The Candrill was developed with Soredem as a one-operator rockdrill for Canadian narrow vein mining. It provides the benefits of increased drilling rates, lower noise and vibration, mass reduction of 20% and system cost saving. The Candrill is to be commercialised at the end of 2001 together with a stoper drill through Parts Headquarters, Novatek's Canadian agent. The Candrill or pneumatic drills may be further exploited using a simple mechanised drilling system to further reduce operator labour, improve drilling speeds by up to 50% and to enhance drilling accuracy. Novatek's drilling system for simple mechanisation in gold and platinum mines is integrated with roof supports, can operate in stope widths as low as 800 mm and has resulted in labour savings of 50%, improved advances per blast of 20 to 50% and improved operator safety and ergonomics.

"This paper will initially outline the specific types of copper castings used in blast furnace iron production. Tuyeres, tuyere coolers and stack cooling plates will be discussed in some depth, with particular reference to their dimensional configuration and purpose.Following this, the failure of such cooling members will be discussed, with special focus on tuyeres. Tuyeres are the most common casting which often requires replacement. Reasons for failure and its effect on operations will also be included.The latter sections of the paper will deal with the strict specifications demanded by ironmakers regarding copper castings. The justification for such rigid demands will be explained through the material presented earlier in the paper.IntroductionThe modern 5000-tpd blast furnace, worth millions, is a large capital investment to be sitting idle. Consequently, ironmakers strive to minimize the loss in iron production and revenue from furnace downtime. Two major causes of downtime are furnace relines and shutdowns to replace damaged tuyeresor tuyere coolers. Copper ancillaries are important items in the production of iron. They are consumable items, therefore they contribute to the campaign life or to the downtime in blast furnace production.Several combinations of lining and cooling systems have been used with varying degrees of success. Blast furnace refractories have evolved from ceramic to carbonaceous linings. The Russians and Japanese have successfully introduced stave-cooled furnaces that may have several forms, such as evaporative cooling. Stelco has two furnaces which use the Russian-designed cast iron system. However, this paper will be confined to the use of copper cast cooling members in a conventional internally cooled furnace.Figure 1 is a schematic cross section of the E blast furnace. The three major sections of a blast furnace-the stack, bosh and hearth-are identified. Further, the locations of the various copper members are indicated. This furnace produces an average of 5300 tons of hot metal per day."

In 1979, John Peacey and William (Bill) Davenport published The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice billed as "An up to date and comprehensive treatment of blast furnaces from fundamental principles to modern operations" (back cover). As a 1979 graduate of McGill University’s Metallurgical Engineering program, I belonged to the last "beta" student group which completed the prescribed blast furnace course work before The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published. As my career developed, I become an international blast furnace consultant and have worked with blast furnace operators and raw material suppliers on 5 continents. The blast furnace is the dominate iron making process responsible for 70% of global steel production. Blast furnace engineers have implemented many improvements by manipulating the blast furnace process metallurgy using the principles presented by Peacey and Davenport to reduce coke consumption and increase oxygen usage and blast furnace productivity. This paper briefly summarizes some key principles presented by Peacey and Davenport (1979), describes process improvements made by blast furnace operators over the 35 years since The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published and outlines important future developments in blast furnace technology.

"Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are:1. the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency;2. the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids;3. the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and4. the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system.In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system through mechanical modification as follows:•, CCD1 has a modified rake mechanism that now allows central vertical lift of 600 mm;•, CCD1 has forced dilution using the Outokumpu Turbodil® technology and replacing the E-Duc® technology of Eimco;The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1 per cent (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2 per cent improvement in the circuit underflow density.The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil®dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary solution neutralisation improvements."

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

In Finland one opportunity for large-scale CO2 capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) is CO2 mineralisation, i.e. mineral carbonation. A process route under development towards industrial application involves production of magnesium hydroxide or sulphate from serpentinite rock (serpentine = 3MgO·2SiO2·2H2O), followed by conversion either in a pressurised fluidised bed (PFB) reactor, giving magnesium carbonate, or in an aqueous solution process giving magnesium hydro-magnesites. Iron present in the rock is typically obtained FeO(OH). Results obtained with these process routes and progress towards industrial demonstration is addressed, process heat integration and operation on flue gases (without CO2 pre-separation!) being key features for economic viability. A process route utilizing calcium-containing slag by-product from iron- and steelmaking under development towards large-scale application is the so-called slag2pcc concept. It converts an industrial by-product into valuable material, reduces use of natural material and streams to landfills while binding CO2 produced by the process generating the slag. Using ammonium salts, calcium is extracted from steel converter (BOF) slags and subsequently carbonated in a two-stage aqueous process (at ambient temperatures and pressures). Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is produced while regenerating the ammonium salt. Process performance and scale-up while guaranteeing a certain PCC quality are presented.

Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several &apos;industrial minerals&apos;, including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

"Water and cyanide are highly contentious and conflict issues that many gold mining companies encounter worldwide when dealing with local farming communities, industries and cities competing for water as well as non-government and government organizations. Historically, the gold industry has used processes that required minimum amounts of water to treat and recover gold at locations around the world. Examples are dry grinding for refractory gold treatment in the late 1800s and early 1900s and dry blowing in arid/desert regions to recover alluvial gold. In recent times, new dry processing equipment has been developed and include equipment such as air tables and jigs. Researchers have also modified a Knelson concentrator to concentrate gold from dry solids. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) with air classifiers are used to treat industrial minerals and pilot trials have shown that the technology can be applied to comminute refractory gold ores ahead of roasting. Dry stacked tailings is being applied on gold mines to reduce overall water consumption This paper will review the available technologies that in combination may be able to substantially reduce the quantity of water used in the processing of gold ores.INTRODUCTION Water makes up most of the world: the planet is 75% water. Some 97.5% is saline water largely in the oceans, so that only 2.5% is fresh water and useful for human needs. The demand for water is driven primarily by population and concomitant economic growth. Overall, some 70% of the water withdrawn from the environment is used in agriculture, 20% by industry, 7% by households and 3% for mining (Brown, 2003: Maupin et al., 2010). Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Mining activities are often located in remote, arid environments, with limited access to water. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for its needs. However, much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (i.e. salinity has increased). In today‘s world, there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine, and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community. Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (i.e. by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing (Dunne, 2010)."

Introduction For many years the necessity of mechanization of all the underground services in the collieries of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation in the Sydney, Pictou, and Cumberland coalfields has been foremost in the minds of those concerned with the engineering and operating policies of the Corporation, and a gradual policy of the mechanization of these services has been undertaken over the years, until nearly all the underground services, except the actual loading of the coal at the face, have been mechanized. Early in 1928, experiments in mechanical loading were conducted which finally culminated in the installation of mechanical loading units in our No. 20 colliery in 1938. This attempt at mechanization of the final underground services proved unsuccessful because the workmen were not ready to accept complete mechanization, and the fruition of many years of study was delayed until the year 1947. During the ensuing years, the engineers and operators of the Corporation had studied the possibility of adapting to conditions prevailing in Nova Scotia mines the many types of loading equipment in use in the United States and Europe. The varied physical conditions which exist in the fields operated by the Corporation rendered it extremely difficult to apply the equipment and technique successfully employed in the United States, and more recently in Europe, and special techniques have had to be devised to meet the need of each individual colliery. Prevailing physical conditions in the Nova Scotia fields find no parallel for mechanization with those of any other part of the American continent.

"Canada is scheduled to become the 4th highest diamond revenue producing country in the world by year 2004 with the already operating Ekati Mine and the anticipated operation of the Jericho Mine in 2002 and the Diavik Mine in 2003.This paper provides an overview of worldwide diamond production statistics and a brief introduction to a diamond processing plant. The dense medium separation (DMS) extraction process is presented and this process is discussed in more detail with respect to the extraction of diamonds in terms of feed preparation, dense medium, dense medium cyclones, ferrosilicon recovery and dense medium cyclone operating efficiencies.INTRODUCTIONThe Ekati Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories started commercial production of diamonds in the 4* quarter of 1998. At full production, the mine is anticipated to produce annually some 3 million carats of diamonds. The Jericho Mine in Nunavut Territory and the Diavik Mine in the Northwest Territories are anticipated to come into production in the 1'' quarter of 2002 and 1st half of 2003 respectively. The combined annual diamond production of these three mines will total approximately 10.34 million carats by 2004, making Canada the 4~ highest diamond revenue producing country in the world.A diamond processing plant initially utilizes crushing, scrubbing and screening in the beneficiation process to liberate diamonds from kimberlite ore and size the product for further treatment through DMS. Alluvial diamond operations do not require initial crushing and scrubbing but incorporate a feed preparation and sometimes a recrush facility with the DMS plant. The heavy sink product from the DMS, which contains diamonds, is further upgraded through x-ray separation and high intensity magnetic separation prior to producing the final diamond product.DMS is a relatively simple separating principle. A mixture of particles of different density is immersed in a dense fluid, so that particles having a density lower than that of the fluid will float while those of heavier density will sink. The translation of the float-sink principle from a laboratory method to continuous industrial practice offers the prospect of very precise mineral separations based on density differences alone."

"In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of ferric and ferrous couple on the pyrite surface was studied by application of the chronoamperometry technique in an acidic solution at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The effects of the pyrite origin, ferric and ferrous ions concentration on the electron transfer kinetics of Fe3+/Fe2+ reaction were probed. Tafel behavior of all the test conditions were developed. The results showed that the ferric-ferrous reaction on pyrite electrodes with different origins have a common mechanism, despite different reaction kinetics. The exchange current densities of the redox reaction have the same magnitude of about 10-5 A·cm-2, which is far lower than the value reported for the gold and platinum electrodes, but larger than that of the chalcopyrite electrode. The cathodic transfer coefficients are between 0.4 and 0.5, while the anodic transfer coefficients appear unusual with the lowest value being 0.23. It was also demonstrated that an increase of one order of magnitude of iron concentration has no clear effect on the exchange current density and cathodic transfer coefficients of Fe3+/Fe2+ redox reaction.INTRODUCTIONPyrite, FeS2, is mostly considered as a gangue mineral which frequently coexists with valuable minerals and metals, such as gold, copper and nickel. Its separation from valuable minerals can be a costly process (Chandra & Gerson, 2010). In refractory gold ores, the fine gold particles are locked inside the pyrite structure. Oxidative leaching of pyrite is a hydrometallurgical method to destroy the structure of pyrite and expose the fine gold particles to the cyanide solution in the downstream cyanidation circuit. Pyrite oxidative leaching can be achieved by oxidation of pyrite via oxygen and ferric ion(McKibben & Barnes, 1986). In fact, pyrite oxidation by oxygen and ferric is a significant source of acid mine drainage(AMD), which adversely causes serious environmental problems(V. P. Evangelou, 1995).The pyrite oxidation mechanism is accomplished in three consecutive steps: (i) pyrite is oxidized by oxygen and ferrous ion formation (Eq. 1); (ii) ferrous oxidation by oxygen and ferric ion formation (Eq. 2); (iii) pyrite oxidation by means of ferric ions (Eq. 3). Hence, both oxygen and ferric participate in the pyrite oxidation process (Moses & Herman, 1991):"

Pyrrhotite (Po) is widely considered to be the most significant mineral in the self-heating of sulphides. It is therefore desirable to determine the amount of Po in mineral samples. This is commonly accomplished through x-ray diffraction (XRD) or quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscopy (QEM-SEM). This paper introduces another quantitative method based on Mossbauer analysis that requires limited sample preparation and has the additional potential to detect the sulphur/iron ratio within Po. The technique is explored using pentlandite/pyrrhotite mixtures.

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. If it is acceptable to generalize the outline of a shrinkage stope into an elliptical cross section, then the graphs of Geldart & Udd (1) (see also Panek (2) and Denkhaus (3)) provide a good base for approximating the stress distribution as mining progresses. Thermal shock resistant properties of reaction sintered bauxite-based ß -Sialon bonded corundum have been investigated, and the results are compared with those of Al2O3 based counterpart. It is found they all have very good thermal shock resistance. Their residual strength ratios after one thermal shock cycle at ? T=1200°C and A T=1350°C are 61-73% and 53-65% respectively. TSR parameters are calculated based on thermal expansion, modulus of elasticity, and fracture toughness determined. The reasons for improved TSR of these composite materials are discussed.

"The low cost and availability of micro-computers and their peripherals provides the metallurgical engineer with the opportunity to use such computers in a wide variety of applications. In this paper, the authors describe the development of a low cost data acquisition system capable of measuring up to 8 analogue channels at a sampling rate of up to 5000 measure mentsper second. This system is equipped with proper hardware and software so that the micro-computer can be linked to a central computer facility such as the McGill System for Interactive Computing (MUSIC). This central computer facility is supported by an AMDAHL V7 computer. Using the present interface, communication rates between the microcomputer and the central computing facility can be as high as 9600 (baud).The above mentioned data acquisition system is currently used for monitoring dissolution kinetics of ferro-alloy additions in liquid steel. In addition to this, special software has been developed which enables the user of this system to monitor solidification rates of ingots, etc. As economic considerations are always important, comparisons have been made with existing recorders which show that the cost Of the present system is only 30 per cent more than a two-pen strip chart recorder.RESUMELa disponibilité et le bas prix des micro-ordinateurs et de leurs périphériques permet à l&apos;ingénieur métallurgiste d&apos;utiliser de tels ordinateurs pour diverses applications. THE chief object in presenting this paper on bentonite is to attract general attention to one of the least known and most neglected industrial minerals of Canada, a mineral of extensive commercial possibilities, as evidenced by its development and exploitation in other countries, principally in the United States and Germany; countries upon which some of our most important Canadian industries are dependent for their supply of special clays, such as Fuller&apos;s earth and activated bentonite. It was in view of these conditions and the knowledge of the presence of large quantities of bentonite in the Canadian West that the work here reported on was under-taken. While the investigational studies have not been completed, the results indicate that among the many samples tested there are some of real merit and industrial importance. While it has been the author&apos;s privilege to examine deposits and samples of bentonite from all of the Western provinces, his chief activities in the field and in research studies have naturally been confined largely to Saskatchewan materials. Notwithstanding this, however, this paper is presented in the hope that it may stimulate a more general interest in, and study of, Canadian bentonites as a whole, a matter of such importance that provincial boundary lines should be overlooked. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BENTONITE According to Schurecht and Donda (1), bentonite is commonly composed of the mineral montmorillonite, (Mg,Ca)O.Al203 5SiO2 .nH2O, though some are known to consist of beidellite, Al2O3 3SiO2.nH2O: where n is approximately 4, and in certain cases the Al2O3 may in part be replaced by Fe2O3. For present purposes, however, it may be sufficient to state that, in general, bentonite is a "soapy&apos; clay-like mineral or group of minerals composed largely of hydrous aluminium silicate, but frequently carrying small percentages of the alkalies, alkaline earths, and free silica, as well as silicates, gypsum, and other admixed detritus such that purification is usually necessary.

"INTRODUCTIONRio Algom's involvement with the Enviro-Clear thickener began in May 1975, when tests on a laboratory waif were carried out by our Research and Development group. Commencing in June, further tests were carried out using a 3 foot diameter pilot unit. By December, a 30 foot full-scale thickener had been installed. In the near future, 3 more Enviro-Clear thickeners will be commissioned. With in the space of a year, almost $2.5 million had been committed to liquid/ solid separation facilities using the Enviro-Clear thickener. This paper briefly traces the extent and development of this commitment.BRIEF HISTORY OF QUIRKEQuirke Mine started operating in September 1956 at a rated capacity of 3,000 TOD. Because of market conditions, Quirke was shut down in December 1960. The facilities were re-opened at an increased capacity of 4,000 TPD in July 1968, by which time the demand for uranium had returned. Also, a second shaft was sunk, and by 1970, all of the ore treated in the concentrator was coming from the new Quirke II mine. The Quirke I stopes were allowed to fill with natural seepage. As well, acidic barren solution from the concentrator was pumped underground.With increasing demand for uranium, the capacity of Quirke will be further expanded to 7,000 TPD by 1978. Studies of how this expansion could best he carried out led to the consideration of a fairly new piece of equipment, the Enviro-Clear thickener, for certain operations in the concentrator. "A bulk mining method is employed at the Lockerby mine resulting in the formation of large muck-piles. If these muckpiles remain in the stopes for some time they may agglomerate to the extent that the muck cannot be removed by a scooptram. A laboratory investigation was undertaken with sulphide material from the mine in order to detemine the time that oxidation begins and the flowability of the material as a f unction of several factors. The laboratory results are applied to the conditions in the muck-piles.The time of the beginning of oxidation of the material decreases as the sulphide composition, water content and availability of air increases. Oxidation is retarded by the addition of a copper sulphate solution instead of water. The unconfined yield force (strength} of the material increases with an increase in the sulphide composition, water content and time. The material ceases to be free-flowing before there is visible evidence of oxidation and this suggests that oxidation actually begins earlier and that agglomeration is also due to the capillary action of water.Broken ore should be removed from the stope prior to the time a muck-pile ceases to be free -flowing-perhaps as early as two days f or high-grade ore and 5 days f or low-grade ore. In order to control dust, 1.4 weight per cent of a 5 per cent solution of copper sulphate should be added 10 the muck-pile rather than water. This inhibits oxidation and increases the time that a muck-pile remains free-flowing."
