Large diameter raise boring is a common raise excavation method in the Australian mining industry. Geotechnical investigations were conducted on several large diameter raise bore projects at Gwalia Mine to assess the potential for instability and potential back-reaming problems. A thorough geotechnical analysis and subsequent back-analysis was conducted on a vent raise excavated at 5.5 m diameter and 810 m length.The geotechnical investigation for the vent raise included collection of data from an acoustic televiewer survey that was conducted on the pilot hole. The survey results provided structural data and an insight into the effects of stress on the pilot hole. Structural analysis was conducted using a combination of information obtained from the acoustic televiewer survey and geotechnical logs of the diamond drill core drilled close to the site.Further information was collected from drillers’ plods from pilot hole drilling and back-reaming to conduct a back-analysis of the completed shaft, and this was compared with the structural analysis.The key finding from this review was that the acoustic televiewer survey of the pilot hole accurately identified locations with blocky conditions. This is an important supplement to the information available from the main geotechnical investigation hole, as this was offset from the shaft location over most of its path.CITATION:Stephenson, R M and Sandy, M P, 2014. The GRE46 Underground Project lies beneath the environmentally unique and culturally endowed shore of Lake Cowal. The ore body is open both along strike and at depth and is currently defined to a strike length of 1.5km and depth of 800m. The Warraga exploration decline commenced in March 2019 and represents the first stage of the Project, which is expected to underpin production at Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) for a period exceeding 10 years. Mining operations at Cowal commenced in 2005, following a period of over 20 years of exploration and permitting. In 2015 Evolution Mining (Cowal) Pty Limited (Evolution) acquired the operation from Barrick Gold Ltd (“Barrick”). Barrick had a life of mine plan that anticipated a cessation of operations in 2024 at a processing rate not exceeding 7.5 Mtpa. Evolution have grown the regional endowment considerably and have a currently approved mine life out to 2032 with a currently approved maximum processing rate of 9.8 Mtpa. This paper examines the history, current status and future path of one part of that plan, the GRE-46 Underground Project. Topics for discussion include discovery, Mineral Resource growth under different ownership philosophies, planning, permitting and commissioning of an exploration decline and bulk sampling project, and integration with the possible future mine. Environmental sensitivities affecting regulatory approvals, timeframes, technical challenges, opportunities and solutions are discussed, along with the path required to fast-track production from the existing 14Mt, 1.4Moz Mineral Resource while complying with the requirements of modern, responsible project development stewardship.

This paper gives an overview of the ASHRAE LibHuAirProp, CoolProp and REFPROP software packages. These packages were predominantly developed for heating, refrigerating and air conditioning engineers and the refrigeration and steam power industries, although CoolProp and REFPROP also cover combustible gases. The main aim of this paper is to highlight the existence capabilities and status of the different packages and where they can be used. The paper gives typical examples of the use of these software packages, specifically as Excel add-ins, and provides a comparison of results of typical mine psychometric and gas drainage calculations using the packages and more traditional ventilation and gas drainage calculation methods. The paper also introduces a hybrid method that improves accuracy compared to traditional methods. In typical mine situations, the use of software packages is probably not required; however, with the increasing accuracy of instruments, potential greenhouse emission costs and the sale of mine gas, more accurate measurements and calculations can potentially save (or make) significant sums of money.CITATION:Harvey, T J M, 2015. The Kundana underground narrow vein gold mine had a recent history of large and damaging seismic events. Following a period of seismic events on 30 July 2001, in which nine miners were temporarily entrapped at depth due to falls of ground in several parts of the decline, the mine operation was required to develop a seismic management system to mitigate seismic risk to the operation. A micro seismic systems and boundary element modelling of mine sequence highlighted large-scale footwall faults and the mining of gold bearing shear veins to be focal structures for seismic energy release between depths of 300 m to the base of mining at 650 m. The integration of seismic data, identification of geological structures and mapping of zones of failed rockmass led to the successful generation of a non linear boundary element model and a seismic hazard strategy. This enabled mine sequences to be assessed daily, monthly and periodically for potential seismic hazards and therefore assigned both economic and personnel risks for the recovery of the ore reserve at the Kundana Underground Operation.

The ore deposits investigated are composed primarily of hcmatite and can be grouped into three categories depending on the amount of leaching of silica and carbonate which has occurred from the original iron formation, and on the amount of recrystallization of the hematite. Minor constituents are magnetite. goethite, and quartz.Texturally. there are five different types of hematite, formed at different stages during the genesis of the ores.These are1. anhedral hematite grains formed by recrystallization of hematite already present in the original iron formation.2. hematite formed by martitization of euhedral magnetite, 3. massive aggregates of fine- to medium-grain hematite formed by recrystallization of (l) and (2).4. tabular or prismatic hematite grains occurring around the boundaries of the massive aggregates or martite euhedra. and in fractures and5. specular hematite. which is present in fractures in ore types (l) to (4).Minor and trace-element analyses, determined using an electron-probe microanalyser. indicated that only silica (less than 0·01 per cent) and cobalt (less than 0·002 per cent) were present in the magnetite and hematite from unaltered iron formation and in the hematite from the ores. Low concentrations of trace elements are typical of magnetite in ores formed as marine precipitates. On the basis of the analyses alone. it proved impossible to distinguish between the five hematite types. A determination of the variation in rare-earth trace element contents between iron oxides in the iron formation and iron oxides in the ores indicates that the rare earths were depleted during ore formation. A possible explanation is that they were removed in solution with silica as it was leached from the iron formation.

Modern petroleum refining offers a complexity of environments, each requiring different metals for the satisfactory performance of-the various sections of the refinery, and this paper first outlines the varied enva.x¦on-ments thus met.It follows that the metal types in use will also vary to suit each particular environment, and the paper' consequently covers the use of ferrous-metals, ranging from plan carbon steels to the high alloy types and the non-ferrous metals, particularly copper and its alloys.The failures of some,of these metals and alloys are then illustrated by experiences it Kwinana. These failures are duo to (a) corrosion, (b) erosion, (c) faulty welding, and (d) mechanical defects,' of which the first is by far the most prevalent. The protective measures taken to prevent subsequent failures are then given under one or other of the following headings :(1) alterations in process conditions, (2) the use of alternative ,alloys,(3) suitable heat treatment, (4) redesign of the failed section, (5) cathodic protection, and (6) use of corrosion inhibitors.Reference is then made to the use of specialised metals and alloys.Metals, generally in the form of oxides or salts, are also used as catalysts in refining processes. Activated alumina is used, combined with silica .forScracking' of heavy oils, and as a support -for platinum, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and similar metals, which catalyse hydro-genation and dehydrogenation-processes. .In the final formulation of petroleum products metallic compounds may be added. Reference is made to the large quantities of lead used by the petroleum industry and to the use of metallic soaps and detergents in the formulation of lubricating oils and greases.

A conventional Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system with conveyor transport, mobile tripper and spreader was commissioned at the Goonyella Mine in 1982. The system was introduced to prestrip ahead of dragline excavations and was specified to remove 7.5 million cubic metres per annum in ground somewhat harder than that inwhich bucket wheel excavators are normally operated.This machine has, since 1982, moved more than 77 millionbank cubic metres of material and has been relocated twice. Extensive trials have been undertaken including digging blasted rock.

Societal influences, needs, and uses for recyclable materials are becoming increasingly important business and economic factors in the traditional natural resource companies. Several metals (such as steel, aluminium, zinc, lead and cadmium) are amenable ro recycle which eliminates solid waste generation and decreases the depletion of natural resources. In recent years, the non-ferrous industries have begun to recycle more materials and the next decade will see even larger recycle efforts. In addition to the traditonal recyclable materials, existing metallurgical plants are, or should be, able to handle and recycle materials viewed as 'hazardous'. Unfortunately, some national and regional regulations hinder, and in some cases prevent, the recycling of certain materials. Zinc Corporation of America (ZCA) is currently the largest producer of zinc metal in the USA and one of the world's largest producers of value-added zinc products. Over the last few years, ZCA has become one of the world's largest recyclers of zinc from various diverse materials. ZCA considers these recyclable materials as valuable 'land mines' that provide economic alternatives to the depletion of natural resources while serving society in the minimisation of solid waste disposal. Using the current production facilities of ZCA as a model, this paper overviews the recycling of zinc-bearing materials with special emphasis on: 1. the amenability for recycle within ZCA's pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical operations, 2. the quantities and economics of recycle, 3. the problems of recycling hindered by current national and regional regulations, 4. the concepts of total recycle rather than just recovering zinc while generating a modified solid waste, and 5. the motivators for recycling.

ERM Consultants Pty Ltd was established in 1980 for the purpose of introducing a disciplined coal technology and power station planning service, to support Australia's efforts in establishing a major export steaming coal industry. At that time, major coal exploration programs were mounted on more than 50 potential export coal deposits with proven open-cut reserves to export 200 Mt/a of coal. The fact that Australia achieved an export trade of only 30 Mt/a, equivalent to the energy requirements for a population of around 5 million people, illustrates the very small achievement to date. The main reasons for this small export steaming coal growth have been: 1. Failure to convince potential overseas coal buyers of the benefits of coal-fired power generation, and the ability of proper power station design to overcome environmental problems, and achieve reliable operation and long life when burning Australian coals. 2. Failure to promote Australian power engineers to advise on the use of Australian coals, resulting in Northern Hemisphere power station experience dominating in market countries. 3. Failure of governments to draw on privately practising Australian power engineers and coal technologists in technical workshops, presentations and assistance to overseas countries, to ensure that personnel whose business it was to serve the follow-on needs of countries were readily available. The result of these failures has been that: 1. Only a fraction of prospective overseas coal-fired power projects have proceeded. 2. Australia has had no influence in the design of overseas power stations to ensure that potential customers would be confident that Australian coals could be reliably burnt in their boilers.

The Meekatharra mining district lies in the northern pan of the Murchison Province of the Archaean Ynlgam block of Western Australia. Since dis- covery of the Paddy's Flat belt in the district in 1897 total gold production has been 67 tonnes and a further 33 tonnes in resources have been defined by drilling. The Paddy's Flat gold deposits occur within the Gabanintha Formation, a basal formation of the Murchison greenstone sequence containing komatiitic basalts, ultramafics and minor banded iron formations. The regional control on the distribution of deposits is an anastomosing shear belt which extends over 350 km and incorporates the Mt Magnet, Reedys and Meekatharra deposits. The following gold deposit styles may be recognized based on lithological association and alteration: Albite porphyry hosted, Carbonate-fuchsite- quartz alteration hosted deposits, Banded Iron Formation hosted sulphide replacement gold deposits and quartz vein deposits. With the exception of the banded iron formation hosted deposits, the Paddy's Flat alteration zone shows strong similarities to the alteration styles at Kerr-Addison (Ontario).

Responsible management of cyanide solutions and tailings on gold processing plants worldwide is an important aspect to these operations and is regulated via guidelines provided by the International Cyanide Management Code, an industry initiative designed to minimise cyanide risk to operators and the environment. Here we demonstrate the unprecedented causal relationships surrounding the saline (>14 000 mg/L total dissolved solids - TDS) and hypersaline (>50 000 mg/L TDS) cyanide solutions in gold plant tailings in the Central Goldfields of Western Australia, resulting in zero wildlife mortalities on three sites over the study period of almost one year. Wildlife interaction and ingestion is significantly lower than that experienced at other gold mine sites, with more rapid degradation of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide within the tailings storage facility (TSF). A rigorous chemical sampling using a novel æminimal accessÆ robotic sampler device and wildlife observation exercise was carried out at two hypersaline mine sites: Barrick Kanowna Belle (BKB) and Gold Fields St Ives (GSI) and one saline site, Barrick Granny Smith (BGS). The data was compared with available reported chemical sampling and wildlife observation data from a previously operational fresh water site (<2000 mg/L TDS) that had experienced wildlife mortalities, Case Study D (CSD). The comprehensive body of work, along with cyanide degradation test work carried out in the laboratory, was analysed via hypothesis development and testing, causation analysis and dynamic chemical modelling. The non-mortality effect on these sites appears to hold over a further four years of routine wildlife and cyanide monitoring by site personnel. This study has helped these three mine sites achieve and maintain full Compliance Cyanide Code status over a significant period while removing the need for operating the detoxification plants they would otherwise have required.CITATION:Adams, M D, Donato, D B, Schulz, R S, Smith, G B, Gibbons, T, Davies, S and Hillier, D, 2013. This paper presents initial findings of a project examining novel processes for the treatment of refractory sulphidic gold concentrates. Non-oxidative roasting of such concentrates for 12 hours at 750¦C resulted in the finely disseminated gold agglomerating to form discrete grains. The pyrite and arsenopyrite decomposed to form pyrrhotite, whilst the labile sulphur and arsenic driven off was collected on a condenser as a mixture of elemental sulphur, metallic arsenic and various arseneous sulphide compounds. As a result, the cyanide solubility of the gold contained in sulphidic refractory gold concentrate from the Emperor mine in Fiji improved from 54.5 per cent to 98.4 per cent; from the Fimiston mine in WA (65.2 per cent to 96.6 per cent), from the Windarra mine in WA (69.6 per cent to 91.3 per cent), from the Harbor Lights mine in WA (20.4 per cent to 60.7 per cent), and from the Wiluna mine in WA (12.6 per cent to 28.0 per cent). The non-oxidative roasting conditions have not been optimised for each of these minerals. Subjecting the non-oxidatively roasted minerals to mild oxidative acidic iron sulphate pressure leaching (with typical temperature of 100¦C and typical oxygen overpressure of 500 kPa) to remove iron and so further liberate finely disseminated gold, resulted in the cyanide solubility of the gold exceeding 96 per cent for each of these five concentrate types (including those from Harbor Lights and Wiluna). Thiourea leaching of the sulphur-rich residues under acidic conditions resulted in remarkably high gold extractions being achieved. These novel processing options need to be optimised, and their economic viability established.

Determining the mechanical properties of rocks is important for various civil engineering fields, including the mining of raw materials for aggregates used in the construction and paving industries. Traditionally, the mechanical properties of rocks are obtained through in situ and laboratory tests during geotechnical surveys. However, these time-consuming surveys involve many resources. In contrast, hyperspectral remote sensing methods make it possible to identify the mineralogical composition and crystallographic structure of the rock; properties that control the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this work, we characterise the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks by using a hyperspectral sensor in laboratory conditions. We collected about 150 cylindrical samples of carbonate rock, with a wide range of strength values from several rock outcrops in Israel. We used a point spectrometer in the range of 0.4–2.5 μm and a spectral image sensor in the range of 3.0–12.0 μm, scanning the samples to obtain the signature of their light reflections and spectral emissivity. We then measured the samples’ density, porosity, water absorption, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). We used sophisticated data mining to find statistical relationships between the hyperspectral signatures of the samples and their mechanical properties. We used this data to identify the most dominant wavelengths for predicting mechanical properties. We found that the density, porosity, and water absorption of carbonate rocks could be confidently predicted based on spectroscopy data, while the UCS of the rock could also be predicted, but less significantly. The results of the study pave the way for the development of measuring tools for the mechanical properties of rock, based on non-destructive tests of quarrying materials.

In the mid-1970s, trucking ore from 400 m depth to the surface was perceived to be the practical and economic limit for metalliferous underground mines. Improvements in truck design and decline development resulted in the economic depth of haul exceeding 600 m by the mid-1990s. Today, mine operators and contractors are planning to use trucks for ore haulage from depths in excess of 1000 m. The authors of this paper estimate that there are in excess of 300 diesel-powered trucks operating in mines in Australia, and that by the year 2005 more than five per cent of these trucks will be æroad trainsÆ (ie trucks towing powered trailers or truck-trailer combinations). This paper examines the road train concept, presents cost and performance data and describes the advantages and disadvantages of the road train system as well as proposing the types of applications for use of road trains in Australian metalliferous underground mines. Truck performance is based on payload and average speed (expressed as tonnes x kilometres per engine hour (t km/h)). A road train with a powered trailer has a large payload capacity and two engines to provide a high ratio of power to gross weight. Thus it is possible to exceed 300 t km/h per cycle for an average haulage gradient of 1:9 compared to 250 t km/h for conventional articulated dump trucks (ADTs). It is likely that road trains in excess of 100 t capacity will have application for level ore haulage at large mines in Australia.

The physical properties of monazite and the minerals with which it is associated in east coast beach sands are studied and discussed. Possible means for improving recovery are examined. In particular, it is suggested that the practice of splitting the heavy mineral concentrate into two parts as a preliminary to treatment in separate "rutile" and "zircon" mills can be modified in a simple fashion by the addition of an extra magnetic separation stage so as to aid monazite recovery.INTRODUCTIONBeach sand deposits on the east coast of Australia are a major source of rutile and zircon, and supply 80 per cent or more of world requirements. The deposits also contain a small amount of monazite, averaging about 0.5 per cent of the total heavy minerals. Yet despite a steady price in recent years of £150-160 per ton, monazite production has remained relatively small.On the basis of rutiIe production, potential monazite production on the east coast was about 1,500 tons in 1956, but only 102 tons of high-grade concentrate was produced. The main deterrent to increased production has probably been the capital cost of the necessary equipment. Separate electrostatic and magnetic equipment and separate table concentration and drying constitute a considerable outlay for a by-product contributing 4 to 5 per cent of the revenue from rutiIe.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss monazite concentration generally and to suggest modifications to flowsheets, which may facilitate monazite production while maintaining the main objective, simple and cheap means for maximum rutile production.

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.

The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high-variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘operational performance excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection/installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation and control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience and the essential backing/support of the operations management team together leading to higher-value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed.I say we can do much more and be ‘more efficient’ in our efforts to remain competitive. THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.
