This paper investigates variations of lignite quality attributes with geostatistical methods. The study focuses on lignite from the Southern Field in the Greek province of West Macedonia. The targeted quality variable is the ash water-free content (AWF). A geostatistical model is constructed based on data from 480 drillholes (approximate drill hole spacing of 250m). For each drillhole, the vertical average of the AWF is calculated. The coarse-grained AWF is then modeled as the superposition of a trend surface and fluctuations. The spatial dependence of the fluctuations is modeled by means of the experimental variogram. Kriging estimators are used to determine the AWF values on a rectangular grid, and the uncertainty of the estimates is calculated. Implications of the analysis for the variability of the produced lignite are discussed, and recommendations for additional drilling are proposed.

The art of wire rope inspection has advanced rapidly over the past decade. Present electromagnetic (EM) wire rope inspection instruments provide an important and often vital element of wire rope inspection. Some instruments are easy to operate and offer simple and clear data interpretation. Simultaneously, wire rope inspection and retirement standards are becoming simpler and more lucid. Future guidelines will he easy for inspectors to apply and for rope operators to fulfill. The thrust of evolving regulations is clearly toward periodic EM inspections supported by visual inspections. These development sallow even moderately skilled personnel to perform EM inspections of wire ropes. Therefore, it is now possible and cost effective for wire rope users to have EM and visual inspections performed by in-house personnel. In-house EM inspections have many advantages and offer an excellent return on the initial investment. Since EM inspections can detect rope deterioration in its beginning stage, wire rope users recognize that they are an effective preventive maintenance tool. For instance, the early detection of wear or corrosion allows immediate corrective action. This can easily double, or even triple or quadruple, the service life of a rope.

A variety of domestic bauxites have been beneficiated to meet refractory grade standards by use of high intensity, high gradient, wet magnetic separation. Besides reducing the iron content to less than 2%, the Ti02 content of the bauxite was also reduced. The beneficiation can be accomplished by means of a simplified wet process flow sheet with an estimated cost comparable to that of water washed, filler grade kaolin. The process has been carried out on a small pilot plant and then scaled to produce 25 tonnes of calcined refractory bauxite meeting National Stockpile Specifications.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. Built on a foundation of teams and teamwork, Gold Medal Performance (GMP) has had a significant and positive impact on the reduction of costs. At the same time, it has increased productivity, improved cash flow, and helped Newmont to further enhance health and safety programs. Currently, more than a hundred teams are working on improving line-balancing production and external communications at all levels of the corporation. The training and rigorous set of tools avail- able to and used by these teams were designed to help them improve communications, identify inefficiencies and their financial impact, develop and implement solutions, and finally, to measure the results of the process enhancement. The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older. Recent regulatory and policy initiatives under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), will have a significant effect in risk reduction requirements for the mining and minerals processing industry. For example, Congress is considering regulating 20 special wastes from the processing of ore and minerals through RCRA Subtitle D and TSCA. The performance of risk analyses and environmental planning at mining projects is often driven by Federal and state regulatory standards. Recent regulatory and policy initiatives by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), will have a significant effect on environmental planning and risk reduction programs for mining and minerals processing. Regulatory programs implemented under other Federal laws including the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act will also impact industry practices. This paper provides: 1) a brief overview of mining waste and mining waste management, and 2) a description of these regulatory initiatives and a discussion on the impacts of new requirements on environmental and risk reduction programs in the mining industry.

In Arctic surface mines, frozen ground adds to the complexity of slope stability analysis. The seasonal temperature change may thaw permafrost, and this thawed ground is often unstable. A computer program, GEODYNE, was used to simulate the movement of the thaw front in bare and insulated permafrost slopes. The simulation shows that the insulation can be used on mine slopes to prevent thawing.

Dynatec Mining Contractors (Dynatec) entered into a contract with Barrick Goldstrike Mines (Barrick) to develop the deep gold ore reserves at the Meikle Mine north of Carlin, Nevada. The Ventilation and Production Shafts were started in early 1994 and were completed in December, 1995. The mine development and mine construction programs were completed in November, 1996. This paper describes the Meikle Mine development program.

In mine haulage system, the surge bunker or stockpile installed between two facilities can raise the system production capacity. The arrangement of surge bunker has great relation with the capability development of the whole haulage system and the economic benifit. In the haulage system, surge bunker plays a role of surge capacity, accident capacity and technology capacity. In this paper, the variation of the material in surge bunker is analysed while the mine haulage system is working, the calculation method of the whole output is raised. With the goal of the maximum system output, the method of deciding the rational size of surge bunker is put out. In case study, the system output in Huolinhe surface mine is calculated, thus the rational size of surge bunker in huaulage system is decided.

The current underground infrastructure of an old monumental salt mine along with using it as a tourist, museum, nature, resort, conference and cultural events place is presented in the paper. At present, mainly in the monumental part of mine, only a small part of the historical chambers, which together with galleries form a tourist route available to visitors. Moreover, the essential activities aimed to make the tourist route more attractive and to change the decor of the underground sites are discussed.

This paper describes the application of the Graphics Assisted Under Ground Engineering (GAUGE) software to a 2-layered room and pillar hard rock mine. The graphics- assisted mine modeling and mine planning capabilities of GAUGE are demonstrated. The system uses polygons to model the room and pillar mine design and displays the model in plan view on the graphics screen,. The planning engineer interactively specifies areas to be mined in the medium or long term. The system calculates and accumulates tonnages and grades for the user-specified areas based on the layer being mined and the particular unit operation (drifting, widening or benching).

A comparison of the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, based on pilot plant testing of waste pebble by Jacobs Engineering is presented. Estimated costs for constructing and operating a beneficiation plant utilizing dolomite flotation are given. Research to develop practical flotation processes for removing dolomite from low-grade phosphate rock has been a high priority for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The Institute funded the above pilot plant programs in 1998 and 2000. The Florida Phosphate industry currently deals with the increasing dolomite content of ore reserves by practicing selective mining. Heavy media separation plants installed at two mines to remove dolomite from pebble are not being operated. The flotation separation of dolomite from waste pebble requires that the flotation feed be ground. Grinding liberates the mineral species and produces particle sizes small enough to be floated. Only two dolomite flotation processes, the IMC Anionic Process and the CLDRI Process, have been successfully demonstrated on flotation feed that has not been deslimed after grinding. Deslimed flotation feed, relative to undeslimed feed, has improved flotation performance and reduced reagent consumption. However, for the above mention processes, undeslimed ground feed increases the yield of concentrate because the phosphate desliming losses are avoided.

Queenstake Resources Ltd. has been exploring and mining alluvial gold deposits in the Yukon Territory and British Columbia since 1980. The five mines in production produced, in 1987, a total of 13,222 ounces. This paper will briefly review Queenstake's exploration program, property descriptions and mining methods, environmental concerns and a comparison of costs. (Sueenstake has been successful in developing a cash flow base from these operations that provide the capital for the acquisition and exploration of new, and hopefully, larger scale gold producers. NOTE: The historic alluvial mining unit of ounces per cubic yard and English units of measurement have been used throughout this paper. Dollars are Canadian unless otherwise noted.

"INTRODUCTION Moisture can be a villain, so new technologies have been explored to make more viable the production of high moisture iron ores. The current work presents the attempt of the utilization of a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) to aid in the screening process and in the ore handling process, such as stockpiles reclaiming and vessels/trains discharge in sub-zero temperature conditions. The results have shown that the polymer can be used in certain cases to improve productivity and increase safety in the process of handling the material (by increasing the TML). However, for size separation no advantages were found upon the use of the polymers. WATER ADSORPTION MECHANISMS The use of water in mineral processing is constant as its utilization brings an increase in the efficiency of separation. Although we have better results in the processing with water, materials with a high content of “natural” moisture can be very difficult to be treated by the conventional methods of separation. Nowadays many studies have been conducted in order to understand the effect of adsorption of water in the particles of complex minerals. Those studies have being divided in many different lines of research such as contact angle of a drop of water and the surface of the mineral to determine hydrophobicity, the particle size distribution and the porosity of particles. Mainly two forms of adsorption of water by the particles are possible: one the water is retained inside porosity of the particles. Laboratory tests developed in China have showed that capillary adsorption is faster in coarser particles that achieve the saturation degree earlier than finer particles (Xuewei Lv et al., 2011). The so called non-porous model considers the effect of water in the bulk sample of iron ores, in a physical connection when all the water works as a binder between particles as shown in the figure 1.If we take into account the compressibility of the system and compaction due to the weight of the bed over the particles, the thickness of the water film between particles is the same but the volume inside different particle size systems is much higher than in a system with particles of same size."

INTRODUCTION Due to the current depressed state of the mining industry, many mining companies have been forced to operate at less than maximum capacity. This paper will describe how the AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill near Empire and Parshall, Colorado respectively have utilized operations scheduling and budgeting to achieve production targets at minimum operating costs The AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill have been operating most recently at approximately sixty percent of maximum capacity. OPERATIONS SCHEDULING Production Targets. The production targets are tons, operating days, tons per opera- ting day, head grade, recovery, and pounds of molybdenum. One specific objective of operations scheduling is to meet the production target for pounds of molybdenum. Present market conditions dictate that production be adjusted to match sales of molybdenum. Over-production and creation of molybdenum inventories is unacceptable. In summary, the product ion target for pounds of molybdenum must be met, but not exceeded. Capacity. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage open crushing circuit capacity is 48,000 dry short tons per day. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage semi-autogenous primary grinding mill circuit capacity is 38,000 dry short tons per day. All other AMAX Henderson Mi 11 circuits such as rougher flotation, regrind, cleaner flotation, lead leach, filtering, drying and concentrate handling are sized to accommodate the 38,000 dry short tons per day and pro- ducts from same. The tailing delivery system is designed to accommodate tailing from a 38,000 dry short tons per day operation. Constraints. One mill production scheduling constraint is that the mill operating schedule must be the same as mine production, ore haulage and crushing. There is a total crushed ore stockpi1e storage capacity of 240,000 dry short tons. This breaks down to 60,000 dry short tons of crushed ore over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. However, there is only approximately 10,000 dry short tons of live crushed ore available over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. The cornerstones of these efficient operations have been formed using pneumatic backfill, creative shotcreting, specialized equipment, and highly motivated people. The manipulators possibly used in underground mining must deal with unpredictable obstacle while keeping certain positions and orientations of end effector, and in some cases, are required to possess redundant joints in order to be more flexible. This kind of manipulators might be fitted with jumbo drill or platform as auxiliary to potentially deal with some utility works in versatile way, such as installing rock bolts, guniting, blasting, charging, surveys and measuring work, etc.. This paper describes numerical procedures of performing inverse kinematic problems for redundant manipulators .The procedures, based on the generalized pseudoinverse of Jacobian matrix, are developed to lead to kinematic solution at both singularity and ill conditioning, and to guarantee continuous sequence of positions of the end effect or. Furthermore, the solution to optimization and obstacle avoidance is investigated. A numerical example is shown to illustrate the approach.
