"I. INTRODUCTION(SILICA, THE LUNG, INFLAMMATION, AND FIBROSIS)Inhalation of respirable-size silica (0. I to 5 µm in diameter) deposits the particles in the deep spaces of the Jung where oxygen is exchanged. The resulting pattern of inflammation is substantially different compared to that observed from other inhaled substances such as carbon, polystyrene titanium dioxide etc. 1 Following the inflammatory reaction the body attempts to isolate the damage by walling off the area via fibrosis. 2 The unique nature of the inflammatory response to silica makes it logical to infer that fibrosis is a later-stage manifestation of the initial inflammatory damage. In addition to the inflammation extensive lysis and cellular death particularly to macrophages and neutrophils, can occur, depending on the dose of silica.' The ingestion of significant amounts of silica by macrophages and neutrophils produces an inflammatory sequence which activates the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism and produces platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotrienes (LT).4·5II. CALCIUM IONOPHORE MIMICS SILICA TOXICITY IN VITROPhagocytic cells exposed to silica in vitro produce PAF and LT. This response is reminiscent of phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore (A23 l 87) in the presence of ionic calcium.6-8 A23 l 87 forms a complex with free ionic calcium which passes through cellular membranes, thus transporting calcium inside the cell. The increased intracellular calcium concentration triggers the production of small amounts of prostaglandins large amounts of LT. PAF and. depending on dose cellular death (see Figure 1 ). Could silica cause LT production and cellular death by a similar mechanism? How could silica - an inert solid - act in a similar fashion as a soluble stimulant? Clearly the negative SiO2 and OH- surface of silica can bind calcium ions9 and therefore could theoretically act as a solid-state ionophore releasing bound calcium inside of cells following phagocytosis."

The vapor pressures of liquid columbium and liquid hafnium were deter-mined by the Langmuir free evaporation method as a part of the Bureau of Mines program on the study of transition metals. An electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible was used for melting. Temperature was measured with a two-color ratio pyrometer. Least-squares analyses of the vapor pres-sure data gave the following equations: [Logp (atm) = 5 .429 -31,310 T] for liquid columbium in the range 2,740° - 3,140° K, and [Log p (atm) = 5,690 28 T] for liquid zirconium in the range 2,500° -2,810° K. Third-law evaluations of each data set gave mean heats of sublimation (298.15° K) of 175.1±3.2 kcal/mole and 148.3±1.2 kcal/mole for columbium and hafnium, respectively. Second-law standard heats of sublimation determined from sigma plots and from sigma-prime plots agreed fairly well with the third-law values. The sigma-prime plots gave standard entropies of sublimation of 30.96±0.84 eu and 33.S6±0.44 eu for columbium and hafnium, respectively.

During the recent study of lubricating oils carried on in the San Francisco laboratory of the United States Bureau of Mines, it became desirable to distill the oils used in the experimental work at pressures as low as 10 millimeters (mercury column) absolute. In the effort to Overcome difficulties and eliminate sources of error, certain changes were made in the apparatus for vacuum distillation used by the Bureau of Mines for crude petroleum.4 These changes were described in R.I. 2819, issued in July, 1927. Subsequent to the publication of R.I. 2819 several other changes have been made, and the present form of the apparatus for vacuum distillation of lubricating oils is described in this revision of R.I. 2819. These changes were found to give more accurate checks on duplicate distillations. The major part of the credit for the laboratory work which developed the changes in the apparatus and method revised herein is due to Boyd Guthrie, assistant petroleum chemist, and R. V. Higgins, junior chemist, o the San Francisco laboratory, United States Bureau of Mines. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The distilling flask employed is essentially the Hempel flask as used by the United States Bureau of Mines for the analytical distillation of petroleum.5 he complete apparatus is shown in Figure 1. The fractionating column and exposed portion of the flask is wrapped with 4 inch asbestos rope and then surrounded by a cylindrical hood of 1/8 inch pliable asbestos sheet with a narrow air space between the wrapping and the cylindrical hood. This was found necessary to prevent any radiation or convection heat losses from the column, and resulted in obtaining a more even and constant fractionation by eliminating any dephlegmating action caused by temperature changes around the column.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop substitute or improved performance refractory materials for metallurgical applications, the Tuscaloosa Research Center has evaluated the effect of additives on sintering and strength properties of aialon (silicon aluminum oxynitride) compositions fabricated by a conventional powder metallurgy technique. Additions of Y203, Gd203, CeO2, MgO, ZrO2, ZrSiO4, and MgA12O4 to a sialon composition containing 70 pct ß-Si3N4 + 30 pct a-A1203 increased sintered densities by as much as 50 pct over densities of undoped material. The studies also indicated that sintered densities reached a maximum between 20 and 30 mole-pct a-A1203 when a series of sialon compositions of a-Si3N4, having 6.7 to 57.9 pet a-Al203, were doped with Y203, Gd2O3, and MgO. In studies to establish the effect of the crystalline phase of the silicon nitride and alumina used, tests were made using a- and ß-Si3N4 and a- and ?-A12 03 as starting materials. The tests indicated that when using an addition of 5 wt-pct Y203, best results were obtained with a sialon composed of 74.4 mole-pct a-Si304 and 25.6 mole-pct ?-A1203. In other tests made with this sialon composition MOR values of 28,120 and 29,500 psi at 25° C, and 23,520 and 16,850 psi at 1,400° C, were obtained when doping with 5 wt-pct ZrSiO4 and ZrO2, respectively.

"The generation of free radicals from reactions of nickel (Il)-thiol complexes with molecular oxygen and model lipid hydroperoxides was investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) utilizing 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap. Incubation of nickel (II) [Ni(II)) with cysteine in an aerobic environment generated hydroxyl (·OH) radical, which then reacted with cysteine to generate a carbon-centered alkyl ( · R) radical. Radical generation was inhibited under a nitrogen atmosphere. Model lipid hydroperoxides, cumene hydroperoxide, and I-butyl hydroperoxide enhanced the yield of these radicals and also generated an alkoxyl (·OR) radical. Radical yield decreased by approximately half under a nitrogen atmosphere. Although histidine did not cause radical formation in the reaction between Ni(II) and cumene hydroperoxide under aerobic conditions, the addition of histidine to a mixture containing Ni(ll), cysteine, and cumene hydroperoxide under the same experimental conditions increased the yield of · R radical but lowered the yield of ·OR and ·OH radical adducts. It thus appears that histidine caused the ·OH attack to be more site-specific. Similar results were obtained utilizing 1-butyl hydroperoxide. Penicillamine or N-acetylcysteine yielded similar results except that under aerobic conditions, reaction between Ni(ll) and N-acetylcysteine without hydroperoxide did not generate a significant concentration of free radicals. Under the same experimental conditions, cystine did not generate any detectable free radicals, suggesting an important role of the -SH group in Ni(II)-mediated free radical generation. The results indicate that free radical generation from the reaction of Ni(Il)-thiol complexes and molecular oxygen, and/or lipid hydroperoxides, may play an important role in the mechanism(s) of Ni(II) toxicity and carcinogenesis. INTRODUCTIONWhile nickel is a well-recognized carcinogen [l, 2]. the underlying biochemical mechanisms remain unclear (3, 4). Recent studies suggest that these mechanisms may involve oxidative DNA damage through free radicals, especially the hydroxyl (•OH) radical [5-13]. The mechanisms of nickel carcinogenicity and toxicity may also involve lipid peroxidation [14-21]. Unlike ferrous ion [Fe(II)], the Ni(II) cation itself does not directly react with 02, H2O2, or lipid hydroperoxides to generate free radicals [12, 21]. However, it has been reported that Ni(II) complexes with certain synthetic oligopeptides, e.g., tetraglycine or glycylglycylhistidine, make Ni(II) reactive with 02. This reaction results in transitory formation of Ni(III) and degradation of the organic ligand via free radical reactions [22]. Such Ni(II)-peptide complexes are also capable of reacting with H2O2 to produce oxygen free radicals [11, 12]. Although the cellular environ¬ment may not contain these particular peptide ligands that are known to render Ni(II) redox active in vitro, it does contain a variety of oligopeptides that are capable of forming Ni(II) complexes at physiological pH, and thus may facilitate Ni(II) redox activity in vivo. These oligopeptides include glutathione (y-L glutamylycysteinylglycine), carnosine (homocarnosine (y aminobutyryl-L-histidine), and anserine ( B-alany1-3-methyl-L-histidine)."

A series of four coal combustion experiments (I)' was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in the Safety Research Coal Mine to evaluate the response of optical and ionization smoke and CO sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. With the increased utilization of diesel engines in underground coal mines, it is important to be able to discriminate fire products-of-combustion (POC) from diesel emissions. One proposed method to accomplish this is the deployment and interpretation of multiple sensors.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI)· by NAD(P)H. Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O 2) to NAD(P)H-Cr(VI) reaction mixtures suppresses the Cr(V) signal and generates hydroxyl (·OH) radicals (as detected via spin trapping), suggesting that Cr(V) reacts with H2O 2 to generate the ·OH radicals. Reaction between H2O 2 and a Cr(V)·glutathione complex, and between H2O 2 and several Cr(V)-carboxylato complexes also produces ·OH radicals. These results suggest that Cr(V) complexes catalyze the generation of ·OH radicals from H2O 2, and that ·OH radicals might play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) cytotoxicity. KEY WORDS: ESR. spin trapping, Cr(VI) reduction, Cr(V), hydrogen peroxide, free radicals.INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports an ESR spin trapping detection of hydroxyl ( OH) radicals.in reactions between some Cr(V) complexes containing biologically important ligands and hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2 ). This work was undertaken because while the reduction of Cr(VI) to lower oxidation states has been suggested as a key step in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity, the reaction· mechanism is not yet clear. 1 Mutagencity has been well documented for Cr(VI) via various bacterial assays, while Cr(III) has been shown not to be mutagenic.2 • 3 Since it has been reported that compounds containing Cr(VI) do not react with isolated DNA,4 the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular constituents has been thought to be important in the mechanism of Cr(VI) induced DNA alteration.1·4 • 5 For cellular systems earlier studies include those on the reduction of C~(VI) by microsomes,6-8 rat liver DT-diaphorase,9 and aldehyde oxidase. 10 Regarding the reduction mechanism, Jennette used ESR spectroscopy to show that a long-lived Cr(V) complex is formed as an intermediate in the microsomal reduction of Cr(VI) in the presence of NADPH.8 She postulated that Cr(V) is the ""ultimate"" carcinogenic form of chromium compounds. This conclusion has led to many further investigations of the formation of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions.11 - 19 More recently, however, it has been suggested that oxygen-derived radicals generated during the Cr(VI) reduction are the species responsible for the DNA alteration.20.2• To the best of our knowledge, however, no information is available on the generation of such radicals in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions, except some preliminary results on the glutathionyl (GS·) radical formation in the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH). 11 - 19 We, therefore, undertook a systematic investigation of the reaction of Cr(VI) with NAD(P)H, GSH, ix-hydroxycarboxylic acids, and H2O 2 • NADPH was chosen as a model reductant because of its ubiquitous existence inside the cells, its critical role in the enzymatic Cr(VI) reduction,1·6-9 its representation of important cellular Cr(VI) reductants, and its ability to reduce other metal ions.22 GSH was chosen as another model Cr(VI) reductant because GSH also exists inside cells, it represents another important category of cellular Cr(VI) reductants, the thiols, and it also plays an important role in the Cr(VI) toxicity .1• 1 ""- 19.i3.i4 For further clarification, we also studied the reaction of Cr(VI) with several '1'.-hydroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of H2O 2 since these acids are definitively known to reduce Cr(VJ) to form stable, isolable Cr(V).25 .2 6 The results obtained indicate that Cr(V) complexes, produced in the reduction of Cr(VJ) by cellular reductants, react with H2 O 2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might be the initiators of primary events in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity."

Utilization of belt air in underground coal mines has been discussed extensively during the last decade. The Final Report of the Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining formed by the Miner Act of 2006 recommends research on leakage, use of booster fans, and escapeway safety. This paper discusses the role of ventilation modeling in evaluating primary escapeway pressurization in a three-entry development system to improve emergency escape in a coal mine using belt air. The intake entry of the NIOSH Bruceton Experimental Mine was pressurized using a 1.1 m (42 in) diameter, 37 kW (50 hp) fan. The work details air movement in the simulated three-entry system and the resulting leakage patterns. Three mine ventilation software packages were compared to analyze their performance in predicting the airflows and leakage conditions with different fan settings. NIOSH researchers found that the measurement results correlated well with the results of modeling.

This report describes in detail the circuitry used in the Automated Time Domain Reflectometry System and the testing and modification done to the system to improve the units performance and consistency. The analog ATDR software is described and explained in detail. Also attempts to implement the same Assembly Language program in a higher level language (PLM) are documented along `h two versions of the PLM program - one which uses a data filtering approach to limit noise and another which uses data averaging to reduce noise. The field testing of the analog and digital ATDR units is described along with the hardware modifications that resulted. The analog unit has been abandoned and the digital unit adopted for most field tests. Tests indicate that the digital units are much more consistent and less confusing for the lay-person to operate. The results indicate that the it can locate an abnormality in a test cable to within 5% of the true location (provided the cable phase velocity is known). The units can consistently locate shunt type faults which are less than 300 ohms and series type faults which are greater than 30 ohms.

This study was conducted as part of a project involving the evaluation of a new type of noise exposure monitoring paradigm. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess how “nonstandard” dosimeter microphones and microphone po­sitions measured noise levels under different acoustical condi­tions (i.e., diffuse ?eld and direct ?eld). The data presented in this article re?ect measurement differences due to microphone position and mounting/supporting structure only and are not an evaluation of any particular complete dosimeter system. To varying degrees, the results obtained with the dosimeter microphones used in this study differed from the reference results obtained in the unperturbed (subject absent) sound ?eld with a precision (suitable for use in an ANSI Type 1 sound level meter) 1/2 -inch (12.7 mm) measurement microphone. Effects of dosimeter microphone placement in a diffuse ?eld were found to be minor for most of the test microphones/locations, while direct ?eld microphone placement effects were found to be quite large depending on the microphone position and supporting structure, sound source location, and noise spectrum.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. Deep cover retreat mining (overburden in excess of 750 ft) is an important emerging issue which will intensify in the future as the more easily mined shallow seam reserves are depleted. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) statistics indicates that deep cover pillar recovery accounts for a disproportionate share of the underground coal mine roof/rib fall fatalities and injuries. Past research has shown that previously recommended Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) stability factors (SF’s) may be excessive for deep cover pillar design. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the various methods and strategies by which panels, production pillars and barrier pillars are developed and extracted under deep cover, and to develop appropriate design guidelines. In the course of the research, 29 mines in 7 states were investigated to collect panel design case histories. At each mine site, underground geotechnical data were collected on the pillar line in order to document roof rock, coalbed and floor conditions. The analyses indicated that squeezes were the most likely failure mode where the depth was less than 1,250 ft, but bumps predominated in the deeper cover cases. Immediate roof rock quality, the ARMPS SF’s, and barrier pillar stability factors were all found to be important parameters in determining the outcomes of the case histories. Design guidelines, including suggestions for barrier pillars to isolate active panels from nearby gobs in bump prone ground, are also proposed.

Direct costs such as medical, legal, administrative, and worker’s compensation costs, property damage, lost earnings, and lost benefits are typically used to compute the economic impacts of occupational injuries. However, there are also a number of less obvious, indirect costs that substantially contribute to the overall loss costs. In fact, for every $1 of direct costs an estimated $3 to $5 of indirect costs are also incurred. This paper presents a systems approach that incorporates engineering, economics, psychology, and sociology in order to evaluate the total value of investments in safety. By studying the interrelated system comprised of the injured worker, their family and coworkers, as well as the organizational structure that was the setting for the incident, a methodology can be developed that will more accurately capture the true costs of mine injuries.

The final objective of a mine ventilation project is to find a way of supplying the working faces with the necessary quantity of air to dilute all the possible air contaminants to safe limits and to maintain the temperature, humidity and oxygen content within desirable limits. To accomplish the aforesaid, decisions have to be made at early stages of planning and design of a mining operation. That is, ventilation and mine planning are closely related and interdependent, and experience has proved that improvisation as related to mine environment is rarely optimal in ventilation engineering. Mine management should be concerned with two general aspects of ventilation problems. The first is related to the statuatory requirements which are usually the minimum standards that have to be maintained. During the last two decades, mining laws have become increasingly stringent and management of operating mines had to face the effects of these externalities. In some cases these required either a production rate reduction or additional mine development. The second aspect that management should not overlook is the technical and economical importance of mine ventilation on the overall mining cost. In coal mining it is necessary to move, on an average, five tons of air through the mine for each ton of coal produced. The power cost incurred is perhaps the single most important direct cost assigned to ventilation but it is not the only one. Other costs that should be considered include the supervisory labor cost, fan depreciation and maintenance, doors, stoppings and regulators construction cost and maintenance, the additional mine airways development and maintenance because of ventilation requirements. The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of lead and zinc from 104 domestic mines and deposits. Fourteen primary lead and fifty-three primary zinc operations with in situ demonstrated resources containing 27.3 million metric tons (t) of lead and 53 million t of zinc were subsequently evaluated. Potentially 17.5 million t of lead and 2.4 million t of byproduct zinc could be recovered from 14 primary lead operations. Economic evaluations performed in constant January 1982 dollars determined a long-run total cost per pound of recoverable commodity. Including a 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), 59 pct of primary lead was potentially available at or below $0.32 per pound of lead. Potentially 40 million t of zinc and 5.6 million t of byproduct lead could be recovered from 53 primary zinc operations. Ninety percent of the recoverable zinc is potentially available from currently nonproducing mines and deposits, and a weighted average of their long-run total costs was determined at $0.98 per pound of zinc. At a breakeven (0-pct) DCFROR, these non producing operations had a weighted average long-run total cost of $0.58 per pound of zinc. Sensitivity analyses illustrated that operations that recover byproducts were most sensitive to fluctuating metal prices, producing operations were more sensitive to increased smelter treatment charges, and nonproducing operations were impacted most by the DCFROR.

"INTRODUCTION The future of oil production in the part of the Appalachian region included in southwestern Pennsylvania; West Virginia, and southeastern Ohio is directly dependent on the maintenance of existing wells. This report presents an analytical study of the methods used in oil-well reconditioning in this area. The study is part of a research program designed to evaluate those means of stimulating oil production that can effectively and economically maintain present oil-production rates and make it possible to keep existing wells in operation. Well-reconditioning work was curtailed during the war; therefore, an abnormally large number of wells in the Appalachian Region is now in need of repair. Because the lubricant content of Appalachian crude: oils is high and the refined lubricating oils an; particularly suited to use in high speed, high-temperature engines, the demand for these crude oils during the war exceeds, the maximum rate of production obtainable under wartime operating conditions. Increases in operating, expenses, inability to meet war-time reconditioning costs, and inflexible price structures caused the abandonment of an alarming number of wells during the past 4 or 5 years.As a means of increasing regional oil-production rates, new drilling in the older fields for primary production generally is uneconomical because reservoir pressures in most of the fields have virtually been depleted and the production rates of newly drilled wells are small."

A study of the flotation characteristics of columbium-tantalum minerals was made by contact-angle and microflotation methods, and the findings were confirmed by flotation of two natural ores. In the contact-angle study conditions for collection of columbite, pyrochlore, and tantalite were determined for (1) sodium oleate with a sulfonate; (2) sodium isooctyl phosphate; (3) a short-chain primary amine; (4) a long-chain primary amine; and (5) a quaternary amine.
