This article deals with open pit mine planning and a computer technology known as Direct Block Scheduling, or “DBS”. This is an emerging technology for modeling mine exploitation strategies using mixed-integer linear programming. This technique has proved to yield stronger economic results compared to the Lerchs-Grossmann (“LG”) algorithm currently used at the beginning of the mine planning process. The article briefly describes the shortcomings of current practice; then, this delves into the superior results obtained by DBS technology compared to current practice. Finally, the article argues that results achieve so far by DBS could be enhanced even further. To do this, the framework to apply this emerging technology, which is also used in current practice, should be modified to better exploit the capabilities of DBS technology. To better understand this change, an illustrated case study is presented at the end of the article.

Fine coal flotation using gaseous carbon dioxide has demonstrated the potential for producing superclean coal. The success of this new flotation .procedure is attributed to the coal's high adsorption potential for CO2. To understand the nature of gas-phase CO2 adsorption at the coal surface, in-situ FTIR spectroscopy in a controlled-environment chamber with an ultravacuum sys-tem has been used and the results are discussed in view of other experimental results from differential scanning calorimetry. It has been found that specifically adsorbed CO2 molecules at the coal surface are polarized and have a characteristic doublet at 2336 and 2361 cm-1. Two adsorption states have been proposed to account for the doublet observed from in-situ FTIR spectroscopy measurements. It is believed that the band at 2336 cm-1 originates from the activated site adsorption of CO2 and that the band at 2361 cm-1 arises due to the molecular aggregation of CO2 within the coal pores.

Mechanical mining holds great promise for the mining industry. Realizing this promise depends on giving mine operators the capability to evaluate the higher production, the lower costs, and safety enhancement that comes with mechanical mining. The opportunities for low cost and high production must outset the high capital costs associated with mechanical excavation. Giving the mining industry the tools to effectively evaluate and successfully implement mechanical methods defines the challenges and directions of the mechanical mining industry.

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

Friction factors or coefficients of friction used to estimate the resistances of mine airways are, in the main, estimated from empirical measurements made in other airways considered to be of a similar geometry and type of lining. A somewhat more analytical approach, although still based on empiricism, is to estimate the ratio of the average height of the asperities to the hydraulic mean diameter of the airway (e/D ratio) and then to employ the Moody Chart or one of the equations that have long been established to represent the [coefficient of friction v Reynolds number curves] on that chart. Unfortunately, the Moody Chart and corresponding equations are based on pipes of uniformly distributed (sand grain) roughness whereas the asperities that exist on the surfaces of mine openings are frequently highly irregular both in their size and distribution. This is considered to be a major cause of discrepancies that have been found between coefficients of friction by the Moody Chart and those actually measured in mine airways. The work described in this paper examines an alternative method of estimating coefficients of friction for rough natural surfaces with uneven sizes and distribution of surface asperities. The technique utilizes the relatively recent developments in fractal analysis. A fractal dimension is determined from the topography of the surface. This has been correlated to coefficient of friction for a scale model of a mine airway. Further work is being carried out in actual mine airways. However, at this time, it appears promising that the fractal method may allow coefficient of friction to be predicted for given types of strata and method of roadway drivage.

Underground longwall coal mines depend on conveyor haulage to transport large volumes of coal from the longwall face conveyor to the mine portal. In the last few years, the need for longer and larger longwall panel conveyors has become very significant. In order to keep conveyor equipment to a minimum and still transport higher tonnages over longer lengths, intermediate drive technology has been developed. The use of DC motors and controls in conjunction with load sharing techniques have a1 so proven effective. A case study of a new longwall panel conveyor at Utah Fuel's Skyline Mine incorporating these design techniques will be presented.

Cessation of open pit mining in 1996 at the McLaughlin hot-spring type gold deposit has resulted in the development of two pit lakes that will be managed as permanent lakes with a total storage capacity of 10,000 acre-feet. The south pit lake developed from alkaline ground water infiltration and had an initial pH of 7.2. It contained high concentrations of boron and chloride, indicating that it consisted of a mix of meteoric and evolved connate waters. Numerous carbon dioxide gas vents were present initially in the shallow south pit lake, but as the pit lake increased in depth, gas venting ceased and carbon dioxide is retained in the lower layer of the chemically stratified lake. Continued increase of dissolved carbon dioxide in the lower layer increases the potential for a limnic eruption. A chemocliie occurs at a depth of 47 m. The upper layer of the lake has lower pH, temperature, and conductivity than the lower layer. Effluent from ore and waste rock piles directed into the south pit lake has contributed to high levels of antimony, arsenic, cobalt, copper, mercury, nickel, and zinc. Iron oxyhydroxide is abundant in mine effluent that enters the pit lake and adsorption onto this phase has lowered the arsenic and antimony concentrations. The north pit lake formed primarily from winter surface runoff. The acidic water, pH 4.56, initially had high concentrations of cobalt, mercury, and nickel derived from weathering products of pyritized serpentinite and shales. Buffering by wall rocks has established a slightly alkaline pH of 7.62. The concentrations of trace metals in the north pit lake have substantially decreased due to continued dilution of the lake by surface runoff and remediation of parts of the pit walls that have been covered by backfill.

INTRODUCTION The following papers describe the extraction of nickel in the form of ferronickel from the Dominican laterites. The Falconbridge process was developed initially in the Falconbridge Metallurgical Laboratories and subsequently in several successive stages of pilot plant operation in the Dominican Republic. In the course of this work we came to believe that there is advantage in piloting on site. Mining, metallurgical and geo-political considerations all have major impact and that belief has been borne out by commercial plant experience. Lateritic nickel ores differ substantially, even within the same orebody, in their amenability to extraction methods. The Falconbridge process takes account of the heterogeneous nature of the deposit. Three years of geological field exploration led to ten years of process development after it was realised that the then known metallurgical processes would not give economical extraction from the Dominican ores. In addition to establishing the viability of a novel pyrometallurgical approach, it was necessary to verify design parameters for a very considerable scale-up to prototype commercial operation. The plant was eventually constructed within the original estimates of time and cost. Unique features contributing to the technical and commercial success of the project are described. Additionally, some bold extrapolation based on pilot plant work, eventually proved to be quite conservative. The mine is not a conventional open pit operation, but is perhaps better characterised as an earth moving job. Novel application of mobile equipment led to great flexibility in the mine, where operation of several mining fronts is essential to maintaining uniformity of ore feed to the plant. Mining companies are increasingly approaching the social aspect of sustainable development within the rural communities that neighbour their projects and operations. Rural community engagement requires significant effort and resources, and it can be extremely challenging for mining companies to earn and sustain social capital. The focus on rural, proximal community engagement is not to be understated and has led to significant benefits in many communities. However, opposition to mining projects is often exhibited in urban environments, where there may be potential for mining companies to gain social capital with relative ease. Cities tend to have existing frameworks for community engagement and public activation, such as annual parades and festivals, that make it easy for a mining company to provide financial support or value-in-kind. Local organizations and community groups can achieve the same amount of engagement in an urban environment with significantly less effort required from the mining company. By applying simple marketing principles to community engagement strategies, corporations can increase awareness for their business and encourage city residents to think critically about the origin of resources. Unlike many corporations, mining companies are not marketing or selling products to individual consumers. From this arises the opportunity for a company to use marketing to promote other positive initiatives and, as such, connect their brand with positive messaging thus earning social capital. This may lead to a wide variety of secondary impacts including benefits to recruitment efforts, increased political support, and positive media coverage. This paper explores these matters with special reference to Vancouver, BC, Canada and the mining companies Teck and Goldcorp.

The rockburst monitoring system at the Sunshine Mine has recently been improved to increase the certainty of burst locations and to output location results in a manner amenable to easy interpretation. Three methods of location calculation were used: a computer code provided with the hardware in-place (the MP-2501, a code based on the least-squares method (Blake et a1, 19741, and a nonlinear iterative code written by the principal author. The more accurate locations are given by the latter two codes, but still are only correct to within about 100 ft. This error is due to uncertainties introduced by the geologic and mining variations versus the assumptions made in the location codes. Software was then written to make two-dimensional plots of burst location by level, so management could monitor problems easily.

The Bureau of Mines monitored the water quality in and near a copper/gold tailings impoundment. Samples were taken from the unsaturated %one. and dissolved concentrations of over ZO constituents were measured with respect to depth and moisture content, factors which influence oxygen content and sulfide oxidation. Samples from the unsaturated %one were drawn through a hypodermic needle sampler into individually evacuated vials fitted with septa, thus preventing oxygen contamination. Water quality was also monitored in the saturated tailings, underlying colluvial aquifer, and weathered andesite bedrock.

Introduction The Vernal Phosphate Operation is located in northeastern Utah, about 18 km (11 miles) north of Vernal, about 280 km (175 miles) east of Salt Lake City, UT. The plant began initial operations in 1961 under the name of the San Francisco Chemical Co. In 1981, Chevron purchased the operation from Stauffer Chemical Co. In 1982, plant capacity was doubled to about 72.6 kt/a (800,000 stpy) of phosphate concentrate. From 1984 to May 1986, another expansion increased the capacity to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy) of concentrate. It also incorporated a number of equipment and process changes designed to increase the overall plant phosphate recovery. A 150-km (94-mile) slurry pipeline, the world's longest phosphate pipeline, was also constructed from the Vernal plant to a new Chevron Chemical and Fertilizer plant near Rock Springs, WY. Over the past five years, plant expansions and the pipeline construction have been accomplished without missing a single concentrate shipment.

Ground water can pose major engineering and environmental problems to the new generation of large, deep gold mines currently being developed throughout the world. It is important that the potential magnitude of these problems be assessed early in the planning of such projects and that any necessary dewatering and environmental remediation programs be designed at least preliminarily in the feasibility stage. The assessment should begin with acquisition of hydrogeologic data during exploration drilling and be followed by carefully designed and analyzed aquifer tests. Once a sufficiently detailed conceptual hydrogeologic model has been defined, state-of-the-art numerical models should be used to estimate ground-water inflows to proposed pits and underground openings, to design and evaluate the potential effects of various dewatering schemes, to define specific environmental impacts, and to predict pore pressures in highwalls relative to slope stability. The modeling results will indicate which method(s) of dewatering will be most effective both technically and economically. If wells are used, it is imperative that they be as hydraulically efficient as possible. There are new methods of drilling and completing dewatering wells that can help assure maximum efficiency.

This project, which is intended to provide effective sewerage services to the Blue Mountains community, is located in the Blue Mountains National Park, about 60 km west of Sydney, Australia. The sewerage scheme consists of about 40 km of tunnels, out of which approximately 22 km have been completed. This paper describes the last major tunnelling operation on this project, the Hazelbrook to Katoomba tunnels. These tunnels, which mainly traverse the Hawkesbury Sandstone formation, are being excavated by a new 3.4 meter diameter Jarva Mk12C TBM. The mucking system consists of a continuous conveyor, which has allowed for some very impressive advance rates. The paper will consist of three main sections; the general geological conditions expected along the tunnel will be described in the first section. The second section will discuss the design and main features of the TBM, back-up system and continuous conveyor. The third section of the paper will describe the operational aspects and various performance data of the machine.

Under a contract awarded by the U.S. DOE-PETC, the Pennsylvania Electric Company and New York. State Electric and Gas Corporation are conducting a test program to evaluate and optimize the performance of a two-inch air-sparged. hydrocyclone (ASH) for cleaning fine coal. The test program is being conducted at the Homer City EPRI Coal Quality Development Center, utilizing Upper Freeport coal classified to minus 0.15 mm as the process feed material. A matrix of experiments has been conducted to establish the influence of significant design and operating variables (including overflow and underflow orifices, inlet slurry pressure, airflow rate, and reagent dosage) on the production of deep cleaned coal. Performance of the ASH is being compared to conventional froth flotation, utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. This paper focuses on work completed to-date to optimize the performance of the air-sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal. INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) have been evaluating advanced fine coal cleaning processes for the production of compliance grade coal (1.2 pounds S02/million Btu). Laboratory bench-scale froth flotation results were compared with results of advanced flotation processes as performed by various organizations, utilizing the same coal feed. Among the processes evaluated, the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) - developed by Dr. Jan Miller at the University of Utah - was considered to offer the best potential for retrofitting into an existing coal preparation facility because of the increased capacity per unit volume. The ASH has been shown to process over 100 times the throughput of conventional froth flotation cells. In May of 1988, Penelec/NYSEG was awarded a contract from the Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy and Technology Center (DOE-PETC) to optimize the performance of a five cm (two inch) ASH for producing compliance grade coal from raw classified minus 0.150 mm (1.00 mesh) Upper Freeport coal, and to compare its performance with conventional froth flotation utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. The test work is being conducted at EPRI's Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania, utilizing a circuit processing 0.10 to 0.25 tons of coal per hour. Other members of the Penelec/NYSEG contract team include the University of Utah, Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., Davy Dravo, Kaiser Engineers, Ebasco Services, and Management and Technical Systems. ASH DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The ASH-2 System is a five cm ID (actually 4.76 cm) air-sparged hydrocyclone manufactured by Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., under license from the University of Utah, for the purpose of research, evaluation and development. A schematic drawing of the air-sparged hydrocyclone is presented in Figure 1. Basically the air-sparged hydrocyclone consists of two concentric right-vertical tubes, a conventional cyclone header at the top, and a froth pedestal at the bottom. The inner tube is a porous tube through which air is sparged radially. The outer nonporous tube simply serves as an air jacket to provide for even distribution of air through the porous inner tube. The slurry is fed tangentially through the conventional cyclone header to develop a swirl flow in the radial direction. Air is sparged through the jacketed, inner porous tube wall and is sheared into small bubbles by the swirl flow. Hydrophobic particles in the slurry collide with these bubbles and, after attachment, are transported radially into a froth phase which forms on the cyclone axis. The froth phase is stabilized and constrained by the froth pedestal, thus moving towards the vortex finder of the cyclone header and discharged as an overflow product. Hydrophilic particles generally remain centrifuged in the slurry phase and are discharged as an underflow product through the annulus created by the froth pedestal.

Perlite is a naturally occurring siliceous rock, which can be expanded from four to twenty times its original volume when heated at a temperature close to its softening point. The expanded perlite is characterized by increased sound and thermal insulating properties. However, the conventionally expanded perlite products have high porosity and low mechanical properties that limit the range of their applications in the construction and chemical industry. The present work aims at the development of new closed porous microcellular material from perlite with enhanced mechanical and physical properties to be applied in new applications, like joint compounds, functional fillers for special paint types, special blasters and mortars, artificial marble. For the production of these new materials a vertical electrically heated furnace with six different heating zones and controlled gradient temperature profile was used. The effect of major process parameters, like temperature and air flow, on the quality of the produced materials was studied using Greek perlite from Milos Island. The quality of the new products was evaluated in terms of their bulk density, compression strength, water and oil absorption, surface area and pore volume. The experimental results show that the produced materials are characterised by improved mechanical and physical properties compared to the conventionally expanded perlite products.

Introduction Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering a seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson. 1989). Natural gamma coal-thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) in Pennsylvania and West Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988). This paper describes the installation of a natural gamma coal-thickness sensor on an operating continuous miner. Previous tests had shown that the NGB-1000 coal-thickness sensor manufactured by American Mining Electronics, Inc., of Huntsville. AL, is an accurate, mine-worthy instrument. This large gamma detector consists of a sensing head and a control panel. The sensing head contains thallium-doped, sodium iodide scintillating crystal, which is coupled to a photomultiplier tube. The control panel contains the electronic components required for calibration, count conversion and display to the operator. Methods Conditions at a Consol mine in northern West Virginia require that 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in.) of coal be left at the roof boundary of continuous miner development sections. This roof coal is required because the shale of the immediate roof is friable and unstable. In the past, operators have used a dirt band that is usually visible near the top of the seam as a guide in maintaining the proper cutting horizon. However, this is not always reliable. Earlier observation showed that the actual thickness of the coal left on the roof varied widely; further, it was noted that occasional, accidental excursions into the immediate roof required supplementary roof control measures, such as installation of planks or center bolts. Thus, it was concluded that operators needed a better source of guidance for control of the cutting horizon, and a roof-coal thickness sensor was scheduled for installation. The NGB-1000 sensor was installed on a Joy 12CM10 continuous miner in June 1988. The sensing head was mounted on the cutter boom of the miner, and the control panel was mounted in the operator's cab. Power for the sensor was initially derived from an intrinsically safe battery power supply. Initial measurements with the sensor showed that the calibration was the same as that used in earlier tests at two other mines, indicating the uniformity of the natural gamma background above the Pittsburgh seam. Operating personnel were initially skeptical of the instrument's accuracy, and were hesitant to use its readings as a guide in maintaining a proper cutting horizon. Because gamma attenuation, the instrument's operating principle, is somewhat abstract, attempts to demonstrate the instrument's accuracy by explaining that principle were generally ineffective. It was found, however, that an operator could usually be convinced of the usefulness of the instrument by placing a large piece of coal of fairly uniform thickness over the instrument's sensing head and allowing the operator to see that the instrument reading increased by an amount very near his estimate of the thickness of the piece. The mine was provided with seven battery power supplies and a charging station. The charging station was kept in the lampman's office, and the mechanic on each shift was instructed that he was responsible for two battery power supplies each day: a freshly charged one to be taken in at the beginning of his shift and a depleted one to be brought out at the end. This system worked well for a few weeks, but eventually some battery power supplies were left in use so long that their batteries were discharged too deeply to allow recharging. In addition, transport and recharging of the batteries represented an additional task for the mechanics, who were already very busy. Consequently, a request was filed with MSHA to allow the sensor to be powered through intrinsic safety barriers by an electronic power supply connected to machine power. The permit was granted, and the sensor was connected to machine power. After the sensor was connected to machine power, the only operating problem experienced was occasional failure of cables. A supply of the required cables was made and delivered to the mine so damaged cables could be quickly replaced. Much of the cable damage could be eliminated by slight modifications to the miner during a rebuild, so that cables could be installed in more protected locations. After the sensor had been in operation for about two months, a survey was made to determine its effect on continuous miner operations. In previous research, coal thickness measurements made in 88 locations by the natural gamma method were compared to measurements made in the same locations by observing drill cuttings and by inspections of drill holes with a borescope. That research showed that the gamma method is at least as accurate as the other two methods (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989) and is also much easier to use. The object of the survey described here was not to assess the accuracy of the natural gamma measurements. but rather to determine the effectiveness of the sensor output as a guide for the operator in maintaining control of the cutting horizon. The development of small precious metal mines in the western states has been directed at heap leach operations. Crushing plants are an essential adjunct to heap leach operations. They must meet environmental air quality regulations which generally follow a similar pattern from state to state. Prior to mine construction a permit must be obtained and an operating permit granted during or shortly after the start-up period. The typical construction permit application consists primarily of drawings, specifications and an explanation sufficient to indicate that the mass of particulate matter entering the atmosphere is below minimum standards. The operating permit may be granted following demonstrations that air emission control equipment or methods comply with information submitted in the construction permit application.

This paper presents an assessment of modeling techniques in predicting subsidence over longwall areas. Extensive instrumentation, both at the surface and subsurface of three longwall mines in northern West Virginia have been made. Ground movements were monitored during" a three year-period until subsidence ceased in these areas. A comparative analysis of empirical subsidence prediction techniques including, graphical {NCB}, profile function, influence functions (USBM, BAL'S, KNOTHE'S, and zone area) will be presented. A brief geologic and topographic description of each site along with the instrumentation and monitoring program will also be presented.

From 2015 to 2021, five massive pillar collapses occurred at four underground stone mines in the eastern United States. These events resulted in powerful airblasts that damaged mine infrastructure and mobile equipment, seriously injured miners, and disrupted underground travelways. Each of these pillar collapses propagated through the overlying strata, causing a subsidence basin on the surface. Pillar collapses are particularly hazardous for miners because they can occur with little warning and can affect miners that are far from the pillar collapse area. The following case studies show that certain factors may increase the likelihood of a pillar collapse. For instance, each of the five events involved the collapse of at least twelve benched pillars with width-to-height ratios (w/h) of 0.8 or less. This study elaborates on
