The titanium-iridium alloy system was investigated to determine whether alloys of this system would merit further development as control-rod material for nuclear reactors. A study was made to determine the titanium-iridium phase diagram by using melting-point, thermal analyses, X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, electrical resistivity, and metallographic techniques. The titanium-iridium alloy system was investigated between 500° and 2,400° C. Results indicate the formation of two intermetallic compounds, Ti3Ir rind TiIr3, and one intermediate solid solution centered about the 50 atomic percent iridium composition. A eutectic reaction occurs at 1,475° C, and 19 atomic percent iridium. The Ti3Ir decomposes peritectically at 1,520° C. The intermediate solid solution exhibits a maxima of 2,140° C. at 50 atomic percent iridium. This phase is also believed to undergo an order-disorder transformation at 1,750° C. Another eutectic reaction takes place at 2,000" C. and 60 atomic percent iridium. The compound TiIr3 formed at 75 atomic percent iridium decomposes peritectically at 2,115° C. Further increases in iridium content result in the formation of an iridium-rich terminal solid solution. Information obtained below 900° C. in titanium-rich alloys indicates that iridium acts as a beta stabilizer in titanium, and the authors believe that a eutectoid decomposition of beta-titanium occurs near 500° C. and 10 atomic percent iridium.

"Particles play an important role in our environment and in many aspects of human activity. Much of the Earth's surface - sand, soil, rocks - consists of particles, as do clouds in the atmosphere, smoke from fires, and dust in our homes. Many of the foods we eat - cereals, flour, instant coffee - and everyday items such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, detergents and other cleaning products are encountered in the form of particles. Inks and paints consist of very fine particles dispersed in liquids. Modem agriculture uses huge quantities of fertilizers and pesticides, largely in particulate form. The list could be extended almost indefinitely; particle systems are obviously an important part of our daily lives. But what do we know about them? For most people, the answer is probably: not much.We are all familiar with the three common states of matter: gas, liquid and solid. In many respects, particle systems should be regarded as a distinct class of their own. The particles themselves may be solid but we all know that a heap of sand is quite different from a solid rock. A cloud of liquid droplets - fog - has much more in common with a cloud of solid particles - smoke - than it does with a bucket of water. There are certain characteristics and properties which are unique to the particulate state. The behavior of any particle system is determined not only by the material from which the particles are made, but also by interactions among the particles and with their environment. These interactions become increasingly important as the size of the particles decreases, and for exceedingly fine particles, smaller than about one micrometer (0.000001 meters or 0.00004 inches), these interactions dominate and we enter the realm of colloidal systems.Particle SystemsA system in which discrete entities - particles -are dispersed in a continuous medium can be regarded as a particulate system. The particles and the medium can consist of a solid, liquid or gas. The various combinations and some common examples are listed in Table 1. The properties and behavior of these systems depend on the characteristics of the particles, the nature of the medium, and the relative abundance of the two phases. In general, it is the latter which determines the kind of behavior exhibited by the system.As a general rule, the behavior of particle systems follows that of the dispersed phase (the particles) at high concentration, and that of the continuous phase (the medium) at low concentration. For example, both powders and smokes consist of solid particles in a gaseous medium. However, in a powder the solids typically occupy over one half of the total volume; in many respects powders behave like solids. In a smoke, on the other hand, the particles may take up only a few parts per million of volume, so that these systems generally behave like gases."

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. The cost of reclamation can vary widely, depending on the primary objectives of the restoration activities. statistics in this study originated from State files, publications, and personal communications relating to restoration and pollution control measures for previously mined lands (orphan lands) and active mines. Reclamation of orphan lands is generally considered a public burden and constitutes an economic problem. All work reported here was completed under government contract, by the lowest bidder, with money coming from State and/or Federal funds. Cost would have been substantially lower had the reclamation been concurrent with mining. Several persons connected with some of the projects have observed that costs could probably be reduced by at least one half, if the reclamation had been conducted along with the mining. The expense of clearing and grubbing of volunteer vegetation, disposal of buried trees and brush, loosing of compacted spoil, and re-establishing access to areas could be saved. In addition, a contracting firm doing the work for a government agency would have mobilization costs and receive a profit. Mining companies also are profit conscious and would consider these costs in anticipating their profits (e.g., overhead would be less if reclamation is integrated with mining). The data presented here should serve as a guide for estimating and determining cost ranges, however, it should be recognized that variations exist. Adjustments may be necessary from the standpoint of physical conditions, economic conditions, price changes, and more restrictive requirements of recent surface mining laws. Reclamation conditions, procedures and successes in the eastern United States, particularly in Appalachia, have no bearing on conditions to be expected in the western United States. The situations are wholly different. Reclamation in the West differs from th t in the East, primarily because of aridity especially a during the summer months 1). Because of the many variables and differences between reclamation in eastern and western areas, they will be discussed separately.

The American public has at all times been prone to discuss important questions that call for consideration and adjustment. Debatable subjects upon which sides may be taken always receive unusual prominence, but other questions equally important may be neglected. The real "paramount issue," calling for remedial action, is the ever-increasing number of deaths caused by preventable accidents. This matter demands the attention of the entire American people; the importance of accident prevention can not be overemphasized, and in many phases of American life, especially among the mining and allied industries, far too little real attention has been given the importance of conserving life and limb by accident prevention. ACCIDENTS COMPARED TO WAR AS A CAUSE OF DEATH Harry T. Hoffman, Wyoming labor commissioner, writes the following: It is one of the peculiar complexes of this rapidly moving age that we all stand aghast at the horrors of war and view with appar- ent indifference the greater havoc of industrial peace. Did you ever stop to think that approximately twice as many people were killed by accidents in the United States in 1929, as there were American soldiers killed in the entire period of the World War? Every employer and every worker should be thoroughly aroused over the tremendous toll levied against industrial forces by accidents which are largely preventable and develop a faith in safety efforts that will fire them with a zeal as pronounced as that of their religion or their patriotism. Let us remember safety-first to the end that the workman shall live to enjoy the fruits of his labor; that his mother shall have the comfort of his arm in her age; that his wife shall not be untimely a widow; that his children shall have a father; that crip- ples and helpless wrecks who were strong men shall no longer be a by-product of industry.

"In the fall of 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began an inquiry as to the possibility of utilizing airplanes in conjunction with its rescue work, for quickly transporting engineers and oxygen rescue-apparatus to mine disasters.It was realised that this proposed use of airplanes has serious limitations, and if it were feasible, that the Bureau would have to rely on the cooperation of the established aviation fields of the U. S. Air Service for furnishing airplane service. Therefore Van. H. Manning, Director of the Bureau of Mines, under date of October 28, 1919, wrote the Director of Air Service outlining the rescue and first aid organization of the Bureau, the location of headquarters of district engineers, the distribution of safety cars and stations, and other essential details, and asking whether the Air Service could cooperate with the Bureau in the event of serious mine disasters. Major-General Charles T. Menoher, Director of Air Service, responded that the Air Service would be glad to cooperate insofar as possible, and designated those Air Service stations nearest the district engineers' headquarters, which might be best able to assist.The Bureau of Mines has ten mine rescue cars and eight mine safety stations distributed throughout the mining regions of the United States. The cars are each equipped with sets of oxygen mine-rescue breathing-apparatus and first-aid supplies. The car personnel consists of a mining engineer, surgeon, foreman, first-aid miner, clerk and cook. A foreman miner is in charge of each station and at five of the eight stations are mine safety trucks. The work of the cars and stations is two-fold; (1) Assisting in rescue and recovery work at mine disasters, and (2) training miners in mine rescue and first-aid methods, and in investigations looking to prevention of mine accidents. The country is divided into nine safety districts, with nine district engineers in charge."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash- softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the hardgrove grind- ability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instruc- tions issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the con- tractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal. The Government purchased approximately 5-1/4 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1953. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 11,435 samples. These are published for the use of Government officials and the public. A series of publications has been completed on coal analyses by States, or, where production is small in any one State, by groups of adjacent States. In addition to analytical data showing composition and quality of coals of the States, the publications con- tain brief descriptions of the geological structure of the coal basins, typical mining conditions in the various districts, the principal economic data of the industry, and the relationship of mine or channel samples to delivered and tipple samples. The present publication covers many States but deals only with the analytical data of the coals. Recently 30 men wore viewing the demonstration of a now portable electric arc-welding outfit. A few hours later 17 of the 30 men reported to the doctor for treatment. They were suffering from traumatic conjunctivitis. In two cases the gain was very severe and the symptoms were similar to those of iritis. orphine had to be administered to afford relief from pain. Only two men of the 30 wera not affected in some way from this exposure. These two men were thick-lensed orange-colored glasses. Several of the men wore orange-colored glasses with thin lenses, but the latter were not heavy enough to afford protection.against an exposure as long as took place. The distance of the eye from the are also in- fluences the possibility of injury. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the con- junctiva; the conjunctiva is the mucous membrane covering the inside of the eye- lids and part of the eyeball. Traumatic conjunctivitis is caused by foreign bodies in the eye, exposure of the eyes to high winds, dust, smoke, intense light from electric arc lamps, and from electric welding apparatus. In the instance mentioned above, the inflammation was due to the ultra-violet rays. The ultra-violet rays lie beyond the violet rays in the spectrum and are invisible to the eye. In some cases the effect is so severe that, in addition to conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the skin similar to sunburn is produced. The symptons of conjunctivitis caused by intense light or by the ultra- violet rays are marked photophobia (abnormal intolerance to light), excessive secretion of tears, intense starting of the lid, contraction of the pupil, some- times swelling of the lid, and small ulcers developing on the eyeball or cornea. Unless properly treated by a physician immediately, chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, or retina, and possibly blindness, may result. Under proper treatment most cases get wall in a few days. All treatments should be under the direction of a physician. That usually advised is to place ice packs on the patient's eyes three or four times daily. The pack should be left on from 15 minutes to an hour. The eyes should be irrigated with normal salt solution (a teaspoonful to a quart of sterile vater) or a saturated solution of boric acid several times daily. If there is a discharge of pus, a few drops of a 25 per cent solution of argyrol or a 5 per cent solution of protargol should bo placed in the eyes three to six times daily. The patient should be confined to a darkened room until his condition improves in order to avoid complications. These treatments will reduce the swelling, give the patient confort, and prevent the development of chronic conjunctivitis. In severe cases it may be necessary to administer morphine to relieve the pain.

The Bureau of Mines, in a continuing effort to improve processes and methods of helium purification, has developed a differential distillation method for removing helium-3 from helium-4. Differential distillation at 4.2 to 1.6 K was used to reduce the helium-3 in helium-4 from about 200 to less than 1 part per billion. The results from four stills ranging in size from 1 to 25 liters are reported. The method has the potential to be adapted to commercial-scale separations.

The Torpedo copper mine in the Organ Mining, District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered in 1899, and production of copper from oxidized-ore deposits was begun in 1900. Production continued through 1907, but operations were only intermittent frown 1907 through 1921. The production of copper during these periods amounted to about 3,500,000 pounds. Reserves primary sulfide copper ore were believed to occur below the old workings, and after a detailed examination of accessible workings and a study of drilling records of several private companies by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, a development program of diamond core drilling was initiated. This investigation was started October 3, 1949; and completed April 30, 1950. Four holes totaling 2,122.3 feet wore diamond-drilled, and 70 samples were analyzed. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feet drill having special rods and core barrels to increase the recovery of core in critical zones. This report describes the location, history, ore deposits, and factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines from the drilling.

"INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania anthracite industry produced 53 million net tons of anthracite during 1945. Fifty-one million tons was prepared for the commercial market (3), 3/ and 2 million tons (consisting of fine sizes) was used for colliery power consumption. Of the number of tons prepared for market, 17 million tons (33 1/3 percent) was prepared by the use of acid mine water treated with lime.Mine water from underground workings is pumped, drained, and stored in huge quantities. The mine-drainage systems in the anthracite region handle over 200 billion gallons of water annually, of which 150 billion gallons is pumped to the surface. More than 69 billion gallons of water is impounded in underground pools (1). Much of this water is employed for breaker use, dust-control installations; hydraulic backfilling, combatting mine fires; and aiding in the transportation of anthracite in gently dipping places where sheet iron is used Roos(4) estimates that 1,100 gallons of mine water is utilized in the preparation of anthracite mined."

This report presents the geometric parameters (attitude, spacing, extent, and aperture) of fracture patterns in a selected portion (study area) of San Manuel copper mine, Arizona. The geometric parameters are quantified for input to structural analyses for studies of the influence of fractures on cavability of ores. Using an orientation analysis procedure developed earlier by the Bureau, three prominent and nearly orthogonal sets of fracture orientations were delineated in the study area. Sets 1 and 2 dip nearly vertically, and generally strike east-west and north-south, respectively, whereas set 3 is nearly horizontal. Both a horizontal rotation (of 14° to 26° for sets 1 and 2, respectively) and a tilt (of 20° for set 3) is shown to occur between the 1415 and 2015 levels of the mine. Gomparison of the three major rock types present in the study area (quartz monzonite, monzonite porphyry, and rhyolite) show that the rhyolite is characterized by short extent, small spacing, and tightness of fractures as well as the general absence of fracture set 3, which may account for its generally observed strong resistance to caving.

A line of cordeau detonating fuse was placed in hole No. 2, no electric detonators being used in the hole. After 12 or 13 cases of 40 per cent nitro starch powder had been poured into the hole in loose form, it was found that a space of only 17 ft. remained for stemming. It was decided that space for an additional case of powder might be obtained by tamping the charge. The tamping was done with a heavy plunger, about 3 or 3 inches in diameter and 10 inches long, made of lead with an iron core with an iron eye in the top to which a 3/4 inch rope was attached, and weighing between 30 and 40 pounds. This weight was intended for use in sinking explosive in wet holes, and not for tamping. It is estimated that the tamping had continued at least 10 The quarry superintendent had gone a considerable distance for a box of powder, returned, and reached a point about 10 feet from the hole, minutes.

From the most remote periods of civilization, stone Las been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns) or single markers to great obelisks and pyramid or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1050 at a cost estimated at a: high as $50,000,000, and it is today an object of unusual attraction for travelers. Other magnificent memorials, both ancient and modern, are to be found in many lands. Memorials of varying design have characterized the passing centuries and have found an important place in the New World. In early days, monuments were chiefly imported into America, but gradually an extensive memorial stone-manufacturing industry developed on this side of the Atlantic. Sales value of domestic memorials, f.o.b. quarry or mill, attained a maximum of $17,488,755 in 1920, and retail sales, of course, reached a much higher figure. Modest markers and tombstones are to be found in almost every rural community in the United States, and there are many elaborate and costly monuments in and near urban centers.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of platinum, palladium, and rhodium from 16 deposits in four market economy countries (MEC's). Major recoverable products include 164 Moz of platinum, 80 Moz of palladium, 13 Moz of rhodium, 24 Moz of ruthenium, 4 Moz of Iridium, 2 Moz of Osmium, and 10 Moz of gold. The 12 deposits in the Republic of South Africa are estimated to account for 96.7 pct of total recoverable platinum. The base-case scenario estimates the long-term cost of production including recovery of capital, but provides no return on the investment or O-pct discounted cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR). The total production costs in January 1990 U.S. dollars ranged from $325/oz to $1,288/oz of platinum compared to an average January 1990 price of $492/oz. Approximately 83 pct of total recoverable platinum was economic at a cost level of $4S0/oz or less. At the IS-pct DCFROR, only 26 pct of total recoverable platinum was economic. For platinum-group metals (PGM), attention has been focused on the ratios of the three primary metals: platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Sensitivity analyses were performed to determine the impact long-term rhodium price increases could have on the total cost of production for platinum and palladium.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies to compare the effectiveness of the cross-measure borehole system with that of surface gob holes on two successively mined retreating longwalls in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. Only the cross-measure system was in operation on panel A; on panel B, both systems were in operation. In addition, the cross-measure bore-holes on panel B were drilled parallel to the face, whereas those on panel A were drilled at a 45O angle with respect to the longwall axis. The studies show that the cross-measure system captured 71 pct of the methane generated by longwall mining on panel A. On panel B, the sur- face gob hole dominated over the cross-measure system for about 700 ft (213 m) after it was intercepted. Beyond that point, the cross-measure system dominated. About 93 pct of the methane generated on panel B was captured by the two systems. Cross-measure boreholes that were drilled parallel to the face were as effective as boreholes oriented 45" with respect to the longwall axis. In addition, they are shorter and require less drilling time. Comparison between observed gas pressure differentials in boreholes and calculated values indicate that boreholes can be shortened further to 140 ft (43 m). Additional studies are needed to verify these calculations.

Several short color films describing new technology developed through Bureau of Mines research are available on a loan basis. The films review results of Bureau research programs aimed at aiding the minerals industry by increasing mine productivity, ensuring worker health and safety, and enhancing minerals recovery, processing and recycling. Most of the films are available in a choice of for mats: 16mm film, ½" VHS cassette tape, or ¾" U-matic tape. The films are loaned by the Bureau of Mines free of charge; borrowers are requested to pay only the return postage and for any damage to the films. All titles are also available for purchase in 16mm or videotape formats. Interested persons wishing to borrow or purchase a film should specify its title and the preferred and alternate showing dates. The basic mining law of French Morocco is the Edict of 1914, "Danir of Jamary 19, 1914, for the Regulation of Mineral Prospecting and Exploitation in the Zone of the French Protectorate of the Cherifien Empire," which, as the preamble states, was promulgated at the instance of the Director General of Public Works, in consideration of the fact that mines constitute one of the sources of wealth of the Empire. According to a consular report, dated May 18, 1923, by Bradford, men- tioned above, the mining industry of that country, aside from the exploitation of the extensive phosphate deposits, can scarcely be said to exist, but the potential field for mining is promising. However, no large-scale exploitation of the mineral wealth of French Morocco can be hoped for until there is complete pacification of large areas that are still in an unsubdued state or until adequate transportation facilities, scientific prospecting, and large investments of cap- ital are assured. An edict in 1920 (Dahir of January 27, 1920) modified the law mentioned above by declaring the prospecting for and the exploitation of phosphates to be exclusively reserved to the Government. The Dahir o. August 7, 1920, announced the creation of the Cherifien Phosphate Office (Office. Cherifien des Phosphates), a State monopoly charged with the exploration, management, and exploitation of the phosphates of Morocco.

Many bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania. Story of the Explosion At about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No. 2 butt left and parallel off No. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of No. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 13 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air as explosion occurred.
