A continuous-monitoring system has been developed for analyses of mine gas concentrations associated with spontaneous combustion, mine fires, and explosive and toxic levels. The analysis center, which is linked to sample locations by polyethylene tubes in bundles, has been successfully field tested by the Federal Bureau of Mines for analyzing carbon monoxide and oxygen; a computational scheme has been developed to process the data at the site. This report contains information on the design, purchase, installation, and maintenance of the tube-bundle system. A brief comparison of the tube-bundle system with the underground-analysis system and plans for future research are also included.

Provide respiratory protection for escape in a toxic or oxygen-deficient atmosphere with a device small and light enough to be belt-worn. Approach Combine a 10-minute, belt-worn respirator with a stored, larger, long-duration (60-minute) attachment that can be plugged into the 10-minute unit without removing the mouthpiece. How It Works The 10-minute device will be carried by the miner at all times, and the 60-minute canister or attachment will be stored near the miner. In the event of a disaster, the 10-minute device would be donned immediately. The miner would then proceed to the stored 60-minute unit and plug it into the 10-minute unit. For the 10-minute unit, a breathing circuit was developed in which air is passed through the KO2 bed twice per respiration. The U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR), Brookwood, AL, evaluated the use of sheathed explosive charges in breaking up large stones that can jam the feeder¬breaker or pan conveyor on longwalls and halt operations. Use of the sheathed charge reduced the downtime of the longwall panel to 15 to 30 min as compared with the 1 to 2 h required to drill and shoot the stone. Firing the sheathed charge at the face caused no significant damage to Iongwall equipment. Use of the sheathed charge also represented an improvement in safety by eliminating the exposure of miners to the inherent hazards of the face for extended periods of time. Another benefit, which is difficult to quantify, is the elimination of the temptation to shoot mudcaps or adobes, which is illegal in U.S. underground coal mines.

The added hazards to mining incident to oil and gas wells penetrating the coal measures in proximity to mine workings , have long been recognized in those fields where the extraction of oil , gas , and coal , has been in progress for a number of years . The history of these fields is replete with stories of serious mine fires , explosions , and miraculous escapes from both fires and explosions due to either oil or gas finding its way into the mine workings through the strata , or by mining into an unknown or uncharted and abandoned oil or gas well that had not been properly plugged . The Director of the Bureau of Mines , in response to numerous requests from coal operators and oil and gas operators , called a meeting in 1913 to discuss necessary precationary measures to take when drilling oil or gas wells through workable coal beds and to try, if possible . to formulate a set of regulations that might serve as a guide to those persons preparing regulations covering the drilling of oil and gas wells in the various coal producing States . This meeting was attended by representatives of the coal , oil , and gas industries , State geologists , State mine inspectors , and representatives of the Bureau of Mines . A committee was appointed to prepare a set of regulations , which was later published as U.S.Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 53 ; the discussions and results of the meeting werepublished as U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 65 . Later , the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appointed a committee to draft a model law for the use of the legislature of any State concerned . This committee made its report on April 27 , 1928 . Several of the coal mining States now have more or less comprehensive regulations governing the drilling of oil or gas wells through workable coal beds , others have regulations that are inadequate , while some have no regulations . The State of West Virginia recently enacted a law containing reg lations which are the result of a comprehensive and careful study of the problem .

Significant effects of in-the-mill drying on the pulverization of lignite have been demonstrated in an experimental impact-type pulverizer by tests in which the primary variable was temperature of the sweeping gas. Reduced power requirements and increased product fineness were observed as the extent of drying was increased. Pulverization with in-the-mill drying was studied in comparative tests made on lignites from five mine sources. All of the lignites responded in a similar manner; however, differences in the pulverizing characteristics of the individual lignites were significant. For one lignite, the electrical input to the pulverizer driving motor with minimum sweeping-gas temperature was 33.9 kw.-hr. per ton, decreasing to 14.0 kw.-hr. per ton with a sweeping-gas temperature of 658° F.; for another lignite, at comparable operating conditions, the electrical input decreased from 59.1 to 19.0 kw.-hr. per ton. In the first case, the product fineness increased with increasing temperature of sweeping gas from 65.2 to 79.2 percent through a 200-mesh sieve, and in the second case, from b2.7 to 86.9 percent through a 200-mesh sieve.

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

A mathematical modeling method was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for the prediction of the principal equilibrium species in the solvent extraction of nickel. Models were developed for the extraction of nickel from ammoniacal sulfate and carbonate solutions with commercial oxime extractants. Independent variables in the research were nickel concentration, ionic strength, pH of the initial aqueous phase, and extract ants and their concentrations in the organic phase. Results from laboratory shakeout tests compared fairly well with predictions of the equilibrium concentrations of nickel and pH values. For example, the loading of nickel onto the extractant was predicted on average within ±27 pct of the measured values, and the pH to within ± 0.17 pH unit.

To monitor the quantity and quality of air in underground mines to assure safe working conditions. Approach Several mine air monitoring systems, consisting of sensing stations in the return airways and control stations on the surface, have been Installed and tested. How It Works Sensor stations are located at strategic places in the underground mine. At each station, the sensors measure air velocity, air temperature, methane concentration, and carbon monoxide concentration. In one system, differential air pressure between intake air and return air, is also measured. Output voltages of the sensors are converted to digital signals at the sensor stat ion; these signals are multiplexed so that data from all sensors can be trans-phone wire to a central station. There the data are displayed and alarms are triggered when the sensed values exceed (or in the case of air velocity, fall below) a preset value. In addition to receiving data automatically, the central station can poll individual sensors at any time.

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. Lower the respirable dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping the dust cloud confined to the face. Approach Change the location of face-side machine cooling, water sprays. How It Works The dust breathed by the longwall shearer operator is usually produced by the shearer itself. The dust cloud originates at the face, and the exposure of the operator depends largely on how quickly this cloud spreads into the walkway. Water sprays on the shearer body can have a large effect on dust cloud spreading. Results to date indicate that sprays can help confine the dust cloud to the face if they are carefully placed. Otherwise they can make dust levels far worse. The worst offenders are often face-side sprays used to discharge cooling water from the cooling jackets of the shearer motors. These face-side sprays set up an air circulation pattern as illustrated in the drawing. Air induced by the sprays to flow towards the face, raises the air pressure in front of the face, which causes the air flow to turn and then move back over the shearer, bringing dust with it into the walkway.

Objective As mines become safer and disasters fewer, a time may come when no employees in the mining industry have any practical experience in managing a mine emergency. To fill an emerging gap in mine emergency response training, a multidisciplinary team of researchers and computer programmers from the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has developed an intervention for mining personnel who would be in leadership positions in the command center during emergencies. It is called MERITS, a computer-based emergency simulation exercise. MERITS is short for "Mine Emergency Response Interactive Training Simulation." It provides trainees an opportunity to gain command center experience during a simulated underground coal mine emergency. MERITS allows trainees to practice information gathering, situation assessment, decision-making, and coordination skills without risk to personnel or property. Individuals representing mine emergency response personnel, various State safety officials, and private mine management from three States have participated in MERITS training. What Is MERITS? MERITS is an extension of previous work that compiled a knowledge base relevant to mine disaster management via interviews, analysis of literature, reviews of past events, and observations of mock mine disasters. Findings from prior research found a need for an alternative method of command center training. This new computer simulation is being used to train emergency command center personnel to effectively manage an underground mine fire. Modeled after training simulations developed for other industries (e.g., to address nuclear accidents, chemical spills, evacuations, etc.), MERITS simulates underground and surface events related to the disaster. It exposes the user to events that typically occur during a mine emergency, such as lack of information and miscommunication. It also presents trainees with issues that must be addressed, such as making provisions for briefing news media and victims' families, ordering needed supplies, interfacing with Government enforcement agencies, and housing mine rescue teams. The outcome of the scenario is determined by the users' decisions and their emergency response plans. Field Results Field testing of MERITS was conducted with eight full-day training sessions at four different locations in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. These field tests benefited from the knowledge and experience of State of Pennsylvania inspection officials, representatives of the United Mine Workers of America(UMWA), and private mine management who served as trainees for the MERITS training sessions. Trainees self-reported an average of20 years of work experience in the mining industry. All trainees had participated in Mine Emergency Response Development (MERD) training exercises, and many had been involved in real mine emergencies. Trainee evaluation of the MERITS program is summarized below: •Twenty-six of the 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them know how to prepare for a real emergency. •Twenty-five of the 27 trainees believed that the storyline for the MERITS simulation was either "very realistic" or "realistic." •All 27 trainees believed that the MERITS simulation helped them learn how to better handle a real emergency. •None of the 27 trainees stated that they were bored during the simulation. After the initial field tests, MERITS was refined and retested during training sessions for individuals from State agencies, the UMWA, and private industry. Mining personnel from underground coal and underground stone mines participated and responded positively to the learning experience. To produce industrial-grade titanium castings by processes that are nonpolluting and lower cost than the currently used rammed-graphite process. Approach Foundry-grade zircon and olivine sands, bonded by waterglass or bentonite, are used to make shell or rammed molds which require relatively low-drying temperatures and do not generate noxious fumes during drying or casting. Procedures Three separate processes have been developed which meet the stated pollution and cost goals. These are: 1. Waterglass-bonded rammed zircon or olivine sand molds are dried at 480°F, zirconia washed, redried, and used in an inductoslag or skull-casting furnace. 2. Waterglass-bonded zircon or olivine sand shell molds are formed at 560°F, cured at 620°F, zirconia washed, dried at 480°F. and used in an inductoslag furnace. 3. Rammed zircon and olivine sand molds are bonded with western bentonite, zirconia washed, dried at 980°F, and used in an inductoslag or skull-casting furnace.

THERE are two recognized methods of recording the state of the metallurgical art. One involves delineation of individual advances reported in the literature. This approach is used effectively in the excellent annual reviews published by some of the leading technical journals and in the technology sections of the individual commodity chapters in this volume. In an effort to more clearly indicate the current trend of metallurgical research and development, the authors of this chapter chose the method of discussing generally selected items of interest brought to their attention during 1959. Since technology cannot be confined by dates on a calendar, most of the items mentioned have been in the process of development for several years. No attempt was made to identify the sources of information used here. Material was drawn from many sources : Nonconfidential correspondence and conversations with authorities of the metallurgical fraternity, papers delivered at technical meetings, and articles noted in the technical press, including particularly Engineering and Mining Journal, Metal Progress, Journal of Metals, Mining Engineering, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Chemical and Engineering News, Chemical Week, Materials in Design Engineering, Review of Metal Literature, the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Bulletin, the Mining Journal (British), and the Journal of the Institute of Metals (British).

"INTRODUCTION The Big Four fault and the Sandy Creek fault, with several cross faults, traverse the Stalion-Curnel fluorspar prospect in a northeasterly direction. The Big Four mine, about three-quarters of a mile northeast of the prospect, is the only active mine in the immediate area.A resistivity survey was made of a portion of the prospect by the Division of Geophysical Exploration, Bureau of Mines, in May and June 1946. As a result of this survey, five holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period from October 8 to December 16, 1946. Two Longyear No. 12 Junior Straitline diamond drills were used for the work.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Often a collection of analytical data, which should reasonably be expected to follow the normal distribution, contains too many extreme values, which the experimenter is inclined to eliminate according to some arbitrary procedure. The stepwise computer procedure described for this purpose is similar to many other truncation procedures; however, because truncation of a basically normal distribution causes a downward bias in the estimated variance, this procedure provides a graphical method to compensate for the bias.

The Bureau of Mines and Kaiser Steel Corp. are cooperatively demonstrating the shield-type roof support in the longwall mining of a 10-1/2-foot-thick coalbed at the York Canyon mine near Raton, N. Mex. As part of the demonstration, the shield supports have been successfully and safely moved from a completed longwall face to a new longwall face. When these shield supports were moved in 1976 they were the largest and heaviest longwall support system in use in U.S. coal mines. The shield supports, preparations for moving them, the actual move, and installation at the new face are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to improve the flotation response of coals that are difficult to wash by froth flotation. A literature survey and experimentation showed that, for the most part, refractory coals can be floated with oily collectors and frothers. Collector reagent consumption can be minimized and the selectivity of the flotation enhanced by assuring adequate, but not prolonged, reagent conditioning. Where flotation selectivity is especially poor, two-stage rougher-cleaner flotation is recommended. It was concluded that a major problem with refractory coals is predicting when they will appear in a flotation circuit so that supplementary flotation collectors can be added. Coal losses due to variation in the floatability of the feed might be reduced if a nonpolar collector such as kerosine or fuel oil is used along with a frother as general coal flotation practice.

QUARTZ CRYSTAL Cultured quartz crystal production increased significantly in 198?, following 2 years of reduced production. Consumption of domestic lascas as feedstock for cultured quartz crystal increased. Imports of lascas from Brazil also increased. Although no lascas was mined in the United States during the year, the domestic producer supplied material to consumers from company stockpiles. Specimen-quality natural quartz was very much in demand; quartz crystal for this application is discussed in the Gem Stone chapter.
