In a certain application2/ it was necessary to compute the beta function B(p, q) for a certain set of values p and q. Since t he set of p and q values was much mo re finely spaced than those in any published tables, the authors decided to make their results available in this report. In connection with this application the functionB(p, q) was needed at various points in the p, q plane at intervals of 0.05, 0.05<p = q< 10.00. Fletcher, Miller, and Rosenhead2/ state that the only tables available in the desired range are those of Rearson.4/ However, the interval used by Pearson was not small enough for the present application. For this reason it was decided to calculate B(p, q) for p = q =0.05 (0.05) 10. 00.2/ This table is published because of the fundamental importance in mathematical analysis of the complete beta function.

The K.T. Dome Mine in Owen and Henry Counties, Ky., has been operated intermittently under several different owners since the early nineteen hundreds. No record of total production is available, but it is said that during 1943 and 1944, while being operated by the Twin Valley Mining Co., 30 cars of zinc concentrates and 10 cars of lead concentrates were shipped. The vein can be traced for about 10 miles along the strike from Lockport, Henry County, to Big Twin Creek in Owen County. It pinches and swells both vertically and horizontally and is reported to average 20 inches in width. In order to develop additional reserves on the property, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes on the south extension of the vein. Drilling disclosed that the vein dips to the west on the south side of the Kentucky River and is continuous along the strike and in depth. However, the extent of mineralization in the vein varies widely.

Magnetite mines in the Sterling tract, Orange County, N. Y., were operated almost continuously from pre-Revolutionary days until 1923. The Red-Back mine, one of several in this tract, was discovered in 1780; operated briefly in 1880; and abandoned, presumably because the iron ore contained considerable sulfur. The mine is in rough, mountainous country, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,100 feet. The magnetite deposit occurs in complex metamorphosed pre-Cambrian formation and is thought to be a replacement of limestone by magnetite. A dip-needle survey, completed in 1916, traced magnetic anomalies for a mile along the outcrop. A preliminary examination of the Red-Back mine was made by W. T. Millar, Bureau of Mines engineer, in December 1942. The Bureau of Mines bored seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,727.6 feet during the winter of 1943-44. A zone of magnetite mineralization was intersected in each of the holes.

This paper, which describes mining methods and costs at the Kearney zinc-lead mine, is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in varicus mining districts of the United States. The Kearney mine, which is owned by the New Mexico Consolidated Mining Co., a subsidiary of the Peru Mining Co. (Illinois Zinc), is situated a few miles southeast of the town of Hanover, in the northwest corner of sec. 27, T. 17 S., R. 12 W., in the Central Mining District, Grant County, N. Mex. (Figs. 1 and 2.) This report presents a brief history of the district, describes the geology, and outlines methods of prospecting and exploration, including eampling and estimation of tonnages and values. Development and mining methods are explained, and transportation, ventilation, drainage, safety measures, and organizatich are described. The wage scale and mining costs comprise the concluding sections of the report.

Six tests were made by the Alaska Station of the Bureau of Mines on a sample of black sand delivered to the station by Messrs. James, Eagan & Griffen from Fairbanks Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska, to devise a method of recovering the gold content. More than 90 per cent of this black sand consisted of magnetite and garnet which can be separated magnetically. The Station has no equipment for magnetic separation other than an electromagnet similar to the one used by Day and Richards, (Day, D.T., and Richards, R.H., Investigations of Black Sands from Placer Mines, U. S. Geol. Survey, Bull. 285, 1906, pp. 150-163), which can only be used satisfactorily on small samples. To treat the entire lot of black sand with this machine would have been impracticable. Therefore only a small part of the sand was so treated, the rest being divided into five lots in order to obtain comparative results from other methods of treatment.

"The evolution during oxidation of the internal structure of soot and carbon black particles was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and an image analysis system. Increasing ordering to the carbon structure with increasing oxidation is observed. Measures of the increased order are increases in the fractional coverage of a cross section of the particles with a layered structure, a decrease in the mean interlayer spacing, and a decrease in the spread of the interlayer spacing. The changing structure of the carbon black impacts its properties, such as the rate of oxidation.There is considerable interest in the study of the structural changes of carbonaceous materials as a function of oxidation. Davis et al.1 measured the variation of carbon dioxide surface area of various coals as a function of residence time in a flow reactor. HRTEM measurements revealed that crystallite dimensions and interlayer spacings are altered by combustion. Ishiguro et al.2 showed that oxidation alters the structure of diesel soot. The aim of our current research is to develop a better understanding of the microstructural reordering of carbon blacks with implications to their properties. The carbon blacks used in this research have already been studied and their reactivities as a function of oxidation measured.3The methodology used in this work has already been described in detail elsewhere.4 This paper presents an application to quantify the structural changes of carbon black particles as a function of oxidation and graphitization. The technique used is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, chars, etc., possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure. The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic5 or as crumpled sheets6 to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of electron micros¬copy in studying the morphology of such materials has been well established,2,7,8 although only a few attempts toward quantification have been made.The sample observed was carbon black CB330 from De¬gussa. One set of carbon black samples were oxidized in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in air at 575 0C, so that the conversion varied from 0 to 96%. Another set of carbon black samples were graphitized (Graphpac-GB by ALLTECH) and then oxidized in the TGA at 680 °C until 92% burnout was reached. The latter samples are called GB 0% and GB 92%, respectively.For the HRTEM observation a small portion of each sample was ultrasonically dispersed in ethanol. The suspension was deposited dropwise on a copper TEM grid coated with a lacey carbon film. The examination of the samples was carried out on areas that extend over the holes in the supporting film in order to avoid interference from the amorphous carbon background film An oriented gold crystal was used as a calibration standard and subjected to the same techniques as the carbon black samples."

"Reduction of mine accidents appears to depend upon essentially the same fundamentals, whether considered from the viewpoint of the mine operator, miner, State mine inspector, or safety engineer. Conditions of mine operation with respect to safety are governed in most States by a mining law, usually somewhat general in its provisions but more specific than laws dealing with other industries, Methods of mining development and practice evolved through experience have been handed down from generation to generation; many of these are intended to avoid injury to men and also loss of property. To carry out the intent of these bases of law and experience relating to safety supplemental measures and conditions are necessary. Among these may be: (1) Planned safety rules adapted to the mine and compliance by both officials and Miners with such of these rules as pertain to their work; (2) a supervisory force adequate and competent to ¬administer the mining laws and safety rules; (3) discipline adequate to secure compliance with safety measures; (4) safeguards against mechanical, electrical, falling, and other hazards; (5) mining operations planned with respect to safety of workers; (6) an active safety organization of officials and employees; (7) education of officials and employees in safety practices; and (8) an active sustained interest in safety by management and employees.This paper presents the viewpoint of the safety engineer, though a safety engineer connected with a specific mine or group of mines would be in a better position than the writer to present the industrial engineer's thought. The application of the mine safety fundamentals just outlined will be given consideration from observations of methods used by safety engineers and supervisors.The term ""safety engineer"" includes men of various duties, various degrees of experience, and various authority. Depending upon the size of the operation or the interest of the management in safety, the safety engineer may have accident prevention as his sole duty; he may be the head of a sizable safety organization; or he may be in part a claim agent; a statistician compiling figures for the enlightenment of the company, the public, or a mining institute meeting; a surveyor who must convince the miner that his scale of 10/10 equals 1 foot does not defraud the miner of 6 inches to every yard measured; or he may be by heaven¬ly gift an orator capable of assuring the employees that ""all's right with the world""; he may be a young engineer gaining, experience while checking the observance of company rules and investigating accidents; or he may have the physical ills frequently resulting from several decades of mining experience and instead of a pension, the position of safety engineer has fallen to his lot. He may have mine-operating authority to correct immediately a dangerous condition or practice or he may have his recommendations officially disregarded at the monthly meeting or when the bottom of the desk basket is reached. He is likely to find that his viewpoint on accident reduction is considered unsound today because of youth and inexperience and unsound later because of old age and senility. He is likely to find the easiest course to be that of attributing to Providence and the carelessness of the worker the mishaps that result in the removal of a man to the hospital or the morgue."

"Generally, the hazard of cool-dust explosions in tipples and cleaning plants is not given the consideration that is given it underground. This lack of consideration is probably due to failure to appreciate the potential hazard. An explosion in a tipple or cleaning plant is basically little or no different from an explosion underground. If bituminous-coal dust is raised into a cloud in the air and comes in contact with arcs from motor brushes, switches, or open flame, the dust is very likely to ignite, and flame will very probably propagate or extend through it if the quantity of dust per unit of air space is sufficient. The open space in a tipple or cleaning plant may reduce the violence of the explosion, but it is not likely to prevent ignition or propagation of flame.The movement of coal through a tipple or cleaning plant naturally puts into suspension a large amount of dust, which finally settles on exposed surfaces. Any disturbance that will put this dust into suspension in a sense enough cloud can result in the dust being ignited by an arc or open flame if one should be present. An explosion of bituminous-coal dust in a tipple or cleaning plant generally can be prevented either by keeping it thoroughly clean or by removing all sources of ignition, or both.The tests at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Experimental mine have shown that the explosibility of coal dust is proportional (other things being equal) to the ratio of the volatile matter to the volatile matter plus the fixed carbon, indicated thus:The volatile ratio for the Pittsburgh coal bed is calculated as follows:Therefore, as the volatile matter decreases the liklihood of ignition decreases; however, coal-dust explosibility depends on other factors also, such as fineness, dryness, and cloud density; and under some conditions other factors also intervene.Proof of the explosibility of coal dust in the absence of explosive gas has been shown in numerous cases in mines and mine plants and also by a series of tests. In these tests a dense cloud of dust is blown onto an open flame or an electric arc, almost invariably with resultant exploding of the dust. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines has made a number of demonstrations of the explosibility of Pittsburgh coal-bed dust, using a small gallery or box in which a cloud of coal dust is blown onto a lighted match; larger-scale tests have been made with an electric arc as the igniting agent. Bituminous-coal dust is readily ignited with a medium arc, but with low-volatile coals a larger arc is required. For test purposes, a 100-ampere arc has been used. Ignition has occurred readily under these conditions with Pocahontas No. 5 coal dust with ratios of volatile to total combustible of 0.232 to 0.253, and with Pocahontas No. 3 coal dust with a combustible ratio of 0.242. Lower Kittanning coal dust, with a ratio of 0.187, did not give definite ignitions, and Pocahontas No. 4 dust did not explode, although part of the coal-dust cloud ignited. It is probable that even the low-volatile coal dust will be found to be explosive with a higher-amperage electric arc as the initiating agent."

In order to assist the various Federal and State agencies using large quantities of coal to select coal best suited technically and economically to their use, the United States Bureau of Mines has placed at their disposal a fuel inspection service. As part of this service, inspections are made at the mines which propose to furnish coal to these agencies on contracts. Such inspections cover both the mine itself to ascertain its capacity to fur- nish the desired tonnage and quality of the coal, the preparation of the coal in the tipple, and the obtaining of samples for analysis to determine the quality of coal as shipped. To insure that the sample sent to the laboratory for analysis is representative of the average quality of the coal, increments are taken at intervals until a gross sample of about 1,000 pounds of coal has been collected from each of the sizes of coal shipped by the mine, while coal has been coming from all parts of the mine. In reducing this gross sample to the small sample which is sent to the laboratory for analysis it is necessary to crush and quarter the coal by a certain standardized method until only 5 or 6 pounds of coal small enough to pass through a 3/16-inch square-mesh screen remains. The ordinary method which the bureau has followed was to crush the coal by hand with a tamper, such as is used for tamping concrete, on some hare smooth surface and to reduce the volume by quartering and riffling. During the past few years the demands from various Federal and State agencies for this service have been increasing rapidly in respect to bituminous coals. In addition to this, which might be called the normal increase, numerous requests have been received for similar service in respect to anthracite. It was obvious that if this increased demand was to be met it would be necessary either to increase the force allotted to this work or to provide the present force with some means by which their work could be made more effective. A care- ful survey of the situation showed that the greatest amount of time was consumed in trans- porting the men and their equipment from mine to mine in the same district, and in reducing the gross sample to the small finely crushed sample which is to be sent to the laboratory. Both of these phases of the work could be greatly accelerated by providing a motor truck of suitable speed and capacity, carrying a power-operated crusher, and the proper auxiliary equipment to store the gross sample as collected and to reduce it in volume efficiently after it has been crushed. Such a truck has been provided and placed in service. In the eight months it has been in operation the desired results have been fully attained. About twice as many samples as usual have been taken during that time by the same 2-pan crew assigned to this work. Many of the mines in the eastern part of the United States are in hilly or mountainous regions and can be reached only over rough, practically unimproved roads. The Bureau of Mines is endeavoring to ascertain how mineral fuels in which the Government has a direct interest, by ownership or use, can be utilized with highest efficiency. For this reason the bureau has been, and is, carrying on investigations to ascertain the condi- tions of furnace construction and management that are necessary to insure the smokeless combustion of the different coals that are found in public lands or are purchased for Government ships and power plants. Another reason for the bureau undertaking these investigations is the need of better furnace management and a more careful selec- tion of fuel at many Government plants. There are Federal build- ings in hundreds of cities. The coals available at many of these cities differ greatly in quality, and the furnaces in some of the Fed- eral buildings were not designed for efficient utilization of the cheap- est available coal. Hence, some of the boiler plants smoke badly unless fed with low-volatile coal and have caused repeated com- plaints not only from neighboring property owners who have suffered damage, but from persons endeavoring to create a civic pride in clear air. In the course of its fuel investigations the bureau has noted the conditions governing fuel consumption in different cities and has studied the attempts made by these cities to abate smoke through the passage of ordinances imposing penalties on smoky stacks. Some results of that study are presented in this report. The most im- portant conclusion reached is that smoke abatement by ordinance can not hope to succeed unless supported by public sentiment and that a smoke ordinance should look to future prevention rather than to immediate prohibition. In other words, strict control of furnace construction offers much greater hope for smoke abatement than desultory imposition of severe penalties on the escape of "dense" or "black" smoke.

On March 6, 1924, the Bureau of Mines approved the ""M.S.A. self-rescuer’ manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., after the M.S.A- self-rescuer bad passed all the tests and requirements of the Bureau's Schedule 14A4.The purpose of the self-rescuer is to help miners to escape from mines in which fires are burning or explosions have occurred, by providing protection from carbon monoxide for at least one half-hour. The self-rescuer can be used similarly by workers above ground who may through accident become surrounded or entrapped by atmospheres containing carbon monoxide.no hazards threaten the miner, who escapes serious injury by fire or violence in a large mine fire namely, ( 1) asphyxiation by poisonous carbon monoxide gas; and (2) suffocation by insufficient oxygen to support life. In order to save himself, the miner must either erect a barrica4e5 against afterdamp and wait restoration of ventilation and rescue or take a long chance at getting out of the mine through entries not permeated by afterdamp.. The self-rescuer removes the hazard of carbon monoxide poisoning for one half-hour or more, and accordingly greatly increases the miner's chance of saving his life.This paper describes the construction and details of the M.S.A. self-rescuer as approved by the Bureau of Mines, and discusses its performance under test condition"

"Production of explosives for industrial use in,the United States during 1934 continued the upward trend begun in 1933 from the low-level output of 1932, and the output in 1934 was only slightly less than in 1931.Reports to the United Stated Bureau of Mines from companies engaged in the manufacture of industrial explosives showed that the quantity of explosives manufactured in the United States and sold during 1934 for use within the various States was 314,767,922 pounds - 23 percent more than in 1931.Production during 1934 included 39,207,845 pounds of permissible explosives 5 206,625,027 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and,68,935,050 pounds of black blasting powder of which 37,192,700 pounds were in granular form and 31,742,350 pounds in pellet form. These figures represent an increase over 1933 of 15.6 percent for permissible explosives, 30.9 percent for other high explosive, and 7.4 percent for black powder.Coal-mining operations were the chief consumers of permissible explosives; 99 percent of the total output in 1934 was used, in coal mines. The proportion used by bituminous mines was 59 percent and by anthracite mines 40 percent. Coal mining was likewise the principal consumer of black blasting powder, taking 88 percent of the total sales during 1934; of this proportion, bituminous mines received 78 percent and anthracite mines between 9 and 10 percent. Consumers of high explosives other than permissibles were more varied; the reports showed that 11 percent of the total quantity sold was for coal mining, 22 percent for metal mining, 17 percent for quarrying and nonmetallic-mineral mining, 46 percent for railway and other construction work, and 4 percent for all other purposes."

"INTRODUCTION The increased use of coal as pulverized fuel has focused attention on the grindability of coal and on the necessity of evaluating this property by a method suitable for use in the usual coal-testing laboratory. Without some knowledge of how various coals behave in the grinding operation, that is, how their use affects mill capacity and power requirements, the selection of coals for pulverized-fuel plants cannot be made on the same critical basis used in selecting coals for other types of burning equipment. The grindability of a coal, serves principally as an indication of the mill capacity attainable in grinding it - not as a direct index of the total cost of grinding. Although the grindability of coal may play a minor role at some plants, it is a decidedly important factor where pulverizer capacity limits the ability to carry high loads.Purpose Standardized tests for determining the grindability of coal are relatively new, so that the information now available on the grindability of various coals is limited in comparison, for example, with that available on proximate analyses. Published information is restricted to determinations on many important Eastern coals by the Fuel Engineering Co. of New York, 4/ a bulletin giving the results of numerous tests by the Babcock and Wilcox Co. 5/, and a comprehensive report on. Alabama coals by the Bureau of Mines. 6/This report presents the results of grindability tests of 34 samples of coals from Illinois, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and British Columbia at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Seattle, Wash., in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington. In the future, as the laboratories of the Bureau make grindalility tests of other coals, additional reports will be issued."

"INTRODUCTION The underground mine of the Miami Copper Co. has operated since 1927 without a fatality from blasting or the handling of explosives. To improve safety and efficiency, electrical blasting has been used exclusively since 1934. During the period January 1, 1934, to December 31, 1948, inclusive, over 4,000 tons of explosives were used to produce 60,925,071 tons of ore with 896,760 feet of development footage and 2,591,788 square feet of undercut area.The purpose of this paper is to recount the company's precautions to insure safe handling of explosives at this operation, where safety involves careful planning rather than ""trial and error.""GENERAL INFORMATIONThe Miami Copper Co. operates on underground mine in a large, low-grade, Porphyry copper deposit near Miami, Ariz. The deposit contains numerous fractures and planes of weakness, which contribute to ease of working the ore bodies by the block-caving method of mining.An individual stope-caving method is used with stoles 150 feet by 200 to 300 feet and 30- to 50-foot pillars between stapes. After the stope is undercut, the ore is drawn through the draw raises on the grizzly level, and thence through the transfer raises to the ore chutes on the haulage level.Access to the mine is by four active shafts, three of which are primarily for ventilation. No. 5 shaft is used for both hoisting and service. There are four operating levels in the mine. The elevations of the grizzly levels are governed by the contour of the bottom of the ore body and therefore vary in different locations in, the mine.Grizzly levels are on the 850, 900, and 975 levels. The 1,000 level is the haulage level. This mine operates in very low-grade ore and requires economical handling of large tonnages safely and efficiently."

The New York State Department of Transportation recently commenced highway widening and drainage improvement projects in Clarence and Amherst, NY. Drainage improvements including the installation of storm sewer lines required excavation to a depth of 2.5 m (8.2 ft). In September 2002, NYSDOT stopped further blasting when 800 ppm CO was detected in the basement of a house near the blasting site. At the insistence of NYSDOT, the general contractor developed a new blast plan with the assistance of an environmental consultant. The plan provided for the installation of multi-gas monitors in buildings of special concern and/or with basements and residential type CO monitors in all other buildings within 100m (330 ft) of the blast. The multi-gas monitors would be remotely monitored. The plan provided action levels which would ensure public safety. The blast design was also modified to allow for better venting of CO. Blasts were limited to 20 ft lengths. The overburden was to be removed from the rock and blasting mats put in place to prevent flyrock. Approximately twenty feet of trench adjacent to the blast was left open to allow ground movement and gas release. The use of CO monitors was effective to alert occupants of a building to the presence of CO. The most effective appeared to be the residential type CO alarms with digital readouts. They were simple and easy to use and allowed the public to participate in the process. False alarms were repeatedly received with the more sophisticated instrumentation. Residential type CO monitors are preferable to warn people near blast sites. More sophisticated instrumentation should be avoided unless personnel are experienced in its use. A general overview of the blasting and monitoring is presented and discussed. The use and effectiveness of residential type CO monitors and multi-gas monitors are discussed.

[A colorimetric method5/ for the determination of benzene in amounts as low as 0.001 mg has been developed recently at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station by the authors, with the assistance of chemical personnel fro a the Allegheny County (Pa.) Relief Works Division. The method is based on the direct nitration of either liquid - or gas - phase benzene, followed by neutralization, extraction with butanone, and final treatment with sodium hydroxide which produces a violet color. The color is matched with color standards of known values. Although the method is adaptable to many conditions the primary objective was a procedure that would be suitable for hygienic investigations. The development worth included a study of possible interference by chemicals that be present in those situations in which the method. would be employed. In this study it was found that a specimen of hexane prepared by the Gulf Research Laboratory, Pittsburgh, by fractionation of West Virginia natural gas gave positive result for benzene, whereas a specimen of pentane prepared in the same manner showed only a trace, and specimens of n -heptane and octane (2,2,4 trimethylpentane) supplied by Eastman Kodak Co. save a negative result. According to information obtained from the Eastman Kodak Co. the latter two compounds were highly purified, the n-heptene being prepared from line and the octane synthesized in the laboratory. On nitration of a larger amount of tae natural hexane a visible quantity, of needlelike crystals which resembled those of m-dinitrobenzene was obtained. The hexane from this nitration was recovered by distillation and again nitrated, but no crystals or colorimetric indication of benzene was obtained. This imitated that the specimen of natural hexane contained a substance which at least had the chemical behavior of benzene.]

A method of error analysis has been applied to the location technique of non-linear least squares iterative inversion in order to evaluate the resolving power of several seismic array configurations with various assumed earth models and errors and inaccuracies in arrival times. The results obtained demonstrate that lateral accuracies of location are improved significantly when the depth of the miner is known. Lateral location to within 100 feet appears achievable in many instances. If it is possible to refine earth models significantly beyond what has normally been assumed in this work by the use of on-site data, or if the mine is shallow (300 feet or less), accuracies of-about 30 feet or so may be attainable. Inaccuracies in earth models of about 5% are found to contribute much more heavily to these location inaccuracies than errors of a few milliseconds in picking arrival times; however, arrival time errors of 15-20 ms or above will dominate these model inaccuracies. The expected accuracy of location is found to fall off very rapidly as the miner moves outside the array. The strength of this effect depends markedly upon the geometry of the array configuration and can be reduced by careful design. Also, as the size of the array is increased, expected location errors within the array are not altered much, but continue to match the error associated with the smaller array over a larger area (assuming that all stations can still pick up the miner&apos;s signals). Better location accuracy, especially with respect to depth control is achievable in an earth where the velocity is depth-dependent (increasing with depth) than in one which is homogeneous. This chapter includes tables for 1982 that were not available in time for publication of the 1982 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1983. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1988 was estimated at $21.1 billion, an increase of $1.5 billion over the value for 1982. This is a reversal of last year&apos;s downturn in value from that of 1981, which was the only decrease noted since 1971; hence, an overall trend of increasing values has been maintained for 12 years, except for 1982. Although the reversal is a basis for cautious economic optimism, it is tempered by continued problems in the domestic mining industry: inadequate funds for capital investment and competition with other countries that have lower production costs. Output of metal commodities in 1983 increased for 8 out of 21 metals, and metal values, in general, increased for 9 of the metals. Output of nonmetal commodities was mixed, with 24 nonmetals showing increases, 20 showing decreases, and 2 unchanged. Nonmetal values were also mixed in 1982: 25 showed increases, 20 declined, and 1 was unchanged. Improvements in the international metals market have not been forthcoming because of the continued depressed prices for major metals. Governments in foreign producing countries have been concerned with maintaining employment and continuing foreign exchange flows through mineral exports. Consequently, the excess of supply in the face of shrinking demand brought downward pressure on metal prices in general, except for the precious metals. On the domestic front, this situation means U.S. mining companies must become even more cost efficient. The major trend in the mining industry in 1983 was to cut costs further, reduce or stabilize total production, reduce outlays for major capital equipment, modify existing systems and equipment, and streamline operations. Most of the accomplishments reported herein reflect this trend.

"In a cooperative study by the University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, diesel exhaust and mineral dust concentrations have been measured for aerosols generated in the laboratory and in five underground coal mines. Three mines utilized diesel-powered haulage equipment and two used all-electric equipment. Two source apportionment techniques have been applied to differentiate between the mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol concentrations measured. The first technique, using a micro-orifice, uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) for size selective sampling, is based on modeling aerosol size and the premise that the diesel exhaust portion of the aerosol is predominantly submicron and the mineral dust portion is mostly greater that one micrometer in size. The second technique, Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling, was used to referee the analysis of diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol concentrations from the size selective sampling results.The MOUDI size distribution data were modeled to obtain parameters describing the fine and course fractions of the sampled aerosol and to estimate the contributions to each mode from both mineral dust and diesel exhaust aerosol sources. The results showed the size distribution of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the modes occurring at 0.8 µm. Less than 5 pct of the coal mine diesel aerosol was found in the coarse size fraction. CMB analysis confirms the original premise for using aerosol size to separate diesel exhaust and mineral dust aerosol during sampling.Based on the results from the size selective sampling, a personal diesel aerosol sampler has been developed for measuring diesel aerosol mass concentrations. Th.is sampler uses an inertial impactor to size separate the respirable aerosol at 0.8 µm. All material less than 0.8 µm is collected on an after filter for subsequent gravimetric analysis."

Operating heavy construction equipment is often associated with elevated rates of low back discomfort (LBD). However, there have been few formal studies that dealt with evaluating controls that can reduce the LBD among these workers. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using a continuous passive lumbar motion system (CPLMS) in reducing low back discomfort among operators of heavy earthmoving equipment. The CPLMS is an additional seat support that has a lumbar support bladder and a pump to provide cyclic inflation and deflation. Two groups of operators were identified as potential subjects for this intervention study, the intervention group with a mean age of 41.2 years and experience of 9.7 years used the CPLMS, and the control group with a mean age of 37.5 years and experience of 7.6 years did not use the CPLMS. Body part discomfort surveys were collected from both groups. In addition, the intervention group completed a CPLMS preference survey. The body part discomfort survey was collected up to eight days at three different times of the day. Results from the body part discomfort survey showed a decreasing trend the longer the CPLMS was used, for both the upper and low back region. A decreasing trend for the low back was also found comparing morning to evening discomfort scores across the days when using the CPLMS. When compared to their regular seat, 54% of the operators felt very comfortable in using the CPLMS, 36% of them wanted one for their equipment, and 54% showed interest in experimenting with the CPLMS for a longer time period. Results from this study indicate that the use of a CPLMS can effectively reduce the low back discomfort experienced by operators of heavy construction equipment.
