Many underground mining methods rely on blasted rock moving under gravity to report to extraction points. Mining of orebodies dipping between 20 - 45 degrees poses a unique challenge for mining engineers in that a dip angle in this range will not allow the movement of broken ore down the footwall to the mucking horizon utilising gravity. This is more so in cases where the natural angle of repose of the rock is less than the dip of the orebody. Hence, innovative mining systems are necessary to mine this type of orebodies. In Australia, the method of uphole retreat panel stoping is commonly used to extract orebodies in the dip range of 20 - 45 degrees and thickness range of 5 - 15 m. In the Zambian Copperbelt a method called continuous retreat updip stoping is used for orebodies with similar dips and thicknesses. The mechanised form of this mining method has potential for application in the metalliferous mining industry in Australia. In this study a comparison is made between mechanised updip (MUDS) and transverse retreat stoping (TRS) methods. A hypothetical nickel sulphide orebody located in Western Australia is used as case study. The net present value for mechanised updip stoping is seven per cent higher than that of transverse retreat stoping based on the assumptions applied. Initial results of this study indicate that mechanised updip stoping can be adopted for Australian mining conditions. However, lack of significant local experience with the method is often cited as a reason for not adopting it even in situations where it is clearly the best option.

It has been a generally held concept that crushing operations were, by their nature, too simple to benefit from the implementation of advanced process control. The commissioning of an OCS¬ expert control system and image-based oversize detection system, VisioRock, at the Pilbara Iron Tom Price facility are dispelling these notions. A constraint-based OCS¬ expert control system has been designed and commissioned on the high-grade crushing and screening plant along with a vision-based oversize detection system functioning on six product conveyor belts. To date, the expert control has demonstrated the ability to increase production by maximising dynamic constraint utilisation. Dynamic constraint utilisation is a concept developed by Rio Tinto Technical Services for effectively evaluating constraint-based control logic performance. The VisioRock system has been installed and configured and has been operating for a period of several months. Currently, Tom Price and Metso personnel are working to define correct oversize detection thresholds. Details of the plant implementation are discussed.

Image analysis is more and more considered as a powerful tool for quantitative analysis of ores and concentrates. Apart from being very much dependent upon the quality of the imaging principle and the adequacy of the imaging sensor, quantitative image analysis is also the result of a long chain of material, image and pixel sampling strategies. The most reliable way to demonstrate the accuracy and the precision of modal analysis obtained from images is probably to use a blended material with known proportions of pure minerals and confront the results obtained from different analytical tools. This operation has been performed on a series of mineral blends mimicking the tailings of a flotation operation in a plant operating on massive sulfide mineralisation. The intention was to be able to better predict acid mine drainage potential from direct mineralogical observations. Selected sulfide minerals: pyrite (Py), pyrrhotite (Po), chalcopyrite (Cp) and sphalerite (Sp) were mixed as variable amounts within gangue minerals (quartz, calcite, dolomite and siderite). Typical blends contained six to ten per cent (Py); one to three per cent (Po); 0.5 to one per cent (Cp, Sp); 15 to 40 per cent carbonates and 40 to 75 per cent quartz by mass. The 1000 gram blends were carefully sampled and prepared for X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis by ICP-AES and optical microscopy image analysis (OMIA). Results obtained for the different analytical techniques are compared and discussed revealing the limits and strength of each method in the accurate quantification of sulfide and gangue minerals.

Copper-Cobalt hydrometallurgy has seen a resurgence in recent years with the development of projects in Zambia and the DRC. Many of the flow sheets are unique in their use of hydrometallurgical techniques to improve performance compared to the older types in current use. The emphasis has moved from direct copper electrowinning/stripping, with multiple stages of precipitation for removal of impurities and concentration of cobalt, to innovative use of solvent extraction and ion exchange with higher cobalt recoveries to final product. The poor quality direct electro-won copper has been supplanted with solvent extraction-electrowinning; with consequent production of LME 'A' quality metal. Many of the precipitation steps in cobalt recovery and concentration, have been replaced with solvent extraction; while the remaining precipitation stages have been enhanced with use of oxidants to improve impurity removal. Operating experience from two of these circuits has shown the benefits of the new technologies and the improved overall recovery of both copper and cobalt into higher quality products.

Tracking plant and personnel in mining operations provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including improved safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control and, in the future, monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques currently proposed and used for wireless tracking are radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID provide poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines and does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, however, most current equipment has not realised the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the Wireless Ad hoc System for Positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines and surface operations, where GPS reception is compromised by depth. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at fixed and known locations within the mine and tags attached to the plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus, wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging down to 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of testing in underground and surface operations showing the system achieving high ranging, hence localisation, accuracy.

Understanding the real utilisation of the available volumetric capacity of a conveyor is key to unlocking latent capacity or ‘debottlenecking’ existing plant. Conveyors are typically designed on the basis of conservative density and ore surcharge angle specifications, and consequently there is often latent volumetric capacity available.Laser scanning measurements of conveyor ore profiles has been undertaken on iron ore conveyors to gain an understanding of the actual surcharge angle and the available edge clearances. Iron ore producers seeking to extract maximum production from their assets have used these measurements to debottleneck existing plant and to revise the design criteria for future plant. The benefit is that latent capacity of existing plant can be unlocked and smaller and cheaper conveyors can be designed for future plant, maximising the return on capital. The gas dispersion properties that are the subjects of this communication include three measured parameters, gas superficial velocity (gas rate), gas holdup and bubble size, plus derived parameter, bubble surface area flux. Over the past ten years sensors to measure these parameters have been introduced and those originating from McGill University are briefly described. The sensors have seen extensive use in plant campaigns and experiences on four cell types at three sites are discussed. The impact of frother in controlling bubble size by retarding coalescence is illustrated, introducing the need to understand chemistry/machine interactions in interpreting gas dispersion results. An increase in Sauter mean bubble size (D32) with superficial gas velocity (gas rate, Jg) was found, which followed the empirical relationship where Do ~ 0.5 - 0.6 mm and C and n are fitted parameters dependent on the system (machine and chemistry). Following this trend in Db - Jg, consistent bubble surface area flux (Sb) - Jg trends are also observed. The trend in Sauter mean versus number mean (D10) is used to help interpret the nature of the distribution; as the means approach numerically, the distribution is narrowing. Analysing gas holdup versus gas rate shows both a dependence on location in the cell as well as cell position in a bank, factors which must be accounted for when comparing data from different plants and circuits. The instrumentation and methodologies being developed are presenting new opportunities for incorporating cell hydrodynamics into metallurgical diagnostics. A case study at one plant serves as illustration.

Frequency of reports on premature failure of rock bolts and cable bolts have increased in past two decades. Such a failure threatens both the safety of underground mine workers and the economic viability of the operations. Herein, we report on analysis of rock bolts and cable bolts failed recently in three underground mines in Australia. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were used to study the failed bolts. MPI showed a number of subcritical cracks on the surface of the bolts. The majority of the cracks in both cable bolts and rock bolts were initiated from the base of ribs (indentation) where the stress concentration was high. SEM examinations showed tearing topography surface (TTS) in all failed rock bolts and cable bolts. These indicated that the failure occurred through hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking (HISCC). In order to develop the HF-free flotation reagent system, the main objective of this investigation was to study the possibility of separation of quartz from feldspar using non-ionic surfactants as the collector. The non-ionic surfactants used were polyoxyethyl cethyl ether (PECE) and polyethylene glycol monocethyl ether (PGME). The flotation behaviour of quartz and microcline with PECE and PGME was investigated. Each surfactant was a good selective collector for quartz with its recovery being influenced by pH and surfactant concentration. Quartz is floated favourably by both types of polyoxyethylene non-ionic surfactant whereas microcline was not so much. The floatability of quartz increases as the oxyethylene length of surfactants increases. Zeta potential measurements in the system of PGME/mineral were also carried out. It was determined that in the absence of PGME the points of zero charge for quartz and microcline should be approximately at pH 2.5 and 1.8, respectively. The addition of PGME to the system causes both minerals to become less negatively charged. Differences in the zeta potential value between quartz and microcline, in the presence of PGME, were detected. It can be suggested that the interaction of the oxyethylene group to the microcline surface should not be as strong as that to the quartz surface. In the mixed surfactant system of PGME and dodecylamine acetate (DAA), a small addition of DAA causes drastic enhancement of quartz flotation in the wide pH range of 1 ~ 10. Rosebery Mine is situated on the west coast of Tasmania and is AustraliaÆs largest volcanic-hosted base and precious metals deposit (zinc, lead, copper, gold and silver). The milling operation has been producing zinc, lead and copper concentrates continuously for over 100 years. RoseberyÆs long life demonstrates the operation to be high grade, and high margin, capable of operating through several commodity price cycles. Paradoxically, throughout this long history the ælife-of-mineÆ as defined by proven and probable reserves has been short. Zinifex has demonstrated its commitment to discover the future of Rosebery with the growth project æProject HorizonsÆ. The aim of the project is to extend the life of mine beyond 2020, with an additional exploration expenditure of $19 million over three years. Despite the maturity of the deposit, early success has confirmed the potential with the discovery of new resources. Mine planning strategic studies are challenging established paradigms of mine production, throughput rates and metal cut-off grades. Discovering the optimal process rate for Rosebery, by examining the æHill of ValueÆ and underground mine optimisation is proving critical to the best exploitation of RoseberyÆs rich resources. The promise of finding a mine within a mine is being realised, with new lenses being delivered by exploration success and real grade/tonnage options optimised through dynamic mine planning. The future of Rosebery is co-dependent on these two areas of discovery. This ensures capital expenditure decisions are informed, to secure the next 20 years of wealth creation and beyond.

Gold Fields Australia (Gold Fields) has identified that improving productivity through more detailed shift planning and operational control of mining activities is a key driver to the success of their business. The Hamlet mine was chosen as a pilot site to trial a system that would allow production engineers and shift bosses to align the execution of short-term activities with the longer-term goals of the organisation.Gold Fields partnered with Deswik to introduce an on-site, collaborative, web-based system to allow mine planners to quickly build-up a detailed, activity-based, shift schedule for the coming week from the 13-week plan. Multiple stakeholders could then review and alter the plan, and then track and manage the execution of the activities.The system is designed to be integrated with production data capture systems to allow tracking of progress towards completion for each activity, as well as to plan and monitor the equipment operating in the mine. Integration of systems allowed engineers to use the large quantities of production data being captured to make informed decisions in the operations environment.The system replaced a complex set of spreadsheets that required expert users in Gold Fields to maintain. By capturing the data in a central database, the planning process is transparent and historic data from the execution of activities is available for analysis to improve productivity in the future.The system has ensured that the highest priority and critical path activities for the business are completed at the right time, improving the efficiency of operations.CITATION:Deucker, E and White, A, 2017. PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. A review of the DOZ extraction bolting design was conducted in November 2000. The aim of this review was to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the current design in relation to bolt length and spacing and to challenge some questions about the technical background of the design. For instance, the influence of the rock condition on the design. To review this bolting design, several books and papers are reviewed and several experienced people have been contacted to give their opinion. The methodology used for this review is:reviewing the technical background of current design; collecting ideas and alternatives; collecting data from books and personal communication and conducting analysis; and conclusion and proposed design.

The management of wear surfaces in mining operations has remained largely unchanged since the inception of mining. Sacrificial wear liners are installed on the inside of chutes, hoppers and other equipment used to transfer bulk ore to protect the asset from abrasive wear caused by the flow of material. These liners are generally replaced at fixed intervals which may be determined based on historical wear rates or may be driven by other maintenance requirements for that asset. This approach does not always yield satisfactory results, especially for critical assets where the impact of downtime on production can be substantial. For such assets, a condition-based maintenance strategy has the potential to significantly increase productivity and reduce the total cost of ownership associated with the asset. However, for such a strategy to be successful, timely information on the actual condition (remaining thickness) of the wear liners is essential. This paper describes the development and implementation of a wear monitoring system that can be used to remotely and continuously report on remaining liner material thickness in real time. It details some of the challenges that were overcome when developing the system, including the design of a patented thickness measuring system that can be used in a variety of liner materials and is tolerant to the presence of ore on the wear surface. The paper also explains how a cloud-based approach enables data from the wear sensors to be integrated into external systems such as a data historian, which has been demonstrated through a collaborative project with one of the largest iron ore producers in the Pilbara. This ability to combine real time liner thickness information with other data sources, such as throughput, provides the foundation for the transition to a condition-based maintenance strategy.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. Wiluna Mining Corporation are progressively re-entering the old Wiluna underground mining complex. The existing underground was abandoned in 2013 by previous owners and left to flood with water levels reaching above the East Pit portal and Happy Jack Pit portal and up to 300 m below surface in the Bulletin underground. Re-entering the mine commenced in 2017 with dewatering of the Bulletin decline. The underground development had been previously supported with friction bolts, with weld mesh in places. Until mid-2021 rehabilitation requirements were based on an external visual inspection of the installed ground support scheme. However, several incidents involving falls of ground due to corroded bolts have occurred during this time, showing that this approach was inadequate. The challenge the operation faced was should the entire decline be rehabilitated, the implication being not only a large rehabilitation cost but also the impact of severe delays to the mining schedule. The question was asked can the operation better understand the level of corrosion damage and potentially optimise rehabilitation requirements. A proposal to use a systematic approach to assess corrosion by environmental condition mapping, visual external corrosion assessment, and internal corrosion assessment via borehole camera inspections was provided and accepted by Wiluna Mining Corporation. The objective of this work was to produce a three-dimensional map showing the degree of corrosion on the reinforcement systems in the capital infrastructure, this would then be used to risk assess and prioritise rehabilitation requirements. This paper summarises the approach, methodology and results that provided the Wiluna mine planning team with information to enable planning of resources and budget to justify priorities of rehabilitation.

Sedimentary rock is a lithology that is commonly encountered in mining practices. Their properties, especially the resistance against weathering, are often of critical importance to long-term engineering stability due to their ubiquitous existence on the earth’s crust. The weathering of rocks is a complex process that involves physical degradation, chemical and biological erosions. In this study, the impact of physical weathering on four common sedimentary rocks, namely sandstone, siltstone, limestone and shale, are simulated in the laboratoryoratory environment taking into consideration the impact of preservation condition, temperature and time. In order to optimise the design of the experiment, Taguchi’s design of experiment method is implemented based on the L16 orthogonal array and selected simulation conditions. The weight and dimension variation, fracture intensity, slake durability, and uniaxial strengths of specimens are then tested to quantify the impact of weathering under various conditions. The results indicate that weathering significantly influences the strength of shale, siltstone and limestone but not sandstone. The impact of weathering on dimension variation is insignificant. For soft rocks, most physical weathering took place after second cycle of simulation, resulting in strength reduction up to 100 per cent (disintegration) but generally in a range from 28 per cent to 32 per cent. Additionally, time is the most important factor contributing to the physical weathering of weak rocks, followed by residual, preservation conditions and temperature. Last but not least, some shales, depending on the content of clay minerals, tend to develop significant fracturing or even disintegrate under the influence of weathering.

Located approximately 570km NNW of Adelaide in South Australia, the Olympic Dam mine (OD) is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper and gold resource and the largest uranium resource. Discovered in 1975 and going into production in 1988, the operation consists of a fully vertically integrated underground mine, mineral processing plant, copper smelter and refinery, as well as associated infrastructure. BHP achieved production of 203,000 tonnes of copper cathode plus associated by-products in financial year 2016. The immense size and high-grades of the Olympic Dam resource offer a range of growth pathways, making closure timing estimation and planning a challenge. Current estimates put the OD resource at approximately 79 million tonnes of copper. Major factors influencing the closure timing estimation, as a result of the large resource and grade tonnage profile, include the mining method that may be used and the downstream processing method, ultimately influencing such things as the total disturbance area and the extent of infrastructure to be demolished at the end of mine life. In addition, factors such as the mining and processing method and production rate have a direct impact on larger rehabilitation items such as the total number of tailings cells required.CITATION:Grant, D, Tyler, M and Hill, G, 2018. Significant improvements in the metallurgical performance at Pasminco Rosebery Mine have occurred over the last two years. Lead and silver recoveries have increased by more than ten per cent, lead concentrate grades are four per cent higher, zinc recoveries are up 1.5 per cent, and zinc concentrate grades have increased by two per cent. These impressive results have not occurred through the application of some new wonder reagent, but through the application of some fundamental metallurgical principals. The basic premise applied during this study was that to make an effective separation you must first achieve liberation. Therefore, the laboratory and plant studies examined the liberation characteristics within the lead circuit, and the impact of regrinding. The work demonstrated clearly that galena/sphalerite liberation was poor, and significantly impaired plant performance. Further, it was suggested that the application of lead regrinding of the lead scavenger concentrate and the lead first cleaner tailing would not only benefit lead metallurgy, but also improve sphalerite flotation. A similar approach was then applied to the zinc circuit. From these studies, solutions applying simple circuit changes utilising existing equipment were proposed and implemented. Further to the improvements in galena/sphalerite liberation, significant improvements in concentrate quality were achieved by reducing variation within the process. The implementation of changes in work practices negotiated in the Enterprise Agreement, employee contributions and specialist training also made a significant contribution to the unprecedented improvement in the lead and zinc flotation circuit performance. The results of these plant changes are discussed, along with the suggested scope for further improvement.

Brownfields geoscience measurement such as drilling and surface geophysics can be costly and it is often difficult to weigh the cost of data collection and processing against the value it unlocks at the time of extraction. This makes it difficult to prioritise geoscience expenditure and find the optimum intensity of geoscience activity across competing assets. There are multiple options for managing resource uncertainty and spatial variability through mine planning and resource engineering such as varying marketing strategy, adjusting stockpile or other infrastructure design and product blending. Consideration of these alongside increased data collection further complicates finding a comparable value of geoscience programs to determine the right blend of geoscience measurement and engineering controls. Concepts similar to Value of Information (VOI) analysis which is applied to strategic planning can be used to estimate the value of geoscience measurement and pit sequencing at tactical planning and operational timescales. This involves the quantification of resource uncertainty and prediction of how it will affect resource extraction. This paper outlines this process and demonstrates its use to prioritise geoscience at BHP Coal Assets. The value of infill drill programs in enabling operational stability is quantified and compared the value of engineering controls like increased stockpile capacity. This study supports that idea that the application of VOI methods to bulk mining at tactical time horizons has potential to inform geoscience planning and resource engineering not just separately, but as part of a unified strategy for managing resource uncertainty.
