A Robbins Raise Drill Model 61R was used to provide one 7' diameter shaft 1050' deep in Clutha Development's exploratory mine at Blackwater in Central Queensland and two 7' diameter shafts 1450' deep at their South Clifton mine on the Illawarra Coast of New South Wales.

The Curragh mine has complex operating conditions. The mine operates in four seams to produce two coal qualities and is divided into five pits which have different qualities and coal preparation characteristics. The combination of all of the necessary controls to achieve maximum resource utilisation has necessitated the development of suitable software to assist the quality control engineering function. The required software had to be able to plan the optimum yield of coking coal whilst achieving the quality parameters for the coking coal and co-produced steam coal. The program has been designed to evaluate all of the mine faces available for coking coal production. The optimisation of coking coal production is planned and co-produced middlings steam coal determined. The optimum steam coal product is determined using the middlings in combination with bypass production.The computer software to carry out these functions has been designed by using an exploration data base as the raw data source. The program accesses this data and uses a coal preparation prediction program to determine the yield vs. ash relationship for each coal face. A linear program selects the optimum -combination based upon equal incremental ash values. The final output lists feed tonnages, coal preparation conditions, product tonnages and full coal quality data.

Phosphate induced stabilisation has been used to create passive iron phosphate coatings on pyrite and pyrrhotite. The formation of solid phosphate coatings on sulfide grains thereby inhibits sulfide oxidation. The aims of the study were to determine whether phosphate induced stabilisation could control sulfide oxidation and metal mobility in partly oxidised, polymineralic, sulfidic mine wastes. Waste materials were obtained from the acid mine drainage generating, abandoned Montalbion silver mine site, far north Queensland, Australia. The waste consists of quartz, kaolinite/illite, sulfide minerals (galena, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, sphalerite, pyrite, arsenopyrite), and pre- and post-mining oxidation products (hydrated Fe, Cu, Pb and alkali mineral salts). SEM observations of waste material treated with potassium orthophosphate showed that metal, metal-alkali and alkali phosphate coatings developed on all sulfides (with the exception of tetrahedrite). The abundance of phosphate phases was dependant on the availability of cations in solution for complexation with the phosphate anion. In turn, the release of cations was dependent on sulfide oxidation or the dissolution of efflorescent mineral salts. Experiments aiming to dissolve these phosphate coatings û using a strongly oxidising solution û showed that the phosphate coatings remained stable, preventing acid generation and metal release. The results of this study demonstrate that liquid phosphate stabilisers can suppress sulfide oxidation and immobilise metals in partly oxidised, polymineralic mine wastes.

The largest surface coal mine in North America requires complex materials handling infrastructure to fulfil the highly variable quality specifications of its contracts. These diverse demands, reflected in the arrival of numerous customer trains every day, necessitate the integration of information in every stage of production. To meet this goal, quality measurement, train line-up and mine planning processes are being integrated into local and remote control rooms. The effectiveness of such a system can only be measured by comparing decisions that are made with, and without, each of the individual integrated control systems. Traditionally, mine controllers use their experience, intuition or a variety of trial-and-error spreadsheets to determine the ideal materials handling flows needed to achieve the correct quality. These balanced decisions are complex since many factors must be considered such as the mine plan, fleet costs, quality variability and others; consequently mine controllers usually have widely varying success between crews.An evaluation model was developed to assess the impact of a decision support system (DSS) integrated in a control room for controlling the coal blending process. To this end, an ARENA-based simulator representing the whole production process can be used to pull performance and current materials handling settings directly either from the real-time systems in the mine, or from historical data. In this way, the same shift (breakdowns, cycle rates, etc) can be simulated and performance compared. Different settings of the DSS, in terms of what information is displayed and the methods for doing so, can be tested for effectiveness. The historical data are extracted directly from a corporate data warehouse, without altering the everyday working databases. At the same time, the simulator writes its results back into the same data warehouse structure, allowing the same KPI reports to be used to measure simulated shifts.

Working Capital requirements for resource projects are to a large extent, dependent on specific characteristics of the projects concerned. Important variables are the nature of the project and speed with which sales can be realised. The project's location is also important as this will influence inventory levels. Working capital requirements have a time profile, the present value of which can represent a significant portion of a projects overall capital needs. A significant component of a project's working capital is not readily recoverable or able to be reassigned should the project fail or be deferred.

Ore sorting has long been used to raise the efficiency and thus lower the environmental impact of mineral processing operations. It was first instituted as hand sorting, according to a humanly perceived difference in the ore, but is now automated using large mechanical sorters in order to meet the high tonnage throughput required in most minerals processing applications. In the past, ore sorting was generally used as a niche processing route when other approaches failed, and in this context, consequential environmental benefits are often not the first consideration in adopting sorting. When applicable, ore sorting offers environmental benefits in reductions in fines waste, reagent usage and energy consumption in milling. Although there are significant opportunities for the use of ore sorting technology in many minerals processing operations, industry applications, to date, have been limited mainly to the processing of diamonds, magnesite, talc and uranium ores. This limitation has principally been due to a lack of suitable sensing technologies for a wide range of ore types. The authors report on a wide-ranging review of the automated sorting of mineral ores, and in particular, on methods for discrimination of ore characteristics prior to mechanical sorting.

The Jacobs Sliding Floor (Floor) is experiencing a surprisingly long competitive life. The first Floor was used on the Camino Tunnel in California in 1960. At that time the Robbins Company had built only seven TBMs, and the future for such machines was considered doubtful by many, as compared to drill and blast methods. This was then, and still is, commonly called the "conventional" method. Robbins' TBM No. 8 was for the Hydro Electricity Commission of Tasmania (HEC) for their Poatina Hydro Project in 1961. In this writer's view, the Poatina experience was the start of successful hard rock boring machines. But, by coincidence, the HEC is using the newest Floor for their King River Hydro project, where driving with the Floor started in July 1986 on the King Tunnel. This paper examines the history and developments in both Floor design and other "conventional" tunnelling equipment, and the site specific conditions that have allowed this old concept to still be competitive in certain select situations. Parametric costing data and some actual progress records are included.

The Sydney Coalfield, Nova Scotia contains extensive undersea longwall mining operations which are expected to continue well into the 21st Century. A long term research program has been initiated by the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory to investigate the full spectrum of problems associated with undersea mining and develop specific guidelines for use by the mine operator. At present, research is centred on the detailed evaluation of existing undersea sub- sidence guidelines, the identification and development of instrumentation capable of moni- toring seafloor subsidence profiles and the effective sealing of offshore exploration boreholes. In addition, work is also planned to examine in situ strata permeability changes occurring between the mining horizon and seabed and the feasibility of using artificial islands.

Politicians and economists talk glibly about the so-called knowledge revolution. The reality is that knowledge is fundamental to economic progress. Consequently there have been many technological revolutions. The global impacts of the invention of the steam engine and the development of the frozen meat industry are well known. Another less publicised technological advance occurred in Central Otago late in the nineteenth century. This was the adaptation of the bucketladder dredge to the mining of placer deposits. A product of over 30 years experimentation and innovation, New Zealand dredging technology was taken to the Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco by R H Postlethwaite, a Dunedin based mining engineer. New Zealand-style dredges built by Risdon operated successfully in California, Alaska and the Yukon. Californian engineers assimilated the best features of the New Zealand dredges with American (Bucyrus) designs to produce a standard for the worldwide placer mining industry.

A trial embankment was constructed using coarse coal mine reject on a deposit of crusted coal mine tailings at New Hope Colliery, located in the Bundamba District of the West Moreton Coalfields in South East Queensland, Australia. The purpose of the trial embankment was to assess the load carrying capacity and settlement behaviour of the crusted tailings, including an assessment of strength gain in the tailings under the influence of the fill. Prior to construction of the trial embankment, a site investigation of the tailings deposit was carried out. This comprised vane shear strength testing, together with disturbed sampling and undisturbed block sampling for the purposes of laboratory testing. Following the site investigation, settlement plates and standpipes were installed at various depths and locations within the tailings in the vicinity of the proposed embankment. The instrumentation enabled the magnitudes and distributions of settlement and pore pressure within the tailings to be determined during and following construction of the embankment. The embankment was constructed using coarse reject in three equal lifts to a height of 3.0 m. The tailings sustained a maximum settlement under the weight of the fill of 290 mm, representing about 4.2 ii of the average initial thickness of the tailings and a loss of embankment height of about 9.7 %. It is estimated that in less than a decade, high-grade iron ore reserves in South Africa will be depleted, leaving only low-grade ores with a dominant lithology of banded iron formation (BIF) hematite. BIF is a complex ore reserve as it is typically liberated below 1 mm, resulting in high energy costs. However, due to its abundance, its beneficiation potential should be evaluated to maximise recovery at an acceptable product grade. To develop a beneficiation program for BIF hematite, the first step is to determine the effect of two laboratory crushing techniques on mineralogical characteristics, specifically liberation and shape. For this study, the cone crusher and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) were used. The Electron MicroProbe Analysis (EMPA) and Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) were used to compare the mineralogical characteristics. The liberation characteristics for hematite are similar for both crushing techniques; however, HPGR preferentially liberates quartz. HPGR achieved 8– 12 per cent additional quartz liberation in the greater than 80 per cent and 100 per cent liberation classes respectively and specifically in +75 μm size range. Improved quartz liberation is associated with lower energy requirements for downstream milling and improved separation efficiencies for beneficiation units that operate in this size range. Both samples displayed similar shape characteristics; most particles were elongated smooth and the rest were elongated angular. Good hematite liberation is expected at grinds of 212 μm to 150 μm. Further consideration should be given to throughputs, energy efficiency and downstream equipment selection prior to selecting a crushing technique.

BHPÆs Cannington process plant was commissioned in October 1997. The Cannington ore contains high grades of silver, lead and zinc but also contains high levels of fluorine which must be removed to produce a marketable concentrate. As a consequence the plant is more complex than the typical base metal concentrator. Some of the features of the Cannington operation include a single stage autogenous mill, multiple stages of flotation cleaning, two leach circuits, pressure filtration and a paste fill plant. The start-up and achievement of design performance for new lead/zinc operations has traditionally taken much longer than for gold or copper operation and is littered with many tales of woe with feasibility targets often not achieved (Agarwal, Brown and Katrak, 1984; Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999; Leung, Andreatidis, Woodall and Alford, 1996; Sherman, 1999; Ward, 1998).

Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. The current trend in the UK towards the adoption of retreat longwall mining methods and the associated rapid development of the access drivages have exacerbated the environmental conditions experienced within these workings. There is a recognised need to improve the efficiency of the design and operation of mine ventilation systems in order to maintain an adequate environment and climate within these workings. Any improvement achieved in the quality, quantity and control of the delivered ventilation will assist in the provision of improved gas and dust dilution and climatic control. The paper presents an analysis of the psychrometric data recorded during the execution of a series of comprehensive climatic surveys conducted within two representative deep underground UK coal workings. The surveys were performed across two high production retreat longwall districts within UK Coal Ltd collieries. The surveys employed intrinsically safe psychrometric transducers and digital data-loggers to collect a continuous record of the mine climate over designated weekday production and weekend non-production periods. The transducers and data-logging units are capable of simultaneously measuring and digitally recording changes in the dry bulb temperature and the relative humidity at regular time intervals for extended periods of time.

The swelling process is an impor- tant problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from oedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the oedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.

A new understanding of the formation of black organic shales in the Illinois Basin has contributed to insights on how to produce methane from these complex reservoirs. These shales are far from simple shallow derived sediments but are in fact the result of a complex series of events which include the intermixing of volcanic detritus and the marine organic material, onlap successions and low energy turbiditic intraformational activity. This has led to a review of the commercial significance of the mid Devonian shales in the sedimentary basins of the eastern half of the USA. These shale sequences are also characterised by very little contribution from the underlying Lower Palaeozoic carbonate formations. The later diagenetic influences and the interaction of sea floor bacteria especially since the mid Devonian have lead to the creation of a major source of energy in the form of methane. Vast areas measured in 1000s of square kilometres are known to contain biogenically derived natural gas as methane. However, this vast resource produces very little gas due to abundance of illite which acts as a major adsorption mineral and creates a refractory situation where though there is abundant gas present the rate of release is clearly subeconomic. This paper will present the results of recent laboratory trials which have indicated that it is possible to create microfracturing using bacteria within the gas bearing shale sequence and also restart the methanogenesis process. As most coal bed methane environments have similar organically derived shales in direct relationship to the coal beds themselves then this paper has ramifications for this industry as well.

Tailings are generally deposited on or near to the mine sites, occupying the site area, and being an economic burden for mining companies. Tailings can cause several environmental impacts, such as leaking toxic substances and contaminating underground water, emitting greenhouse gases, and damaging natural bodies and wildlife. Geopolymerisation of mine waste effectively transforms mine waste into more valuable, environmentally friendly products. Geopolymers are inorganic aluminosilicate materials that are widely applied in the construction industry (Araya, Kraslawski and Cisternas, 2020). The high performance and the low-CO2 emission of geopolymers make this type of material potentially more desirable than ordinary cement, given that manufacturing one ton of traditional cement generates approximately 0.8 tons of CO2. This process is seen as a promising method for repurposing tailings and reducing the environmental impact of mining waste. However, the environmental impact of geopolymer production is not sufficiently comprehended (Mazzinghy et al, 2022). Moreover, geopolymerisation of mine waste can offer several economic benefits, including reduced waste management costs (Amari et al, 2019; He et al, 2022), reduced raw material costs, and potentially lower production costs. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the economic feasibility of the process. This study aims to demonstrate the potential environmental impacts of geopolymer concrete produced using mine wastes and industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS). For this, a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was conducted on different geopolymer mix designs, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions results were compared to the ordinary cement. LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental impact of geopolymerisation of mine wastes in various ways. One important impact category is GHG gas emissions, which contribute to climate change and is the focus of this study. Another aim of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of the geopolymerisation of mine wastes via economic analysis (EA) to identify the key economic factors and trade-offs associated with repurposing mine wastes through geopolymerisation.

The locality from where these specimens come is distant about 12 miles due south from the township of Bingara New South Wales, and is known locally as Carney's Reef, Barrack's Creek, Top Bingara. The formation traverses the western side of a serpentine spur from the main range, which runs through the country from the other side of Tamworth to Inverell, in the New England District. It has a due north and south trend, with an easterly underlay slightly out of the vertical. The formation has been opened up at different points for a distance of over two miles, and each place showing gold in the stone, and no place more than three to four chlins apart, the whole distance along the line of Reef being leased. The formation varies in thickness, the smallest being about 1 foot and the widest about 10 feet. The following is a list of properties, and description of work done on them at present. First south, and about one and a half miles from Hanion Brothers' old BalIarat claim due north, Court and patty hold a tenacre lease. The formation outcrops near the south boundary, and gold is obtainable in the stone. In the centre of the lease a costeen pit has cut the capping, which shows gold, and about two chains from the north boundary another one cuts the capping, also showing gold. The reef averages, where exposed on this property, 3 feet wide.
