The analytical pillar design procedure employing the Wilson equation is based on the site-specific material strength of the floor, pillar, and roof rock. Stable pillars so designed will sometimes be larger than those designed using empirical methods thus providing more stability or at other times smaller than empirically designed pillars thus conserving natural resources. Presented here is a detailed procedure for the analytical design of soft rock pillars using the Wilson Equation. An example of this procedure is presented that uses data from a mine in the Owl Seam in Southern Appalachia. These Owl Seam pillars are now in use and are performing as expected. Also addressed is an assessment of the Dr. Scovazzo?s analytically designed pillars based on pillar performance data gathered by Dr. Mark in the Southern Appalachian Coal Field.

This paper evaluated using a water-filled abandoned mine (Orphan Boy) as a heat source for a 240- kW closed-loop heat pump with the goal of heating a 2,000-m2 building. The mine has a 245-m vertical shaft connected to a large stope by three horizontal cross-cut shafts. There is 1,250 x 106 L of water at a consistent temperature of 24-26° C that is available mostly in the stope. The only heat exchanger placement option is in the vertical shaft. Therefore, the focus was to model heat exchanger placement in the vertical shaft to determine the extent to which the systems will induce thermal currents between the stope and vertical shaft. Modeling of thermal currents, temperature profiles and heat contribution from the ground was done using finite difference and computational fluid dynamics. An optimal configuration was determined showing sufficient water movement and heat transfer will occur with a low water temperature in the shaft above 20° C. This project supports a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant that will implement the full-scale system.

Fire detection capability in conveyor belt entries of coal mines has advanced considerably since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. The advances in instrument technology and computer based monitoring have provided better fire detection than ever introduced in the industry. This paper discusses recent belt conveyor fires and detections in mines utilizing CO Monitoring Systems. Data from investigative reports is presented on belt entry fires from 1991 to the present.

The coal mining industry is divided into two distinct economic segments based on Coal Supply Agreements. Coal supply agreements generally fall into two categories, spot or long-term, with the selected contract term being driven by the buyer's market expectations, security of supply considerations, fuel tonnage and quality requirements, and economics. Short-term or spot coal purchases are generally market driven and are highly competitive in today's marketplace. Long-term contracts, particularly those involving captive mines and mine-mouth power plants, are commonly driven by considerations other than economics. These other considerations, such as Reserve Conservation and Resource Recovery, Security of Supply, and Maintenance of Levelized Costs may increase the cost of coal, often needlessly and without benefit to the buyer or seller. The basic economic principles which guide the market driven metals industry and generally guide the spot coal sector of the coal industry should apply equally well to the long-term coal supply contract. The artificial constraints imposed as a result of regulated rates of return should be re-examined and in most cases, abandoned. There are many methods of surface and underground coal mining being used today such as, open-pit, contour, mountaintop, and area mining for surface mineable reserves; conventional, standard continuous and super-section continuous miners, and longwalls for deep reserves; and highwall miners, thin seam miners and augers in between. This discussion is primarily directed to surface mining, however the same principles of least cost mining on a Net Present Value basis must be considered in all cases.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) within the mining industry are becoming frequent events. Large companies and small companies alike are jumping on the bandwagon of merger mania. The results of these mergers have significant impacts on the employees of the involved companies. Comments, observations, and specific examples of the 'peop1e"aspect of mergers are presented in an attempt to answer the question "will it be business as usual?" My answer is a simple NO. This paper attempts to provide support for my conclusion. The reader should recognize that the comments, observations, and specific examples mentioned in this paper are subjective and reflect the experience and prejudice of the author.

Productivity improvements reduced the number of continuous miner sections from seven to three while maintaining full productive capacity. So a decision was made to test an advancing tailgate ventilation system on the shortwall mining section. Having the shortwall mine its own return air system has freed the third mining section for more productive, less costly mining. The advancing tailgate has provided effective ventilation across the face and gob with acceptable pressure losses. The low-productivity, tailgate-development, continuous-miner section has been transformed into to a high-productivity, development-retreat section that is also available for long-term mine development duties, increasing mine planning flexibility.

INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. The role of pre-conditioning in a caving operation has multiple benefits, ranging from assisting with improved caveability, normalising fragmentation and improving draw point hang-up frequency. At Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Operations, both the Ridgeway Deeps block cave the Cadia East Panel Cave have utilised pre-conditioning using hydraulic fracturing. Seismic response data inside and outside the pre-conditioned volume show the benefit of treating the full caving block. Cadia East has further developed pre-conditioning to mitigate developing seismic hazards associated with major structures (fault-slip events) and managing mine-wide seismic hazards in new caving operations where the potential for large damaging seismic events exists due to high stresses and hard competent rockmasses. A case study reviewing the impact of pre-conditioning to mitigate seismic hazard associated with fault slip is presented. Cadia East operation undertook a targeted hydraulic fracturing program and reduced the overall number of large events as an example of the benefits of pre-conditioning. This paper will review the application of Hydraulic Fracturing at Cadia and discuss the geotechnical and seismological parameters of seismic events that occur within and outside of pre-conditioned rockmass volumes to demonstrate the benefits that Hydraulic Fracturing bring to future caving operations.

On July 1, 1999, most domestic metal mines will have to report releases of toxic chemicals into the environment for the first time as required by SARA Title 313. Some of these reportable releases will appear huge in relation to reports by other industries. The reasons for the potentially large reportable releases, special considerations for mining operations, and strategies for dealing with the reports are described. Data composited from experience with several mining companies is presented in the context of a typical gold mine.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the response characteristics of commercially available gas, smoke and flame sensors to fires of common combustible mine materials. The experiments were conducted in the large-scale fire gallery located at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory in Fairchance, PA, using ponderosa pine, red oak, Douglas fir, high and low volatile coals, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) conveyor belts, No. 2 diesel fuel and diesel exhaust. All the experiments (except those using No. 2 diesel fuel and the diesel exhaust tests) were conducted in a similar manner, with combustible materials heated rapidly by electrical strip heaters, producing smoldering fires that quickly transitioned into flaming fires. The sensors included a diffusion-type carbon monoxide (CO) sensor, photoelectric- and ionization-type smoke sensors, a video smoke/flame detector and an optical flame detector. Simultaneous measurements were obtained for average gas concentrations, smoke mass concentrations and smoke optical densities in order to quantify the levels of combustion products at the alert and alarm times of the sensors. Because the required sensor alarm levels are 10 ppm and 0.044 m-1 optical density for CO and smoke sensors, respectively, the different sensor alarms are compared to the time at which the CO and smoke reached these alarm levels (Litton et al., 1991). In addition, the potential impact of using smoke sensors that have met the performance standards from accredited testing laboratories is also evaluated using the response of an Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL)-approved combination photoelectric/ionization smoke detector. The results are discussed relative to fire sensor needs that can have a positive impact on mine fire safety.

Many investigators conducted surface force measurements between hydrophobic surfaces in water, and observed attractive force that was substantially stronger than the van der Waals attractive force. The excess force was appropriately referred to as “hydrophobic force”, for which many different theories have been put forth by numerous investigators. In an earlier publication (Yoon and Ravishankar, 1996), it was suggested that the hydrophobic force maybe due to the interaction between the large dipoles created by the surfactants adsorbing on solid surfaces in patches (or domains). In the present work, a mathematical model has been developed to further elaborate the theory.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modi tying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identity and quantity operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

In an effort to reverse the trend of declining enrollments to mining engineering programs that began in 2015, the University of Arizona has implemented a number of interventions over the past five years, including ramping up its pre-college mining education and outreach, and undertaking several enrollment research projects. This paper describes the use of rock index property testing to obtain rock properties that a.re useful in the design and construction planning of an underground development for civil engineering or mining projects. The index properties discussed include (1) point load; (2) Schmidt hammer hardness; (3) abrasion hardness; and (4) total hardness. The first two index properties correlate to uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. Discussions are given on the relationship to rock mass properties and the integrated use with semi-empirical, geotechnical design methods. The latter two properties correlate to construction performance parameters and some experience is cited. Examples of data are presented from an index testing program carried out on siltstone, sandstone and limestone rock core samples from a deep borehole drilled in the Paradox Basin of Utah for a nuclear waste repository site investigation.

A detailed experimental study of the variations in grinding rate with particle size, particle load, ball diameter, ball load, mill diameter, and mill speed was carried out for a soft cement clinker and a hard cement clinker. The effects of the ball diameter, ball load, and particle load were observed to be material (hardness) independent, and those of the particle size, mill diameter, and mill speed to be material dependent. A sharp change in grinding behavior was observed for both the clinkers at about 150 µm size. Below this critical size: (1) the hardness difference between the two clinkers became insignificant, (2) variation in the grinding rate with particle size became markedly more pronounced, and (3) mill speed had little or no effect on grinding rate. The importance of these results in the context of process optimization and control is discussed.

"Past heap leach design has evaluated hydrodynamic parameters based on a uniform particle size of heap material, but has ignored the equal importance of the instability of fine migration within heap stack in the beginning stages of the irrigation process. The proposed probabilistic model evaluates internal fine erosion and segregation potential of well-graded crushed ores by considering the entire particle size distribution shape and site compaction degree. Using this model, unsaturated flow model parameters were successfully evaluated based on synthesized soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). Additionally, one-dimensional unsaturated transient flow modeling with Hydrus 1D® showed that the different recovery efficiencies of heap material under unsaturated flow patterns depending on the particle size distribution and compaction degree of heap material. Agglomeration preprocess employed by most heap leach sites can reduce the potential of fine erosion within heap material significantly, but internal stability of crushed ores and hydrodynamic-based analysis of heap material’s pore structure is equally important in the prescreening stage in order to improve efficiency of the heap leach and avoid a costly agglomeration process. INTRODUCTION Accurate estimation of heap leach recovery is a difficult task due to the variety of design parameters that need to be considered - such as geochemistry, hydro-dynamics, and geotechnical design aspects, most notably particle size distribution through the process of agglomeration. After agglomeration techniques were introduced to heap leach design, the influence of particle size distribution and compaction degree in enhanced heap leach recovery has been neglected. The main purpose of agglomeration is to prevent fine segregation and internal erosion during and after heap stacking for well graded crushed ores, which will eventually diminish heap reach recovery. Recent studies show that agglomerated heap materials that had been consolidated at 10 meters below heap surface can release the fines after contact time with lixiviant to the compacted heap material and produce poor drainage performance (Milczarek et al, 2013). It must be noted that engineers and practitioners should investigate feasibility of agglomeration benefit prior to heap leach design because the agglomeration process can incur up to 20 or 30% of project costs. Internal stability of stacked heap material is mainly governed by the particle size distribution of crushed ores. Depending on this stability, segregation and internal erosion of fines can be mitigated by the application of moderate compaction effort during heap construction. Investigation of segregation and internal erosion potential therefore takes precedence for well graded crushed ore since reaction time and contact area with lixivant are greater in finer ores."

"This study aimed to determine the optimum operating parameters of a continuous bioleaching system to leach arsenic (As) from mine tailings using a mixed mesophilic bacterial culture. The microbial consortium, previously adapted for effective growth at high pulp density and metal concentrations, was mainly composed of Leptospirillum ferriphilum, and Acidithiobacillus caldus. The mine tailings, collected from the Janggun mine (South Korea) contained 11% (w/w) of As. The tests were performed in a laboratory-scale unit composed of three reactors connected in series following a cascade configuration. Agitation speed, air supply, solid concentration, residence time and temperature were systematically optimized by assessing the leaching activity. Several parameters were monitored on a daily basis, including the As released into solution, iron oxidation rates, pH, cell concentration, dissolved oxygen and redox potential. Overall, improvement of oxygen transfer, by optimizing the agitation speed and air supply, presented the most tangible impact on the leaching performance. The highest As leaching efficiency observed in this study was 82%, which supports the feasibility of the process. INTRODUCTION Worldwide, around of 65 billion tons of mine tailings are produced every year (Jones & Boger, 2012). These materials comprise the waste minerals produced after ore beneficiation. Mine tailings usually contain heavy metals (e.g., Cobalt (Co), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn) and Arsenic (As) (Falagán, Grail, & Johnson, 2016; Nguyen, Lee, Park, & Lee, 2014). The exposure of these materials to the environment can produce serious health damage and environmental degradation (Martin, Dowling, Pearce, Sillitoe, & Florentine, 2014). Mine tailings management represents a major issue in South Korea. There are more than 1,000 abandoned mines containing stockpiled mine tailings within the territory (Choi, Park, Hong, Park, & Kim, 2013; Kim, Kim, Ahn, Ko, & Lee, 2005; Lee, Lee, & Kim, 1998). These tailings comprise high concentration of arsenic. Therefore, the Korean Government has directed its efforts to developing eco-friendly technologies, for the arsenic detoxification of mine tailings Continuous bioleaching is explored as a remediation technology (Borja et al., 2016). The present study aimed to develop a mixed mesophilic bacterial culture for optimal growth at high metal and solid concentration; and optimize the operating conditions of a continuous bioleaching unit. This investigation forms part of a larger study aimed to develop a bioleaching technique to treat Janggun mine tailings (Borja et al., 2017; Ngoma et al., 2017)."

Blast engineers have been taking advantage of image-based rock fragmentation analysis methods for the past 3 decades to estimate rock size distributions. These methods utilize a wide range of image segmentation techniques, from manual to fully-automated, to delineate the edges of rocks in images. Rock delineation results are then converted to physical rock sizes (and percentage passing curves) by scaling the image pixels to correspond to physical measurements. The size scaling process is critical for acquiring physical measurements, but specific to the limitations of different applications. This article starts by presenting a shovel bucket-based fragmentation analysis system, where scaling is done using the known width of the shovel bucket within the image. Next, it describes methods that use pictures captured by digital cameras with scaling reference objects in the view. Finally, the article presents a method that uses three-dimensional imaging to capture images without the need for scaling reference objects. A portable device which utilizes a three-dimensional imaging method is proposed, and compared with the other methods. The proposed solution combines the generated three-dimensional points with the delineated rock boundaries in the image to reconstruct the surface, and generate accurate rock size estimates and percentage passing rock size distributions. System operation is described and its accuracy and performance are discussed for various scenarios. It is shown that since the device does not require a physical object for scaling reference, it is free from the limitations of other methods, and can be applied for automatic rock size measurement from various sources such as mining shovels, loaders, crushers, stockpiles, haul truck beds, and conveyor belts.

Many coal mining companies have potential surface mine reserves that either are known or suspected to have had prior drift mining activity on them. In many cases, there is no documentation on these mines or, at best, very fragmented records. These undocumented abandoned underground mines are creating engineering, financial, and environmental difficulties and concerns for both surface coal mine operators and regulatory personnel. This paper examines the use of resistivity techniques in detecting entries of abandoned drift coal mines. The detection of such a drift mine entry would confirm the presence and orientation of an abandoned underground coal mine.

Sustainability management and reporting plays an important role in controlling and communicating a company's efforts in sustainable development. A variety of standards comprising a multitude of indicators often require similar information but with different data quality, level of detail and coverage. This may lead to inconsistencies in external communication because of the difficulties in collection and aggregation of data from different company sites and organisational levels. Using a central database system accessible via internet makes the process of data management more efficient: All relevant information can be collected on-site, with a defined data quality, credibility and consistency. Any type of sustainability indicator can be calculated automatically, once the data is collected. Individual analyses and predefined reports, e.g. GRI G3, can be easily generated and immediately published, making your sustainability communication transparent and reliable.
