From a material cycles perspective all processes are interconnected and consequently a process can never be evaluated as an isolated and independent unit. This also holds true for the evaluated co-incineration options. Environmental and sustainability issues for example, such as raw material and energy utilisation or air pollution, are a resultant of the whole system of industrial activities. It is therefore important, not to optimise a single process or industrial activity, but rather the whole system. Although engineering procedures for the design of individual industrial units are well developed, the problem of determining the best arrangement of these interconnected units is often far more difficult. Regulation that manages the arrangement of the units for waste processing is still under construction. In the evaluation of co-incineration, analogous principle from process control can be used: feedforward control. This principle includes the determination of which outlets can be used for all process outputs, hence avoidance of any æunusableÆ products or wastes possibly arising from co-incineration. To establish the extent, to which produced wastes are usable, a system overview is necessary, in addition to in-depth information on the subsystems, which produce and can consume wastes. Material cycles modelling can be used as the basis for a tool that supports the development of a suitable playing field. It should provide overview of the system and in-depth information on its subsystems. This tool then represents an attempt to bridge the gap between æholisticÆ industrial ecology and process engineering.

The mining industry has undergone a profound and transformative shift in recent years, driven by the rapid advancement of emerging technologies such as automation, digitalisation, and electrification. These technological innovations have not only revolutionised operational efficiency and productivity but have also introduced an imperative need for new and innovative approaches to conducting mining activities. Specifically, the mines of the future face a new series of complex challenges when planning and developing greenfield or brownfield mining projects in the 21st century. These challenges include greater operational depths, higher seismicity levels, higher rock temperatures, increased environmental constraints and sustainability requirements, a higher degree of interoperability, lack of skilled workforce, and the need for sustainable and eco-friendly mining practices. Consequently, there is an essential need to formulate novel strategies and robust planning methodologies that re-evaluate how mines are planned, executed, and managed, from the early exploration stages to the post-mining era and the consequent uses of mine sites. This research focuses on identifying the factors influencing the implementation of modern technologies, such as autonomous machinery in mining operations, and their impact on mining method selection and longterm mine planning. The findings underscore a crucial need for a paradigm shift in how mines are planned and developed, going beyond mining method selection, which primarily focuses on geological and economic factors, and must evolve to incorporate the multifaceted implications of modern mining operations.

The data referred to here consists of project reports, manufacturer's equipment literature and papers concerning almost every aspect of the excavation process. Why is it then, that many projects that employ full face tunnel boring machines (TBMs), on average perform significantly less than the peak performances reported in this industry?

The sulfurisation-flotation process was unsuccessful when initially applied to the oxidised Pb-Zn ore in Lanping County of Yunnan Province China. A comprehensive mineralogical study indicates that the problem is caused by the soluble salt gypsum in the Lanping oxidised ore, which produces a large amount of Ca2+ cations. The Ca2+ cations react with S2- anions (from sodium sulfide) in preference to Zn2+ and Pb2+ forming calcium sulfide, and make it difficult to form zinc and lead sulfides on the surfaces of the respective oxidised Zn and Pb minerals. In addition, the calcium sulfide formation consumes a large quantity of the available sodium sulfide, further inhibiting the sulfurisation process. The efficiency of the sulfurisation of oxidised Zn and Pb minerals has been improved greatly by the pretreatment removal of gypsum, with the added benefit of the required dosage of sodium sulfide being substantially reduced.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

Computer software is an integral part of mining operations today with many sites using six or more software packages on a daily basis. However, the use of these different programs generates the need for substantial staff training. The current trend toward large integrated packages to solve this problem is counter-productive because the relatively small companies producing specialised mining software do not have the resources to develop quality software with all the required features. Software standards are being proposed by various parties but recent history indicates these will be unsuccessful. An alternative approach is suggested using the various standards which have been developed for the Windows operating system.

With the use of 36 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Co, it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts is noted on this line (see Figure 1). Thus at a glance it is possible to see the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this clifficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component.As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5000 feet bored (see Figure 2).

The financing of smaller resource projects has proven to be a difficult problem for promoters and financiers alike as very often such projects have not met the requirements of available financing methods and promoters have equally found it difficult to establish credibility, management and technical ability with potential financing sources. Solutions to the dilemma in which many of these projects find themselves are not readily apparent but will need to be found if the full potential of Australia's resources is to be realised. The implementation of the Mining Further Amendment) Act, 1970, and later the Coal Mining Act, 1973, placed a requirement on the Department of Mines to accept an initiative in relation to coal exploration and coal mine development which does not apply in the case of other minerals. It is necessary to consider the exploration of the total coal resources of the State when considering exploration rather than one individual basin or deposit. If the level of knowledge of the coal resources in these basins is considered in relation to their potential for development it is possible to allocate broad scale priorities to their assessment. Due to the enormity of the task which involves a conservative estimate of in excess of 400 000 m of drilling to reach a broad reconnaissance level of understanding the involvement of industry with the Department in the exploration programme is necessary. North Broken Hill Limited came into prominence as a producing mine at· the commencement of the present century, when a great many of the disabilities experienced in earlier mining operations th:rough lack of adequate stope filling had been overcome.The northern or narrower ore-body was first mined in the upper levels and, in the early stages, no great difficulty in mining was experienced. In depth, under the influence of its northerly pitch,. the wide southern ore-body entered the North mine between the 400 and 500-ft. levels. Owing to its flat dip and the relatively weak nature of the hanging wall and footwall, the value of close filling was recognized and this policy has been followed throughout the life of the mine. This feature undoubtedly contributed to the freedomfrom "creep" action to which some of the older mines had been subjected.The Broken Hill lead-zinc-silver ore-bodies occur as well defined replacements of favou:rable horizons, in intensely folded Pre-Cambrian sedimentaries. In the North mine two main replacement zones occur, the Gre being found where the beds are involved in a certain set of minor folds. The resulting ore-bodies are roughly elliptical in cross-section, the long axis of one being north-east of, and somewhat offset from the long axis of the other. The ore-bodies pitch eastwards at 40° and dip northwards at 60° in a fairly regularmanner. The southern Ore-body has an average length of 700 feet and an average width of 90 feet with a maximum width of 230 feet, whilst the nonhern ore-body on the lower levels averages 500 feet long and 40 feet wide.

Large quantities of brown coal are excava ted from open cut mines in the Latrobe Valley to fire the base load thermal power stations of the Victorian Electricity System. Most of the coal is removed using bucketwheel excavators which have been modified or specially designed for the conditions encountered. The actual digging efficiency of the bucketwheel excavator is strongly influenced by such factors as wheel speed, slewing speed and tooth design and arrangement. The coal deposit, although not difficult to work, is not uniform and the operation of the machine is influenced by the stability re- quirements of the excavation face.

The Broken Hill orebodies have 'traditionally been mined by cut and fill trethods. In the mid-1950's New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited experimented with sublevel longhole open stoping but did not pursue the method due to inefficient loading and poor fragmentation. The introduction of longhole open stoping in 1968 was a radical change and was necessary to enable the profitable extraction of lower grade orebodies and this method is now used for 55% of the production from The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines.

Urban railway systems need high invest- ments, especially if their routes and stations have to be placed in the subsurface. In the FRG the construction and equipment cost of urban underground railway systems are in the range of 60 to 100 Mill DM per km tunnel. For this reason, track sections on the surface and on elevated structures are used as far as that is possible. Considering whole systems, the costs are in a range from to 45 Mill DM per km length for a metro system with about 80 % of its tracks and stations in tunnels and from 20 to 25 Mill DM per km for a light railway system with about 25 % subsurface infra= structure. The amount of route lengths in tunnels depends on the size of a city, the situation regarding above ground structure and free space on the surface, the level of service quality which has to be achieved with the railway system etc. Despite of the urgent needs to improve the transport conditions there very often arise doubts if an urban railway system is really necessary and can be justified in an economic sense. The experience from many cities around the world shows, that there arise a lot of benefits from urban railway systems, especially with larger sections placed under- ground. They are to be found in the interests of the operator (f.e. operating costs), the user (travel time, quality of service etc.) and regarding social aspects (environmental protection, accidents, consumption of energy Etc.).

The approach is an evolving one and is based on experience gained over the past five years undertaking environmental and social impact assessment for a range of mining and other projects. With the main thrust now on quality and a cleaner product a different approach was needed in the operation of sizing screens. New screen mats with many different aperture configurations have been developed using rubber and plastics.to replace the traditional screen mat of woven wire or punched plate.

Indonesia has the largest coal reserves in the south-east Asian region. According to estimates from the World Energy Confer- ence, it has reserves of 18 billion mt lignite, 4.4 billion mt sub-bituminous coal and 774 million mt bituminous coal (Wyllie,1988). In recent years, substitution of coal for oil in power plants has been the goal of the Indonesian government since proven deposits of coal are about five times as large as national hydrocarbon reserves and most of Indonesia's power stations are still oil fired. Recently a coal fired power plant has been built in Java Barat, which will have a full capacity of about 3000 MW. It is intended to supply coal for this power plant from Bukit Asam mining area (South Sumatra). Coals from Bukit Asam - which are of the lignite or brown coal type - usually contain considerable moisture . It should be noted that reference to moisture in coal pertains to the total moisture content. This is comprised of what is commonly termed as equilibrium moisture and surface moisture. Surface moisture typically affects combustion process as well as pulveriser performance since it possibly influences the relative ease with which coal may be ground. In practice, the surface moisture produces agglomeration of the fines in the pulverising zone and reduces pulveriser drying capacity because of the inability to remove the fines as quickly as they are produced. This agglomeration has also the same effect as coarse coal during the combustion process because the surface area available for the chemical reaction is reduced, hence the combustion efficiency is also reduced. The influence of the moisture of some coals on their grindability (Hardgrove Grindability Index) has been previously correlated by several authors; some of them will be mentioned later. Those correlations, however, could not be immediately applied to any coal since it is still believed that there are other factors which influence the grindability of the coal, such as type and rank of the coal. The relationship between coal moisture content and its grindability has been investigated by Ellmann and Belter (1955). It was found that, for North Dakota lignites, the grindability varied as the moisture content changed. In Britain, Fitton, Hughes and Hurley (1957) stated that, for Bilsthorpe coal, over a wide range of free moisture content (from air-dried to about 30 per cent moisture), the Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) remains virtually unchanged. In addition to that, it was suggested that it would be slightly advantageous to dry the coal below its air-dried moisture content (at temperature ¦ 100¦C) to increase the ease with which coal could be ground, especially for low-volatile coal and high-volatile non-caking coal. Furthermore, it was also concluded that a broad relationship appeared between coal rank and Grindability.

Traditionally mill operators have been employed with varying educational backgrounds with little if any formal training in aspects of mineral processing. Pasminco Mining-Rosebery, in line with other organisations, saw the need for a prerequisite entry level for operators to enter the industry. After initial discussions between various West Coast Mines personnel, union and government representatives, an industry working group was formed in 1989 with the aim of developing a traineeship suitable for the mineral processing industry. Training and technical representatives from four of the West Coast Mines and TAFE were commissioned with the curriculum development. The resultant course, which is recognised under the Australian Traineeship system, involved an integrated on and off-the-job training program, including 13 weeks of formal off-the-job instruction.
