This paper presents case histories of the construction of four large diameter circular shafts using reinforced concrete ring beams as the primary internal support system. The case histories pertain to concrete ring beam systems which have been successfully used in shafts up to 130 feet in diameter and 75 feet deep. Soldier pile and lagging, and driven steel piling earth retaining systems using ring beams, are discussed together with the cost savings associated with using concrete ring beams. Soil conditions encountered at the case history sites are discussed together with the development of design criteria for each shaft. Instrumentation data obtained at one site are also presented.

Introduction Geologic ore deposit models are key to any exploration program. In the search for ore deposits, the geologist first tries to understand the genesis of known ore bodies. During reconnaissance and evaluation of a prospect, a valid exploration model of a known ore body can help the explorationist focus on critical geologic attributes of the target area. Exploration models can conserve exploration funds that might otherwise be spent collecting data not critical to delineating an ore body. This article examines the benefits of using models, factors to be considered in developing models, and examples of the way recent models have evolved. New exploration concepts and techniques are developed in response to increased competition in the mining industry. New techniques can give an exploration group a slight edge that may translate into a discovery. Mine geology staffs may find previously unlooked for extensions to the ore body by applying new genetic concepts. When all appropriate techniques are applied to exploration and mining efforts, greater efficiency and increased profits may result. Before the 1950s, scientists speculated on the genesis of ore deposits and other natural phenomena. But they presented their results as if universal and final, even though they applied to only a few deposits. Because it did not provide sufficient criteria to distinguish the genetic processes, the classic conflict between hydrothermalists, epitomized by Lindgren, and nonhydrothermalists did not help the minerals explorationist much. Important information about individual ore deposits, such as age of the host rocks and mineralization, composition of the mineralizing fluids, and separation of mineralizing and nonmineralizing events in the paragenetic sequence, could not be gathered with past equipment and methods. But these early concepts of ore genesis contained excellent empirical observations, perhaps the most useful parts of these hypotheses. Through the years, prospectors have found most of the ore deposits in the world using direct observations and their collective empirical wisdom - an empirical model. The geologist's contribution becomes increasingly important after the more obvious surficial ore deposits have been discovered. In Europe and North America that time has arrived. With the introduction of sophisticated equipment and matching techniques in the 1950s in geochronology, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing, and computers, many previously equivocal genetic questions can be resolved. This proliferation of highly technical data has allowed the construction of many well-founded genetic models.

Because jackleg rock drills are a potential source of hand vibration exposure, they can effectively produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This will affect operator efficiency and mine productivity. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles using new materials to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. In previous work developed by the authors (1991), a detailed study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicated that, for an elastomer-based handle design, the overall acceleration level experienced by the hand can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It was also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz. This paper presents an investigation of the long-term effectiveness of an elastomer-cushioned handle under different conditions underground. In this study, sponsored by the Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada (MIROC), a number of cushioned handles were quantitatively and qualitatively tested in five operating mines. The vibration testing program has indicated that the cushioned handle can reduce overall vibration levels by as much as a factor of three. The qualitative assessment program of the cushioned handles by the drill operators has indicated some degree of preference for the cushioned handles over the steel handles, if certain design modifications are performed. This research program indicated that cushioned handles have the potential to become the dominant method with regard to vibration reduction and operator performance.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. A new fluid bed lime calcining plant is converting high quality limestone into quicklime at the Cape Lime facility in Vredendal, South Africa. The plant was supplied by Metso Minerals. Cape Lime, established in 1946, operates two limestone and dolomite mines in South Africa. The high quality Vredendal limestone deposits are suitable for the production of lime for water treatment and for manufacturing precipitated calcium carbonate.

Under drastically deteriorated situations, diesel equipment was introduced to some of local coal mines, aiming at higher productivity and better safety. To accommodate various diesel equipment in conventionally developed mines, mining system itself had to be modified; much larger trackless haulage ways were excavated. Possible health hazards of diesel not taken into account at the beginning become a serious concern and effective control measures are being searched for. The purpose of this paper is to study the diffusion characteristics of diesel exhaust in local coal mines. One of the parameters affecting dispersion of diesel contaminants is the coefficient of turbulent diffusion. Since CO2 is known to be closely correlated with other contaminants such as CO, NO, NQ, SO2 and RCD, it was chosen as a tracer gas in a series of dispersion experiments. A large diesel passage as well as a conventional track haulage way were the sites for the experiments. Rectangular dispersion pulses were generated for 30 ~60 seconds and CO2 concentrations were recorded at several locations 50~190 m downwind. The diffusion coefficients calculated graphically vary between 0.10~0.48 m2/s at both haulage ways. The results are analyzed to find any correlation with the air velocity and the distance from the disperser. The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is one of the underground mines operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). DMLZ is located approximately 1,500 m below ground level, where dominant rock types are skarn and diorite. The DMLZ mine and layout was designed based on the previous mine located above ground, the Deep Ore Zone (DOZ). The DOZ mine, located approximately 1,000 m below ground level, was a proven success, with a maximum capacity of 80K tonnes per day. During the production ramp up, which started in 2015, the DMLZ experienced several seismic events. The most significant event occurred in January 2018 with a recorded magnitude of more than 2.0 Mw, which resulted in a 14-month delay of the undercutting until March 2019. The significant event in January 2018 required the DMLZ to apply several adjustments related to the mining plan to help ensure it could continue development and achieve production target safely. This paper will describe the changes in the DMLZ mine plan as a response to the seismic activity at the mine, the reason behind the decisions being made to change the mine plan and strategy, as well as strengths and weaknesses between the previous plan compared with the new plan.

INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. Overburden excavation is an integral component of the surface mine production chain. The walking dragline is the most economic production equipment for overburden excavation in strip mining. Draglines are capital intensive, and thus, investments in multiple units severely impact the economic viability of projects. The use of few dragline units results in highly concentrated production focus, which must be efficiently managed to derive the potential economic benefits. Efficient use of draglines requires a thorough knowledge of the powered functions, the 3D rotational and translational motions and machine-formation interactions within the operating environment. Dragline kinematics and dynamics are required to understand and characterize machine performance and efficiency. In order to sustain the high productivity in difficult operating conditions, the dynamics of the dragline must be modeled and analyzed based on comprehensive kinematics. This paper investigates the planar kinematics of the front-end assembly and its interactions with the formation during excavation using the “Vector Loop Analysis” formulation with comprehensive simulation modeling in MATLAB Simulink. The kinematic models are used to examine the translational, rotational and angular displacement, velocity and acceleration components of the dragline front-end assembly along defined bucket trajectories during excavation. The results are the precursors for comprehensive modeling to examine the load deformation, torque requirements and dragline stress loading profiles for improving machine health and longevity.

The Florida Peninsula has existed as a part of a much broader plateau, since at least the Early Cretaceous. This plateau, the Floridan Plateau, now consists of the present peninsula and a broad submerged shelf of equivalent size extending the length of the state and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Florida Peninsula was separated from the mainland United States by a negative area called the Suwannee Straits. To the south of this feature existed an environment similar to today?s Bahamo Banks where very pure calcium and magnesium carbonates with associated evaporites were deposited. Thus the Eocene and Oligocene contain little or no quartz sand or clay minerals except in the Panhandle west of the Suwannee Straits where some clastics were contributed by rivers from the north.

A massive roof fall occurred in a small room-and-pillar coal mine. The roof falls occurred under a barrier pillar in a closed coal mine located a short distance above the active mine. The extensive fractures connected the active mine with the old mine, turning them into a “combined mine.” Since completely sealing off the roof fall area is prohibitively expensive for the mine, ventilating the connected old mine became the only option. A comprehensive investigation was conducted to understand the atmospheric condition in the old mine and to find an efficient way to ventilate the “combined mine.” A set of studies involving geology, gas content, pillar stability and mine subsidence were performed to explore whether the closed mine is filled with an explosive air-methane mixture. The air quantity measurement data were used to determine the resistance of the air path formed through the fractured zone. Observations and measurements made from a tour to the underground and mine surface enabled the formulation of simple but effective ways to ventilate the old mine. The ventilation network analysis also suggested methods of control, so that sufficient ventilation air can be directed to the two parts of the old mine.

Many organizations are realizing that continual improvement in health and safety relies on addressing the potential for various forms of human error. Of these, violations are often the most frequent form associated with accidents. These occur when an individual, or individuals, deliberately contravenes established and known safety rules. They have been associated with up to 90% of accidents and incidents in some industries and yet rarely receive the systematic attention they deserve in the promotion of safety. This paper presents underlying motives which cause violations. These can vary significantly from mine to mine and from job to job. Managers need some measure of attitudes to determine the underlying motives behind violations if they are to determine effective strategies for promoting safe behaviour. Questionnaires form the starting point to address attitudes and the motives behind rule violations. The choice of the most suitable questionnaire, however, will vary from organization to organization. Guidelines on the choice of questionnaire are offered.

Historically, research organizations have made significant contributions to the development and commercialization of new chemical products for the mining industry and examples of commercial results are cited With the recent demise of research organizations within the mining industry and dynamic changes in the industry, the supporting role of R&D groups has become limited or non-existent. Cat- reduction requirements and new raw-material sources offer future opportunities for R&D organizations to continue their effective participation in the commerical development of new chemical products. Potential areas of interest for future process applications are reviewed.

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of topdown managerial practices: reductions in production volume, employee layoffs, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefits are often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost-cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization's various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

Falconbridge is a major basemetal producer in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, Canada. The company identified a need to find a safe and cost-effective replacement for the welded wire mesh used to support loose ground during underground nickel mining. Falconbridge took a methodical approach to the concept of a spray-on liner as a screen replacement, proving the strength characteristics of the liner as a safe, cost effective and suitable method of supporting ground Compact, hydraulic mixing and spraying equipment were developed and are now in use at the Fraser Mine. Tekflex has been approved as a wire mesh replacement and has been in use since November 1998.

Waste clay ponds are a necessary part of phosphate rock beneficiation. They are large, averaging 2.6 km2 (1 sq mile). They are unsightly in that they protrude 6 to 15 m (20 to 50 ft) above natural grade. Stabilization and reclamation is slow and they have had a history of catastrophic failure. Florida has never published a specific rule regarding the configuration or height of these ponds. But it has enforced several policies along these lines. The phosphate industry has been forced to make major monetary decisions that affect mine economics for decades. The Florida Bureau of Mine Reclamation believes that the direction of regulation has been solidified but changes are still anticipated. Phosphate rock has been mined in Florida since 1890 (Fig. 1). Three notable technological changes occurred in the industry that led to major shifts in mining technique and volume. By about 1915, hydraulic mining had been replaced by centralized washers. Hydraulic mines usually started at an outcrop in or adjacent to a stream of the pebble zone. Water was pumped out of the stream through high-pressure monitors and sand and clay were washed away from the pebble. Mobile grizzlies and screens were used in conjunction with animal and human labor to concentrate the pebble and haul it away. Populations were sparse and the clays washed into the stream were considered an acceptable price for the commerce. The clays were not voluminous because the pebble zone typically contained relatively small amounts of them. Machines largely replaced animals by 1910 and provided greater efficiency of production. Centralized washers replaced mobile trommels. They allowed greater ease of access to shipping routes by rail. Some clays were placed in mine cuts from 1915 to 1930. Some were dammed off to increase the capacity of a given site. Some of these also failed, leading to clay plumes that were visible all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. By concentrating the waste clays (slimes) in impoundments, the solids concentration had increased, making plumes persistent for long distances. There were complaints. But there was no litigation against the companies during that time. In 1930, flotation technology allowed the recovery of the phosphate from deeper zones. This was because the "concentrate" size phosphate rock was in the sand-size range and could not be screened out. Centralized beneficiation plants grew into a three-step process - washing and screening, feed preparation and flotation (Fig. 2). Reagent storage, safety and the flotation cell complex made the plants into large capital installations. Larger draglines were required to dig deeper into the matrix. These had dramatically larger production capacities, which were then figured into the overall material balance for a given plant. The number of operators shrank and the production per operator grew. Larger areas were being bermed off for waste clay storage. An economic incentive became apparent for storing as much waste clay as possible in each settling area. At the same time, the population was steadily growing and more eyes were watching the activities of the phosphate mines. The impact generated by old abandoned mines in Peru have produced mining environmental liabilities, which can generate an impact on the environment. In the search for long-term sustainable solutions, Phytoremediation is presented as an interesting alternative, since it allows the use of Peruvian native plant species for the accumulation of heavy metals. In this paper, we present the results of native high Andean species: Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida. The final metal concentration in the aerial parts and in the roots of each plant show that Stipa Ichu is more efficient to recover Fe, reaching almost 278 times its initial value. In the same way, this plant is efficient to remove Zn, Cu and Cd, reaching maximum values of 64, 39 and 12 times its initial concentration respectively. Cortaderia Nitida turned out to be more efficient to recover Fe, Zn, Cu and Cr, with highest recovery of 250, 117, 39 and 13 times its initial value respectively. Finally, based on translocation factor, Stipa Ichu has better capacities of hyperaccumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr. Cortaderia Nitida only shows hyperaccumulation of Cr.

Platinum group metals (PGM) are often found in close association with arsenide and sulfarsenide minerals in copper-nickel bearing gabbroic rocks. Major losses of platinum in flotation have been attributed to the susceptibilities of the arsenic minerals to oxidation and subsequent losses of their recoveries in cleaner flotation stages. The use of a nitrogen atmosphere in grinding and in flotation, the effectiveness of activation for improving their floatabilities, and the role that electrochemical interactions play not only between grinding media and minerals, but also among different minerals, are discussed.

Although the health effects of airborne dust in underground coal mines are well recognized, a lack of understanding remains about the fundamental mechanisms of dust generation, transportation, deposition and dust-lung reaction. This study was intended to contribute to the understanding of dust transportation and deposition mechanisms in underground mine airways. Data from in-mine experiments carried out under controlled conditions in a straight section of a longwall panel with three different airflow velocities and two different types of coal dust (bituminous and semi-anthracite) were used to determine the turbulent deposition rate of dust particles. Measurements of ambient dust concentrations and deposition along the mine airway were obtained and the total dust deposition velocity (rate) was calculated. The deposition velocity of turbulent diffusion was estimated based on the experimental data and theoretical equations. The effects of airflow velocity, particle size, particle density and distance from the dust source on gravitational, turbulent and total dust deposition are discussed along with related conclusions.
