Manganese nodules on deep ocean floors have continuously received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and relatively higher metal concentrations (Mero, 1965; Cronan, 1980). Several registered Pioneer Investors have already identified promising sites in deep-sea regions for manganese nodule mining (ISA, 1998), and appropriate mining technologies have been developed during the last thirty years by the international consortium and several nations (Welling, 1981; Kaufman et al., 1985; Bath, 1989; Charles et al., 1990; Yang and Wang, 1997; Yamada and Yamazaki, 1998; Hong and Kim, 1999; Muthunayagam and Das, 1999). The mining feasibility for manganese nodules, including an economic evaluation, has been examined in detail by some researchers (Andrews et al., 1983; Hillman and Gosling, 1985; Charles et al., 1990; Soreide et al., 2001).

Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded. Near-seafloor high-resolution mapping and photographic transects, associated with finer-spaced box-core sampling could constitute a next step to better constrain the mineable areas and to get a higher level of confidence in the resource estimation.

"INTRODUCTIONToday’s metal mining focusses on land based ore deposits which only consider one third of the Earth’s surface. Through an increasing global demand of strategic metals used in the electronic and green industry (Zepf et al. 2014), ‘uneconomic’ sites of lower grade in more technical challenging grounds such as greater depth and/or more remote areas are developed by the mining industry often resulting in higher environmental impact. However, considering the steady growth of the Earth population a shortage of certain metals may occur (Krausmann et al. 2009). In 2010, the United Nations allowed commercial exploration for seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) in international waters with currently six contractor licenses being granted.Although the number of discovered vent sites has steadily increased since the first discovery of hydrothermal venting at the Galapagos Rift in 1977 (Corliss et al. 1979) with more than 600 sites being known today, their economic potential is poorly constrained. So far Nautilus Minerals Inc., a Canadian mining company, is the only company having conducted a NI 43-101 resource estimate for the Solwara site, located in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea. Other studies using bulk geochemical data from 95 sites published in literature do exist (Hannington et al. 2011, Monecke et al. 2016) suggesting a global resource potential for today’s known SMS deposits of 600 million tons with a median grade of 3 wt.-% copper, 9 wt.-% zinc, 2 g/t gold and 100 g/t silver. However, the geochemical data being used originated mainly from easily recoverable, mainly non insitu surface grab-samples and are under current mineral resource classification schemes such as JORC code or NI 43-101 not even accepted for resource estimations. Furthermore surface samples such as high-temperature sulphide chimney and talus material are not representative for the entire deposits with information regards thickness and continuity of individual sulphide layers obtained through drilling being scarce. In addition, it remains unknown what geological processes occur once hydrothermal activity ceases and whether metal tenor becomes enriched, depleted or disappears."

Investigations of the Gorda Ridge within the proclaimed U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge extending along the center of the Atlantic Ocean, have received new impetus from the discovery of hot black smokers, sizeable polymetallic massive sulfide deposits, and vent animals at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge by the NOAA VENTS Program in 1985. Prior to that time, the oceanographic community focused investigations of seafloor venting at the faster-spreading oceanic ridges of the Pacific Ocean including the East Pacific Rise, the Galapagos spreading center and the Juan de Fuca Ridge because a consensus held that the faster spreading rates at these ridges were necessary to supply the heat to drive black smoker-type venting. As the only oceanic ridge in the Pacific with slow-spreading characteristics, the Gorda Ridge is an outlier of the slow-spreading ridge system that extends through the Atlantic Ocean and western Indian Ocean comprising more than half the 55,000-kilometer-length of the globe-encircling oceanic ridge system. Gregg Marine, Inc. (headquartered in Signal Hill, California) has recently introduced an innovative seafloor drill system for offshore geotechnical site investigation and seafloor mineral exploration. The system is capable of working in water depths of up to 3,000 meters and is rated to drill to a depth of approximately 150 meters below mudline. The remote operated system integrates established drilling technology with proven Schilling telemetry and controls. The flexible nature of the patented wireline drilling technology enables the use of standard sampling systems (up to PQ-size core and 3? thin-walled tubes) as well as downhole testing systems (including CPT testing, vane shear testing, downhole sensors and borehole geophysical tools). The modular nature of the seabed drill system and the accompanying launch and recovery system (LARS) enables the use of local vessels of opportunity for projects resulting in reduced project costs and improved mobilization responsiveness times. Ocean floor sulfide deposits are now known from many parts of the world mid-ocean ridge system and from some seamounts. Clearly they can be expected to occur commonly on the ocean floor. However, only two or three of the known deposits appear to approach the million-ton size, and in none of the deposits has the grade been well-defined. Can knowledge of the processes that happen within the hydrothermal plumbing below deposits help define the conditions under which large, high-grade deposits form? Here I review present knowledge of ocean-floor hydrothermal processes to attempt a first answer to this question. There are three sources of information about these processes. The solutions emerging from active systems must be compatible with patterns of alteration that underlie the volcanogenic sulfide deposits of ophiolite complexes, which are slices of ocean crust thrust onto land. Both of these types of evidence can be linked by computer modelling of the exchange of heat and metals between rocks and flowing water.

"Recent concerns over the availability of many mineral raw materials, and newly available technological developments, produced renewed interest in deep-sea mining. However, environmental concerns, with variable degrees of justification, are raising opposition to the concept. The forecast for the behavior of consumption versus availability of many raw materials, nearly all critical metals, arguably show that consumption will grow much faster than resource discovery onshore. Finding new sources of raw materials seems inescapable. The deep seafloor stands out as the only likely candidate.Sea Floor Mining and the EcosystemMarine mining has already started, decades ago, for diamonds, currently up to depths near 400m. Although the industry recognizes there is a footprint, it considers the footprint quite minor, because the area mined is small: in Namibia, where offshore diamond mining is now 70% of the country’s total, only 3% of the concession of 3,700 sq miles (9600km2) have been mined. Mineral zonation studies were conducted on hydrothermal vents of two hot spot volcanoes. One study site is located within the Axial Caldera of the axial hot spot volcano of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The young high-temperature hydrothermal vent field consisting of two polymetallic sulfide chimneys, five meters high, located at 130°01.5'W, 45°56.5'N, along a fault complex at the base of the southwestern wall of Axial Caldera was sampled during four ALVIN dives in 1983. Temperatures of up to 270°C were measured within the orifice of one of the chimneys, which was then broken off and recovered with the submersible. Both black and white "smoke" was observed to be emanating from the one chimney sampled. The high-temperature chimney extends directly from a field of broken lobate lavas which are located at a water depth of 1,550 meters, about 200 meters east of the caldera wall. The chimney makes one of the shallowest active high-temperature vents studied to date. The vent is surrounded by clumps of vestimentiferan worms and is located within an elongate field of red-colored iron smectite blankets and chimneys. The low-temperature field forms a ribbon 150 meters wide, extending for about 1,300 meters at the base of the wall. Chemical analyses of the hydrothermal deposits ranging from the polymetallic sulfides of the chimney to the outer zones of the low-temperature field show a range of elemental assemblages consistent with temperature zonation around the vent. Although Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, and Co have been the main interests since the ferromanganese nodules had been found, the other major components such as Si and Ca might be very important controlling factors in the processing due to the locally variable content. It is because of the fact that SiO2 and CaO are added to decrease the smelting temperature in the reduction-smelting method for manganese nodule processing. We have compiled the 707 chemical data for KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Survey) ferromanganese nodules, which have been acquired from 1994 to 2001 and have been also standardized from 2001 to 2003 to avoid the discrepancy between the data sets. All 707 chemical data were used for the hierarchical cluster analysis to get the elemental correlations and also classified by the morphological types. The averages from each station were classified by the facies groups (Fig. 1) and the localities. Then all data are plotted on the SiO2-CaO-MnO phase diagram at 1773°K to compare with the best compositional area in the nodule smelting. Variations and distributions of SiO2 and CaO as well as those of Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni and Co in KODOS ferromanganese nodules were also reviewed. The mineral phases assigned by the cluster analysis are CFA (Carbonate Fluorapatite), Fe-oxide, Al-silicate, and Mn-oxide. MnO contents are generally higher than SiO2 contents in most of the morphological types except for the Is- and It-type. The Dt- and Tt-type show wider range and the E-types show high anomaly in their CaO contents. The stations which belong to facies group A and B show generally higher MnO contents than SiO2 contents, however, the stations of facies group C and D show wide range in their MnO and SiO2 contents.

Analysis of the relationship between environmental parameters and the content of Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Fe and Zn in ferromanganese crusts permits improved identification of locations to prospect for crusts with commercially valuable concentrations of these metals. In this study we asked whether a statistically significant relationship exists between primary productivity of the overlying surface waters, the concentration of O2 in and depth of the O2 minimum layer on the metal content of non-hydrothermal ferromanganese crusts in the Pacific Ocean between 130o W and 175o E and 0o to 30o S (the study area). To further develop the interpretation of the results of the statistical analysis and to assess in detail the geographical expression of these parameters in terms of metal content in crusts, a geostatistical technique (kriging) was used to generate contoured values for metal content, primary productivity and O2 concentration in and depth of the O2 minimum layer in the study area.

Since the mid 1970's, the science of remote sensing has invented and demonstrated sensors that hold unique promise for users that operate in the marine environment. Earlier, visible and infrared sensors provided images and temperature maps of surface conditions, but the 1970's introduced active (radars) and passive (radiometers) microwave sensors capable of penetrating clouds and operating day or night over the world's oceans. Space-based observation satellites permit these systems to span the globe many times each day, providing a view of the world's oceans and Arctic areas consistent with daily and, sometimes, hourly changes in the marine environment. Experimental satellites launched by NASA proved that such systems had great scientific merit, but, even more importantly, they could produce information valuable to marine transportation, fishing, and resource exploration and extraction. This latter subject includes the off-shore search and production of petroleum and natural gas resources and ocean mining as well. "The paper provides the principle considerations for a novel vehicle class within the scope of the project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM). The main idea for these ships is to create a highly modular building block system for the global layout. This building block system allows for a mission-dependent module assembly. For the purpose of deep sea mining for example, the range of tasks reaches from multipurpose transportation and exploration missions to supporting tasks in up to 5000 m depth, e.g. energy supply. Topics covered in this paper are related to potential missions for these vehicles, the modular layout and the structural layout of a separate block module. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the leading economic nations, Germany is in need of energy and raw materials. In the 21st century, marine resources are a prominent and promising alternative to land based resources. However, there are challenges that need to be considered. Rough and often poorly plannable weather conditions prevail distant to the marginal seas. Ice coverage makes offshore services inefficient and costly in Polar Regions. The average ocean depth of 3500m and the associated environment conditions cause difficulties in fulfilling tasks in the deep sea. The project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) [1] will enable more efficient solutions in order to accomplish undersea duties and services in harsh conditions.This joint project comprises workshares from Atlas Elektronik, EvoLogics, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the University of Rostock and the Technische Universität Berlin. The principle idea of the project is the conception of a novel vehicle class. With highly modular autonomous underwater vehicles, this class will be capable of undertaking a variety of different tasks. Classically engineered vehicle structures will be split into single basis modules which can be flexibly assembled with specialized mission modules to form potent systems for individual assignments. The group of basis modules consists of units for navigation, vehicle control, propulsion and energy generation via fuel cell technology. The potential reusability of system relevant modules leads to a significant cost reduction and to shortened development periods compared with conventional vehicle concepts. The integration of newly designed additional mission modules is possible with little effort and a separate commercialization of single modules is feasible."

Seafloor hydrothermal deposits are found worldwide at 700 to 3,600 meters below sea level [1] and contain base and precious metals like Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag. Some deposits were found in the Japanese exclusive economic zone and the commercial potential will depend on developments in mining and treatment costs of onshore mines. The ores require mineral processing to become concentrate for the various metal smelters and the authors are investigating mineral processing treatments of collected samples. The collected samples were classified into three components (chimney, mounds, and substrate rocks) and they were separated using a RETAC jig. The mound component contains zinc, lead, and copper minerals and further separation using flotation was investigated. This paper introduces results of the mineral processing tests using gravity separation and flotation.

Recently, characterized by fast development high- and nano-technology, demand for rare and trace metals has increased. One of such metals is gallium. Gallium compounds, mainly GaAs, are used in medicine, to manufacture optoelectronic devices, microwave techniques, devices of solar power and infrared optics, etc. The basic gallium industrial deposits are known only on land. There are bauxites (50 ppm), nepheline rocks and ores (36-38 ppm, minerals concentrators are nepheline and sodalite), Zn-Pb-Cu ores (5000-12000 ppm, minerals concentrators are gallite, germanite, sphalerite, bornite), sulphide-polymetallic and Pb-Zn ores (10-32 ppm, minerals concentrators sphalerite, chalcopyrite) (Vershkovskya et al., 1998). High concentration of gallium are observed in hydrothermal massive sulphides of a Mid-Okinawa Trough (The South Chinese Sea) and Sujo seamount (The Philippine Sea) (Noguchi et al., 2007). As it is known, deep-sea massive sulphides and associated Fe-Mn crusts are products of hydrothermal fluid discharge. High-temperature massive sulphides precipitation are the first, and low-temperature Fe-Mn crusts deposition is the last process of hydrothermal mineralization (Cronan, 1982). Hydrogenic crusts and nodules of the World ocean are characterized by low concentration of Ga, close to clarke (19 ppm) (Kobaltbogatye.., 2002). Hydrogenic crusts from the Sea of Okhotsk are exception, because Ga concentrations are exceeded clarke in 3,5 times (Mikhailik, et al., 2009). Complex studying of Fe-Mn crusts from deep-sea basins volcanic seamounts of the Sea of Japan has shown their hydrothermal-sedimentary genesis (Mikhailik, 2009). High gallium concentration (up to 850 ppm) was established in these crusts by ICP-MS (Agilent 7500C). Microprobe research (JXA-8100) of samples Fe-Mn crusts has not revealed the gallium minerals concentrators. It suggests that, gallium in Fe-Mn crusts of the Sea of Japan is sorb substance.

Radiometric surveys of the beach and nearshore zone of the Dutch Frisian Islands have identified sands enriched in heavy minerals. The areas of heavy mineral concentration have been mapped in detail using a state of the art towed gamma-ray detector, which gives improved sensitivity through the use of new detector materials and improved data processing techniques. The detector provides continuous measurement of sea floor radioactivity (and of a number of other parameters) and can be used simultaneously with other survey techniques, such as echo sounding, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. It enables a rapid, and cost effective, assessment of the surface distribution of heavy minerals to be made. The heavy mineral suite includes magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, rutile and zircon. These minerals contain 1-3 orders of magnitude more U and Th, in terms of their activity concentrations, than the accompanying light minerals (mainly quartz). Since the heavy mineral composition of the sands appears to be relatively constant along the Dutch Frisian Island chain, the U and Th concentrations can be used to provide a quick estimate of the heavy mineral content. The sea floor radiometric measurements allow sediment sampling for more detailed analysis to be highly targetted. The zones of heavy mineral enrichment are generally sub-parallel to the coast and are usually confined to water depths of 5-10 m. There is a close correlation with sand bars on the shoreface, the highest radioactivity typically occurring just seaward of the crest of these features. As well as being used for heavy mineral exploration, similar radiometric methods can be applied to mineral processing. Gamma-ray detection systems can be used to provide rapid analysis in the process stream enabling on-line grade control and optimisation of processing, from excavation of mineral sands to the final products.

Two major Kuroko-type deposits and minor sulfide deposits have been found in the middle Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) Arc, Japan (Fig. 1). The Hakurei deposit, one of the major Kuroko-type deposits, was recently found in Bayonnaise knoll caldera in the nascent rift zone, which lies 20 km westward of the Sunrise deposit in Myojin knoll caldera on the Izu-Ogasawara volcanic front. The Hakurei deposit is a huge hydrothermal field measuring 500 m by 700 m in plan view. The Bayonnaise knoll caldera is mainly composed of dacite lavas and fragmental material on the caldera wall and rim, and its floor contains sediment composed of pumice, volcanic fragments, and hydrothermal clay. It is associated with a post-caldera dome and has a slightly ellipsoidal caldera rim that measures 3 km by 2.5 km, with about 200 m relief. The water depths of the caldera floor range from about 840 m to 920 m. The Kuroko-type deposit in the Bayonnaise knoll caldera occurs on the southeastern caldera floor where the caldera boundary faults intersect with a N-S-trending normal fault of the rift zone. In the deposit, many sulfide chimneys are generally less than 10 m high, and sulfide mounds are distributed around the caldera floor and on the sloping talus at the foot of the caldera wall. The deposit is buried in part by talus composed of pumice and volcanic fragments. Sulfide chimneys are still active, and inactive ones and their fragments are partly oxidized to reddish material. Chimney sulfides are mainly composed of sphalerite associated with chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and barite, and chemically enriched in Au up to 14 ppm and Ag up to 1400 ppm with major Zn, moderate Ba, and minor Pb, Hg, Cu, and Fe.

Ocean mining has a number of problems which are critical to its development: ? Political hurdles on national and international stages ? The worldwide economic situation, with the possibliity of a recession ? Financial difficulties in funding further work ? Technical problems for the development of ocean mining and transport subsystems ? Demands for technology transfer This paper touches the last two points and provides some thoughts for discussion and creative objectification. The many technical problems of ocean mining will be identified and some proposed solutions will be investigated relative to the state-of-the-art technology of ocean mining and nodule transport. An outlook into the future attempts identification of the steps necessary to eventually develop components for workable systems that are not only technically but also economically feasible.

Venting on ultraslow spreading ridges is far more abundant then previously predicted, and the discrepancy between observed and predicted vent field density may imply that non-magmatic heat sources are common along these ridges (Baker and German, 2004; Escartin et al., 2008; Rona et al., 2010; German et al., 2016). In this study we have estimated the flux from two hydrothermal vent sites situated on the slow to ultraslow spreading Mohns Ridge at the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system (AMOR). The flux estimates have been made using the primordial isotope 3He in the non-buoyant plume above the Loki’s Castle vent field at the northern termination of the Mohns Ridge, and from the Jan Mayen vent fields area situated close to the southern termination of the ridge. Primordial 3He enters the oceans through degassing and mixing with hydrothermal fluids eventually to be discharged at the ocean floor primarily at hydrothermal vent sites and submarine volcanic eruptions (e.g. Clarke et al., 1969; Lupton and Craig, 1981; Lupton, 1998). Once introduced into the water column the concentration will only decrease by dilution due to its conservative behavior in the water column. Water column samples were collected using a CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) probe (911plus Seabird) with a Niskin water bottle rosette. The water column above the Jan Mayen vent fields (JMVF) was sampled in the years 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2013 (82 samples) and the water column above the Loki’s Castle vent field was sampled in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009 (116 samples).
