In his keynote address at the 18th International Minerals Processing Conference (IMPC), R.P. King, director of the University of Utah Comminution Center, said "it will be the application of very fundamental physical principles that is likely to bring major advances in comminution technology (IMPC, pp. 39-45)." It is evident from the literature published in 1993 that many of these fundamental studies, particularly as they relate to single-particle fracture mechanics and mineral liberation, are starting to bear fruit. The beginnings of fundamental mathematical models for design, scale-up and control of comminution systems are now taking shape. Modeling/fundamentals Population balance models (PBM) have been used to describe grinding systems for 20 to 30 years. However, Williams and Meloy (IMPC, pp. 73-79) pointed out some of the inherent problems with this modeling approach and that there is no unique solution for the unconstrained PBM for grinding. Many of the current constraints used to back-fit selection and breakage functions were also shown to have problems. The need for a more fundamental means of determining these parameters was indicated.

This paper summarizes the benefits ofusing an in-situ analyzer in a sampling and valuation program. The tests and studies cited quantify the problems associated with current conventional sampling techniques and contrast conventionally-obtained results with those obtained through in-situ analysis. Data are presented to show the improved precision in valuation resulting from the in-situ method. Greater precision in estimating the mineral content of unmined ground becomes increasingly important as mines strive for optimum exploitation of their deposits. As the following analysis shows, the variable distribution of minerals within a deposit, along with the difficulty and the cost of high density sampling limits the precision which is currently possible in practice. An inherent problem exists in the conventional method of sampling. The erratic values of ore grade necessitate the collection oflarge numbers of samples for statistically accurate valuation and ore reserve estimation. Owing to the cost of manpower, current sampling techniques do not allow for the collection of sufficiently large numbers of samples. The most common method of sampFng in current practice is chip sampling, although bulk sampling is sometimes used. The intent of sampling is to obtain an estimate of the value of blocks of ground prior to mining. This information is used to plan the rate and sequence of mining, yet the sampling intervals which are possible in practice cause these block estimations to be ubject to considerable uncertainty. This inevitably leads to mcorrect mining decisions which may be vy costly.

Alaska, with about 74% of the US continental shelf, is largely unexplored for placers in its vast shallow marine waters. Nevertheless, there are numerous occurrences of marine minerals including gold, platinum, and cassiterite. Offshore dredging has recently begun in the Nome area. State and Federal agencies are preparing additional acreage for leasing. With 76,200 km (47,300 miles) or 54% of the US coastline, Alaska is a vast, largely unexplored frontier for shallow-water marine placers. Despite the general lack of mapping and only sporadic past prospecting, many prospects are known and a major mining operation for gold has recently begun offshore of Nome. Due largely to the demonstrated success of the Nome operation, the US Minerals Management Service is preparing to conduct a lease sale of additional acreage further offshore from Nome. And future sales are being considered elsewhere by both the Federal and state leasing agencies.

The paper summarizes the current state of development of simulation models for SAG and FAG mills, and gives the results of recent investigations of the physical processes occurring in autogenous grinding. The breakage process is treated as the sum of three regions of breakage actions: normal breakage caused by nipping of particles between media (steel balls or pebbles); abnormal breakage caused when the particle or lump is too big in relation to the media to be readily nipped; self-breakage resulting from the chipping fracture and abrasion of the tumbling action of rock lumps. Each region of breakage action has associated specific rates of breakage and primary progeny fragment distributions.

Comminution is the single most expensive operation in mineral processing. It consumes about 50% of the energy required for mineral extraction (Agar, 1976). Current comminution technology is both energy-intensive and inefficient. A novel noncontact comminution process concept was developed in this study, whereby selective lib¬eration of minerals from an ore could be potentially achieved. The process involves application of electric and ultrasonic energy to liberate minerals from gangue particles. Introduction The mineral industry is a large user of energy in the US. Energy usage is increasing as the grade of ores processed decreases. It is es¬timated that comminution of ores uses about 32 000 kWh (115 trillion kJ), or 2% of the electric power produced in the US (NMAB-365, 1981). Among other minerals, ce¬ment, iron, and copper processing plants are the largest users of en¬ergy in comminution. Very little of this energy used in conventional grinding (about 1%) is used to gen¬erate new surface. The remainder is wasted (Table 1). Thus, there are substantial energy-saving and economic incentives to improve the efficiency of crushing and grinding techniques for mineral recovery. With an energy efficiency of only 1%, it would seem possible to devise methods to significantly improve comminution technology. This requires that breakage force be applied only where needed, not indiscriminately as in a conven¬tional ball mill (NMAB-365, 1981). Can apparatus and methods be de¬ veloped for large-scale commer¬cial use that allow energy to be fo¬cused at intergranular bounda¬ries? If this can be done, mono¬mineral grains would remain in¬tact and the grinding action would be selective and substantially more efficient. The novel comminution process concept described in this paper uses a combination of electric and ultrasonic energy. This energy breaks the ore and selectively lib¬erates minerals. The process has also been termed a two-stage or electroacoustical comminution process (Goldberger, Epstein, and Parekh, 1982). The mineral grain boundary is usually the weakest area in an ore. By applying electri¬cal energy to the ore, the rock frac¬tures mostly at grain boundaries. At the same time, the electric shock creates secondary hairline fractures in the ore. Additional application of ultrasonic energy to this ore provides further break¬age. The concept was proven on a molybdenum porphyry ore but needs additional study. Technical Background There have been substantial im¬provements in milling machinery and grinding operations, but rela¬tively few attempts have been made to develop alternatives to conventional impact milling. Sev¬eral methods, however, have been investigated that relate to this study. In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in a size re¬duction method known as the Snyder Process (Cavanaugh, 1972). It involved charging coarse ore into a pressure chamber, pressur¬izing with a gas, and activating a quick-opening (15 msec ) dis¬charge valve that connected the chamber to a discharge duct. This allowed solids to fluidize and ac¬celerate, subjecting the material to a variety of impulse phenomena that caused the desired size reduction. Other nonimpact means of achieving breakage and selective size reduction have been de¬scribed in technical and patent literature. Kanellopoulos and Ball (1975) considered using heat to induce thermal stress in quartz¬ite. This would cause cracking and, thus, increase grinding efficiency. Selective-flocculation process development generally involves single-mineral flocculation tests to identify the appropriate polymer experimental conditions for achieving the desired selectivity. Invariably the selectivity predicted on the basis of such tests is not realized when mixed-mineral tests are conducted. A systematic experimental investigation revealed that adsorption of the polymer on various substrates is critical to selecting the suitable flocculant. Simultaneously, a mathematical model was developed to predict the overall process of efficiency with a given polymer. In this paper, the results of these efforts to scientifically design a suitable selective flocculation process are presented.

The new Niagara Falls Intake Tunnel, mined in the highly fractured Lockport Dolomite, encountered prolific inflows of water contained in rock seams directly linked to the Niagara River. These inflows were pressurized and, more significantly, contained high concentrations of dissolved H2S gas. The contractors attempts to control the water/gas inflows included cement and chemical grouting from inside the tunnel. Ultimately, improving the rate of air exchange in the tunnel by increasing the fan capacity, in conjunction with a pattern down-hole pre-grouting program along the tunnel alignment allowed the contractor to control the concentration of H2S gas and complete the tunnel.

The dewatering of flocculated clay suspensions by compression in a centrifugal field was investigated. The results were analyzed with respect to the direct applicability of centrifugal dewatering (as in solid-bowl centrifuges) and indirect applications to gravity sedimentation systems. An important objective of the study was to evaluate the self-weight effect using centrifugal forces to simulate consolidation of deep sediments. Experiments were conducted in which the sediment mass and initial structure were maintained constant while the effective sediment weight was varied by centrifuging at different speeds. The relationship between the limiting sediment density and the applied consolidation stress was found to be the same for both gravity and centrifugal consolidation, indicating that small-scale laboratory tests can be used to predict consolidation in deep beds. The effects of the initial structure were also studied using controlled variations in flocculation conditions. The results imply that, for the flocculated suspensions studied, the longterm consolidation behavior is relatively insensitive to the actual extent of flocculation.

Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (Gh) Ltd., the leading gold mining operation in Ghana is embarking on a major rehabilitation and expansion programme to increase gold production. A new southern ventilation district was targeted for this programme, and the ventilation system was to be reviewed in order to cope with increased production. The southern ventilation district was previously ventilated by booster fans. This arrangement was however, inadequate to solve the problem of the need to reduce smoke clearance time of the production areas, and to generally improve the underground ventilation conditions. Fan maintenance costs increased with the number of fans installed in the booster fan arrangement, and the fact that the fans were installed underground made maintenance difficult and took longer time. It became necessary to consider the installation of a new main fan on the surface. This paper gives an overview of the ventilation systems of the southern ventilation district of the mine before and after the new main fan was installed. The field tests carried out on the fan to ensure that it complied with supplier's specifications are described, and the new system analysed to see it's effectiveness.

Discussion by Erich U. Petersen Harbuck et al. (1990) present results of research on sulfuric acid leaching of a germanium-gallium ore and shed considerable insight on possible extraction methods for gallium and germanium. However, the presentation does not give sufficient details to evaluate the research, so some of the conclusions may not be as applicable as stated. The objective of this communication is to indicate that relevant and easily obtainable geological and technical information was omitted. Consequently, on this basis, alternative explanations for some of the data are possible. Discussed below are the omission of: • pertinent geological, mineralogical and geochemical literature; • details regarding the determination of germanium concentration in quartz by electron microprobe; and • details on the calculation of the amount of germanium locked in quartz. "These topics are important since the determination of the amount and locus of "unrecoverable, locked germanium" may have an important impact on the economics and methods of germanium extraction and the directions of future research. Harbuck et al. state that "A key to increasing germanium extraction is understanding the mineralogy of the ore." However, only two studies are cited that in some manner describe the mineralogy of the ores. In addition, both of these studies were very preliminary, of limited scope and examined very few

In considering the use of underground space for civil works functions, there are several criteria that must be met if transfer of any of them is to occur. It is important to recognize that these criteria involve social and political as well as conventional engineering and economic considerations. It is the purpose of this report to identify certain of these criteria and develop a set of measures that will permit the evaluation of the potential benefit of transferring civil works functions underground. The work reported here was completed for the ASCE and is contained in the report, Undergound Space, 1973. If one examines the total direct and indirect economic return from the location of civil works in subsurface rather than surface space, sizeable benefits accrue. This occurs largely because design, construction, operating and maintenance costs of these systems are highly dependent upon the forces exerted on these systems by the surface enviroment itself. Transferring of these facilities to underground space would eliminate a large segment of those costs. It is equally true that civil works functions compete with other uses for surface space and generate significant conflicts with these competing uses. Highway construction takes land from other productive uses. Electrical transmission lines conflict in terms of safety and aesthetics with adjacent social activities. Assuming that construction costs can be made equivalent, the analyses in the previous report indicate that the locating of all civil works functions underground would yield an annual net savings to the society of the order of 60 billion dollars. The Bailey mining complex is located in Greene County, PA in the valley of Talley Run, a small stream tributary to the Enlow Fork of Wheeling Creek as shown on the location map insert found on Figure 1. The Bailey complex includes two Pittsburgh No. 8 Seam deep mines (Bailey and Bailey #2), a coal preparation plant, and two refuse areas (for disposal of coarse and fine processing waste). Clean coal is shipped from the complex via a 24.15 km (15 mile) rail spur, which connects to the Monongahela Railroad in Waynesburg, PA. In early 1981, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) began a permitting effort aimed at beginning construction of Bailey, the largest underground coal mining complex to be built to date in the United States. Construction of the Bailey Mine began in December, 1981, less than six (6) months following the first application submittal. Clean coal was produced by the Bailey Preparation Plant in September, 1984. Effective project planning, including early formulation of a project planning team, identification of "red flag" issues, innovative responses to environmental questions and development of environmentally sound project designs, all contributed to the relatively quick permitting at Bailey.

Introduction A new mining agenda is before us. Born of government policies and world economies, the years ahead will show reduced growth. Metals, mining, and most other natural resource industries are inflation dependant and capital intensive. For these, a long period of contraction of outmoded and costly capacity will evolve. In some cases, this will be supplanted by new, lower cost capacity. But this will occur only if the cost of production - including cash operating and debt service costs - comes in at or below current market conditions. The industrial outlook for metals mining can be characterized as bearish. A US bank economist said mining companies planning their five-year forecasts should take current market conditions and straight-line them to the end of the decade. With low growth and low inflation, the real price of metals will remain flat or decline slightly. As a result, capital funding will be problematic. The low-cost producer will succeed. That means only the producer with low cash costs and low principal and interest costs per unit of production, will succeed. Gaining a perspective One must look back 30 years to see the evolution of the capital markets, for metal mine financing. This period can be divided into two economic periods. The 1950s were a time of stable economics. Mining companies earned and reported good profits. They had good corporate creditworthiness. In essence, mining companies of the 1950s were highly self-reliant. When equity infusions were needed, they were easily obtained. Financial management kept long-term debt low. Fixed rate, long-term financing was readily available in the long-term bond markets. The commercial banks of the 1950s were rarely used by the mining industry. When necessary, mining companies went to the banks for short-term financing - the kind that was needed for working capital requirements. Changing rhythms In the old rhythm there was an orderly market. Even into the mid-1960s, 75% of world annual copper production was controlled by eight companies: two in the UK, one in Belgium, and five in the US. During times of poor market demand, these producers would control supplies to the market. They took their losses out of retained earnings. Capital was easily restored during the ensuing good times. The new rhythm called for copper to be an economic means to a political end. Third World copper producers brushed aside the market fundamentals of commodity economics. Yet, the political solutions of these countries - their lack of response to the market - have seldom achieved their original objectives. Each commodity has its own old and new rhythm. Aluminum may have a similar rhythm, coming 10 to 20 years later than copper. By the late 1960s, changes were occurring. Inflation was on the rise. Ore reserve quality was falling. As a result, capital expenditures were necessary to maintain existing output. These costs created an increase in corporate leverage, thus adding to inflation and rising interest rates. Indicators A comparison of the gross national product (GNP) deflator index, consumer price index, and the metal mining deflator index is instructive. (Fig. 1 and Table 1). With 1972 equal to 1, note that the metal mining deflator reached its lowest point in 1967. From that point, the metal mining deflator has accelerated severely for 16 years. Only two minor downturns occurred during the business recessions of the mid-1970s and the early 1980s. In essence, Fig. 1 shows that while GNP has grown modestly, a miner's dollar in 1972 would require $3.48 in 1980. This is an almost 17% compounded growth rate over that eight-year period. Beginning in the late 1960s, for the first time in mine financing, the risk of success shifted from the corporate balance sheet to third parties. Limited-resource financings were taken up by banking syndicates that accepted certain of these risks. The lender needed to be well acquainted with the types of risks to be evaluated. These include resource quality and quantity, construction and completion, capital and operations costs, market risks, force majeure, and political and exchange rate risks. Project financings became the basis whereby mining companies were able to maintain their borrowing capacities. In essence, the lender was willing to share some of the project risk while only receiving lenders' returns on these investments. Truck/shovel systems are a major form of materials handling in open-pit mines in spite of the high associated capital and operating costs. Mine management is usually faced with a decision to purchase new equipment in order to support the steadily increasing on production. These decisions involve a high degree of uncertainty with respect to future demands and technical developments. This paper describes a computer simulation model for evaluating the optimum equipment fleet in an open-pit mining operation. The system is based on a stochastic simulation program which accounts for the various mining and economic parameters. It calculates the type of equipment and the optimal number of trucks needed to meet the production targets. Two types of selection criteria: maximum rate of production or minimum cost can be applied.

Installation of equipment and structures at mines often requires mine planners to evaluate unique loading and operating conditions. Consideration of these unusual features is required throughout design and construction and into operation. Most planners understand the necessity of employing sound civil, structural and mechanical engineering techniques to design these structures and equipment. However, the influence of geotechnical factors on the overall progress of construction and operation is less appreciated. Mine operators routinely perform exploratory drilling to define ore deposits. These exploration activities can be extensive and often include provisions for assessment of subsurface conditions as they relate to the mining operation - requirements for ground support. All of these factors are important to the economics of the mine and are well justified. Surface facilities are provided to access and service the mine, and they play an important role in the successful development and operation of a project. Headframes, hoist foundations and shaft collars, in particular, are examples of unique installations encountered at underground mine sites. The design and above-surface behavior of these facilities can be analyzed with the usual fundamental engineering practices employed throughout the engineering professions. However, near surface exploration for the purposes of assessing soil and rock conditions for foundations is often given a reduced priority and less consideration. This article provides an outline of the benefits and importance of performing such exploration. References here relate particularly to shaft headframes, hoists and shaft collars. But the issues raised apply equally to other installations of a similar nature, including milling equipment.

INTRODUCTION Underground gold mining operations are found in South Africa, U.S.S.R., Canada, the United States, Zimbabwe, Ghana , Brazil. Australia, China and many other countries. The methods used for extraction differ from highly mechanized trackless mining in the developed countries to the labour intensive systems of the third world nations. The climatic conditions in which mines are situated vary from equatorial to arctic. The rock temperatures and the depth of workings also vary significantly from shallow to extreme depth. The Western Deep Levels mine in South Africa is the deepest and exceeds 4.000 metres in depth with strata temperatures above 55°C. These major differences between mining fields result in significantly different ventilation problems in underground gold mines. The ore types also vary and some deposits have high silica contents while other mines extract sulphide ores. Methane may also be encountered in underground gold mines and can have a large influence on the ventilation practice.
