Quite often the reserve assessor becomes enamored with the numbers gen- erated and forgets the basis for his assessment. The quality of the assess- ment can only be as good as the quality of the input data. The use of seismic data from the Gippsland Basin in assess- ing Esso/BHP's oil and gas reserves is an excellent example of this principle. By significantly improving the quality of seismic data, a much more reliable estimate of a field's reserve potential can be made. In addition, it provides the basis for further delineation drill- ing which, as recent experience in Gippsland has shown, often leads to increased reserves.

Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.

BHP New Zealand Steel produces iron from titaniferous ironsand by a direct reduction process comprising multi- hearth furnaces/rotary kilns/electric iron melters. The electric iron melter is a six-in-line rectangular submerged-arc furnace which takes the partially reduced ironsand (80% metallization) from the rotary kiln and completes the reduction process to produce iron of nominally 3% carbon. As the melter operates at around 1500 ¦C and under very hostile conditions, it is near-impossible to obtain any basic operating parameters such as the velocity and temperature distribution in the slag and in the molten iron. As a first attempt to understand the operating conditions inside the melter, a scaled room-temperature model using wax and water to represent the slag and iron, was constructed. This paper will report on some of the preliminary model results on the temperature distribution.

This paper gives some insights into what to look for when reviewing feasibility studies. The review by a third party is an important element of the risk management process and may be the last remaining opportunity to uncover errors, or identify and reduce project risks on paper before they are converted to financial disappointments, steel and concrete monuments to process failures or cost overruns. The mining industry has had a spotty record in the area of estimating initial capital costs and operational performance, even though the standard of feasibility studies is generally acknowledged to have improved in the last decades. Third party reviews rarely have the luxury of enough time and unlimited funds, so where should the reviewers focus their efforts to be most effective? Assuming that the project already apparently meets investment criteria, the authors suggest where and how to look among fundamental project parameters for signs that serious flaws exist that have the potential to become project killers. We also give advice on how to review cost estimates without becoming lost in the details. The paper is supported with numerous actual examples.

Myuna Colliery long term ventilation requirements were included as part of the overall planning of colliery construction and underground development. Ventilation, during the simultaneous sinking of two drifts and the downcast shaft, was accomplished by established methods of ducted exhaust and blower fans. Drivages for the 3 seam interconnections of shaft and drifts were ventilated by extension and duplication of the exhaust systems. Ventilation, for the below seam extension of the belt drift, construction of between seam and below seam bins, and the completion of a circular between seam drift, required a step by step changeover to a temporary main ventilation exhaust fan mounted adjacent to the top of the completed downcast shaft. The second, permanent upcast, shaft was commenced and colliery production started one seam at a time, using the transport drift, while the underground bins, belt and between seam drifts were completed. The uocast shaft was completed and a connection made in the upper seam, completing all contract mining and allowing the main fan to be erected. The COREXW process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (gene- ration of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including partial coking of the coal.

The concept of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and the organ- isation to achieve its construction are covered in the companion papers (Reference 1, 2) and will not be repeated here. The Victorian Railways, as well as being the eventual operator of the Loop when it is completed by MURLA, have also been responsible as "Contractors" to MURLA for the construction of the "cut and cover" or "box" tunnels and related approach works located on existing Railway property. These tunnel connections link the existing suburban system to the new underground works. The following tabulation indicates the significant work volume involved in this cut and cover tunnelling exercise and which is covered in some detail by this paper.

Coal mass strength properties must be estimated to obtain realistic estimates of coal pillar strength. The limitations of existing techniques for approximating these properties are discussed. The coal mass is anisotropic. The Hoek and Brown approach to rock mass property estimation is modified to allow for this. This approach requires the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) for the strata. In the normal case where bedding is sub-horizontal, these major planes of weakness have little effect on the strength of pillars. As a result of this the RMR must be measured parallel to bedding. This means that a significantly higher rating than that usually obtained for coal is observed. The use of mass strength property estimates in extant empirical relationships is outlined. At high width to height ratios, an acceleration in the rate of increase in pillar strength with increasing width to height ratio has been observed. The empirical relationship developed by Salamon (the so called squat pillar formula) takes account of this. This relationship was found to have significant limitations with respect to its universal application. Modifications are made to Bieniawski's empirical formula to extend its use to large width to height ratio (squat) pillars. This new squat pillar formula has none of the disadvantages associated with Salamon's relationship. Strain softening was incorporated into non-linear finite difference numerical modelling to estimate pillar strengths. The technique outlined above is used to obtain peak coal mass properties. Modelled pillar strength was found to be sensitive to both peak and post peak mass strength properties. Post peak properties were found to be difficult to obtain and required some back analysis. Modelling results were used to estimate both the strength of squat pillars and parameters for use in a new squat pillar empirical strength relationship.

The indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in the past has created a serious fire hazard in the bush of the northern New South Wales coalfields. Spontaneous or bushfire-induced combustion in large neglected dumps of this material has increased in recent years causing a rise in air pollution. Surface methods of coal waste disposal are still being practised, and in many cases new material is being added to old dumps, many of which are burning. CSI RO has conducted research on methods of preventing and controlling fires in coal waste and recommends practical methods of overcoming these problems. Some laboratory and on-site investigations are described and the hazards of improperly constructed dumps are considered. The available techniques of fire prevention and control are discussed in relation to Australian conditions. Proposals for the safe and economical disposal of coal waste are outlined.

The gas bubble energy generated by an explosive plays a major part. in the fragmentation, muckpile movement and damage produced. Previously, the interaction between gas pressure and the rock has been interpreted from a theoretical basis or a qualitative study of breakage mechanisms. A method to measure the fluctuations in gas pressure in rock adjacent to the blast has been developed. This peak pressure will vary with structure, as well as with distance and explosive type. The technique is simple to apply and can be used to observe the flow rate of gas at. varying distances. The apparent velocity of penetration is an indication of whether gas has travelled through pre-existing or blast induced cracks. The technique provides a ?n:eans of determining the suitability of an explosive for a given rock type, depending on the amount of displacement desired. The technique has application in optimir.irig throw blasting and predicting and controlling damage, particularly in highly structured rock masses.

Examples of recent mining advances are in mechanised roadheading, in different approaches to cutting technology, and in low height roof bolting.On the longwall face the mechanics of cutting are related to supplied energy as well as to dust make. In conveying both armoured face conveyors and conveyor belts are monitored. Roof support is not neglected and the continuous pumping of stowage slurries provides further options for longwall support. Surveying developments, particularly the gyro-theodolite, directional drilling. and shaft vehicle monitoring provide further examples of advances in control in coal mining activities.

Fragmentation variation laws in loading and non-loading areas are obtained by cement block model blasting experiments under various stemming lengths. A reasonable ratio between loading length and stemming length is worked out according to minimum average fragment size. The present continuous loading structure, for its very long length to be stemmed, leads to insufficient fragmentation in the upper part of bench. So a new loading structure with bottom air cushion is put forward. Application of modern electronic components make it possible to design the new modular telemonitoring system incorporating the best features of the older systems,widely employed in Polish collieries, eliminating their weak points. Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa MinesÆ cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite element program is described.
