The concepts involved in flotation research are discussed and aims are presented. Three different methods of investigation can be used, all of which are applied at the National Institute for Metallurgy (N.I.M.), and these are the empirical, trial and error method, the chemical engineering method, and the physicochemical approaches. This paper is devoted to the last of these. Because of the complexity of the physicochemical interactions involved, the work has, to a large extent, been concentrated on only one aspect, viz. the interaction between the mineral surface and reagents in solution, which was considered of major importance in the understanding of the process. The aspects on which work has been done are the concentration of uranium, the reaction between salt minerals and fatty acids, mixed xanthate-cationic collector systems, and the reaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents. Selected problems from the first two of these are discussed in some detail and deal with the agglomeration flotation of uranium and the chemical control of the flotation process for phoscorite. A detailed discussion is also presented of the progress made in the understanding of the interaction between sulphide minerals and thiol reagents, which is of more general application. Finally, an indication is given of the future direction of physicochemical research at the N.I.M.

"Platinum is a highly valuable resource, its safe and economic extraction is paramount. The success of platinum mining by the bord and pillar method depends heavily on a comprehensive and dependable pillar design method. Pillars need to be large enough to safely support the load and small enough to avoid loss of resources. A critical evaluation of current pillar design systems used in narrow-reef platinum mining was undertaken using practical experience from a large feasibility-stage platinum exploration project, supplemented by observations from several platinum mines in Zimbabwe. An extensive literature survey was undertaken in order to determine the current status of design systems. Through this approach, the shortcomings of current pillar design systems are highlighted. Areas are proposed for further research to obtain a better understanding on how additional factors influence pillar system stability. The exploration work highlighted how rock mass classification methods can be utilized in determining the overall strength of pillars. Current pillar design systems for narrow-reef platinum mining consider width-to-heightratio (usually with different exponents for width and height) and the strength of the pillar material. However, there are many more important factors that are not considered and which have a bearing on pillar system stability. An in-depth study of these parameters with a view to establish effective narrow- reef platinum mining pillar design systems needs to be undertaken. IntroductionPillars have been used as a means of support since the early days of mining. Pillarsupported mining methods such as bord and pillar require a reliable design system for them to be successful. This paper presents an evaluation of the current hard-rock mining pillar design systems as applied to a practical large-scale narrow-reef platinum mining feasibility study. It is vital to have a dependable pillar design system for economic and sustainable mining. Using an extensive database collected from the project, the pillar strength formulae were tested and several discrepancies noted. This necessitates the establishment of more reliable pillar design systems. In narrow-reef platinum mining, large compressive stresses accompanied by geological and geotechnical factors contribute to pillar instability. A well-formulated pillar design system is required that accounts for such factors so as to minimize pillar failures."

A stepwise arrangement of flotation cells is the most common layout of a flotation circuit in the mineral processing industry. In such a design, slurry flows from upstream to downstream by means of gravity, and the middling products are returned to previous stages by pumps. This paper will introduce an alternative solution in which the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cells are adopted so that all the flotation cells can be placed on the same horizontal platform and no pumps will be needed for middling product transferring. The technology of the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cell will be described in detail, including unique features, the working principle and the related fundamental problems. The comparison of capital investment, operating cost and metallurgical performance will be made between the conventional stepwise arrangement and the samelevel arrangement technology based on industrial practice. The vast majority of the roughly 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA each year use resin cartridges1. About 4.5 million of these bolts are installed using a mechanical shell in addition to the resin to create an active (pre-tensioned) bolt. Over 1 million of the bolts are passive cable bolts and typically have an effective grout length of 1.2 m, regardless of the cable length, which could be as long as 6 m. The successful performance of the resin grouted bolts depends on several parameters, including the annular gap between the bolt and hole wall, which should be relatively small, ideally from 3 mm to 5 mm. This requirement, combined with the high viscosity of the resin, produces a high back-pressure that can cause the bolt being installed to buckle or not be installed to standard. It is this back-pressure that limits the effective grout length with passive cable bolts and causes the mechanically anchored bolt failures (typically called ?spinners? where the mechanical shell does not anchor). This creates potentially unsafe conditions and wastes time and money. A purpose, built rig was used to mimic underground installations and record the back-pressures during full scale applications in the laboratory. This information was used, and is still being used, to reduce the failures and sub-standard installations by producing improved designs. In addition, a flow model was calibrated that can act qualitatively to estimate the back-pressures and can be used as a crude screening process before full scale prototypes are built and tested. To date, the results obtained have been used to stop the use of a mechanical shell due to the proven higher rate of failures. A new, improved mechanical shell is being field tested and another system is underdevelopment. The use of the rig is therefore ongoing to develop improved mechanical anchor systems. It is too early for real data; however, anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that significant improvements can and will be made.

In the hope of finding out what the readers of the SAIMM Journal want of our Journal, we sent out a questionnaire with the October 1979 issue. The 2500 copies of the questionnaire sent out elicited 228 responses, which represents a return of 8,8 per cent. The number of responses received from overseas was 24, i.e., approximately 10 per cent of the total. The following is an analysis of the responses received.

The presence of impurities such as Se and Te in copper sulfate leach solutions can have a detrimental effect on electrowinning efficiency. These elements can be removed from the solution by precipitation; sulfurous acid is commonly used as a precipitation reagent, while studies have also reported improved precipitation with the addition of metallic copper. This paper aimed to determine the effect of conditions used during the solution purification step on the characteristics of the precipitates that formed. Precipitation tests were performed in a batch reactor with copper sulfate leach solutions obtained from the base metal refinery of a platinum group metal producer. The effects of agitation rate (250 and 500 rpm), SO2 flow rate (4.4 and 5.8 mL/min.L), temperature (65 and 95°C) and metallic copper powder addition (0, 1 and 2 g/L) on the characteristics of the precipitates formed during the tests were determined using scanning electron microscopy. The major phases detected in the precipitates formed when using SO2 as the only precipitation reagent were elemental Se and Cu2Se. The introduction of copper powder led to the production of different sulfide phases for the experiments conducted at 65°C irrespective of the values of the other reaction parameters. At 95°C, Cu crystals, Cu2O and tiny inclusions of Cu2(Se,Te) were the prominent phases noticed in the precipitates produced from all the tests conducted with copper powder as precipitation enhancing reagent. This article outlines various projects implemented at Rand Refinery to reduce effluent generation and freshwater consumption. The refinery generates about 2800 m³ of effluent annually and has initiated projects such as granulation water recycle and silver leach optimisation to address these issues. The granulation water recycle project has successfully reduced effluent volumes, while the silver leach optimisation has further decreased effluent by implementing stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3. The vibratory shear enhanced processing (VSEP) trial showed promising results for gold recovery from wastewater, though further trials are recommended. The water savings of the effluent reduction projects are monitored by measuring the amount of effluent pumped to service yard effluent storage facilities with the use of flow meters connected on SCADA. Since the effluent reduction initiative of granulation effluent recycle in FY23, the effluent reduced to 2676 m³. In FY24, the stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3 was implemented in the silver leach process, further reducing the effluent to 2083 m³.

SYNOPSIS As a result of a test programme over a period of approximately ten years and a decision to extend the uranium plant, it was decided to design and erect the first full-scale Purlex Plant in the Republic of South Africa. The plant at Buffelsfontein G.M. Co. Ltd. was commissioned in August, 1968, and to date has produced results superior to those predicted in the original estimates. The capital expenditure was R678 000 for a plant capable of treating 1 600 gallons per minute of pregnant solution. Compared with the conventional resin ion exchange process, it has been found that the saving in production costs is 21 cents per pound U3O8 produced. The amine loss is 10 parts per million, which is equivalent to a total organic loss of 250 parts per million. The uranium loss in the raffinate is less than 0.001 g/l U3O8. The final product is of a high quality and it is probable that it is pure enough to convert to the fluoride directly.

It is perhaps somewhat unusual for a contributor to comment on the authors' reply to his critique. However, I should like to return to a specific comment made by the authors. Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands. This paper is a study of the ventilation, cooling and refrigeration system design of the Mindola copper mine in Zambia. The challenges that were addressed varied from the restrictions imposed by an ageing infrastructure to the requirement for increasing the annual production rate, coupled to the introduction of a higher level of mechanization while maintaining acceptable conditions and limiting total ownership costs. A description of how the ventilation, refrigeration and cooling systems were modelled in order to obtain the projected heat loads associated with two different mining methods over the life of the project. The methodology included a number of iterations to optimise the design and include aspects such as the expected inrush of hot fissure water, the operation of diesel machinery at depths in excess of 1500m below surface, developing a cost-efficient cooling strategy and selection of the refrigeration machinery to meet the requirements imposed by the cooling strategy. This paper demonstrates the successful implementation of an integrated design approach.

In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

Scandium can be recovered from waste streams of other metallurgical processes such as red mud from the Bayer process and titanium dioxide acid waste. This is accomplished by an integrated process comprising leaching using acidic media, solvent extraction using organic solvents and stripping of Sc from the organic phase using NH4F solutions. The precipitation of scandium as (NH4)3ScF6 from NH4F strip liquors has been demonstrated at lab-scale with recoveries and purities greater than 98% and 98.3%, respectively. It is desired to assess the possibility of recovering the solvents for re-use in the process to improve its economy and environmental friendliness. Investigations have been conducted to recover alcohol by simple distillation from strip liquor-alcohol mixtures containing about 50 v/v% alcohol. The mixtures were obtained after anti-solvent precipitation of (NH4)3ScF6 using an alcohol to strip liquor volumetric ratio of 1:1. The starting strip liquor contained about 2000 mg/L scandium in 3 mol/L NH4F solution. In the recovery of methanol, the first distillate product collected had a purity of about 87 v/v% and this decreased slightly with time over two hours. The methanol distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of ca. 85 v/v% was re-used in anti-solvent crystallisation of (NH4)3ScF6 from the initial strip liquor, and the scandium recovery attained was about 98.6 w/w%, almost similar to that of 99.2 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% methanol. For ethanol recovery, the first distillate product collected was approx. 84 v/v% pure and the distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of about 75 v/v% achieved a scandium recovery of about 97.2 w/w% in comparison to 98.5 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% ethanol during anti-solvent crystallisation. You will appreciate that, in the eighty odd years since the Institute was founded, the diversity of subjects has been very great. In almost all cases it is quite natural that the speaker should have chosen a topic of special interest to him and one in which he was particularly knowledgeable.
