This report describes the design, and development work performed to reduce the volume and weight of the miners caplamp battery, as well as a headpiece with a swivel mechanism containing a halogen bulb with two filaments. Work was also conducted in the development of a maintenance free battery. The design concept is based on non-sintered Ni-Cd technology, with an energy density of 22 Wh/lb. The cap lamp system developed has been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and can be manufactured for mine use.

This report presents the factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines during diamond-drilling investigation of the Sunset copper deposit in the Index mining district, Snohomish County, Wash. The Sunset mine, first produced copper ore in 1902, but its main period of activity was from 1923 through 1930, The mine has produced 263,500 tons of ore, from which 1,500 ounces of gold, 156,000 ounces of silver, and 12,912,000 bounds of copper-were recovered. "The demand for barite has increased greatly in the last 10 years, especially during World War II. Depletion of oil reserves and subsequent increase in deep drilling created a heavy demand by the oil industry for barite to be used as drilling mud. The great increase in demand for barite gave impetus to the development of a, deposit of impure barite near, Magnet Cove in Hot Spring County, Ark.The critical condition of the national barite supply early in 1944 led the War Production Board to recommend that the Bureau of Mines attempt to prove the existence of a large reserve tonnage of barite in the Magnet Cove area and arch for new deposits. To carry out this program, the Bureau explored on newly reported. Barite deposits in southern Montgomery County, Ark. The Gap Mountain, Fancy Hill, and Sulphur Mountain barite deposits were investigated. Eight diamond core-drill holes and 1,336 linear feet of surface trenching were completed, and barite samples obtained were analyzed, A study of the Montgomery County barnse district indicates that the lenticular bodies of barite replace a favorable host rock near the base of the Stanley shale formation. Barite is exposed along the side of anticlinal mountains where erosion has truncated the beds on the limbs of the associated synclines. An appreciable amount of barite suitable for commercial use has been indicated by trenching and core drilling. The Gap Mountain and Fancy Hill deposits are controlled by the Magnet Cove Barium Corp. and Baroid Sales Division of National Load Co., respectively. The ore is similar to that of the Magnet Cove area and is amenable to concentration by a flotation process. Mining of these deposits had not been begun by the time the Bureau completed its exploration project."

Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, representatives of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), and members of the mining industry met with other Government and Industry representatives at three seminars held in Pittsburgh, Pa., November 4, 1975; St. Louis, Mo., November 6, 1975; and Denver, Colo., November L1, 1975, to discuss the results of Bureau-sponsored research on coal mine illumination. The program, aimed at developing suitable illumination systems fur the working; places of underground coal mines, covered hardware development and field evaluation and the status of proposed MESA standards and proposed MESA enforcement procedures. These proceedings contain the opening remarks to the seminars and eight technical presentations an various aspects of coal mine illumination.

This report describes the results and conclusions of the further development of a lightweight probe drill for use in anthracite mines. Improvements to the drill previously developed under Contract H0282044 were made and tested at an Eastern Pennsylvania mine. These improvements were: 1. Better hole cleaning due to the development of an air-water mist flushing system. 2. The application of roof drill bits to allow drilling through rock seams and lenses. 3. The development of a quick coupling drill system which reduced total steel change time. 4. Adaptation of a swivel to the drill anchoring system which greatly reduced set-up time between holes. With these improvements the probe drill demonstrated its ability to drill the required 11 holes in one shift. It also gained miner acceptance as a viable underground working tool. The probe drill proved to meet all of the design requirements of portability, low weight drilling controllability, structural integrity and reliability. In addition to its ability to drill the required probe pattern, the probe drill has the capability of drilling long holes. By drilling several holes over 80 feet deep the probe drill has demonstrated a potential for use in robbing pillars and for methane drainage.

[As a part of its investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety, the Bureau of Mines is investigating various means, useful for the elimination or mitigation of the explosion hazards of combustible gases encountered in mining and industry. Information has been obtained and a procedure developed whereby the explosibility of many complex, gaseous, combustible atmosphere may be calculated in a simple manner without the necessity of performing laborious laboratory experiment. In a previous publication4/ data were given and a method described whereby the limits of inflammability of gaseous mixtures, including methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, could be determined by calculation. The information published in that retort enables one to calculate the limits of inflammability of such gases are liberated by mine fires, gases from explosives, automobile exhaust gas, gases present after mine explosions, blast-furnace gas, and other gases containing part of or all of the above-listed constituents.]

This paper is the twelfth of a series on smelting in the lead blast furnace and the fifth dealing with blast-furnace gases. It was noted in Report of Investigations 2957 that the gases evolved from the top of the lead blast furnace at Tooele were similar in composition to those from the top of an iron blast furnace. It was noted in Report of Investigations 3095 that at Kellogg, where a smaller percentage of coke on charge and shorter stock column were employed, the gases evolved were much less reducing. At times there was a considerable amount of oxygen in the top gases at the second plant. More SO2 was also evolved from sulphides in the charge. Then operations were conducted as at Kellogg, the gases were alternately reducing and oxidizing. This paper deals with the gases evolved in smelting a charge containing more zinc than at either of the other two plants with about the same amount of coke as was used at Kellogg,: To compare other factors influencing the composition of the gases, it may be noted that at Tooele the approximate height of the charge column was 15 feet, at Kellogg 9 feet and at Trail 13 feet. The furnaces have about the -same cross-sectional area- tog. The furnaces at Tooele are about 6 inches wider at the tuyeres, being 54 inches wide against 48 for the other two plants. At Tooele and Kellogg the furnaces are fed at the top from bottom-dump cars. At Trail the charges are dumped from Decauville cars (bottom cars which dump when tilted), which run on tracks placed on both sides of the blast furnaces. The hoods through which the waste gases are conducted are directly above the shafts of the furnaces. The flues for removing the effluent gases lead off from under the charge floor at Tooele and Kellogg. (Charging and distribution of the feed in the furnace covered later in a rate paper of series.)

This Bureau of Mines report estimates the population of the principal types of machinery in use by the coal mining industry during 1982 in surface and underground mines. Estimates were arrived at using 1976 coal equipment population estimates as baseline data with modifications made for new mine development, expansion, and closure occurring during 1976-82. Estimates were broken down into 3 regions which included all 26 coal-producing States. Modifications made to the baseline data were computed using (1) actual equipment information when available, plus (2) equipment information hypothesized from representative generic mine models, which were predicated on mine size and mine method. Roughly half of the equipment fleet at new or expanding coal operations was known; the remainder was hypothesized. The mine models used to generate equipment information are included in this report, along with the hypothesized equipment use data. The equations and various factors used to determine the equipment adjustments for mine closings, new mine openings, and small coal mine operations are also identified.

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. The Bureau of Mines conducted both laboratory and field investigations to study the effectiveness of medium-pressure (up to 30,000 psi) water jets in controlling the generation of airborne respirable dust during the hydraulic fragmentation of coal. Laboratory studies were conducted at the Farmington High Energy Test Site of the Twin Cities Mining Research Center, and field studies were carried out at the Humphrey No. 7 mine, Mount Morris, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The water jets were produced by commercially available triplex pumps. The dust samples were collected by midget impinger samplers, and analyzed by electronic and optical counting techniques. Respirable dust concentration for a full-scale production model was projected at below 2 mg/m3, the maximum exposure allowed by the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of berylliferous tuff from Spor Mountain, Utah, were determined in laboratory research conducted by the Bureau of Mines. Two beryllium-bearing minerals--a hydrated form of bertrandite and a berylliferous saponite--were found to be present in the tuff. Each of the beryllium mineral forms predominated in samples from certain areas of the district. The possibility of practicably separating the beryllium minerals from the tuff by physical methods appears remote because of the complexity and nature of the mineral associations. Beryllium mineralization in the region occurs in a rhyolitic tuff usually overlaid by unaltered rhyolite. The beryllium is distributed erratically throughout the tuff in individual mineralized bodies. Many samples of mineralized tuff were examined and found to contain from 0.2 to 1.8 percent BeO. All samples contained a hydrated form of bertrandite that was nearly cryptocrystalline, whereas samples from one area also contained a berylliferous saponite of variable beryllium content. Neither mineral has been previously reported, although related bertrandite-like minerals have been found in the U.S.S.R. and berylliferous minerals of the montmorillonite group have been synthesized. Most of the minerals of the tuff are finely crystalline, intergrown, and have similar densities. The complexity and intimacy of the mineral associations, the difficulty of achieving effective mineral liberation, and the highly friable nature are characteristics that lead to the conviction that tuff of the type examined cannot be effectively concentrated by gravity, magnetic, electrostatic, attrition, washing, sizing, or flotation methods.

The 1954 field tests consisted of six experimental shots in relatively deep holes in a sandstone similar to many oil-bearing sandstones. Water-injection measurements were made before and after each shot to establish the change in conductivity of the fluid caused by the shot. The pressure pulse produced by the shot was recorded in nearby holes to monitor the shot and to determine if any relation existed between the change in conductivity and the nature of the pressure pulse. The results of water-injection tests showed the range of conductivity of fluid before and after shooting with two different types of explosives. Because of the large spread in data for similar shots, not enough information was available to evaluate the differences in increased conductivity produced by the two explosives or any relation between the increased conductivity and the nature of the pressure pulse. However, these results, with the results of other tests involving explosive shots in rock, provide guidance for future research on the oil-well-shooting problem.

The Bureau of Mines performed laboratory experiments to evaluate the triboelectric effect of particulate-laden gas streams on polyethylene pipe at various velocity, humidity, dust-size, and dust-load conditions. Charges in excess of 10 kV were produced on the outside and inside surfaces of laboratory pipe samples, when exposed to 40 pct relative humidity (RH) gas stream containing coal dust. However, no charges were produced in laboratory tests that duplicated the over 75 pct RH and dust-free gas streams found in working underground pipelines. Bare cop- per wire, which is wound around the polyethylene pipe in a 1-ft (31-cm) spacing and grounded, eliminated the charge on the outside surface of the pipe, but not on the inside of the pipe surface,

Pilot Hole "X" was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine would be drilled. The geologic formations encountered in this hole are discussed. Correlation of the geologic horizons encountered in this hole with those encountered in nearby drill holes was accomplished by the use of geophysical logs. Data on the geophysical interpretations are provided. The anticipated geotechnical characteristics of the geologic units encountered in Pilot Hole "X" are described.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 18 domestic titaniferous materials with widely varying compositions, mineralogy, and physical properties in electric-arc furnaces, Techniques were devised to recover both the titanium and iron values contained in these materials so that the reliance of the United States on foreign sources of higher grade ilmenites and rutile might be decreased. Most of the tested titaniferous materials responded well to lower grade or byproduct reductants, such as bituminous coals, charcoal, and coke breeze. Sufficient slag fluidity was realized by maintaining from 8 to 12 wt-pct iron in the slags; no contaminating fluidizers were required. Fluid slags containing up to 79, 70, and 54 wt-pct Ti02 were realized from east coast ilmenites, a rock ilmenite, and a titaniferous magnetite ore, respectively. A carbon-lined furnace shell is recommended for minimum slag contamination. Good results also were obtained during extended submerged-arc furnace tests.

In 1951 the Federal Bureau of Mines became interested in the reports of copper-nickel mineralization in northern Minnesota. Several outcrops on the north side of the Duluth gabbro in the Kawishiwi River area were sampled by the Federal Bureau of Mines and George M. Schwartz of the Minnesota Geological Survey. Because these samples showed appreciable amounts of copper and nickel, a 100-pound sample of an un-altered outcrop was obtained for metallurgical testing. Results from this preliminary work were all favorable; therefore, in the fall of 1953 the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled three holes near the outcrop of the con-tact between the Duluth gabbro and the Algoma granite. A total of 686 feet of NX size hole was drilled, and 100 percent of the core was recovered. Each hole intersected the contact, and the strike and dip for that locality were established. The core was split, and half was used for analyses and further metallurgical tests; the remainder was retained for permanent record in the Bureau of Mines core-storage warehouse.

The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines.

Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64.
