Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

"Planning for coal beneficiation in the electric utility industry is relatively complex, involving the coordination of experts and specialists in a broad range of fields, as well as compliance with a wide variety of government regulations.This paper examines the role of the planner, reviews possible benefits of coal beneficiation, identifies potential problems and illustrates a typical planning schedule.The steps involved in the planning process are:Step I-Bench- and pilot- washability studyStep 2- Wash plant designStep 3- Power plant and boiler designStep 4-Mine designStep 5-Major environmental and technical problems to address.IntroductionElectrical utilities and coal have a long and intimate relationship . Cleaned coal is becoming an increasingly popular fuel with the utilities for a variety of reasons. Generally, the greatest impetus to burn a cleaned or prepared coal fuel comes from the need to control airborne pollutants.Long-range planning is a standard practice for electric utilities, forecasts of demand must be made well into the future. Since the lead time required to provide new facilities is often as long as 10 years and the cost very high , planning becomes an important task.For a utility that owns and directs the operation of its coal mines, the mine planning or fuel acquisition planning takes on the magnitude of other corporate planning functions. It is from this perspective that a utility would view coal preparation. Except for the interaction of a coal-fi red plant on the actual mine design the planning considerations o f a beneficiating facility for a captive mine or a contract raw coal supply are about the same. Because TransAlta Utilities is currently supplied from captive mines, this discussion will tend to focus in that direction.It is the role of a planner to plan. This is easy to say but it is not always easy to do. Often we are working within a context that resembles the geological time scale. Frequently the objectives are not clearly defined when we begin and ultimately our plans are tested in the waters of government regulations and cost benefit analyses .Planning for beneficiation of Plains coal, or any coal, provides just such a test. The planner's role in this endeavour requires a wide vision. While parts of the process may be amenable to classical methods of project scheduling, the broad range of subjects and interaction of seemingly unrelated tasks is sure to obscure some of the considerations that must be made. Therefore, the planner's chief role is coordinating the work of many experts and specialists toward the final objective.Among the specialists are combustion , geo technical, mining, civil , and mineral processing engineers , geologists, hydrogeologists, soil, and reclamation experts to list a few.When one considers coal beneficiation, the planning part o f that consideration is probably more complex than any other single engineering function. Due to the company's location in the Alberta Plains and the proximity o f the mine to the thermal generating station, this paper will tend to emphasize that situation.Beneficiation may offer some advantages over run-of-mine coal to the power plant opeator. Some of these advantages are: removal of a contaminant, power plant efficiency gains , lower plant capital costs (for new plants), possible lower mining costs."

In the present work TLP bonding of Inconel 617 is investigated. The influence of the main processing parameters i.e. time and thickness of the interlayer were studied with optical and scanning electron microscopy. Boron containing interlayers with two different thicknesses were used and the influence of various holding times from 5 min to 24 hours on the microstructure of the bond region was investigated. The results indicated that, for the testing temperature of 1065°C and holding times above 2 hours with an interlayer of 25.4 microns thick no liquid phase was observed. The same phenomenon occurred only after 6 hours for a 76.2 microns thick interlayer. Precipitate growth started at grain boundaries and continued inside the grains. The composition, size and morphology of the precipitates were studied using electron microprobe analysis. No noticeable changes were observed in the grain size of the base metal with increasing holding times.

To further emphasis the bullish view they point to the emergence of India for follow through demand. The bears remain convinced China?s growth is unsustainable and with higher interest rates and high oil prices, the United States economy is poised to slow. Both groups can make a convincing argument and both will be proven right in the fullness of time. Profitability and balance sheet strength for the mining industry has rarely been better. Is this a time to be bold or cautious? In this paper, the author will address the dilemma facing today?s management as they pursue growth and try to minimize risk.

Waste-activated carbon generated by gold ore processing plants that employ carbon adsorption technologies may contain very high gold values and represent a potential source of extra revenue. In this research, two methods that augment combustion of waste-activated carbon are evaluated. These are mechano-chemical activation and charcoal-enhanced ashing. It was found that mechano-chemical activation caused structural transformation of the waste carbon, which resulted in a reduction in the temperature for complete oxidation from above 700oC to 450oC. Complete oxidation was also achieved at the same furnace temperature, for a combined sample of waste-activated carbon and 50% by weight of wood charcoal. In both cases, gold was extracted from the ash by conventional cyanidation, with recoveries greater than 98% from a head grade of 3.2 kg/t.

"The research is aimed at solving the problem of increasing the extraction of gold from refractory ores, which are the main source of growth in gold production in the next decades. The purpose of the research is the development and scientific substantiation of the reagent modes for flotation extracting of gold from refractory ores using eco-friendly low-cost herbal modifiers (HM), providing increase in gold recovery and quality of gold concentrates. In the course of research laboratory techniques for the preparation of experimental samples of HM were developed, which included the sequence of operations of grinding Heraclium leaves and stems grinding, 2-stages extraction at a temperature of 50-60 °C, short-term ultrasonic treatment, filtration and subsequent unification of extracts. According to the developed method, the experimental samples of HM and conducted research were tested to analyze their sorption and flotation activity related to the extraction of gold from refractory gold ores.New data on adsorption and flotation properties of Heraclium stems and leaves extracts (HSE) in selective flotation of Au-sulfide minerals were obtained using UV-spectroscopy, scanning electronic and laser microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The dimensions and shapes of adsorbed hydrophilic films of herbal reagents were identified and mechanism of formation of stable insoluble compounds on the surface of minerals in flotation was explained.Research flotation tests carried out on samples of refractory gold ore of one of Russia deposits showed the possibility of effective use of herbal modifiers to improve qualitative and quantitative indicators of enrichment compared with the standard reagent regime. New reagent modes, using herbal modifiers in an amount of 5 to 10 ml of the extract (300 - 600 g / t, respectively) improves the quality of the concentrate: gold content attains 14.7 g / t, 1.34 times higher than in the baseline experiment and provides a gain of 3.13% extraction.The developed reagent regime with herbal modifiers is the author's original design, patented (patent of the Russian Federation) and have no analogues in the world of mineral processing. Actual application of new plant extracts as modifiers in flotation of sulfide minerals is the possibility of replacing of highly toxic chemical compounds by environmentally safe substances of plant origin. Implementation of the developed methods of extracting gold from refractory minerals with herbal modifiers will help to improve gold recovery at 3-5% and the quality concentrate of not less than 1.2 times, leading to higher productivity and a reduction of the negative man-made effects on the environment ."

Friction stir processing (FSP) is used to produce wrought microstructures at the surface of sand-cast aerospace grade magnesium alloy ZE41A-T5. It is found that the microstructure is significantly refined in the stir zone and the flow arm. The stir zone is largely comprised of equiaxed magnesium grains of approximately 4.5 pm compared with about 50 µm in the base cast material. In the stir zone, however, abnormal growth of some grains is also observed. Vickers microindentation hardness tests indicated that the stir zone experiences some increases in hardness. Single surface passes with low distortion, lack of pores and cracks were successfully obtained indicating the great potential of the FSP technique for modifying, improving and repairing magnesium alloy castings. This will probably open new opportunities to apply magnesium alloys in aerospace industry.

The distribution and behavior of As, Pb and Zn elements in the copper smelting process were investigated using thermodynamics. The differences between thermodynamics evaluation and practical smelting processes were analyzed. The main factors affecting the distribution of the elements are oxygen enrichment in blowing, copper matte grade and smelting temperature. In general, the distribution ratio of As, Pb and Zn to off gas increases with the smelting temperature and decreases with oxygen enrichment in blowing. Meanwhile, their distributions in matte decreases and that in slag increases with the increase of copper matte grade. There is some gap in distributions between thermodynamics evaluation and practical smelting processes. INTRODUCTION The copper concentrates usually contain a number of minor elements, the control of which in copper smelting processes is often a key to the quality of the anode copper produced and may also have a bearing on the overall economics of the process (Yang et al., 2017). Knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the minor elements in slag is very important in the control of the slagging reactions (Takeda Y, Ishiwata & Yazawa, 2007). In addition, the environmental contamination caused by the minor elements associated with copper-bearing ores, such as As, Pb and Zn, has become more and more important (Wang, 2004). Arsenic, lead and antimony, which are all carcinogenic metalloid elements, are usually contained in iron-rich wastes, and theirs emissions are considered to be one of the foremost environmental concerns (Wang, 2004). It is important to elucidate the elements distribution of them in the reducing-matte smelting process. The distributions of As, Pb and Zn elements in the copper smelting process are dependent on many factors, including the temperature, raw material composition, reduction atmosphere, concentration level, and slag chemistry etc. (Chen L Z, Xu X, 2016). Generally, these minor elements mainly distribute in phases of gas, copper matte and slag in the smelting process (Shu, Wang, & Qu, 2016). The arsenic exists mainly in the form of sulfo-arsenides in the copper concentrate, and it will decompose and be oxidized in the smelting process (Chen & Lu, 2016). Part of the products, including AsS, AsO, As2 and As2O3, evaporates into the gaseous state, and some other part enters into slag phase in the form of As2O3 and As2O5 (Wang, Guo, & Tian, 2017). Meanwhile, the As2O3 in the slag phase can also be reduced to metallic As and combine with Cu, S, Fe forming Cu3As2, As2S3 and Fe3As2, and then enter into copper matte. During the copper smelting process, about 50% of zinc enters into slag phase in the form of ZnO and 45% exists in the copper matte in the form of ZnS. Little volatizes into the gas phase. Most lead exists in forms of PbS and PbO in the copper concentrate, and it is mainly distributed in copper matte in the smelting process (Zheng & Lin, 2015).

"This paper examines the increasing need for mechanical-electrical people within the industry and some of the reasons why such a shortfall exists. It is suggested that, in part, it is image related. The present industry-education relationship in addressing the situation is examined and some thoughts are expressed on how these may be built on, in order to help solve the problem of attracting people to this critical area.IntroductionAs a long-time proponent of plant engineering and maintenance as a management function, I would like to review the progress made by the industry/ educational approaches in satisfying the needs in that area. In doing so, I would like to make the following points:1) that there has been an accelerating shortfall of mechanical-electrical people relative to the needs of the industry;2) that the condition will probably get worse before it gets better; ,3) that the past industry I educational approaches to alleviate the problem have met with limited success; and finally4) I would like to review some of the things being done and consider how these efforts might be extended."

"Abstract - The Lilypad Lakes property is host to a group of Ta-mineralized dikes that occur over an area of at least 10 km2. Field relationships are consistent with a syn- to late syn-tectonic timing for their emplacement (with respect to the major regional D1 episode of deformation), with several of the dikes exhibiting a steeply dipping, open, S- to M- to Z-shaped fold geometry. Individual dikes range up to 30 m wide (Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke), have strike lengths of up to 750 m (e.g., JJ Dyke), and are continuous to depths of greater than 250 m (e.g., Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke). Typically, they display sharp intrusive contacts characterized by the development of thin, holmquistite-rich haloes. The Tamineralized dikes are comprised of silica- and alumina-rich, sodic, granitic pegmatites that display extreme levels of geochemical fractionation (K/Rb typically < 10.0, as low as 2.2; Nb/Ta typically < 0.20, as low as 0.03), and enrichments in an economically important group of lithophile elements, most notably Li, Rb, Cs, and Ta. Geochemical assays of individual surface grab and drill core samples have yielded values as high as 1.51 wt.% Li2O, 1.25 wt.% Rb2O, 6.21 wt.% Cs2O, and 0.108 wt.% Ta2O5. Diamond drilling has established the presence of wide (~20 m), potentially ore-grade intersections of Ta mineralization (>0.045 wt.% Ta2O5) in both the Rubellite and the Pollucite Dykes.Three Ta-oxide minerals (microlite, wodginite, manganotantalite) of primary origin predominate in the Ta-mineralized dikes, where they occur as fine, disseminated grains in the albite-rich pegmatite matrix. The sequence of crystallization is typically manganotantalite wodginite microlite, which conforms to a well-established paragenetic sequence for rare-element granitic pegmatites in general. All three of the primary Ta oxides are characterized by a high degree of chemical purity (e.g., average Ta concentrations in microlite from 77-79 wt.% Ta2O5), a compositional feature consistent with the extreme levels of geochemical fractionation characteristic of the host granitic pegmatites, and one that indicates that the Lilypad Lakes pegmatites are likely to produce Ta mineral concentrates of the very highest quality.Locally, a second generation of Ta minerals is present, restricted to small vugs in the pegmatite matrix that are surrounded by fine aggregates of K-rich mica or clay. The secondary Ta minerals are dominated by microlite, which is typically intergrown with fluorite and Fe-sulphides, and is distinguished from its primary counterpart by its lower Ta content (around 70 wt.% Ta2O5) and much higher concentration of uranium (up to 9 wt.% UO2). Also, secondary microlite consistently yields low analytical totals from electron microprobe analysis, suggesting that it is H2O-rich. The presence of this second, vug-related generation of microlite, together with the occurrence of localized networks of crosscutting fractures that host high concentrations of Cs and Rb (in the minerals pollucite and Rb-Kfeldspar), suggests that a late-stage, fluid-dominated metasomatic/hydrothermal event may have been important in certain sections of the dikes, and has effected a redistribution of the economically important elements Ta and Cs."

The Homestake gold mine is one of the largest and oldest continuously operating gold mines in orth Ame rica. To date this mine has produced in excess of 128.000.000 tons of ore containing almost 34 million ounces of gold . Gold mine ralization is restricted to the Homestake Formation. This unit is a metamorphosed iron-formation which is enclosed by pellitic metasedime nts below (Poorman Formation) and a pellitic to qua rt zitic unit (Elli son Formation) above. The e ntire Precambrian sequence. in the Lead area. has been subjected to a multi-stage defo rmation episode which ha c reated an extremely complex structural setting for the Homestake orebodies. Metamorphic grade inc reases from greenschi st ro amphibolite in a northeast d irecti on acros the mine area. Present thickness of the Home take fo rmation va ric from O to »400 fee t. The amount of thicke ning and th inning which is attributable to tectonic deformation or original sedimenta ry di fferences is not known. Orebodies constitute onl y a small pe rcentage of the Homestake Formation and do not occur along a pa rticul ar stratigraphic pos ition within the unit. Gold i assoc iated with inc reased py rrhotite and a rsenopyrite concentrations within the iron formation. Inc reased \ cin qua rt z development and chl oritic alteration usuall y accompany this minerali zation. Local remobilizati on of mine ralization due to metamorphi sm has occurred. Homestake mine ralization has been shown to be of sy ngeneti c origin . Because no feeder zones have yet been recognized a di stal source for the mine ralization is inferred .

"Goldcorp is evaluating the potential for economic reprocessing of historic tailings at several sites, including the Aunor A facility located in Timmins. The overall project is investigating the ability to recover value, remove sulphide minerals and alternative tailings re-deposition strategies. Desulphurization of tailings will eliminate potential acid generation while improved tailings re-deposition could reduce long-term liabilities and closure costs. Through a task-share project between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp, tailings obtained from Aunor A site have been characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The selected tailing samples contain about 2 g/t of gold. Mineralogical analysis has identified coarse agglomerates bound with gypsum and significant free gold, confirmed by high recoveries in cyanide leach tests. However, despite no evidence of surface passivation on the minerals, conventional flotation techniques were found to be ineffective in concentrating gold or sulphides due to the high fines content and highly agglomerated particles.INTRODUCTION Aunor Mine is one of the historic mines that belongs to Porcupine Gold Mines (PGM) in Timmins, Ontario. PGM has undertaken an extensive mine closure program to remediate the legacy and closed mines with the funding supported by operating mines since 2006. Over the course of 100 years of operation in the Porcupine camp, it is estimated (Stevens et al., 2013) that about 130 million tonnes of tailings have been generated. Aunor Mine produced 2.5 million troy ounces of gold between 1940 and 1984, while processing over 7.6 million tons of ore. The original gold grade of Aunor Mine ores was about 10 g/t. With 95% gold recovery at the time, an estimate of 0.5 g/t of gold remains in the Aunor Mine tailings. Aunor Mine has two tailings impoundment areas: designated as Aunor A and Aunor B. The two sites are similar in size, about 7 hectares each. The amount of tailings in the Aunor A site alone is about 3.2 million tonnes. In 2017, bulk tailings were sampled from five designated locations in Aunor A. They were characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The bulk tailings samples contained about 10% total sulphur, 10% iron, 2% arsenic and 2 g/t of gold. The prime objective of this collaborative work between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp is to facilitate the timely development and deployment of innovative tailings reprocessing solutions, specifically in the areas of desulphurization, and recovery of metals. This work targeted specific tailings of interest to Goldcorp which goals are to improve its environmental footprint and to reduce long-term liability. Thus, it is imperative to look for innovative reprocessing options that can overcome not only technological challenges but also achieve economic benefits to offset the costs associated with reprocessing the tailings. Moreover, the greater goal is to demonstrate and deploy tailings reprocessing solutions to solve one of the industry’s most difficult challenges for a sustainable mining industry in Canada."

"10.1. IntroductionAs discussed by Westland (1981), the six platinum-group elements (PGE) belong to the Group VIII transition metals, to which iron, nickel and cobalt also belong. The chemical similarity between these nine metals accounts for the fact that they tend to be concentrated together as a result of geological processes. These processes started to effect the distribution of these metals at the very beginning of the earth's history.The first line in Table 1 gives the concentration of nickel and certain other Group VIII transition metals in carbonaceous chondrites, those meteorites with a composition that is believed to reflect best the composition of our planetary system apart from hydrogen and helium. The second line is the estimated concentration of the same elements in the earth as a whole. It is seen that these two estimates are quite similar, the earth being perhaps 2 to 3 times richer in these particular metals than the planetary system as a whole. The reason for this is not fully understood, but it may be due to the earth being formed by the accumulation and capture of a greater proportion of iron (and therefore siderophile-rich) than stoney (and therefore siderophile-poor) planetesimals than the planetary system itself.The third line in Table 1 is the average composition of the crust of the earth. With the exception of iron, all of the Group VIII transition elements are rare in the crust, present at concentrations of It tOO to Itt ,000 of that of the bulk earth. This is because the outstanding chemical characteristic of this group of elements is their siderophile nature; that is, their tendency to alloy with metallic iron. Because of this, once the earth became molten very early in its life history, these elements dissolved in the molten iron present at this stage and were removed from the outer accessible parts as this dense liquid sank to the centre of the earth to form the core. Although iron was the main instrument of concentration of the Group VIII metals, its much greater over-all abundance and its ability to combine with oxygen more easily than the others in the group means that significant amounts still remain in the oxidized portions of the earth.The fact that most of the Group VIII metals are available to use in workable concentrations at all is that they are 5 to 30 times more concentrated in the earth's mantle than the crust, as shown in line 4 of Table I. There has been a constant, if slow, interchange of matter between the mantle and the overlying crust throughout most of the earth's history and, under certain circumstances, this interchange has given rise to economic concentrations of metals."

It marks two-thirds of a century of service by the Institute to the people of the mineral industry and two-thirds of the century that Sir Wilfred Laurier said ""belongs to Canada."" As we meet here today within the historic walls of Canada's oldest city, a city that looks back on three hundred and fifty years of progress, I am reminded that it is almost a third of a century ago -in April, 1934 -that here in Quebec I first attended an Annual General Meeting of the Institute. It occurred to me that it might be appropriate to examine briefly the change that the middle third of this century has brought in the affairs of the mineral industry and, with some trepidation, to consider the prospect for the third that lies ahead.Opinions differ as to the relative importance of factors that have been responsible for the expansion and growth of Canada in its first hundred years. Some will say that it has been due to the abundance and fertility of agricultural land, others to the early enterprise of the railroads, and financiers believe that the banking system has been a major factor; -the fisherman -the forester -the teacher -each has his own view. I suspect, however, that most of us here would subscribe to the thesis of T. A. Rickard -miner, author, imperialist -who wrote, a gene-ration ago, ""Trade follows the flag, but the flag follows the pick,"" and thus agree that the finest contribution to progress, to wealth, to extension of frontiers and to inter-national trade has been provided by the mineral industry."

"Large-diameter flotation columns are subject to severe axial mixing which has reduced column recovery and has generally limited it to cleaner applications. It has been assumed that columns with diameter greater than 1 m should be baffled to reduce axial mixing, but little work has been reported quantifying the effectiveness of baffling. Tests were done on a 0.2 m by 2 m column fitted with baffles of different geometry. It was generally found that the inclusion of baffles in the column worsened rather than improved mixing conditions in the column. This is explained in terms of a model for the effect of poor gas distribution on the behaviour of the column; this showed that under typical conditions a 16% excess of gas flux in the one compartment of a two-compartment column could result in one of the compartments being ""dead"" (i.e. with no net flow of slurry through it), resulting in a substantial loss of performance. The quality of mixing in the laboratory column was only reliably improved when the baffle was raised so that its top was positioned above the froth-slurry interface level. It should be possible to increase column recovery substantially with this configuration. The improved residence time distribution also means that columns can be used more effectively in roughing and scavenging applications. IntroductionFlotation columns have generally been used in cleaner applications, starting with their dramatic success at Mines Gaspe(1). Their lack of applications as roughers and scavengers is probably due to their poor residence time distribution (RID) when compared to the conventional cells they would replace. Espinosa-Gomez et al,(2) recently used them in rougher applications but installed three columns in series, presumably to cope with this disadvantage.Dobby and Finch in their seminal papersl(3,4) on the scale-up of flotation columns were the first to quantify the impact of axial mixing on the performance of industrial flotation columns. Laplante et al.(5) collected further data from the literature for column diameter D, ranging between 5 cm and 183 cm, gas superficial velocity Jg ranging between 0.7 cm/s and 2.8 cm/s and per cent solids in the feed S ranging between 3% and 52%. These data were analyzed with reference to the axial mixing model using the boundary conditions for closed vessels (the latter are more appropriate for flotation columns but the model is more difficult to use because analytical solutions for the RID are not available). "The mechanical behaviour of AA6082 is a function of the extrusion conditions and in particular, the quench rate after extrusion. It is well known that precipitation of Mg-Si phases on grain boundaries during quenching can negatively affect the ductility of the alloy. In this study, AA6082 alloys containing 0.5 wt. % Mn and 0.15 wt. % Cr were direct chill (DC) cast, homogenized and then extruded to produce 3 mm x 42 mm strips. The microstructure in the as-extruded strips was unrecrystallized due to the Zener-Smith drag from the Mn/Cr dispersoids. It was shown that a solution treatment of 5 minutes at 560°C did not significantly affecting the as-extruded microstructure but if the as-extruded strip was cold rolled prior to heating, recrystallization occurred concurrently with the solution treatment. As such, 3 initial microstructures were produced, i.e. unrecrystallized and recrystallized with a grain size of 9 and 40 µm. After the solution treatment, controlled cooling experiments were conducted using the Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator with cooling rates of 10, 25, 80°C/s as well as water quenched. The mechanical properties (e.g. yield stress, fracture stress and fracture strain) were determined from tensile tests for the different combinations of initial microstructure and cooling rate. The relationship between the quench rate and precipitation of Mg-Si phases on grain boundaries was examined by FEG-SEM. It was found that the yield stress decreased as the cooling rate decreased and that there was complex relationship between the fracture properties and the microstructure.INTRODUCTION As the automotive industry strives to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions with the goal of reducing the environmental impact, there is a need for lighter vehicles. As a result, aluminum alloys are gaining popularity to replace steel parts as structural components. An exemplar of this is the Ford F-150 pickup truck which has an aluminum body and is ˜750 pounds lighter than the previous steel version of the vehicle. The structure includes a mix of aluminum sheet, extrusions and cast alloys. The current research is concerned with the performance of aluminum extrusions in applications such as side rails, crash tubes and other structural parts. These components experience a combination of bending, stretching and folding both during the forming of the part and in service, e.g. crash of a vehicle. There is a need to have detailed information on the influence of processing on final material performance, in particular the cooling rate after extrusion."

"Grande Cache Coal (GCC), an investor-owned Alberta company, is in the final stages of the regulatory process leading to the resumption of coal mining in the Smoky River Coal Field of Alberta. Although many opportunities for low-cost, high-yield mining remained on the property, GCC opted for a long-term production plan that ensures stability for the local economy, sustainable use of the resources in the area, environmental responsibility and a satisfactory return for its investors.GCC entered the Alberta coal approval process in late 2000 with a public disclosure document. In October 2001, GCC formally submitted an application for mining approval and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the government and the public. The application covered the proposed Grande Cache Coal project, which includes the No. 7 underground mine, No. 8 surface mine and coal processing operations. The EIA provided a comprehensive investigation of environmental sensitivities in the project area, matched with environmental protection programs. The project is based on commencement of operations in late 2002. GCC’s plans are founded on a commitment to sustainable development and has framed this commitment in the context of a long-range mine development plan that will sustain the community of Grande Cache over the next 25 years. The Grande Cache coalfields offer extensive coal reserves and opportunities, for both surface and underground mining. Combining highly productive U.S.-style room and- pillar underground mining methods and conventional truck-and-shovel open pit mining, GCC’s approach to sustainable development encompasses community involvement and reclamation of mine sites to productive land uses after mining."
