Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.

Mercury exists in coal in minute quantities, but the large tonnages of coal consumed could represent relatively large amounts of mercury entering the environment. Limits have now been placed on the emission of mercury, and it is important that reliable analytical methods be available to the chemist. The Bureau of Mines has evaluated analytical techniques used by a number of laboratories; most used vapor phase atomic absorption as the final detection method. Neutron activation was used by some of the laboratories. All of the methods described could be applied, but they require careful manipulation to prevent loss or mercury contamination. In the samples analyzed the mercury content ranged between 0.05±0.01 and 0.4l±0.06 part per million.

This paper is one of a series giving the results of metallurgical tests conducted by: the Alaska station of the Federal Bureau of Iſines, on the recovery of gold from the black sands of placer clean-ups. The data given in this report were obtained from tests on a lot of black sand from a property located on St. Patrick Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska. This property comprises the Sagan Fraction and adjoining bench claims, and is being operated by J. A. Lillie. The sand ad already been treated at the mine by amalgamation. A sample taken by Mr. Lillie and assayed at the station showed that the gold still remain ing amounted to ll cents per pound. As this gold content was sufficiently high to justify further treatment of the same, 770 pounds were shipped to the station for testing. The reader will note that the gold content is given in cents per pouni, rather than per ton. This is in conformity with practice in the district in valuing black sands, as the quantity obtained at any one time is small, much less than one ton. . The sand consisted principally of schist and quartz, with very little ilmenite and garnet; and no magnetite or sulphides. Most of the gold present as contaminated with quartz, as the free particles of gold had been removed by amalgamation at the mine.

Reduce dust at the auger mine face by modifying airflow patterns, around the minim machine. Approach Limited clearance between an auger miner and the mine root restricts airflow across the face and causes dust rollback. Directional sprays arc used to direct air across the face, thereby reducing dust rollback and increasing dust dilution (fig. 1). Laboratory and underground studies were used to test and optimize effectiveness of the directional sprays. Results of Laboratory Study Laboratory experiments were conducted in a simulated auger gallery equipped with a full-scale mock auger miner and bridge conveyor. A dual curtain configuration was used to direct the, ventilation, which averaged 2,700 cfm throughout the experiment. Testing variables included spray location, pressure, spacing, orientation, and number. Figure 2 shows the optimized directional spray system, also called the auger clearer spray system. The system consists of three sprays mounted alone the intake side of the miner. Sprays arc spaced 16 to 24 inches apart, and angled 30° toward the return side of the miner. The 24-inch spacing moved about 7% more air across the face than the 16-inch spacing; however, it resulted in some additional misting on the return side of the miner. A 30° orientation was more effective than a 60° orientation for moving air across the face and minimizing misting on the return side of the miner. Flat fan sprays arc used because their spray paths arc not obstructed by the top of the miner and mine roof, A 50° fan angle is used to minimize misting on the intake side of the miner.

Reduce spillage hazards and contamination when adding hydraulic nil to mining machine reservoirs. Approach An easily transported module, that delivers hydraulic oil directly into mining machines, was built and tested. How It Works The Hydraulic Oil Delivery Module is carried, from the oil storage area to the equipment needing oil, in the bucket of a scoop or other utility vehicle. Oil is pumped into the module reservoir from storage, or out of the module reservoir into the machine being serviced, through a long hydraulic hose. During long-term testing, the 115 foot long delivery hose made it possible to replenish the hydraulic oil in mining machines at the face with only limited interruption to the mining operation. (Figure 1 shows one! version of the module.) The compact Hydraulic, Oil Delivery Module consists of: an oil reservoir: a pump driven by a hydraulic motor; two high pressure, low volume oil lines, filters; and a low pressure, larger capacity delivery hose equipped with quick-connect-couplers. The high pressure oil lines are connected to the scoop's hydraulic power takeoff, which supplies the power to pump oil in or out of the module reservoir.

Develop and demonstrate a lightweight material that has low thermal conductivity and that would be suitable for placement using shotcrete methods. This material could be applied in deep, hot mines where mine drifts must be insulated. Its use would decrease mine refrigeration needs and reduce energy costs.

Until man was able to produce light, his working day was pretty much limited to daylight hours. Underground miners have a special problem because in a mine it is just as dark during daytime as it is at night. The first devices used for mine lighting were torches and open flame 011 lamps. Torches made from twisted grass and dipped in tallow or pine pitch would burn for a while, but they made a lot of smoke and probably went out when they were needed most. During the 15001s, miners lamps consisted of a small metal dish with a hook attached to hang it up. The saucer-shaped dish was filled with animal or fish oil and a wick made of twisted fibers was laid In the 011 and hung over one edge where it would burn. This lamp would burn longer than a torch, but the amount of light cast by the pale, flickering flame was probably only a little better than no light at all.

Enhance the critical skill of hazard recognition among miners by providing quality training that can help jot performance and lead to a higher degree of safety in the workplace. Background In mining, as in many other occupations, the safety of the worker depends on his or her ability to recognize hazards in the workplace. Some of the information needed by the miner for recognizing potential areas of danger is available in the form of visual cues found throughout the mine. One aspect of the dynamic mine environment it which the task of hazard recognition is critical for al workers is that of ground control. Regardless of job responsibilities, every worker is continuously exposed to roof rib, and floor hazards. Fatality injury data for the "underground coal" segment of the mining industry continue to show that about half of all fatalities are due to falls of ground each year. It is hypothesized that some of these accident, can be prevented if miners are better able to recognize visual cues that forewarn of potential roof and rib problems.

"The recent discovery and exploitation of petroleum territory have resulted in the enactment of new petroleum laws in most of the South American Republics. The activities in the discovery of these new fields were engendered by the knowledge of the fact that present producing fields must within well defined periods be exhausted. Oil operators were willing to take the initial steps in exploitation in the absence of legislation that applied strictly to petroleum operations. The enactment of modern legislation in many of these Republics encouraging and protecting exploitations may cause tremendous oil activities in these countries, and the results may be comparable with the magnitude of the undertakings and the prestige of the companies now entering this territory.These, oil fields are admirably located for convenient distribution of petroleum by water to all the Nations using oil as fuel for shipping and industrial concerns. The oil markets of the western coast of South America will derive immense benefits from the Panama Canal. This navigation route brings these markets into direct ocean shipment with the Atlantic coasts of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.One deterrent to oil production in the Republics of South America is the want of inland. transportation facilities, but the recent laws of these Republics without exception provide for acquiring rights of way for pipe lines and other modes of transportation; and doubtless the great interests and. syndicates already operating in these regions will, as production increases, provide ample pipe line transportation sufficient to convey to the coast the oil produced. It way be assumed, from the legal guarantees afforded, and from operating equipment and machinery that are now being concentrated that refineries will be erected at shipping points for the purpose of making these petroleum products accessible to the world."

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

The added hazards to mining incident to oil and gas wells penetrating the coal measures in proximity to mine workings , have long been recognized in those fields where the extraction of oil , gas , and coal , has been in progress for a number of years . The history of these fields is replete with stories of serious mine fires , explosions , and miraculous escapes from both fires and explosions due to either oil or gas finding its way into the mine workings through the strata , or by mining into an unknown or uncharted and abandoned oil or gas well that had not been properly plugged . The Director of the Bureau of Mines , in response to numerous requests from coal operators and oil and gas operators , called a meeting in 1913 to discuss necessary precationary measures to take when drilling oil or gas wells through workable coal beds and to try , if possible . to formulate a set of regulations that might serve as a guide to those persons preparing regulations covering the drilling of oil and gas wells in the various coal producing States . This meeting was attended by representatives of the coal , oil , and gas industries , State geologists , State mine inspectors , and representatives of the Bureau of Mines . A committee was appointed to prepare a set of regulations , which was later published as U.S.Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 53 ; the discussions and results of the meeting werepublished as U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 65 . Later , the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appointed a committee to draft a model law for the use of the legislature of any State concerned . This committee made its report on April 27 , 1928 . Several of the coal mining States now have more or less comprehensive regulations governing the drilling of oil or gas wells through workable coal beds , others have regulations that are inadequate , while some have no regulations . The State of West Virginia recently enacted a law containing reg lations which are the result of a comprehensive and careful study of the problem .

Develop technology that can reduce the dust exposure of a mine worker at the tailgate end of the longwall face by providing him with a clean split of air. Approach Use the jet spray air mover (JSAM) developed under a Bureau of Mines contract (refer to Technology News No. 117 for details on the development), to clean a small portion of the face air and to discharge the clean air behind a brattice partition. How It Works At most longwalls, air flows along the face from head-to-tail. Most of the airborne respirable dust generated along the face during mining is transported to the tailgate with the airflow. Any miner required to work at the tailgate is exposed to this dust. The only practical means of removing airborne respirable dust is with a scrubber. Simplicity and size made the JSAM the best choice for cleaning a portion of the tailgate air. The scrubber has no moving parts and is operated by water at low flow rates (<10 gpm) and fairly high pressures (250-500 psig). Many longwalls have sufficient water systems to supply the JSAM with adequate water pressures and flow rates. Also, the JSAM&apos;s size (4&apos;x 2&apos;x 1&apos;) allows it to be hung on one of the tailgate&apos;s shields or at some other convenient location. A clean split can be maintained at the tailgate by discharging the cleaned air behind a brattice partition at the work area. This should effectively seal off the clean air from the dusty air and provide the tailgate worker with a less dusty work environment.

To improve a miner&apos;s chance of survival during an emergency by providing immediately avail-able breathable air and protection from toxic gases until a longer-duration breathing apparatus, stored nearby, can be reached. Approach: A belt-carried apparatus which can provide a closed-circuit atmosphere for ten minutes breathing has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. How It Works: Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the user&apos;s exhaled breath are removed, and oxygen is supplied, by chemical reactions. When the user exhales into the mouthpiece, water vapor in his breath reacts with potassium superoxide (KO2) stored In the canister to produce oxygen. The other product of this reaction (KOH) reacts with carbon dioxide and removes it from the air. The oxygen-enriched air then flows from the canister into two breathing bags. When user inhales through the mouth, that air is drawn out of the bags, makes a second pass through the chemical-containing canister, and flows into the mouthpiece tube. A nose clip is worn to seal off the nasal passages.

As part of its objective to expand the body of mineral information as a basis for new technology, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on the fundamental behavior exhibited by phosphate clay waste in settling ponds. A semiempirical equation used to describe the compaction of ceramic powders in a single-acting die was applied to aqueous phosphatic clay waste and attapulgite slurries. This equation, [*V = a1 e ?k1/P + a2e ? k2/P] was found to describe the compaction of an attapulgite gel and a phosphate slime gel by a moving screen. [*V] is the ratio of the compaction achieved at a given pressure, P, to the compaction achieved at a pres-sure sufficient to remove all space between particles. The constant al represents the fraction of compaction achieved at low pressure by rearrangement of floes to higher packing density, and a2 represents the fraction of compaction achieved at higher pressure resulting from removal of voids within floes. K1 and K2 are constants determined from the experimental data. Both the low-pressure and high-pressure compaction mechanisms were observed in the compaction of the clays. These two compaction mechanisms offer an explanation for the observation that impounded slimes initially dewater rapidly and then dewater at a much slower rate.

Optimum autoclaving conditions were determined for separation of iron and manganese values from pregnant leach liquor produced in extracting manganese from low-grade umber are. The umber was leached with a synthetic anolyte similar to a recycle solution, used in manganese electrolysis cell operations, that had been renewed with ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid. The equipment used and results obtained are presented for the several conditions employed. The kinetics of the separation were studied. Rate equations were derived for the formation of solid ammonium-manganese sulfate, (NH4)2 Mn2 (S04)3.

Three coals from the Wilkes on - Carbonado district of Pierce County , Washington , were subjected to washability analyses to estimate the amount and quality of washed coal obtainable . Because the coals were unusually difficult to clean , the washability examinations were supplemented by table tests , tests in dense - medium cleaning units , and flotation tests . None of the coals could be reduced to the desired 10 percent ash by tabling and the response to flotation by two of them was poor . Dense -medium treatment provided coal of the desired quality , but with the most difficult coal the recovery efficiency was lower than usual .

Approach Install a new pallet loading dust control system which uses a push-pull ventilation technique along with a hydraulic lift table to control the pallet loading height throughout the entire loading cycle. How It Works A low-volume, high-velocity blower system operating at approximately at 120 cfm blows a stream of air over the top layer of bags on the pallet. The blower system is composed of two 3-inch air jets (approximately 1,200-ft/min velocity) directed toward an exhaust system on the opposite side of the pallet. As these air jets travel across the pallet, they en-train dust generated during bag stacking. The dust laden air is then captured by the exhaust ventilation system which draws approximately 2,500 cfm through an exhaust hood on the opposite side of the pallet.

"A gratifying decrease is noticeable in the number of men killed in the coal minas of the United States during the past six months as compared to the quantity of coal produced.During July last year, when 221 men lost their lives, the production of coal was over 50 million tons. In January, 1920, the production had increased to 56 million tons, or 11 per cent, while the fatalities, instead of increasing proportionately, actually decreased to 166, or nearly 15 per cent. Nor is this decrease a mere accident or coincidence peculiar to the month of January, as may be seen from the following table.From the figures shown above it may be observed that the average monthly production for January and the five months immediately preceding, was 49,500,000, or only 2 per cent below that for July, while the average number of men killed was 183, or a decrease of over 17 per cent."

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4).
