quantity and nature of the ash in the fuel. The low combustion temperatures prevent vitrification of the ash particles and minimize problems associated with furnace slagging. The ability to select from many fuels is one of the major advantages of CFB combustor technology. Fuels that can be burned in CFB plants to produce steam and electricity include: low grade coals with high ash or sulfur, lignite, peat, wood and pulp products, biomass, refuse, anthracite culm, petroleum coke, and oil shales. The plant's turbine cycle uses superheated steam at 12.4 MPa (1800 psi) and 538°C (1000°F), with single reheat to 538°C (1000°F). Two high pressure and three low pressure, closed, feedwater heaters are furnished. So is a deaerator, which is an open, direct-contact heater. The CFB plant exceeds EPA's New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for air emissions. The design limits sulfur dioxide (SO,) emissions to 0.25 kg/GJ (0.6 lb per million Btu). INTRODUCTION The demand for specialty metals in industrial applications is in it's healthiest state since the late 1970'8, and several specific markets are recording record sales. Such metals as gold, silver, zirconim., titanium, beryllium, gallium, germanium, the platinum group, and the lanthanides accounted for sales in excess of $2 billion in 1985 among the end uses covered in this report. Although specialty metals as a group have suffered the effects of recessionary pressures in the past, these metals have proved more resiliant than such large volume metals as copper and nickel. This is due to the unique physical properties they possess which makes the threat of substitution or replacement through technological development uneconomic. The outlook for these specialty metals is optimistic in electronics, catalysts, ceramics, and alloys, and their specialty status results .in a combined average annual growth in demand of 7% through 1990. WHAT MAKES THESE METALS SPECIAL? Such characteristics as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, catalytic activity, thermal stability, and optical properties allow the term specialty to be applied to these metals. More importantly, all of these metals possess more than one of these qualities, as shown in Table 1. [ ] These five major functions are important in the end uses for these metals, although the specific applications vary somewhat. Conductivity in term of low or high electrical resistance is of obvious importance to electronics manufacturers. Producers of circuit boards or semiconductors require such metals as gold, palladium, platinum, and gallium due to their low electrical resistivity. However, these producers also require such metals as beryllium in the oxide form for insulation components because of the compound's low electrical conductivity. Although the lanthanides' conductive characteristics are not particularly attractive in electronics, they are of great importance to alloy manufacturers producing permanent magnets for automotive and computer applications. Corrosion and wear resistant properties are extremely attractive to a number of end-use industries, particularly in view of the estimate by the United States Bureau of Mines that $10 to $50 billion in losses are experienced by U.S. industry due to equipment corrosion and $100 billion due to equipment wear. The strength of high purity titanium and zirconium make these metals the obvious choice for corrosion and wear resistance particularly in the chemical processing industry, where the ability to maintain integrity in corrosive environments is a must. Heat exchangers, nuclear control rods, and a number of parts in jet engines have benefited greatly from the use of these metals. However, such other specialty metals as beryllium, and the lanthanides also improve the wear or corrosion resistance in various products. For example, a beryllium-copper alloy contact maintains it's spring like character, and does not loose this character after repeated use, which could result in the loss of an electrical contact. Lanthanide, in the form of cerium oxide, is commonly employed in alloys used to produce catalytic converter casings for the purpose of reducing damage by corrosive road salt. In some instances, the catalytic activity of several of the specialty metals assists in the economic production of other materials. Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation's Thunder Mountain project in Valley County, Idaho, is one of the most remote active mining operations in the US. High altitude, heavy snows, and proximity to wilderness complicate operations in this environmentally sensitive area. Mining is conducted by conventional open pit techniques while processing utilizes on-off heap leaching and Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation. The project is one of a few similar operations which detoxify the leached ore prior to its removal from the leach pads. Both leaching and neutralizing ( detoxifying) circuits are closed and independent loops. After leaching, alkaline chlorine solutions destroy residual cyanide in the heaps. Calcium hypochlorite solution for the cyanide destruction is prepared by injecting chlorine gas into milk of lime solution.

Iron ore pellets made from concentrates produced from low grade iron ores are the primary iron bearing feedstock for iron making in North American blast furnaces. Steelmakers are demanding increasingly higher quality to provide for improved blast furnace productivity, efficiency, product quality and environmental compliance. Unfortunately, this higher quality iron ore product must be produced from the vast deposits of low grade iron ores that are becoming increasingly poorer in quality with regard to mineral liberation and ease of concentration. Since some of these low grade iron ores require grinding to as fine as 90% -500 mesh (25 microns) for liberation and since more of the silicious gangue and other minor undesirable constituents must be removed to provide the higher quality, we have come to depend on flotation to do the added work. Flotation technology and other preflotation unit operations must improve to meet these increasing demands. In many cases, flotation equipment, reagents and circuit operating performance have improved little during the last two to three decades. Mechanical flotation cells have grown from 14 cubic meters (500 cubic feet) to over 84 cubic meters (3000 cubic feet) to help reduce capital and operating costs; however, flotation metallurgical performance has not improved, Column flotation has only recently shown promise in improving metallurgical performance for iron ore rougher flotation. Previous column flotation success was mainly in scavenger and cleaner flotation steps for treating minerals other than iron ore. Although some new flotation chemicals have been developed for removal of silica and other minor constituents under widely varying mineralogical scenarios, recovery of iron mineral has not improved. The operation and control of flotation circuits have become more challenging because of the increasing workload on flotation. Better sensing, process control and operation of flotation circuits are essential as we go forward. Iron ore upgrading by flotation can be classified into either anionic or cationic methods. Anionic flotation of either iron oxide or silicious gangue is accomplished by collector type, pH control and selective chemical activation . Similarly, cationic flotation of silica or iron oxides is accomplished by collector type, activation and/or pH control. Removal of other minor constituents is achieved by using specialty chemicals under controlled conditions for preflotation, co-flotation or post flotation steps. Generally, anionic flotation is used for floating cleanly liberating crystalline oxidized iron ores such as hematite, specularite and martite. Earthy and hydrated oxides such as hematite and geothite can be upgraded with either anionic or cationic collectors after controlled dispersion of slimes or prior removal of slimes. Anionic flotation of silicious waste can be achieved by calcium activation of silica. For magnetic iron ores small amounts of locked silica particles (middlings) can be removed by cationic silica flotation, which is the only method in commercial use in North America today. Historically the efficiency of these iron ore flotation processes has been restricted by the loss of fine iron particles (minus 500 mesh) to the tailings product. New technology is required to overcome this loss and improve overall flotation performance. Development of technology for more selective separation of silica and other minor undesirable constituents from iron ore will provide both quality and cost benefits to the iron and steel producers. Development of future iron ore production in North America will face stiffer technical challenges. These new and undeveloped iron ore deposits are largely oxidized (non-magnetic) and by nature contain more slimes and other undesirable constituents. Unless other new technology evolves, flotation will be the major treatment process required to upgrade these difficult low grade iron ores.

Introduction Trends of successful discovery technology and psychology emerge from a thoughtful study of various companies' exploration programs. These subjective patterns can be generalized into groups of factors for discussion. Here, for convenience, factors that influence exploration success are separated into management and geologic concerns. Most successful discoveries have a demonstrably favorable management combined with a technically competent geologic input. Both are required. But the management input is decisive. Management factors include the correct definition of management's role; cost of exploration; time needed for exploration; commodity selection; and the fostering of autonomy, creativity, and confidence in the geology department. Geologic factors include imaginative technical competence (field as well as academic), correct development and use of empirical exploration or prospecting models, and dedication. Success comes to those entities that are properly managed and have technological competence. A management team that directs a company's business has been compared to a dynasty. The dynasty lays out policy and follows up with appropriate action. In that management's power is pervasive, the term is appropriate. Management's role is, however, more important. Many examples can be cited where the geologic input was impeccable. But management somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and the exploration success was turned to a third party's profit. Management Factors Management's role can be broadly generalized to four parts. These are to identify the commodities it seeks, define its part in the exploration process, develop a functioning exploration department, and have the desire to succeed. It must have confidence in its geologists and delegate to them the authority and responsibility they need to operate successfully. Head office management cannot do the thinking for a field staff thousands of kilometers away. There is no substitute for confidence and delegation of authority. Successes came to those who had the freedom to act. Motivation is a management requisite. Management's role is to prevent destructive, internecine political battles within the corporate structure. Most large US mining corporations have well known histories of political strife that have damaged their exploration efforts. Management's role must, above all, include the desire to succeed. There are cases where management has been confronted with a commercial exploration success, but their reaction is to request additional study or exploration. Perhaps the problem of bringing a commercial find into production is beyond their capabilities. But a bona fide discovery sent back for additional work commonly is lost due to that management. The cost of exploration is a factor that management must accept. A variety of studies made during the past 40 years shows the cost per discovery to be $25 million, $38 million, $200 million, or even $290 million. These figures are derived by dividing the total exploration expenditure by the number of discoveries. However, successful management dynasties have a much lower cost per discovery during their management regime. Asarco, from 1948 through 1963, had one of the lowest cost discovery rates in the world. Duval Corp., from 1948 through 1968, had comparably low discovery costs. Placer Development, from 1955, was equally successful. Western Mining in Australia has had one of the longest lived dynasties associated with exploration success. Time is vital in exploration success. Most successful exploration case histories stress sufficient time in project exploration so that the target is well tested. A large target cannot always be adequately evaluated by a few holes (strat or concept testing). Serendipity helps in exploring large targets, but it best operates in a lengthy program. Numerous case histories include pleasant surprises. But these came mostly after the 10th hole. Commodity markets are important factors governing exploration success. Management's decision to explore for a specific commodity can doom its effort if that product suffers from severe oversupply. Based on the findings within their report to Congress, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it had decided not to regulate mining wastes under the hazardous waste regulatory program. However, they found that some mining wastes are hazardous and may be causing environmental damage. Cyanide wastes from heap leach operations were included in this group. In evaluating the effects of cyanide use in mining one finds a significant lack of information on the fate of cyanide in soils. Cyanide attenuation and degradation of soils is important, because ground water is a major potential pathway for cyanide contamination. There is a strong potential for cyanide to be removed from solutions as it migrates through soils· by volatilization, chemical reaction, adsorption, oxidation and biological processes, but no definitive investigation has defined these mechanisms adequately to be able to predict the fate of cyanide in soils.

Ground water inflow into a mine and the re¬sultant impact on district hydrology can be pre¬dicted on a site specific basis once the ground water flow systems at the site are sufficiently well under¬stood so that a valid conceptual model can be de¬veloped. Ground water flow systems are controlled by the hydrogeologic properties of the materials at the, site, including hydraulic continuity along flow paths, and boundary conditions. Preliminary delin¬eation of hydrostratigraphic units for conceptual models frequently can be based on surface water data; specifically, spring locations and the gain-loss reaches of streams. Quantitative predictions of mine water inflow and its impact on regional hydrology require col¬lection and analysis of numerous types of data. Hydraulic conductivity must be defined quantita¬tively both parallel and perpendicular to bedding as well as areally for each hydrostratigraphic unit. The characteristics of the Davis shale in case his¬tory number 2 illustrate this concept very well. The storage characteristics also must be determined for each hydrostratigraphic unit and the potential or hydrostatic head should be quantified vertically and areally for each unit. The potentiometric measure¬ments in the Bonneterre Formation as discussed in case history number 2 illustrate this point. The data collection and data analysis techniques constitute the weak link in the analysis of mine inflow and district impact. The technology for char¬acterizing a mine site in the field has lagged behind the technology for mathematical simulation; we at¬tribute this development to the fact that computer modeling is relatively inexpensive compared to field data collection and analysis. On-site tests provide the best means of quan¬tifying hydraulic conductivity parallel to bedding and the storage characteristics of the unit. Pump tests with multiple observation wells provide the best information from on site tests. Hydrogeologie boundaries can be located from such multiple well tests. Multiport piezometers provide a means for determining the vertical potential in a single borehole. Borehole geophysics can facilitate the def¬inition of hydrostratigraphic units. Vertical hy¬draulic conductivity is difficult but not impossible to quantify with existing field test methods; labo¬ratory tests of cores fail to give a value represent¬ative of the field situation. The storage characteristics of a confined (artesian) hydro¬stratigraphic unit can be difficult to quantify when pumping changes the confined unit to an uncon¬fined (water table) case after depressurization and dewatering. Transmissivity and storage coefficient can be approximated to some extent for given field con¬ditions by computer modeling if enough is known about hydrogeologic boundaries. Modeling can be used in a trial-and-error approach to match transmissivity and storage coefficients to existing water level data corresponding to estimated discharge rates. A solution can also be obtained using a tech¬nique referred to as the inverse method. Unfortu¬nately, such a solution is seldom unique. Fracture flow models exist but practicality usu¬ally necessitates reversion to a basic Darcy flow model. Data requirements for fracture flow models could be difficult to fulfill where fracture aperture, spacing, orientation, and length are required. Ob¬taining such data at depth prior to mining would be impossible for any mine simulation in fractured media. We are of the opinion that most fractured media simulations can be accomplished using con¬ventional Darcy flow models by viewing the field problem on a macroscopic scale. The real challenge is to delineate hydrostratigraphic units properly in the field. The question of whether a broken-up fault zone is an aquifer or a barrier boundary is seldom simple. The fractures usually can be treated as an equivalent porous medium in either case. Only a few techniques exist for predicting un¬derground mine water inflow. These techniques fre¬quently are designed to evaluate shaft or tunnel inflow under steady-state head conditions in a sin¬gle layer rather than in multiple hydrostratigraphic units. Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

The longtime rule-of-thumb for conveyors was that only one cleaner was needed to solve carryback problems and help keep belt replacement costs under control. That is now being rethought. Belt-cleaning systems manufacturers, designers, and users are shifting to the view that multiple cleaners, placed at key locations on the conveyor and properly maintained, are necessary to solve today's material build-up (carryback) problems. There are still not many statistics on conveyor belt cleaning. But some recent studies support this belief. One study contends that the plant maintenance engineer's biggest problem is keeping the conveyor system running efficiently. The study also said the conveyor itself is responsible for most plant shutdowns. An unscheduled conveyor shutdown can cost more than $100,000/hr and run into millions in lost production in a given year. Other studies pointed out that belt replacement is the greatest single cost of the conveyor system. These studies allude to an important fact: cleaner belts lead to reliability and longer belt life. They showed that a critical relationship exists between characteristics of material being moved and the design of all major conveyor components. In practically all situations this relationship is keyed to belt cleaners, which have long been considered "add-ons" or "accessories." At the Fifth International Coal Utilization Exhibition and Conference, the Sammis Station-Ohio Edison Co. said it installed four belt cleaners on each problem belt. The company found that under certain conditions, when the coal is wet and sticky, carryback can be so heavy that it will flow over two cleaners. Before installing the cleaners, it was necessary to schedule a cleanup crew of four men each day and rent a large vacuum truck for an eight-hour shift. In addition, the company dredged the harbor three times a year, to remove coal spillage. Once the cleaners became operational, however, cleanup costs were reduced to a few days labor every third month. Renting the vacuum truck crew was also eliminated, and harbor dredging became necessary only once each year. In addition, the Mechanical Handling Engineers' Association (MHEA) in London pointed out that standards for cleaners are sorely lacking in the industry. MHEA called for instituting such standards in the future. They also reaffirm using multiple belt cleaners for increased efficiency. MHEA pointed out that some conveyor belts can be cleaned by one device, provided that it is correctly installed and adequately maintained. But MHEA recommended that a system approach be adopted, since this has proved more effective in practice. There are two main reasons why one belt cleaner fails to solve most carryback problems. First, management often reasons that the design of the current cleaner has probably been around for years, so it "must be good." This logic leads to a continued investment in keeping the current model operating, which includes pouring substantial sums of money in "housekeeping" manpower hours because the cleaner does not clean. Second, most single-belt cleaners are specified too late in the design process (indeed, some after the system is operational). This complicates matters since cleaning efficiency is directly proportional to when they are specified: the later the specification, the less efficiency. Cleaning equipment should be taken into consideration before the conveyor's structure is designed and fabricated. Otherwise the space available to install adequate cleaning equipment at the head pulley may be inadequate. Instead of matching conveyor with proper cleaner (as would occur during the design of the conveyor itself), designing a cleaning system "after-the-fact" becomes a matter of matching cleaner to conveyor. This limits choices in cleaners and, therefore, overall cleaning effectiveness. This is why after-the-fact designs of single belt cleaners are costly and rarely successful. While it is always best to specify belt cleaners during early design stages, the multiple-cleaner systems approach makes the timing of cleaner installation less critical. Because of flexible mounting hardware, a well-designed system can lead to 99% efficiency in cleaning and put an end to carryback even after a system is operational. Introduction Wear of pumps, wet cyclones and pipelines by suspended solid particles will impact their operating economies by limiting their useful life, reducing their reliability and increasing the amount of servicing. Erosion is considered a materials problem. The empirical solution consists of testing different materials in field applications. Such tests are time consuming and expensive. The prediction of localized wear rates, life estimates and appropriate material selection demand a better understanding of the slurry wear process in environments corresponding to those found in working equipment. Key words: Wear, Slurry abrasion, Coriolis erosion tester The slurry wear process Solid particles suspended in liquid generally move with the flow, but such particles deviate under the centrifugal and Coriolis forces encountered in pumps. The concentration of particles will increase, and a solid layer or bed may accumulate if the acceleration is directed against the flow passage wall. Large particles in dilute suspensions may impact the wall. dissipating their kinetic energies and removing material. However, particles smaller than about 11)(1 µm encounter great drag when moving through the liquid. and such par¬ticles have little kinetic energy left when they reach the wall. They cannot penetrate the stagnant boundary layers present in pumps. Therefore, small particles tend to form beds that slide along the wall, removing material by a process that could he called sliding erosion or wet abrasion. Wear by impact erosion from large particles in dilute slurries can he predicted by appropriate analytical and empirical methods. However, laboratory tests and calculations of wear rates that correspond to sliding erosion are more likely to correlate with field experience from wear under similar conditions. Specific energy Data from laboratory slurry erosion experiments have shown that the amount of material removed is approximately in proportion to the energy expended in the erosion process. Thus. the specific energy-energy expended in removing by erosion a unit volume of material-offers a simple, practical measure for the erosion resistance of materials. The concept was found to also apply to sliding erosion (Clark et al.. 1997). Generally, the study of the material-removal process in slurry erosion continues to remain a subject of research. Conceptually, if the flow velocities and accelerations could be calculated in a pump or pipeline, the energy dissipated at the passage walls could also be estimated, and the material removal rate would become known from the specific energy determined by laboratory tests. Slurry erosion testing Laboratory devices made specifically for slurry erosion testing may be grouped into the following: jet erosion devices, slurry pots and the Coriolis test machine (Pagalthivarthi and Helmly, 1992). Jet erosion devices use a slurry pump and nozzle to produce a high-velocity slurry jet that is directed at a flat material specimen, either perpendicularly or at some acute angle. Combined impact and sliding erosion are produced. but the processes cannot be separated, and the wear is difficult to assess except by weighing. Slurry pots consist of a cylindrical vessel containing the slurry of interest. In the slurry pot, test specimens are attached to a rotating arm. The samples are rotated in the slurry and experience local flow conditions that result in combined impact and sliding erosion. Wear depth measurements from detailed laboratory experiments have been successfully correlated with results from an analytical model of the process, and specific energy values have been calculated (Wong and Clark, 1995). In industrial use, the samples are weighed to determine the total material loss. Materials are ranked with respect to some reference material. The Coriolis erosion tester (Tuzson, 1984) consists of a rotor with a central cavity, from which two opposing radial passages lead out (Fig. 1). The slurry is fed to the centerof the rotor in one pass from a stirred overhead tank. The slurry particles are subjected to the Coriolis acceleration as they flow out through the radial passages. The material specimens are mounted into the radial passage walls facing the direction of rotation and are eroded by the particles that are pressed against them as they flow out radially. A narrow groove is worn into the sample within a few minutes, using a few gallons of slurry. Material removal is estimated accurately from profilometer traverses across the wear scar at different locations. The energy dissipated by the particles can be estimated, which leads to a well-defined experimental value for the specific energy.

To many who for years have scrutinized the US mineral supply picture, recent, often strident debate on present-day security of many critical mineral supplies echoes sentiments repeatedly expressed in the past decade by the minerals industry. At no time since the last world war has such a flurry of public concern been expressed for the economy's mineral sector. Where once mineral availability problems were relegated to the newspaper's business section or not reported at all, today comprehensive analyses of our international mineral posture are discussed in detail by some of the nation's most respected and widely read periodicals. In past years, disinterest was also experienced whenever the mining industry attempted to carry its message to Congress, the public, and the government's executive branch. Among minerals professionals, the past decade was a time of particular frustration clue to serious erosion ill US ability to competitively produce the vast array of raw materials vital to the economy acid national defense. Fervent calls for immediate attention were simply not answered. These professionals have understood that mining and agriculture are the primary sources of wealth, fulfilling virtually all needs and creating and sustaining jobs. Why then has it been so difficult to raise the consciousness of the American public, and even more surprisingly, of the government and national leadership? The answer to this question is perhaps endemic to how government functions, but pore important, it begs that mining professionals capitalize on the opportunity and the attention now at hand. Carefully conceived and implemented actions by both private and public sectors are needed more than ever before in the past 35 years. To this end, it is vitally important to seek out and resolve the root causes of supply problems and not dwell on superficial solutions. The following discussion attempts to establish a simple framework to view this process. It does not presume to be an exposition of cause and effect, but hopefully identifies some needed steps. Growing Awareness in the 1970s Of all events stimulating current concern, certainly the OPEC oil embargo has left the deepest impression. It was inevitable that after such a shock, man. Americans would begin asking whether the US was as vulnerable to cutoffs of minerals as it was to oil cutoffs. Then, when serious trade security questions surfaced in sonic mineral-rich nations in Africa and the Persian Gulf, the ominous term ''resource war" began to be heard. Countries such as South Africa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have suddenly become key areas for testing our national security resolve. As the US witnesses the influx of Marxist influence in many sub-Saharan exporting nations and the rising threat to free world access to critical materials and energy, the assurance of adequate supplies is becoming a national issue at last. The US is now learning that self-sufficiency for many vitally important mineral commodities has vanished. Of course, it did not vanish overnight; it had been leaking away for years, and the trend was noted by industry and a few in government. Within the minerals community, suspected weaknesses in America's resource posture were sought and found. As a result, the country's heavy reliance on foreign sources fur more than a score of minerals, many extremely vital to security, has been forcefully documented and the case for drastically altering the supply unbalance hits been proposed. The renewed concern for national defense is central to almost all proposals for minimizing US foreign mineral dependence. It is not surprising that many of the voices heard today on the dependency issue are active members or alumni of the militate establishment. Unfortunately, their almost total focus on the security aspects of dependency has tended to obscure important underlying issues which are not directly defense-related. Some of the proposals advanced might mitigate the deeps-dency problems, but they still fall short of curing the underlying problems that have led to a steady loss in mineral self-sufficiency. In almost all instances these problems call be traced to increasing government influence on the free market minerals economy. Some national security proponents seek to attain total self-sufficiency in minerals. Such arguments must he tempered by existing realities. It is easy to demonstrate that the US obtains substantial quantities of sonic essential minerals from potentially insecure sources abroad. That the US will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. It is important to understand that mineral dependency does not irrevocably lead to vulnerability. Unlike oil, no mineral commodity combines the same degree of universal indispensibility and centralized foreign control of supplies. Moreover, although many US-required minerals are produced by fewer countries than export oil, those minerals cannot approach petroleum in economic or industrial importance. Finally, most foreign supplies come front friendly, secure nations such as Canada, 'Mexico, and Brazil. This, aid more, constitutes a vital element in US economic health as a world trading nation. Four computerized approaches for coal blending are described and their strengths and weaknesses are explored. Spreadsheet analysis Other than word processing, spreadsheet software is the most commonly used software. Its wide availability and ease of use are two desirable features that have led many to try to adapt it to the purpose of coal blending. These are the two main advantages of this approach. To use a spreadsheet for coal blending, each row of data represents one source of coal. Each column represents a quality of the coal, with the last column specifying the tonnage of that coal in the blend. The calculated figures are the blended qualities, which can be programmed to appear in the bottom row. A trial-and-error approach is then used to develop the best blend. Inserting any blend in the last column provides the blend characteristics at the bottom of the page. If any specifications are not met, the blend can be changed, all calculations being immediately updated. This process is repeated until all specifications are satisfied. A third advantage of this method is that it is exactly the procedure that one would go through if doing this by hand. With a spreadsheet, many more blends can be evaluated in much less time, allowing the designer to try to improve over satisfactory blends to find the best of them. The resulting improved blends or cost savings are a fourth advantage of this approach. There is only one major disadvantage of using the spread-sheet. This is that most probably the best blend is not found. As an inexpensive introduction to computer-assisted blending, which can be easily understood and cost just a few hundred dollars, this is a recommended place to begin. Computerized search Computerized search approaches represent crude first attempts at letting the computer design the blend. Unfortunately, the blends found by these programs are very often less satisfactory than those developed manually. The way these techniques work is that they design, according to some predesigned pattern, a number of different blends and then quickly evaluate them. It is then straightforward to select the best from this sample set. The quality of the results depends on the number of blends designed, the way they differ from each other (the search procedure), the number of sources available, the number of quality specifications, and the severity of the specification limits. Good results are usually obtained for small, simple problems. At best, the results obtained are inconsistent from one blend to the next. Programs of this type are advertised in the mining literature. They usually mention how many different blends are evaluated, making it clear that this is more than can be tried manually. Expert systems Expert systems use a source of information known as a knowledge base. The knowledge base, usually a set of if-then rules, attempts to reconstruct the deductive reasoning process of an expert in some job capacity. For coal blending, the usual trial-and-error process has an easily recognized pattern of rules that are followed to try to find a better blend. By following these rules, it is possible to home in on the best blend without the exhaustive search required by the previous method and without the manual manipulation of the spreadsheet approach. The use of an expert system accomplishes this. One of the rules may say something like "if BTU is out of spec, then add more in the blend from a source having a high BTU and subtract some from a source having low BTU." In other words, it goes through the trial-and-error process. The process continues until all specifications are achieved and can continue further to try to optimize the cost. Of course, less simplistic rules are also needed. One set of rules would determine maximum changes in the tonnage added or deleted to the blend or from any one source. Other rules would be needed to determine which quality to improve if two or more are out of spec. At this level, the process of building the knowledge base provides the engineer with a deeper understanding of his or her own thought processes. The advantage of obtaining better blends is clear for this approach. Two more advantages should also be apparent. One is that it follows the same common sense logic that is used when doing the blends by hand or by spreadsheet, making it easy to understand. The other is that, like the search procedure, it designs the blend rather than just analyzing manually designed blends. Thus, it has all the good features of both approaches discussed thus far while providing improved results over each. A final advantage is the ease of use and ease of development. The expert system shells that are on the market are very easy to use and can be run on microcomputers. Linear programming Linear programming is an algebraic tool that solves a set of linear equations to yield an optimal solution to a problem. The optimal solution is based on the linear model so the results are only as good as the ability of the linear model to accurately portray the reality of the problem situation. It is fortunate for the coal blending problem that a linear model can be devel¬oped that reflects exactly the problem that is required. It is no mystery why the mining industry has such lofty safety standards. In dealing with Mother Nature and gravity, the combination of the two can create significant hazards from high wall and tunnel collapses to huge landslides. The loss of production from a major disruption could be enormous. The price tag on the loss of human life is immeasurable. The evolution of geotechnical instruments and software has been ongoing for years. But the biggest innovations have occurred during the era of cell modems, internet, and wireless networks, allowing for real time data and alarms to be delivered globally anywhere and anytime to one?s computer, laptop and smartphone. Yet in some ways you can thank the urban construction projects for developing much of the technology in use by today?s mines. Due to the density of population and the billions in dollars of structures and infrastructure in cities throughout the US and the world, urban projects have faced intense scrutiny for years. Out of this scrutiny was born the necessity of real time automated monitoring of instrumentation and sensors, a defence against catastrophic failures, and real time early warning systems through alarms that can and do saves lives. It is also possible to identify areas of concern with subsequent remediation prior to failure.
