Gold has been known and mined in Australia for over 150 years. It occurs and is mined in all States and the Northern Territory. In the past 30 years approximately 8300 t of gold has been mined and gold exports have contributed over $106 billion to the Australian economy. In the first three quarters of the Australian financial year 2006 - 07 (ending 30 June 2007) gold exports were valued at $7.3 billion, which was 13 per cent of the value of all minerals exported and five per cent of AustraliaÆs total goods and services exports over the period. Clearly gold has been and remains a very important component of the Australian economy.

To extract uranium from low-grade, calcrete-hosted uranium (CHU) ore is challenging owing to the presence of carbonate and swelling clay gangue minerals that require an alkaline lixiviant to be used. Western Australia possesses ~75 000 U3O8 t in CHU resources. Improvements to alkaline leach extraction practices would improve the economic potential of these deposits.A column leach study of CHU ore was run for 105 days using an alkaline carbonate-bicarbonate lixiviant. The uranium content of the liquor plateaued after 75 days at ~275 mg U/L; the calculated maximum solution capacity was 800 mg U/L. Spiked peaks and troughs were seen in the data set beyond the 60th day, where concentrations ranged from 220 - 290 mg U/L, indicating possible cyclic uptake and loss of uranium from the solution.Pristine and leached ore samples were geochemically analysed and mineralogically characterised at high resolution using a field emission gun-electron probe micro-analyser (FEG-EPMA). Results showed that leached ore samples from the top of the column contained less carnotite than pristine ore. In contrast, leached ore samples from the column base contained regions with more carnotite than pristine ore, indicating precipitation. Three carnotite grain micro-structures were identified in the leached ore; fan-spherulite, granular and core-shell cubes, with evidence for multiple growth phases.Evidence of carnotite precipitation was seen at the edge of and in pore spaces within montmorillonite and dolomite grains. The point of zero charge of both minerals is lower than the pH of the lixiviant (pH 10.8), thus the mineral surfaces are negatively charged and would not attract UO2(CO3)34- ions out of solution. Similarly, the decrease in the uranium content of the lixiviant is not attributed to super-saturation, as this was unlikely to have been achieved. Laboratory scale flotation tests were done on mineral hematite and aspecular hematite ore using oleic acid and sodium oleate as collectors. The mineral hematite floated strongly in the neutral pH region, with an increased pH range of flotation at higher oleate additions. Concentrates with sufficient hematite grade to meet the paint pigment specification were produced using oleic acid and sodium oleate as hematite collectors on the specular hematite ore. Hematite recoveries of 70 per cent at 60 per cent Fe grade were obtained using stagewise roughing. The interaction between hematite and oleate was confirmed as chemisorption but the exact mechanism could not be determined, as two independent phenomena can be used to explain the fact that the pH of maximum grade increased with increasing oleate addition.

The TerraSpec is a compact field portable mineral analyser that uses non-destructive reflectance spectroscopy for mineral identification. The instrument uses and measures infrared and visible light that is absorbed by certain covalent and molecular bonds (AlOH, FeOH, MgOH, CO32-, OH, H2O and NH4) within the lattice of a mineral at specific wavelengths producing an absorption spectral profile. A variety of minerals can be detected including clays, micas, carbonates, and hydroxides as well as some sulfates and silicates. However, not all minerals are detectable, such as quartz and feldspar. Alteration minerals replacing volcanic rocks have been studied for several epithermal prospects in the lower Waitekauri Valley (Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek) and a geothermal field in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. At the Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects previous XRD investigations determined well developed clay mineral zonation with illite in the west (Sovereign and Jubilee) grading into interstratified illite-smectite (Scotia) and smectite (Jasper Creek) to the east. Although the percent of illite within interstratified illite-smectite could not be determined and some illite-rich illite-smectite (>90 per cent illite) and some smectite-rich illite-smectite (>90 per cent smectite) could be misidentified as illite or smectite respectively, the TerraSpec survey determined the same zonation of illite to illite-smectite and smectite. Common chlorite, rare calcite and local kaolinite were also detected. At the geothermal field, the TerraSpec was primarily used to determine the occurrence of kaolinite, dickite and alunite, which form in acid conditions. Widely spaced (every 50 to 100 m) XRD results are in excellent agreement with closely spaced (every 5 to 10 m) TerraSpec results that further determined the occurrence of these minerals in previously unrecognised intervals. It also determined the occurrence of zoned smectite, illite-smectite, illite, and chlorite alteration. Overall, the TerraSpec is a rapid mineral identification technique that is very useful in delineating the occurrence and distribution of certain minerals in both epithermal deposits and geothermal fields. Although the TerraSpec cannot detect as many minerals as XRD, the TerraSpec allows data collection at a sampling scale and speed (real time) that is not practical by XRD.

Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is located 120 km south east of Perth, Western Australia. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd and mined by contractor Henry Walker Eltin (HWE). The mine has been operating since 1987 with ore extracted from a series of pits along strike. Ore is contained within the basement rock, which is overlain by a cap rock layer and transition zone. Cap rock and basement zones require blasting.As the mine neared completion, a high-grade deposit was discovered within 50 m of an existing Western Power substation and 100 m from the processing mill. The substation provides power to the Boddington area and is a back-up power supply to the city of Perth. Due to the delicate nature of the transformers located at the power station, overhead power lines and the mill, blasting in the area was considered very high risk. As such blasting needed to be controlled for flyrock, airblast and most importantly peak vibration and frequency limits which had the potential to damage the transformers.The mine was due for closure in March 2001. The decision to mine the pit was based on its high grade, ability to be blended with lowering grades from other pits and changing of the processing technique with the expansion. This decision extended the life for a further six months.Due to the high potential risks a detailed risk assessment was conducted by Orica, Worsley and Henry Walker Eltin. The completed assessment and the major design parameters were presented to Western Power for approval. The ability to reduce the blasting risk was focused on limiting of vibration through controlling maximum charge initiated per delay, blast timing and firing direction, and other innovative control measures. OricaÆs SHOTPlan« and Sabrex« computer modelling packages were used to predict the outcome of blasts.The success of this project has opened the doors for other high risk blasting projects, which otherwise may be left unmined.

The main purpose of these systems is to provide managers with reliable and timely information on the current state and typical tendencies of operation of the facilities under control. However until the present time no scientific and methodical ground for system monitoring of the mining companies and branches has been created. Therefore, the authors of the report have aimed to assess the current situation with regard to the researches in this field and to do analysis of the most important aspects and ways of solution of the issue under consideration.

Management of information systems for data collection is essential to maintain data integrity and continuity, and manage loss control on a large world-class mine such as Telfer Gold Mine. This paper aims to describe the individual systems and protocols of geological data capture at Telfer, then focus on Quality Assurance Quality Control data as an example of loss control in practice. Loss control systems are required to provide capacity, flexibility, structure and management tools to enhance data interrogation. The data that have been collected can then provide geological, financial, environmental, and contractual information to optimise management of business best practice. Telfer Gold Mine is a wholly owned and operated subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited. The mine is located in a remote area of NW Western Australia, and has been operating for 20 years. Geological data have been collected at Telfer since 1973. The data include drilling, assay, geological, survey, structural and geophysical data. Data management has evolved through many systems with data stored on many different hardware and software platforms. Commencing in 1995, collation, standardisation and validation of the historic data was completed. This has resulted in the first Access based drill hole database incorporating all available drilling data. This drill hole database, now hosted in SQL Server, is the hub for all geology related data management systems. The Telfer Gold Mine Geology Department has developed a series of inter-related database systems in order to manage the core geology business issues. Databases relating to drill hole planning, drill contract management, geological logging, accounting (standard costing, forecasting, invoice reconciliation), quality control (QAQC), and environment rehabilitation have all been developed to manage loss control. Management effort to provide adequate data systems and protocols has driven the system from concept to utilisation. The improved productivity, data integrity and data analysis capabilities provided by the new database systems at Telfer have allowed for greater confidence in decision making. Systems such as the drill hole and QAQC databases, when utilised in the proper manner provide up-to-date data analysis for resource audits and contract negotiations. The loss control systems are essential to maintain confidence in data integrity and hence directly effect the future of mining at Telfer.

The extremely lengthy and complicated governmental approval process together with the delaying tactics of opponents of the project are outlined and comment is made on aspects of the draft legislation proposed as part of the overhaul of New Zealand's resource management laws.

Lime and cement manufacturing has a proud history in Otago, with the earliest lime kilns appearing around 1849 at Caversham and Kaikorai in Dunedin . At Dunback or Makareao (to be precise) three well-type kilns were built by the government in 1899. In 1909 these kilns were leased to the then Milburn Lime and Cement Company. They erected a large brick Schmatolla kiln in 1909, elliptical in plan and fired by coal gas. The kiln operated up until 1944 before being left derelict. The quarry which supplied the kiln also supplied the Burnside Cement works from 1929 up until its closure in 1988. The quarry was shifted to the top of the hill in the 1950s.

Most of the world's economically significant volcanogenic massive sulphide (VSM) deposits are considered to have formed in submarine arc and backarc settings. While the Kermadec-Tonga arc is an excellent example of an intra-oceanic arc setting, it remains largely unexplored in terms of submarine mineral resources. More than half of this arc (~1400 km of the >2500-km-long feature) lies within the EEZ of New Zealand, where it is defined by at least one sub-aerial and 33 submarine volcanoes. The NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) cruise of March 1999 provided a systematic assessment ofhydrothermal activity on the southernmost 13 submarine volcanoes along the southern Kermadec arc. Using prospecting techniques based on the physical and chemical detection of hydrothermal plumes, we discovered that more than half (7 of 13) of the southern Kermadec volcanoes host one or more active hydrothermal systems at depths ranging between <200 to 1800 m. Chemical results show that the fluids discharged are compositionally diverse among volcanoes and between sites at a single volcano. Plumes over more than half of the volcanoes are gas-rich (He, CO2, H2S) relative to mid-ocean-ridge (MOR) plumes. In addition, most sites are highly enriched in Fe, yielding Fe/Mn values that far exceed those for MORs. One interpretation consistent with these observations is compositional overprinting by addition of magmatic fluids, which are typically highly enriched in gaseous and ionic components. Regardless of the source, it is clear that the ligands (HS-, Cl-) required to efficiently transport base (e.g. Cu, Zn, Pb) and precious (e.g. Au, Ag) metals to the seafloor are abundant in Kermadec arc fluids. We conclude that modem analogs of VMS deposits are likely forming at multiple sites along the Kermadec arc and within the EEZ of New Zealand.

The East China Mesozoic metallogenic province hosts the world’s largest resources of tungsten, tin, molybdenum, antimony and bismuth, with additional important gold, silver, mercury, lead, zinc, copper, uranium and iron deposits. These deposits form several giant metallogenic belts, including South China, Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley, East Qinling-Dabie, eastern North China Craton and North-east China. Available data demonstrate that these metallogeneic belts are the products of episodic magmatic and related hydrothermal events between ~240 and ~80 Ma. Each magmatic-hydrothermal episode has produced distinct deposit assemblages that can be readily linked to the Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of East China, involving continental collision between the North China Craton and South China Block at 220–200 Ma, oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate under the Eurasian continent at ca 170–135 Ma and post-subduction extension and lithospheric delamination at 130–80 Ma. Metallogeny in north-eastern China is more complicated due to prolonged tectonic evolution related to southward subduction of the Mongolian–Okhotsk plate and westward oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate, and subsequent continental collision and post-collisional processes.CITATION:Mao, J W, Xie, G Q and Cheng, Y B, 2015. The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. Ausmelt top submerged lance technology is at the cutting edge of technological developments in non-ferrous metal smelting with commercial operations throughout the world. The Technology is being used for lead smelting, copper smelting and matte converting, fuming zinc from slags, recycling iron residue from zinc plants, processing the aluminium industry hazardous waste SPL , precious metal processing, nickel-copper residue smelting and converting, and tin smelting. The Technology is also being developed for projects involving iron-making and waste industry opportunities. There are 19 furnaces operable or under design at the time of writing. The benefits to operators using Ausmelt Technology vary depending on application, but typically result from environmental improvements, enhanced recovery of valuable products, lower capital and operating costs, more flexible operations capable of handling a wide range of feed materials, better removal of impurities, or improved product quality. Growing industry acceptance of the Technology is evidenced by the fact that more than 20 per cent of the worldÆs tin production will be extracted in systems using Ausmelt Technology when the Yunnan Tin Corporation plant starts up in 2001. Metallurgists, industrialists and investors have accepted the Technology for improved operations in both greenfield main smelters and add-on plants in Korea, China, Japan, Germany, Peru, Zimbabwe, India, Namibia and Australia. Ausmelt intends that this paper will update the industry by outlining recent achievements of the Technology in global metallurgical operations.

Newmont Waihi Operations is participating in the initiation of a community liaison forum in association with the local district council. The objective is to provide a forum for the free and regular exchange of ideas, concerns and information, and through improved communication seek to achieve a more comprehensive set of solutions to community, operating and closure issues associated with Martha Mine. A similar liaison forum has been operated on two previous occasions during earlier phases of the present mine's operation. This paper deals with the practical aspects of setting up a liaison forum to act as an effective conduit between regulators, mine operators, local businesses and the community. The mechanisms and procedures for identifying community issues and concerns are dealt with. The actions and structures required to ensure effective ongoing community 'buy in' at all levels are discussed. Corporate philosophies are addressed. Specific examples from Martha Mine, Waihi New Zealand will be used to illustrate the paper. This will include a brief explanation of previous and current community issues, Newmont Waihi's operations both at Martha Mine and the proposed Favona underground mine, and the practical issues involved in setting up a liaison forum.

The traditional measure of Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) as a measure of improvement in safety performance is recognised as inadequate and misleading, lulling managers into believing that safety is improving. It is a reactive measure, and steadily declining LTIFRs around the world have failed to be accompanied by a similar reduction in the fatality rate. This paper confronts the industry with the attitudes of some mining managers, such as one that allowed fatalities to occur in the case of a gold mining company at a rate of one death per 150 000 ounces of gold produced while claiming their safety record has improved, as shown by a falling LTIFR, and viewing fatality reductions as a long-term goal instead of an immediate priority. A quantum shift in management attitudes is required to focus on proactive measurements to detect the indicators of an impending disaster, and to predict conditions conducive to fatalities. Corporate CEOs are challenged to attend the funerals of all workers killed in the workplace. CEOs who fail to attend such funerals send a message to employees that the CEOÆs priorities lie elsewhere, and that profits take priority over workersÆ lives. The dichotomy of whether mining companies are run for the benefit of shareholders or whether companies owe social responsibility to the community is examined. The role of individual responsibility for personal safety is examined, together with the psychology of employees in the mining industry. A number of proactive measurable indicators are suggested to stimulate discussion on developing robust measuring tools to predict and therefore prevent fatalities.

Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone.
