"The object of the work described in this paper was to increase the understanding of the relation that capillary pressure of a rock, hydro-dynamics, and accumulation of oil in stratigraphie traps have to one an-other. The hydrodynamic oil-water tilt equation is derived by considering the two vector gradients involved: (1) buoyancy of oil in water and (2) hydraulic gradient.Recent theories show the necessity for oil to have a continuons phase in the reservoir rock in order to mi-grate; this fact applies to hydro-static as well as to hydrodynamic conditions. Hydrostatically, the displacement pressure of the rock deter-mines the amount of oil that can be trapped behind a permeability barrier. If the buoyancy of oil in water exceeds the displacement pressure, oil will migrate up-dip; an oil trap will be formed where displacement pressure is greater.In stratigraphie traps the pressure drop caused by moving water is positive when its direction is down-dip, helping accumulation; and it is negative when its direction is up-dip, forcing the oil into the tighter section of the reservoir. Theoretically, pro-vided we have data such as: (1) the displacement pressure of an up-dip permeability pinchout, (2) density difference between the oil and water in place, and (3) the direction and magnitude of the hydrodynamic gradient (if any), the possible extent of a stratigraphie oil accumulation down-dip can be predicted.To test the above theory sample cores from three wells in the Denver Basin were analyzed and the oil column that could be held under hydro-static conditions was calculated. After the hydrodynamic influence was considered, the results were compared with actual field data.The significant fact shown by this investigation is that the calculated oil column in one reservoir very closely approximates the actual extent of the oil column in a well. Also in accordance with the theory, the capillary pressure caused by the buoyancy of the oil column exceeded the measured displacement pressure on core samples from another productive field. For very tight shaly sand and questionable oil shows, the interpretation of data is very critical, as shown by experiments on core samples from a third field."

A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. For the sake of convenience, ? the polarographic methods will be discussed according to the type of supporting electrolyte employed, as the same electrolyte may serve to determine more than one element in more than one type of ore. Introduction Core drilling of the bituminous sands of northern Alberta has been carried on by the Mines and Geology Branch, Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of the Director, W. B. Timm. This was part of the Dominion Government's wartime investigations, which included an agreement with Abasand Oils, Limited, for the study of commercial possibilities of obtaining oil from the bituminous sands. The drilling programme, commenced in 1942 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, was continued in 1943 and subsequently by Boyles Bros. under contract with the Mines and Geology Branch. Several areas have been investigated and one of these, the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, ' herein described, is of special importance in that it contains a sufficiently rich and large deposit of bituminous sands and bitumen beds to warrant consideration of commercial developments for the production of oil. The Steepbank Area, East Side of Athabaska River The Steepbank area, on the east side of Athabaska river in township 92, about twenty-two miles north of Fort McMurray, was selected for drilling in 1942 because previous investigations by Ells indicated it was one of considerable promise both from the standpoint of having reasonably rich bituminous sands under relatively light overburden and also having an excellent tailing disposal and plant site for large-scale operations in proximity to Athabaska river. The drilling done in 1942 and 1943 was largely exploratory, and, when it was found that the southerly part of township 92 had only low-grade material, closer drilling was done in 1944-45 in the richer, more northerly part.

Of the f ive Canadian cement producing regions- Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and Pacific-Ontario has the greatest capacity and normally produces the most cement. However, during the last 5 years the greatest activity within the industry in Canada has been in the Prairie and Pacific regions where major capacity increases have taken place. Most Canadian cement companies produce normal Portland, high-earlystrength Portland and sulphate resisting Portland cements. Some companies also manufacture moderate Portland cement, and low-heat-of-hydration Portland cement. Escalating energy costs highlight the need for technology research into more energy-efficient equipment for the energy-intensive cement industry. The industry is well integrated and plants are well situated to support construction in Canada. Expansion into the United States has become common during the past decade.

Recycled lead, i.e. material produced by the recycling of lead-acid batteries, has become the primary source of lead in much of the world. This has been important to the recycled lead industry as other uses have dwindled, e.g. lead based pigments, chemicals, fuel additives, solders and CRT glasses. Presently, battery manufacturing accounts for greater than 85% of lead consumption worldwide while recycled lead accounts for approximately the same market share of lead supply. Battery manufacturing and production of recycled lead are intimately coupled. In 2007, of all the industrial base metals, lead from lead-acid batteries had the highest recycling rate in North America at greater than 95%. In this paper we will review some of the processes and technologies used in a modern lead acid battery recycling facility, and how recycled lead has become the material of choice for battery construction through the development of a recovery and refining process that exceeds the industry requirements. We will also briefly review an advanced air emissions treatment system in a modern lead recycling plant that demonstrates the feasibility of a new maximum available control technology (MACT) for secondary lead smelters.

The most common type of waves used for probing anisotropy of rocks in laboratory is the direct P wave. Information potential of the measured P-wave velocity, however, is limited. In rocks displaying weak triclinic anisotropy, the P-wave velocity depends just on 15 linear combinations of 21 elastic parameters, called the weak-anisotropy parameters. In strong triclinic anisotropy, the P-wave velocity depends on the whole set of 21 elastic parameters, but inversion for 6 of them is ill-conditioned and these parameters are retrieved with a low accuracy. Therefore, in order to retrieve the complete elastic tensor accurately, velocities of S waves must also be measured and inverted. For this purpose, we developed a lab facility which allows the P- and S-wave ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples in 132 directions distributes regularly over the sphere. The velocities are measured using a pair of P-wave sensors with the transmitter and receiver polarized along the radial direction and using two pairs of S-wave sensors with the transmitter and receiver polarized tangentially to the spherical sample in mutually perpendicular directions. We present an inversion method for elastic parameters describing general triclinic anisotropy. We demonstrate on synthetic tests that the inversion becomes more robust and stable if the S-wave velocities are included. This applies even to the case when the velocity of the S waves is measured in a limited number of directions and with a significantly lower accuracy than that of the P wave. Finally, we analyze velocities measured on a rock sample from the Outokumpu deep drill hole, Finland, including the error analysis for several levels of confining pressure.

"Abstract- The NERCO Con Mine is situated in the amphibolite facies aureole of the Western Plutonic Complex overprinting the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. Metamorphic grade of the upright monoclinal basaltic succession decreases from hornblende-amphibolite facies along the border of the batholith to greenschist facies. Metamorphic isograds, subparalleling the faulted margin of the batholith, transect volcanic stratigraphy and coincide with major gold­ bearing shears.Gold mineralization is confined to north-striking, west-dipping shear zones where hanging­ wall amphibolite facies mineral assemblages retrogress to chlorite-carbonate-sericite-sulfide bearing schists hosting multiple generations of quartz-ankerite veins. The gold-producing portions of the Con and Campbell Shears occur where these structures transect an east trending thermal corridor. The corridor is defined by granitic plugs and a number of related breccia bodies, that can be traced outwards from the batholith across the greenstone belt.Prograde reactions of greenstone during amphibolitization effectively liberate fluids that partition metals. With retrograde reactions at shear zones, gold is precipitated with quartz due to the destabilization of sulfide and arsenic complexes. The coupling of regional prograde metamorphic and restricted retrograde metasomatic overprints suggest mineralization is temporally related to emplacement of the Western Plutonic Complex. Economic gold concentrations within the intrusive corridor indicates enhanced metamorphic overprint of hornfelsed greenstones enveloping satellite intru sives peripheral to the main batholith."

"Inco's Little Stobie Mine is a low-grade nickel operation producing approximately 4()()() tons per day. Backfill has never been an economical option at the mine; therefore, the only viable type of mining in the upper zones has been by sub-level cave. This mining method allows for the draw-down of a rock cover into the empty stopes to provide stability to the over-all rock mass. In the lower areas of the mine, bulk blasthole mining methods have taken place, without rock fill, resulting in extremely large open stopes. As the mine reaches its final stage of recovery, it is inevitable that the hangingwall of the large voids will undergo tensile failure via spoiling.This paper deals with the collaborating efforts of Inco's Rock Mechanics group and the Little Stobie mining operations toward the successful recovery of the ore zone remnants such that the inevitable failure, and time of failure, of the rock mass is ""controlled"". Within the mining scheme, several key requirements had to be met to satisfy the operations: (1) production rates; (2) good blast fragmentation; and (3) secure pulling-horizons. A full-scale rock mechanics study was carried out involving: numerical modelling studies; pulling ellipse analyses; blast design, monitoring and analyses; laser profiling; and time domain rej7ectometry (TDR) instrumentation. The final recovery scheme, employing a controlled failure, involves recommendations on: (1) blasting techniques; (2) support systems; (3) mining sequences and scenarios; and (4) monitoring systems."

Introduction Mineral wool may be defined as "rock, slag, or glass fibres made by a process of melting and blowing by steam or air, containing a minimum of oil and unfiberized material" (U.S. Bureau of Standards CS 117-44). The earliest production of the material was in Wales, about one hundred years ago. In the United States, the industry daces from 1870 when a plant, using slag as raw material, was established in Greenfield, New Jersey. It was not until 1897, however, that large-scale production was commenced on this continent at a plant in Alexandria, Indiana, which utilized rock from nearby deposits. Today, mineral wool is manufactured in many parts of the United States and Canada, the plants for the most part being in close proximity to deposits of suitable rock or to sources of slag. In the United States there are some seventy-five producers with a total annual capacity of nearly one million tons of wool. In Canada, in 1946, eleven manufacturers produced about fifty million square feet of batt-type mineral wool insulation material. Mineral wool is, perhaps, the most efficient of all heat-insulating materials and, moreover, it is fireproof, extremely durable, and insect- proof. Its high efficiency is due to the very low thermal conductivity of the fibres themselves and to the fact that the produce as marketed contains up to 90 per cent non-conducting air space. Depending on the degree of compression of the fibres in the manufactured product, the specific gravity ranges from 2 lb. to 10 lb. per cubic foot. Copper Mountain is the third largest copper mine in British Columbia, and is now producing close to 20 million pounds of copper per year, with which is recovered also 4,000 ounces of gold and. 13,800 ounces of silver. After a long and checkered career, during which the ownership and management changed several times, this deposit finally came into the possession of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company in 1923. It was not, however, until the end of 1925 that the mine, under the management of Charles Bocking and C. H. Smith, was successfully placed on a basis of profitable production. It is a low-grade deposit of the contact-metamorphic type, with refractory ores consisting of chalcopyrite and bornite in a gangue of altered andesitic and basaltic breccia. The ore is concentrated to a product carrying over 30 percent copper, which is smelted in Tacoma. The deposit is 12 miles south of the town of Princeton, which is on the Kettle Valley railway, 150 miles east of Vancouver and 40 miles north of the International Boundary line. Princeton is served also by a branch of the Great Northern railway, which leads clown the Similkameen, Okanagan, and Columbia valleys. Copper Mountain mine and camp are connected to Princeton by a good mo tor road extending up Wolf Creek valley, while the haulage level of the mine, which emerges on the steep side of the Similkameen valley 1,000 feet below the camp, is connected with Princeton by a spur of the Kettle Valley railway leading up the Similkameen canyon and passing en route through Allenby, where the concentrator is situated.

"In the Timmins area, a close spatial and chronological association exists between gold deposits and two major stratabound carbonate-rich members and related quartz-feldspar porphyries. Synvo/canic and metamorphogenic are the two main types of mineralization recognized. Synvolcanic ores include the stratiform quartz-ankerite ""veins"", pyritic carbonates and chert-carbonate-tuff sedimentary rocks and epigenetic ventrelated breccias and stringer zones. Metamorphogenic ores consist of quartz-carbonate fracture fillings in dilatant zones developed during various phases of regional deformation and metamorphism. They are classically epigenetic in character.The evidence suggests a primary syngenetic enrichment of gold on the ocean floor and in vent areas during submarine felsic volcanism and related exhalative-hydrothermal activity followed by further enrichment into quartz-carbonate stockworks during regional deformation and greenschist metamorphism.Although normally thin (a few hundred metres), carbonate members in Archean volcanic terrain represent intense hydrothermal activity which could have transported and enriched gold. They should be used to locate fossil vents and structurally favourable zones where economic concentrations of gold may be found."

"A brief history of the development of the Kivcet flash smelting process is presented. The broad scope of the process with an ability to treat high grade lead sulphide concentrates, as well as oxidized lead-zinc residues, is emphasized. Fine coal in the charge serves two purposes, one as auxiliary fuel and the other as a pre-reductant for ferric iron in residues. Current Kivcet operations incorporate a layer of coke or “coke checker” at the surface of the slag in the reaction shaft that acts as a reducing agent for flame products or slag that flow through it. Details of this invention, are given. IntroductionFor many years, the sinter-blast furnace lead smelting process has been the main internationally accepted method used for the production of primary lead metal. In recent times, this process has been unable to meet legislated environmental restrictions and it became clear in the mid-1960s that a new and cleaner process would have to be developed. The present level of Kivcet performance was developed in three main stages:1. flash smelting natural sulphide lead raw materials with the attached electric furnace for production of lead bullion and crude zinc;2. natural raw material smelting with lead and zinc separation in a “coke filter” or “coke checker” at the surface of the slag in the reaction shaft to produce lead bullion and ZnO-bearing slag that can be fed to conventional slag fuming; and3. processing of oxidized lead-bearing raw materials, such as low grade zinc plant residues, with the production of lead bullion and ZnO-bearing slag periodically directed to slag fuming."

More than a decade ago, CANMET management recognized the need to make better use of existing technological information in mining and extractive metallurgy-two fields basic to the economic well-being of Canada. There were at that time no indexes or files dedicated to disseminating technical information for the many minerals mined and processed in Canada, including coal. CANMET, with the nation's largest research and library resources in the minerals field, was in a unique position to fill this need. Initial efforts were concentrated on building a mining file, beginning with identification of world sources of published information, development of a special thesaurus of terms for language control and adoption of a manual indexing/retrieval system. By early 1973, this file held 8,300 references, with source, abstract and keywords given for each reference. In mid-1973, operations were computerized. Software for indexing and retrieval by batch mode was written by CANMET staff to utilize the hardware facilities of EMR's Computer Science Centre. The resulting MINTEC file-one of the few files of technological information produced in Canada-is the basis for the national literature search service in mining offered by CANMET. Attention is now focussed on building a sister-file in extractive metallurgy using the system already developed. Published information sources have been identified and a thesaurus of terms is being compiled and tested. The software developed for CANMET's file-building operations has several features, including the selective dissemination of information and production from magnetic tape of photo ready copy for publication, as in a bi-monthly abstracts journal.

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. Un modèle de démélange linéaire, appliqué pour estimer les minéraux dans le spectre des échantillons de poudres mixtes, indique que ce modèle a atteint une valeur R2 de 0,88. Le modèle de démélange linéaire a ensuite été appliqué pour estimer la quantité de minerai à partir d’une image satellite hyperspectrale du secteur du gisement."

Canadian newspapers from coast to coast, have been, for months, denouncing those articles entitled, "The Whisper of Death," which have been appearing in the Montreal Star. I have not read these articles as the newspapers do not print them; they just denounce them or class them as jokes. Apparently they think that they are not suitable for the ordinary Canadian to read. It appears, however, that the Star has said that unless we balance our budget, and that soon, we shall be bankrupt. That seems to me like common sense, though the Victoria Times says editorially that the Star claims will "shortly find a place in the joke column". In this editorial the Times quotes with much enthusiasm from the Quebec Telegraph. "Canada," says the Telegraph, "is all right. Her natural resources are so vast that no one need worry. Her future possibilities are limitless; her assets beyond figures". Does it not seem like the limit of nonsense for a country that is not paying its running expenses to make such pretensions? After fifty-five years of Confederation and much talk of national status we are still sponging on the mother country for our external defense; we still allow the hard pressed tax-payer in the old land to shoulder the entire burden. We even now refuse to accept able-bodied working-men from that small and overcrowded country and yet blatently talk of limitless resources.

Gearless mill drives (GMD) offer high performance for torque and speed control for grinding mills and have been applied successfully in modern concentrators for wet grinding with mill diameters from 34 to 40-feet. It is considered a mature technology. However, recently, some large GMD?s have presented unexpected failures in stator and rotor subsystems. The phenomena involved in such failures has shown a complex nature and surprised users and manufacturers. The manifestation of such failures has been observed as mechanical damages to certain components of ring motors. This paper presents a discussion on the electromagnetic forces that can generate stresses in the electrical ring motor that can produce failures and outages. Guidelines for further research and contributions to improved reliability of GMD?s are proposed.

A survey of recent literature indicates that sulphides occur in the volcanic rocks of the Archean, or in sedimentary rocks intercalated with the volcanic rocks. The thick sedimentary sections are generally poor in sulphides. Thus, the widespread pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization in the Archean may be largely of volcanic origin. Introduction I N this paper, commercial base-metal deposits will not be considered, as they are dealt with in other papers of the Symposium. Instead, attention will be focused on those sulphides, often associated with graphitic argillites or tuffs, which have appeared in such embarrassing abundance in electromagnetic surveys of Archean areas. The data on which the paper is based are drawn from recent reports of the Ontario Department of Mines, the Quebec Department of Natural Resources and the Geological Survey of Canada. The information available from these sources is unfortunately limited, because sulphides commonly occur in sheared rocks, such as black argillites and tuffs, which rarely form conspicuous outcrops, and may not be exposed at all. Thus, in the absence of geophysical information, even detailed mapping may fail to reveal the presence of sulphide-rich rocks.

The carbon steel casings of Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) in a co¬generation plant were found to have developed cracks that originated on the inside surfaces. The HRSGs receive hot exhaust gases from the primary Gas Turbines (GTs), which are fuelled with pipeline natural gas. The GTs was initially operating without any suppression of nitrogen oxides (NOx). After being in service for about two years, some of the cracks were found to have penetrated right through the 1/4 in. thick casings. The casings are fitted with insulation on the inside (hot gas side). Examination of steel samples cut from the casing walls revealed (i) fine cracks propagating through the steel from the inside surfaces, and (ii) the presence of relatively large amounts of nitrate ion on the inside surfaces. It was concluded that the nitrate ions originated from nitric acid that was condensing on the relatively cool walls of the casings behind the insulation. Nitric acid was formed in the GT exhaust gases by the combination of water vapour (formed from combustion of the hydrocarbon fuel and from moisture in the combustion air) and nitrogen oxides (formed from nitrogen and oxygen in the combustion air).

The preparation of coal for the commercial market is a study both varied and wide, and can be viewed from many angles and in different ways. This short paper can but touch upon the subject and is intended to discuss briefly preparation plants which in some cases would seem to be quite inadequate. The conditions confronting most operators are similar, inasmuch as the existing plants were not built specifically to prepare a product for the market of today, but rather of yesterday. The tremendous strides made in the field of combustion in recent years require that the product be of the highest grade procurable, and in a glutted and somewhat restricted market the buyer may be more pernickety than otherwise. These would appear to be the conditions of today. Where a mine is operated individually, better all-round results seem more readily procurable than in a consolidated effort where so many different conditions are sure to arise demanding cognizance, and in many cases requiring to be incorporated in the scheme of things. In the case of a number of mines being administered to form a central source, that source not having had anything to do with the bringing into being of the institutions over which it presides, we find some of the mines well equipped with facilities to properly screen and load the coal, while in others the facilities are not so good, but are doing their share towards delivering a product that will pass muster and in such quantities that they can be counted on.
