Technical progress depends on strategic objectives and a concept showing how to benefit from the effects of novel techniques in an innovation process and how to implement them creatively in harmony with manpower capabilities. With the invention of prime movers, it was initially power engineering which dominated the development of industrial history before it was replaced by production techniques resulting from the more widespread use of machines. With the advances in the field of data processing and with the introduction of novel communication techniques, it is information technology- which today is having an ever increasing impact on technological progress. The main objectives of information technology in this context are a positive influence on the ?time? factor as well as the provision of tools to handle the complexity governing many operational processes through a concentration of information for the decision-making process. The German hardcoal industry became aware of the chances inherent in these new technological possibilities for the optimization of operational sequences and of decision-making and planning processes as a potential for success at an early stage and it has worked out a purposeful concept for their implementation.

At periodic intervals-typically at the end of each month, quarter, and year- the accounting department in each division of a company distributes a set of reports to the division's managers. These reports describe the financial performance of the division and its major departments over the time period. They identify the revenues generated from the division's products and the costs incurred in their production. The results from individual departments are combined to determine divisional results, and the results from individual divisions are in turn consolidated to determine the results for the overall corporation. Cost reports for each of these activities show actual amounts, budgeted amounts, and the differences between the two. This reporting is carried out for the individual period and for the year to date.

Intense, tropical weathering of Cretaceous-Tertiary sediments has developed similar laterites in distant areas of the Amazon Basin. In two areas, Trombetas and Paragomina s, bauxites of commercial potential arc found. The bauxite comes mostly from the lower horizon of the three component laterite. The laterite is overlain by a clay cover, possibly an integral part of the weathered profile. The laterites are found on almost flat plateaus with individual areas of up to 80km2. There is a close relationship between the morphology and the ldterites. The process of lateritization is allegedly Pliocence but probably continues today.

Experiments have been conducted on a 76¬mm water-only cyclone treating cowl below 2 mm size having different proportion of -0.075 mm fines. The effect of cone angle of the cyclone (compound cone) has been analyzed on water split, separation of -0.075 mm fines, separation of coarse solids, and on separation behavior of individual size ructions of the feed. It has been noted from the results that there exists a linear relationship between the flow rate of water in the feed and flow rate of water reporting to overflow stream. This relationship is independent of the cone angle and, with changes in the fines content in the feed, only the intercept of the straight varies, keeping the slope constant. Further, it has also been found that the percentage of fines below 0.075 mm reporting to the overflow is directly proportional to the percentage of feed wafer reporting to the overflow. This relationship is found to be independent of the cone angle and the fines in the feed. The performance of the water-only cyclone has been analyzed by plotting partition curves for different experimental conditions. In addition to this, the Rosin-Rammler equation has been fitted to the partition curves of the hulk feed and individual size-fractions. Tile analysis of the results has revealed that the specific gravity of separation increases with increase in the cone angle of the cyclone while it decreases with increase in percent fines present in the feed. Mathematical relationships have been developed to relate the variation in SG50 with cone angle and percent fines in the feed.

Longwall mining is considered to be the most efficient underground coal-mining technique in terms of coal extraction ratio, production rate and safety standards. Due to the increasing demand for higher coal production, the recent trends have been to use wider panels and to maintain a faster face movement. For these reasons, longwall mining can result in unexpected roof falls, excessive face convergence, shield damage and numerous maintenance problems, which can cause sudden interruption of coal production as well as serious safety hazards. Recent work at the University of Alabama has been dedicated to the development of a longwall strata-control and maintenance system that can integrate real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis, forecasting and warning modules. This integrated system has been called LoSCoMS. The main objective of the system is to provide minute-by-minute stability and maintenance information such as the following: high-load, low-setting pressure, leg leakage, etc.; the analysis of various mining and geological parameters to determine past and present roof characteristics; and the forecasting of loading patterns for the following mining cycles, the next periodic weighting, etc. By using this unique system, mine operations personnel are well aware of past, present and future roof-loading patterns at the longwall face and, thus, proper safety measures can be taken ahead of time.

Characterization and analysis of multiphase particles and/or particulate systems (such as the packed particle bed) are of great technological importance for mineral processing applications. In general the performance of these applications depends on the statistical characteristics of particle microstructures, such as composition distribution, surface exposure of mineral grains, pore network structure, etc. For continued technological progress in the field of multiphase particulate processes, the need for quantitative spatial analysis of multiphase particles in three dimensions has increased sign6cantly. Such quantitative information must be accurate enough that the measured values can be used as parameters for simulation models, process design procedures, and control strategies. Modern 3D image-acquisition techniques, such as X-ray microtomography (XMT), offer a unique imaging capability that can produce high-resolution (a few micrometers) three-dimensional images of the internal structure of multiphase particulate samples. These three-dimensional image data present new challenges for image analysis, image processing, and visualization. Furthermore, important issues should focus on how to use the 3D information and derive new insights into the improvement, design, and operation of mineral processing processes. In this paper, utilization of XMT for characterization and analysis of leaching process involving multiphase particulate system is discussed.

This paper presents an algorithm for the de- termination of a production schedule for an open pit mine that satisfies all principal physical and economic constraints required by a realistic mine design. We propose to model the evolution of the mine over time as a sequential optimization problem or, equivalently, as a problem of finding a path with a largest value in a graph. Some preliminary evidence is provided that such a path can be effectively sought by an algorithm that combines a number of heuristic search rules, inspired in part by learning theories developed in Artificial Intelligence.

Condition monitoring of conveyor belting has become an established tool for maintenance programming, replacement strategies and quality assurance for belt conveyor systems. What is less well known is that the condition of the conveyor belting is usually a symptom of problems in other areas rather than the problem source. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art in belt monitoring and the move towards on-line NDT systems. The use of belt monitoring data as an indicator for overall system design, maintenance and operation is also discussed.

The adsorption of copper and lead und their subsequent xanthate uptake were compared at pH 3.0, 6.0 and 9.2 on both fresh and oxidized sphalerite. The extent of adsorption and the rate of adsorption were strongly dependent on pH, with the highest adsorption of Cu and Pb being at pH 9.2. In the presence of both Cu and Pb, Cu adsorption was enhanced and Pb adsorption was suppressed. The adsorption kinetics of Cu and Pb were characterized by two- and three-stage adsorption processes, respectively. The exchange ratio of Cu to Zn was about one and that of Ph to Zn was greater than one and varied with pH. The uptake of xarlthate on "activated" sphalerite was dependent on pH. The rnaximum uptake was found to be at pH 6.0 for Cu-activated sphalerite artd at pH 9.2 for Pb-activated sphalerite. A measure of "activation strength" based on inetal ion adsorption and xanthate uptake was introduced. The activation strength of Cu to Pb was about one at acidic pH, but it was higher at neutral (pH -6) and alkaline (pH -3) conditions. The oxidation of sphalerite decreased Pb and, especially, Cu adsorption and decreased xanthate uptake.

There has been a significant progress in the use of mathematical modeling and simulation in the minerals industry in the last decade. Process models have moved from academic world to important industrial tools. This paper reviews the status of mineral processing simulators and recent progress in simulator development and applications is discussed. The simulation for process design and optimisation is now an established technique, as evidenced by its increasing use of practising engineers through commercially available simulator software. The paper presents a systematic approach to the process study procedure for the control system development, clarified by practical case examples calculated by SimCon - a novel steady-state simulator for mineral processes. Examples of the application of SimCon in drawing flowsheets, calculating mass balances and making simulations for grinding and flotation processes are presented. At the end of the paper, the state-of-the-art and the future of computer-aided pro- cess study at mineral processing plants is discussed. The influence of passageway fires on ventilation flows was investigated in three horizontal fire tunnel s: 1. a laboratory-scale fire tunnel network, 2. a small-scale fire-plume tunnel, and 3. a large- scale simulated mine gallery. Wood was used in the first and third tunnel and gas-burners were used in the second one to generate passageway fires. Experimental measurements included gas mass flow rate, velocity, temperature and pressure in the passageways and exhaust fans. The overall and local effects of the fires were investigated by comparing these measurements obtained before and during the fires. Results show that a passageway fire essentially increases the flow resistances of the passageways of a tunnel flow network by virtue of volatile fuel mass injection and high combustion temperatures. The ventilation air flow rate is consequently throttled to lower values than that before the fire. At severe throttling, reverse flow occurs. Conditions for reverse flow are characterized by two Froude numbers based on gas velocity and density upstream of the fire, and height of the passageway. The Froude numbers and the characteristics of the passageway fire are necessary to analyze mine ventilation/fire interaction and to predict mine ventilation patterns during fires.

Paste is a high density mixture of water and fine solid particles with a relatively low water content (10-25%) such that the mixture has a consistency as measured by the ASTM slump cone test from slightly greater than zero up to nearly 12 inches (305mm). Particles of different size classes will not segregate or settle when the paste is not being agitated or when it is stationary in a pipeline. Cement may be a component of paste. Larger particles of aggregate can generally be added to a paste without greatly changing the pipeline transport characteristics. A paste may bleed water slightly when it is allowed to be motionless for periods of up to several hours, but the solids do not become so dense that the paste cannot be easily re-fluidized. The dividing line between the definition of a high density slurry and a paste is not sharp. It is a practical matter that must be considered when designing a pipeline transportation system. If the pipeline is very short, there is very little risk of plugging the pipeline with a high density slurry when flow is stopped for short time periods. With longer pipelines the mixture must remain stable without motion for periods as long as several hours to avoid pipeline plugging. The fine particles in a paste mixture can be composed of mine tailings or naturally-occurring clays, silts and fine sands. The mineralogy of the particles thus can have a wide variety from quartz and feldspar to clays, micas and even salts.

An ore microscopic study of the Boss-Bixby, Missouri, copper-iron deposit has shown that the mineralization formed as a simple sequence of oxides followed by cobaltian sulfides, copper-iron sulfides, and then oxides. The hypogene ore minerals found by this study are magnetite, hematite, ilmenite, rutile, chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, cobaltian pyrite, carrollite, sphalerite, clausthalite, galena, electrum, scheelite, wolframite, and a Pb-Bi-Se-Te mineral. Textural evidence indicates that some of the early oxides were original constituents of the host syenites and oxidized during cooling. The remainder of the mineralization formed as breccia fillings and replacements. Subsequent partial oxidation has formed martite, covellite, rutile, and anatase.

The difficulties associated with performing direct tensile strength test lead to development of indirect test methods, which are simple, less expensive, and less time consuming. Splitting tensile strength test (Brazilian test) is performed by applying two opposite concentrated compression load across the diameter of a disk specimen until the failure occurs along the loaded diameter. Theoretically, the load is applied over a small width as a line load, however, by increasing the load, the contact width between the loading jaw and the specimen increases as the specimen deforms. The main aim of this study is to investigate the stress distribution in (1) regular Brazilian specimen in traditional tests with loading jaws and (2) flattened Brazilian specimen with flat platens. A series of the splitting tensile strength tests and uniaxial compression strength tests are performed on three rock types: rhyolite, basalt, and limestone. Further, Numerical modeling studies are performed to investigate the effect of the contact between jaw and Brazilian specimen on stress distribution in the disc specimen based on the results from the experimentation. Finally, the stress distribution in the traditional Brazilian test specimen and the flattened end Brazilian test specimen were compared.

A number of studies have attempted to correlate the semiconducting properties of mineral sulfides with their chemical reactivity. Frequently such studies are conducted on polished or abraded electrodes. Defects produced by abrasion may mask the influence of the semiconducting properties of electrodes, e.g., by pinning the Fermi level at the surface or by reducing the lifetimes of photogenerated charge carriers. It is shown that pyrite and galena electrodes have photocurrents that are extremely sensitive to abrasion of the electrodes. On freshly fractured galena surfaces, the space charge layer is readily polarized. Wet-abrasion is shown to produce a relatively thick ptype layer on galena electrodes and this p-type layer has a pronounced effect on the photoresponse. On freshly fractured pyrite surfaces, the Fermi level at the surface is pinned by a surface state. Wet-polishing reduces the magnitude of the photocurrent by over an order of magnitude.

Geopolymerization is a process by which Al-Si minerals undergo dissolution and polymerization in an alkaline solution to form a monolithic material with a high mechanical strength (Davidovits, 1991, 1994). In this study, the factors affecting the geopolymerization of Na feldspar (albite) and K -feldspar (microcline) were investigated. It was found that both Na feldspar and K -feldspar are reactive in geopolymerization with the resultant geopolymers showing a high compressive strength. The leaching ability, the proper molar ratio of Si/Al in the geopolymeric gel phase and the higher average hardness of the undissolved particles remaining in the geopolymers are found to greatly affect the ultimate compressive strength of the formed geopolymers. This paper summarizes a three phase face ventilation study which was conducted from September 1989 through March 1990 to determine face area methane liberation patterns on two extended longwall sections. The coal seam being mined was considered gassy and the mine liberated an average of 14.4 million cubic feet per day (cfd) or 0.41 million cubic meters per day (cmd) of methane through the mine fans. The mine also used an extensive underground degasification program to recover up to 13.4 million cfd (0.38 million cmd) of methane. Data was collected while the longwall sections were mining from the beginning, middle and end of panel extraction to determine the relationship between the methane liberation and extent of longwall retreat. As expected, methane concentrations did increase from the headgate (intake) to the tailgate (return) side of the longwall face and peak concentrations were detected above the shearer as it passed a methanometer location during mining. There were significant differences in the methane liberations due to the location of the active face within the longwall panel. Results from this study could be used to determine a minimum design face air quantity for an extended longwall section operating under similar conditions.

One of the most costly factors in the production of aluminum is the consumption of energy in the form of electricity. Energy consumption is increased as refractories in the Hall-Heroult reduction cells are corroded by penetration of the fluxes cryolite (Na3AlF6) and villiaumite (NaF). To decrease thermal conductivity and refractory waste, protective barrier linings are installed. Dry powder barrier linings form stable reaction products at cell operating temperatures. Four dry powders composed of vermiculite, corundum, wollastonite, and anorthite are characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction, reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and cathodoluminescence microscopy in this research project.

The paper covers mining operations and preparation of the ore prior to metallurgical treatment in the Process Plant. Mining operations are primarily concerned with the delivery to Ore Preparation of a balanced ore feed within fairly rigid specifications as to both ore type and chemical analysis. The mining method, systems of geological and engineering control, and the equipment employed are therefore reviewed in this context. In Part One of the paper the physical and geological characteristics of the orebodies, including the varied nature of the ore itself, are first described. Orebody evaluation, the calculation and classification of ore reserves, mining planning and forecasting to ensure continuity of production are covered, and the particular problems presented by sampling, the erratic distribution of ore values and the variation in the density of the ores are also mentioned. Mine design and ore excavation practice are described, together with the way in which they have evolved with recent developments in modern mining equipment. In Part Two of the paper, a detailed description of the Ore Preparation plant is given, centred around the concept of rubbling as a means of separation of the barren hard boulders from soft lateritic ore. Ore blending and ore reclamation operations are explained followed by a detailed description of the drying and crushing plant. The importance of the control of moisture content and ore sizing in the feed to the metallurgical plant is emphasized.
