This report is a continuation of an earlier one with a similar titlell to which the reader is referred for such details of procedure as do not appear here. A brief summary will be given of the objects and methods of the research at this time. It was pointed out in the previous paper that properties of magnesium alloys, as reported by different workers, often differ. This was thought to be due to differences in the preparation of the specimens tested. The ideal way to compare alloys would be to prepare each of them in so many ways that reasonable assurance would exist that the best properties of each alloy had been developed. The alloys would then be compared on the basis of these properties. The treatment actually given the alloys of these studies is necessarily a compromise with completeness. Nevertheless, enough treatments have been given so that a considerable degree of assurance exists that the properties obtained are representative of the alloy as such, and not merely of the manner in which it was worked and heat-treated. Procedure The alloys were cast in the form of cylindrical ingots, which were extruded into bar before being rolled. Some of the ingots were made in 2-in. diameter molds whereas all of the alloys of the previous paper were cast in 4.in. molds. For the larger ingots, the extruded bar was 2 by 0.140 in.; lor the 2-in. ingots, it was I by 0.100 in. Preliminary work indicated that strip rolled from both sizes of the bars would have substantially the same properties. The bar was rolled at some temperature in the range 400' to 800°F., for a total reduction of 50 per cent. The temperature and reduction per pass were so selected that no cold cracking occurred, but were such as to leave the metal in a semihard condition. The hot-rolled metal was annealed at several temperatures in the range 400' to 800°F.; it was also cold-rolled, and given solution and aging treatments. Two standard test bars corresponding to each treatment were pulled in tension, and the average was obtained. Twelve treatments, in all, were given each alloy. The properties of the annealed specimen having the highest percentage of elongation were selected to represent the alloy in the annealed condition. The properties of the cold-rolled specimen having the highest yield strength were selected to represent the alloy in the cold-rolled condition. These properties were then plotted against percentage composition by analysis. Smooth curves were drawn among the points, thus graphically averaging the results over the entire range studied. The percentage of elongation in the cold-rolled state was not plotted, since it was always low, and varied in an irregular manner with composition. The mountains of Utah contain one of the largest deposits of high grade bituminous coal in the world. According to the United States Geological Survey, there are 13,130 square miles of land known to contain workable coal, and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. More remarkable than the extent of the coal fields is the thickness of the coal beds. Over three-fourths of the output of coal in Utah is recovered from beds ranging from 8 to 17 feet in thickness, as com- pared to one-eighth of the output of the entire country from such beds. In 1917, Utah mined one-third of its coal from seams at least 16 feet thick, compared to one-half of one per cent of the total bituminous output of the country from like seams. Coal at Wales, in Sanpete county, and in the vicinity of Coalville, Utah, was, it is reported, the first discovered by white men in the state. Wales claims the distinction of having produced the first coal mined in Utah. Two men, who had been coal miners in Wales, learned of the coal from an old Indian chief who called it "rock that would burn." In 1857, the town of Wales was founded and coal mined, and in 1858 some coke was manufactured and hauled by ox team to Salt Lake City. South of Wales is Castle Valley, in Wasatch Plateau field. From 50 to 60 miles of the old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe. New Mexico, to Monterey, California, lies in Castle Valley. The coal in this field may or may not have been known at the time the trail was used extensively. The first published reference to this coal, however, was made by a party of the Corps of Topographic Engineers in their journal for October 11, 1853.

THE supercooling behavior of pure liquid metal droplets has been described.' The solidification behavior of small droplets of Cu-Ni alloys as a function of composition is described herein. The Cu-Ni system is of interest for such an investigation because the components are miscible in all proportions in both the liquid and solid state and the phase diagram of the system, Fig. 1, is a type often encountered in metal systems. It was noted by Van Riemsdyk2 and others that the nature of the "blick" of gold droplets during assaying is not perceptibly affected by the content of the platinum group metals that are soluble in both liquid and solid gold. With the exception of these very qualitative observations there appear to have been no prior investigations of the supercooling of alloy droplets. A series of nine alloys varying in composition by 10 pct (nominal weight) steps was made using certified OFHC copper, 99.996 pct purity, obtained from the American Brass Co., and electrolytic nickel pellets, 99.92 pct purity, obtained from the International Nickel Co. The alloys were melted and cast in vacuo in a high frequency induction furnace. Segregation was minimized by chill casting into 1-in. diam steel molds. Each alloy rod was homogenized at a temperature 50°C lower than the solidus for 100 hr in dry hydrogen. Samples for solidification experiments and chemical analysis were machined from the same portion of each rod and at a depth of in. from the rod surface. A Car-boloy tool was used in taking turnings to minimize contamination of sample by the cutting tool. As a check, a number of samples for microscopic observation were chipped from the ingot with a fragment of pyrex glass. The resultant data in all cases agreed, within experimental error, with the data obtained from machined turnings. A number of small particles, 30 to 50 micron diam, of a Cu-Ni alloy were placed in a quartz vial 1/32 in. diam x % in. long. This was inserted into a platinum ribbon heater and mounted in a high temperature microscope stage. The general procedure followed in inserting samples into the stage and measuring the temperature of melting and solidification was the same as described in an earlier paper.' A chromel-alumel thermocouple was used to study alloys of 88.93 pct Cu, 80.62 pct Cu, and 72.27 pct Cu. A platinum-10 pct rhodium thermocouple was used for the remainder of the alloys. Procedure The assembled high temperature microscope stage was first evacuated and the sample given a 2 min in situ treatment at 900 °C in dry hydrogen to remove surface oxides which might otherwise catalyze crystal nucleation. After this treatment the atmosphere was changed to purified helium and melting and solidification were observed microscopically. It was not possible to determine the solidus with certainty. However, the liquidus temperature was measured very accurately since the surface of the particle changed in appearance from coarse and uneven to smooth, mirror-like within a few degrees. The visually determined liquidus temperature was checked by finding the highest temperature to which the particle could be heated such that it did not supercool upon lowering the temperature. This temperature which checked within experimental error with that found by observing surface change was assumed to be characteristic of the thermody-namic liquidus. In order to minimize the effect of selective evaporation of copper from the alloy, samples were changed frequently and the droplets were heated no more than 50 °C in excess of the liquidus temperature T,. When the latter conditions were fulfilled, T, values were reproducible. After melting, the temperature was decreased slowly until the particles solidified. 10.2-1. Equipment Scheduling. In any earth-moving operation, more profit may be earned or lost by equipment scheduling than by any other single facet of the project. Many now-defunct earth movers would have survived the cost-profit squeeze had they followed an efficient, cost saving, equipment scheduling program. The ideal program would have every item of the equipment fleet working all of the time. In practice for many obvious reasons, principally mechanical conditions, operating conditions, and human nature-this ideal situation is not possible. The cost-conscious organization strives to keep as many pieces of equipment of the fleet working efficiently as much of the work day as possible. Operating efficiency requires the minimum equipment to move the predetermined tonnages in the prescribed period of time. In the case of a shovel-truck operation this would mean the scheduling of the minimum shovel and truck shifts to excavate and transport the necessary tonnage to the processing plant or waste dump. To accomplish this goal, the operator must work from the predetermined production established by the requirements of the plant, stripping ratio, mine plan, etc. This production schedule may be in terms of tons or yards per year, per month, or per hour, but must eventually be translated into tons or yards per ma- chine per unit of time. In this regard, the reader is referred to Sections 8.0, Excavation and Loading, and 9.0, Haulage and Transportation. The trend to larger and faster, and as a result more costly, equipment requires that the operator consider every possibility to keep the equipment operating around the clock, seven days per week. In some areas seven day operation may not be feasible economically, because of premium pay for Sunday work. Mine labor agreements are generally written without premium pay penalties for weekend work, and such scheduling is possible and most often desirable.

IN view of the increasing importance of sintering in the beneficiation of iron ores preparatory to their reduction in the blast furnace, the writer believes the time is opportune for an up-to-date, though brief, discussion of the general principles of sintering, as well as a discussion of some of the recent improvements and mechanical developments that have been achieved in this industry, its present trend and future possibilities. Sintering may be defined as the agglomeration of fine mineral particles into a porous mass by incipient fusion caused by heat produced by com-bustion within the mass itself. Its first successful application, in connec-tion with the treatment of lead sulphide ores, was known as blast roasting. In this process the lead ore was given a preliminary roasting in a reverber-atory furnace, then the incandescent mass was placed in a pot with a grate and an updraft was applied. It was soon discovered that much better results were obtained by cooling the ore, moistening it, and placing it upon an incandescent layer of fuel previously placed upon a grate, and then applying the updraft blast of air until the charge was converted into a more or less agglomerated mass. The fuel was sulphur and the process one of desulphurization, which was the principal result desired. The application of downdraft to blast roasting brought about tremen-dous results; the principal one of which was that an air blast of high pressure could be passed through a layer of ore deposited on a grate, or on a grate covered by a layer of coarse porous material, without disturbing the particles of which the layer is composed. The air current is compelled to filter through the pores of the charge, whereas if the same pressure applied to the top surface of the charge with downdraft were applied to the bottom of the charge with updraft, the charge would be completely blown off the grate. Another result of reversing the draft was that a flame could readily be applied to the top surface of the charge for ignit-ing purposes.

ECONOMIC waste caused by mine fires may become considerable,15 especially if a fire is allowed to spread or temporarily to get beyond control. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to make every action count. To contribute toward its extinction effectively it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment, and continuously thereafter, what is happening at the seat of the fire, which may be in a remote or inaccessible area, and also to recognize what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. In combatting a fire the mining engineer and the chemist should cooperate, first deciding upon the course of action to be taken and then drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required to carry out proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which these operations could be performed, and upon the chemist's knowledge for the results to be expected therefrom. After the initial steps to be taken have been decided, it devolves upon the mining engineer to see that they are carried out and upon the chemist to evaluate the results and to keep the mining engineer continuously informed in regard to a variety of matters-such as the composition and toxic or asphyxiating properties of the atmosphere in which the men may be working, whether the fire is increasing or decreasing in intensity and its probable temperature, the quantity of air leakage and the explosion hazards of the fire area. The purpose of this paper is to discuss what the chemist can and cannot contribute as a member of the fire-fighting personnel. The technical literature contains several hundred papers relating directly and indirectly to mine fires, and this fact alone is testimony to the complex nature of the phenomena involved in the birth, life, and final demise of a fire. A fire may be stopped (I) by preventing oxygen from reaching the coal or (2) by removing the conditions necessary for the rapid reaction of coal with oxygen; i.e., decreasing the temperature. All methods of prevention or control. necessarily must be based upon one or the other, or both, of these two principles. . The chemistry of a fire may be understood readily if the low-temperature oxidation of coal is considered as a starting point; then oxidation at higher temperatures (or combustion) ; and with these, the composition of the solid and gaseous products resulting from the oxidation or from the effects of the heat liberated. This discussion refers particularly to Pennsylvania anthracite, although much of the material applies equally well to coals of lower rank. OXIDATION OF COAL Oxidation of coal fundamentally is confined to the surface; that is, the rate at which oxygen penetrates into the interior of a solid block of coal is so slow that it may be ignored.6,16 Oxidation starts when a fresh surface is exposed, and the rate is

The temperature and oxygen concentration dependence on the reaction of sphalerite in oxygen at pressures from 6 to 640 mm Hg have been investigated in the temperature range 700° to 870°C. Sphalerite has been found to oxidize linearly over this entire temperature and pressure range. At higher rates, considerable self-heating was observed. The dependence of the oxidation rate on the oxygen concentration may be expressed by: Rate = k' where k' is the specific rate constant and 0 = K1[O2]/(1 + KI[O2]), where K1 is the equilibrium rate constant for the adsorption of oxygen on sphalerite. Values of the activation energy and the enthalpy of adsorption were found to be 60.3 and —59.6 kcal per mol, respectively. Data have been presented that indicate conditions under which either a sulphatizing or an oxidizing roast may be obtained. ROASTING processes have been employed in the metallurgy of a great number of basic metals in use today. Until recently, however, little attempt has been made to deduce the fundamental mechanism by which oxidation takes place. Structural changes upon oxidation have been investigated1 = and thorough work has been performed with regard to the reaction products and the thermodynamics of the oxidation reactions. The objective of this investigation was to determine the rate of oxidation of sphalerite and to apply the absolute reaction rate theory in the theoretilcal interpretation of the experimental results." "O Description of Apparatus The apparatus contains the following features: 1—a furnace with gas system, 2—an autographic weighing system, and 3—a temperature control system. Furnace With Gas System—The furnace was mounted by a yoke on each end and was free to travel up and down on steel guide rods, permitting the introduction and removal of samples from the apparatus with minimum difficulty. The furnace was heated by three sections of Kanthal wire wound externally on a zirconia tube and insulated with Fiber-frax. Pure gases or mixtures of gases were introduced into the lower end of the furnace through two flowmeters, a mixing chamber, and a gas-tight sparger, Fig. 1. The gaseous products of the reaction and the unused gases were prevented from escaping to the atmosphere by maintaining a small negative pressure on the system. This procedure permitted air from the outside to enter through the small an-nulus around the quartz suspension fiber and prevented the escape of the internal gases. Autographic Weighing System—The autographic weighing system consisted of an adapted gold balance, a photoelectric circuit, and a weight recorder, Fig. 2. The sample was suspended from one end of the balance beam by means of a platinum chain outside the furnace and a long thin quartz fiber on the inside of the furnace. On the other end of the balance beam, the necessary weights were added to counterbalance the sample. In addition, a calibrated chain was added to the balance which was linked directly to the weight recording unit. Control was effected by means of a photoelectric circuit." A parallel beam of light from a strong source was directed onto a small front-surfaced aluminum mirror mounted in the middle of the balance beam and then to a front-surfaced mirror mounted on the ceiling of the room. The beam was then reflected onto a front-surfaced right prism at a distance of 9 ft from the balance

IN this paper are presented the results of a complete statistical survey of the enrolment, courses and degrees, and the employment situation of recent graduates in all of the 46 institutions in the United States, including Alaska, and four of the six schools in Canada that grant degrees in mineral technology. The data were collected by the writer by means of a questionnaire in December, 1933, to which all the institutions, except one, replied. Included also are data of a similar study made by the writer in May, 1933, for the S. P. E. E. summer session of mining and metallurgical teachers at the University of Wisconsin and published in the Journal of Engineering Education for December. 1933. Some of the data of a paper of the writer's entitled, "The Trend of Mineral Engineering Student Enrolment in the United States," read at the A. I. M. E. meeting on Feb. 16. 1931, are given for comparison. Acknowledgment is made to all the administrative officers of the institutions who took the time from their busy lives to supply the in- formation asked for. THE YEAR 1931 was for most American copper producers one of restricted output but extremely low production cost.. When compared with 1929, the marked reductions in costs achieved in 1931, operating at rates in many instances a third to a half of capacity, can only be regarded as remarkable. In fact, the recent shut-down of several large operations suggests the probability that 1931 costs represent a bare minimum for many properties. Before discussing the 1931 results a few remarks on cost data are appropriate. The type of cost tabulation here presented was first published in 1929, (A. B. Parsons. E. & M. I. June 8, 1929), and has appeared each, succeeding year following in general the calculation method and company set-up of the original article. (. G. W. Tower, E. & III. L, July 8. 1930; S. D. Strauss, E. & M. J.; July 27, 1931). As far as possible the leading American copper companies are included. In considering these cost tabulations it must be borne in mind that the information from which they have been prepared is entirely contained in the annual report of each company; and that a multiplicity of interests and a condensed income statement for some of the larger companies, such as Cerro de Pasco and Kennecott, make the cost figure an arbitrary one depending upon sundry metal credits, metal products, miscellaneous income, etc. For Granby, Howe Sound. Magma, and Noranda, sundry metal credits are important. Furthermore Andes, Chile and Greene Cananea give costs only against copper sold. Although the individual costs here figured are by no means absolute they are computed by the same method each year and offer a basis of annual comparison; and with attention to footnotes the premises on which the costs are based may be easily followed.

THE COMMITTEE on Correlation of Research held two meetings in 1931. The first was a luncheon meeting on Feb. 19, at the Engineers Club, New York, attended by eight members and four guests-William H. Bassett, past-president of the Institute; Robert E. Tally, president; H. Foster Bain, secretary; and Alfred D. Flinn, director of the Engineering Foundation. Mr. Bassett gave a short resume of the circumstances leading to the formation of the Committee and expressed his opinion that the objectives as expressed by the Committee in its first annual report were in accordance with the ideas of the Institute officials. Mr. Tally stressed the great importance of research in the mining and metallurgical industries and stated that lie believed the Institute should encourage and promote research, and that this Committee could do a great deal to foster such work in the Institute. Mr. Bain pointed out that this Committee was appointed with a view to correlating and fostering research work. in the field of the Institute's activities. This could be done in various ways, as by encouraging the divisions and committees of the Institute to hold group meetings on research, by forming research subcommittees in the Institute divisions, and by bringing together research interest in. certain projects and the fund or organization that is equipped to carry out the project.

"The nebular theory is a noble speculation supported by plausible argument, and the verdict of science on the whole subject cannot be better expressed than in the words of Newcomb :—'At the present time we can only say that the nebular hypothesis is indicated by the general tendencies of the laws of nature, that it has not been proved to be inconsistent with any fact, that it is almost a necessary consequence of the only theory by which we can account for the origin and conservation of the sun's heat, but that it rests on the assumption that this conservation is to be explained by the laws of nature as we now see them in operation. Should any one be skeptical as to the sufficiency of these laws to account for the present state of things, science can furnish no evidence strong enough to overthrow his doubts until the sun shall be found growing smaller by actual measurement, or the nebulæ be actually seen to condense into stars and systems.' " Leibnitz2 is credited by Cuvier3 (who associates with him Descartcs) with " amusing their imaginations " by conceiving the world to be an extinguished sun or vitrified globe upon which the vapors, condensing in proportion as it cooled, formed the seas, and afterwards deposited the calcareous strata. Whiston4 believed the earth was crested from the atmosphere of one comet and deluged by the tail of another. The heat which remained from its origin excited the whole antediluvian population, men and animals, to sin, for which they mere all drowned in the deluge, except the fish, whose passions were apparently less violent. De Maillet5 held that the globe had been covered by water for many thousand years. The terrestrial animals were originally inhabitants of the sea, and man himself began his career as a fish. Effects of short-circuiting paths on observed diffusion behavior in real crystalline systems are considered. It is concluded that experimentally measured diffusion coefficients may vary widely from values associated with true lattice diffusion to those appropriate for short-circuiting paths alone depending upon the conditions of the experiment and the sensitivity and completeness of the data. IN 1961 Harrison1 classified experimentally observed diffusion behavior in systems involving both lattice and dislocation-enhanced atomic transport into three categories. His types A and C were limiting cases where the measured diffusion coefficients using the usual serial sectioning techniques were representative of lattice diffusion (with only slight effects of dislocations) and dislocation-network diffusion (with only slight effects from lattice diffusion), respectively. In both cases A and C for a sectioning experiment in which the diffusion couple has the semi-infinite geometry and unidirectional diffusion takes place from a plane source located at the origin of the coordinate system, he pointed out that Gaussian penetration behavior should be observed. For case A the lattice coefficient should be slightly enhanced by dislocation contributions, and the model of Hart2 can be used to predict the amount of this enhancement. For case C the observed coefficient should be that for the dislocation network and have little or nothing to do with lattice diffusion. Hart's model in its general form is still applicable, but the apparent diffusion coefficient for this case is virtually independent of dislocation density. Harrison's case B is that for which non-negligible contributions exist for transport by both mechanisms and "the concentration distribution does not approximate to any simple form." With the possible exception of very low temperatures where diffusion distances approach atomic dimensions, any real diffusion specimen will in general show non-Gaussian behavior provided the data are complete enough to uncover it. Thus, a "complete" set of data for any real system cannot be expected to be totally amenable to treatment by a simple mathematical model which does not take into account the relative distribution of transport by the various modes or submodes. For a particular sensitivity of specimen analysis and at a given temperature of annealing if the concentration profile could be observed as a function of time, "the behavior will initially be type C, and will develop into type B. and ultimately type A".1 Thus, it appears that the type of diffusion behavior which is experimentally observed in a given system depends very much upon the particular experimental conditions and the particular tools available to obtain the data. Interpreted in this fashion, Harrison's classification refers not to the diffusion behavior as a whole but to the relative sensitivity of the method of examination and completeness of the data. In the present paper we will: 1) assume that the measured penetration behavior follows the same general classification as that proposed by Harrison; 2) give, for diffusion in tungsten, examples of the range of diffusion coefficients that it is possible to obtain in a single experiment; and 3) speculate that some arguments which consider the possibility of short-circuiting effects being responsible for "anomalous" diffusion in several bcc metals may have been discarded prematurely.3 Both monocrystalline and polycrystalline tungsten were used in this work. The former was obtained as triple-pass, electron-beam zone-refined 6.0-mm-diam rod from Materials Research Corp.. Orange-burg. N.Y. The latter was swaged, high-purity bar stock which was annealed for 2 hr at 2200°C and 10-9 torr to yield an average grain diameter of about 25 /i. The tracer Nb95 was received in oxalate solution from the Isotopes Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Experimental procedures of specimen preparation, isothermal diffusion annealing, serial sectioning by anodizing-and-stripping, and y counting of the individual sections to determine the tracer penetration profile after a given diffusion anneal have been described elsewhere.4 However, it should be noted that the anodizing-stripping sectioning technique has the particular advantage for this research of permitting sectioning to be accomplished over a wide range of

G. w. Thompson,* Brooklyn, N. Y.—This subject has two aspects, neither of which can be ignored: these are the economic aspect and the technical aspect. Under ordinary conditions, economic law will take care of the conservation of tin. Under present conditions it seems desirable that economic law should still be permitted to operate as far as is practicable. It is true that this law operates rather slowly, and that under war conditions it cannot be depended upon to give our Government the supply it immediately needs. There should, therefore, be a designation of the essential industries by the Government, and tin should be supplied for those needs, letting the non-essential industries take what is left. At the same time, information ought to be forthcoming as to how tin can be conserved; with tin selling at 80 c. per pound, more or less, it is to the interest of every consumer to get the best information he can as to how he can save tin. Economic law would properly punish those who do not study their own interests in this way. I deprecate, therefore, any centralized socialistic effort toward avoiding penalties through failure to observe and obey economic law. In saying this, however, I am not unmindful that it is desirable for our Government to take such control of the tin situation as may be necessary to the prosecution of the war, practically regardless of the effect of such action upon individual industry, which should studiously seek to adjust itself to the new condition. The Government should promulgate such technical information as it can collect, showing how .tin can be conserved, and should urge upon every consumer the exercise of his common sense in self-protection. There is very little danger of any one attempting to hoard or corner tin, in the present state of the market. Most consumers will be glad to live from hand to mouth, covering their sales by purchases, or vice versa. As to the technical aspects: Tin and tin alloys are used to give certain practical and also certain artistic results. The practical factors are those involved in proper adhesion, continuity of surface, protection, the right degree of hardness, proper working qualities, etc. The artistic results are those that appeal purely to the eye or to our cultivated sense of what is desirable. There is no doubt that a great deal of tin could be saved if there were not a demand for certain pleasing effects. Row can this saving be brought about? The users of tin bearing alloys are not the only ones involved in this question. The manufacturers of solder and babbitt have for a long time sought to give certain appearances to their fabricated bars and ingots in order to make them more salable. The user of a solder is very apt to judge of its working qualities by the appearance of the bar; the same thing is true with regard to babbitts. THE total annual energy production from coal, petroleum, natural gas and water power has been increasing at a fairly constant rate during the thirty years ending in 1930. But since 1913 the demand for the competitors of coal has increased at a rate faster than that for coal. During the last twenty years, the curve of coal production has had a generally horizontal trend; in fact, the 1930 production of coal was six per cent less than that of 1913. Economists attribute this loss of demand to greater efficiency in coal utilization and to displacement of coal by oil and natural gas. These two factors are about equally responsible, and it is evident that research has been intimately concerned with both. About sixty per cent of the bituminous coal mined in the United States in 1929 was used for generating steam, either in stationary or locomotive boilers. A decade ago seventy per cent or more was used for this purpose. This change is due largely to tremendous advances in fuel economy.

Oil has been produced in Persia and India for many years, but it was not until 1932 that Arabia entered the arena as a potential oil-producing area. In 1930 the Standard Oil Co. of California acquired a concession covering the rights of exploration and exploitation for oil in the Bahrein Islands and in June, 1932, the first commercial production was discovered by the bringing in of a well known as Jebel Dukhan No. 1 on the Island of Bahrein. Since then the Standard Oil Co. of California through its wholly owned subsidiary, The Bahrein Petroleum Co. Ltd., has been carrying on a systematic survey and development program of its concession in the Bahrein Islands. This group of islands, of which Bahrein is the largest, is in the southwestern portion of the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 miles from the mainland of Arabia. Although geographically a part of Arabia, the islands are not a part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Their government is essentially independent but certain special rights have been granted to Great Britain through a series of treaties. The Island of Bahrein is 32 miles long by 9 1/2 miles wide and covers an area of 215 square miles. Approximately three-fourths of the island is occupied by a relatively low, broad, elliptically shaped dissected hill, the central part of which is slightly depressed with inward-facing cliffs but culminating in the Jebel Dukhan (Hill of Smoke), which rises to an elevation of 443 ft. above sea level. The topography of the island is a good index of its geologic structure. Structurally the island is an elongated dome or quaquaversal fold composed of rocks of Eocene age. The major axis of the fold strikes N.5W. All of the topographic high portion of the island is a part of the structural uplift. The crest of the fold is broad and flat with the dips increasing on the flanks. How far tilted strata may continue beyond the line where the Eocene beds are covered by recent sands and detrital material is not known. Superimposed on the general structure are a few small irregularities in the form of minor folding and faulting. There is, however, no evidence of any major faults. THAT veterans are crowding the colleges is no longer news; 78 per cent of the 1916-47 enrollment in mineral industries curricula in the United States were veterans, but the rapid comeback from an estimated 1262 total mineral industries students in 1944-45 to 11,422 in 1946-47 is almost astonishing. The figure, which includes 1008 graduate students, is a substantial increase over the previous top record of 9619 in 1938-39. A small part of the increase is caused by the larger number of women entering the field, of whom there were c 9 in 1916-47. Petroleum leads the curricula with 34.5 % of the enrollment, metallurgy is second with 28%, and mining is third with 18%. Table 1. shows all curricula offered and those accredited by ECPD. Using the Mississippi River as a dividing line, 31 colleges in the East and 27 in the West offer curricula in the mineral industries.

THE Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., is unique in this country in that it serves all phases of the iron and steel industries. Through its publications, its meetings, and its sponsorship of new technical developments in the industries, it has proved of great value. The various technical committees of the Division are the nucleus around which this service can be developed. The Blast Furnace and Raw Materials Committee has done excellent work. The need for beneficiation of iron ores is increasing and the economics of this operation are developing more and more in favor of increased activities. Ores that are slightly undergrade should be concentrated up to grade to supplant the present practice of mixing with higher-grade ores to bring up the average composition. Marginal ores that are not now being mined, or that are being mined and piled for future use, should be concentrated. The development of the use of sinter in the blast furnace, because of the elimination of fines, the advantage of better sizing of the charge, the resulting reduction of coke consumption, and increased output of pig iron per furnace, will make concentration and sintering become practical ahead of its natural time.

G. W. THOMPSON,* Brooklyn, N. Y.-This subject has two aspects, neither of-which can be ignored: these are the economic aspect and the technical aspect. Under ordinary conditions, economic law will take care of the conservation of tin. Under present conditions it seems desirable that economic law should still be permitted to operate as far as is practicable. It is true that this law operates rather slowly, and that under war conditions it cannot be depended upon to give our Government the supply it immediately needs. There should, therefore, be a designation of the essential industries by the Government, and tin should be supplied for those needs, letting the non-essential industries take what is left. At the same time, information ought to be forthcoming as to how tin can be conserved; with tin selling at 80 c. per pound, more or less, it is to the interest of every consumer to get the best information he can as to how he can save tin. Economic law would properly punish those who do not study their own interests in this way. I deprecate, therefore, any centralized socialistic effort toward avoiding penalties through failure to observe and obey economic law. In saying this, however, I am not unmindful that it is desirable for our Government to take such control of the tin situation as may be necessary to the prosecution of the war, practically regardless of the effect of such action upon individual industry, which should studiously seek to adjust itself to the new condition. The Government should promulgate such technical information as it can collect, showing how tin can be conserved, and should urge upon every consumer the exercise of his common sense in self-protection. There is very little danger of any one attempting to hoard or corner tin, in the present state of the market. Most consumers will be glad to live from hand to mouth, covering their sales by purchases, or vice versa. As to the technical aspects: Tin and tin alloys are used to give certain practical and also certain artistic results. The practical factors are those involved in proper adhesion, continuity of surface, protection, the right degree of hardness, proper working qualities, etc. The artistic results are those that appeal purely to the eye or to our cultivated sense of what is desirable. There is no doubt that a great deal of tin could be saved if there were not a demand for certain pleasing effects. How can this saving be brought about? The users of tin hearing alloys are not the only ones involved in this question. The manufacturers of solder and babbitt have for a long time sought to give certain appearances to their fabricated bars and ingots in order to make them more salable. The user of a solder is very apt to judge of its working qualities by the appearance of the bar; the same thing is true with regard to babbitts. THE National Coal Association held its annual meeting at Cleveland on Nov. 14-16, 1928, having changed the time from the spring to the autumn to avoid conflict with the great number of meetings ordinarily held in the spring. Institute members were \\yell to the fore in its activities, the president, E. C. Mahan (who was reelected for another term!, C. E. Bockus, treasurer, and the secretary, H. L. Gancly, being A. I. M. E. members, as are many of the directors. At the first session, our past president, S. A. Taylor, presented a 1;aper which is reprinted in part herewith. At the Thurs- day session W. D. Brennan presided, Walter Barllum led the discussion on membership, and Otis Mouser led the discussion on taxation. In the afternoon, J. P. Williams, Jr., led the discussion on research. Rembrandt Peale presided at the annual dinner in the evening. At the concluding session on Friday resolutions were adopted, among them one in which the Association "reaffirms its attitude toward proposed Federal legislation affecting the bituminous coal industry by saying that it opposes legislation which would seek to single out this industry for regulatory action. This particularly applies to such bills as S4490."

IN connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segre-gate structures of the Widmanstätten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith1 the plane of segregation in the matrix con-tains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the literature.2 The increasing com-mercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this funda-mental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys.
