"Resistivity measurements of minerals in the laboratory are commonly made with a low DC voltage source. Common test voltages specified in the ASTM Standard D257 are 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000, 10000 and 15000 V, however 100 and 500 V are the most frequently used. Resistivity results obtained in the laboratory have been used to infer the electrical behaviour of minerals undergoing electrostatic separation. However because the voltages employed in electrostatic separation in the plant are of the order of thousands of volts, typically greater than 15000 V, whether the laboratory results are applicable as a predictor of plant performance is a critical question. It is unclear whether resistivity values taken at a low voltage are characteristic of those seen in electrostatic separation, in which the minerals are exposed to a much higher voltage. No definitive answer could be found in the literature.In this work, the resistivities of zircon, rutile and ilmenite were measured in a corona field for the first time. The measurement principle was based on a technique developed to measure fly ash resistivity in electrostatic precipitators, however the test apparatus and findings are novel.Resistivities of rutile and zircon were found to be easy to measure. The values measured in a corona field were several orders of magnitude less than those obtained with a dc voltage of 100 V. Evidence of back corona was observed with zircon. When the voltage drop was greater than the sample layer could withstand a localised electrical stress developed, resulting in a voltage breakdown, at which point a sudden surge of corona current (back corona) was detected in the sample layer. Rutile, on the other hand, exposed to the same conditions as that of zircon (i.e. same temperature and applied voltage) did not exhibit any sign of back corona. Its resistivity across the range of test voltages (14 to 33 kV) remained fairly constant."

"Transformation of diamond into graphite was investigated in the region of diamond metastability under the action of media chemically active relative to carbon in the temperature range from 770 K up to 2200 K and pressure range from 10-3 Pa up to 3 GPa/IV VIII group metals of periodic system and oxygen were used as media chemically active relative to diamond.Methods of electron diffraction, chemical analyses, emission spectroscopy and X-ray phase analyses were used for determination of the reaction products.It was found that in the region of diamond metastability the stage of catalytic phase transformation of diamond into graphite took place during the interaction between diamond and metal. Metal reduce activation energy for transition of diamond into graphite from 109,4 kcal/mole to 77,4 kcal/mole.Kinetic of phase transformation of diamond into graphite was investigated.Pressure does not considerably influence on the rate of phase transformation of diamond into graphite in the presence of transition metals."

"Preliminary tests were done to determine whether comminution by electric-pulse disaggregation, or EPD (cf. Rudashevsky et al; 1995), was more effective than using conventional crushing for Merensky Reef ore. A hand sample of the Merensky Reef was sawn in two: then one sub-sample was comminuted to – 2 mm using E-PD at the University of Minnesota, and the other sub-sample was crushed to –2 mm using a conventional jaw crusher at CANMET.The products of the electric-pulse disaggregation and jaw crusher were fractionated by sieving and by a separation using a heavy liquid with a specific gravity of 3.3, because the proportion of platinum-group minerals (PGM) and sulphides to silicate minerals is very low. Thus, four mineral separates were produced: –2000 + 833 µm, -833 +208 µm, -208-µm float and -208-µm sink. All the mineral separates were studied by image analysis (Lastra et al; 1998). The main objective was to determine the liberation of gangue (silicate minerals), chromite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and PGM. In the case of the PGM, a specific image analysis program was written to search and measure these minerals."

"The purpose of the work is complex processing of sulphide-magnetite ores with the separation of iron into iron concentrate, copper and noble metals into copper concentrate.The work shows the research results of the material composition of the sulfide-magnetite ore in the South part of the Peschanskoye deposit. According to the research results it is found that ore contains 0.59% of copper, 66% of which is related to chalcopyrite; 39.9% of iron, 81% of which is magnetite and 3.87% is sulfur, 42% of which is associated with pyrrhotite, 65% of which is a monoclinic modification. According to the results of the mineralogical analysis, it is found that the main iron-containing mineral in the ore under study is magnetite, the content of which is 45%. In addition to magnetite, iron is found in carbonates, pyroxenes, amphiboles, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. The main copper mineral in the sample is chalcopyrite; covellite, chalcosine, bornite have a subordinate value. The total content of copper minerals in the sample is about 1%. The processing technology provides the three-stage grinding of the ore to a size of 65% of the class-71 µm; a cycle of copper flotation; a cycle of pyrrhotite flotation; wet magnetic separation of flotation hosts. The following optimal parameters are established for the ore under study: the alkalinity of the slurry is 250-280 g/m3 of free calcium oxide in the liquid phase of the slurry; the duration of the main copper flotation is 20 min; the consumption of butyl potassium xanthate is 20 g/t; the consumption of the foam generator T-92 is 15 g/t; the consumption of copper sulfate for the activation of pyrrhotite is 300 g/t; the magnetic field strength is 1500 Oersteds.A complex flotation-magnetic technology for the enrichment of sulfide-magnetite ore has been developed in the laboratory in order to produce a copper concentrate containing 21.6% of copper with 91.7% extraction and an iron concentrate with 66.5% of iron mass fraction and 1.2% of sulfur with an extraction of iron into the concentrate of 87.9%."

"To remain competitive in an open market, mining companies are more and more requested to optimise their complex and highly multivariate processes. The increasing amount of process data, brought about by intensive use of instrumentation and the progress in computer data acquisition, enhances the need for more and more powerful and robust tools for the analysis and modelling of the process data. Now, with the emergence of multivariate data analysis (MDA) techniques, on-line clustering of mineral process behaviour is possible and could help in the extraction of valuable process operation indicators. MDA can be used in different mineral processes such as flotation, grinding, smelting etc. In this paper, the focus will be on grinding process as it is the one of the most costly node in the mineral processing scheme (i.e. power consuming) and it is a highly multivariable process. Particularly for primary grinding mills (SAG/AG), more instrumentation outputs and more powerful and significant process indicators are needed for efficient control and optimisation.MDA is a novel approach suitable for understanding mineral process behaviour compared to the traditionally approaches based on empirical and phenomenological modelling. Multivariate techniques can be used for several purposes. In this paper, the following objectives will be addressed:operation diagnosis: Shift differentiation and operation test differentiation can be showed by using MDA tools such as principle component analysis and factorial discriminant analysis.operation performance monitoring: operation regimes can be evaluated by clustering based on an economic criterion performance such as costs, tonnage, product quality, profit, etcIdentification of operation behaviour (monitoring) and selection of drift correction trajectories (control):MDA can be used to identify periods of unusual or abnormal process behaviour and to diagnose, if it is possible, causes for such behavior."

"Waste streams, such as acid mine drainage, are often characterised by low pH values and high concentrations of heavy metals, dissolved solids, calcium and sulphates. Although lime remediation effectively removes most of the heavy metals as hydroxides, it is less effective at lowering levels of sulphates. Various methods of removing sulphates from effluents exist, such as precipitation with lime, precipitation with barium salts, co-precipitation with calcium carbonate, reverse osmosis, and ion exchange. Mintek developed a chemical precipitation (SAVMIN) process to treat acid mine drainage, which entails the addition of lime to precipitate the metal hydroxides, and the subsequent formation (precipitation) of calcium sulphoaluminate or ettringite. The key to the viability of the new technology lies in the correct use, regeneration and recycling of Al(OH)3 used to precipitate the ettringite. The water produced by this process is suitable for disposal to watercourses or for agricultural, domestic or industrial consumption. No brines are produced as the salts are converted to solid hydroxides, gypsum and calcium carbonate.The SAVMIN process has been tested successfully during several laboratory scale operations, and during two pilot plant operations at Stilfontein Goldmine for Anglogold and Navigation Plant, Witbank for Anglocoal. During the pilot plant campaign at Navigation Plant, metal and mineral precipitation was achieved with lime addition. The sulphate concentration in the water was reduced from 2136 mg/L to an average value of 102 mg/L and the calcium concentration was reduced from 727 mg/L to an average value of 70mg/L.The SAVMIN process generates a number of different waste streams including metal hydroxide sludge from neutralisation, gypsum sludge from the gypsum crystallisation steps, and calcite sludge from carbonation. The metal hydroxide sludge is composed of Mg, Ca, Mn and Fe hydroxide, and could be disposed of on a slimes dam. Gypsum sludge was greater than 99% CaSO4.2H2O. This gypsum could be used for dump or road capping, underground backfilling, production of wallboard and cement. The calcite sludge is pure CaCO3, which is recycled back to the neutralisation stage."

"Energy balance modeling has recently been shown to be a competent tool in the estimation of SAG mill discharge rheology. Work performed by van Drunick and Moys (2001) validated the ability of an energybalance filter to estimate the slurry density from an operating SAG mill. The importance of rheological data is highlighted by several authors who show the effects on load behaviour and thus mill performance. Energy balance models were developed to account for the dynamic energies in the mill discharge sump. The models then made it possible to infer the mill discharge density. A sampling campaign was performed and the errors from the sump energy balance were within tolerable limits.Since the initial results were published, it has been decided to further develop the modeling techniques in order to focus on balancing the energies around the entire mill. The critical measurements for the energy balance will be the temperatures of all the streams entering and leaving the mill, including energy losses to the environment. Metso’s OCS© (Optimising Control System) currently controls the 3 SAG mills at Anglogold’s Mponeng Gold Plant (South Africa). The OCS has built-in Kalman filtering tools to effectively handle variances and noise in the models and the mill circuit data respectively. The new models are therefore constructed in the OCS platform, and will be run in parallel with Metso’s current modeling and filtering systems. The work is a collaborative effort between Anglogold, the University of the Witwatersrand and Metso. The benefits of energy modeling, compared to mass modeling, are that energy data are more accurately measurable than mass data. The inferred mill parameters can therefore be improved provided that a competent set of models is produced to process the (accurate) thermal measurements."

"Dry coal dressing was popular during the 1950’s and 60’s in many parts of the world. The devices mainly used were air jigs and air tables.The increase in ash and moisture content of run-of-mine coals due to the wide advanced mechanisation of mining methods during and after this period led to that pneumatic devices being unable to treat run-of mine coals with the desired efficiency. Since the 1960’s almost all new coal preparation plants have been based on wet processes that are highly efficient in terms of coal recovery and their ability to handle damp and sticky run-of-mine coals. (Frankland, 1995)However, water is becoming increasingly costly and the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern. There would be significant cost savings and a lower total energy consumption if coal could be cleaned dry. Efficient dry coal treatment would be an interesting solution in desert, arid or cold areas.In Germany one dry coal dressing plant is in operation. This is the last operating dry coal dressing plant existing in Europe. The actual technical standard of dry coal dressing has been analysed during test-work and sampling in this plant (Saar Region in Germany). The process and the advantages and disadvantages are presented. The plants problems are low efficiency in the fine fraction –6 mm and the coarse fraction +30 mm and a low overall throughput as well as the lack of an automatic process control system. The separation results in the medium size fractions between +6 and -30 mm are excellent"

"In flotation practice, a good recovery of minerals largely depends on the degree to which the valuable minerals have been liberated from the associated gangue during the grinding process. Therefore, a regular measurement of the degree of liberation can provide data for the assessment of the quality of separation and predicts the effect of changes in the grinding-classifying circuit on flotation process. Generally, the standard procedure for measuring the degree of liberation requires the preparation of polished sections - a time consuming operation that also has the disadvantage of providing an overestimated number of free particles because of the stereological nature of produced samples.The present work is an alternative approach to avoid these miscalculations and establish a system of control for fluorite flotation plants. The system deals no only with the state of liberation but also the dynamic behavior of individuals particles and mineral components within the grinding-classifying and flotation circuits. It involves methods such as sieving, x-ray diffraction analysis, study of polished sections and microscopic counting of preliminarily sieved minerals particles from a fluorite processing plant, randomly dispersed on a glass slide, but not embedded in a resin mounting medium. If a complete information on the textural properties of minerals in the ore (including its mineral components distribution) can be obtained through x-ray diffraction analysis and study of polished sections, the microscopic counting is used to determinate with enough accuracy the mineral liberation, estimate the grade of fluorite ore and products, determinate the deportment and approximate recovery of individuals particles and mineral components within the investigated circuit. For a count of 100-1000 particles in each n-size range, the counting method was found to be a particularly reliable and less time consuming operation that could substitute the chemical analysis of fluorite ore for an estimate of the grade:"

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. "Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this due to higher solar cell efficiencies, larger and thinner wafers, more extensive recycling of waste material and new routes for the production of silicon feedstock. The raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. This may favour increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar cell production chain.SOLAR CELL PRODUCTION CHAIN SCENARIOSThe major problem concerning solar cells is the production costs. Electricity produced from fossil fuels and hydropower plants are currently much cheaper than the electricity produced from solar cells. Also, limited availability of silicon feedstock for the production of crystalline silicon solar cells is considered a major threat to the further growth of the PV industry. The present route for solar silicon feedstock goes from quartz, through metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) and to electronic-grade silicon (EG-Si). The reject from the EG-Si production are further processed into wafers and solar cells. This situation is not satisfying, however, because it has created a silicon feedstock shortage and a PV energy price that is not competitive in a large scale.Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. Also, the future silicon ""feedstock"" is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon, as it is today. There will probably be a more direct solargrade silicon route, excluding the very expensive electronic-grade silicon ""detour"". Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain"

"In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

The Republic of Tajikistan has large mercury-antimony deposit. The Republic takes the second place in the countries of the CIS by having antimony recourses or the fourth place in the world. Recently, on the mine bottom horizons the resources of gold were found. Gold in the data ore is submitted as nanosize particles. Results of ores enrichment of bottom horizons of Djijikrut deposit are obtained by a method of flotation. The flow sheet includes the rougher flotation, two scavenging flotation and two cleaner flotation. As a result of enrichment of ore, the mercury-antimony concentrate with the contents of 51.5% of antimony and recovery 90.3% from ore with the content of mercury of 3.5% was received. The investigation of thallium, selenium, and tellurium distributions on products of enrichment was carried out. The most effective reagents are a mixture of oksafore and butyl xanthogenate. While applying this mixture of reagents it is possible to refuse of the use of activator - nitrate lead. The behavior of gold is in details investigated during enrichment. To collective flotation concentrate is extracted only 30% of gold. The basic quantity of gold concentrates in tailings of flotation and is not taken by existing traditional methods. The alternative innovative technology of gold extraction was created. Various methods of roasting of a collective mercury - antimony concentrate oxidizing and reducing are investigated. Vacuum distillation of concentrate allocation in serial sublimates mercury and antimony was designed. In the received calcine concentrates gold. At additional roasting of a calcine up to 900°? concentration of gold makes 30.6 g/t. The offered innovational technology in a complex allows to process ores and concentrates unique mercury-antimony?gold bearing raw material. "Two areas are involved in the research work of the comminution process (crushing and grinding). The first one involves the changes of the size class distribution values that are definded by the differential equations in the function of the ore property and working conditions. The second area involves the comminution of the different levels in order to optimize the working parameters and to decrease the operational costs in the grinding process.We have studied, in detail, the possibility of functioning the crusher at the maximal loading, over 4500 kN, ball mills with diameters larger than 5.0 m and semiautogenous mills with diameters larger than 10.0 m.Using the computers, we have achieved the maximal loading range of the crusher, over Fc ? 4500 kN in the crushing process. In the grinding process, using the adequate differential equations in the automation process, we have established the correlation between the pulp mass capacity in the mill, pulp dencity, ore fineness in the pulp and recirculating ore charge.With the appopriate text, equations and graphs, this paper shows the results of our several years research work in the laboratory and in the ore comminution plant of Majdanpek Copper Mine."

A study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the hovering velocity and the particle settling velocity. The experiments were carried out in a water medium on five materials ranging in density from 1.070 to 4.000 kg/m3. Analysis of the results with allowance for the distribution of stream velocities over the cross section of the pipe revealed that the final settling velocity of the particles was equal to their local hovering velocity (on the stream axis), and not to the average velocity of vertical flow as is generally believed. It therefore follows that the kinetic structure of the stream must be taken into account when constructing theoretical models of the process for purposes of computation. In addition, the optimal stream velocity is not always equal to the hovering velocity and in fact is governed by other factors as well. Illustration is provided by the results of a study conducted in a vertical cascade classifier comprising eleven identical stages. The feed material was introduced at each stage successively beginning with the topmost (i* = 1 ) and ending with the lowermost (i* = 11). First, the stream velocity that yields optimum separation conditions at each stage of the cascade (i.e. k=50%, k being the yield of a given size class in the fines for a single stage) was sought. Subsequently the conditions of optimal separation for the instrument as a whole were determined (i.e. F(x) = 50%, F(x) being the yield of a given size class for the entire instrument). The results of the study are presented in the table.

"In water treatment, flocculation or coagulation with aluminium or ferric salts has been widely used for many years to remove natural organic matter (NOM), including humic acids. However, the adsorption of NOM to aluminium hydroxide flocs during conventional coagulation/flocculation processes is very complex, with the flocculation of aluminium hydroxide particles and the adsorption of NOM molecules on flocs occurring simultaneously. Any effect on the surface characteristics and micro-structures of the humic acids and aluminium hydroxides could affect the adsorption efficiency.It has been widely observed that if a reaction system (liquid-liquid or liquid-solid) is exposed to an ultrasound field, under appropriate conditions, a variety of physical (emulsification, aggregation/flocculation) or chemical (the production of radical and exited species; single electrotransfer) actions may be activated. Though the ultrasound effects have been used in biological and chemical decontamination in many conventional environmental protection practices, the idea to explore the ultrasound effects in the removal of humic acids by preformed aluminium hydroxide flocs is relatively new. In this paper, the effect of an in-situ ultrasonication on removal of the humic acids extracted from the acidification fermentation of lignocellulosic residues, by a preformed aluminium hydroxide, was evaluated; the effect of ultrasonication on the surface complexation of the humic acids with the preformed aluminium hydroxides was investigated."

Establishing reagent dosing strategies for new ore bodies has traditionally involved a combination of experience and empirical experimentation using standard laboratory tests. The grade and recovery data resulting from these lab tests have historically been used as direct indicators of plant performance despite the obvious differences between the flotation environments. A reagent scheme selected in this way would subsequently be employed to generate the grade and recovery information for the geometallurgical model which in turn was used for metal production and cash flow forecasts. If the reagent scheme was sub-optimal then so too would be the forecasts and the resulting cash flow.

Mineral processing is characterized by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customers´ requirements for product purity and consistent quality increase. Indian iron ores are characteristically friable in nature that results in generation of sizeable quantity of fines (0-10mm) every year during various stages of mining and processing in the country with grade varying from 50-60% Fe(T) and are high in silica/alumina (Al2O3 5-8%). The fines generated cannot be directly used for iron making (blast furnace/DRI units) in the country due its physical and chemical properties; therefore, large portion of it gets exported or dumped. Value addition to iron ore fines through various activities such as beneficiation & palletization is the need of the hour, which will not only be economically beneficial to the mining sector in the long run but also generate value addition & employment opportunities. Incentives may be given for adopting latest technologies for direct use of fines in iron making by agglomeration of fines in the form of Pellets and Sinters, as fines forms considerable part of iron ore resources. Due to selective mining, although the iron content of the ore is high but the alumina(Al2O3) content in iron ore is also significantly high which demands for beneficiation as high alumina will create problem during iron making like higher fuel consumption, poor quality of slag produced, reduced productivity of B.F. all mineral has been engaged in hematite iron ore beneficiation with its gravity and magnetic separators since the mid-nineties. The delivery of jigs started for the upgrading of iron ore for its utilization in a Direct Reduction Plant in Australia. Since then, various other installations with jigs for lumps and fines as well as upstream separators for fines are in operation in Brazil, Australia, India and South Africa. Low grade run of mine and/or dump ores are being processed with alljig®-, allflux®- and gaustec®-WHIMS as the core equipment. The article describes the technology in use, the characteristics of various iron ores and the product qualities achieved. The data presented shows the specific advantages of jig application on iron ore upgrading due to the possible high gravity cuts and the easy and low cost operation. The allflux®- technology provides the big advantage of high capacities and a two-step process, both in a single unit. The gaustec®-wet high intensity magnetic separators offer high capacity in combination with unsurpassed process flexibility. Calcium carbonate has three polymorphs: calcite, aragonite, and vaterite. Needlelike aragonite CaCO3 with a high ratio of length to diameter (aspect ratio) is widely used in plastics, rubber and ceramics as a filler and in pigments and paints as a carrier. This paper investigated the influence of H3PO4 dosage, reaction temperature, CO2 flow rate, and initial Ca(OH)2 concentration on formation of needlelike aragonite CaCO3. It was found that the presence of H3PO4 in Ca(OH)2 suspension resulted in rapid formation of (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) crystal nuclei, which facilitated nucleation and growth of aragonite CaCO3 on the formed (Ca5(PO4)3(OH)) crystal surfaces. The results revealed that H3PO4 addition of P/Ca of 0. 2~0. 3, high temperature of 75~85 °C, low CO2 flow rate and initial Ca(OH)2 solid concentration of 1. 5 %~5. 6 % are beneficial to formation of aragonite. Well crystallized needlelike aragonite CaCO3 whiskers with length > 20 µm and aspect ratio > 15 were directly synthesized.

"Clays are present in a large number of mineral deposits and are commonly found as gangue. Its complex chemical structure, characterised by anisotropic surfaces, makes its presence a permanent challenge for flotation operations, increasing the reagent consumption, decreasing the quality of the concentrate, and changing the rheological properties of the system. In this context, the main objective of this research is to improve the floatability of chalcopyrite minerals in the presence of clays by using guar gum, a low molecular weight organic polymer, which acts as a surface coating agent for clays. Clay Minerals Society provided the kaolinite sample and the chalcopyrite sample was purified from mineralized rock specimens obtained from Ward’s Natural Science Establishment. Micro flotation tests were carried out in a 150 cm3 Partridge-Smith cell, using compressed air as the gas phase at a flow rate of 80 cm3/min. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were used as a collector and a frother, respectively. The results showed that the use of guar gum improves the recovery of chalcopyrite in the presence of kaolinite because it induces the formation of clay aggregates that settle by gravitational effects, preventing the 'coating effect' and decreasing excessive collector consumption. pH played a key role in the guar gum performance, which was most effective at highly alkaline conditions (pH 11), where the copper recovery improved from 73% to 90%. The work has significant implications for the mineral flotation in the presence of clay minerals.INTRODUCTION The mining industry is continuously confronted with challenges that alert the sustainability of the sector. There is little availability of water, the grade of the deposits are getting smaller, and the gangue is becoming more complex. Usually, clays are part of the gangue in numerous systems, including copper ore, porphyry, nickel, platinum, etc. (Senior & Thomas, 2005). The structure is mainly composed of layers of tetrahedral silica (T) and octahedral alumina (O) that join in certain proportions: 1: 1 (T-O) and 2: 1 (T-O-T) (Theng, 2012). Also, they expose two crystallographically different surfaces: the faces, which tend to be negatively charged, and the edges, which carry a charge that changes from positive to negative depending on the pH (Van Olphen, 1977). One of the most common clays in copper deposits is kaolinite, whose structure is composed of an octahedral sheet of gibbsite bound to a tetrahedral silica sheet in the ratio 1:1"
