"In the summer of 1990, pilot scale testing of a Jameson cell was carried out at Falcon bridge Limited, Kidd Creek Division. The Jameson cell is self aspirating and has fewer mechanical parts, thus it has a lower operating cost compared to conventional cells. This lower operating cost combined with positive pilot scale results, justified the evaluation of two full scale cells in the plant. The plant test had two mandates:1. Gain a thorough understanding of the cells operation and design constraints.2. Develop a flow sheet to replace three divisions of copper cleaner flotation.This paper provides an overview on the installation, commissioning and evaluation of the two Jameson cells acquired. The current status of the test program is also discussed.IntroductionThe Falcon bridge Limited-Kidd Creek Division concentrator is located in Timmins, Ontario. The concentrator, commissioned in 1966 and expanded in 1978, consists of four parallel grinding and flotation divisions utilising small cell (60 ft3) technology. With increasing pressure to maintain low operating unit costs a series of studies were undertaken to assess the impact of new technologies in the flotation circuits. The goals of the project were to improve productivity through increased metallurgical performance and/or reduced operating costs.One of the technologies investigated was the Jameson cell designed by Dr. Graeme Jameson of the University of Newcastle and marketed by MIM Holdings Limited, Australia. This style of column technology was chosen based on its potential for reduced capital and operating cost versus large conventional cells.The success of pilot testwork in 1990 led to the installation of two production sized Jameson cells beginning in October 1991. The units were to be used to confirm pilot results and determine equipment requirements for flotation modernisation. This paper will discuss the results and experiences Kidd Creek has had with the Jameson cell from pilot scale through installation and commissioning of the plant units."

"The Adanac molybdenum porphyry deposit near Atlin, in northwestern British Columbia, was discovered in 1905. It was explored extensively between 1967 and 1980.The deposit is within a complex, multi-phase, quartz monzonite stock that is a satellite of the post-accretionary, Surprise Lake Batholith. Biotite K-Ar dates range from 703 ± 2.4 Ma to 71.6 ± 2.1 Ma, indicating a Late Cretaceous age of emplacement.The deposit comprises an irregular-shaped ring or halo peripheral to a quartz monzonite porphyry dome, or ""cupola': The shape of the ring, and of a smal~ fine-grained quartz monzonite intrusion, and the presence of higher-grade mineralimtion on the eastern flank of the cupola, suggest partial control by a preminera/ structure. The deposit is truncated by a steep, northwesterly dipping, normal fault (Adera Fault) that down-dropped the northern half of the deposit by a minimum of 100 mThe deposit lacks strong zonal alteration but there are narrow envelopes of potassic alteration around some veins and local zones of intense wall-rock silicification. There is considerable retrograde alteration along postminera/ faults and fractures.Molybdenite occurs in veins and fractures, many of which are relatively flat-lying. They occur in all phases of quartz monzonite. Molybdenum is the only element of economic significance. There are vein and skarn occurrences with tungsten, tin, lead, zinc and precious metals peripheral to the deposit.In 1981, Placer Development Limited reported an ""undiluted mineable mineral reserve"" of 151 971 000 tonnes grading 0.063% Mo at a cutoff grade of 0.04% Mo and a strip ratio of 1.5:1."

Effects of microsilica and reactive alumina type on flowability, flow decay and working time of Al2O3-SiC-C castables for blast furnace trough were investigated. The results show that at a targeted self flow values of (80 ± 10)%, water demand markedly decreases with increased microsilica addition. The nature of reactive alumina has a strong influence on flowability of the castables. Higher microsilica content contributes to a longer working time. The flow decays gradually until the working time and then drops abruptly. In addition, microsilica have positive effect on both cold strength and hot strength.

The austenitic and ferritic stainless steels do not undergo any phase transformation that induces very fine grains in the product through thermomechanical processing as practiced in most other steels. Considerable grain refinement can be achieved by intense multistage deformation descending through warm to cold working; notably multi-axial forging of bulk material can attain high strains with diminished risk of cracking. Hot working to improve ductility yields finer grain sizes as the T is reduced and strain rate E raised; increased strain has limited effect due to the steady state regime. Ferritic steels develop subgrains with size diminishing as E rises and T falls with the advantage of retained strain hardening; recrystallization delivers grains several times the cell size. In austenitic steels, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) provides finer grains at higher E and lower T with a lower limit due to intergranular cracking. The DRX grains contain a strengthening substructure that can easily be retained by quenching; if static recrystallization is allowed to occur the grain size rises markedly. Multistage rolling with diminishing T is able to provide grain refinement to the same degree as straining at the finishing T yet provides better ductility. grains on recrystallization. As a result of the strain induced transformation to martensite, small subzero deformations of austenitic or duplex steels produce very high dislocation densities that yield marked grain refinement when they revert upon reheating.

Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. A large contribution here is the new joint venture PolyMet Solutions that was founded by SMS group and Mettop, an Austrian engineering company, with the objective to develop new technical solutions for the primary copper production lines as well as for non-ferrous metals starting with the primary smelting of concentrate and ending with the electrolysis. PolyMet Solutions provides the process know-how whereas SMS group supplies the plants and equipment and Mettop the key components. SMS group and Mettop also cooperate in the field of tankhouse technology. Together with Montanwerke Brixlegg AG, Mettop has developed together with a parallel flow technology (METTOP-BRX Technology), allowing a current efficiency of above 98 % at a current density of 420 A/m², which is a milestone in copper electrolysis. For the secondary copper production route, SMS group and PolyMet Solutions developed an innovative refining furnace (PolyRefine) for the smelting and refining of copper scrap. The refined copper is directly charged to the Contirod line to produce copper rods and wires. The innovative cooling solutions of SMS and PolyMet Solutions come into play where furnaces have to stand the highest loads and stresses, for instance in areas of very high temperatures or temperature fluctuations, aggressive exhaust gases and slags, or at critical spots such as taphole areas. Custom-tailored cooling systems for furnace vessels make sure varying loads are compensated in a targeted and effective manner. The solutions include air cooling, spray cooling, cooling technologies with integrated copper elements such as CFM (Composite Furnace Modular) cooling systems, plate and finger coolers. The major innovation in the field of furnace cooling is the ILTEC (Ionic Liquid Cooling) Technology which paves the way for increased plant safety. This revolutionary, patented cooling technology is jointly marketed by Mettop and SMS group. It permits water-free cooling to be implemented and thus makes operation safe wherever it is applied. INTRODUCTION Non-ferrous metals or NF metals are changing the world. There is no modern industrial sector that can do without these valuable metals. Non-ferrous metals find their applications in smartphones, tablets and computers. These materials with their particular properties are the basis of our modern life. The importance of the non-ferrous metals market is reflected by two figures. In 2018, the production of non-ferrous metals was worth more than 237 billion Euros. This contrasts with 255 billion Euros of the value of iron and ferro- alloy production in the same year (International Organizing Comittee for the World Mining Congresses, 2018). Hence, the NF metal industry is almost as important as the iron and steel industry. SMS group is well prepared for this huge market and for growing future challenges. Canada's only current tungsten producer started up in 1962 with a small open-pit mine on the Flat River , 180 air miles north of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. The orebody was in a contact-metamorphic skarn zone and contained about 1.5 million tons of ore grading an estimated 2.47% W03 and 0.5% copper. Near the end of the open pit , a new zone was discovered on the lower limb of the same structure, and the decision to go underground was made in 1972. The new "E Zone" contains over 4 million tons of ore grading an estimated 1.6% W03 and 0.28% Cu , and has been supplying the concentrator at about 175,0 00 tons/ year since late 1974. A continuing program of change and up-grading is necessary in the conversion from a seasonal open-pit mine with limited life to an underground operation with twenty years of reserves. Changes are necessary in plant and services as well as the mine. Also, environmental protection requirements have changed from rudimentary to rigorous over the life of the operation. This paper sums up the changes in the operation since 1971 and outlines the changes yet to come.

An innovative mixed-chloride process for the separation of iron from lateritic ore is described. The separation of Fe(III) from leach liquor is an important process step for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. The patented process of Process Research ORTECH Inc. uses a lixiviant containing hydrochloric acid (HCl) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for the leaching of lateritic ores/concentrates followed by the selective solvent extraction step of Fe(III) over other value metals such as Ni and Co. The use of MgCl2 increases the activity of the hydrogen ion in the lixiviant, which reduces the consumption of HCl in the leaching stage and enhances the formation of HFeCl4-, thereby increasing the solvent extraction efficiency of Fe(III) with ketone. The process produces high purity iron oxide (Fe2O3) and regenerates HCl by the pyrohydrolysis of the FeCl3 rich pregnant strip solution. The developed process flowsheet is in closed loop, economically attractive and environmentally friendly.

Data on world-wide geophysical activity in mining exploration programs are collected annually by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists' Geo-physical Activity Committee as part of a continuing service to the industry. The data are obtained by sending out questionnaires to all organizations which are known to be carrying out mining geophysical work; the organizations canvassed include mining companies, contractors, government departments and universities. The questionnaire is divided into three sections; namely, ground methods, airborne methods and research. The data compiled from the questionnaires show that world-wide utilization of mining geophysical methods reached a new high in 1967 with total expenditures of (U .S.) $32,323,240. This was divided as follows: ground methods, $18,106,785; airborne methods, $10,-123,405; and research, $4,093,050. For the ground methods, most money was spent on the induced polarization technique ($5,681,780); electromagne-tic methods were second in reported expenditures ($2,010,900). The total reported geophysical line mileage flown was 1,275,072 line miles, with aeromagnetic surveying being the most popular airborne method. The total amount spent on aeromagnetic surveys was $5,832,564 for 895,420 line miles. This gives an average cost of (U.S.)$6.50 per line mile.

Introduction The Flin Flon deposit was discovered by Tom Creighton, an experienced prospector and trapper, who in 1914 made his headquarters at The Pas, Manitoba, and still lives there. The discovery was made in the fall of 1914, and Creighton and his associates spent the next summer in investigating the find. In August of 1915 the first claims were located. The property was optioned to Hayden Stone & Company, and in the spring of 1916 they started a diamond-drill campaign. Hayden Stone spent $50,000 on the property and, among other things, completed over 7,500 feet of diamond drilling. The ore not being as high grade as expected, and also being complex in character, Hayden Stone then abandoned their option. In the spring of 1917, Messrs. Earle, Faskin and associates took an option on the property and started an extensive drilling campaign. This campaign accomplished approximately 18,000 feet of drilling and secured for the Faskin interests a 32 per cent interest in the property. In 1920, W. B. Thompson and The Mining Corporation of Canada secured an option, and, while this option was in force, sunk two shafts in the ore-zone and did a considerable amount of drifting and cross-cutting in the ore to study the manner in which it occurred in place, and, by actual channel sampling, to check the grade indicated by the previously accomplished diamond drilling. All of this work had indicated that an ore-body existed on the property containing at least 18,000,000 tons of ore, assaying as follows: gold, 0.074 oz./ton; silver, 1.06 oz./ton; copper, 1.71 per cent; and zinc, ). 45 per cent (1). Complete analyses of composites from the drill holes showed that the ore was very complex in character. It contained the above values in gold, silver, copper, and zinc, as well as large amounts of sulphur and iron, and traces of lead, arsenic, antimony, cobalt, and various other metals. Although the ore was obviously pyritic in character, pyritic smelting, the usual method of treating this class of ore, could not be used to beneficiate the ore with any reasonable expectation of making such a venture a financial success, since coke and coal landed at Flin Flon would be expensive, and siliceous flux was known to be scarce locally and low in grade. The property therefore lay idle until 1925.

Operating the underground marble quarries effectively, it is important to evaluate the deposit blocks economically which are affected by the suitability of the topography and configuration of bedding. The joint sets within the deposit and the spacing between these discontinuties are also of great importance. In this study, the marble deposits that could be geomechanically eligible for underground excavation have been selected throughout Turkey and these selected reserves have been classified accordingly by Q-Rating System. These classified marble deposits that forms groups of 1,2, and 3 (groups were determined by evaluating the O-rating, topography, quarry situation, cracks, joints etc.) are convenient for this type of production. Nevertheless, when the auxiliary factors (topography, location, production method etc.) regarding the deposit have also been investigated, the most convenient sub-group of deposits (Afyon Tiger Skin, Burdur Beige, Diyarbakir Pink and Mugla White) have emerged. The sizing of the pillars have been performed utilising Bieniawski?s stress profile. The LAMODEL software, developed by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), USA and run under the laminated displacement discontinuity method, has been used to size the pillars. This work brings in a novel opportunity to Turkey, in which no underground marble quarry has been attempted up-to-date similar to its several examples in Italy, USA, etc. This study serves as a reference for the marble operators and for the pioneering application of laminated displacement discontinuity method in hard rocks.

"A series of tests was conducted on Carol Lake iron ore, which contains about 38 wt % hematite and 19 wt % magnetite, to establish a flowsheet for high weight yield by spirals. A pilot plant was run in parallel with the IOC concentrator to simultaneously test two flowsheets on the same feed material. The IOC concentrator processes the ore by treating it directly in a spiral circuit, whereas the pilot plant used a laconite flowsheet which had a low intensity magnetic separator (LIMS) at the front of the circuit. The LIMS produced a non-magnetic (hematite-rich) product and a magnetic (magnetite-rich) product prior to treating the ore in two separate spiral circuits. The results from about 150 tests were evaluated by chemical assays and materials balancing techniques, and a selected test was evaluated by the image analysis and materials balancing technique.The image analysis and materials balancing evaluation showed that a higher hematite recovery was obtained by the hematite spiral circuit than by the IOC concentrator spiral circuit, and a slightly lower magnetite recovery by the magnetite spiral circuit than by the IOC concentrator spiral circuit. Furthermore the hematite recovery by hematite spirals was higher than the magnetite recovery by magnetite spirals. The better hematite recovery was achieved because a higher liberation is obtained for hematite than for magnetite, and the hematite in the Carol Lake ore has a narrower grain size range than magnetite. Consequently, better spiral control can be maintained when processing a hematite-rich spiral feed, than when processing a magnetite-rich spiral feed. Since the feed to the IOC concentrator spiral is a mixture of hematite and magnetite, an intermediate hematite recovery is obtained by the IOC concentrator. INTRODUCTIONA study of characteristics that affect recoveries of hematite and magnetite from the Carol Lake ores of the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), was carried out in connection with a project on designing a flowsheet for maximum weight yields. A pilot plant using a taconite flowsheet was run in parallel with the existing IOC concentrator which uses a classical iron ore flowsheet. About 150 tests were run to compare iron recoveries and weight yields by the spirals in the two flowsheets. Better iron recoveries were indicated for the taconite flowsheet, but the results were not consistent and the reasons for the observed differences were not apparent. The material from one test (Test 61), which gave better iron recoveries for the taconite flowsheet, was evaluated by the image analysis and materials balancing technique. A suite of samples was taken from 5 points in the IOC concentrator and from 8 points in a pilot plant (taconite flowsheet). The samples were analyzed to compare the behaviours of the Carol Lake hematite and magnetite in the spirals of the two flowsheets. The results provided a sound basis for further tests in designing a high weight yield flow sheet."

Thus it can be seen that upfront modelling of a design concept, or modelling of manufacturing processes in a plant, can play an important role in effectively ensuring the overall design and manufacturing route is carried out in an expeditious manner. In the paper various scenarios are considered with respect to modelling the microstructure and/or process, in various manufacturing processes. Also considered are the effects of service condition on the manufactured product in terms of creep and fatigue.

In most of the smelters, the management of flue dust has a double objective: the control of minor elements in the anodes and the management of volatiles compounds that can cause contamination due to fugitive gas emissions. This is a special concern when high content of Va elements (As, Sb & Bi) are present in concentrates. We present the results of the experimental study to prove the principle of a novel process that recovers, via volatilization, the As, Sb and Bi in the flue dust as gaseous sulfides, due to a previous sulfidization. In the case of as control any further classical treatment for its stabilization is possible from the gas. The clean calcine can be returned to the smelter avoiding any concentration of these minor elements in the circuit. This process is now tested at pilot scale and shows better indices on carbon footprint than the classical hydrometallurgical process for flue dust.

The properties required for a com-pound to form useful thermoelectric materials are described. Uranium compounds which might have these properties are reviewed. Several of these compounds have been prepared and fabricated into compacts. The apparatus used for hot pressing, and for the measurement of thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, is described. Detailed attention has been given to the properties of the nitrides. Preliminary studies on a number of other uranium compounds are reported. The figures of merit of the best materials so far examined are one-tenth of those necessary for a useful thermo-electric material. THE efficiency of thermoelectric materials for power generation and cooling is determined by their figure of merit, Z = a2 a/K, where a, a and K are thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, respectively. It is well known that the largest values of Z are achieved with semiconductors (1). "GeneralThe Malartic Gold Fields mill is presently treating ore from four different companies. The ore is delivered by truck, by the shipper, and dumped into the Malartic Gold Fields ore bin. This ore varies in size from 'Run of mine' to minus 8 11, All ore is crushed to pass a 3/ 8 11 x 4 11 cross slotted screen.Weighing and SamplingAfter crushing the ore passes over an adequate-weigher (250 T .P.H. capacity) on its way to the fine ore bins. This weigher has a remote counter at the sampling point.A 36” Vezin sampler cuts 15% from the ore stream as it enters the mill bins. This portion is elevated, by means of a short belt conveyor, to feed the No. 2 Vezin sampler. (This elevation is necessary to give headroom for the following machines). The ore on the conveyor is levelled to give a uniform stream to the second sample cutter. The second, third and fourth cutters are 2411 •The No. 2 Vezin sampler cuts 19% from its feed and this portion falls directly into a 1611 x 1011 Denver rolls crusher. This crusher reduces the ore to -1/ 8 11 , approximately. The discharge from the rolls crusher falls on a revolving circular plate with scraper, which gives a uniform stream to the No. 3 Vezin sampler.The No. 3 Vezin cuts 10% from its feed. This portion falls on another revolving plate to give a uniform stream to feed No. 4 Vezin."

"Pulang Copper Mine is located in Shangri-La county, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with currently defined copper reserve of 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal and an average grade of 0.34% Cu. The mineralized zone in a dome shape is 2,300 m long, 600–800 m wide, and 1,000 m high. At present, the project is at a construction phase, with a first-stage mining and processing capacity of 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. Ore haulage is planned via a drift and ore pass development system. The cavability of mineralized rock is classified into three types (II, III, IV), with type III accounting for more than 98% of the total reserves. The cavability of the orebody is generally considered to be good and block caving mining method is planned. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are adopted for the mineral processing. The tailing dam construction method is a center-line method.INTRODUCTIONAs the China's largest underground nonferrous mine, Pulang Copper Mine is located in the northeast of Shangri-La County, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. It is 62 km northeast of Shangri-La city. Shangri-La County is a Tibetan-dominated, multiple-ethnic region, with a population of approximately 163,000 in 2009. The county is rich in mineral and water resources, thriving with tourism. Its economy is also dominated by agriculture. To date, the defined copper reserves at the Pulang Copper Mine is 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal at an average grade of 0.34% Cu. In addition, it contains a gold reserve of 145 tonnes, a silver reserve of 2,754 tonnes, a molybdenum reserve of 0.19 million tonnes, and a sulphur reserve of 10.5 million tonnes. The first-stage mining and processing capacity is planned at 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. When it ramps up to this production rate, the mine will produce copper concentrate containing 50,000 tonnes of copper and molybdenum concentrate containing 968 tonnes of molybdenum. A drift and ore pass system is planned for ore haulage and mining method is a block caving method. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are considered for mineral processing. A center line dam is adopted for the tailing dam construction (Feng, 2010; Feng, Li, & Wang, 2011; China Enfi Engineering Corporation, 2014)."

INTRODUCTION The object of the present paper is to discuss, from a geological point of view, the practical results obtained by the authors with the method of the 'resistivity map of the subsoil' in the study of various mining problems. Some of the studies described date from 1920, 1922, and 1923. They are, therefore, quite old, at least as far as geophysical research is concerned (1). Others, on the contrary, are very recent (2). We shall deal only very briefly with the theoretical and technical sides of the processes employed. This paper has, essentially, a practical purpose, and it has seemed unnecessary to enter into a detailed discussion of the methods. Such a discussion cannot be presented without introducing ,quite. Complex considerations both of mathematics and experimental physics, which interest only the geophysicist: whose work is highly specialized.

Abstract - Most of the gold in the Late Archean Witwatersrand Basin is of detrital origin but, in its present form, it is metamorphosed. The only relict detrital features preserved are the morpho­logical characteristics of some placer gold particles. Regional burial metamorphism in the shallower and deeper levels of the Witwatersrand Supergroup reached temperatures around 300°C and 350°C at pressures between 2 kbar and 3 kbar, respectively , estimated from phase relations, chlorite-chloritoid exchange thermometry and chlorite thermometry . Metamorphism of the gold involved compositional homogenization of individual gold particles and partial recrystallization. Various infiltration events caused the partial mobilization of the gold at slightly lower temperatures, between 240°C and 300°C. These infiltrations can be related to crustal extension during the deposition of massive carbonate sequences of the Transvaal Supergroup (around 2.5 Ga), and later to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, and to the Vredefort event around 2.0 Ga ago. The mobility of the gold was dependent on the sulfur fugacity prevailing in a particular horizon which, in turn, was deter­ mined by the amount of pyrite (and other sulfides) present in that horizon. With the sulfur fugacity being controlled by stratigraphy, low fluid:rock ratios in a pyrite-rich horizon were most conducive for the mobilization of the gold. Thus, long-range gold mobilization in the Witwatersrand Basin can be expected to be the exception rather than the rule.
