In this study, thorium mineral that found in the complex ore deposit bearing bastnasite, fluorite, and barite from Eskisehir - Sivrihisar district has been tried to extract by using HCl and H2SO4 leaching. Ore sample of approximately 3 tons taken from the ore deposit has been homogenized in order to obtain composite samples by means of ore preparation techniques for experiments. Results of chemical analyses of composite samples are as given; 40.8% CaF2, 35.35% BaSO4, 2.01 Ce, 1.5% La, 0.39% and 0.1% Th. HCl and H2SO4 leaching processes have been performed to gain Th in the ore. For determining the optimum particle size, the samples have been ground under controlled conditions and brought to the sizes of 0.065, 0.2, 1 and 3 mm. Leaching experiments have been carried out in both HCl and H2SO4 acids without roasting and roasting at the temperature of 900°C for 1, 3 and 6 h retention times for all particle sizes determined before. In the experiments, the highest Th recoveries reached are as follows; 78.74% Th when H2SO4 and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 1 h roasting applied and 73.38% Th when HCl and 1 mm particle sized sample used, and 3 h roasting applied. This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues. Activated charcoal was used to adsorb excess collector species in the flotation pulp during cleaning stages After two stages cleaning of the rougher concentrate using starch as the depressant a copper concentrate assaying 21.2% Cu was obtained with 79.5% recovery while the tailings contained 0.01% Cu and metal losses were about 3%

It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from fluorite with fatty acid collectors because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface. A simplified flotation process using Pb-BHA complexes was developed to replace the energy-inefficient Petrov’s process of using a fatty acid, increasing the recovery of scheelite and reducing the cost. The relationship between surface chemical properties (crystal chemistry, solubility, and Zeta potential) of minerals and flotation by using a fatty acid or Pb-BHA complexes was studied in detail to provide new insights into the selective separation mechanism. The results indicate that the scheelite surface exposes more O atoms than Ca and that they are negatively charged due to the anisometric dissolution of Ca and WO4, which provides the possibility for separation using selective interfacial reaction. The FTIR and Zeta potential results indicate that both chemical and electrostatic adsorption play an important role in the adsorption of Pb-BHA complexes on the scheelite surface. The XPS results of the atomic composition and binding energies confirmed the presence of the adsorbed Pb-BHA complexes and that O and Ca may be the active adsorption sites. Therefore, scheelite was able to be collected by forming either a Ca-O-Pbcollector or W-O-Pb-collector (BHA). However, fluorite was only able to be collected by a fatty acid collector and colloidal [H2SiO3]n -, and a high temperature was needed improve the selective desorption of the adsorbed fatty acid collector by forming Ca-[H2SiO3]n - on the fluorite surface, resulting in serious problems in industry. However, the Pb-BHA complexes significantly contribute to improving the recovery of scheelite minerals, simplifying the flotation process, and circulation of the residual reagents and water. The new process has been applied in Shizhuyuan Mine, and improved the recovery by almost 10%.

In this paper High Pressure Grinding Rolls(HPGR) was utilized to pretreat CVRD southern specular hematite for enhancing the pelletization of the refractory hematite. The process parameters of HPGR, balling and firing were optimized, and the mechanism of HPGR was demonstrated by determining the surface activity by means of Blaine specific surface area tester, laser size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro calorimeter and pelletability index. It is shown that the pelletization of the refractory hematite was greatly improved. The drop strength of green balls increases from 3.4 times to 13.6 times from 0.5m height while the bentonite dosage decreases from 2.2% to 1.3%.The compressive strength of roasted pellets also reaches 2500N/pellet. The mechanism of the pretreatment of CVRD southern specular hematite concentrates by HPGR is revealed that the surface activity is improved by an increases in specific surface area and the amount of micron size fractions, and higher lattice deformation and defects due to the fractures occurring inside particles during static pressure comminution, resulting in more wetting enthalpy, higher pelletability index and good property of roasting.

Mineral selective flash roasting (Steiner process) in oxidizing atmosphere was tested successfully for the efficient low intensity magnetic separation of siderite from ankerite and other gangue minerals within the ore of the Steirische Erzberg, Austria. The calcium, magnesium and manganese containing siderite turns selectively into a ferromagnetic oxide phase while ankerite remains paramagnetic. The expulsion of CO2 increases the volume specific surface depending on the selected temperature. Unlike pure iron oxides absorbing SO2 below 530°C, the calcined siderite (enriched in the magnetic product of the Steiner process) acts as a sorbent for SO2 between 500 and 820°C. The effect was studied by thermogravimetric analysis and particle bed tests complemented with neutron thermo diffractometry (D20/ ILL). The energy input was simulated with the help of a tube furnace. The composition of the artificial combustion gas permeating the bed was close to that measured in pilot scale tests (6 % CO2, 12 % O2, 700 vpm SO2). The evaluation of data relating the SO2 variation in the off gas monitored by electrochemical cells to the actual phase composition revealed an intermediate ferrite phase as absorber. During the rapid decomposition in oxidizing atmosphere starting at 500°C the occurring siderite alters to a (CaO, MgO, MnO)Fe2O3 ferrite as an intermediate phase accompanied with sudden SO2 absorption. SO2 disintegrates the ferrite structure forming MgSO4 and MnSO4, taking Fe2O3 as a catalyst. Ankerite (enriched in the non magnetics of the Steiner process) starts to absorb at temperatures above 1000°C forming gypsum. The findings support the SO2 controlled operation of the Steiner process by ?autodesulfurisation?. It explains aspects of the SO2 implementation reactions within off gas recycling in Austrian sinterstrands. "Screening is an important means of size classification used on granular or particulate materials. The vibrating modes of screen separator have a great effect on the screening process. Elliptical vibration mode is a complex motion mode which gets the common characteristics of both linear and circular vibration modes. However, the fundamental motion and screen penetration of the particles on the elliptically vibrating screen deck are still poorly understood. A numerical study of the motion of particulates flow along an elliptically vibrating screen deck is presented by means of a three dimensional Discrete Element Method (3D-DEM). The motion characteristic of the particle flow is analyzed at a particle scale. The effects of vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle on the screening process are discussed. The results show that the particles average velocity increases linearly with the increase of vibration amplitude, throwing index and screen deck inclination angle, but decreases linearly with the increase of vibration direction angle. The screening efficiency is highest when the vibration amplitude, throwing index, vibration direction angle and screen deck inclination angle are 4.5 mm, 3.3, 40° and 6°, respectively. This work is helpful for developing a deep understanding of particle motion on the elliptically vibrating screen and for optimizing screen separator designs."

Blue dust is a high grade soft haematite material containing 96.14% Fe2O3 transformed into magnetite (Fe3O4), when it is subjected to planetary ball milling in the presence of iron powder as reducing reagent. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Laser particle size analyser have been employed to characterize various samples collected at various milling times to know the phase evolution, particle size distribution and morphology of particles. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the formation of magnetite phase at the optimum milling time of 40 hours. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) study demonstrates, that sample obtained at 40 hours of milling time exhibits saturation magnetisation of 14.757 emu/g whereas the starting material used in this study shows only 1.0425 emu/g. This project was specifically aimed at using increased acceleration separation, as a method to optimize the recovery of gold in an ore body mainly consisting of hematite where the specific gravity of gold is much higher in comparison to the carrying material, making it possible to separate gold from other materials like silica, base metals and their oxides, usually associated with gravitation-gold-recovery-processes. The ore body investigated in this project originated from a gold reef containing a large portion of gold locked inside the gold pyrite complexes, which was mined and treated in a conventional way. After gold extraction, the material was pumped to a tailings dump and the gold extraction of this dump was investigated. In order to assemble a concentration plant setup, the head grade and size distribution of the dump and bulk sample were determined accurately. Chemical analysis and mineralogical examination were done on a representative sample of the bulk sample, to determine the chemical composition of the material. The results obtained thereof were evaluated and a pilot plant was configured. A bulk sample was processed in the pilot plant and the results were evaluated. The results at optimum acceleration forces applied, resulted in a recovery of 5% of the mass, with a gold concentrate of 90 g/t Au, which represented 58% recovery of the gold. The hematite with high specific gravity as main phase positively influenced the high acceleration separation process. It proved that if the specific gravity of particles in a suspension were increased, high acceleration separation could be applied effectively to separate much smaller particle sizes.

Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

The problem (very old) of processing by flotation, the fine (“F”, 38-13 µm) and ultrafines (“UF”, < 13 µm) mineral particles continues to be a major technical challenge in the area of mineral processing. Many different processes have been proposed over the last three decades but, unfortunately, most of them have not found practical applications yet. This paper describes some advances in flotation research in fines (“F”, 38-13 µm) and ultrafines (“UF”, < 13 µm) mineral recovery by two different techniques. Extender flotation (EF) and flotation with bubbles with a wide size distribution-SB of copper sulphide ore fines (1 % Cu) were compared with a “standardised” (STD) mill laboratory procedure. Comparative evaluation was made through concentrate grade and recovery (size by size results included), “true” flotation recoveries and process kinetics. Copper porphyry samples, containing about 1/3 of the mass and about 37 % of the total copper content in the fines and ultrafines fractions were used. In the EF tests diesel-in-water emulsions were used as an extra reagent, added after the collector and frother addition. In SB tests, drawing air through an aspiration nozzle, directly in the pulp, generated bubbles sized about 50-200 µm. Both techniques yielded higher metallurgical efficiencies than the mill standard but better results were obtained with the extender flotation, with emulsified diesel oil (90 gt-1). Concentrate recoveries were of the order of 85-90 % (84 % in standard conditions), 14-17 % Cu grade (15 % Cu in the standard) and 3.5-4.5 min-1 for the Klimpel rate constant (3 min-1 in the standard). Size by size and true flotation results proved that metallurgical and kinetic gains, obtained with the two techniques, might be attributed to fines and ultrafines enhancement. Data obtained are discussed in terms of physical and physicochemical parameters related to aggregation and capture (of particles by bubbles) phenomena and the practical potential of these techniques are envisaged. The following figure shows size-by-size copper recoveries results, after classification of produced concentrates and tailings using micro-sieves. Results clearly show that flotation of the F and UF fractions is highly improved with injection of small bubbles (SB) and with the addition of an extender collector. It is believed that the techniques presented here will establish shortly a new basis for the flotation enhancement of the F and UF, aimed at solving a very old problem. This work is being continued, now at pilot plant scale, and results will be published en the near future.

A high-grade fluorite ore is converted into hydrogen fluoride to produce many kinds of materials containing fluorine. Recently, it is becoming necessary to use low-grade fluorite ore due to the depletion of high grade ore. The low-grade fluorites usually have impurities such as SiO2, P, CaCO3 and arsenic. The most impurities such as SiO2, CaCO3 and P can be removed by using flotation method. However, the removal of arsenic is difficult, and the arsenic contamination decreases the hydrogen fluoride production percentage. The novel technologies for processing low-grade fluorite ore are urgently needed, in order to lower the arsenic concentration to less than 100 mg/kg. In this study, the removal of arsenic from low-grade fluorite ore has been investigated by means of an autogenous grinding using tower mill in sulfuric acid aqueous solution and 0.3 mm zirconia balls in water. The nano grinding in water can prevent the dissolution of 0.3 mm size zirconia balls as grinding media by sulfuric acid solution. Experimental results showed that the arsenic concentration was reduced from 260 mg/kg to 90 mg/kg and CaF2 recovery reached 90% by this process.

The adsorption of heterocyclic collectors such 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO), 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and their derivatives on pyrite form a basis in understanding the flotation reactivity that may be applicable in a wide range of sulphide minerals. This study uses a computational and experimental approach to determine the heat of adsorption of MBT, MBO, MBI and modified MBT collectors onto pyrite surfaces. Computational calculations found that the adsorption energies were in the order: MBO > MBI > MBT. The heterocyclic collectors were adsorbed in their thiolate form on the surface. In the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the MBT adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur atom, while MBO and MBI adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur and N atoms onto the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted, where the MBT exocyclic sulphur atom bridged on the 5- coordinated Fe and surface 2-coordinated sulphur atoms, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. In the case of MBO and MBI, dissociation of the exocyclic sulphur atom from the collector occurred with subsequent interaction with the surface 5-cordinated Fe and 2-coordinated S atoms. This resulted in the collector carbon atom adsorbing on the surface 2-coordinated S atom, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The adsorption of the modified MBT was found to be more exothermic than the MBT, which showed that introduction of a –CS2 group on the exocyclic sulphur atom improved the affinity of MBT on the surface, and was thus a better flotation collector. The computational results were supported by experimental enthalpy of adsorption measurements and microflotation tests. The chemistry of the heterocyclic thioamides is complicated by the fact that they can exist in a number of tautomeric and ionic forms at different pH’s. This is discussed in relation to the flotation and calorimetric data.

Flotation of halite?new, recently begun to be developed method of processing water-soluble minerals. In the paper the results of studies of the new directions of the application of halite flotation are represented. Studies on the flotation separation of halite and sylvite in the salt solutions of different composition, showed the possibility of the halite flotation realization not only in the carnallite brine (content of salts: MgCl2 25.5% ~ 26.0 %, chlorides of potassium and sodium 5.5% ~ 6.0%), but in the sylvinite brine, which contains 10.5% ~ 10.8% KCl and 20.5% ~ 21% NaCl. On the basis obtained results are carried out experiences on the halite flotation from samples of the converted products of sylvinite ores by flotation method and by the method of the electrostatic separation. It is shown that in all cases it is possible to accomplish effective and selective recovery of halite. The halite recovery into the foam product of flotation makes 80% ~ 90% with an increase in the content of KCl in the cell product of flotation in comparison with a composition of flotation feed: - from the product after the electrostatic separation of ore ? from 76% KCl to 95% ~ 97% KCl; - from the small fraction of ore (- 0.25 + 0 mm) ? from 30% KCl to 60% ~ 64% KCl; - from middlings (intermediate products) of sylvite flotation from 16% ~ 31% KCl to 45% ~ 80% KCl. An increase in the molecular weight of alkylmorpholines increases the selectivity of the flotation separation of halite and sylvite. Halite recovery from small size fraction of ore or/and middling of sylvite flotation with the sub-sequent joint filtration halite product and tails of sylvite flotation allows to reduce considerably expenses for manufacture potash chloride from Pilot-industrial tests for the first time confirmed the possibility of the effective halite flotation in the saturated solutions of chlorides of potassium and sodium (sylvinite brine).

"In this paper, experiences from Polish non-ferrous metals ores enrichment plants in the copper and blende concentrates quality improvement are discussed. The blende concentrate being produced in ZGH Boleslaw S.A., with Zn content of about 54,5% is characterized by the relatively high magnesium content reaching a level of 1% resulting from the dolomite presence, while for the zinc production by electrowinning a concentrate in which magnesium content should not exceed 0,3% is required. The implemented new technology for the quality improvement of blende concentrate is based on the leaching of zinc concentrate with sulfuric acid aimed at dissolving of the contained dolomite, and then flotation of the leached concentrate. It allows to obtain a concentrate with magnesium content below 0,1% at the simultaneously increased zinc content to about 57,5%. In the paper, laboratory tests results on the development of optimal flotation flowsheet for the gypsum removal and the industrial tests results concerning the process optimization of this flotation are discussed. In turn, the copper concentrate being produced in Polish copper ore enrichment plants KGHM PM S.A., is characterized by the increased organic carbon content - above 8%. It creates problems with the smelting of this concentrate because of difficulties with the heat removal derived from the combustion of organic carbon in the flash smelting process. The implementation of segregating flotation to the industrial practice allows the effective production of two concentrates with the differentiated chemical compositions - a concentrate with increased copper content and reduced organic carbon content for the flash smelting process, and a concentrate with lower copper content and increased organic carbon content for the shaft smelting process. In the paper, conditions of the segregating flotation and the achieved results are described."

It is customary to use more than one stage of flotation to obtain an acceptable level of separation of valuables. Flotation circuit design is usually accomplished by applying empirical rules which usually results in operations not working at their optimum conditions. Given the capabilities of genetic algorithms (GA) in finding an optimum solution in a very disturbed search spaces, they can be used to obtain the desired flotation circuit configuration. In flotation circuit configuration and optimization problem, a combination of metallurgical parameters such as yield and concentrate ash content could be used as the fitness function for the genetic algorithm. The multi-objective nature of the problem justified to use Pareto method to arrive at a set of solutions. The appropriate configuration based on technical or economical considerations could then be chosen. To obtain the fitness function for any given configuration, it is necessary to model every flotation stage. The proposed method was used to find the optimum circuit configuration for a coal washing plant. The objective was to arrive at the highest yield while producing a concentrate with a certain ash content (< 11%). The feed to the flotation circuit was characterized based on the size fractions and their flotation rate constants. Results showed that with a 95% confidence, the absolute difference between the modeled and measured values were 2.9-5.5% for yield and 0.4-1.1% for concentrate ash content. When the proposed GA-based circuit configuration was implemented in the plant, the yield increased from the original value of 57.6% to 65.7% while producing concentrate ash content (10.9%) within acceptable limits. By adding one stage to the current three-stage circuit, it was predicted that the yield could further increase by 3.8% while keeping the quality of the concentrate within the appropriate level. "The effect of various polymers, including: anionic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polystyrene sulfonate (PSS), humic acids (HA) and non-ionic hydroxypropyl cellulose, on the wettability of Athabasca bitumen was evaluated through dynamic contact angle measurements using the captive bubble technique. The tests were carried out as a function of pH at a constant ionic strength (0.01 mol/L sodium chloride). The evolution of the three-phase contact angle between the solution, bitumen and an air bubble was followed as a function of time over a period of ~6 minutes. The contact angle data were modelled using a first-order kinetic equation. The results were analyzed in terms of the initial contact angle, the evolution rate constant, and the steady-state contact angle value. In the case of anionic polymers, a pronounced decrease in the initial contact angle value was observed at pH 3. Under acidic conditions, there was no significant effect of CMC observed on the steady-state contact angle value but PSS and HA significantly decreased the steady-state contact angle value. At pH 8.5. the anionic polymers did not affect the wettability of the bitumen surface but they significantly decreased the contact angle evolution rate. These results suggested that CMC is not capable of permanently lowering the hydrophobicity of bitumen, and the polymer only slowed down the evolution of the contact angle to the steady-state value. The results also showed that polystyrene sulfonate and humic acids were capable of making bitumen hydrophilic but only under acidic conditions. Only hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) produced a large decrease in the steady-state contact angle under alkaline conditions (pH 8.5). The kinetics of contact angle evolution in the presence of HPC was also drastically lowered. The results were discussed in terms of the chemical composition of the polymers and their different affinities towards the bitumen surface."

The flocculation and dewatering behaviour of kaolinite (non swelling) and smectite (swelling) clay dispersions has been investigated using hydrolysable metal ions Mn(II) and Ca(II) and anionic polyacrylamide-acrylate copolymer (PAM) at pH 7.5 and 10.5. A pH-dependent, specific metal ion adsorption behaviour, accompanied by a marked reduction in particle zeta potential and slurry shear yield stress, was observed to have a profound influence on the colloid stability of both types of clays. Due to the differences in the cation exchange capacity, the smectite clay dispersion required a higher amount of metal ions than kaolinite dispersion to produce similar effects. The adsorption density of the anionic PAM at the negatively charged clay particle surfaces correlated well with metal ion hydrolysis and adsorption behaviour, all of which had a strong effect on slurry settling rate and extent of consolidation. At pH 7.5 where Mn(II) ions hydrolyse, metal ion and flocculant adsorption densities were both greater in the presence of Mn(II) than Ca(II) ions. At pH 10.5, however, where Ca(II) ions begins to hydrolyse, higher adsorption densities were observed for Ca(II) ions in comparison with Mn(II) ions, as the latter hydrolysed completely and precipitated. The metal ion mediated flocculant adsorption led to improved hydrogen bond driven particle bridging and facilitated charge neutralisation flocculation mechanisms which significantly enhanced the dewaterability of both clay dispersions.

It is very clear that these issues are reaching unparalleled scale and complexity. Cost efficiency and corporate social responsibility are the two primary drivers for the mining industry today. The current challenges facing the industry include: ? Due to deterioration of quality of ores, the scale of operations has become humongous which necessitates high degree of automation and remote operations ? Scarcity of skilled manpower and the necessity to minimize employment of humans at unsafe locations ? Automation of routine activities, improving the efficiency of operations and reducing the cost of production ? Land, water and energy have become scarce in most of the resource rich regions In the current macroeconomic conditions, it is obvious that the industry is under tremendous pressure and it is imperative that the industry embraces sustainability, enhanced energy efficiency, and improved resource allocation. Closely related sectors like energy and utilities have set an example by acknowledging the need to alter their business practices to meet the essentials of sustainability, adoption of new operating models, policy and regulation structures. There is a need to continuously optimize the operations across the entire process value chain as well as across geographies in order to meet the market demand while dealing with supply chain constraints. The goals of optimization could be enhancement in productivity, reduction of production costs, carbon footprint, etc. The gamut of operations is vast, starting from exploration to mining, mineral processing, smelting, refining, casting, rolling (deformation processing), heat treatment, and finally manufacturing of industrial products / components. Advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) in combination with modeling and optimization tools have made it possible to address these issues in a quantitative manner based on real life data. Manufacturing industry, for example, has successfully leveraged these technologies (ERP, PLM, MES, APC, etc.) to enhance productivity and quality. In this presentation, I would like to illustrate the benefits that could be derived by implementing ICT-leveraged solutions available today for the mining industries. I will focus on the following recent technological developments in the context of their applications in the mining and minerals industries: Mobility technologies: The industry is looking for strategically sustainable solutions that fit the working profile of mining engineers and which provide up-to-date information in real time. Mobile applications for iPhones and iPads are gaining popularity, which is helping mining engineers to work on-line as well as off-line. Mobility technologies have made it possible to provide data anywhere and anytime in a form you prescribe. This enables proactive responses to changing dynamics of the marketplace. For example, a plant engineer can access information about any critical process equipment, monitor its performance and do the needful as and when needed. Similarly, scheduling of operations can be optimized based on the market demand and on the availability of raw materials, labor, and status of equipment.

"The article highlights the new procedure of choosing special methods of disintegration for very complicated rare ores. Especially, there is a complex approach to criteria of comparing different types of crashing machines. Criteria are as follows: degree of crashing, degree of grinding, degree of slime creation and the new creations criteria for selection. The procedure is tested on tantalium and zelestinium ore. A new methods was shown the preference impact crashing machine MD-7 for zelestinium ore. In product of crashing 0,050 mm size are 9.4 %, 0,005 mm size – 2.5 %.This is gut result, and show the best indexes of slime creation. The check of the proposed new methods was done when comparing the crushing of tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit in cone inertial and centrifugal impact crushers and roller press. A research was conducted different crashing machines under laboratory and semi-industrial conditions. Different operation modes of crushers were also checked. The comparison of the crushing selectivity criterion and degree of crashing showed that the centrifugal impact crusher (CC) and roller press (RP) has the lower indexes than the cone inertial crusher (CIC). Degrees of crashing for different crashing machines are:centrifugal impact crusher – 10.1;roller press – 10.8;cone inertial crusher – 14.2. The crusher CC the selection criterion is 0,632 units, RP – 0.730, where as for the crusher CIC – 0.848 units. The best crushing mode for the crusher CIC-300? is as follows: turning angle of debalance is 0°, peripheral speed of a cone rotation – 1420 r.p.m, specific energy consumption- 4.99 kW*t/t. Crusher CIC-300? is the best for tantalium ores of the Otboynoe deposit. The new methodic are verification.INTRODUCTION Rare metal concentration circuits are complex, energy-intensive, and costly. The reasons for this include the multimetal nature of the rare metal ores, their volatile material composition and low grade. That is why careful selection of ore preparation circuits is of great importance for minimizing the energy inputs and maximizing the liberation of the valuable minerals. Recent research (Khopunov, 2011, Gazaleeva, 2015) has demonstrated that the most efficient comminution processes available to the mineral processing industry are selective disintegration, crushing and grinding, allowing to liberate the mineral particles along the cleavage in the comminution process. These methods are indispensable for the processing of finely disseminated refractory ores prone to slime formation. Many rare metal ores found in Russia are of this type."

"Over the past few years CSIRO Minerals has been conducting research aimed at developing a continuous copper converting process to replace the traditional two-stage batch process that is currently used to produce blister copper. Sirosmelt type reactors and calcium-ferrite (lime-based) slags have been used rather than the conventional iron silicate slags. The research work has now been extended to focus on the development of a single-stage continuous copper making process (so-called direct copper converting) in which copper concentrates are converted to low-sulfur blister copper in a single step, that is the smelting and converting steps occur in one continuous stage.One feature of the direct copper converting process is that copper losses to the slag phase can be high, meaning the slag produced needs to be treated to recover the copper value. The feasibility of the whole copper making process will most likely depend on the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the copper recovery stage. Flotation has been identified as the most economical option to recover the copper from direct copper converting slags where it has been estimated that a copper recovery from the slag of above 90% is required to make the overall single stage copper making process economically feasible.A limited series of laboratory batch flotation tests was conducted on a suite of calcium-ferrite-based slags made in laboratory smelting trials. Copper sulfide concentrates from MIM were used as feed-stocks. The objectives of this work were to develop a robust flotation process to maximise the copper recovery and iron rejection from slags made in the process, and to establish operating conditions for future continuous flotation pilot plant trials.The slags treated included a reduced low copper slag, an oxidised high copper slag composite, and a very reduced low copper self-pulverising slag. The copper content of the slags varied from 2.9% to 14% Cu and the CaO/Fe ratio varied between 0.30 and 0.54. In general, the higher the copper content the more oxidised the slag. The copper was present as metallic copper, oxide copper and copper-calcium ferrite phases with the phase mix related to smelting conditions. The slags were crushed, ground, wet-screened at 355 or 210 µm to remove coarse metallic particles of copper, and floated at natural pH (about pH 11) using reagents and conditions appropriate for the selective recovery of the copper phases. Reagent additions were typically 200 g/t KEX and 500 g/t Na2S.9H2O and the grind size was generally a P80 of about 40 µm."
