Automated mineralogical analysis of platinum group minerals (PGM), using the mineral liberation analyser, provides information used to understand flotation efficiency, primarily from a PGM liberation and association standpoint. To date, however, there is no consistent understanding regarding PGM speciation and its impact on floatability. Previous studies of PGM from UG2 ores concluded that a larger dataset is needed from which the various parameters can be modelled. Parameters on telluride, arsenide, sulfurarsenide and alloy species need to be integrated to fully understand the impact of PGM speciation on flotation, and for this, ores other than PGE-sulfide-rich UG2 must be assessed. Flotation rougher rate tests were performed on feed samples from two Platreef ores to determine the flotation response of individual liberated PGM species. This was achieved through automated mineralogical analysis of feed, rougher concentrates and tails. Based on 1529 liberated PGM grains assessed over the circuit for two Platreef ores, preliminary results show that PGM speciation, species grain size and competition from gangue appear to influence floatability in an ‘optimised’ laboratory environment. In this paper, which is aimed to serve as a review article, first of all a breakdown of the earth?s total water reserves is given. The usage areas of water in the mining industry are mentioned and these uses are briefly outlined, together with the main pollution potential of each. According to this, most of the water (almost 80% of it) is utilized in processing. Later on, probable damages that the mining would give to groundwater as a result of acid mine drainage, heavy metal pollution, euthrophication and deoxygenation is described. Finally, the measures and controls that should be taken against water contamination in mines are presented.

Flotation involves the selective levitation of mineral and its transfer from cell to launder. The flotation rate is the rate of this transfer. It may be defined by the slope of a recovery-time curve for any cell in a bank or at any time in a batch operation. The objective in flotation rate study is an equation expressing the rate in terms of some measurable property of the pulp. This can be either the concentration of floatable mineral in weight per unit volume or a relative concentration, which will be a function of the recovery. A rate equation for an actual flotation pulp will contain at least two constants, both to be determined from the collected data. The data used in this paper were collected from bench-scale flotation tests on Konkola primary mill cyclone overflow at various pulp densities and pre-flotation thickener underflow at a pulp density of 35% solids by weight.

In May 2009 a test work programme was carried out at the sorting laboratory of CommodasUltrasort in Germany which was aimed at establishing the efficiency of X- ray transmission sorting for the recovery of unliberated diamonds in a size range of +8mm. A PRO Tertiary XRT belt sorter with a working width of 600mm and a belt speed of -3mJs was used for the test work. Dual energy X-ray transmission sorting is a type of sensor-based sorting which uses an X-ray scanning system, The attenuation of the transmitting X-rays is measured at two different energy levels, Thereby it is possible to eliminate the effect of the particle thickness on the measurement result. The effective measurement results in a classification by elemental order based on the periodic table.

The FUTURE project aims to enhance seismic surveying in South African mining by integrating advanced acquisition technologies. In this paper, we detail surface and underground seismic surveys at the South Deep gold mine as part of the project. Surface seismic acquisition used co-located broadband micro-electromechanical sensors, one and three component recorders connected to geophones, distributed acoustic sensing using a straight fibre optic cable, along with a 6 ton broadband seismic vibrator operating with 4–180 Hz linear sweeps. In addition, underground surveys employed a combination of straight, and helically wound fibre optic cables, cabled-based and nodal sensors, along with a 500 kg drophammer mounted on a skid steer bobcat. The surface and underground seismic arrays were time synchronised using a GPS-time transmitter to allow for accurate seismic data recording in a GPS-denied environment. Results show the efficacy of these techniques in acquiring high-resolution seismic data, revealing detailed subsurface geological structures and mineralisation down to 3500 m below ground surface. Surface data revealed clear seismic reflections corresponding to the Black Reef and Ventersdorp Contact Reef. An underground P-wave velocity model exhibits low velocity anomalies that are associated with fracturing, while a P-wave reflection stack section shows significant reflections and a degree of faulting below the tunnel floor that was not observed on the surface reflection seismic data. We highlight the potential of these technologies to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining. This study sets a benchmark for future reflection seismic surveys, paving the way for safer, more efficient, deep mineral exploration and extraction practices.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company?s annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices. The Gurney approach to explosive/inert material interaction was adapted to analyse the face velocity in bench blasting. The model is based on the blasthole diameter, rock and explosive density, burden, spacing, linear charge density, and the Gurney energy constant. It is validated by comparing its predictions with a set of 20 field measurements of face velocities reported by Chiappetta et al. (1983) in an iron ore mine. The Gurney model links the observed large scatter of measured face velocities to the variation of the Gurney energy constant. This in turn is linked to the variability of the gas pressure acting on the burden. These variable pressures are generated when detonation product gases migrate into the extensive and complex fracture network around and between in-row blastholes. The energy efficiency of burden movement can be derived from the model. It is shown that ~7% of the explosive’s chemical energy is available for gas expansion work on the burden; of this quantity, 36% is actually converted to burden kinetic energy. That is, less than 3% of chemical energy is ultimately expended in burden displacement and throw. The model further indicatesnthat the projection of high-velocity (say, 100 m/s) flyrock is possible only when the path of leastnresistance through the burden has an effective density far less than the host rock. An equationnis derived that identifies the combinations of burden and path density that may yield flyrock. These values are specific to a particular baseline blast design.

Two examples are presented to show how first-principles – physical-dynamic, here termed behavioural modelling, is used to build digital twins of unit processes or plant sections. A digital twin equips the metallurgist, engineer, or manager with a powerful tool to conduct model-based design, solve process problems and improve operations. It is particularly relevant in the metallurgical industry where plant behaviour is highly integrated, rates respond to particle dynamics in complicated ways and mineral flows across flowsheet boundaries are variable. The two examples used to illustrate the behavioural modelling methodology are 1) a flotation column unit block and 2) a multi-compartment pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave. It simultaneously accounts for the causality of material and heat flow, takes care of mineral particle dynamics, physical and chemical reaction rates, the plant control system behaviour and operating heuristics. The basic modelling building blocks are briefly reviewed to show how the behavioural modelling attributes constrain the mass and heat flow dynamics to physically realistic values. This is the key aspect that allows project value to be created with minimal input data. Behavioural modelling is especially valuable where the process dynamics are poorly understood or controlled, where data-driven models fail to cope with complex and highly integrated plant behaviour, where quality data is lacking or limited funds are available to generate the data required to fill all the knowledge gaps. The paper uses the flotation column example to show how behavioural modelling and simulation can be used to optimise plant performance, while the multi-compartment POX autoclave model shows how it can be used to diagnose process problems. It also provides a solid basis to add a data-driven component – in other words, it makes a strong case for a hybrid first-principle– data-driven approach to solve process problems, especially where microscopic-level understanding is poor. Muckpile fragmentation formed by blasting depends on the specific charge factor, the discontinuities in the rock mass, and the rock strength. Determination of the discontinuity characteristics and rock strength is a long and difficult process. These two parameters are directly associated with the rock drilling speed. Therefore, it is the drilling speed of the machine used for the blast-hole, rather than the blasthole discontinuity characteristics and rock strength parameters, that is used in the prediction of muckpile fragmentation before blasting. Primarily, it has been suggested that the muckpile fragmentation values can be correctly determined by establishing correlations between the efficiency of the loader and muck pile fragmentation, since fragmentation is directly correlated with the former parameter. Subsequently, a correlation predicting the drilling speed of the drill machine was developed according to the discontinuity characteristics of the blasting surface and the rock strength. Finally, a correlation was developed predicting muckpile fragmentation according to the specific charge factor and the drilling speed of the drill machine The data was obtained by conducting blasting tests in two different limestone quarries.

The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.

This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

"Typical operation of industrial Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) used in copper smelting results in several common phenomena such as excessive splashing, slopping, tuyere blockage, and low converter campaign life due to high tuyere line refractory erosion. These phenomena give rise to an inefficient operation from both a process and an energy perspective.This investigation presents numerical and physical models of flow patterns, mixing, solid-liquid mass transfer, and slag-matte phase distribution in a slice model of an industrial PSC. For physical simulations, a 0.2-scale cold model was developed. Water, kerosene, air, and sintered benzoic acid compacts were used to simulate matte, slag, injected gas, and solid additions into the PSC. The two- and three-dimensional numerical simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using volume of fluid (VOF) and realizable k- e (RKE) turbulence models to account for the multiphase and turbulence nature of the flow respectively. These models were implemented using the commercial computational fluid dynamics numerical code FLUENT.Both numerical and physical simulations were able to predict, in agreement, the mixing and dispersion characteristics of the system in relation to various blowing conditions employed in the investigation. Measurement of mass transfer characteristics conclusively indicated that fluid flow in the PSC is stratified. Both blowing configuration and volume of slag in the converters were found to have significant effects on mixing propagation, wave formation, and splashing.The splashing and wave motion in these converters are known to cause losses of metal/matte and potential production time due to the requirement for intermittent cleaning of the converter mouth, resulting in reduced process throughput. To prevent these losses and hence to increase process efficiency, we propose a combined blowing configuration using top lance and lateral nozzles. The numerical simulations were conducted on combined, as well as lateral, blowing conditions. In comparison, the recent results of the combined blowing concept were found to be encouraging."

Metal inventories are usually reported in financial statements of mining companies. However, the value of these inventories can be reliable only if the metals in stock are measured within acceptable tolerances. Reliable metal balancing requires accurate mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis. Many mining companies are usually unable to validate the accuracy of metals in inventories at the end of their financial year. This is mainly due to poor mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis practices. This has an adverse impact on metallurgical accounting and metal valuation. In addition, it puts a lot of stress on external auditors, who have the duty to recommend the approval of the financial statements to the board of directors. Although a full value chain of metal reconciliation includes the accuracy of Mineral Reserve definition and grade control at the mine, this paper discusses the implementation of best practices for mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis at processing plants. This is an important aspect of sampling and reconciliation that is required in order to improve the reporting of inventories in the financial statements of public mining companies. The traditional route utilised for the recovery of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) in South Africa involves the concentration of ore by flotation, followed by smelting to produce a PGM rich matte, which is then digested hydrometallurgically to solubilise base metals and Platinum Group Elements (PGE). HCl/Cl2 is conventionally used for PGE dissolution from concentrated material, which is an aggressive reagent associated with high maintenance costs as well as environmental concerns. Of interest is the leaching of PGMs directly from mineral ores, low grade concentrates and tailings in a cyanide-ferricyanide system as a more sustainable alternative. This system has shown favourable Pt recoveries among the Pt minerals, but with sperrylite (PtAs2) displaying highly refractory behaviour. The dissolution of sperrylite is investigated in a cyanide-ferricyanide system in the context of an electrochemical study involving OCP, chrono-amperometry and cyclic voltammetry. This approach allows the assessment of leaching characteristics as well as the investigation of surface passivation, which is believed to contribute to poor Pt recoveries. Determination of the optimum cut-off grades is one of the most important aspects of mine production planning. A cut-off is a grade below which we choose not to process material. This material is treated as waste and dumped. Dumping waste is accompanied by the rehabilitation cost which will affect the overall cost of final production and also the optimum cut-off grade. Rehabilitation cost is the cost per ton of rehabilitating material of a particular type of rock after it has been dumped as waste. One of the most popular algorithms for determination of the optimum cut-off grade is Lane?s method. Lane formulated the cut-off grade optimization, but he did not consider rehabilitation cost during the optimization process. This cost item should be evaluated first, and then considered during the cut-off grade optimization process. In this paper the rehabilitation cost is inserted directly into the cut-off grade optimization process using Lane?s theory. The cut-off grades obtained using the suggested method will be more realistic than ones using the original form of Lane?s formulations.
