Tapered clamping devices have been used successfully over the years to transmit torque and bending loads from conveyor drives to conveyor belts. Proper design and application is important in the successful operation of these key components. This paper includes a historical review of component design and application and an overview of the important dynamics and limiting factors. Actual applications and simulation models are used to demonstrate the correct use of these devices.

Shortly after Asarco Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division from Kennecott in 1986, the company began an expansion program to increase copper production. The Bechtel Corp. oversaw engineering procurement and construction management for a new in-pit crusher, overland conveyor system and concentrator facility. Construction started in May 1990 on these facets of the expansion project. The concentrator was commissioned in February 1992. The Ray concentrator uses a single-line, semiautogenous grinding circuit (SAG) with a design through¬put of 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd). In the early 1960s, Kennecott conducted pilot plant grind tests of Ray mine ores to determine their amenability to SAG and autogenous grinding methods. Those tests, though, were not followed up. During 1973 and 1982, Kennecott conducted additional pilot testing on some of the softer ore types. In 1989, Asarco ran a final series of SAG pilot grinding tests at Lakefield Research, which became the basis of the new Ray concentrator grinding circuit. Even though pilot test work demonstrated that some of the Ray ores gave satisfactory results during the autogenous grinding tests, the SAG option was selected for the primary comminution device. Due to the wide range of mineralogies encountered in the Ray ore body, selective mining and blending of these ores would be required to achieve the necessary production efficiencies and throughput rates using an autogenous grinding circuit.

Due to special job or client requirements, there will always be some variation in the philosophy of organizing and controlling construction under a project management contract. In typical cases, however, some standard procedures apply. Controls on a construction project are best described only in general terms. They should apply to the total job and can be most effective only when all pieces of the job organization fit together to support a control system for the entire project. Controls are more than a system of reports, schedules, and tabulations-they are the result of an integrated organization dedicated to getting a job done on time and within budget. One of the most important aspects of project control is the construction organization. It must include the right people, facilities, and site equipment, as well as the authority to do what's necessary to accomplish the work. This should be set up to function with as little involvement from off-site or the home office as possible. However, the jobsite construction group must work within established policies and guidelines and is subject to continuous off-site or home office monitoring. In other words, the job-site leaders need to have a clear definition of their responsibility, their authority, and the necessary people and equipment to make things happen. This research contributes to BioMinE (http://biomine.brgm.fr), an integrated European Union project of the Sixth Framework Programme. The general objective of BioMinE is the development and integration of innovative, environmentally friendly, biohydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of metals from primary and secondary resources within Europe. The work presented in this paper deals with the initial plan of study on the sustainable use of solid wastes derived from bio-processing of European metal bearing resources. The approach involves solidifying the waste into cementitious waste composites analogous to controlled low-strength materials (CLSM). The aim is to achieve composites of adequate mechanical, physicochemical and environmental integrity, thus providing a sustainable solution for dealing with such bulk products which are conventionally unmarketable and therefore normally discarded to landfill. Assessment has been based on largely ?model? wastes anticipated to be similar to bio-processing wastes. These include an ochreous mine water sludge and an industrial goethite residue. The work indicates that wastes containing high iron and calcium contents, typical of products from bioleaching of concentrates, could be beneficially reformed as CLSM of appropriate compressive strength. Due to the high water contents of these composites, porosity and hydraulic conductivity were correspondingly high. Flow-through leach tests showed some resistance to immobilisation of toxic elements. Work is continuing to reduce the risk of toxic elements leaching under environmental conditions. This will include laboratory-scale encapsulated systems of CLSM, designed and tested to produce a novel type of engineered fill structure.

With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

One function of mining is to supply oil shale of the required grade and characteristics to surface retorts. The mining methods must he safe, efficient, and environmentally acceptable. Although the Bureau of Mines no longer conducts research on methods of mining fossil fuels, including oil shale, its many years of activity in that field resulted in a significant body of findings. This article summarizes some of these findings, with respect to oil shale mining. The large areal extent of Green River formation oil shales and the diversity of geologic, hydrologic, topographic, and other conditions, preclude the use of any one single mining and waste management technique. Instead, in most instances, methods and equipment will be chosen to meet site-specific conditions. Such methods include conventional surface mining (open-pit and strip), underground mining (room-and-pillar, sublevel stoping, caving) and in situ extraction (true in situ from surface drill holes and modified in situ from underground retorts containing rubblized oil shale). Combination or hybrid systems may prove suitable. Both surface and underground backfilling of spent shale waste may be practiced. Tremendous amounts of oil shale must be mined, processed, and the waste shale properly disposed of in order to meet projected industry production goals. For example, about 1.4 tons of oil shale averaging 117 L of shale oil per ton are required to produce one bbl of oil. A plant with a daily production of 8 dam' (50 000 bbl) of oil would thus require some 68 kt of raw shale daily. This is more than the average daily production from any underground mining operation.

A new sense of urgency permeates the mining industry concerning maintenance. Mining's continuous process environment demands around-the-clock maintenance support. And profitability conscious mining operations require that production targets be met on time - and economically. These goals require nothing less than an effective maintenance program. In turn, the effectiveness of the maintenance program depends on quality information: easily procured, complete, timely, accurate, and properly used. Information picture is changing Some of the fully integrated, mainframe maintenance information pro¬grams of better days remain. Their upkeep and cost of operation, though, is becoming more difficult to justify. Some operations, faced with production cutbacks a few years ago, downscaled and found they liked it. Now, during an upswing, these operations question the need for the more elaborate, administrative-heavy programs they used to operate. Package programs are not taking their place. Too often, the packages are vague and generic. Some vendors claim that if their offerings work in a hospital complex, they must work in an underground mine. That is not so. Maintenance information in the mining industry is different. The situation has changed There are now smaller, self-contained maintenance groups whose information needs are different. These include an electrical crew in a smelter, an underground mobile equipment shop, or a remote service shop between several distant operating pits. These working environments have changed the character of the information needed as well as the methods for obtaining and using it. Operations-maintenance link In coming back from a downturn, operations people realize that their ability to meet production targets hinges on reliable equipment and avoidance of downtime. They have become familiar with the need to use maintenance services effectively. They also want quality maintenance information. When coupled with the sense of urgency about maintenance, a business-like working environment emerges that has significant new differences in both work control and information. Work control impact Work control has been streamlined to improve communications. Supporting information has been streamlined as well. • Verbal orders are the rule rather than the exception to quickly bring a multi-craft crew to the flotation section or a pit crew to a disabled haulage truck. • Written work requests and work order forms are seldom used, or even needed. Rather, electronic work control logs permit operations to request work, maintenance to acknowledge it, get ready, and do it - quickly, without delay. • Routine servicing is triggered by operating hour accumulation (mobile equipment) or tons of throughput (fixed equipment). Operations is now taking the initiative in delivering mobile equip¬ment to the "bad order line," or switching to a bypass conveyor. INTRODUCTION The attempt to interprete lung cancer incidence caused by inhaled radon decay products in items of radiation dose raises the question of the relevant dose. The various dosimetric approaches published by now are characterized by an increasing complexity in the structure of the models used. Ranging from organ doses to microdosimetric specific energy distributions in the cells at risk, a significant trend from the macroscopic to the microscopic scale can be observed. Since tumors originate preferentially in the basal cells of the lobar and segmental bronchial epithelium, these cells are regarded as the critical target for inhalation carcinogenesis. The evaluation of basal cell doses is, therefore, the main objective of lung dose assessments. Various dosimetric models have been published in the past (Altshuler, Nelson and Kuschner, 1964; Haque and Collinson, 1967; Harley and Pasternack, 1972; Hofmann, Steinhäusler and Pohl, 1979, 1980; Jacobi, 1964; Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James , Greenhalge and Birchall, 1980). Due to incertainties of physical and biological parameters involved and the application of different anatomical and physiological models the claculated doses are varying up to one order of mangitude. Independent of the choice of these dosimetric models applied to the calculation of lung doses, deposition, clearance and resulting dose are affected essentially by the properties of the inhaled aerosol as well as by personal characteristics. Both the properties of the exposed individual as well as of the inhaled environmental atmosphere have to be considered in radiation protection. It is the main objective of this paper to illustrate the influence of both parameter sets on basal cell doses by varying the above parameters. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Though it might be more convenient for radiation protection calculations, the biological "man" cannot be represented by a uniform standard man. In Tab. 1 these personal characteristics which cause the variability of man are listed together with the region of their effectiveness. In the following the influence of these parameters will be discussed with regard to lung dose assessments. Besides these factors the great biological variability of all anatomical and physiological parameters involved as well as pathological alterations due to lung diseases cause additional variations in lung dosimetry. [ ] Age Age can be considered as the most important personal factor influencing the anatomical structure of the lung between birth and about 15 years of life. This period is characterized not only by an enlargement of already existing respiratory units but also by structural changes. Besides these anatomical alterations deposition is strongly dependent also on respiration parameters, such as tidal volume (TV) and respiratory frequency (RF). Whereas RF decreases with progressing age in an exponential manner, TV increases significantly resulting finally in a growth of the respiratory minute volume (RMV). Also mucus clearance in the infant might be more effective than in the adult, though no reliable experimental data are available. Superposing all these age-dependent changes mean basal cell doses are higher for children by about a factor of 2 than for adults living in the same radioactive environment (Hofmann, 1981). In the adult the following alterations of respiration standards with age are reported: total lung capacity diminishes with age, functional residual capacity is unchanged or increases with age and the dead space rises slightly with age (ICRP, 1975). The influence of these lung capacities on deposition, however, can be regarded as insignificant. Due to the ageing process mucus velocities my be considerably smaller in older people. This effect can also be superposed by the simultaneous influence of ciliatoxic effects of cigarette smoke and air pollutants or other bronchial diseases. Since the lower age limit for occupational exposure is about 18 years, age can be disregarded in the uranium mining industry for the determination of radiation doses, though lung cancer induction is significantly dependent on age.

The energy structure and consumption ratio in China determine the practical demand for the collaborative mining of coal and co-associated resources. The multi-layer mining of coal, uranium, coalbed methane, and oil and gas co-associated resources, represented by the Ordos Basin, Junggar Basin, and Tarim Basin, faces numerous challenges. Additionally, coal has been found to coexist with various mineral resources in 33 coal-bearing basins worldwide. The scientific issues related to the multi-layer development of coal related co-associated resources urgently need to be addressed. This paper discusses the unique challenges and potential solutions in the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources. The challenges include large extraction space, high mining intensity, intense overburden movement, rapid surface subsidence, and severe overburden damage due to repeated mining disturbances. Proposed solutions include the establishment of a correlation mechanism between multi-layer mining and the carrying capacity of the overburden environment, analysis of the impact characteristics of multiple field couplings, and exploration of their superposition evolution laws. The paper also proposes the development of a comprehensive evaluation and prediction system for overburden environmental capacity loss, a global sensitivity analysis model for overburden environmental capacity, and an intelligent identification and early warning system based on multi-source information fusion. These solutions aim to achieve scientific and precise mining with minimal overburden environmental capacity loss. And the multi-layer development of coal-related co-associated resources is a complex task that requires a multidisciplinary approach and innovative solutions, and further research is needed to validate these strategies and explore new methods and technologies for efficient and sustainable extraction.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

This paper describes a practical technique to estimate the size distribution of large volumes of rock fragments, including blasted benches, waste dumps and heap leach sites. Images are obtained from a site using a standard video camera and downloaded onto the computer. Image processing algorithms are used to delineate the individual rock fragments in the images, followed by the calculation of the area and shape of each fragment. Statistical calculations are then performed to estimate the complete size distribution of the fragments. The accuracy of the technique has been assessed with a number of field validation studies.

INTRODUCTION For the construction of several kinds of structures which pass through under railways, we have recently developed an effective and new tunnel construction method, aiming at more secure train operation during the construction as well as the rationalization in the construction works for such structures. Most important in carrying out the construction works for the structures under railways is how to maintain the safe operation of trains. For such construction works, temporary supporting structures and supplemental works have been often applied, for which high cost and long period for the construction have been required. While, this new tunnel construction method has the feature that it is capable of constructing definitive structures for various purposes, which, at the same time, acts as the temporary supporting members for protection of railways. Therefore, this method is now drawing much attention in that higher safety of train operation, low construction cost, and shorter construction period are accomplished, minimizing the period required for slackening the train speed during the construction works.

INTRODUCTION Only in recent years have the environmental hazards associated with mining and tunneling operations been fully acknowledged and determined remedial action undertaken. The nature of these excavation operations leads to a wide diversity of hazards spanning mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental, and physiological. The most insidious of these are unquestionably the environmental ones which have the greatest long-term effect and are the most difficult to pinpoint and monitor. It is the atmospheric contaminants that lead to a significantly greater illness and mortality rate among miners. Dust is the most prevalent, hence most important of the atmospheric contaminants. Respirable particles lead to diseases characteristic of many mining operations: coal workers pneumoconiosis, asbestiosis, silicosis, talcosis, anthrocosis, etc. But toxic and suffocating gases can be equally insidious and the most innocuous pollutant, methane, leads to the most imminently disastrous results of all - explosion and fire. This means that truly effective monitoring of the environmental hazards in tunneling cannot be limited to a few simple standard check measurements. It must include the most precise measurements we can make for specific, documented hazards and even for factors, such as noise and heat stress, not immediately obvious as hazards. The Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act and more recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards are clearly designed to match such effective monitoring. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ mining (ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits. It used light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and textural features of these samples. This included the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channel ways. Low-grade disseminated deposit types from the western US were found to contain fracture- hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data in order to understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching the ore minerals.

A discussion of the practicalities of carrying out a material balance using simple nodal sensitivity analysis is given. The calculation of the errors involved is reviewed and the concept of co-variance examined through computer simulation. The use of co-variances in such calculations is shown to be practically insignificant. The method proves to be rapid and relatively accurate provided the circuit topology is correct.

In Australia and America, encroachment by conflicting land uses, zoning restrictions, and the "not in my backyard" syndrome make it increasingly difficult to access high-quality aggregate resources located near the market areas. Attempts by government agencies in America to protect aggregate resources for future development have met with varying degrees of success. The State of Queensland, Australia, designates aggregate resource areas as Key Resource Areas, which protect the resource and the routes to transport the resource, provide a separation area from incompatible land uses, and indicate the likelihood that the area is free from conflicting social or environmental issues.

Water movement and water chemistry were monitored in the unsaturated zone at two sites in fluvial tailings deposits along the Arkansas River near Leadville, Colorado. One of the sites was remediated by the incorporation of lime and biosolids into the soil. Preliminary results, based on data collected during the 11 months following remediation, indicate that differences between the two sites can largely be attributed to heterogeneity of the deposits. Remediation has increased the alkalinity in the upper soil zone, but as of yet, there is no indication that soils at depths greater than 30 cm have been affected.
